Abstract

DNA-stabilized silver clusters (Ag:DNAs) have attracted much attention due to their unique sequence-dependent fluorescence and many potential applications; however, the understandings of their atomic structures and functional properties are still limited, which hamper the further development of the novel nanoclusters. Using the advanced computational methods, we propose three atomistic models for the Ag:DNAs, which all contain a four-electron silver core with a two-row planar shape stabilized by the nitrogen atoms in the DNA. By comparing experimental and time-dependent density functional theory-simulated circular dichroism spectra, we have confirmed that these core structures should commonly exist in the Ag:DNAs. We then analyze the electronic and optical properties of the clusters and discover that the silver to DNA transitions have essential contributions to the chiroptical properties of the clusters.

Abstract

International audience; Pt–Ag nanoalloys display an astonishing chemical organization depending on their size and composition. Reversed size-dependent stabilization of ordered nanophases [J. Pirart et al., Nat. Commun., 2019, 10, 1982–1989] has recently been shown around equiconcentration. We extend this study by a theoretical investigation on the whole range of compositions showing a significant composition-dependent chemical ordering in Pt–Ag nanoalloys. At a low silver content, the surface exhibits a strong Ag segregation coupled to a (2 × 1) superstructure on the (100) facets. By increasing the silver concentration, the system displays an L11 ordered phase in the core, interrupted in a narrow range of concentrations by a concentric multishell structure characterized by an alternation of Ag-pure/Pt-pure concentric layers starting from the surface shell to the core. Although the L11 ordered phase has been observed experimentally, the concentric multishell structure is lacking due to the difficulty of the experimental characterization.

Abstract

International audience; The behavior of nanoparticles in solution is largely dominated by their shape and interaction potential. Despite considerable progress in the preparation of patchy and compartmentalized particles, access to nanoparticles with complex surface patterns and topographies remains limited. Here, we show that polyanionic brushes tethered to rod-like cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) spontaneously develop a striped or helical topography through interpolyelectrolyte complexation with polycationic diblock copolymers. Using cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) and tomography (cryo-ET), we follow the complexation process and analyze the delicate 3D topography on the CNC surface. The described approach is facile and modular and can be extended to other block chemistries, nanoparticles, and surfaces, thereby providing a versatile platform toward surface-patterned particles with complex topographies and spatially arranged functional groups.

Abstract

We designed and synthesized high chi-low N-maltoheptaose-(triazolium(+)/N(SO2CF3)(2)(-))-polyisoprene-(triazolium(+)/N-(SO2CF3)(2)(-) -maltoheptaose ABA triblock elastomers featuring triazolium(+)/N(SO2 CF3)(2)(-) (TFSI-) counteranion ionic interfaces separating their constituting polymeric sub-blocks. Spin-coated and solvent-vapor- annealed (SVA) MH1.2k-(T+/TFSI-)-PI4.3k-(T+/TFSI-)-MH1.2k thin films demonstrate interface-induced charge cohesion through ca. 1 nm "thick" ionic nanochannels which facilitate the self-assembly of a perpendicularly aligned lamellar structure. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and (grazing-incidence) small-angle X-ray scattering ((GI)-SAXS) characterizations of MH1.2k-(T+/TFSI-)-PI4.3k-(T+/TFSI-)- MH1.2k and pristine triBCP analogous thin films revealed sub-10 nm block copolymer (BCP) self-assembly and unidirectionally aligned nanostructures developed over several mu m(2) areas. Solvated TFSI- counterions enhance the oligosaccharide sub-block packing during SVA. The overall BCP phase behavior was mapped through SAXS characterizations comparing di- vs triblock polymeric architectures, a middle PI sub-block with two different molecular masses, and TFSI- or I- counteranion effects. This work highlights the benefits of inducing single-point electrostatic interactions within chemical structures of block copolymers to master the long-range self-assembly of prescribed morphologies.

Abstract

International audience; We study three structurally different states of nanocrystalline 316 steel and show that the state, where boundaries containing excess concentration of alloying elements are combined with mobile dislocations in grain interiors, allows maintaining extraordinarily high strength and remarkably enhanced plasticity. Underlying mechanisms featuring interaction between the segregations and mobile dislocations are discussed.

Abstract

We perform direct thermovoltage measurements in a single-electron transistor, using on-chip local thermometers, both in the linear and non-linear regimes. Using a model which accounts for co-tunneling, we find excellent agreement with the experimental data with no free parameters even when the temperature difference is larger than the average temperature (far-from-linear regime). This allows us to confirm the sensitivity of the thermovoltage on co-tunneling and to find that in the non-linear regime the temperature of the metallic island is a crucial parameter. Surprisingly, the metallic island tends to overheat even at zero net charge current, resulting in a reduction of the thermovoltage., 10 pages, 4 figures

The linearized GW density matrix (γGW) is an efficient method to improve the static portion of the self-energy compared to that of ordinary perturbative GW while keeping the single-shot simplicity of the calculation. Previous work has shown that γGW gives an improved Fock operator and total energy components that approach the self-consistent GW quality. Here, we test γGW for dimer dissociation for the first time by studying N2, LiH, and Be2. We also calculate a set of self-consistent GW results in identical basis sets for a direct and consistent comparison. γGW approaches self-consistent GW total energies for a starting point based on a high amount of exact exchange. We also compare the accuracy of different total energy functionals, which differ when evaluated with a non-self-consistent density or density matrix. While the errors in total energies among different functionals and starting points are small, the individual energy components show noticeable errors when compared to reference data. The energy component errors of γGW are smaller than functionals of the density and we suggest that the linearized GW density matrix is a route to improving total energy evaluations in the adiabatic connection framework.

Abstract

International audience; There are currently no experimental techniques that combine atomic-resolution imaging with elemental sensitivity and chemical finger-printing on single molecules. The advent of using molecular-modified tips in noncontact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM) has made it possible to image (planar) molecules with atomic resolution. However, the mechanisms responsible for elemental contrast with passivated tips are not fully understood. Here, we investigate elemental contrast by carrying out both nc-AFM and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) experiments on epitaxial monolayer hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) on Ir(111). The hBN overlayer is inert, and the in-plane bonds connecting nearest-neighbor boron and nitrogen atoms possess strong covalent character and a bond length of only ∼1.45 Å. Nevertheless, constant-height maps of both the frequency shift Δf and the local contact potential difference exhibit striking sublattice asymmetry. We match the different atomic sites with the observed contrast by comparison with nc-AFM image simulations based on the density functional theory optimized hBN/Ir(111) geometry, which yields detailed information on the origin of the atomic-scale contrast.

Abstract

International audience; In order to controllably grow single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), a better understanding of the growth processes and how they are influenced by external parameters such as catalyst and gaseous environment is required. Here, we present direct evidence of growth termination of individual SWCNTs and successive growth of additional SWCNTs on Co catalyst particles supported on MgO by means of environmental transmission electron microscopy. Such in situ observations reveal the plethora of solid carbon formations at the local scale while it is happening and thereby elucidate the multitude of configurations resulting from identical external synthesis conditions, which should be considered in the quest for controlled SWCNT growth. Using CO and a mixture of CO and H2 as carbon sources, we show that the growth of SWCNTs terminates with a reduced tube−catalyst adhesion strength. Two main reasons for the cessation are proposed: insufficient active carbon species and a certain amount of stress exerted at the tube−catalyst interface. Interestingly, it was observed that catalyst particles stayed active in terms of nucleating additional solid carbon structures after growth termination of the first SWCNT. These observations elucidate the importance of an in-depth understanding of the role of catalysts and carbon sources in the continued growth of SWCNTs. Furthermore, it serves as a guide for further control of carbon nanostructure synthesis via catalyst engineering and synthesis optimization.

Abstract

This article has an erratum: DOI 10.1016/j.carbon.2017.03.065 We examine swift heavy ion-induced defect production in suspended single layer graphene using Raman spectroscopy and a two temperature molecular dynamics model that couples the ionic and electronic subsystems. We show that an increase in the electronic stopping power of the ion results in an increase in the size of the pore-type defects, with a defect formation threshold at 1.22–1.48 keV/layer. We also report calculations of the specific electronic heat capacity of graphene with different chemical potentials and discuss the electronic thermal conductivity of graphene at high electronic temperatures, suggesting a value in the range of 1 Wm−1 K−1. These results indicate that swift heavy ions can create nanopores in graphene, and that their size can be tuned between 1 and 4 nm diameter by choosing a suitable stopping power.

Abstract

There is enormous recent interest in weak, van der Waals-type (vdW) interactions due to their fundamental relevance for two-dimensional materials and the so-called vdW heterostructures. Tackling this problem using computer simulation is very challenging due to the non-trivial, non-local nature of these interactions. We benchmark different treatments of London dispersion forces within the density functional theory (DFT) framework on hexagonal boron nitride or graphene monolayers on Ir(111) by comparing the calculated geometries to a comprehensive set of experimental data. The geometry of these systems crucially depends on the interplay between vdW interactions and wave function hybridisation, making them excellent test cases for vdW-treated DFT. Our results show strong variations in the calculated atomic geometry. While some of the approximations reproduce the experimental structure, this is rather based on \textit{a posteriori} comparison with the ``target results''. Abstract

International audience; Low-Pt based nanocrystals demonstrate potential as highly active catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), but they suffer from undesirable structural degradation. Therefore, it is highly challenging to optimize their surface and interfacial structures to tune their catalytic properties for both activity and stability. Here core–shell Cu/FePtCu nanoparticles with a face-centered-tetragonal phase are prepared by a facile one–pot polyol method at 320 °C. The optimized core–shell Fe45Pt35Cu20 catalyst with Pt-enriched surface exhibits 0.5 A/mgPt mass activity, which is a factor of 4 better than that of commercial Pt/C (0.13 A/mgPt). In addition, the current density of the catalyst drops only 3.0% after 1000 cycles, which is much better than Pt/C (34.2% decay). Using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and atomically resolved elemental mapping, the morphology and structure evolving between the FePtCu alloy and core–shell Cu/FePtCu could clearly be explained. This work demonstrates that an ordered and core–shell FePtCu catalyst is highly promising for ORR and other electrochemical processes.

Abstract

International audience; Catalyst selection is very crucial for controlled growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). Here we introduce a well-designed Fesingle bondTisingle bondO solid solution for SWNT growth with a high preference to large chiral angles. The Fesingle bondTisingle bondO catalyst was prepared by combining Ti layer deposition onto premade Fe nanoparticles with subsequent high-temperature air calcination, which favours the formation of a homogeneous Fesingle bondTisingle bondO solid solution. Using CO as the carbon feedstock, chemical vapour deposition growth of SWNTs at 800 °C was demonstrated on the Fesingle bondTisingle bondO catalyst. Nanobeam electron diffraction characterization on a number of individual SWNTs revealed that more than 94% of SWNTs have chiral angles larger than 15°. In situ environmental transmission electron microscopy study was carried out to reveal the catalyst dynamics upon reduction. Our results identify that the phase segregation through reducing Fesingle bondTisingle bondO catalyst leads to the formation of TiOx-supported small Fe nanoparticles for SWNT growth. The strong metal-support interactions induced by partial reduction of TiOx support promote the wettability of Fe nanoparticle, accounting for the preferential growth of large-chiral-angle SWNTs. This work opens a new avenue for chiral angle selective growth of SWNTs.

Abstract

Probing the structural changes that electrode materials undergo during electrochemical cycling while monitoring their spatial distribution within the volume gives valuable insights on dynamic processes, i.e. side reactions and evolution of phase migration barriers, often associated to capacity and power limitation. In this work, we present an electrochemical cell to perform spatial and time resolved operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction on Lithium (Li) metal polymer batteries operating at 80 °C. A 3.2 mm diameter battery made of a Li metal anode, a LiFePO4 based cathode, and a solid polymer electrolyte acting as separator, is placed inside a glass-based casing and cycled at a beamline. The cylindrical cell geometry with its small size enables to follow the phase transformations occurring at different states of charge and at different cathode heights. It is possible to create spatially resolved phase distribution plots and to differentiate active material structural changes occurring close to the interface with the electrolyte from those at the current collector vicinity. The results provide a direct observation of the Li diffusion in the LiFePO4 and FePO4 phase distribution. In addition, synchrotron X-ray diffraction computed tomography (XRD-CT) measurements were performed to obtain phase distribution maps at different heights of the battery assembly.

Abstract

Chemical vapor deposition synthesis of single-walled carbon nanotubes experiments, using Fe catalyst, and alternating methane and carbon monoxide as carbon feedstocks, lead to the reversible formation of junctions between tubes of different diameters. Combined with an atomistic modeling of the tube / catalyst interface, this shows that the ratio of diameters of the tube and its seeding particle, denoting the growth mode, depends on the carbon fraction inside the catalyst. With carbon monoxide, nanoparticles are strongly carbon enriched, and tend to dewet the tube, in a perpendicular growth mode. Abstract

Understanding the mechanisms of damage formation in materials irradiated with energetic ions is essential for the field of ion-beam materials modification and engineering. Utilizing incident ions, electrons, photons, and positrons, various analysis techniques, including Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), electron RBS, Raman spectroscopy, high-resolution X-ray diffraction, small-angle X-ray scattering, and positron annihilation spectroscopy, are routinely used or gaining increasing attention in characterizing ion beam modified materials. The distinctive information, recent developments, and some perspectives in these techniques are reviewed. Applications of these techniques are discussed to demonstrate their unique ability for studying ion-solid interactions and the corresponding radiation effects in modified depths ranging from a few nm to a few tens of μm, and to provide information on electronic and atomic structure of the materials, defect configuration and concentration, as well as phase stability, amorphization and recrystallization processes. Integrating the plasma core performance with an edge and scrape-off layer (SOL) that leads to tolerable heat and particle loads on the wall is a major challenge. The new European medium size tokamak task force (EU-MST) coordinates research on ASDEX Upgrade (AUG), MAST and TCV. This multi-machine approach within EU-MST, covering a wide parameter range, is instrumental to progress in the field, as ITER and DEMO core/pedestal and SOL parameters are not achievable simultaneously in present day devices. A two prong approach is adopted. On the one hand, scenarios with tolerable transient heat and particle loads, including active edge localised mode (ELM) control are developed. On the other hand, divertor solutions including advanced magnetic configurations are studied. Considerable progress has been made on both approaches, in particular in the fields of: ELM control with resonant magnetic perturbations (RMP), small ELM regimes, detachment onset and control, as well as filamentary scrape-off-layer transport. For example full ELM suppression has now been achieved on AUG at low collisionality with n = 2 RMP maintaining good confinement HH(98,y2)≈0.95. Advances have been made with respect to detachment onset and control. Studies in advanced divertor configurations (Snowflake, Super-X and X-point target divertor) shed new light on SOL physics. Cross field filamentary transport has been characterised in a wide parameter regime on AUG, MAST and TCV progressing the theoretical and experimental understanding crucial for predicting first wall loads in ITER and DEMO. Conditions in the SOL also play a crucial role for ELM stability and access to small ELM regimes. Abstract

International audience; The size dependence of the phase diagram of nanoalloys with a tendency to phase separate is investigated. As the critical temperature may depend on both the size and the morphology of the nanoparticles, we consider nanowires with different cross-sections and also nanotubes with different circumferences. The variation of the critical temperature with the length of all these nanoparticles is systematically studied using Monte Carlo simulations based on an Ising model. A non-monotonic variation of the critical temperature is observed as a function of the length. The maximal value of the critical temperature is reached when the length and the circumference of the nanoparticles are similar. The phase diagrams obtained within two thermodynamic ensembles (the canonical ensemble and the pseudo grand canonical ensemble) are compared and discussed in terms of the behaviour of a single particle or an assembly of nanoparticles in mutual equilibrium with each other.

Abstract

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is a prominent member in the growing family of two-dimensional materials with potential applications ranging from being an atomically smooth support for other 2D materials to templating growth of molecular layers. We have studied the structure of monolayer h-BN grown by chemical vapour deposition on Ir(111) by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) experiments and state-of-the-art density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The lattice-mismatch between the h-BN and Ir(111) surface results in the formation of a moir\'e superstructure with a periodicity of $\sim$29 \AA\ and a corrugation of $\sim$0.4 \AA. By measuring the field emission resonances above the h-BN layer, we find a modulation of the work function within the moir\'e unit cell of $\sim$0.5 eV. DFT simulations for a 13-on-12 h-BN/Ir(111) unit cell confirm our experimental findings and allow us to relate the change in the work function to the subtle changes in the interaction between boron and nitrogen atoms and the underlying substrate atoms within the moir\'e unit cell. Hexagonal boron nitride on Ir(111) combines weak topographic corrugation with a strong work function modulation over the moir\'e unit cell. This makes h-BN/Ir(111) a potential substrate for electronically modulated thin film and hetero-sandwich structures., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

International audience; X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is a widely used tool for studying the chemical composition of materials and it is a standard technique in surface science and technology. XPS is particularly useful for characterizing nanostructures such as carbon nanomaterials due to their reduced dimensionality. In order to assign the measured binding energies to specific bonding environments, reference energy values need to be known. Experimental measurements of the core level signals of the elements present in novel materials such as graphene have often been compared to values measured for molecules, or calculated for finite clusters. Here we have calculated core level binding energies for variously functionalized or defected graphene by delta Kohn-Sham total energy differences in the real-space grid-based projector-augmented wave density functional theory code (GPAW). To accurately model extended systems, we applied periodic boundary conditions in large unit cells to avoid computational artifacts. In select cases, we compared the results to all-electron calculations using an ab initio molecular simulations (FHI-aims) code. We calculated the carbon and oxygen 1s core level binding energies for oxygen and hydrogen functionalities such as graphane-like hydrogenation, and epoxide, hydroxide and carboxylic functional groups. In all cases, we considered binding energy contributions arising from carbon atoms up to the third nearest neighbor from the functional group, and plotted C 1s line shapes by using experimentally realistic broadenings. Furthermore, we simulated the simplest atomic defects, namely single and double vacancies and the Stone-Thrower-Wales defect. Finally, we studied modifications of a reactive single vacancy with O and H functionalities, and compared the calculated values to data found in the literature.

Abstract

International audience; We demonstrate that an extraction enhancement by a factor of 2.8 can be obtained for a GaN quantum well structure using metallic nanostructures, compared to a flat semiconductor. The InGaN/GaN quantum well is inserted into a dielectric waveguide, naturally formed in the structure, and a silver grating is deposited on the surface and covered with a polymer film. The polymer layer greatly improves the extraction compared to a single metallic grating. The comparison of the experiments with simulations gives strong indications on the key role of weakly guided modes in the polymer layer diffracted by the grating.

International audience; For more than a century, physicists have searched for a unique and general form for the force density that an electromagnetic field imposes on a medium. The existing equations for this quantity, obtained, e.g., by Minkowski, Einstein and Laub, Abraham, and Helmholtz, are manifestly different and, as such, give different predictions in some particular physical situations. The cases of real media with dispersion, dissipation, and nonlinearities as well as materials with optical gain have not been much addressed. Here we present an unambiguous general equation for the force density expressed in terms of a new energy-momentum tensor of the field. The equation can be applied to almost any natural or designed material. We show how the results obtained by Minkowski, Helmholtz, Einstein and Laub, and Abraham appear as special cases of this general treatment. Surprisingly, our result turns out to be physically very close to the almost forgotten result of Einstein and Laub. International audience; We derive an expression for the macroscopic force density that a narrowband electromagnetic field imposes on a dissipative isotropic medium. The result is obtained by averaging the microscopic form for Lorentz force density. The derived expression allows us to calculate realistic electromagnetic forces in a wide range of materials that are described by complex-valued electric permittivity and magnetic permeability. The three-dimensional energy-momentum tensor in our expression reduces for lossless media to the so-called Helmholtz tensor that has not been contradicted in any experiment so far. The momentum density of the field does not coincide with any well-known expression, but for non-magnetic materials it matches the Abraham expression. Electromagnetic force density in dissipative isotropic media 2 After the first well-known theoretical model for static electromagnetic forces in ponderable media, introduced by H. von Helmholtz [ 1 ], several other descriptions have been proposed to account for the action of both static and oscillating electromagnetic fields on a medium. The two most famous of them were proposed by H. Minkowski [ 2 ] and M. Abraham [ 3 ]. Their models give different predictions for the value of the force density in certain particular cases, which has created a century-long scientific debate on the topic [ 4]-[15 ]. It is well known that both these models ignore the existing electroand magnetostrictive forces [ 7, 16 ]. A model by Einstein and Laub [ 17 ] was intended to include these forces, but it turned out to be in disagreement with experiments (see, e.g., Ref. [ 7 ] and references therein). A reliable way to also include electro- and magnetostrictive forces can be based on the so-called Helmholtz energy-momentum tensor. Previously we have shown that the Helmholtz tensor can be derived in a relatively simple way starting with the microscopic field-matter interaction picture [ 18 ]. However, this tensor and the other models discussed so far are not applicable to dissipative media and, therefore, they do not allow calculating electromagnetic forces in many realistic materials. The aim of this work is to derive a general expression for the macroscopic force density imposed on a dissipative and electrically conducting inhomogeneous isotropic medium by a narrow-band electromagnetic field. We do this by spatially averaging the microscopic Lorentz force density (that assumes a unique and commonly accepted form, in contrast to the macroscopic electromagnetic force, energy, and momentum densities). The result is written in terms of the three-dimensional electromagnetic energy-momentum tensor and the momentum density of the field, which explicitly depend on the complex relative permittivity and permeability of the material. In the limit of lossless medium, the obtained energy-momentum tensor becomes the Helmholtz tensor. We note that the force density expressed in terms of complex-valued quantities has been introduced previously (see, e.g., [ 19 ] and [ 20]), but not in connection with the Helmholtz tensor. The expression obtained by us for the field momentum density does not coincide with any of the well-known expressions, but for lossless dielectrics it converges to an expression obtained by us previously [ 18 ], and if the material is not magnetic, it matches the Abraham expression. The derivation of the force density in dissipative media is similar to that introduced by us in Ref. [ 18 ] for lossless materials. 35. Adsorption of polyelectrolytes in the presence of varying dielectric discontinuity between solution and substrate.

Abstract

We examine the interactions between polyelectrolytes (PEs) and uncharged substrates under conditions corresponding to a dielectric discontinuity between the aqueous solution and the substrate. To this end, we vary the relevant system characteristics, in particular the substrate dielectric constant ɛs under different salt conditions. We employ coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations with rodlike PEs in salt solutions with explicit ions and implicit water solvent with dielectric constant ɛw = 80. As expected, at low salt concentrations, PEs are repelled from the substrates with ɛs < ɛw but are attracted to substrates with a high dielectric constant due to image charges. This attraction considerably weakens for high salt and multivalent counterions due to enhanced screening. Furthermore, for monovalent salt, screening enhances adsorption for weakly charged PEs, but weakens it for strongly charged ones. Meanwhile, multivalent counterions have little effect on weakly charged PEs, but prevent adsorption of highly charged PEs, even at low salt concentrations. We also find that correlation-induced charge inversion of a PE is enhanced close to the low dielectric constant substrates, but suppressed when the dielectric constant is high. To explore the possibility of a PE monolayer formation, we examine the interaction of a pair of like-charged PEs aligned parallel to a high dielectric constant substrate with ɛs = 8000. Our main conclusion is that monolayer formation is possible only for weakly charged PEs at high salt concentrations of both monovalent and multivalent counterions. Finally, we also consider the energetics of a PE approaching the substrate perpendicular to it, in analogy to polymer translocation. Our results highlight the complex interplay between electrostatic and steric interactions and contribute to a deeper understanding of PE-substrate interactions and adsorption at substrate interfaces with varying dielectric discontinuities from solution, ubiquitous in biointerfaces, PE coating applications, and designing adsorption setups., (© 2024 Author(s). 36. Revisiting the Thickness of the Air-Water Interface from Two Extremes of Interface Hydrogen Bond Dynamics.

Abstract

The air-water interface plays a crucial role in many aspects of science because of its unique properties, such as a two-dimensional hydrogen bond (HB) network and completely different HB dynamics compared to bulk water. However, accurately determining the boundary of interfacial and bulk water, that is, the thickness of the air-water interface, still challenges experimentalists. Various simulation-based methods have been developed to estimate the thickness, converging on a range of approximately 3-10 (Å). In this study, we introduce a novel approach, grounded in density functional theory-based molecular dynamics and deep potential molecular dynamics simulations, to measure the air-water interface thickness, offering a different perspective based on prior research. To capture realistic HB dynamics in the air-water interface, two extreme scenarios of the interface HB dynamics are obtained: one underestimates the interface HB dynamics, while the other overestimates it. Surprisingly, our results suggest that the interface HB dynamics in both scenarios converges as the thickness of the air-water interface increases to 4 (Å). This convergence point, indicative of the realistic interface thickness, is also validated by our calculation of anisotropic decay of OH stretch and the free OH dynamics at the air-water interface.

38. Droplet Friction on Superhydrophobic Surfaces Scales With Liquid-Solid Contact Fraction.

Abstract

It is generally assumed that contact angle hysteresis of superhydrophobic surfaces scales with liquid-solid contact fraction, however, its experimental verification has been problematic due to the limited accuracy of contact angle and sliding angle goniometry. Advances in cantilever-based friction probes enable accurate droplet friction measurements down to the nanonewton regime, thus suiting much better for characterizing the wetting of superhydrophobic surfaces than contact angle hysteresis measurements. This work quantifies the relationship between droplet friction and liquid-solid contact fraction, through theory and experimental validation. Well-defined micropillar and microcone structures are used as model surfaces to provide a wide range of different liquid-solid contact fractions. Micropillars are known to be able to hold the water on top of them, and a theoretical analysis together with confocal laser scanning microscopy shows that despite the spiky nature of the microcones droplets do not sink into the conical structure either, rendering a diminishingly small liquid-solid contact fraction. Droplet friction characterization with a micropipette force sensor technique reveals a strong dependence of the droplet friction on the contact fraction, and the dependency is described with a simple physical equation, despite the nearly three-orders-of-magnitude difference in liquid-solid contact fraction between the sparsest cone surface and the densest pillar surface., (© 2024 The Author(s). 39. Guided Heterostructure Growth of CoFe LDH on Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene for Durably High Oxygen Evolution Activity.

Abstract

Heterostructures of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and MXenes have shown great promise for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts, owing to their complementary physical properties. Coupling LDHs with MXenes can potentially enhance their conductivity, stability, and OER activity. In this work, a scalable and straightforward in situ guided growth of CoFeLDH on Ti 3 C 2 T x is introduced, where the surface chemistry of Ti 3 C 2 T x dominates the resulting heterostructures, allowing tunable crystal domain sizes of LDHs. Combined simulation results of Monte Carlo and density functional theory (DFT) validate this guided growth mechanism. Through this way, the optimized heterostructures allow the highest OER activity of the overpotential = 301 mV and Tafel slope = 43 mV dec -1 at 10 mA cm -2 , and a considerably durable stability of 0.1% decay over 200 h use, remarkably outperforming all reported LDHs-MXenes materials. DFT calculations indicate that the charge transfer in heterostructures can decrease the rate-limiting energy barrier for OER, facilitating OER activity. The combined experimental and theoretical efforts identify the participation role of MXene in heterostructures for OER reactions, providing insights into designing advanced heterostructures for robust OER electrocatalysis., (© 2024 The Author(s). 40. High-Speed Three-Dimensional Scanning Force Microscopy Visualization of Subnanoscale Hydration Structures on Dissolving Calcite Step Edges.

Abstract

Hydration at solid-liquid interfaces plays an essential role in a wide range of phenomena in biology and in materials and Earth sciences. However, the atomic-scale dynamics of hydration have remained elusive because of difficulties associated with their direct visualization. In this work, a high-speed three-dimensional (3D) scanning force microscopy technique that produces 3D images of solid-liquid interfaces with subnanoscale resolution at a rate of 1.6 s per 3D image was developed. Using this technique, direct 3D images of moving step edges were acquired during calcite dissolution in water, and hydration structures on transition regions were visualized. A Ca(OH) 2 monolayer was found to form along the step edge as an intermediate state during dissolution. This imaging process also showed that hydration layers extended from the upper terraces to the transition regions to stabilize adsorbed Ca(OH) 2 . This technique provides information that cannot be obtained via conventional 1D/2D measurement methods.

Neuromorphic computing, a paradigm rooted in nanoionic devices that emulate the operations and architecture of the human brain, has emerged as a powerful tool for highly efficient information processing. This paper delivers a comprehensive review of recent developments in nanoionic device-based neuromorphic computing technologies and their pivotal role in shaping the next-generation of HMI. Through a detailed examination of fundamental mechanisms and behaviors, the paper explores the ability of nanoionic memristors and ion-gated transistors to emulate the intricate functions of neurons and synapses. Crucial performance metrics, such as reliability, energy efficiency, flexibility, and biocompatibility, are rigorously evaluated. 42. Construction of topological quantum magnets from atomic spins on surfaces.

Abstract

Artificial quantum systems have emerged as platforms to realize topological matter in a well-controlled manner. So far, experiments have mostly explored non-interacting topological states, and the realization of many-body topological phases in solid-state platforms with atomic resolution has remained challenging. Here we construct topological quantum Heisenberg spin lattices by assembling spin chains and two-dimensional spin arrays from spin-1/2 Ti atoms on an insulating MgO film in a scanning tunnelling microscope. We engineer both topological and trivial phases of the quantum spin model and thereby realize first- and second-order topological quantum magnets. We probe the many-body excitations of the quantum magnets by single-atom electron spin resonance with an energy resolution better than 100 neV. Making use of the atomically localized magnetic field of the scanning tunnelling microscope tip, we visualize various many-body topological bound modes including topological edge states, topological defects and higher-order corner modes. 43. Ground-state cooling of a mechanical oscillator by a noisy environment.

Abstract

Dissipation and the accompanying fluctuations are often seen as detrimental for quantum systems since they are associated with fast relaxation and loss of phase coherence. However, it has been proposed that a pure state can be prepared if external noise induces suitable downwards transitions, while exciting transitions are blocked. We demonstrate such a refrigeration mechanism in a cavity optomechanical system, where we prepare a mechanical oscillator in its ground state by injecting strong electromagnetic noise at frequencies around the red mechanical sideband of the cavity. The optimum cooling is reached with a noise bandwidth smaller than but on the order of the cavity decay rate. At higher bandwidths, cooling is less efficient as suitable transitions are not effectively activated. In the opposite regime where the noise bandwidth becomes comparable to the mechanical damping rate, damping follows the noise amplitude adiabatically, and the cooling is also suppressed., (© 2024. 44. Estimating Molecular Thermal Averages with the Quantum Equation of Motion and Informationally Complete Measurements.

Abstract

By leveraging the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE), the "quantum equation of motion" (qEOM) method established itself as a promising tool for quantum chemistry on near-term quantum computers and has been used extensively to estimate molecular excited states. Here, we explore a novel application of this method, employing it to compute thermal averages of quantum systems, specifically molecules like ethylene and butadiene. A drawback of qEOM is that it requires measuring the expectation values of a large number of observables on the ground state of the system, and the number of necessary measurements can become a bottleneck of the method. In this work, we focus on measurements through informationally complete positive operator-valued measures (IC-POVMs) to achieve a reduction in the measurement overheads by estimating different observables of interest through the measurement of a single set of POVMs. We show with numerical simulations that the qEOM combined with IC-POVM measurements ensures satisfactory accuracy in the reconstruction of the thermal state with a reasonable number of shots.

45. Tunable Assembly of Photocatalytic Colloidal Coatings for Antibacterial Applications.

Abstract

In this study, evaporation-induced size segregation and interparticle interactions are harnessed to tune the microstructure of photocatalytic colloidal coatings containing TiO 2 nanoparticles and polymer particles. This enabled the fabrication of a library of five distinct microstructures: TiO 2 -on-top stratification, a thin top layer of polymer or TiO 2 , homogeneous films of raspberry particles, and a sandwich structure. The photocatalytic and antibacterial activities of the coatings were evaluated by testing the viability of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteria using the ISO-27447 protocol, showing a strong correlation with the microstructure. UVA irradiation for 4 h induces a reduction in MRSA viability in all coating systems, ranging from 0.6 to 1.1 log. Films with TiO 2 -enriched top surfaces exhibit better resistance to prolonged exposure to disinfection and bacterial testing. The remaining systems, nonetheless, present higher antibacterial activity because of a larger number of pores and coating defects that enhance light and water accessibility for the generation and transport of reactive oxygen species. 46. Bolometric detection of Josephson radiation.

Abstract

One of the most promising approaches towards large-scale quantum computation uses devices based on many Josephson junctions. Yet, even today, open questions regarding the single junction remain unsolved, such as the detailed understanding of the quantum phase transitions, the coupling of the Josephson junction to the environment or how to improve the coherence of a superconducting qubit. Here we design and build an engineered on-chip reservoir connected to a Josephson junction that acts as an efficient bolometer for detecting the Josephson radiation under non-equilibrium, that is, biased conditions. The bolometer converts the a.c. Josephson current at microwave frequencies up to about 100 GHz into a temperature rise measured by d.c. thermometry. A circuit model based on realistic parameter values captures both the current-voltage characteristics and the measured power quantitatively. The present experiment demonstrates an efficient, wide-band, thermal detection scheme of microwave photons and provides a sensitive detector of Josephson dynamics beyond the standard conductance measurements., (© 2024. 47. Water adsorption lifts the (2 × 1) reconstruction of calcite(104).

Abstract

The adsorption of water on calcite(104) is investigated in ultra-high vacuum by density functional theory (DFT) and non-contact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM) in the coverage regime of up to one monolayer (ML). DFT calculations reveal a clear preference for water to adsorb on the bulk-like carbonate group rows of the (2 × 1) reconstructed surface. Additionally, an apparent water attraction due to carbonate group reorientation suggest island formation for water adsorbed on the reconstructed carbonate group rows. Experimentally, water is found to exclusively occupy specific positions within the (2 × 1) unit cell up to 0.5 ML, to form islands at coverage between 0.5 and 1 ML, and to express a (1 × 1) structure at coverage of a full monolayer.

48. Self-Stacked 1T-1H Layers in 6R-NbSeTe and the Emergence of Charge and Magnetic Correlations Due to Ligand Disorder.

Abstract

The emergence of correlated phenomena arising from the combination of 1T and 1H van der Waals layers is the focus of intense research. Here, we synthesize a self-stacked 6R phase in NbSeTe, showing perfect alternating 1T and 1H layers that grow coherently along the c-direction, as revealed by scanning transmission electron microscopy. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy shows a mixed contribution of the trigonal and octahedral Nb bands to the Fermi level. Diffuse scattering reveals temperature-independent short-range charge fluctuations with propagation vector q CO = (0.25 0), derived from the condensation of a longitudinal mode in the 1T layer, while the long-range charge density wave is quenched by ligand disorder. Magnetization measurements suggest the presence of an inhomogeneous, short-range magnetic order, further supported by the absence of a clear phase transition in the specific heat. These experimental analyses in combination with ab initio calculations indicate that the ground state of 6R-NbSeTe is described by a statistical distribution of short-range charge-modulated and spin-correlated regions driven by ligand disorder. Our results demonstrate how natural 1T-1H self-stacked bulk heterostructures can be used to engineer emergent phases of matter.

49. Quantum thermodynamics with a single superconducting vortex.

Abstract

We demonstrate complete control over dynamics of a single superconducting vortex in a nanostructure, which we coin the Single Vortex Box. Our device allows us to trap the vortex in a field-cooled aluminum nanosquare and expel it on demand with a nanosecond pulse of electrical current. Using the time-resolving nanothermometry we measure [Formula: see text] joules as the amount of the dissipated heat in the elementary process of the single-vortex expulsion. Our experiment enlightens the thermodynamics of the absorption process in the superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors, in which vortices are perceived to be essential for a formation of a detectable hotspot. The demonstrated opportunity to manipulate a single superconducting vortex reliably in a confined geometry comprises a proof of concept of a nanoscale nonvolatile memory cell with subnanosecond write and read operations, which offers compatibility with quantum processors based either on superconducting qubits or on rapid single-flux quantum circuits.
