The transition to reactor-relevant materials for the plasma facing components (PFCs) is an important and necessary step to provide a proof of principle that the stellarator concept can meet the requirements of a future fusion reactor by demonstrating high performance steady-state operation. As a first step to gain experience with tungsten as plasma-facing material in the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator, graphite tiles coated with an approximately 10 µm MedC tungsten layer (NILPRP Bucharest) were installed to complete the ECRH beam dump area in two of the five plasma vessel modules over an area of approximately one square meter each. In addition, tungsten baffle tiles are installed (40 tiles in total) with either bulk tungsten as part of NBI shine-through target or with a tungsten heavy alloy (W95-Ni3.5-Cu1.5) to replace the graphite tiles that were previously thermally overloaded. Based on an advanced diffusive field line tracing method and EMC3-Eirene simulations, the overloaded baffle tiles were redesigned by making the tiles thinner (i.e. moving the plasma-facing surface (PFS) away from the hot plasma region) and by reducing the local angle of incidence through toroidal displacement of the watershed. Significant erosion of the tungsten tiles can only be expected if sputtering by impurity ions such as carbon or oxygen ions contributes. However, the resulting central concentration of tungsten and the corresponding radiation losses are expected to be marginal. The expected deposition of carbon on the tungsten surfaces in the baffle regions mitigates further the possible tungsten enrichment in the core plasma. In OP2.1, no adverse effects of the installed tungsten PFCs on the plasma performance were observed during normal plasma operation. With the design changes made in the baffle area, the predicted heat load reductions could be experimentally confirmed.

After a long device enhancement phase, scientific operation resumed in 2022. The main new device components are the water cooling of all plasma facing components and the new water-cooled high heat flux divertor units. Water cooling allowed for the first long-pulse operation campaign. A maximum discharge length of 8 min was achieved with a total heating energy of 1.3 GJ. Safe divertor operation was demonstrated in attached and detached mode. Stable detachment is readily achieved in some magnetic configurations but requires impurity seeding in configurations with small magnetic pitch angle within the edge islands. Progress was made in the characterization of transport mechanisms across edge magnetic islands: Measurement of the potential distribution and flow pattern reveals that the islands are associated with a strong poloidal drift, which leads to rapid convection of energy and particles from the last closed flux surface into the scrape-off layer. Using the upgraded plasma heating systems, advanced heating scenarios were developed, which provide improved energy confinement comparable to the scenario, in which the record triple product for stellarators was achieved in the previous operation campaign. However, a magnetic configuration-dependent critical heating power limit of the electron cyclotron resonance heating was observed. Exceeding the respective power limit leads to a degradation of the confinement.

Recently, experiments on basic plasma physics issues for solving future problems in fusion energy have been performed on a Large Helical Device. There are several problems to be solved in future devices for fusion energy. Emerging issues in burning plasma are: alpha-channeling (ion heating by alpha particles), turbulence and transport in electron dominant heating helium ash exhaust, reduction of the divertor heat load. To solve these problems, understanding the basic plasma physics of (1) wave–particle interaction through (inverse) Landau damping, (2) characteristics of electron-scale (high- k ) turbulence, (3) ion mixing and the isotope effect, and (4) turbulence spreading and detachment, is necessary. This overview discusses the experimental studies on these issues and turbulent transport in multi-ion plasma and other issues in the appendix.

The results of the first experimental series to produce a plasma using the radio frequency discharge (RF) above the ion cyclotron frequency at relatively low magnetic fields (0.5–0.6 T) in the Large Helical Device (LHD) are presented 1.43 MW of RF power produced target plasma with density up to 6 × 10 ^18 m ^−3 to deuterium. Tangential NBI application into such a plasma increases plasma parameters. Electron temperatures up to ≈0.9 keV and densities up to ≈2.4 × 10 ^19 m ^−3 had been achieved, and the maximum value of < β _dia > was 2.6%. These experiments open possibilities for new regimes of LHD operation which are also interested to W7-X.

We assess the turbulent particle transport being responsible for the limitation of the confinement and, thus, the overall performance of the neoclassically optimized stellarator Wendelstein 7-X. The radial particle transport is experimentally inferred from the evaluation of impurity injection into turbulence reduced and enhanced plasma scenarios revealing a completely different confinement behavior. The impact of the density gradient on the turbulent ion transport is theoretically estimated using large-scale non-linear gyro-kinetic simulations enabling, for the first time in Wendelstein 7-X, a quantitative comparison to the experimentally assessed impurity transport properties. We demonstrate that impurity transport in most of the Wendelstein 7-X discharges, up to now impossible to cover only with neoclassical estimations, is dominated by turbulence and can be modelled via gyro-kinetic simulations.

This study aim is to develop further an ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) method of plasma production in stellarators based on the minority heating. The previous studies demonstrate production of low density plasma (9.5 × 10 ^17 m ^−3 ) at low power of up to 0.2 MW. The higher ICRF heating power experiments become possible after introducing a programmable ICRF power ramp up at the front of the ICRF pulse. With this trick, all the shots went with the antenna voltage within the safe range. Increase of the ICRF power predictably results in increase of the density of produced plasma. Without pre-ionization the plasma density achieved was 6 × 10 ^18 m ^−3 which is 6 times higher than in previous experiments. However, the electron temperature was not high, the light impurities were hot fully stripped, and there were no recombination peaks after termination of the ICRF pulse. Plasma density is too low to provide good conditions for efficient plasma heating. For the reference, the ICRF heating of high density cold plasma prepared by electron cyclotron resonance heating is performed. Both electrons and ions were heated to high temperatures, and this plasma state is sustained. The antenna–plasma coupling was much better which result in larger heating power with the lower antenna voltage.

The influence of plasma beta effects on the edge plasma transport in the Wendelstein 7-X standard configuration is studied systematically by using EMC3-EIRENE combined with a 3D equilibrium code named HINT. The magnetic topology changes induced by plasma beta effects are significantly reflected in plasma transport behaviors and heat flux patterns on divertor targets. After validating the modeling strategy by comparisons with experimental data, the extended simulations for high performance plasmas show that the threshold separatrix density for accessing the power detachment is reduced in higher beta plasmas. Compared with the vacuum field case, the impurity radiation distributions with finite beta effects are modified in the magnetic island region. The divertor heat flux is distributed more evenly along the toroidal direction on the strike line at the vertical target. The strike line on the horizontal target moves towards the pumping gap with an increase in the plasma beta. In addition, the different pressure profiles with the same central beta also result in a modified heat flux pattern on the divertor targets.

The objective of the Fourth Technical Meeting on Fusion Data Processing, Validation and Analysis was to provide a platform during which a set of topics relevant to fusion data processing, validation and analysis are discussed with the view of extrapolating needs to next step fusion devices such as ITER. The validation and analysis of experimental data obtained from diagnostics used to characterize fusion plasmas are crucial for a knowledge-based understanding of the physical processes governing the dynamics of these plasmas. This paper presents the recent progress and achievements in the domain of plasma diagnostics and synthetic diagnostics data analysis (including image processing, regression analysis, inverse problems, deep learning, machine learning, big data and physics-based models for control) reported at the meeting. The progress in these areas highlight trends observed in current major fusion confinement devices. A special focus is dedicated on data analysis requirements for ITER and DEMO with a particular attention paid to artificial intelligence for automatization and improving reliability of control processes.

During its second operational campaign (OP 1.2a) W7-X operated with an edge island divertor. Much higher densities (1020m−3) than in to the previous, limiter campaign were achieved. In order to asses this improved performance and the nature of transport with regard to the expected higher densities and other parameters such as the electron and ion temperature, the electric field and plasma flow, measurements at the plasma edge were conducted with reciprocating probe, mounted on a Manipulator. The probe contains a set of Langmuir pins, Mach probes, compensation coils and a set of 3D pick up coils for the measurement of the local magnetic field and fluctuations, and an ion sensitive probe. It has been observed, in addition to differences due to the magnetic configurations, that the magnetic topology is sensitive to the plasma conditions, especially to changes due to a evolving toroidal plasma current. Measurements from divertor cameras showed that an increasing toroidal current in the standard configuration broadened the heat flux and shifted the strike line considerably. These down-stream observation can be complemented with the measurements at the mid-plane with the manipulator mounted probes. During the experiments the edge island remnant was identified with the measured edge plasma profiles and compared with the predictions from the field line tracing code. Those electron densities and temperatures have been used as an input for understanding edge transport with the EMC3-EIRENE modeling. The results from EMC3-EIRENE also help improve the caculated density profiles, since the modelling provides a profile of the effective charge Zeff. For successful operation of Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) control of plasma impurity content and fuel recycling is required. This can be achieved by using wall conditioning methods. During the first divertor operation campaign (OP1.2a) of W7-X glow discharge conditioning (GDC), weekly in hydrogen and daily in helium for impurity and hydrogen removal respectively, was used in the absence of the magnetic field. He electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) discharges were applied for density control in hydrogen plasmas during experimental days. The optimization of GDC and He ECRH wall conditioning on W7-X are presented. Solutions for glow discharge ignition problems are examined. The suitable He – GDC parameters, i.e. anode current and neutral gas pressure, are defined to keep the balance between maximum possible hydrogen removal rate and minimum plasma – facing component (PFC) erosion. Sequences of short He – ECRH pulses, so-called pulse trains, has been successfully implemented. The effect of pulse train main parameter variation such as gas prefill, input power, pulse length, duty cycle is described. The efficiency of single He recovery discharges and pulse trains are compared. The results of this work show significant improvement of wall cleaning efficiency. Controlling the recycling of hydrogen and the release of impurities from the plasma facing components proved to be essential and challenging throughout the first divertor campaign on W7-X. This paper discusses the conditioning requirements throughout the first divertor campaign on Wendelstein 7-X. Baking at 150 °C and glow discharge conditioning (GDC) in H2 is performed after the initial pump down of the vacuum vessel. Experimental programs in hydrogen are interlaced with He discharges to desaturate the wall from hydrogen, recover good recycling conditions and hence establish plasma density control. Optimized He ECRH wall conditioning procedures consisted of sequences of short discharges with fixed duty cycle. He-GDC remained however needed before each experimental day to fully offset the hydrogen inventory build-up. A significant increase in the divertor temperature is observed throughout an operational day, enhancing outgassing of CO and H2O. Preliminary recombination-diffusion modelling of hydrogen outgassing suggests enhanced diffusion to deeper surface layers with increasing wall temperature, which results in better wall pumping. This indicates that the experienced plasma performance degradation throughout an operational day results from increased impurity outgassing at higher wall temperature rather than hydrogen saturation of the wall. During the interaction of the scrape off layer (SOL) plasma with the first wall the evolution of both wall and plasma are tightly coupled: The erosion of the first wall leads to an impurity concentration in the plasma which affects the particle and power balance in the plasma. In turn the impurities, when leaving the plasma via transport, can form deposits and mixed materials, far away from their initial source location. These deposits can be eroded, allowing the impurities to stepwise migrate through the fusion device until they end up at a location where the plasma at the wall is cold enough and no further erosion occurs. To describe these processes an integrated model of surface evolution and plasma transport of impurities is needed. The WallDYN code achieves this required coupling of processes by parameterising the output of surface evolution- and plasma impurity-migration-codes by analytical models. For a given fixed background plasma it evolves the surface composition, derives impurity flux into and from the plasma and can from this derive the impurity densities in the plasma. This paper will show the importance of including this recycling of impurities at the wall in impurity migration modelling: The 13CH4seeding experiment performed in the Wendelstein 7-X Stellerator is modelled using the recent extension of the WallDYN code to 3D plasma and wall geometries. A comparison with post mortem analysis of the 13C deposition shows both qualitative and quantitative agreement with the WallDYN calculations.
