Abstract

Clinically diseased Indian major carps were collected for a period of one year between July 2018 to June 2019, from cultured ponds of two districts viz., SPSR Nellore and West Godavari districts of Andhra Pradesh, India. Based on the gross pathology, four diseases viz., haemorrhagic septicaemia, abdominal dropsy, fin rot and tail rot were identified. Various genera of bacterial pathogens isolated were characterized by phenotypic and conventional biochemical methods. The pathogenic bacteria isolated in the present study were species of Aeromonas, Pseudomonas and Enterobacteriacea family. Seven species of Aeromonas viz., Aeromonas hydrophila, A. tecta, A. caviea, A. sobria, A. veronii, A. schubertii and A. encheleia; four species of Pseudomonas viz., Pseudomonas sp., Pseudomonas stutzeri, P. diminuta and P. fluoroscenes; five species of Enterobacteriacea family viz., Citrobacter freundi, Serratia rubidaea, S. fonticola, Klebsiella pneumoniae ssp pneumoniae and Enterobacteriacea group were identified by means of conventional biochemical tests. Based on the identification of bacterial pathogens, the diseases were grouped into seven categories viz., aeromoniasis, pseudomoniasis, enterobacteriaceae infections, aeromoniasis + pseudomoniasis, aeromoniasis + enterobacteriaceae infections, pseudomoniasis + enterobacteriaceae infections and mixed bacterial infections (aeromoniasis + enterobacteriaceae infections + pseudomoniasis). The results of the present study indicate widespread septicaemic bacterial pathologies in the Indian major carps, leading to severe economic losses to the carp farmers due to the reoccurrence of bacterial diseases and fish mortalities. Abstract

In the modern days, there has been an increase in consumption of processed foods. A lot of synthetic additives are being added in the processed foods and consumption of these additives causes health hazards. Hence, there is an increased demand for additives from natural sources as they doesn't cause any harm, but increases the immunity to the consumers. The present study was conducted to evaluate the phenolic contents, antioxidant, antimicrobial properties of ethanolic extract of garlic peel and aqueous extract of lemon. The total phenolic content of lemon extract and garlic peel extract was found to be 680.61 ppm and 1761.5ppm. According to the findings, BHT had the highest radical scavenging activity of 82.69±0.85 percent at 200 mg/L concentration, whereas lemon extract and garlic peel had DPPH values of 55.96 percent and 66.08 percent, respectively at same concentration of 200 mg/L. Garlic peel extract has exhibited around 80% efficiency compared to Ampicilin. Garlic peel extract at a concentration 100 ppm exhibited maximum zone of inhibition against B. subtilis (1.65 mm), S. aureus (1.23 mm) and E. coli (1.55 mm). Significant levels of total and individual phenolic content and antioxidant activity of Lemon and Garlic peel extracts were observed. Though, both garlic peel extract and lemon extract exhibited antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, garlic peel extract had higher phenolic content, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. It is concluded that garlic peel extract may be applied in food industry as an additive along with lemon extract not only for the extension of shelf life, but also for enhancing flavours. Department of Nuclear Physics, University of Madras, Guindy Campus, Chennai-600 025, India E-mail : stephen_arum@hotmail.com Department of Inorganic Chemistry, University of Madras, Guindy Campus, Chennai-600 025, India Nanostructured alloy formed by magnetic and nonmagnetic components play a significant role in sensor applications due to their unique magnetic properties. An alloy of the thermally immiscible constituents iron and silver was deposited at three different current densities by pulsed electrodeposition method from a two electrode single bath system containing ferric nitrate, silver nitrate and sodium perchlorate. The surface morphology of the as deposited alloy was investigated using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) analysis while the alloy structure was examined by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). XRD analysis showed that alloys exhibit fcc structure. FESEM analysis reveals that in the deposit, the spherical nanosized particles grow to form dendrites. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies indicate the presence of metallic silver and iron. Furthermore, the magnetic properties of samples were characterized on a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) which unveils that the Fe-Ag alloy deposits were ferromagnetic in nature.

44. Effect of boron on growth, nutrition and fertility status of large cardamom in Sikkim Himalaya, India

Abstract

Field experiment was conducted at Indian Cardamom Research Institute, Regional Research Station, Spices Board Kabi research farm North Sikkim to find out the effect of Boron nutrition on growth, nutrient content and soil fertility status of large cardamom. The experiment was laid out in RBD comprising seven treatments (T1 soil application of borax@2.5 kg ha-1 ,T2 soil application of borax@5.0 kg ha-1, T3 foliar application of borax@0.25%, T4 foliar application of borax @0.5%, T5 foliar application of borax@0.25%+ soil application of borax@2.5 kg ha-1, T6 foliar application of borax@0.5%+ soil application of borax@2.5 kg ha-1 and T7 control). Results reveal that foliar application of borax@0.5%+ soil application of borax@2.5 kg ha-1 recorded the maximum values of immature tillers per clump (2.98 and 3.95) and mature tillers per clump (2.99 and 3.11) during both September, 2013 and March, 2014 and vegetative buds per clump (2.90 ). With regards to nutrient content in leaf of large cardamom among the treatments, foliar application of borax@0.5%+soil application of borax@2.5 kg ha-1 recorded highest nutrient acquisition However, its effect was statistically non significant on K, S, Ca, Zn, Cu, Mn and Fe content and significant on N(2.59%), P (0.18%), Mg (0.39%) and B (15.45 ppm) content in leaf.
