Purpose: To investigate the predictive ability of individual Caries Risk Assessments (CRA) regarding oral factors supplemented with social factors in relation to caries outcome in preschool children. Furthermore, to assess various models of CRA with oral and social factors included, aiming to identify the most suitable models for different age groups. Methods: The design is a retrospective registry-based cohort study. Children visiting the dentists at ages 3 and 6 years were included. Data on oral and social factors were obtained from dental records, the Swedish Quality register for caries and periodontitis (SKaPa), and Statistics Sweden (SCB). Various models of CRA were designed, combining oral and social factors. Models were analyzed with univariable associations using simple logistic regression, and the results were presented as odds ratios (ORs). In addition, models were analyzed with area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC). Pairwise comparisons were conducted by DeLong's test, with p < 0.05 considered significant. Result: Oral factors were the most significant for caries outcome (OR 9.6), followed by social factors: foreign background (OR 4.6), low income (OR 2.83), low education of the mother (OR 2.77), single-parent family (OR 2.11), and having ≥ 3 siblings (OR 1.71), (p < 0.01). The predictive ability of CRA improved when models combining oral and social factors were used, compaired to CRA based solely on oral factors (p < 0.05). An increase of up to 15% was seen when CRA was conducted closer to the outcome. Conclusion: Models for Caries Risk Assessment including oral and social factors increase the predictive ability. Purpose: To evaluate the outcome of apexification using bioceramics in immature permanent teeth, and to study the factors influencing treatment outcome and frequency of spontaneous cervical root fractures. Methods: Forty-six children with 51 non-vital permanent incisors treated with a bioceramic apical plug were included. Mean age at pulp necrosis was 9.8 (SD 2.2) years and mean follow-up time was 3.3 (SD 2.4) years. Data were extracted from dental records and included stage of root development, presence of external root resorptions, clinical signs of infection, size of periapical lesion, type and placement of bioceramic plug, and spontaneous root fracture. Treatment outcome was assessed using periapical index (PAI-score) and presence of clinical symptoms. The statistical analyses were conducted using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, version 28 (IBM Corp., Armonk, N.Y., USA). Data were cross-tabulated and tested with chi-square statistic. Results: Biodentine™ was used as apical plug in 78.4% of the teeth and MTA in 21.6%. Complete healing or signs of healing was reported in 86.3% of the teeth, whilst seven teeth (13.7%) were non-healed. All non-healed teeth had preoperative clinical signs of infection. No difference was found in stage of root development, presence of root resorption, and type and placement of bioceramic plug in healed and non-healed teeth (p > 0.05). Five teeth (9.8%) exhibited root fracture 1–6 years after treatment and all had very immature root development. Type of bioceramic or external root resorption was not associated with spontaneous root fracture. Conclusion: Apexification using bioceramics showed favourable prognosis in immature permanent teeth. Aim: To investigate what happens to cross‐sectionally identified root‐filled teeth over a 6‐year period, regardless of the time that elapsed since primary root canal treatment, in a cohort of adult patients regularly attending a Public Dental Service. A secondary aim was to investigate how the cumulative events affecting root‐filled teeth over the same time were associated with variables obtained from a baseline examination. Methodology: Adult patients with ≥1 previously root‐filled tooth and regularly attending the Public Dental Service in Örebro County were enrolled for study participation in 2015. General dental practitioners examined all identified root‐filled teeth in this cohort at baseline using a standardized protocol and were also responsible for further decision‐making and treatments. After six years, information on events of the root‐filled teeth was collected from dental records. The highest rating (most invasive treatment) on a 5‐point ordinal scale was used in the analyses. Regression analyses with stepwise selection were performed for associations between patient‐ and tooth‐related factors and events. Results: A total of 445 patients with 1007 root‐filled teeth were followed the entire observation time. Twenty (2.0%) of the root‐filled teeth had endodontic retreatment and 150 (14.9%) were extracted over six years. Among teeth with periapical radiolucency or pain, the majority did not undergo retreatment or extraction; however, the multivariate analysis demonstrated that retreatment or extraction was associated with baseline recordings of teeth with periapical radiolucency (p <.0001), tenderness to percussion (p <.0001), and poor coronal restoration (p <.0001). Conclusions: This study corroborates the notion that in general dentistry, root‐filled teeth with radiological signs of apical disease often remain untreated over time. Furthermore, it also reveals that root‐filled teeth presenting with mild pain do not necessarily receive any intervention. However, teeth with baseline signs of apical periodontitis, pain, or inadequate coronal restoration were more likely to have received intervention during the six‐year period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dental caries, gingivitis, and excess weight are highly prevalent, interconnected chronic conditions. The association of oral health with the development of adiposity among children is sparsely addressed. We examined the association of oral health to the development of excess weight and central obesity in early adolescence during a 2-year follow-up period. This prospective study was conducted with 2702 children aged 9–12 years at baseline from the Finnish Health in Teens study. Their weight development was followed up for 2 years. Body mass index with age- and sex-specific cut-offs and the waist–height ratio indicated weight status and central obesity. Oral health data (caries experience and gingivitis/calculus) were collected from outpatient records of public dental services. Having both caries experience and gingivitis/calculus was considered burden of oral diseases. Of the sample, 74% were caries-free but 70% exhibited gingivitis and/or calculus, and 20% had both caries experience and gingivitis/calculus. During the follow-up period, 5.3% (n = 124) and 4.7% (n = 118) of the children became overweight/obese or centrally obese, respectively. Having both caries experience and gingivitis/calculus associated with the development of excess weight in a fully adjusted model (HR 1.75, 95% CI 1.03–2.97) but not of central obesity. Caries experience or gingivitis/calculus alone did not associate with adiposity development. Conclusion: Having burden of oral diseases without excess weight at early adolescence could imply future weight gain; thus, normal-weight individuals with both caries experience and gingivitis/calculus could be targeted with preventive measures. Our findings warrant further research to explore whether oral diseases and the development of obesity merely share risk factors or if their relationship is of causal nature. Comprehensive health records (CHRs) that encompass patients' medical and dental information is here and now. CHRs enable health care providers to deliver personalized, precision medicine/dentistry effectively and efficiently. The objective of this report is to provide an overview of strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities associated with a comprehensive health care record system that integrates medical and dentalrecords. Strengths and benefits of CHRs (elevated patient safety, collaborative care, holistic patient care, enhanced research capabilities) are explained, and practical challenges associated with operating multiple record systems (specifically in medical and dental imaging), data migration and integration are explored. This study evaluated in vivo, an intraoral device against the gold standard esophageal device for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) monitoring. Subjects scheduled for a catheter-based esophageal pH/impedance testing at a gastroenterology clinic were recruited. They were screened using the GerdQ questionnaire, demographics and dental conditions recorded. A prototype intraoral device, consisting of a Bravo™ capsule embedded in an Essix-style retainer fabricated for each subject, monitored intraoral pH. Concurrently, subjects underwent 24-h esophageal pH-impedance monitoring. A self-administered survey elicited the comfort and acceptance of both devices. The study recruited ten adult subjects (23 to 60-years-old) with a median GerdQ score of 9.5 corresponding to a 79% likelihood of GERD. Subjects with severe dental erosion had significantly (p < 0.05) higher acid exposure time and more non-meal reflux events. No adverse events were associated with the intraoral device while one was recorded for the esophageal device. The intraoral device was significantly more comfortable to place, more comfortable to wear, and interfered less with daily routine compared to the esophageal device. Accuracy of the intraoral device ranged between 86.15% and 37.82%. Being more tolerable than traditional esophageal pH monitoring, intraoral pH monitoring may be a useful adjunct for the diagnosis and management of GERD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although reimplantation is currently a common treatment procedure, little information on reimplantation success or failure is available in the literature. The purpose of the present investigation was to evaluate the survival rate of dental implants that were performed in sites of previously failed implants and identify factors associated with the treatment outcome. This retrospective study is based on a cohort of patients rehabilitated with dental implants in the dental clinics of the universities contributing data to the BigMouth network between 2011 and 2022. Implants replacing a previously failed implant at the same site were included. Cases of first and second reimplantations were included Information regarding patients' characteristics including age, gender, ethnicity, race, tobacco use, and systemic medical conditions were extracted from patients' files. Records of 50,333 dental implants placed in 20,842 patients over a 12-year period were screened. Three hundred seventy implants placed in 284 patients were replaced by another implant at the same site. The cumulative survival rates of implants inserted for the first time was 98.6 %, for the first replacements was 96.1 % and for the second replacements was 91.7 %. First reimplants exhibited a significantly higher risk of failure than initial implantation (P < 0.001). Similarly, second reimplants demonstrated significantly greater risk of failure (P = 0.05) when compared to initial implants. No significant associations were detected between replaced implant failures with any of the patient related parameters evaluated (P > 0.05). Within the limitations of the present study, dental implants replacing failed implants exhibited lower survival rates than the rates reported for the previous attempts of implant placement. Although rare, oral manifestations of hypersensitivity reactions in orthodontic patients pose a significant clinical challenge due to their heterogeneous presentations, and can cause discomfort and pain, possibly impacting patients' quality of life and orthodontic treatment duration and outcomes. This comprehensive review aimed to elucidate the oral, perioral, and systemic manifestations of hypersensitivity reactions in orthodontic subjects, focusing on patients with fixed appliances, removable appliances, and clear aligners, and detailing their epidemiology, macroscopic and microscopic features, allergy testing, clinical implications, and specific management strategies. Oral and extra-oral manifestations of (immediate and delayed) hypersensitivity reactions occur rarely and are due to the release of metal and non-metal ions from orthodontic appliances. They typically present as erythema, erosive–ulcerative lesions, and gingival hyperplasia, with histopathological findings showing inflammatory infiltrates. Nickel is a significant allergen, and diagnostic tests like patch tests are essential for managing these reactions. Likely due to prolonged contact with oral tissues, fixed orthodontic appliances pose a higher risk compared to removable appliances and clear aligners. Early identification and removal of allergenic materials, combined with effective treatments, can resolve symptoms and prevent recurrence. Keeping dental and medical records updated and knowing family and personal medical histories helps clinicians choose appropriate materials and counsel patients about potential risks. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the predictors of survival of non‐occlusal non‐incisal glass‐ionomer restorations as a surrogate for root surface restorations among older adults. Methods: In a retrospective cohort analysis using the University of Iowa College of Dentistry electronic dental records, we included 721 patients aged 65+ who received 2+ surface non‐occlusal non‐incisal glass ionomer restorations placed from January 2005 – December 2011. Restorations were followed until September 2017 or until they were deemed to have failed. Results: At baseline, participants' mean age was 77.6 ± 8.2 years, and 45.8% were females. Most patients were self‐pay (65.2%). Most restorations were placed by residents and dental students (82.7%) and included only two surfaces (95.6%). About half (49.1%) failed during follow‐up, with a median survival time of 3.7 years. The time ratio for lower incisors compared to other teeth was 0.6 (p =.006), for three‐and‐four‐surface restorations compared to two was 0.7 (p =.007), for faculty as providers compared to residents and students was 1.4 (p =.039), and for the Geriatric & Special Needs Clinic compared to others was 0.8 (p =.013). Time ratios less than one indicate association with shorter durations for restorations, and time ratios greater than one indicate association with longer durations for restorations. Establishing the identity of a person is important in the field of forensic odontology. This field can be helpful in identifying charred corpses in cases involving intense heat. Bones and body tissues can be extremely damaged due to heat, in such cases dental records have become a reliable source of identification. Dental Identification of charred human remains begins with the examination of dental features such as teeth anatomy, morphology, dental implants, oral health, restorations, fillings, dental anomalies and overall dental structure. These features remain resistant to extreme heat and can thus be compared with that of the ante-mortem records. When the postmortem and ante-mortem records match a successful identification is done. Dental features may also be damaged and become less effective for identification when temperatures rise above a particular range. In order to help with the identification of charred human remains, this research intends to give forensic experts a clear understanding of the circumstances in which dental records can be used by examining the effects of extreme temperature within the 400--800°C range. By gaining insights into this particular range and its effects on dental tissues and records gives forensic experts a chance to solve complex cases involving burned corpses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An impacted third molar is one of the most common abnormalities of the tooth position, impacting patients and their quality of life. Based on the impact and the invasive removal procedure, this study aimed to evaluate the characteristics of impacted third molars based on their radiographic features as well as their association with demographic characteristics. Outpatient dental records of the oral and maxillofacial surgery department of Hasan Sadikin Hospital, Bandung, Indonesia, from 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2019, were sorted, and relevant clinical and demographic data and panoramic radiographic examination results were extracted from these records. All data were then tabulated and analyzed by using SPSS version 29. As many as 3019 impacted third molars were identified. Our findings suggested the association between age to the occurrence of impacted third molars where patients aged between 17 and 29 years old showed high occurrences of impacted third molars. Male patients with impacted third molars are more likely to have multiple impacted third molars, while this risk decreases in females. Radiographic examination showed that the mesioangular position is the most common position for mandibular third molars. Background and objectives: Some hospital dental departments offer treatment such as full dental clearance to low income, high health needs patients, as capacity allows. Many patients accessing this pathway have chronic health conditions. This study describes an interdepartmental quality assurance initiative, which included a clinical audit focussed on measuring equity of access to a hospital dental clearance pathway. This study's secondary focus on diabetes was because it is an example of a chronic health condition associated with high health needs and suboptimal oral health. Methods: This retrospective clinical audit reviewed e-health records of consecutive patients accessing Te Whatu Ora Waitaha's dental clearance pathway over eighteen months. Demographic data included prioritised ethnicity and NZDep2018. Clinical data included clinical diagnoses, medications, and for patients with diabetes, HbAlc (glycated haemoglobin). Results: Dental and medical records of 220 patients were reviewed. 23% were Maori and 17% had diabetes. Patients undergoing dental clearance had a higher NZDep2018 score, when compared to the local adult population (p<0.001). Summarising clinical data from those with diabetes (N=37), and without diabetes (N=183), showed that diabetes was associated with a greater number of diagnoses (p<0.001), and more prescribed medications (p<0.001). Most people with diabetes had an HbAlc above target. Conclusions: This study showed that it is possible to develop a pathway for publicly funded dental clearance so that barriers to access are minimised for patients with high social deprivation, Maori, and those with long-term conditions such as diabetes. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of "Embrace WetBond", a fluoride-releasing self-adhesive resin cement in preventing the development of white spot lesions (WSLs) during orthodontic treatment. Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on the dental records of 140 patients treated with fixed orthodontic appliances in a private orthodontic clinic in Tehran, Iran. Patients were divided into two equal groups based on the type of adhesive used for bonding orthodontic attachments: Group 1 (control), Transbond XT and Group 2, Embrace wetBond. The prevalence and severity of WSLs were assessed in all teeth from the first molar to the first molar of both jaws using post-treatment photographs. The data were analyzed by chi-square and Mann-Whitney U test and a P-value<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The prevalence and severity of WSLs were significantly lower in the Embrace WetBond group compared to the Transbond XT group (P=0.02 and P=0.003). The difference in WSL prevalence between the maxilla and mandible was insignificant within each group (P>0.05). The highest prevalence of WSLs was in maxillary lateral incisors (21.4%) and mandibular first molars (15.7%) in the Transbond XT group and maxillary lateral incisors (7.1%) in the WetBond group. Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that Embrace WetBond adhesive may effectively reduce the risk of WSL development in patients treated with fixed orthodontic appliances. Purpose. The authors of this study proposed an innovative approach involving the use of Biodentine™ material as an intraorifice barrier in cracked teeth with root extension to promote internal crack sealing, preventing the possibility of microinfiltration and apical crack propagation. Materials and Methods. The dental records of 11 patients with 12 posterior cracked teeth with root extension were included with a precise protocol performed by a senior endodontist. The treatment protocol included pulp diagnosis, crack identification using a dental operating microscope (DOM), endodontic treatment, placing a Biodentine™ as an intraorifice barrier, and immediate full-coverage restoration. The effectiveness of the treatment was assessed at two intervals, 6 months, and 1−3 years posttreatment, evaluating clinical, radiographic, and tomographic aspects. The treatment was deemed successful if there were no indications of radiolucency, sinus tracts, edema, or periodontal pockets associated with the crack line. Results. The study observed remarkably positive outcomes during the follow-up period, which spanned from 1 to 3 years. All the cracked teeth (100%) remained asymptomatic, meaning they were free of pain or discomfort. Furthermore, these teeth were in occlusal function. Both radiographic and tomographic assessments revealed the absence of bone loss along the crack line. This outcome signifies that the treatment effectively prevented further deterioration of the surrounding bone. Conclusions. Integrating advanced biomaterials and conservative restorative techniques has paved the way for innovative approaches in dental care. This protocol suggests a proactive step for managing cracked teeth with root extension. It addresses both biological aspects by sealing internal cracks and mechanical aspects by preventing crack progression, thereby improving these teeth' prognosis and long-term survival. A critical examination of the literature for dental wear publications highlighted three distinct areas, clinical data, laboratory data and the simulation of the clinical situation data. The imprecision of the clinical data values from direct and indirect in vivo methods renders the clinical data compromised at best. Laboratory data showed a focus on finding a correlation between simplistic laboratory abrasive wear resistance studies and established materials science laboratory techniques, but with no actual correlation identified. Replication of the masticatory cycle in the mouth in the form of an oral wear simulator has focussed more on the wear testing devices rather than the wear quantification methods. As a result, the data acquisition variables in the x- and y-planes need to be examined to consider how they can influence the accuracy and precision of the laboratory wear measurements recorded in the dental literature. Objectives: To evaluate the longevity of resin composite restorations placed in posterior teeth by dental students, using data from electronic records from 2008 to 2019. Materials and methods: Demographic (gender and age) and clinical variables (dental group, position in dental arch, and the number of restored surfaces) were evaluated. The 5-year follow-up was assessed according to the day the restoration was placed. Kaplan-Meier curves were generated to calculate the annual failure rate. Data were analyzed by Chi-Square, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney tests (α = 0.05). Results: In total, 3.883 records relative to return periodicity were analyzed. The final sample consisted of 900 restorations from 479 patients. The majority were females, aged between 31 and 60. In total, 256 failures were reported (success rate = 78%), showing an annual failure rate of 2.05%. The main reasons for failures were restoration replacement (55.5%), endodontics (21.9%), prosthetics (14.5%) and extraction (8.2%). There was a higher risk of failure in restorations involving three or more surfaces (p = 0.000) and in patients over 60 years (p < 0.001). In females (p = 0.030), molars (p = 0.044), and maxillary teeth (p = 0.038) failed in a shorter time. Conclusions: Resin composite restorations placed in permanent posterior teeth by dental students had high survival rates. The main reason for failure was the replacement of restorations. The age group and the number of restored surfaces significantly affected the success of the restorations. Clinical relevance: The electronic health records over 12 years showed that 78% of the resin restorations in posterior teeth placed by dental students were successful for a minimum of five years. Caries is a partially heritable disease, raising the possibility that a polygenic score (PS, a summary of an individual's genetic propensity for disease) might be a useful tool for risk assessment. To date, PS for some diseases have shown clinical utility, although no PS for caries has been evaluated. The objective of the study was to test whether a PS for caries is associated with disease experience or increment in a cohort of Swedish adults. A genome-wide PS for caries was trained using the results of a published genome-wide association meta-analysis and constructed in an independent cohort of 15,460 Swedish adults. Electronic dental records from the Swedish Quality Registry for Caries and Periodontitis (SKaPa) were used to compute the decayed, missing, and filled tooth surfaces (DMFS) index and the number of remaining teeth. The performance of the PS was evaluated by testing the association between the PS and DMFS at a single dental examination, as well as between the PS and the rate of change in DMFS. Participants in the highest and lowest deciles of PS had a mean DMFS of 63.5 and 46.3, respectively. A regression analysis confirmed this association where a 1 standard deviation increase in PS was associated with approximately 4-unit higher DMFS (P < 2 × 10−16). Participants with the highest decile of PS also had greater change in DMFS during follow-up. Results were robust to sensitivity analysis, which adjusted for age, age squared, sex, and the first 20 genetic principal components. Mediation analysis suggested that tooth loss was a strong mediating factor in the association between PS and DMFS but also supported a direct genetic effect on caries. In this cohort, there are clinically meaningful differences in DMFS between participants with high and low PS for caries. Purpose: With success rates comparable to that of root canal treatment, vital pulp therapy (VPT) has gained clinical interest and has been used in the management of young permanent teeth with inflamed pulps. The aim of the present study was to retrospectively evaluate the radiographic success of VPT in young first permanent molars 24 months post-treatment and correlate findings with tooth and treatment-related characteristics. Materials and Methods: Dental records of all patients with first permanent molars which received VPT in the Department of Paediatric Dentistry (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens) were retrieved. Demographic characteristics and data regarding the treatment performed were recorded. Patients' radiographs were evaluated at 6, 12 and 24 months post-treatment by two qualified paediatric dentists blinded regarding the treatment performed. Radiographic success, reasons for failure and continuation of root development were evaluated. Differences were tested using the x² and Student's t-test, and possible correlations were determined by calculating the odds ratio. Results: Overall radiographic success rate at 24 months was 77%, ranging between 50% for direct pulp capping and 92% for full pulpotomy. Differences were not statistically significant. Continuation of root development was recorded in almost 1/3 of the teeth and completion in almost 1/5. No statistically significant association was recorded between the outcome and any tooth and treatment-related variables. Purpose: The purpose of the present observational study was to assess the prevalence of radiographic alveolar bone loss (ABL) as a function of age at the Periodontics Clinics at the College of Dentistry, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Materials and Methods: Medical and dental healthcare records of individuals visiting the Periodontics Clinics at College of Dentistry, King Saud University, Riyadh Saudi Arabia were assessed. The following information was retrieved: age, gender, educational status, and systemic diseases (diabetes mellitus [DM], hypertension, osteoporosis and obesity). Digital full-mouth radiographs were retrieved from patients' dental records, and marginal bone loss (MBL) was assessed on the mesial and distal surfaces of all teeth. Logistic regression analyses (LRA) were done to assess the correlation between ABL and gender, age, educational status and duration since diagnosis of the aforementioned systemic conditions. p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: In total, medical and periodontal healthcare records of 495 individuals were retrieved and assessed. All individuals were citizens of the KSA. Among these, 107 were healthy controls and 98, 95, 96 and 99 individuals had a medical diagnosis of type-2 DM, hypertension, obesity and osteoporosis, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference in the mean age and gender of all medically compromised participants. The prevalence of mild, moderate, and severe periodontitis in the total patient population was 51.4%, 37.5% and 36.5%, respectively. Among all healthy controls, the prevalence of mild, moderate, and severe periodontitis was 16.3%, 25.5% and 33.4%, respectively. There was no difference in the prevalence of mild, moderate, and severe periodontitis in relation to advancing age in the entire patient population. Conclusion: Advancing age did not seem to affect ABL in the present patient population. Introduction: The quality of dental medical records is essential for clinical and forensic purposes. However, more is needed to know about the quality of these stories for these purposes in the Colombian context. Objective: To evaluate the quality of dental information in medical records for forensic purposes. Method: A descriptive study was designed to analyze medical records taken during 2022. Results: One-hundred twenty medical records were reviewed, 72% of the odontography was correctly completed, 88% were legible, 75.4% were updated treatments, 56% were completed "satisfactorily," 44% presented deletions and amendments, 8% had updated dental symbols for treatment, and 92% presented inconsistencies. Conclusions: The quality of dental histories for forensic purposes is limited. Analytical studies are needed to study the factors associated with the quality of dental records for forensic purposes. Objectives: Ancient human dental calculus is a unique, nonrenewable biological resource encapsulating key information about the diets, lifestyles, and health conditions of past individuals and populations. With compounding calls its destructive analysis, it is imperative to refine the ways in which the scientific community documents, samples, and analyzes dental calculus so as to maximize its utility to the public and scientific community. Materials and Methods: Our research team conducted an IRB‐approved survey of dental calculus researchers with diverse academic backgrounds, research foci, and analytical specializations. Results: This survey reveals variation in how metadata is collected and utilized across different subdisciplines and highlights how these differences have profound implications for dental calculus research. Moreover, the survey suggests the need for more communication between those who excavate, curate, and analyze biomolecular data from dental calculus. Discussion: Challenges in cross‐disciplinary communication limit researchers' ability to effectively utilize samples in rigorous and reproducible ways. Specifically, the lack of standardized skeletal and dental metadata recording and contamination avoidance procedures hinder downstream anthropological applications, as well as the pursuit of broader paleodemographic and paleoepidemiological inquiries that rely on more complete information about the individuals sampled. To provide a path forward toward more ethical and standardized dental calculus sampling and documentation approaches, we review the current methods by which skeletal and dental metadata are recorded. We also describe trends in sampling and contamination‐control approaches. Finally, we use that information to suggest new guidelines for ancient dental calculus documentation and sampling strategies that will improve research practices in the future. Background: Migraine is common in women of reproductive age. Migraine's episodic manifestation and acute and preventive pharmacological treatment options challenge studying drug safety for this condition during pregnancy. To improve such studies, we aimed to develop algorithms to identify and characterize migraines in electronic healthcare registries and to assess the level of care. Methods: We linked four registries to detect pregnancies from 2009–2018 and used three algorithms for migraine identification: i) diagnostic codes, ii) triptans dispensed, and iii) a combination of both. We assessed migraine severity using dispensed drugs as proxies. ICD-10 diagnostic subcodes of migraine (G43) allowed the allocation of four subtypes: complicated and/or status migrainosus; with aura; without aura; other/unspecified. Results: We included 535,089 pregnancies in 367,908 women with available one-year lookback. The prevalence of migraines identified was 2.9%–4.3% before, and 0.8%–1.5% during pregnancy, depending on algorithm used. Pregnant women with migraine were mostly managed in primary care. Conclusions: Primary care data in combination with drug dispensation records were instrumental for identification of migraine in electronic healthcare registries. Data from secondary care and drug dispensations allow better characterization of migraines. Introduction: Human Identification based on dental evidence cannot be accomplished if antemortem dental records are unavailable or of poor quality. The involvement of the orthodontist in mass disaster victim identification processes may be crucial in relation to the amount and quality of the records which can be obtained before, during, and following the treatment. Aim: The aim of the study is the description of the contribution of the findings drawn from orthodontic records to the identification of victims of mass disasters who had received an orthodontic treatment, through the presentation of two cases. The first case involves the identification of a child victim of a plane crash and the second case involves the identification of two identical twin girls who died in a fire. In both cases, the identification was based on the findings obtained from the ante-mortem records provided by the orthodontist. Conclusions: The orthodontists apply customized orthodontic appliances and keep a comprehensive file of images, casts, radiographs, and other records in their practice. As a result, they can make a substantial contribution to the identification of young people or even adult victims of mass disasters in any case in which the authorities make a request. A common application for intraoral scanners is the digitization of the morphology of teeth and palatal rugae. Palatal scans are most commonly required to fabricate complete dentures and immediate transitional dentures and serve as a reference point for assessing orthodontic results. However, they are also frequently included by accident, even though the main purpose of intraoral scanning is to reconstruct dentition using computer-aided manufacturing (CAM). The literature shows that the identification of disaster victims has frequently involved palatal rugae impressions. As the skull provides sound insulation, the rugae are resistant to heat, chemicals, and stress. Antemortem data might be difficult to find during a forensic inquiry, particularly in disaster victim identification cases. In contrast with DNA and fingerprints, there is a greater likelihood of having a dental record that contains palatal scans. With specialized software, the scans can be exported as open stereolithography (STL) files. Considering that a full case consumes up to about 100 MB of hard drive space, long-term storage should not be an issue compared to a plaster model. Additionally, dentists widely use online databases to exchange data for smile design, implant registration, and orthodontic purposes. This will produce a digital database that grows quickly and is readily usable for forensic investigations. The uniqueness of forensic features is frequently challenged; however, palatal morphology's unique trait could make it possible as it is characteristic of individuals as well as the most distinguishing factor. Purpose: To assess whether there were differences in treatment completion and visit attendance between patients who had a new patient synchronous teledentistry visit and those who did not. Methods: The sample included 654 children aged one to 17 referred to the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa, USA; 82 (12.5 percent) had a first visit by teledentistry and 572 (87.5 percent) in person. Electronic dental records were reviewed. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to compare treatment completion and second-visit attendance between groups. In addition, subgroup analyses were conducted for children scheduled in the operating room and the dental clinic. Results: In bivariate analyses, treatment completion and second-visit attendance were not significantly different between groups. Children seen by teledentistry did not have significantly different odds of treatment completion (odds ratio [OR] equals 1.278, 95 percent confidence interval [CI] equals 0.68 to 2.57; P=0.47) or second visit attendance (OR equals 0.695, 95 percent CI equals 0.35 to 1.29; P=0.27) relative to children with an initial visit in person. The dental clinic and operating room subgroups had similar trends. Conclusion: Children seen for an initial visit by teledentistry or in person achieved comparable degrees of treatment completion and second-visit attendance, thereby improving access to care. Custom-made cast post-and-core (CMCPC) restorations have long been used to restore structurally deficient endodontically treated teeth (ETT). However, the evidence regarding their impact on the outcomes of ETT is largely inconclusive. This study evaluated the long-term treatment outcome of ETT restored with CMCPC. This retrospective cohort study examined the dental records of patients that received CMCPC at a specialty private practice in Toronto, Canada between 1999 and 2021. The proportion of ETT with complete periapical healing and those that survived were estimated, and prognostic factors were investigated using multiple logistic and Cox regression analyses respectively (P <.05). A total of 500 and 1000 teeth met periapical healing and survival criteria, respectively. The periapical healing rate was 88.8% and was associated with the presence of baseline periapical radiolucency [odds ratio = 0.1; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.05–0.2; P <.001]. The survival after a median follow-up time of 52.9 months (interquartile range: 26.5–99.4) was 90.1% and was associated with <75% of root length in bone [hazard ratio (HR) = 2.6; 95% CI, 1.0–6.6; P =.033], type and quality of final restoration (HR = 2.09; 95% CI, 1.1–3.9; P =.020; HR = 2.3; 95% CI, 1.2–4.5; P =.008, respectively), and the presence of periapical radiolucency at the latest recall (HR = 3.2; 95% CI, 1.7–6.3; P <.001). Background: Sjögren's disease (SD) is an autoimmune disease that is difficult to diagnose early due to its wide spectrum of clinical symptoms and overlap with other autoimmune diseases. SD potentially presents through early oral manifestations prior to showing symptoms of clinically significant dry eyes or dry mouth. We examined the feasibility of utilizing a linked electronic dental record (EDR) and electronic health record (EHR) dataset to identify factors that could be used to improve early diagnosis prediction of SD in a matched case-control study population. Methods: EHR data, including demographics, medical diagnoses, medication history, serological test history, and clinical notes, were retrieved from the Indiana Network for Patient Care database and dental procedure data were retrieved from the Indiana University School of Dentistry EDR. We examined EHR and EDR history in the three years prior to SD diagnosis for SD cases and the corresponding period in matched non-SD controls. Two conditional logistic regression (CLR) models were built using Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator regression. One used only EHR data and the other used both EHR and EDR data. The ability of these models to predict SD diagnosis was assessed using a concordance index designed for CLR. Results: We identified a sample population of 129 cases and 371 controls with linked EDR-EHR data. EHR factors associated with an increased risk of SD diagnosis were the usage of lubricating throat drugs with an odds ratio (OR) of 14.97 (2.70-83.06), dry mouth (OR = 6.19, 2.14–17.89), pain in joints (OR = 2.54, 1.34–4.76), tear film insufficiency (OR = 27.04, 5.37–136.), and rheumatoid factor testing (OR = 6.97, 1.94–25.12). The addition of EDR data slightly improved model concordance compared to the EHR only model (0.834 versus 0.811). Surgical dental procedures (OR = 2.33, 1.14–4.78) were found to be associated with an increased risk of SD diagnosis while dental diagnostic procedures (OR = 0.45, 0.20–1.01) were associated with decreased risk. Conclusion: Utilizing EDR data alongside EHR data has the potential to improve prediction models for SD. Background: Screening for kidney disease (KD) among high-risk patients (patients with hypertension or diabetes) allows early diagnosis, intervention and delayed progression of the disease. In low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), KD screening is still sub-optimal. This study explored the healthcare providers' perceived barriers and facilitators to KD screening among older adults with hypertension and diabetes in Mbarara southwestern Uganda. Methods: This was a descriptive qualitative study among healthcare providers caring for older adults with diabetes mellitus and hypertension at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH) in southwestern Uganda. In-depth interviews were conducted using a semi-structured interview guide. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and thematically analyzed to develop themes of barriers and facilitators. Results: We conducted 30 in-depth interviews among healthcare providers. Barriers to screening for kidney disease included patient related factors according to healthcare providers (financial hardships, poor health seeking behavior, limited knowledge and awareness), healthcare factors (work overload, ineffective patient healthcare provider communication) and system/policy related factors (lack of laboratory supplies, lack of guidelines and poor medical record keeping and documentation). With respect to facilitators, we found formation of peer support groups, effective team, and continuous medical education (CME). Conclusion: Healthcare providers encounter substantial but modifiable barriers in screening older adults for KD. The identification of barriers and facilitators in timely KD detection gives us an outlook of the problem in Uganda and leads for proposals of action. Interventions that address these barriers and promote facilitators may improve the healthcare provider's effectiveness and capacity to care including screening for patients at risk of KD. Most involve the use of teeth and oral samples for identification in a legal context. Dental anthropology, on the other hand, provides information such as characteristics of teeth, tooth morphology, size and shape changes, restoration, disease, tooth loss, wear pattern, dentistry, color and teeth. Dental records are also useful for comparing teeth; this can help determine a person's age, gender, race or ethnicity, personality and occupation, all of which can take on meaning on their own. The dental profession plays an important role as well as the responsibility to maintain accurate dental records to provide the necessary information to assist in the identification of victims. This article provides an overview of how forensic odontology and dental anthropology play an important role in identifying individuals and finding ways to resolve legal issues. The use of tooth-colored composite resin materials in dentistry is increasing. As composite restorations appear similar to the natural tooth structure, their detection is becoming more challenging. The aim of this study was to compare five diagnostic methods for detection of dental restorations and to create reliable postmortem dental records for forensic purposes. A conventional examination method without a direct light source (CONV), with a dental loupe light (DL), Galilean loupes with a direct light source (GDL), a fluorescence-inducing device (FIT), and intraoral radiographs (RX) were compared. Dentists specializing in conservative dentistry or oral surgery and dentistry students participated. Regarding sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value, FIT and RX showed significantly higher results than CONV, DL, and GDL. RX and FIT showed comparable results in identifying composite restorations but depending on their location. The combination of both methods may lead to even better results. In conclusion fluorescence-inducing devices show good results in identifying composite restorations and therefore should be considered as a standard tool in forensic examinations. Another advantage is their small size, low cost, and mobility. Good illumination and magnification devices are recommended to enhance performance during conventional examinations. To evaluate the radiographic quality of endodontically treated cases performed by undergraduate dental students at Thumbay dental hospital, Gulf Medical University (GMU) from 2020 to 2022. The sample consisted of 510 randomly selected postoperative periapical radiographs from patient records at the Thumbay dental hospital Gulf Medical University (GMU). Radiographs were from patients who underwent root canal treatment (RCT) performed by 3rd, 4th and 5th year clinical undergraduate dental students. Evaluation criteria included root canal filling (RCF) length, density, taper and the presence of iatrogenic errors. Inter-examiner agreement was measured using a Cohen's kappa test. A comparison of frequency was calculated using the Chi-square test. P-values = 0.05 were considered significant. Adequate length, density, and taper of the root canal fillings was observed in 77.2%, 34%, and 78.6% of cases, respectively. The rate of acceptable quality was higher for teeth treated by 5th -year students (33.3%) compared to those treated by 3rd -year students (20.5%). Density and taper were more adequate in patients treated by 5th -year students (38.6% and 82.1% respectively) compared to 3rd -year student (p= 0.05). Significant differences were observed in procedural errors based on tooth location, with higher percentages in the mandible (23.7%) compared to maxilla. Anterior teeth showed high rates of acceptable quality (36.6%) compared to molars (22.5%). Iatrogenic errors were observed in 19.1% of cases. This study highlights the importance of training dental students to detect and correct procedural errors in root canal procedures at early clinical stage. A notable 29.3% quality improvement achieved with stainless steel K-files, underlines the imperative for enhancing future education approaches to ensure superior results and improved patient care. Preserving the outcome of orthodontic treatment is both important and challenging. However, there is insufficient evidence regarding the best way to ensure long-term treatment outcome. The aim of this study was to evaluate a pre-fabricated chain retainer (PFCR) in terms of: ability to maintain satisfactory treatment outcomes; periodontal and dental health; complications; and patient satisfaction. Overall, 130 patients who had completed orthodontic treatment with a fixed appliance during the period 2016–2019 (follow-up time range, 24–55 months) at a specialist orthodontic clinic in Varberg, Sweden and who had a PFCR in the lower jaw were invited to take part in the study. Little's irregularity index (LII) was recorded on dental casts. Caries, gingivitis, calculus, probing pocket depth, and gingival retractions were registered during clinical examinations. Patient satisfaction and retainer complications were evaluated using a questionnaire. In total, 76 patients (58.5%) agreed to participate. All patients, except for one, had their retainer still in place, and the complication rate was 40%. The LII scores were in the range of 0–4 mm (mean, 1.42 mm). At the retainer site, 82% had calculus, 74% had gingivitis, 1% had pocket depth >4 mm, 10.5% had gingival retractions >2 mm, and 0% had caries. All the patients expressed satisfaction with their retainer. PFCRs exhibit characteristics similar to those of traditional bonded retainers in terms of complications, stability, side-effects and patient experience. Objective: To compare the survival rate against fracture of endodontically treated anterior teeth (ETT) affected by cervical (class V) lesions with pulpal involvement restored with resin composite or a post/core and crown, and to identify the prognostic factors for fracture. Methods: Dental records and radiographs of ETT affected by cervical lesions with pulpal involvement restored with resin composite or a post/core and crown during a recall period from 2009-2022 were selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The number of tooth fracture, the restorability after fracture and any possible risk factors were identified. The survival rate against ETT fracture were analyzed and compared between the two restoration groups by Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and the Tarone-Ware test. Nonproportional hazard models were used to identify the prognostic factors. The sub-analysis in each restoration group was also performed. Results: The study comprised 175 ETT restored with resin composite (n=125) or a crown (n=50). With a mean recall period of 32.9±15.8 months, the survival rate against ETT fracture with resin composite (85.6%) was not significantly different from those with a crown (88%) (p=0.05). The most frequent mode of fracture was crownroot fracture, which accounted for 78% and 83.30% of the fractures in the resin composite and crown groups, respectively. A significant prognostic factor for ETT fracture affected by cervical lesions with pulpal involvement was additional tooth structure loss from a class III, class IV or another class V lesion on the opposite side (p<0.05). The ETT affected by cervical lesions with pulpal involvement combined with additional tooth structure loss had a 7.25-fold higher risk of fracture than those with single-surface affected by cervical lesions with pulpal involvement (hazard ratio [HR] = 7.25; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.68-31.30). The sub-analysis in the crown and resin composite groups revealed that the survival rates of ETT with single-surface affected by cervical lesions with pulpal involvement was 100% and 96.15%, respectively, which were significantly higher than those of ETT with additional tooth loss at 80.65% and 78.08%, respectively (p<0.05). Conclusion: With a mean 33-month recall period, the survival rate against ETT fracture affected by cervical lesions with pulpal involvement restored with resin composite or crown were not significantly different. Introduction: Measurement of dental caries is imperative for its prevention and control. The present study was conducted with the aim of developing a dental caries index that is reliable, reversible, and valid. A cross-sectional study was designed and conducted at the outreach dental clinics of a dental school in India. Methods and Material: A total of 219 patients visiting outreach centres participated in the study. Patients attending outreach dental clinics aged 15 years and above, who were dentate and affected by dental caries, were included. Clinical examination was done under clinical conditions with dental chair lighting. Decayed Missing and Filled Teeth (DMFT) and Index of Caries Experience (ICE) were recorded using the visuo-tactile method according to the index criteria. Results: The relationship between the DMFT and ICE was determined. Results showed that the DMFT from ICE had good correlation. The decayed teeth index (DTI) score varied from decayed teeth (DT) according to age and sex. DTI was significantly higher for females than for males and higher among younger age groups than older ones, but DT did not exhibit the differences. Conclusions: ICE is a new system in which the proviso is to measure the non-cavitated lesions and health of permanent dentition. DMFT and ICE have good correlation. This study aimed to evaluate the awareness, comprehension, and practices concerning forensic odontology among dental students and faculty at a Dental School in Cyprus. An online, cross-sectional, descriptive survey, employing an adapted, self-administered questionnaire, was disseminated to all dental students and faculty at the School of Dentistry, European University Cyprus, in November 2022. The survey assessed participants' demographic information and explored their awareness with questions alluding to knowledge, attitudes and practices in forensic dentistry. Of those surveyed, 47 faculty members and 304 students responded, yielding response rates of 66.2% and 80%, respectively. Statistical analysis, including Kendall's tau test and χ2 test were employed to examine correlations and associations, with Cramer's V used to measure the strength of significant associations. The predetermined significance level was α = 0.05. Awareness levels were assessed through participants' responses to specific questions in the survey. It was revealed that 87% of faculty and 65% of students were familiar with forensic odontology. A noteworthy 94% of faculty and 85% of students recognized teeth as DNA repositories. A high percentage, 98% of faculty and 89% of students, acknowledged the role of forensic odontology in the identification of criminals and deceased individuals. Awareness of age estimation through dental eruption patterns was evident in 85% of faculty and 81.6% of students. A substantial proportion (80% of faculty) maintained dental records, while 78% of students recognized the importance of dental record-keeping in ensuring quality care. Interestingly, 57% of students and 64% of faculty were aware of the possibility of dentists testifying as expert witnesses. The majority, 95.7% of faculty and 85% of students, concurred that physical harm, scars, and behavioral alterations predominantly indicate child abuse. The findings, revealing robust awareness among respondents, underscore the importance of enhancing faculty engagement in relevant seminars to further strengthen their knowledge. Additionally, emphasizing improved record-keeping practices for potential forensic applications emerges as a crucial aspect. These insights have implications for refining dental education in Cyprus and enhancing forensic practices by promoting ongoing professional development and emphasizing meticulous record-keeping within the dental community. Objectives: The presence of dental anomalies could play a significant role in the identification of individuals by comparing antemortem and postmortem data. This crosssectional study aimed to assess the level of knowledge, attitude, and awareness among dental professionals regarding the importance of charting dental anomalies and maintaining dental records. Methodology: A self-structured questionnaire was e-mailed to dental professionals practicing in India. The responses were recorded, data tabulated, and one-way ANOVA and post hoc tests were applied for analysis. The criterion for significance was p < .05. Results: A total of 406 dental professionals responded to the survey. A significant difference was observed in the mean attitude score of participants towards the importance of charting dental anomalies and maintaining dental records with regard to place of work (p=.001), gender (p=.044) and educational qualification (p=.039). In addition, a statistically significant difference was observed in the mean awareness score of participants with respect to place of work (p=.033) and gender (p=.001). The major barriers in maintaining dental records were lack of time, adequate knowledge, infrastructure, and financial constraints. Conclusion: 81.3% and 69.26% study participants had very good awareness and attitude, whereas 71.2% had good knowledge regarding the importance of charting dental anomalies and maintenance of dental records; however, their inaccurate responses in anomaly identification hinted towards the need for proper dental charting and their maintenance to be taught en masse and made part of the BDS curriculum. This study evaluates the agreement of data on dental caries between electronic dental records and data retrieved from the national SKaPa-registry (Swedish Quality Registry for caries and periodontal disease), with special reference to e/M in deft/DMFT. In a random sample of 500 6- and 12-year-old children having received dental care in 2014 in the county region of Värmland, Sweden, the diagnostic accuracy of data in electronic dental records with corresponding data obtained from the SKaPa-registry was compared by using Cohen's Kappa and Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). For dft/DFT the Kappa was 0.95, and ICC 0.98 (total population). For deft/DMFT in the total population the Kappa was 0.80 and ICC 0.96. For 6-year-olds (deft) the Kappa was 0.89 and ICC 0.99 and for 12-year-olds (DMFT) the Kappa was 0.70, and ICC 0.83. The corresponding figures for Kappa and ICC when excluding individuals without caries (deft/DMFT = 0) were: Total population 0.63 and 0.94; 6-year-olds 0.79 and 0.99; 12-year-olds 0.42 and 0.68. Agreement between data in the dental records and SKaPa was very high for dft/DFT confirming that transfer from the dental records to the SKaPa-registry is safe and correct. As the accuracy of deft/DMFT was considerably lower than for dft/DFT we advise against using deft/DMFT data from SKaPa for research purposes at this point. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to analyze a population of patients who had suffered from traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) by using different patient-, trauma- and treatment-related parameters. Material and methods: All dental records of patients ≥ 3 years old who had presented at the dental emergency service between Jan 1, 2009 and Dec 31, 2016 for the treatment of dental trauma were analyzed. A total of 2758 patients were invited for a recall examination at the Department for Dental Surgery and Implantology, ZZMK Carolinum, Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany; of these, 269 patients attended their recall appointments. Results: The enrolled patient population consisted of 1718 males and 1040 females, with a mean age of 19.63 years (median 12.00 ± 17.354 years). A total of 4909 injured teeth were assessed, with a mean of 1.78 injured teeth per patient (median 2.00 ± 1.279). Males were found to be more frequently affected by TDIs compared to females (1.65:1). The majority of these injuries occurred in the first two decades of life (66.1%; n = 1824). The majority of the patients presented for initial treatment within 24 h of their accident (95.7%). The most frequent TDIs were isolated luxation injuries 49.4% (n = 2426) and isolated crown fractures 30% (n = 1472). Combination injuries were diagnosed in 20.6% of the cases (n = 1011). Conclusions: Based on the findings of the present analysis, it can be concluded that males were more frequently affected by TDIs than females. Most patients had suffered from TDI before they had turned 10 years of age. Overall, the enamel–dentin fracture was found to be the most frequent injury, followed by concussions and lateral luxations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Objective Dental records and forensic odontology play an important role in both healthcare and the legal system, aiding in personalized patient care, human identification, and legal proceedings. This study aims to investigate dental record-keeping practices and assess the awareness of forensic odontology among Pakistani dentists over 12 months. This study aims to collect data from 500 dentists, identify areas for enhancement, and develop a strategic action plan to improve record-keeping quality and forensic odontology application, culminating in a comprehensive dental data repository to support legal and criminal investigations in Pakistan. Methodology This study employed a mixed-method approach conducted at Hamdard Dental College from January to March 2023. The quantitative phase involved distributing questionnaires to 463 dentists, chosen through stratified random sampling. Out of these, 413 responded, yielding an 86% response rate. These questionnaires focused on dental record-keeping practices and dentists’ awareness of forensic odontology. Subsequently, based on the questionnaire results, face-to-face interviews were conducted with 20 purposively selected dentists to gain deeper insight into the challenges and potential solutions. Data from both phases were integrated and analyzed accordingly. Results The study included 413 participants, mainly females (79%), with ages ranging from 27 to 65 years and an average age of 46.4 years. Most dentists had 5–20 years of work experience (53%), and most (87.4%) were practicing in private clinical settings. All the dentists generated medical and dental records, but the duration of their record-keeping varied, with some maintaining them for up to a year and others for two years or longer. Five themes were generated from the qualitative content analysis. These themes were dentists’ perceptions, barriers and challenges, knowledge and awareness, and improvement strategies. Conclusion Our study revealed that local practitioners in Pakistan exhibit subpar practices in dental record-keeping and maintenance of patient history, irrespective of whether they use a digital or traditional file-based system. Even though dentists are cognizant of the importance of record-keeping, they do not actively maintain comprehensive records. This suggests the need for improved training and system improvements to address the gaps in record-keeping practices.

Background: Class II malocclusions are a common dental issue characterized by the misalignment of the upper and lower teeth. Early orthodontic treatment is often considered to correct these malocclusions, but its long-term effectiveness remains unclear. Materials and Methods: In this study, we examined the impact of early orthodontic treatment on the long-term stability of Class II malocclusions. We conducted a retrospective analysis of dental records from a sample of 150 patients who had received early orthodontic treatment for Class II malocclusions. The treatment involved braces and other orthodontic appliances. We compared their dental measurements before and after treatment, with a follow-up period of 5 years. Results: Our analysis revealed that the early orthodontic treatment led to a significant improvement in the alignment of upper and lower teeth, as indicated by a reduction in the overjet (the horizontal distance between upper and lower incisors). The mean overjet reduction was 3.2 millimeters. Furthermore, the Angle's Class II molar relationship was corrected in 80% of the cases. Conclusion: Early orthodontic treatment for Class II malocclusions demonstrated positive long-term stability, as evidenced by a reduction in overjet and improvement in molar relationships. Aim: The research project focuses on the creation and assessment of an innovative computer vision system designed to identify dental irregularities in individuals undergoing orthodontic treatment. Materials and Methods: To establish the computer vision system, a comprehensive dataset of dental images was collected, encompassing various orthodontic cases. The system's algorithm was trained to recognize patterns indicative of common dental anomalies, such as malocclusions, spacing issues, and misalignments. Rigorous testing and refinement of the algorithm were conducted to enhance its accuracy and reliability. Results: The validation of the system was carried out using the dental records and images of the 40 patients. The computer vision system's performance was evaluated against assessments made by experienced orthodontists. The results demonstrated a commendable level of concurrence between the system's automated detections and the orthodontists' evaluations, suggesting its potential as a valuable diagnostic tool. Conclusion: In conclusion, the development and validation of this novel computer vision system exhibit promising outcomes in its ability to automatically detect dental anomalies in orthodontic patients. Abstract Dental referrals to the Endodontics Specialty Clinic (ESC) are routine owing to the complexity of endodontic treatments. To obtain a better prognosis for treatment, students/dentists must perceive their technical limits. This study sought to investigate the referrals of patients to the ESC from different clinics of the Piracicaba Dental School, State University of Campinas - SP, Brazil, and check: a) the demographic profile of patients and the most commonly affected tooth; b) the clinic with the largest number of referrals; c) the reasons for referrals; d) the complexity of the cases; e) and the difficulty in assessing the referred cases based on the classification provided by the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) and Souza-Filho. The study sample consisted of patients’ electronic dental referral records from February 2015 to June 2019. A total of 1,707 patients were referred to the ESC during the study period, and 62.4% were female. Lower molars were the most frequently involved teeth (34.8%), and 60.7% of the cases were referred due to the presence of root curvature. The AAE classification showed prevalence of highly difficult cases (71.3%), whereas Souza-Filho classification demonstrated a high rate of class III cases (85.8%). This study highlights the difficulties encountered by undergraduate students before or during endodontic treatments, reinforcing the need for clear criteria for selecting cases appropriate for each education level, thus improving endodontic treatment prognosis.

Oral health might not only act as risk factor for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), but might also have a predictive value for the patients' survival. Currently, information on the effect of oral health on survival of patients with different sites of HNSCC is lacking. This single-center retrospective study aimed to compare oral health in patients with different sites of HNSCC and to analyse whether oral health is associated with survival in the different subsets of HNSCC patients. Dental records of HNSCC patients referred for dental assessment prior to radio(chemo)therapy were included. Patient-related parameters (age at time of diagnosis, sex, tobacco exposure, alcohol consumption, HPV status), treatment data (primary treatment, intent), performance status, tumor demographics (anatomical site, TNM staging), and oral health parameters (DMFT, periodontal health, teeth with/without root canal treatment and with/without periodontitis apicalis) were obtained. Oral health parameters were compared between different anatomical sites. Survival of all HNSCC patients and of individual subsets was assessed using Kaplan-Meier statistics, and the effect of tumor demographics, patient-related parameters, and oral health on survival was analysed by cox regression analyses (α = 5%). 371 patients with HNSCC (oral: n = 86, oropharyngeal: n = 174, hypopharyngeal: n = 59, laryngeal: n = 15, other: n = 37) were included. Oral health parameters did not differ between subsets (padj.≥0.199). Five-year cumulative survival of HNSCC patients amounted to 78.6%. Only for HNSCC originating in the oral cavity and oropharynx, survival was associated with the treatment intent (p = 0.015) or performance status (p = 0.007) in the multivariable analyses, respectively. The major significance of the 2018 gingivitis classification criteria is utilizing a simple, objective, and reliable clinical sign, bleeding on probing score (BOP%), to diagnose gingivitis. However, studies report variations in gingivitis diagnoses with the potential to under- or over-estimating disease occurrence. This study determined the agreement between gingivitis diagnoses generated using the 2018 criteria (BOP%) versus diagnoses using BOP% and other gingival visual assessments. We conducted a retrospective study of 28,908 patients' electronic dental records (EDR) from January-2009 to December-2014, at the Indiana University School of Dentistry. Computational and natural language processing (NLP) approaches were developed to diagnose gingivitis cases from BOP% and retrieve diagnoses from clinical notes. Subsequently, we determined the agreement between BOP%-generated diagnoses and clinician-recorded diagnoses. A thirty-four percent agreement was present between BOP%-generated diagnoses and clinician-recorded diagnoses for disease status (no gingivitis/gingivitis) and a 9% agreement for the disease extent (localized/generalized gingivitis). The computational program and NLP performed excellently with 99.5% and 98% f-1 measures, respectively. Sixty-six percent of patients diagnosed with gingivitis were reclassified as having healthy gingiva based on the 2018 diagnostic classification. The results indicate potential challenges with clinicians adopting the new diagnostic criterion as they transition to using the BOP% alone and not considering the visual signs of inflammation. Periodic training and calibration could facilitate clinicians' and researchers' adoption of the 2018 diagnostic system. Oral lichenoid mucositis (OLM) of the oral mucosa is a histological diagnosis mainly characterised by a band of inflammatory infiltrate in lamina propria and basal cell degeneration. These features describe oral lichen planus or oral lichenoid reaction. However, it could be seen in oral dysplasia. The study aimed to assess the demographics and clinicohistological characteristics of patients with OLM and their relevance to dysplastic changes in the oral mucosa. This was a cross-sectional and retrospective study of archived and electronic records of individuals with histological confirmation of OLM at King Saud University Medical City, Saudi Arabia. The descriptive and correlation assessments were used to describe the demographics and clinicohistological characteristics and their associations, respectively [p < 0.05]. The analysis included 140 records of patients with histological confirmation of OLM with a mean age of 47 (±13), and 57% (n = 81) were females. Notably, 40% of patients had at least one medical condition, mainly diabetes mellitus, 74% were asymptomatic, and 52% had lesions in the buccal mucosa. Dysplasia was seen in 18 (12%) of the 140 reviewed records. Regarding the associations between study variables, dysplastic changes were associated with the male gender [p = 0.024] and were of no significance with increased age [p = 0.594]. Moreover, having oral symptoms was associated with older age [p < 0.001], medical history of diabetes [p = 0.0132] and hypertension [p < 0.001]. The present study findings could help indicate the individuals with histologically confirmed OLM who suffer the most from the clinical disease and have an increased risk of dysplastic changes.
