Abstract

Scholars have been working through multiple avenues to address longstanding and entrenched patterns of global and racial exclusion in psychology and academia more generally. As part of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology’s efforts to enhance inclusive excellence in its journals, the Anti Colorism/Eurocentrism in Methods and Practices (ACEMAP) task force worked to develop recommendations and resources to counteract racism and global exclusion in standard publication practices. In this paper, the task force describes a structure and process we developed for conducting committee work that centers marginalized perspectives while mitigating cultural taxation. We then describe our recommendations and openly accessible resources (e.g., resources for inclusive reviewing practices, writing about constraints on generalizability, drafting a globally inclusive demographic information survey, inclusive citation practices, and improving representation among editorial gatekeeping positions; recommendations and resource links are provided in Table 3). These recommendations and resources are both (a) tailored for a particular set of journals at a particular time and (b) useful as a foundation that can be continually adapted and improved for other journals and going forward. This paper provides concrete plans for readers looking to enhance inclusive excellence in their committee work, authorship, reviewing, and/or editing.

Abstract

Iverson (2006) proposed the law of similarity \[ \xi_{s}(\lambda x)= \gamma(\lambda, s)\xi_{\eta(\lambda, s)}(x) \] for the sensitivity functions $\xi_{s}\, (s\in S)$. Compared to the former models, the generality of this one lies in that here $\gamma$ and $\eta$ can also depend on the variables $\lambda$ and $s$. In the literature, this model (or its special cases) is usually considered together with a given psychophysical representation (e.g. Fechnerian, subtractive, or affine). Our goal, however, is to study at first Iverson's law of similarity on its own. At first we show that if certain mild assumptions are fulfilled, then $\xi$ can be written in a rather simple form containing only one-variable functions. The obtained form proves to be very useful when we assume some kind of representation. Motivated by Hsu and Iverson (2016), in the second part of the third section we study the above model assuming that the mapping $\eta$ is multiplicatively translational. First, we show how these mappings can be characterized. Later on we turn to the examination of the so-called power law. According to our results, the corresponding function $\xi$ then does not have a Fechnerian representation, but it do have a subtractive representation. As an application of the results of the subsection, we close the paper with the study of the shift invariance property.

4. Masked LoGoNet: Fast and Accurate 3D Image Analysis for Medical Domain

Abstract

Standard modern machine-learning-based imaging methods have faced challenges in medical applications due to the high cost of dataset construction and, thereby, the limited labeled training data available. Additionally, upon deployment, these methods are usually used to process a large volume of data on a daily basis, imposing a high maintenance cost on medical facilities. In this paper, we introduce a new neural network architecture, termed LoGoNet, with a tailored self-supervised learning (SSL) method to mitigate such challenges. LoGoNet integrates a novel feature extractor within a U-shaped architecture, leveraging Large Kernel Attention (LKA) and a dual encoding strategy to capture both long-range and short-range feature dependencies adeptly. This is in contrast to existing methods that rely on increasing network capacity to enhance feature extraction. This combination of novel techniques in our model is especially beneficial in medical image segmentation, given the difficulty of learning intricate and often irregular body organ shapes, such as the spleen. Complementary, we propose a novel SSL method tailored for 3D images to compensate for the lack of large labeled datasets. The method combines masking and contrastive learning techniques within a multi-task learning framework and is compatible with both Vision Transformer (ViT) and CNN-based models. We demonstrate the efficacy of our methods in numerous tasks across two standard datasets (i.e., BTCV and MSD). Benchmark comparisons with eight state-of-the-art models highlight LoGoNet's superior performance in both inference time and accuracy.

Abstract

High-speed, phase contrast retinal and blood flow imaging using an adaptive optics partially confocal multi-line ophthalmosocope (AO-pcMLO) is described. It allows for simultaneous confocal and phase contrast imaging with various directional multi-line illumination by using a single 2D camera and a digital micromirror device (DMD). Both vertical and horizontal line illumination directions were tested, for photoreceptor and vascular imaging. The phase contrast imaging provided improved visualization of retinal structures such as cone inner segments, vessel walls and red blood cells with images being acquired at frame rates up to 500 Hz. Abstract

The NA48/2 experiment at CERN reports the first observation of the $K^{\pm} \rightarrow \pi^{0} \pi^{0} \mu^{\pm} \nu$ decay based on a sample of 2437 candidates with 15% background contamination collected in 2003--2004. The decay branching ratio in the kinematic region of the squared dilepton mass above $0.03$~GeV$^2/c^4$ is measured to be $(0.65 \pm 0.03) \times 10^{-6}$. The extrapolation to the full kinematic space, using a specific model, is found to be $(3.45 \pm 0.16) \times 10^{-6}$, in agreement with chiral perturbation theory predictions., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

Short fibers of Agave Americana (AA) was extracted from its plant leaf, was chemically treated with Ac2O, HCOOH, H2O2, KMnO4 and NaOH, and then characterized by Attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), thermo-gravimetric/differential thermo-gravimetric (TGA/DTG), and field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). PVA stabilized copper nanoparticles from chemical reduction method was characterized using field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Dynamic light scattering analysis (DLS), UV–visible absorption spectroscopy, Fourier Transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and Thermogravimetric analysis/differential thermogravimetry (TGA/DTG). Bio-composites (AA + Polyester Resin (PE) and hybrid nano bio-composites (AA + Polyester Resin (PE) + Cu) were prepared from the untreated and treated AA fibers and further characterized. The synergistic effect of chemical treatment on morphological (SEM), thermal (TGA/DTG), mechanical properties (flexural, tensile, impact and compressive strength) followed by % water absorption were examined. The average surface roughness values (Ra) of chemical treated fiber was identified to be in decreasing manner along with compression strength of biocomposite in the order of untreated (10.74 μm, 44.01 MPa) > NaOH (8.55 μm, 45.07 MPa) > HCOOH (3.49 μm, 24.10 MPa) Ac2O (3.24 μm, 22.10 MPa) > H2O2 (2.51um, 17.9 MPa) > KMnO4 (1.52 μm, 15.1 MPa) treated fibers. Subsequently, the addition of 2s@PVA led to reverse the order namely, the compressive strength of the bionanocomposites were Untreated (10.74 μm, 9.0 MPa)

12. Extended isogeometric analysis of multi-material and multi-physics problems using hierarchical B-splines

Abstract

This paper presents an immersed, isogeometric finite element framework to predict the response of multi-material, multi-physics problems with complex geometries using locally refined discretizations. To circumvent the need to generate conformal meshes, this work uses an eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM) to discretize the governing equations on non-conforming, embedding meshes. A flexible approach to create truncated hierarchical B-splines discretizations is presented. This approach enables the refinement of each state variable field individually to meet field-specific accuracy requirements. To obtain an immersed geometry representation that is consistent across all hierarchically refined B-spline discretizations, the geometry is immersed into a single mesh, the XFEM background mesh, which is constructed from the union of all hierarchical B-spline meshes. An extraction operator is introduced to represent the truncated hierarchical B-spline bases in terms of Lagrange shape functions on the XFEM background mesh without loss of accuracy. The truncated hierarchical B-spline bases are enriched using a generalized Heaviside enrichment strategy to accommodate small geometric features and multi-material problems. The governing equations are augmented by a formulation of the face-oriented ghost stabilization enhanced for locally refined B-spline bases. We present examples for two- and three-dimensional linear elastic and thermo-elastic problems. The numerical results validate the accuracy of our framework. The results also demonstrate the applicability of the proposed framework to large, geometrically complex problems.

Abstract

A timely and long-term programme of kaon decay measurements at a new level of precision is presented, leveraging the capabilities of the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). The proposed programme is firmly anchored on the experience built up studying kaon decays at the SPS over the past four decades, and includes rare processes, CP violation, dark sectors, symmetry tests and other tests of the Standard Model. The experimental programme is based on a staged approach involving experiments with charged and neutral kaon beams, as well as operation in beam-dump mode. 16. Speech Development across Subgroups of Autistic Children: A Longitudinal Study

Abstract

Subgroups of children with different speech profiles have been described however, little is known about the trajectories of speech development or stability of subgroups over time. This longitudinal study described both speech trajectories and subgroup stability of 22 autistic children, aged 2;0-6;11 years, over 12 months. Independent and relational speech analyses, vocabulary size and nonverbal communication were used in clustering. Results suggest varied speech trajectories, particularly for children with 'low language and low speech' at Time 1. Receptive vocabulary and consonant inventory at Time 1 may predict speech outcomes after 12 months. A small subgroup of children (n = 3) present with low expressive vocabulary and speech but higher receptive vocabulary and use of gestures. This unique profile remained stable.

17. Assessing the efficacy of 2D and 3D CNN algorithms in OCT-based glaucoma detection

Abstract

Abstract Glaucoma is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by the gradual degeneration of retinal ganglion cells, leading to irreversible blindness worldwide. Therefore, timely and accurate diagnosis of glaucoma is crucial, enabling early intervention and facilitating effective disease management to mitigate further vision deterioration. The advent of optical coherence tomography (OCT) has marked a transformative era in ophthalmology, offering detailed visualization of the macula and optic nerve head (ONH) regions. In recent years, both 2D and 3D convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithms have been applied to OCT image analysis. While 2D CNNs rely on post-prediction aggregation of all B-scans within OCT volumes, 3D CNNs allow for direct glaucoma prediction from the OCT data. However, in the absence of extensively pre-trained 3D models, the comparative efficacy of 2D and 3D-CNN algorithms in detecting glaucoma from volumetric OCT images remains unclear. Therefore, this study explores the efficacy of glaucoma detection through volumetric OCT images using select state-of-the-art (SOTA) 2D-CNN models, 3D adaptations of these 2D-CNN models with specific weight transfer techniques, and a custom 5-layer 3D-CNN-Encoder algorithm. The performance across two distinct datasets is evaluated, each focusing on the macula and the ONH, to provide a comprehensive understanding of the models’ capabilities in identifying glaucoma. Our findings demonstrate that the 2D-CNN algorithm consistently provided robust results compared to their 3D counterparts tested in this study for glaucoma detection, achieving AUC values of 0.960 and 0.943 for the macular and ONH OCT test images, respectively. Given the scarcity of pre-trained 3D models trained on extensive datasets, this comparative analysis underscores the overall utility of 2D and 3D-CNN algorithms in advancing glaucoma diagnostic systems in ophthalmology and highlights the potential of 2D algorithms for volumetric OCT image-based glaucoma detection.

Abstract The Unfolded Protein Response (UPR) is an essential cellular process activated by the accumulation of unfolded proteins within the Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER), a condition referred to as ER stress. Three ER anchored receptors, IRE1, PERK and ATF6 act as ER stress sensors monitoring the health of the ER. Upon detection of ER stress, IRE1, PERK and ATF6 initiate downstream signaling pathways collectively referred to as the UPR. The overarching aim of the UPR is to restore ER homeostasis by reducing ER stress, however if that is not possible, the UPR transitions from a pro-survival to a pro-death response. While our understanding of the key signaling pathways central to the UPR is well defined, the same is not true of the subtle signaling events that help fine tune the UPR, supporting its ability to adapt to varying amplitudes or durations of ER stress. In this study, we demonstrate cross talk between the IRE1 and PERK branches of the UPR, wherein IRE1 via XBP1s signaling helps to sustain PERK expression during prolonged ER stress. Our findings suggest cross talk between UPR branches aids adaptiveness thereby helping to support the plasticity of UPR signaling responses.

Abstract

Abstract The NA48/2 experiment at CERN reports the first observation of the K ± → π 0 π 0 μ ± ν decay based on a sample of 2437 candidates with 15% background contamination collected in 2003–2004. The decay branching ratio in the kinematic region of the squared dilepton mass above 0.03 GeV2/c 4 is measured to be (0.65 ± 0.03) × 10 −6. The extrapolation to the full kinematic space, using a specific model, is found to be (3.45 ± 0.16) × 10 −6, in agreement with chiral perturbation theory predictions.

20. Programmable, high-speed, adaptive optics partially confocal multi-spot ophthalmoscope using a digital micromirror device.

Abstract

A high-speed, adaptive optics partially confocal multi-spot ophthalmoscope (AO-pcMSO) using a digital micromirror device (DMD) in the illumination channel and a fast 2D CMOS camera is described. The camera is synchronized with the DMD allowing projection of multiple, simultaneous AO-corrected spots onto the human retina. Spatial filtering on each raw retinal image before reconstruction works as an array virtual pinholes. A frame acquisition rate of 250 fps is achieved by applying this parallel projection scheme. The contrast improves by 2-3 fold when compared to a standard flood illumination architecture. Partially confocal images of the human retina show cone and rod photoreceptors over a range of retinal eccentricities.

Abstract Early diagnosis of cancer demands sensitive and accurate detection of cancer biomarkers in blood. Carbon dots (CDs) bio-functionalization with antibodies, peptides or aptamers have played significant role in cancer diagnosis and targeted cancer therapy. Herein, a biosensor for detection of cancer biomarker carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in blood serum has been designed using CDs bio-functionalized with HRP-conjugated CEA antibody (CUCDs@CEAAb2) as detection probe. CDs were synthesized by upscaling of cow urine, a nitrogen rich biomass waste, by hydrothermal method. Detection probe based on CDs resulted in 3.5 times higher sensitivity as compared to conventional electrochemical sandwich immunoassay. To further improve the sensor performance, hyper-branched polyethylenimine grafted poly amino aniline (PEI-g-PAANI) was used as the sensing interface, which enabled immobilization of higher amount of capture antibody. Detection of CEA in human blood serum coupled with wide linear range (0.5–50 ng/ml), good specificity, stability, reproducibility and low detection limit (10 pg/ml) signified the excellence of CUCDs based CEA immunosensor. CUCDs exhibited excitation wavelength dependent fluorescence property and showed strong blue emission under UV irradiation. MTT assay indicated that the material is not toxic towards human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) and MG63 osteosarcoma cells (cell viability > 90%). The present study demonstrates a methodology for valorization of animal waste to a cost-effective carbon based functional nanomaterial for clinical detection of cancer biomarkers.

Introduction: Nanotechnology is the science and engineering of nanoparticles whose dimensions range from 1 to 100 nm. Nanoparticles have special characteristics like increased surface area, high reactivity, and enhanced mechanical, thermal, and optical properties that make them attractive for use in dental applications. However, the use of nanoparticles in dental materials can have toxic effects on the human body. The objective of this paper is to discuss the toxic effects of various nanoparticles in dental materials, their adverse effect on human health, and measures to overcome such effects. Objectives: Nanoparticles are used in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of oral diseases like dental caries, pulpo periodontal lesions, oral cancer, denture stomatitis, and candidiasis. Exposure to nanoparticles may occur to the dental professional, and the patient during procedures like restoration, finishing, and polishing. Such exposure to nanoparticles through inhalation, and ingestion causes toxic effects in the lungs, skin, brain, liver, and kidney. Proper risk assessment methods and preventive measures may help reduce these toxic effects to some extent. Significance: Toxic effects of nanoparticles that are released during dental procedures, their route of exposure, and the concentration at which nanoparticles can induce toxic effects on the human body are discussed in detail in this review. The paper also aims to create awareness among dental professionals, students, and patients regarding nanoparticle exposure and its adverse effects, and methods to prevent and overcome these effects. Currently, it is ignored or taken lightly by the stakeholders and this review may throw light.

26. XIGA: An eXtended IsoGeometric Analysis approach for multi-material problems

Abstract

Multi-material problems often exhibit complex geometries along with physical responses presenting large spatial gradients or discontinuities. In these cases, providing high-quality body-fitted finite element analysis meshes and obtaining accurate solutions remain challenging. Immersed boundary techniques provide elegant solutions for such problems. Enrichment methods alleviate the need for generating conforming analysis grids by capturing discontinuities within mesh elements. Additionally, increased accuracy of physical responses and geometry description can be achieved with higher-order approximation bases. In particular, using B-splines has become popular with the development of IsoGeometric Analysis. In this work, an eXtended IsoGeometric Analysis (XIGA) approach is proposed for multi-material problems. The computational domain geometry is described implicitly by level set functions. A novel generalized Heaviside enrichment strategy is employed to accommodate an arbitrary number of materials without artificially stiffening the physical response. Higher-order B-spline functions are used for both geometry representation and analysis. Boundary and interface conditions are enforced weakly via Nitsche's method, and a new face-oriented ghost stabilization methodology is used to mitigate numerical instabilities arising from small material integration subdomains. Two- and three-dimensional heat transfer and elasticity problems are solved to validate the approach. Numerical studies provide insight into the ability to handle multiple materials considering sharp-edged and curved interfaces, as well as the impact of higher-order bases and stabilization on the solution accuracy and conditioning.

Abstract

IntroductionNovel therapies for 3L+ relapsed/refractory (r/r) follicular lymphoma (FL) have been approved recently by the US Food and Drug Administration including anti-CD19 CAR-T therapies such as axicabtagene ciloleucel (axi-cel) and CD20 × CD3 T-cell-engaging bispecific monoclonal antibodies such as mosunetuzumab (mosun). The objective of this study was to assess the cost-effectiveness of axi-cel compared to mosun in 3L+ r/r FL patients from a US third-party payer perspective.MethodsA three-state (progression-free, progressed disease, and death) partitioned-survival model was used to compare two treatments over a lifetime horizon in a hypothetical cohort of US adults (age ≥18) receiving 3L+ treatment for r/r FL. ZUMA-5 and GO29781 trial data were used to inform progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Mosun survival was modeled via hazard ratios (HRs) applied to axi-cel survival curves. The PFS HR value was estimated via a matching-adjusted indirect comparison (MAIC) based on mosun pseudo-individual patient data and adjusted axi-cel data to account for trial populations differences. One-way sensitivity analysis (OWSA) and probabilistic sensitivity analyses (PSA) were conducted. Scenario analyses included: 1) the mosun HRs were applied to the weighted (adjusted) ZUMA-5 24-month data to most exactly reflect the MAIC, 2) mosun HR values were applied to axi-cel 48-month follow-up data, and 3) recent axi-cel health state utility values in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma patients.ResultsThe analysis estimated increases of 1.82 LY and 1.89 QALY for axi-cel compared to mosun. PFS for axi-cel patients was 6.42 LY vs. 1.60 LY for mosun. Increase of $257,113 in the progression-free state was driven by one-time axi-cel treatment costs. Total incremental costs for axi-cel were $204,377, resulting in an ICER of $108,307/QALY gained. The OWSA led to ICERs ranging from $240,255 to $75,624, with all but two parameters falling below $150,000/QALY. In the PSA, axi-cel had an 64% probability of being cost-effective across 5,000 iterations using a $150,000 willingness-to-pay threshold. Scenarios one and two resulted in ICERs of $105,353 and $102,695, respectively.DiscussionThis study finds that axi-cel is cost-effective compared to mosun at the commonly cited $150,000/QALY US willingness-to-pay threshold, with robust results across a range of sensitivity analyses accounting for parameter uncertainty.

29. Predictive analysis of groundwater balance and assessment of safe yield using a probabilistic groundwater model for the Dead Sea Basin

Abstract

IntroductionGroundwater in the Middle East and North Africa region is a critical component of the water supply budget due to a (semi-)arid climate and hence limited surface water resources. Despite the significance, factors affecting the groundwater balance and overall sustainability of the resource are often poorly understood. This often includes recharge and discharge characteristics, groundwater extraction and impacts of climate change. The present study investigates the groundwater balance in the Dead Sea Basin aquifer in Jordan using a groundwater flow model developed using the MODFLOW.MethodsThe study aimed to simulate groundwater balance components and their effect on estimation of the aquifer's safe yield, and to also undertake a preliminary analysis of the impact of climate change on groundwater levels in the aquifer. Model calibration and predictive analysis was undertaken using a probabilistic modeling workflow. Spatially heterogeneous groundwater recharge for the historical period was estimated as a function of rainfall by simultaneously calibrating the recharge and aquifer hydraulic property parameters.Results and discussionThe model indicated that annual average recharge constituted 5.1% of the precipitation over a simulation period of 6 years. The effect of groundwater recharge and discharge components were evaluated in the context of estimation of safe yield of the aquifer. The average annual safe yield is estimated as ~8.0 mm corresponding to the 80% of the calibrated recharge value. Simulated groundwater levels matched well with the declining trends in observed water levels which are indicative of unsustainable use. Long-term simulation of groundwater levels indicated that current conditions would result in large drawdown in groundwater levels by the end of the century. Simulation of climate change scenarios using projected estimates of rainfall and evaporation indicates that climate change scenarios would further exacerbate groundwater levels by relatively small amounts. These findings highlight the need to simulate the groundwater balance to better understand the water availability and future sustainability.

Abstract

A sample of 3984 candidates of the K+→π+γγ decay, with an estimated background of 291±14 events, was collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN during 2017–2018. In order to describe the observed di-photon mass spectrum, the next-to-leading order contribution in chiral perturbation theory was found to be necessary. The decay branching ratio in the full kinematic range is measured to be (9.61±0.17)×10−7. The first search for production and prompt decay of an axion-like particle with gluon coupling in the process K+→π+a, a→γγ is also reported.

Abstract

Background: High-molecular weight heparin (HMWH), a molecule extensively used as an anticoagulant, shows concentration-dependent angiogenic and anti-angiogenic potential. So far, no studies have reported the interactive potential of HMWH with various pro-angiogenic growth factors under physiological conditions. Haence, we aimed to find the impact of major pro-angiogenic growth factors under HMWH induced angiogenesis. Methods: Chicken Chorioallantoic Membranes (CAMs) are incubated with various concentrations of HMWH. Semiquantitative PCR method was implemented to measure the changes in the transcription level of pro-angiogenic growth factors. The scanning electron microscopic technique is applied to find the morphological changes in CAM. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation studies using NAMD and CHARMM force field discerned the heparin-binding mode with the pro-angiogenic growth factors. Results: HMWH can enhance the transcription level of major pro-angiogenic growth factors, significantly impacting FGF2 under 100 μM concentration. The in-silico analysis reveals that HMWH shows the highest binding affinity with FGF2. Further, molecular dynamics and interaction studies using 1 kDa Heparin against FGF2 showed that the former binds stably with the latter due to a strong salt bridge formation between the sulfate groups and arginine residues (ARG 119 and ARG109). Conclusion: The combined experimental and in-silico analysis results reveal that HMWH can interact with pro-angiogenic growth factors under micromolar concentration while inducing angiogenesis. This observation further supports the therapeutic benefits of HMWH as an angiogenic factor under such low concentration. This technique is used to replenish the blood supply to chronic wounds to speed healing and prevent unnecessary amputations.

Abstract Measurement of the ultra-rare K + → π + ν ν ¯ $$ {K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu} $$ decay at the NA62 experiment at CERN requires high-performance particle identification to distinguish muons from pions. Calorimetric identification currently in use, based on a boosted decision tree algorithm, achieves a muon misidentification probability of 1.2 × 10 −5 for a pion identification efficiency of 75% in the momentum range of 15–40 GeV/c. In this work, calorimetric identification performance is improved by developing an algorithm based on a convolutional neural network classifier augmented by a filter. Muon misidentification probability is reduced by a factor of six with respect to the current value for a fixed pion-identification efficiency of 75%. Alternatively, pion identification efficiency is improved from 72% to 91% for a fixed muon misidentification probability of 10 −5.

Abstract

Abstract Background Tamoxifen is used in low dose concentrations (20–40 mg per day) as a therapy for breast cancer but is known to have ocular side effects. In this case report, the foveal cone integrity in a tamoxifen-treated patient who complained of a small central scotoma in the left eye while reading was examined using high resolution adaptive optics imaging. Case presentation Both eyes of a 54-year-old Caucasian, non-hispanic female who had been treated with tamoxifen for 1.5 years were examined using various imaging modalities including fundus photography, fundus autofluorescence, fluorescein angiography, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography, and adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscopy. Clinical spectral-domain optical coherence tomography showed a very small disruption to the photoreceptor layer at the fovea in the left eye only. However, adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscopy imaging revealed foveal cone loss in both eyes, but to a lesser extent in the right eye. Inner retinal changes were not observed in either eye. Conclusion The area of cone loss was similar in size to a single newsprint letter when projected onto the retina, matching the patient’s description of a scotoma in the left eye. Given the isolated loss of foveal cone photoreceptors with the absence of previously reported inner retinal and vascular changes, our results may indicate the earliest retinal changes associated with tamoxifen retinopathy.

Abstract

In the present paper, the materials for making three mattress covers (an antibacterial mattress cover, a mattress cover intended for hospital use and a hypoallergenic mattress cover) were treated and tested in order to obtain basic information about the chemical treatment of fibers in the new mattress covers. The constituent components of the three mattress covers were each undersampled by cutting each layer then, it was passed to the collection of samples in small, labeled bags. Each sample was sampled over its entire layer depth, with section areas of about 1-2 cm. This paper highlights the difference in finishing treatments, depending on the areas of use of knitted materials intended for mattress covers. Thus, in addition to the differences between the solutions that are applied to these materials, we can also observe that those intended for hospital use are without preservatives and are not washed, because the whole solution is eliminated from the treatment process, the ones that are contrary to the materials from which the hypoallergenic mattress covers are made, which after each wash becomes more and more beautiful and qualitative. On the machine called Squeezing Pader Machine of Tai Ping Yang, the treatment of the materials analyzed in this work was performed, both by treatments applied to the surface of the materials and by immersion, obtaining a load with 100% solution.

Abstract

The paper provides practical information on the process of valorization of textile waste. Different types of products are made from industrial and consumer waste, such as redesigned clothing, women's accessories, bags, women's purses, etc. The work presents the way of making several small accessories, respectively necklace models and earrings, made from the waste resulted in the workshop. The authors chose to make denim accessories because as we know denim is a type of fabric, usually made of cotton, and cotton is a vegetable fiber. Cotton fabrics are versatile, with good durability, breathable, hypoallergenic, with very good capacity of retaining dyes, with good resistance to abrasion, all this making it a material preferred by those who make accessories, because it provides wearing comfort. Unlike other textiles, cotton lets the skin breathe, especially during warm periods, thus naturally preventing the appearance of sweat. Both the necklace and the earrings are made from a piece of material extracted from denim waste. It was unfolded and checked from an aesthetic and qualitative point of view, on the grounds of texture and uniformity of color, then strips of material were cut out, which were assembled piece by piece, twisted, glued, and at the end for added value, decorative elements were applied.

Abstract

In this research, the attractiveness of combinations of natural colors and contemporary shapes in fashion design is explored. This was done by means of a questionnaire survey. Four shapes of clothing and ten colors obtained from plant and insect pigments are proposed. The research was conducted in two phases – qualitative and quantitative analysis. The quantitative study confirmed the results of the qualitative study and using an appropriate data reduction method, the study results were analyzed graphically. The results showed that users rated designs with high-contrast color and shape combinations as more attractive than those with low-contrast combinations. The study also showed that in addition to the shape of the garment, the choice of natural color sources can also influence consumer preferences. This study aims to overcome the shortcomings of previous studies that only examined color without investigating its relationship to garment shape. The knowledge gained from this study can help fashion designers create garments that are both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly. However, further research is needed to determine the relationship between natural colors, contemporary shapes and consumer behavior in selecting them.

Abstract A sample of 1.3 × 105 K + → π 0 e + νγ candidates with less than 1% background was collected by the NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS in 2017–2018. Branching fraction measurements are obtained at percent relative precision in three restricted kinematic regions, improving on existing results by a factor larger than two. An asymmetry, possibly related to T-violation, is investigated with no evidence observed within the achieved precision.

Abstract

Abstract The NA62 experiment at CERN, designed to study the ultra-rare decay K + → π + ν ν ¯ $$ \nu \overline{\nu} $$ , has also collected data in beam-dump mode. In this configuration, dark photons may be produced by protons dumped on an absorber and reach a decay volume beginning 80 m downstream. A search for dark photons decaying in flight to μ + μ − pairs is reported, based on a sample of 1.4 × 1017 protons on dump collected in 2021. No evidence for a dark photon signal is observed. A region of the parameter space is excluded at 90% CL, improving on previous experimental limits for dark photon masses between 215 and 550 MeV/c 2.

Abstract

Immuno-mass spectrometry imaging (iMSI) uses laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) to determine the spatial expression of biomolecules in tissue sections following immunolabelling with antibodies conjugated to a metal reporter. As with all immunolabelling techniques, the binding efficiency of multiplexed staining can be affected by a number of factors including epitope blocking and other forms of steric hindrance. To date, the effects on the binding of metal-conjugated antibodies to their epitopes in a multiplexed analysis have yet to be quantitatively explored by iMSI. Here we describe a protocol to investigate the effects of multiplexing on reproducible binding using the muscle proteins, dystrophin, sarcospan, and myosin as a model, with antibodies conjugated with Maxpar® reagents before histological application to murine quadriceps sections using standard immunolabelling protocols and imaging with LA-ICP-MS. The antibodies were each individually applied to eight sections, and multiplexed to another eight sections. The average concentrations of the lanthanide analytes were determined, before statistical analyses found there was no significant difference between the individual and multiplexed application of the antibodies. These analyses provide a framework for ensuring reproducibility of antibody binding during multiplexed iMSI, which will allow quantitative exploration of protein-protein interactions and provide a greater understanding of fundamental biological processes during healthy and diseased states.

We review the capabilities of two projects that have been proposed as the next major European facility, for consideration in the upcoming update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics: CLIC and FCC. We focus on their physics potentials and emphasise the key differences between the linear or circular approaches. We stress the uniqueness of the FCC-ee programme for precision electroweak physics at the $Z$ peak and the $WW$ threshold, as well as its unequalled statistics for Higgs physics and high accuracy for observing possible new phenomena in Higgs and $Z$ decays, whereas CLIC and FCC-ee offer similar capabilities near the $t \overline t$ threshold. Whilst CLIC offers the possibility of energy upgrades to 1500 and 3000 GeV, FCC-ee paves the way for FCC-hh. The latter offers unique capabilities for making direct or indirect discoveries in a new energy range, and has the highest sensitivity to the self-couplings of the Higgs boson and any anomalous couplings. Abstract

Abstract The NA62 experiment at CERN targets the measurement of the ultra-rare K + → π + ν ν ¯ $$ {K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu} $$ decay, and carries out a broad physics programme that includes probes for symmetry violations and searches for exotic particles. Data were collected in 2016–2018 using a multi-level trigger system, which is described highlighting performance studies based on 2018 data.

Abstract

Emerging and promising therapeutic interventions for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) are confounded by the challenges of quantifying dystrophin. Current approaches have poor precision, require large amounts of tissue, and are difficult to standardize. This paper presents an immuno-mass spectrometry imaging method using gadolinium (Gd)-labeled anti-dystrophin antibodies and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry to simultaneously quantify and localize dystrophin in muscle sections. Gd is quantified as a proxy for the relative expression of dystrophin and was validated in murine and human skeletal muscle sections following k-means clustering segmentation, before application to DMD patients with different gene mutations where dystrophin expression was measured up to 100 µg kg-1 Gd. These results demonstrate that immuno-mass spectrometry imaging is a viable approach for pre-clinical to clinical research in DMD. It rapidly quantified relative dystrophin in single tissue sections, efficiently used valuable patient resources, and may provide information on drug efficacy for clinical translation.

50. Speech Abilities in a Heterogeneous Group of Children With Autism

Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to provide detailed descriptive information about the speech of a heterogeneous cohort of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and to explore whether subgroups exist based on this detailed speech data. High rates of delayed and disordered speech in both low-verbal and high-functioning children with ASD have been reported. There is limited information regarding the speech abilities of young children across a range of functional levels. Method: Participants were 23 children aged 2;0-6;11 (years;months) with a diagnosis of ASD. Comprehensive speech and language assessments were administered. Independent and relational speech analyses were conducted from single-word naming tasks and spontaneous speech samples. Hierarchical clustering based on language, nonverbal communication, and spontaneous speech descriptive data was completed. Results: Independent and relational speech analyses are reported. These variables are used in the cluster analyses, which identified three distinct subgroups: (a) children with high language and high speech ability (n = 10), (b) children with low expressive language and low speech ability but higher receptive language and use of gestures (n = 3), and (c) children with low language and low speech development (n = 10). Conclusions: This is the first study to provide detailed descriptive speech data of a heterogeneous cohort of children with ASD and use this information to statistically explore potential subgroups. Clustering suggests a small number of children present with low levels of speech and expressive language in the presence of better receptive language and gestures. This communication profile warrants further exploration. Replicating these findings with a larger cohort of children is needed.
