Abstract: Deep inelastic charged-current reactions have been studied ine+p ande−p collisions at a center of mass energy of about 300GeV in the kinematic regionQ2>200GeV2 andx>0.006 using the ZEUS detector at HERA. The integrated cross sections forQ2>200GeV2 are found to be $\sigma _{e^ + p \to \bar \nu X} = 30.3_{ - 4.2 - 2.6}^{ + 5.5 + 1.6} pb$ and $\sigma _{e^ - p \to \nu X} = 54.7_{ - 9.8 - 3.4}^{ + 15.9 + 2.8} pb$. Differential cross sections have been measured as functions of the variablesx, y andQ2. From the measured differential cross sectionsdσ/dQ2, theW boson mass is determined to be $M_W = 79_{ - 7 - 4}^{ + 8 + 4} GeV$. Measured jet rates and transverse energy profiles agree with model predictions. A search for charged-current interactions with a large rapidity gap yielded one candidate event, corresponding to a cross section of $\sigma _{e^ + p \to \bar \nu X} (Q^2 > 200 GeV^2 ; \eta _{\max }< 2.5) = 0.8_{ - 0.7}^{ + 1.8} \pm 0.1 pb$

Abstract: We report on a measurement of the proton structure function F 2 in the range 3.5×10-5≤x≤4×10-3 and 1.5 GeV2≤Q 2≤15GeV2 at the ep collider HERA operating at a centre-of-mass energy of √s=300GeV. The rise of F 2 with decreasing x observed in the previous HERA measurements persists in this lower x and Q 2 range. The Q 2 evolution of F 2, even at the lowest Q 2 and x measured, is consistent with perturbative QCD. © 1996 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract: We present a measurement and comparison of the [chi][sub [ital c]1] and [chi][sub [ital c]2] production cross sections determined from interactions of 300-GeV/[ital c] [pi][sup [plus minus]] and [ital p] with a Li target. We find [chi][sub [ital c]1]/[chi][sub [ital c]2] production ratios of 0.52[sub [minus]0.27][sup +0.57] and 0.08[sub [minus]0.15][sup +0.25] from reactions induced by [pi][sup [plus minus]] and [ital p], respectively.

Abstract: We have measured the cross section for production of [psi] and [psi][prime] in [ital [bar p]] and [pi][sup [minus]] interactions with Be, Cu, and W targets in experiment E537 at Fermilab. The measurements were performed at 125 GeV/[ital c] using a forward dimuon spectrometer in a closed geometry configuration. The gluon structure functions of the [ital [bar p]] and [pi][sup [minus]] have been extracted from the measured [ital d][sigma]/[ital dx][sub [ital F]] spectra of the produced [psi]'s. From the [ital [bar p]]W data we obtain, for [ital [bar p]], [ital xG]([ital x])=(2.15[plus minus]0.7)[1[minus][ital x]][sup (6.83[plus minus]0.5)] [1+(5.85[plus minus]0.95)[ital x]]. In the [pi][sup [minus]] case, we obtain, from the W and the Be data separately, [ital xG]([ital x])=(1.49[plus minus]0.03)[1[minus][ital x]][sup (1.98[plus minus]0.06)] (for [pi][sup [minus]]W), [ital xG]([ital x])=(1.10[plus minus]0.10)[1[minus][ital x]][sup (1.20[plus minus]0.20)] (for [pi][sup [minus]]Be).

Abstract: Hadroproduction of the {ital J}/{psi} and {psi}{prime} states has been studied in 300-GeV/{ital c} proton, antiproton, and {pi}{sup {plus minus}}Li interactions. Both total and differential cross sections in {ital x}{sub {ital F}} and {ital p}{sub {ital T}} have been measured for the {ital J}/{psi} for the {pi}{sup {plus minus}}, proton, and antiproton interactions. The ratio of {psi}{prime} to {ital J}/{psi} production has been determined for the four types of beam particles.

Abstract: Charged particle production has been measured in Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) events using the ZEUS detector over a large range of $Q^2$ from 10 to $1280 {\rm\ GeV}^2$. The evolution with $Q$ of the charged multiplicity and scaled momentum has been investigated in the current fragmentation region of the Breit frame. Abstract: Inclusive jet differential cross sections for the reaction ep → jet + X at Q2 below 4 GeV2 have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 0.55 pb-1. These cross sections are given in the kinematic region 0.2 < y < 0.85, for jet pseudorapidities in the ep-laboratory range -1 < ηjet < 2 and refer to jets at the hadron level with a cone radius of one unit in the η - φ plane. These results correspond to quasi-real photoproduction at centre-of-mass energies in the range 130-270 GeV and, approximately, for jet pseudorapidities in the interval -3 < ηjet(γρ CMS) < 0. These measurements cover a new kinematic regime of the partonic structure of the photon, at typical scales up to ∼300 GeV2 and photon fractional momenta down to xγ ∼ 10-2. Leading logarithm parton shower Monte Carlo calculations, which include both resolved and direct processes and use the predictions of currently available parametrisations of the photon parton distributions, describe in general the shape and magnitude of the measured ηjet and ETjet distributions.

Abstract: The exclusive production of $\rho^0$ mesons in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering has been studied using the ZEUS detector. Cross sections have been measured in the range $7 < Q^2 < 25$ GeV$^2$ for $\gamma^*p$ centre of mass (c.m.) energies from 40 to 130 GeV. The $\gamma^*p \to \rho^0 p$ cross section exhibits a $Q^{-(4.2 \pm 0.8 ^{+1.4}_{-0.5})}$ dependence and both longitudinally and transversely polarised $\rho^0$'s are observed. The $\gamma^*p \to \rho^0 p$ cross section rises strongly with increasing c.m. energy, when compared with NMC data at lower energy, which cannot be explained by production through soft pomeron exchange. The data are compared with perturbative QCD calculations where the rise in the cross section reflects the increase in the gluon density at low $x$. the gluon density at low $x$., Comment: 22 pages, latex, 4 figures appended

A 2.5[sigma] enhancement in the [ital J]/[psi] [pi][sup 0] spectrum, possibly the recently reported [sup 1][ital P][sub 1] state of charmonium, is observed at a mass of 3.527 GeV/[ital c][sup 2]. In the [ital J]/[psi] plus two pion mass spectrum, we report, together with the expected [psi][prime][r arrow][ital J]/[psi] [pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]], the tentative observation of a structure at a mass of 3.836 GeV/[ital c][sup 2]. No enhancements are seen in the [ital J]/[psi] [pi][sup [plus minus]][pi][sup [plus minus]], [ital J]/[psi] [pi][sup [plus minus]][pi][sup 0], [ital J]/[psi] [pi][sup [plus minus]], or [psi][prime] [pi][sup [plus minus]] mass spectra.

Abstract: Photon proton cross sections for elastic light vector meson production, σel νp, inelastic diffractive production, σnd νp, non-diffractive production, σd νp, as well as the total cross section, σtot νp, have been measured at an average υp center of mass energy of 180 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The resulting values are σel νp = 18 ± 7 μb, σd νp = 33 ± 8 μb, σnd νp = 91 ± 11 μb, and σtot νp 143 ± 17 μb, where the errors include statistical and systematic errors added in quadrature. © 1994 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract: This paper presents our first measurement of the F 2 structure function in neutral-current, deep inelastic scattering using the ZEUS detector at HERA, the ep colliding beam facility at DESY. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 24.7 nb −1 . Results are presented for data in range of Q 2 from 10 GeV 2 to 4700 GeV 2 and Bjorken x down to 3.0 × 10 −4 . The F 2 structure function increases rapidly as x decreases.

Abstract: This paper reports a search for excited electrons at the HERA electron-proton collider. In a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 26 nb−, no evidence was found for any resonant state decaying into e−γ, νW− or e−Z0. Limits on the coupling strength of an excited electron have been determined for masses between 45 and 225 GeV. This study also reports the observation of the wide-angle eγ Compton scattering process.

Abstract: A fine-grain hodoscope to measure the position of showers in the outer (>52 cm) region of the E-705 electromagnetic calorimeter is described. The hodoscope is constructed with two layers of vertical conducting plastic tubes for the X position measurement of showers. Y position measurement of showers was accomplished by cathode-induced horizontal strips. A 50/50-ethane mixture bubbled through isopropyl alcohol at 0 degrees C was circulated through the tubes in parallel. The tubes were operated at +1.925 kV on the wire (below the region of saturated avalanche) in the limited proportionality mode. The hodoscope is described, and results are presented for the position resolution, shower width, and charge detected as a function of calibration electron energy. >

Abstract: A 544-channel low-noise, high-rate precision charge-amplification and ADC (analog/digital converter) system was constructed for the Fermilab Experiment 705 electromagnetic calorimeter, which uses SCG1-C scintillating glass and SF5 lead glass instrumented with photomultiplier tubes. A general discussion of the system is given, and the charge amplification, fast-trigger-pulse generation, and analog/digital conversion aspects of the system are presented in more detail. Performance is evaluated using data from Experiment 705 and from offline tests. Short- and long-term pedestal stability, baseline recovery and rate capability, linearity of response, and crosstalk between channels are discussed. >

Abstract: The design and performance of a 4.2-radiation-length, lead-sandwich, gas tube hodoscope are discussed. The device, measuring 1*2 m/sup 2/ in area and 12 cm in depth, was used in Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory experiment 705. Multiple samplings of anode wires situated within three-walled aluminum tubes were used to generate an X coordinate; similarly, capacitively coupled copper-clad strips were ganged together to yield a Y coordinate. The results reviewed of an analysis of electron calibration data taken during a recent six-month running period are reviewed. The position resolution (in millimeters) is seen to be 0.8+3.3/ square root E+31/E for the 9.92 mm-spaced wires and 0.6+3.2/ square root E+32 for the 12.5-mm strips, where E represents the electron beam energy in GeV. The correlation between energy as measured by the wires and energy as measured by the strips is fairly tight, with an asymmetry RMS (root mean square) for 30-GeV electrons of about 4%. >

Abstract: Three multiwire proportional chambers (MWPCs) with high-rate capability have been constructed for Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory experiment 705 (charmonium and direct photon production by pi /sup +or-/,p and p at 300 GeV/c). Each chamber, with a sensitive area of 308 cm/sup 2/, consists of three anode planes, wound with 12.5- mu m-diameter gold-plated tungsten/rhenium wire, facing 25- mu m graphite-coated kapton cathode planes at a distance of 3 mm. Wire spacing is 0.75 mm in two of the MWPCs and 1.00 mm in the third one. After a few weeks of running on 'magic gas' with a beam flux of up to approximately 10/sup 7/ particles/cm/sup 2/ s, severe damage occurred to the graphite coating. All cathode planes were replaced by aluminized kapton, and the chambers worked successfully for the next three months until the end of the run, when a 10% efficiency drop was observed after a total accumulated charge of approximately 1 C/cm of sense wire. After the end of the run the chambers were disassembled and inspected. A white deposit with a characteristic wire pattern etched away from the Al coating was observed in the region of the beam spot. >

Abstract: A trigger processor for the selection of events in which photons of large transverse momentum are detected by a lead and scintillating glass calorimeter was designed, constructed, and operated at interaction rates ranging from 2 kHz to 2 MHz. The system achieved suppressions of the raw interaction rate of as much as 1*10/sup -5/. Raw distributions of transverse momenta and direct photon event sensitivities are presented for data taken with 300-GeV/c pion and proton beams on a lithium target. >

Abstract: We have studied muon pairs with an invariant mass between 4 and 9 GeV/${c}^{2}$ produced in p\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}N and ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$N interactions at an incident momentum of 125 GeV/c. The experiment was performed at Fermilab using a tungsten target and a special beam enriched to contain 18% antiprotons. We compare differential distributions as functions of the dimuon invariant mass, Feynman x, transverse momentum, and decay angles of the dimuon to the predictions of the Drell-Yan model including QCD corrections. Quark structure functions for the p\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} and ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ are extracted. Comparisons of the antiproton data to the Drell-Yan model are significant because the cross sections depend principally on the valence-quark structure functions which are accurately determined by deep-inelastic scattering measurements. The measured absolute cross section (integrated over positive Feynman x and all transverse momenta) is 0.106\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.005\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.008 nb/nucleon for the p\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}N interaction and 0.107\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.003\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.009 nb/nucleon for the ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$N interaction, where the quoted errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. Normalization (K) factors that are required to bring the naive Drell-Yan and first-order QCD predictions into agreement with the measurements are extracted, and the uncertainties involved in such comparisons are examined.

Abstract: Differential dijet cross sections have been measured with the ZEUS detector for photoproduction events in which the hadronic final state containing the jets is separated with respect to the outgoing proton direction by a large rapidity gap. The cross section has been measured as a function of the fraction of the photon (ϰγOBS) and pomeron (βOBS) momentum participating in the production of the dijet system. The observed ϰγOBS dependence shows evidence for the presence of a resolved- as well as a direct-photon component. The measured cross section da/dβOBS increases as βOBS increases indicating that there is a sizeable contribution to dijet production from those events in which a large fraction of the pomeron momentum participates in the hard scattering. These cross sections and the ZEUS measurements of the diffractive structure function can be described by calculations based on parton densities in the pomeron which evolve according to the QCD evolution equations and include a substantial hard momentum component of gluons in the pomeron.

Abstract: The E705 scintillation glass/lead glass electromagnetic calorimeter is described. The trigger used for recording high transverse momentum direct photon signals from 300 GeV/c π−, π+, $\bar{p} $, p interactions in a Li7 target is explained. Preliminary results on the response of this direct photon trigger and electromagnetic calorimeter and expected event sensitivities are presented.

Abstract: We report the first observation of charmed mesons with the ZEUS detector at HERA using the decay channel ${\rm D}^{*+}\rightarrow (\Do \rightarrow {\rm K}^-\pi^+)\pi^+$ (+ c.c.). Clear signals in the mass difference $\Delta M$=$M$(D$^*$)--$M$(D$^0)$ as well as in the $M(K\pi)$ distribution at the D$^0$ mass are found.
