Conductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging electroactive materials for (opto-)electronics. However, it remains a great challenge to achieve reliable MOF-based devices via the existing synthesis methods that are compatible with the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technology, as the surface roughness of thus-far synthetic MOF films or pellets is rather high for efficient electrode contact. Here, we develop an on-liquid-gallium surface synthesis (OLGSS) strategy under chemical vapor deposition (CVD) conditions for the controlled growth of two-dimensional conjugated MOF (2D c-MOF) thin films with ten-fold improvement of surface flatness (surface roughness can reach as low as ~2 {\AA}) compared with MOF films grown by the traditional methods. Supported by theoretical modeling, we unveil a layer-by-layer CVD growth mode for constructing flattening surfaces, that is triggered by the high adhesion energy between gallium (Ga) and planar aromatic ligands. We further demonstrate the generality of the as-proposed OLGSS strategy by reproducing such a flat surface over nine different 2D c-MOF films with variable thicknesses (~2 to 208 nm) and large lateral sizes (over 1 cm2). The resultant ultra-smooth 2D c-MOF films enable the formation of high-quality electrical contacts with gold (Au) electrodes, leading to a reduction of contact resistance by over ten orders of magnitude compared to the traditional uneven MOF films. Furthermore, due to the efficient interfacial interaction benifited from the high-quality contacts, the prepared van der Waals heterostructure (vdWH) of OLGSS c-MOF and MoS2 exhibits intriguing photoluminescence (PL) enhancement, PL peak shift and large work function modulation. The establishment of the reliable OLGSS method provides the chances to push the development of MOF electronics and the construction of multicomponent MOF-based heterostructure materials.

Two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) are an interesting class of 2D materials since their reticular synthesis allows the tailored design of structures and functionalities. For many of their applications the mechanical stability and performance is an important aspect. Here, we use a computational approach involving a density-functional based tight-binding method to calculate the in-plane elastic properties of about 40 COFs with a honeycomb lattice. Based on those calculations, we develop two coarse-grained descriptions: one based on a spring network and the second using a network of elastic beams. The models allow us to connect the COF force constants to the molecular force constants of the linker molecules and thus enable an efficient description of elastic deformations. To illustrate this aspect, we calculate the deformation energy of different COFs containing the equivalent of a Stone-Wales defect and find very good agreement with the coarse-grained description., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures + supplementary information

The physical origin of the so-called chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect has puzzled experimental and theoretical researchers over the past few years. Early experiments were interpreted in terms of unconventional spin-orbit interactions mediated by the helical geometry. However, more recent experimental studies have clearly revealed that electronic exchange interactions also play a key role in the magnetic response of chiral molecules in singlet states. In this investigation, we use spin-polarized closed shell density functional theory calculations to address the influence of exchange contributions to the interaction between helical molecules as well as of helical molecules with magnetized substrates. We show that exchange effects result in differences in the interaction properties with magnetized surfaces, shedding light into the possible origin of two recent important experimental results: enantiomer separation and magnetic exchange force microscopy with AFM tips functionalized with helical peptides.

Chiral degrees of freedom occur in matter and in electromagnetic fields and constitute an area of research that is experiencing renewed interest driven by recent observations of the chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect in chiral molecules and engineered nanomaterials. The CISS effect underpins the fact that charge transport through nanoscopic chiral structures favors a particular electronic spin orientation, resulting in large room-temperature spin polarizations. Observations of the CISS effect suggest opportunities for spin control and for the design and fabrication of room-temperature quantum devices from the bottom up, with atomic-scale precision. Any technology that relies on optimal charge transport, including quantum devices for logic, sensing, and storage, may benefit from chiral quantum properties. These properties can be theoretically and experimentally investigated from a quantum information perspective, which is presently lacking. There are uncharted implications for the quantum sciences once chiral couplings can be engineered to control the storage, transduction, and manipulation of quantum information. This forward-looking perspective provides a survey of the experimental and theoretical fundamentals of chiral-influenced quantum effects, and presents a vision for their future roles in enabling room-temperature quantum technologies.

Achieving efficient and stable ultraviolet emission is a challenging goal in optoelectronic devices. Herein, we investigate the UV luminescence of zinc germanate Zn2GeO4 microwires by means of photoluminescence measurements as a function of temperature and excitation conditions. The emitted UV light is composed of two bands (a broad one and a narrow one) associated with the native defects structure. In addition, with the aid of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the energy positions of the electronic levels related to native defects in Zn2GeO4 have been calculated. In particular, our results support that zinc interstitials are the responsible for the narrow UV band, which is, in turn, split into two components with different temperature dependence behaviour. The origin of the two components is explained on the basis of the particular location of Zn_i in the lattice and agrees with DFT calculations. Furthermore, a kinetic luminescence model is proposed to ascertain the temperature evolution of this UV emission. These results pave the way to exploit defect engineering in achieving functional optoelectronic devices to operate in the UV region.

In this work, a combined modelling approach for crack propagation in defective graphene is presented. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used to obtain material parameters (Young's modulus and Poisson ratio) and to determine the energy contributions during the crack evolution. The elastic properties are then applied in phase-field continuum simulations which are based on the Griffith energy criterion for fracture. In particular, the influence of point defects on elastic properties and the fracture toughness are investigated. For the latter, we obtain values consistent with recent experimental findings. Further, we discuss alternative definitions of an effective fracture toughness, which accounts for the conditions of crack propagation and establishes a link between dynamic, discrete and continuous, quasi-static fracture processes on MD level and continuum level, respectively. In this work, we demonstrate the tunability of electronic properties of Si/SiO2 substrate by molecular and ionic surface modifications. The change in the electronic properties such as the work function (WF) and electron affinity (EA), were experimentally measured by contact potential difference (CPD) technique and theoretically supported by DFT calculations. We attribute these molecular electronic effects mainly to the variations of molecular and surface dipoles of the ionic and neutral species. We have previously showed that for the alkylhalide monolayers, changing the tail group from Cl to I decreased the work function of the substrate. Here we report on the opposite trend of WF changes, i.e. increase of the WF, obtained by using the anions of those halides from Cl$^{-}$ to I$^{-}$. This trend was observed on self-assembled alkylamonium halide (-NH3$^{+}$ X$^{-}$, where X$^{-}$=Cl$^{-}$, Br$^{-}$, I$^{-}$) monolayers modified substrates. The monolayer' formation was supported by Ellipsometry measurements, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy. Comparison of the theoretical and experimental data suggests that ionic surface dipole depends mainly on the polarizability and the position of the counter halide anion along with the organization and packaging of the layer. The power of polymorphism in carbon is vividly manifested by the numerous applications of carbon-based nano-materials. Ranging from environmental issues to biomedical applications, it has the potential to address many of today's dire problems. However, an understanding of the mechanism of transformation between carbon allotropes at a microscopic level is crucial for its development into highly desirable materials. In this work we report such a phase transformation between two carbon allotropes, from penta-graphene (a semiconductor) into biphenylene (a metal) under uniaxial loading. Using density functional theory we demonstrated that the phase transformation occurs through a synchronized reorganization of the carbon atoms with a simultaneous drop in energy. The results of this work confirms that penta-graphene is a meta-stable structure. On the other hand, a rigorous analysis of biphenylene suggests that it is an energetically, mechanically, dynamically and thermally stable structure, both in the form of a sheet and a tube. Its electronic structure suggests that it is metallic in both these forms. Therefore, this work unravels the possibility of phase transition in 2-D carbon systems and thereby designing nano-materials capable of altering their properties in an instant. Furthermore, heating biphenylene sheet at a high temperature (5000K) revealed another phase transformation into a more stable hexa-graphene like structure. This proposes thermal annealing as a possible method of synthesizing one 2-D carbon allotrope from another.

Graphene, one of the strongest materials ever discovered, triggered the exploration of many 2D materials in the last decade. However, the successful synthesis of a stable nanomaterial requires a rudimentary understanding of the relationship between its structure and strength. In the present study, we investigate the mechanical properties of 8 different carbon-based 2D nanomaterials by performing extensive density functional theory calculations. The considered structures were just recently either experimentally synthesized or theoretically predicted. The corresponding stress-strain curves and elastic moduli are reported. They can be useful in training force field parameters for large scale simulations. A comparative analysis of these results revealed a direct relationship between atomic density per area and elastic modulus. Furthermore, for the networks that have an armchair and a zigzag orientation, we observed that they were more stretchable in the zigzag direction than the armchair direction. A critical analysis of the angular distributions and radial distribution functions suggested that it could be due to the higher ability of the networks to suppress the elongations of the bonds in the zigzag direction by deforming the bond angles. The structural interpretations provided in this work not only improve the general understanding of a 2D material's strength but also enables us to rationally design them for higher qualities.

The growth of single and multilayer graphene nano-flakes on MgO and ZrO2 at low temperatures is shown through transmission electron microscopy. The graphene nano-flakes are ubiquitously anchored at step edges on MgO (100) surfaces. Density functional theory investigations on MgO (100) indicate C2H2 decomposition and carbon adsorption at step-edges. Hence, both the experimental and theoretical data highlight the importance of step sites for graphene growth on MgO.

The dissociative adsorption of methane on variously oxidized Pd, Pt and Pd-Pt surfaces is investigated using density-functional theory, as a step towards understanding the combustion of methane on these materials. For Pd-Pt alloys, models of surface oxide structures are built on the basis of known oxides on Pd and Pt. The methane adsorption energy presents large variations depending on the oxide structure and composition. Adsorption is endothermic on the bare Pd(111) metal surface as well as on stable thin layer oxide structures such as the ($\sqrt{5}\times\sqrt{5}$) surface oxide on Pd(100) and the PtO$_2$-like oxide on Pt(111). Instead, large adsorption energies are obtained for the (100) surface of bulk PdO, for metastable mixed Pd$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$O$_{4/3}$ oxide layers on Pt(100), and for Pd-Pt(111) surfaces covered with one oxygen monolayer. In the latter case, we find a net thermodynamic preference for a direct conversion of methane to methanol, which remains adsorbed on the oxidized metal substrates via weak hydrogen-bond interactions.

The segregation behavior of the bimetallic alloys PtPd and CoCr in the case of bare surfaces and in the presence of an oxygen ad-layer has been studied by means of first-principles modeling based on density-functional theory (DFT). For both systems, change of the d-band filling due to charge transfer between the alloy components, resulting in a shift of the d-band center of surface atoms compared to the pure components, drives the surface segregation and governs the chemical reactivity of the bimetals. In contrast to previous findings but consistent with analogous PtNi alloy systems, enrichment of Pt atoms in the surface layer and of Pd atoms in the first subsurface layer has been found in Pt-rich PtPd alloy, despite the lower surface energy of pure Pd compared to pure Pt. Similarly, Co surface and Cr subsurface segregation occurs in Co-rich CoCr alloys. However, in the presence of adsorbed oxygen, Pd and Cr occupy preferentially surface sites due to their lower electronegativity and thus stronger oxygen affinity compared to Pt and Co, respectively. In either cases, the calculated oxygen adsorption energies on the alloy surfaces are larger than on the pure components when the more noble components are present in the subsurface layers.
