Most vision labs have had to replace the formerly dominant CRT screens with LCDs and several studies have investigated whether changing the display type leads to changes in perceptual phenomena, since fundamental properties of the stimulation, e.g., the transition time between frames, differ between these different display technologies. While many phenomena have proven robust, Kihara et al. (2010) reported different metacontrast masking functions on LCDs compared to CRTs. This difference poses a challenge for the integration of new LCD-based findings with the established knowledge from studies with CRTs and requires theoretical accounts that consider the effects of different display types. However, before further conclusions can be drawn, the basic findings should be secured. Therefore, we tried to reproduce the display type effect by comparing metacontrast masking on an LCD and a CRT in two experiments. Our approach differs from the previous study by increasing the power and reliability of the measurements and carefully matching the two display types. In addition to display type, we varied target-mask stimulus-onset asynchrony (SOA) and stimulus-background polarity. Regardless of display type and polarity, we found the typical type-B masking functions. Evidence for a SOA-dependent display type effect in the black-on-white polarity condition from Experiment 1 was not replicated in Experiment 2. Overall, the results indicate that metacontrast masking effects on objective and subjective measurements, i.e., discriminatory sensitivity and phenomenological reports, do not vary significantly with display technologies. In this work, 12 functional, usable, pleasuring, and media usage properties were analysed for five display technologies: image rendering, 360° rotation, and augmented, immersive, and non-immersive virtual reality. The perception of their importance and their assessment for the chosen technologies were studied by taking two different household products. Two variables for studying decision and expectations were also considered. The results showed that 360° rotation was well-valued in various properties, mainly related to functionality and usability, while the immersive virtual technology stood out in media properties and also in the most important feature: realism. It was also seen that the results could depend on the displayed product. These results provide a deeper insight for user experience optimisation because they complement the information to choose the most appropriate display technology based on the properties to be prioritised. For years, a discussion has persevered on the benefits and drawbacks of antibody discovery using animal immunization versus in vitro selection from non-animal-derived recombinant repertoires using display technologies. While it has been argued that using recombinant display libraries can reduce animal consumption, we hold that the number of animals used in immunization campaigns is dwarfed by the number sacrificed during preclinical studies. Thus, improving quality control of antibodies before entering in vivo studies will have a larger impact on animal consumption. Both animal immunization and recombinant repertoires present unique advantages for discovering antibodies that are fit for purpose. Furthermore, we anticipate that machine learning will play a significant role within discovery workflows, refining current antibody discovery practices. Both animal immunization and in vitro display technologies have their own benefits and drawbacks for antibody discovery. An increased focus on quality control aspects during antibody discovery will likely lead to a larger reduction in the use of animals in research and development than only focusing on shifting to in vitro technologies for antibody discovery. Future antibody research should focus on how to improve discovery practices by harnessing the combined benefits of both animal immunization and in vitro display technologies. Cyclic peptides discovered by genetically encoded library technologies have emerged as a class of promising molecules in chemical biology and drug discovery. Here we review the cyclic peptides identified through these techniques reported in the period 2015 to 2019, with a particular focus on the three‐dimensional structures that peptides adopt when binding to their targets. A range of different structures have been revealed through co‐crystal structures, highlighting how versatile and adaptable these molecules are in binding to diverse protein targets, such as enzymes and receptors, or challenging shallow surfaces involved in protein‐protein interfaces. Analysis of the properties of the peptides reported shows some interesting trends, with further insight for those with structural information suggestive that larger peptides are more likely to adopt secondary structure. We highlight examples where co‐crystal structures have informed the key interactions that promote high affinity and selectivity of cyclic peptides against their targets, identified novel inhibitor binding sites, and provided new insights into the biology of their targets. The structure‐guided modifications have also aided the design of cyclic peptides with improved activity and physicochemical properties. In December 2019 a novel coronavirus was detected in Wuhan City of Hubei Province-China. Owing to a high rate of transmission from human to human, the new virus called SARS-CoV-2 differed from others by its unexpectedly rapid spread. The World Health Organization (WHO) described the most recent coronavirus epidemic as a global pandemic in March 2020. The virus spread triggered a health crisis (the COVID-19 disease) within three months, with socioeconomic implications. No approved targetedtherapies are available for COVID-19, yet. However, it is foreseen that antibody-based treatments may provide an immediate cure for patients. Current neutralizing antibody development studies primarily target the S protein among the structural elements of SARSCoV- 2, which mediates the cell entry of the virus through the angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor of host cells. This review aims to provide some of the neutralizing antibody development strategies for SARS-CoV-2 and in vitro and in vivo neutralization assays. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The perceived discrepancy between continuous motion as seen in nature and frame-by-frame exhibition on a display, sometimes termed judder, is an integral part of video presentation. Over time, content creators have developed a set of rules and guidelines for maintaining a desirable cinematic look under the restrictions placed by display technology without incurring prohibitive judder. With the advent of novel displays capable of high brightness, contrast, and frame rates, these guidelines are no longer sufficient to present audiences with a uniform viewing experience. In this work, we analyze the main factors for perceptual motion artifacts in digital presentation and gather psychophysical data to generate a model of judder perception. Ribosome display is a powerful engineering research tool for the high-throughput selection of peptides or proteins, which results in the generation of high-performance binders against nearly any antigen of interest. As a cell-free display system, ribosome display has been well developed with many outstanding achievements for over 20 years. Compared with other related display techniques, ribosome display shows unique advantages and development prospects. This tool has been successfully exploited for the selection of functional and specific binders in vitro. This review provides a comprehensive survey of the applications of ribosome display in screening or evolving functional proteins as well as in diagnostics and therapeutics. Previous papers on ribosome display failed to comprehensively review evolutionary strategies for proteins. In the present paper, we review all existing evolutionary strategies that have been combined with ribosome display. We also discuss shortcomings, improvement strategies, and research tendency. DNA-encoded peptide/protein libraries are the starting point for protein evolutionary modification and functional peptide/antibody selection. Different display technologies, protein directed evolution, and deep mutational scanning (DMS) experiments employ DNA-encoded libraries to provide sequence variations for downstream affinity- or function-based selections. Mammalian cells promise the inherent post-translational modification and near-to-natural conformation of exogenously expressed mammalian proteins and thus are the best platform for studying transmembrane proteins or human disease-related proteins. However, due to the current technical bottlenecks of constructing mammalian cell-based large size DNA-encoded libraries, the advantages of mammalian cells as screening platforms have not been fully exploited. In this review, we summarize the current efforts in constructing DNA-encoded libraries in mammalian cells and the existing applications of these libraries in different fields.

Antibodies are the fastest-growing segment of the biologics market. The success of antibody-based drugs resides in their exquisite specificity, high potency, stability, solubility, safety and relatively inexpensive manufacturing process in comparison with other biologics. We outline here the structural studies and fundamental principles that define how antibodies interact with diverse targets. We also describe the antibody repertoires and affinity maturation mechanisms of human, mice and chickens, plus the use of novel single-domain antibodies in camelids and sharks. These species all utilize diverse evolutionary solutions to generate specific and high affinity antibodies and illustrate the plasticity of natural antibody repertoires. In addition, we discuss the multiple variations of man-made antibody repertoires designed and validated in the last two decades, which have served as tools to explore how the size, diversity and composition of a repertoire impact the antibody discovery process.

The hypothesis of this article is that the authentic and auratic exhibited objects in museums enter into a dialogue with surrounding paratexts. The paratexts anchor and change the meaning of the exhibited object in the museum context. Recent years have indicated a tendency for museum paratexts to grow increasingly allographic, i.e., visitors generate them both in situ and online as a part of Web 2.0 participation. The verification and documentation of this hypothesis are partly empirical, partly historical. The empirical research consists of an examination of the exhibition and display technologies used today in three different museums and galleries: the Bode Museum in Berlin, the Victoria and Albert Museum and Dr. Johnson's House in London. The historical verification and documentation in this article describe four steps in the development of exhibition technologies: the Boydell Shakespeare Gallery (1789-1805), the post-photographic museum (the 1850s), audio guides, as well as a special focus on how museum paratexts have become independent today in its digital and participatory form. In this way, the article sketches the historical development of curating towards the digital and paratextual participation of visitors and audience. Here the argumentation is based on how the displayed object creates signification in its position between its autonomy and its contexts. The following display technologies are described and analysed: stipple engraving, photography, the audio guide, and the interactive, digital Anota pen and its Internet server. In conclusion, the article asks where the place of signification or meaning of the exhibited object has moved to in the face of the increased degree of visitor participation. The tentative answer is that the signification generating process has moved away from the historical context of the object and towards the contemporary world of the visitor. The article connects this change in cultural discourse with Karin Sander's archaeological imagination and in a wider sense with the concept of negotiation from new historicism.

This paper deals with image quality assessment that is capturing the focus of several research teams from academic and industrial parts. This field has an important role in various applications related to image from acquisition to projection. Numbers of objective image quality metrics have been developed during the last decade. These metrics are more or less correlated to end-user feedback and can be separated in three categories: 1) Full Reference (FR) trying to evaluate the impairment in comparison to the reference image, 2) Reduced Reference (RR) using some features extracted from an image to represent it and compare it with the distorted one and 3) No Reference (NR) measures known distortions such as blockiness, blurriness,. . . without the use of a reference. Unfortunately, the quality assessment community have not achieved to a universal image quality model and only empirical models established on psychophysical experimentation are generally used. In this paper, we focus only on the third category to evaluate the quality of CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) and LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) color reproduction where a blind metric, based on modeling a part of the human visual system behavior. The objective results are validated by single-media and cross-media subjective tests. This allows to study the ability of simulating displays on a reference one.

With the advent of Internet and mobile devices client services and other print production are migrating more and more to online platforms. In a recent technology changeover it has become obvious that there is a growing number of printers and customers who are interested in the print service providers to expand their business to online and mobile platforms. With this technological transition there are some open questions regarding the possibilities of using tablet devices for colour soft proofing and other colour related operations. There are large similarities with desktop display devices but its operating systems are not colour smart yet. There have been some initial attempts to characterize the colour reproduction on this type of devices and find the possibility of using them not just for information content but also for colour managed content. In this study we have tested several tablets (Apple iPad2,Asus Transformer TF101, Samsung Galaxy Tab 1) with different display and OS technology and a software which is intended for colour managed reproduction view. We have measured tablets colour reproduction with the digital version of the GretagMacbeth ColourChecker card and calculated colour differences between colour chart data and displayed data. We have calibrated the Ipad2 with the only existing colour management tool, the Spyder Gallery, and we also tested the chart display with and without software colour correction. We have found that there are differences in the colour reproduction of display technologies and that the possibilities of a real colour managed workflow have yet to be resolved on the OS level of tablet and mobile devices. Abstract: Amorphous carbon nanotubes (aCNTs), synthesized through a low-temperature simple method have been decorated with chemically synthesized different zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures like nanocones and nanoflowers. The as-prepared samples have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM). It has been found that attachment of ZnO nanostructure can effectively enhance the field electron emission properties of the aCNTs. Modification with ZnO nanoflower-like structure can reduce the turn-on field of aCNTs from 8.91 to 3.64V/μm. The results have been explained in terms of increased roughness which in-turn led to large enhancement of the local electric field and thus facilitated electron emission from this hybrid emitter. Abstract: A fast non-interferometric system for measurement of diffraction patterns based on the incidence of partially coherent light in display glass is assembled. The system operates both in transmission and in reflection modes in an environment that is prone to vibrations and misalignments. Asymmetric defects are measured and compared to a white-light interferometer. The system provides an acceptable qualitative measurement for an on-site detection of asymmetric defects leading to a better understanding of this class of imperfections. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: a-C:F thin films with varying fluorine content were prepared by plasma CVD and the sputtering method as inorganic alignment layers for overcoming the disadvantages of conventional liquid crystal (LC) alignment layers. The material and structural properties were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared absorption, and contact angle measurement. For elucidation of the liquid crystal alignment layers, LC cells with a-C:F films were fabricated, followed by examination of the textures of the LC and electro-optical characteristics. The fluorine concentrations of a-C:F films were controlled by changing the mixture gas ratio (R G) in CVD and applied power ratio (R P) in the sputter system. An increase in R G and R P led to increase fluorine incorporation, and the film microstructure changed from a diamond-like to a polymer-like structure. In addition, the sputtered a-C:F films showed a higher fluorination than the CVD sample since the PTFE target was only composed of CF2 functional groups. Surface composition influenced the surface energy of thin films and an extremely hydrophobic property was obtained in the case of fluorine-rich a-C:F films. LC orientations were observed in various compositions of a-C:F films, and the vertically self-aligned LC textures confirmed that a sputtered a-C:F film is a good candidate for an alignment layer without any post-treatment. Abstract: Arrays of carbon nanotube (CNT) emitter dots with a diode structure were fabricated by screen printing and subsequent photolithographic patterning of a CNT paste. Two different types of raw CNTs, which were of narrow and wide distributions of lengths, were used in preparing the photosensitive CNT pastes. Field emission uniformity of the arrays of CNT emitter dots was characterized by statistically analyzing brightness data of individual dots. It seemed that the narrow length distribution of raw CNTs resulted in uniform heights of standing CNT emitters in dots, consequently giving rise to high emission uniformity over an area. Abstract: Virtual reality (VR) systems are used in a variety of applications within industry, education, public and domestic settings. Research assessing reported symptoms and side effects of using VR systems indicates that these factors combine to influence user experiences of virtual reality induced symptoms and effects (VRISE). Three experiments were conducted to assess prevalence and severity of sickness symptoms experienced in each of four VR display conditions; head mounted display (HMD), desktop, projection screen and reality theatre, with controlled examination of two additional aspects of viewing (active vs. passive viewing and light vs. dark conditions). Results indicate 60–70% participants experience an increase in symptoms pre–post exposure for HMD, projection screen and reality theatre viewing and found higher reported symptoms in HMD compared with desktop viewing (nausea symptoms) and in HMD compared with reality theatre viewing (nausea, oculomotor and disorientation symptoms). No effect of lighting condition was found. Higher levels of symptoms were reported in passive viewing compared to active control over movement in the VE. However, the most notable finding was that of high inter- and intra-participant variability. As this supports other findings of individual susceptibility to VRISE, recommendations are offered concerning design and use of VR systems in order to minimise VRISE. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: To have insight to the atomistic process of graphitic ordering in tetrahedral amorphous carbon films which is induced by irradiation of high-energy electrons, the role of temperature in the graphitization was experimentally studied. The change of electron diffraction patterns before and after irradiation at room temperature indicated graphitic ordering, but irradiation at −170 °C resulted in disordering. Systematic measurements of the temporal evolution of electron energy loss spectra with irradiation at various elevated temperatures and data analysis based on the Johnson–Mehl–Avrami model yielded the activation energy for electron-stimulated ordering of as small as ∼0.09±0.01 eV. The most plausible model to account for all the experimental facts is the dissociative diffusion that is triggered by the electron-stimulated displacement of carbon atoms at the initial sites. Abstract: Adapting molecular biology to materials science we developed peptide-based protocols for the assembly and formation of hybrid materials and systems. In this approach of generating molecular scale biomimetic materials, peptides are designed, synthesized, genetically tailored and, finally, utilized as potential molecular linkers in self-assembly, ordered organization, and fabrication of inorganics for specific technological applications. The potential areas range from molecular and nanoscale functional materials to medical fields, e.g., from diagnosis to biosensors. Here, we describe a selection of inorganic binding polypeptides via directed evolution, post-selection modifications through genetic engineering, and utility in practical applications. The selection of the inorganic binders is accomplished through combinatorial biology based peptide libraries. The diversity of applications is highlighted in three case studies. First, the molecular and nanoscale recognition of the polypeptide is presented via nanosize gold particle immobilization onto a molecular template by gold binding polypeptide. Second, we present that the alkaline phosphatase fused with multiple repeats of gold binding polypeptide can still be enzymatically active when it is immobilized onto a solid substrate. Abstract: A series of emission current measurements were taken from various types of multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) films in order to examine their stability for electron field emission. We found that the MWCNTs films grown by the catalytic thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method exhibited much improved emission stability as compared to MWCNT films grown by the plasma-enhanced CVD (PECVD) method. We explain this difference of performance by referring to the graphitic order of these MWCNTs as detected by transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Results indicate that MWCNTs with high-order tubular structures demonstrate stable electron field emission. The best performing sample exhibits a constant current degradation of ∼3% per hour at an emission current density of ∼1 mJ/cm2. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Visualization can provide the much needed computer-assisted design and analysis environment to foster problem-based learning, while Virtual Reality (VR) can provide the environment for hands-on manipulation, stimulating interactive learning in engineering and the sciences. In this paper, an interactive 2D and 3D (hybrid) environment is described, which facilitates collaborative learning and research and utilizes techniques in visualization and VR, therefore enhancing the interpretation of physical problems within these fields. The environment described, termed VizClass, incorporates a specially designed lecture room and laboratory integrating both 2-D and 3-D spatial activities by coupling a series of interactive projection display boards (touch-sensitive whiteboards) and a semi-immersive 3D wall display. The environment is particularly appealing for studying critical, complex engineering problems, for example, where time-varying feature modifications and coupling between multiple modes of movement are occurring. This paper describes the hardware architecture designed for this new hybrid environment as well as an initial application within the environment to the study of a real case history building subjected to a variety of earthquakes. The example simulation uses field measured seismic data sources, and illustrations of simple visual paradigms to provide an enhanced understanding of the physical model, the damage accumulated by the model, and the association between the measured and observed data. A detailed evaluation survey was also conducted to determine the merits of the presented environment and the techniques implemented. Results substantiate the plausibility of using these techniques for more general, everyday users. Interactive learning, critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and problem-based learning are all critical elements for enhancing engineering education. Visualization can provide the much needed computer-assisted design and analysis environment to foster problem-based learning, while virtual reality (VR) can provide the environment for hands-on manipulation, stimulating interactive learning in the engineering classroom. To provide such a space, at the University of California, Irvine a new interactive, spatially balanced learning environment, termed VizClass, has been developed. VizClass incorporates a specially designed lecture room and laboratory integrating both 2- and 3-dimensional spatial learning by coupling a series of interactive projection display boards (touch sensitive whiteboards) and a semi-immersive 3D wall display. Control of devices integrated with VizClass is supported via a centrally located, easy to activate, touch-sensitive display. Digital material, including slides, web content, video clips, sound files, numerical simulations, or animations may be loaded and presented by instructors using either 2D or 3D modalities. This environment has already been integrated into both undergraduate and graduate level courses, providing a balanced spatial learning environment for students. Molecular biomimetics can be defined as mimicking function, synthesis, or structure of materials and systems at the molecular scale using biological pathways. Here, inorganic-binding polypeptides are used as molecular building blocks to control assembly and formation of functional inorganic and hybrid materials and systems for nano- and nanobiotechnology applications. These polypeptides are selected via phage or cell surface display technologies and modified by molecular biology to tailor their binding and multifunctionality properties. The potential of this approach in creating new materials systems with useful physical and biological properties is enormous. This mostly stems from molecular recognition and self-assembly characteristics of the polypeptides plus the added advantage of genetic manipulation of their composition and structure. In this review, we highlight the basic premises of molecular biomimetics, describe the approaches in selecting and engineering inorganic-binding polypeptides, and present examples of their utility as molecular linkers in current and future applications. Autoimmune diseases are a significant area of unmet medical need in the Western World, but human antibodies are an emerging drug class that could address this demand. Some autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, are currently benefiting from antibody treatment and new and existing technologies for antibody generation could facilitate the production of effective human antibodies as future drug candidates for other autoimmune diseases. Several methods of generating human antibodies for use as therapeutics have been established, the most commonly used being phage display and transgenic mouse technologies and more recently, cell-free display technologies have also emerged. In this review, we explain the principles behind the various methods of antibody generation and highlight some potential benefits of certain approaches in the context of treatment of autoimmune disease. A molecular biomimetics approach is presented in developing polypeptide-based coatings for inorganic surfaces. In general, inorganic surface-binding polypeptides are genetically engineered using cell surface and phage display technologies. These peptides contain short amino acid sequences, known to bind specifically to selected inorganics. Based on the sequences of the polypeptides that were recently selected by this (e.g. Au, Pt and Pd) and other groups, one may find certain specificity, e.g. hydrophobic and hydroxyl amino acids, common among noble metal-binders. We show that an engineered gold-binding protein self-assembles onto gold surface forming monomolecular and highly structured crystallographic domains. The protein-based molecular films could provide robust templates for potential utility in practical nanotechnological and bionanotechnological applications. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Affinity maturation is a key technique in protein engineering which is used to improve affinity and binding interactions in vitro, a process often required to fulfil the therapeutic potential of antibodies. There are many available display technologies and maturation methods developed over the years, which have been instrumental in the production of therapeutic antibodies. However, due to the inherent limitations in display capacity of these technologies, accommodation of expansive and complex library builds is still a challenge. In this article, we discuss our recent efforts in the affinity maturation of a difficult antibody lineage using an unbiased approach, which sought to explore a larger sequence space through the application of DNA recombination and shuffling techniques across the entire antibody region and selections using ribosome display. We also highlight the key features of several display technologies and diversification methods, and discuss the strategies devised by different groups in response to different challenges. Particular attention is drawn to examples which are aimed at the expansion of sequence, structural or experimental diversity through different means and approaches. As the need for super-high-resolution displays with various form factors has increased, it has become necessary to produce high-performance thin-film transistors (TFTs) that enable faster switching and higher current driving of each pixel in the display. Over the past few decades, hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) has been widely utilized as a TFT channel material. More recently, to meet the requirement of new types of displays such as organic light-emitting diode displays, and also to overcome the performance and reliability issues of a-Si:H, low-temperature polycrystalline silicon and amorphous oxide semiconductors have partly replaced a-Si:H channel materials. Basic material properties and device structures of TFTs in commercial displays are explored, and then the potential of atomically thin layered transition metal dichalcogenides as next-generation channel materials is discussed., (© 2020 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
