The room-temperature parameters of the amplifier are a gain of 15 dB, a bandwidth of 500 MHz, and an excess noise temperature of 63 K (a noise figure of 0.86 dB).

Abstract

The mixer consists of a small metallic wafer, in which are embedded the semiconductor diodes, the waveguide mount is used to couple the diode wafer to the signal circuit, an RF tuning element, and a 3 mm coaxial connector for the IF output terminal. The cross-sectional dimension is that of the waveguide flange (19 mm x 19 mm, 0.75" x 0.75"), the overall length is nominally 25 mm (1.0 inch). This component is to be used as a single-ended RF mixer with four replacement mixer diodes, operating in the three millimeter wavelength band.

15. Transcriptional mapping of human respiratory syncytial virus

Abstract

A transcriptional map for human respiratory syncytial virus was determined by measuring the kinetics of viral gene inactivation in response to UV irradiation. Monolayer cell cultures of respiratory syncytial virus-infected HEp-2 cells were exposed to UV light, and residual viral RNA synthesis was monitored both by gel electrophoresis and by hybridization to dot blots of cloned cDNAs of the 10 known viral genes. Target sizes for the 10 individual viral genes were calculated relative to the UV sensitivity of intracellular viral genome replication. Target size analysis indicated that the 10 viral genes were transcribed as a single transcriptional unit and that the transcription of an individual gene was dependent on the prior transcription of all the preceding genes. The order of gene transcription (with nomenclature according to encoded proteins) was determined to proceed from the promoter as follows: 14K, 11K, N, P, M, 9.5K, 36K, F, 24K, L.

16. Nucleotide sequences for the gene junctions of human respiratory syncytial virus reveal distinctive features of intergenic structure and gene order.

Abstract

Complete sequences for the intergenic regions of the genome of human respiratory syncytial virus were obtained by dideoxynucleotide sequencing using synthetic oligonucleotides. These experiments established that the 10 respiratory syncytial viral genes are arranged, without additional intervening genes, in the order 3' 1C-1B-N-P-M-1A-G-F-22K-L 5'. For the first nine genes, the exact gene boundaries were identified by comparison of the genomic sequences with previously determined mRNA sequences. The intergenic regions varied in length from 1 to 52 nucleotides and lacked any obvious conserved features of primary or secondary structure except that each sequence ended (3' to 5') with an adenosine residue. The exact start site of the 10th gene, the L gene, was not determined. However, RNA blot hybridization using a synthetic oligonucleotide designed from the genomic sequence mapped the L gene to within 54 nucleotides of the end of the penultimate 22K gene. The lack of conservation of chain length and nucleotide sequence for the respiratory syncytial viral intergenic regions, together with the complexity of the genetic map, contrasts with previous observations for other nonsegmented negative-strand viruses.

Abstract

A review is presented on the 94 GHz mixer diode development, conversion loss, and noise figure measurements. Balanced mixer results at 94 GHz are described using a successfully demonstrated broadband 3 dB directional coupler. Tunnel diodes were investigated as mixers, but were dropped when the results of welded junction diodes appeared to be much superior. The design of 200 to 400 MHz broadband amplifiers for use as preamps and post amplifiers is presented along with test data. The design of the 94 GHz solid state source is described. The transistor driver is designed to provide 16 watts at 290 MHz. The transistor driver or exciter consists of an oscillator at 72 MHz followed by a buffer, an amplifier-multiplier to 290 MHz, and two stages of power gain to achieve 20 watts. A varactor multiplier chain, consisting of six stages, follows the transistor driver. The six varactor stages chosen are: four triplers followed by two doublers. (Author)

Abstract

On the basis of the results presented in this report it is believed that the use of varactor harmonic generators for the millimeter wave range has been proven practical. A 70 to 140 GHz doubler with an output of approximately 15 milliwatts has been demonstrated. Low frequency capacitance and resistance measurements and the 20% efficiency obtained in doubling from 70 to 140 GHz indicate that the cutoff frequency of the varactor is approximately 1000 GHz. Vibration tests were run on a number of diodes with only one failure. These tests consisted of both stepped and continuous changing frequencies from 10 to 60 Hz, with a G force of up to 7 G's at 60 Hz and 8.6 G's at 30 Hz. Conversion loss measurements were presented on 20 of the mixer diodes which had their IF ports modified for balanced mixer development. The average conversion loss of these 20 units was approximately 7.5 db or approximately 0.5 db better than the previously delivered 33 mixer diodes. The significance of this improvement was due to greater experience and not to any modifications in the mixer design. Some preliminary results were also presented on an RG-99 hybrid to be used in the balanced mixer. (Author)
