This review aims to comprehensively explore calcium-enriched mixture (CEM) cement as a crucial biomaterial in dentistry/endodontics. With its growing clinical relevance, there is a need to evaluate its composition, chemical/physical/biological properties, clinical applications, and future perspectives to provide clinicians/researchers with a detailed understanding of its potential in endodontic procedures. Through systematic analysis of available evidence, we assess the advantages/limitations of CEM cement, offering valuable insights for informed decision-making in dental/endodontic practice. Our findings highlight the commendable chemical/physical properties of CEM cement, including handling characteristics, alkalinity, color stability, bioactivity, biocompatibility, sealing ability, and antimicrobial properties. Importantly, CEM cement has shown the potential in promoting regenerative processes, such as dentinogenesis and cementogenesis. It has demonstrated successful outcomes in various clinical applications, including vital pulp therapy techniques, endodontic surgery, open apices management, root resorption/perforation repair, and as an orifice/root canal obturation material. The efficacy and reliability of CEM cement in diverse clinical scenarios underscore its effectiveness in endodontic practice. However, we emphasize the need for well-designed clinical trials with long-term follow-up to further substantiate the full potential of CEM cement. NANOTECHNOLOGY: is the art and science of dealing with nanoscale particles. This has transformed contemporary dental practices through myriad contributions to biomaterial science. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles procured from Bacillus subtilis, an eco-friendly and biogenic source, can significantly magnify the physiochemical attributes of dental materials. However, postoperative sensitivity is a major drawback of composite restorations. The incorporation of these nanoparticles into dental adhesives can greatly benefit clinical dentistry by resolving this issue. This trial aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel titanium dioxide nanofortified adhesive on the postoperative sensitivity of composite restorations., Methods: This triple-blind, parallel-group randomized controlled trial was conducted at the Department of Operative Dentistry and Endodontics, School of Dentistry, Islamabad, from May 15, 2023, to November 25, 2023. Participants (n = 60) with Class I and II primary carious lesions with a minimum cavity depth of 3-5 mm were randomly assigned to two groups (n = 30). After obtaining informed consent, the restorative procedure was accomplished using a minimally invasive approach and etch-and-rinse adhesive strategy. In group A, a nanofortified adhesive was used for composite restoration, whereas in group B, an adhesive without nanoparticles was used. Postoperative sensitivity was evaluated using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) score at follow-up periods: of one day, one week, two weeks and one month. A Chi-square test was used to compare postoperative sensitivity between the two groups. The level of significance was set at p < 0.05., Results: A noteworthy association was observed between sensitivity and the group variable at all four evaluation periods: after one day (p = 0.002), 1 week (p = 0.002), 2 weeks (p = 0.007) and one month. In conclusion, participants who underwent restorative intervention using titanium dioxide nanoreinforced adhesives reported a notable reduction in sensitivity at all time intervals. Hence, the occurrence and severity of postoperative sensitivity are significantly reduced using Bacillus subtilis-procured nanofortified adhesives as compared to conventional adhesives without nanoparticles., Trial Registration: This trial was retrospectively registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (ID: NCT06242184) on 03/02/2024. Background: Acute pulpitis poses a significant clinical challenge. Traditional root canal treatment has been a standard approach, and the incorporation of adjunctive therapies, such as eugenol cement, presents a potential avenue for enhanced efficacy and reduced complications., Objective: This study aimed to assess the clinical efficacy of root canal treatment combined with eugenol cement for acute pulpitis and its impact on inflammatory factor levels., Design: The study employed a parallel, randomized, controlled, experimental design., Setting: The research was conducted at Suzhou Ninth People's Hospital., Participants: A total of 92 patients diagnosed with acute pulpitis and seeking treatment at our hospital between August 2020 and November 2021 were included in the study., Interventions: Participants were randomly assigned to two groups with 46 patients in each group: the control group receiving traditional root canal treatment and the experimental group receiving root canal treatment combined with eugenol cement., Primary Outcome Measures: The primary outcomes assessed included (1) treatment efficiency, (2) masticatory function, (3) complications, and levels of inflammatory factors., Results: In the study, root canal treatment combined with eugenol cement showed superior efficacy (95.7% vs. 76.1%, P < .05) compared to root canal treatment alone. After one month, both groups exhibited reduced bleeding and gingival indices, with a more significant reduction in the experimental group (P < .05). The combined treatment significantly improved masticatory efficiency and occlusal strength (P < .05). The experimental group had a lower complication rate (6.5% vs. 26.1%, P < .05) and reduced inflammatory markers (IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, LTB4) compared to the control group (P < .05)., Conclusions: Root canal treatment plus eugenol cement enhances masticatory function, reduces complications and inflammatory response in patients with acute pulpitis, alleviates dental pain and looseness, and mitigates inflammatory responses with fewer adverse effects.

Background: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are critical enzymes involved in the remodeling and defense mechanisms of dental pulp tissue. While their role in permanent teeth has been extensively studied, research focusing on MMPs in primary teeth remains limited. This gap highlights the need for further investigations to understand the specific contributions of MMPs to pulpal defense in primary teeth. Moreover, the clinical efficacy of Biodentine as a pulpotomy material in primary teeth warrants further exploration through well-designed studies to establish its success and long-term outcomes in pediatric dentistry., Aim: This study aims to compare the expression levels of MMP-2, MMP-8, and MMP-9 in cases of reversible and irreversible pulpitis. Additionally, it seeks to evaluate the clinical success of Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) and Biodentine when used as pulpotomy agents in primary molars. By analyzing the differential expression of these MMPs, the study will contribute to a better understanding of their role in pulpal inflammation and the potential therapeutic outcomes of MTA and Biodentine in primary molars., Design: In this parallel randomized controlled trial, 63 mandibular primary second molars were assigned to two main groups: Group 1, consisting of 42 teeth diagnosed with reversible pulpitis, and Group 2, consisting of 21 teeth diagnosed with irreversible pulpitis. Group 1 was further divided into two randomized subgroups, each containing 21 teeth. The expression levels of MMP-2, MMP-8, and MMP-9 were evaluated in all samples. Pulpotomy treatments were performed using MTA and Biodentine in Group 1. Clinical and radiographic evaluations were conducted over an 18-month follow-up period. Statistical analyses were carried out using The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, t-test and Fisher's exact test (p < 0.05)., Results: The study revealed that MMP-2 and MMP-9 expression levels were significantly elevated in specimens with irreversible pulpitis (p = 0.01), indicating a potential correlation between these matrix metalloproteinases and the severity of pulpal inflammation. However, no significant difference was observed in the clinical success rates of pulpotomies performed with MTA and Biodentine, suggesting that both materials are equally effective in the treatment of primary molars with reversible pulpitis., Conclusions: The expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in pulpal blood presents a promising biomarker for assessing the degree of pulpal inflammation in primary teeth, offering a potentially valuable diagnostic tool. This split-mouth blinded randomized controlled study compared the efficacy of a desensitizing agent with oxalate/resin polymer and a universal adhesive containing mesoporous bioactive glass (MBG) for dentin hypersensitivity (DH) relief, using Schiff sensitivity score (SSS) and visual analog scale (VAS). Split quadrants containing teeth with DH were treated with either MS Coat ONE or Hi-Bond Universal with MBG as the functional additive. Assessments at baseline, immediately post-application, and at 1- and 2-week follow-ups used standardized stimulus protocols (air, cold, and acid). The SSS difference was the primary outcome, while the VAS difference was the secondary outcome. A mixed linear effect model performed statistical analysis. Immediate DH reduction occurred in response to air stimuli, with a significant decrease in Group HB than in Group MS (p = 0.0178). Cold stimulus reduction exhibited a gradual cumulative effect, with consistently greater reductions in Group HB than in Group MS (p ≤ 0.0377). Both groups effectively managed acidic stimuli, with no significant differences (p > 0.05). The VAS scores decreased gradually over the follow-up period (p < 0.0001). This study highlights the differential efficacy of treatments for various DH triggers and recommends specific approaches based on different stimulus types. The universal adhesive containing MBG demonstrated DH relief potential, promising efficacy identical to or superior to that of a dedicated desensitizing agent. Further research exploring the long-term efficacy and underlying mechanisms is warranted. The universal adhesive containing MBG can be adopted as an in-office desensitizing agent for DH relief. Statement of Problem: Dental implants are particularly susceptible to occlusal overloading because, unlike natural teeth, they lack a periodontal ligament to help absorb occlusal forces. However, studies evaluating the impact of different crown and luting materials on the damping behavior and strain distribution of implant-supported crowns are lacking., Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the damping behavior and strain distribution of peri-implant bone associated with 5 different CAD-CAM implant-supported crowns and 3 luting materials., Material and Methods: A titanium implant was embedded in a plastic tube with epoxy resin and 5 different crown materials (polymethyl methacrylate, resin-infiltrated ceramic, lithium disilicate, titanium, and zirconia) luted to prosthetic abutments with 3 different luting materials (zinc oxide non-eugenol cement, zinc phosphate cement, and adhesive resin cement) and an uncemented condition were tested (n=5). Strain gauges were attached at the crestal and apical levels of the implant model. All specimens were load tested from 0 to 200 N. Slopes of load/time, microstrain/time, and time required to reach the maximum load were examined to represent the damping behavior. Absolute maximum strain (AMS) and its occurrence level were examined to represent the strain distribution. Two-way ANOVA, followed by the Tukey HSD test, were used for statistical analysis (α=.05)., Results: All slopes and times to reach the maximum load in each crown material were statistically similar (P>.05), except for the polymethyl methacrylate group, which showed less steepness in all slopes and more time required to reach the maximum load significantly (P<.05). Both the polymethyl methacrylate group (224.5 ±30.2) and the titanium group (224.0 ±24.3) exhibited significantly higher AMS at the crestal level compared with the resin-infiltrated ceramic group (210.6 ±5.0) (P<.05). The lithium disilicate (218.1 ±15.0) and zirconia groups (217.3 ±14.8) demonstrated comparable AMS values with the others (P>.05). The uncemented group demonstrated steeper slopes and less time required to reach the maximum load compared with the adhesive resin group (P<.05), while slopes and times of the zinc phosphate and zinc oxide non-eugenol groups were comparable (P>.05). The uncemented group (242.7 ±25.3) exhibited significantly higher AMS at the crestal level than the other groups (P<.05)., Conclusions: The crown material significantly affected the damping behavior of peri-implant bone, unlike the luting material. Polymethyl methacrylate with a high damping behavior exhibited high strain at the crestal level. In contrast, resin-modified ceramic with a moderate damping behavior exhibited low strain at the crestal level. Objective: This study aimed to compare the micro-shear bond strength (μSBS) of caries-affected dentin (CAD) and sound dentin (SoD) in primary and permanent teeth using an alternative self-etch application of "no wait" universal adhesive., Methods and Materials: Flat midcoronal dentin surfaces from 72 permanent third molars and 72 second primary molars were distributed randomly into 12 groups according to the substrate SoD and artificially-created CAD (pH cycling for 14 days) and the adhesive system (GLUMA Bond5, a two-step etch & rinse adhesive, GLUMA Bond, a one-step self-etch adhesive, and Tokuyama Universal Bond, a one-step self-etch adhesive) (n=12). Bonded dentin resin discs were put through micro-shear bond strength testing after 10,000 thermocycles. The results were evaluated using two-way ANOVA and the Bonferroni test with a significance level of α = 0.05., Results: When compared to SoD, the etch & rinse system's test results on artificially created CAD showed a statistically significant poorer bonding performance in both permanent and primary teeth in all groups (p<0.05). While the bond strengths of permanent teeth using total-etch adhesive on sound dentin were statistically significantly higher than those using Tokuyama Universal Bond adhesive (p<0.05), there was no significant difference in sound dentin in primary teeth (p>0.05)., Conclusions: The etch & rinse system performed the poorest of all adhesive systems on CAD. The Tokuyama Universal Bond's adhesive strength was similar in SoD and CAD on primary teeth. Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and strength of three various dentin-bonding agents used with adhesives on primary teeth., Materials and Methods: The study used 80 recently extracted, healthy human maxillary anterior primary teeth that had undergone physiologic resorption, or over-retention. Teeth were cut to expose a flat dentin surface at a depth of 1.5 mm. All samples were divided into four groups (20 samples in each group) as follows: Group I-Control group, Group II-Primary teeth bonding with 6th-generation bonding agent, Group III-Primary teeth bonding with 7th-generation bonding agent, Group IV-Primary teeth bonding with 8th-generation bonding agent. All of the samples' dentinal surfaces were covered with composite resin using a Teflon mold after adhesive had been applied. A universal testing machine (INSTRON) was used to assess the shear bond strength. Data were collected and statistically analyzed., Results: The maximum mean shear bond strength was found in 8th-generation bonding agent (30.76 ± 0.16), followed by 7th-generation bonding agent (26.08 ± 0.21), 6th-generation bonding agent (25.32 ± 0.06), and control group (6.18 ± 0.09). Statistically significant difference was found between the three different bonding agents ( p < 0.001)., Conclusion: On conclusion, the 8th-generation bonding agent demonstrated a greater shear bond strength to dentin than the 7th and 6th-generation bonding agent., Clinical Significance: The emergence of different bonding techniques to the market improves the durability and quality of restorations. An effective bonding to the tooth would also reduce bacterial penetration, marginal microleakage, possibility of pulpal inflammation preserve tooth structure, and postoperative sensitivity by allowing less cavity preparation. Purpose: The objective of this multicentre randomised controlled trial was to compare the clinical/radiographic outcomes of cervical pulpotomy using calcium-enriched mixture cement (PCEM) and pulpectomy using Metapex (PM) in primary molars with irreversible pulpitis (IP)., Methods: A total of 134 primary molars from 94 children were randomly assigned to two intervention groups: the PCEM group (n = 74) and the PM group (n = 60). Baseline characteristics including age/gender/molar type/tooth type/jaw were recorded. The primary outcome measures were clinical/radiographic success rates assessed at the first and second follow-up appointments. Secondary outcomes included reasons for clinical/radiographic failures. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the impact of various factors on the success rates., Results: The mean age of the participants in both groups was similar (PCEM group: 5.4 years, PM group: 5.5 years). Gender distribution, molar type, tooth type, jaw, and number of practitioners were comparable between the groups. The clinical success rate at the first follow-up was 98.6% in the PCEM group and 96.4% in the PM group. At the second follow-up, the clinical success rate was 97.1% in the PCEM group and 91.1% in the PM group. The radiographic success rates at the first and second follow-up were 98.6% and 96.4% in the PCEM group and 96.4% and 91.1% in the PM group, respectively. Multiple logistic regression analysis did not reveal any significant association between the success rates and age/gender/molar type/jaw, or treatment groups (P > 0.05)., Conclusion: In primary molars with IP, both simple/conservative cervical pulpotomy using calcium-enriched mixture cement and pulpectomy using Metapex demonstrated high clinical/radiographic success rates. No significant differences were observed between the two treatment modalities. Statement of Problem: Even though polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has become popular for various prosthetic indications, a standard adhesive protocol to bond the PEEK to titanium bases has not been yet established. How the heat-pressing technique performs in this respect is also not clear., Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of an adhesive system-cement combination, the heat-pressing technique, and thermomechanical aging on the retention force between titanium bases and PEEK specimens., Material and Methods: Sixty 9×11×20-mm PEEK specimens with a titanium base slot integrated into the design were milled to simulate an implant-supported PEEK framework for a cantilevered fixed prosthesis. The specimens were assigned to 8 groups (n=10) according to the titanium base primer (MKZ or Monobond) and resin cement (DTK or Multilink hybrid) used and with or without thermomechanical aging. Twenty PEEK specimens were directly heat-pressed on titanium bases, and half of the specimens were not subjected to thermomechanical aging (n=10). For nonaged groups, the PEEK specimen complex was tightened to an implant analog and secured on a custom-made pull-off device. Retention forces were measured by using the pull-off tensile test in a universal testing machine, and the maximum tensile bond strength (MPa) was calculated. The aged groups were subjected to 5000 cycles of thermal aging (5 °C to 55 °C), and the specimens were clamped to load the extension (cantilever) for 1 200 000 cycles with 120 N and 200 N at 1.5-Hz frequency. After aging, the pull-off test was performed for those specimens that survived thermomechanical aging. A nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test was used to determine whether there was a difference among the groups, followed by pairwise Wilcoxon rank tests with Bonferroni correction. The Wilcoxon rank test was used to analyze the effect of thermomechanical aging in each adhesive system-cement or heat-press group (α=.05 for all tests)., Results: None of the specimens failed during cyclic loading. According to the Kruskal-Wallis test, the effect of the PEEK-Ti base bonding technique on the retention force in the nonaged (P=.019) and thermomechanically aged groups was significant (P=.010). In the nonaged groups, the heat-pressing technique resulted in a higher retention force than when the specimens were bonded by using the Monobond-Multilink hybrid combination (P=.031). Thermomechanical aging did not significantly affect the results (P>.241). All failures were adhesive, with cement remaining only on the Ti-bases., Conclusions: All bonding protocols tested resulted in a stable bond between PEEK and Ti-bases, as all specimens survived thermomechanical aging. The heat-pressing technique resulted in mean bond strength values similar to those obtained with the tested adhesive system-cement combinations with 1 exception; the nonaged heat-pressed groups presented higher bond strength than the Monobond-Multilink hybrid combination. Failure types indicated that the weaker bond was between the PEEK and the cements tested rather than between the titanium base and the cements, regardless of the adhesive system-cement combination., (Copyright © 2022 The Authors. Statement of Problem: Although studies have explored the physical and mechanical properties of different composite resins with the preheating technique, evidence that the use of preheated restorative composite resin as a luting agent influences the adaptation of fixed dental prostheses is lacking., Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review was to answer the question: Does the use of preheated restorative composite resin as a luting agent influence the adaptation of fixed dental prostheses?, Material and Methods: Seven databases and nonpeer-reviewed literature were searched, without language or year restrictions. Studies directly comparing the adaptation of fixed dental prostheses cemented with preheated restorative composite resin or resin cement were considered eligible for inclusion. Assessment of the risk of bias was based on a 9-item checklist., Results: Of 2109 retrieved articles, 4 in vitro studies met the inclusion criteria. Three of them concluded that preheated restorative composite resin produced a greater mismatch than resin cement, and the remaining study reported that composite resin improved the adaptation of fixed dental prostheses. All included studies had a medium risk of bias. The high level of heterogeneity among the studies precluded meta-analysis., Conclusions: The use of preheated restorative composite resin as a luting agent seems to negatively influence the adaptation of fixed dental prostheses. Aim: This systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) aimed to establish a clinically relevant hierarchy of the different adhesive and/or restorative approaches to restore cavitated root caries lesions through the synthesis of available evidence., Materials and Methods: A systematic search was conducted in Medline/Web of Science/Embase/ Cochrane Library/Scopus/grey literature. RCTs investigating ≥2 restorative strategies (restorative /adhesive materials) for root caries lesions in adult patients were included. Risk of bias within studies was assessed (Cochrane&#95;RoB-2) and the primary outcome was survival rate of restorations at different follow-up times (6-/12-/24-months). Network meta-analyses were conducted using a random effects model stratified by follow-up times. I 2 -statistics assessed the ratio of true to total variance in the observed effects. All available combinations of adhesives (1-SE: one-step self-etch; 2-3ER: two-/three-step etch-and-rinse) and restorative materials (conventional composite (CC) as well as conventional and resin-modified glass ionomer cements (GIC, RMGIC)) were included. Risk of bias across studies and confidence in NMA (CINeMA) were assessed., Results: 547 studies were identified and nine were eligible for the NMA. In total, 1263 root caries lesions have been restored in 473 patients in the included clinical trials. Patients involved were either healthy (n = 6 trials), living in nursing homes (n = 1 trial) or received head-and-neck radiotherapy (n = 2 trials). There was statistically weak evidence to favour either of material/material combination regarding the survival rate. A tendency for higher survival rate (24-months) was observed for 2-3ER/CC (OR 24mths 2.65; 95% CI=1.45/4.84) as well as RMGIC (OR 24mths 2.05; 95% CI=1.17/3.61) compared to GIC. These findings were though not statistically significant and confidence of the NMA was low., Conclusion: An evidence-based choice of restorative strategy for managing cavitated root caries lesions is currently impossible. Background: The aim of this study is to evaluate the stress distributions of a primary molar tooth restored with a stainless steel crown (SSC) using resin and glass ionomer luting cements by Finite Element Analysis (FEA)., Methods: Original DICOM data of a primary molar was used to create a 3D model. One model was prepared as a tooth model with SSC. A 30 μm cement layer was used in model. Two different luting cements were tested in the study: self-cure adhesive resin cement, and glass ionomer cement. Vertical and oblique loads of 330 N were applied to simulate maximum bite force and lateral forces in the occlusal contact areas of the models. Maximum von Mises stress values in the models were evaluated as MPa., Results: The maximum von Mises stress value was observed in the force application and general occlusal contact areas for all models. The maximum von Mises stress values were higher in the tooth model with SSC using self-cure adhesive resin cement (478.09 MPa and 214.62 MPa) than in the tooth model with SSC using glass ionomer cement (220.06 MPa and 198.72 MPa) in both vertical and oblique loading, respectively., Conclusions: Depending on the magnitude of the bite force on the SSC, fracture of the luting cement materials could occur if the stress exceeds the endurance limit of the luting cement. Objective: This double-blind, split mouth randomized clinical trial aimed to assess the clinical performance of Clearfil Universal Bond Quick (CBUq) universal adhesive under different application times (no waiting and waiting) compared to Clearfil SE Bond adhesive in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) over 18 months., Methods: One hundred and eighty-three restorations were distributed randomly into three groups based on the adhesive system and waiting time: CUBq without waiting time (CUBq-NW), CUBq with a 20 s waiting time (CUBq-W), and CSE with a 20 s waiting time. After placement, restorations were evaluated after 18 months using the International Dental Federation (FDI) and United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. Statistical analyses involved Friedman repeated measures analysis of variance and Wilcoxon tests, with a significance level set at 5 %., Results: Over the 18-month period, no restorations were lost across the tested groups. Marginal adaptation evaluation indicated minor discrepancies in 21 restorations (8 CUBq-NW, 6 CUBq-W, and 7 CSE). There were no significant differences observed among the three groups following the 18-month clinical assessment (p > 0.05). Objective: The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of simplified adhesive strategies (self-etch vs selective enamel etch and 10- vs 20-second adhesive application time) on the marginal integrity in primary molars., Methods: Forty deep class-II cavities were prepared in 40 extracted primary molars. The molars were divided into 4 groups based on the applied universal adhesive strategy as follows: groups 1 and 2: selective enamel etch with 20- or 10-second application time and groups 3 and 4: self-etch with 20- or 10-second application time. All cavities were restored with a sculptable bulk-fill composite restoration. The restorations underwent a thermomechanical loading (TML, 5-50 °C, 2-minute dwelling time, ×1000; 400,000 loading cycles, 1.7 Hz, 49 N). Marginal analysis before and after TML was conducted with scanning electron microscopy and the marginal integrity of each restoration was calculated as a percentage of continuous margins. A beta regression model was adopted to statistically analyse the data with a consequent pairwise comparison., Results: The mean marginal integrity (% ± SD) of the restorations for each tested adhesive strategy after TML was as follows: selective enamel etch/20 seconds = 85.4 ± 3.9, self-etch/20 seconds = 85.3 ± 5.2, self-etch/10 seconds = 80.1 ± 8.2, and selective enamel etch/10 seconds = 80.0 ± 8.5. The difference between both adhesive strategies was not statistically significant at the same application time. The difference between both application times within the same adhesive strategy was statistically significant (P ≤ .01)., Conclusions: Universal adhesives applied either in selective enamel etch or in self-etch mode result in comparable marginal integrities when restoring class-II cavities in primary molars. Objective: The aim of this study was to review the selection criteria of resin cements for different types of partial coverage restorations (PCRs) and investigate if the type of restorations or restorative materials affect the type of selected resin cement., Materials and Methods: An electronic search (1991-2023) was performed in PubMed, Medline, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases by combinations of related keywords., Results: A total of 68 articles were included to review the selection criteria based on the advantages, disadvantages, indications, and performance of resin cements for different types of PCRs., Conclusions: The survival and success of PCRs are largely affected by appropriate cement selection. Self-curing and dual-curing resin cements have been recommended for the cementation of metallic PCRs. The PCRs fabricated from thin, translucent, and low-strength ceramics could be adhesively bonded by light-cure conventional resin cements. Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate remineralisation and its effect on microtensile bond-strength of artificially induced caries affected dentin (CAD) when treated with a commercial universal adhesive modified with poly(amidoamine) dendrimer (PAMAM) loaded mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (A-PMBG)., Material and Methods: Mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBG) were synthesised using sol-gel process, where PAMAM was loaded (P-MBG) and added to commercial adhesive at different weight percentages (0.2, 0.5, 1 and 2 wt%). First, rheological properties of commercial and modified adhesives were evaluated. The effect of remineralization/hardness and microtensile bond-strength (MTBs) of those samples that mimicked the rheological properties of commercial adhesives were evaluated using Vickers hardness tester and universal testing machine respectively. Scanning-Electron microscope was used to visualize failed samples of MTBs and remineralization samples. Both evaluations were carried out at 1-,3 and 6-month intervals, samples being stored in stimulated salivary fluid during each time interval., Results: Addition of nanoparticles altered the rheological properties. With increase in the weight percentage of nanoparticles in commercial adhesive, there was significant increase in degree of conversion, viscosity and sedimentation rate (p < 0.05). The 0.2 and 0.5 wgt% groups closely mimicked the properties of commercial adhesive and were evaluated for remineralization and MTBs. After 6 months, 0.2wgt% group showed increased MTBs (p < 0.05) and 0.5wgt% group increased remineralization/hardness (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: The complex of PAMAM-MBG-Universal adhesive can remineralize the demineralised CAD thereby improving its bond-strength when evaluated for up to 6-months., (© 2023. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of 2% chlorhexidine (CHX) on an etch-and rinse adhesive to dentin. Caries-free molars were selected and processed to expose a flat dentin surface. The specimens were bonded with a composite resin by an etch-and-rinse adhesive, which was pretreated with 2% CHX for 0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 seconds. The microtensile bond strength (MTBS) was evaluated before and after thermocycling. No significant differences were observed between groups before thermocycling. The 60-second CHX-pretreated group showed a significantly greater MTBS than the control group after thermocycling. The 2% CHX pretreatment could improve the bonding strength of the etch-and-rinse adhesive and slow down the aging progress of the bonding interface.

Objectives: To evaluate the absence of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) on the adhesive properties with enamel and dentin of universal adhesive systems containing 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP)., Methods and Materials: One hundred and twelve caries-free third molars were used to test adhesion to dentin (n=64) and enamel (n=48). For each substrate, teeth were divided into eight experimental groups: four different adhesives each using two adhesive strategies. The adhesives used were: (1) Scotchbond Universal (SBU, 3M Oral Care, St Paul, MN, USA) as a HEMA-containing universal adhesive; (2) Gluma Bond Universal (GBU, Kulzer, Hanau, Germany); (3) Solare Universal Bond (SUB, GC, Tokyo, Japan); and (4) Zipbond Universal (ZIP, SDI, Victoria, Australia) as HEMA-free universal adhesives. The adhesive strategies used were etch-and-rinse (ER) and self-etch (SE). For dentin tests, the occlusal third of the crown of all teeth was removed and an adhesive protocol was applied. After completing the restoration, specimens were sectioned into bonded sticks (0.8 mm 2) and tested for microtensile bond strength (μTBS), in situ degree of conversion (DC), and nanoleakage (NL) by scanning electron microscopy. For enamel tests, teeth were sectioned into four parts (buccal, lingual, and proximal), and an adhesive protocol was applied. After completing the restoration, the specimens were tested for their microshear bond strength (μSBS). For in situ degree of conversion (DC) and nanoleakage (NL) evaluation of enamel, the specimens were sectioned in slices to be evaluated. The data for each substrate were subjected to two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05) for each property evaluated., Results: The SBU and ZIP adhesives showed the highest μSBS, and DC (dentin and enamel) and lower NL (dentin) values compared to GBU and SUB (p=0.001). However, SBU showed better results in terms of μTBS and μSBS (SE strategy), and DC (dentin and enamel) than ZIP. Strategy ER presented higher values of μTBS and μSBS when compared to strategy SE (p=0.001), except for SBU., Conclusion: The effect of the absence of HEMA in commercial universal adhesive systems on enamel and dentin adhesive properties appears to be material-dependent., (©Operative Dentistry, 2023.)

Dentists frequently encounter the need to cement indirect restorations in clinical situations that are less than ideal, and the longevity and predictability of the indirect restorative materials used in such cases is largely predicated on the chemical and/or mechanical bond formed between the natural tooth or abutment and the cement. These non-ideal scenarios have been a significant driver in the continued evolution of self-adhesive resin cements (SARCs) with added functional monomers, such as 10-MDP. This article discusses three real-world case studies in which a newly developed universal SARC was utilized and combined with the use of an optional adhesive-enhancing primer that employs a proprietary "touch-cure" technology, or a light-cured adhesive, to improve the bond strength of the resin cement and enhance patient outcomes.

Purpose: To assess the clinical performance of restorations with ground and unground enamel for diastema closure., Methods and Materials: Twenty-four patients attended and received two to ten composite build-ups for diastema closure. The restorations were performed separately by grinding and not grinding the enamel on the proximal surfaces on symmetric teeth. A nanofill direct composite (Filtek Ultimate Universal Restorative System, 3M ESPE, St Paul, MN, USA) was used with a three-step etch-and-rinse adhesive (Scotchbond Multi-Purpose, 3M ESPE) for restorations. Restorations were evaluated according to the modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria at baseline and 1-, 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-year recalls., Results: The cumulative success rate of direct composite build-up with ground and unground enamel was 100% and 88.7%, respectively. Six restorations with unground enamel failed due to fracture. No significant difference was found between the restorations with ground enamel and unground enamel with regard to the evaluation criteria., Conclusion: The 5-year success rates of restorations with ground and unground enamel were excellent. The success rate of restorations with ground enamel was higher than that of restorations with unground enamel. The aim of this case report is to describe the treatment of a maxillary right central incisor with pulpal necrosis and incomplete root formation. The 14-year-old patient had experienced trauma to both maxillary central incisors approximately 2 years earlier. Therapy consisted of apexification with a bioceramic reparative cement to form an apical plug. After the clinical and radiographic evaluations, the clinician opened the crown, performed the chemical-mechanical preparation, and placed calcium hydroxide-based medication. At the next appointment, 24 days later, the intracanal medication was removed through passive ultrasonic instrumentation; the canal was dried; and the bioceramic cement was inserted into the apical portion with the aid of a mineral trioxide aggregate holder. A sterile cotton ball, moistened with distilled water, was used to maneuver the material in the apical region, and a periapical radiograph was exposed to confirm the correct placement of the bioceramic reparative cement. The canal was filled with gutta percha cones and a bioceramic root canal sealer. All procedures were performed with the aid of microscopic magnification. Clinical and radiographic evaluations at the 18-month follow-up visit showed that the treated tooth was asymptomatic, suggesting that the bioceramic reparative cement is effective for apexification., Competing Interests: No conflicts of interest reported.

Statement of Problem: Different techniques for retrieving cement-retained implant-supported prostheses have been described to minimize damage to the prostheses. Nevertheless, a classification of the described techniques remains ambiguous., Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review was to review and classify the described techniques for recording and locating the screw access hole in cement-retained implant-supported prostheses., Material and Methods: A bibliographic search was completed on MEDLINE/PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane databases. A manual search was also conducted. The articles that described or evaluated techniques for recording and locating the screw access hole of cement-retained implant-supported prostheses were included. Two investigators independently assessed the quality assessment of the studies using the Revised Cochrane risk of bias tool for randomized trials. A third examiner was consulted to resolve the lack of consensus., Results: A total of 30 articles were included. The different methods were classified according to whether the screw access hole location was registered before or after cementation. The precementation techniques were classified into 4 subgroups: identification marks, photographic records, digital files, and precementation screw access hole location guides. The postcementation techniques were subdivided into 2 subgroups: radiographic records and postcementation screw access hole location guides., Conclusions: Different techniques have been proposed to facilitate the location of the screw access hole in cement-retained implant-supported restorations. Although the evidence is scarce, studies seem to ascertain that some techniques, such as the use of drilling guides, orientation with cone beam computed tomography images, or holes made in the metal framework, can increase the retrievability of cement-retained implant-supported prostheses and decrease complications in the location of the screw access hole. Statement of Problem: Screwmentable prostheses were developed to combine the benefits of screw retention and cement retention. However, data are limited on the clinical performance of this type of prosthesis., Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review was to collect scientific evidence on screwmentable prostheses and evaluate their long-term clinical behavior., Material and Methods: An electronic search was conducted by 2 independent reviewers for articles published in scientific dental journals in English from 2004 to April 2020. The search strategy followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Inclusion criteria were scientific studies concerning the screwmentable type of prosthesis., Results: The search provided 494 records. Of these, 24 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. The included articles presented significant heterogeneity concerning the manufacturing process and the materials used. One randomized clinical trial, 2 prospective clinical studies, 14 in vitro studies, 3 protocol descriptions, 1 case series, and 3 case reports were included., Conclusions: Based on the systematic search of the literature, it is concluded that the screwmentable prosthesis combines advantages of both cement-retained and screw-retained restorations, including passive fit, retrievability, excess cement control, tissue-friendly emergence profile, and improved esthetics. Objective: To evaluate the adhesion of universal adhesive systems to the dentin of noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs) by comparing the etch-and-rinse and self-etch strategies through a systematic review and meta-analysis., Methods: Systematic electronic searches were performed by two independent reviewers into the following databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library until December of 2021. Only randomized clinical trials were selected, comparing etch-and-rinse and self-etch strategies and using universal adhesive systems in NCCLs. This systematic review was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines and registered into PROSPERO., Results: After the removal of duplicates, 170 articles were identified. In an initial screening of titles and abstracts, 146 records did not satisfy the inclusion criteria and were, therefore, excluded. Twenty-four studies were eligible for evaluation of the full text, and four were excluded after this step. Finally, 20 randomized clinical trials were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis., Conclusion: This systematic review and meta-analysis revealed that applying universal adhesive systems in the etch-and-rinse strategy could lead to better medium-term (>12 to 36 months) retention of NCCL restorations than the self-etch strategy, as well as resulting in lower percentages of marginal discoloration, marginal adaptation, and secondary caries. Purpose: To assess the fracture resistance of monolithic zirconia crowns cemented with different types of cement on cement-retained implant abutments., Materials and Methods: Forty implant analogs were positioned in acrylic resin blocks, and cement-retained straight implant abutments were fastened to the analogs. Crowns were designed with/without occlusal vent holes and produced from monolithic zirconia blocks by the CAD-CAM technique. The two crown types were divided into two groups and cemented with resin and zinc-polycarboxylate cement under 5 kg weight. A universal testing machine applied compressive forces to the crowns until fracture. Fracture resistance values were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and the independent samples t-test with statistical significance set at p < 0.05., Results: According to the two-way ANOVA results, although the crown design did not have a significant effect on fracture resistance (1417.65 ± 337.39 N, 1565.16 ± 517.12 N; crowns with and without vent holes, respectively), the main effect of the cement variable on the fracture resistance was significant. Zinc-polycarboxylate cement (1680.1 ± 375.23 N) showed higher fracture resistance than resin cement (1302.71 ± 420.64 N) in the crowns designed with vent holes (p < 0.005)., Conclusion: The use of cement-retained implant-supported monolithic zirconia crowns with an occlusal vent hole is safe, and zinc-polycarboxylate cement use may be an appropriate choice for cementation of these crowns., (© 2022 by the American College of Prosthodontists.)

Background: Opaque cements can be esthetically unfavorable and alternative translucent materials have been developed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the color interference of a new translucent cement compared with conventional materials, in association with interim restoration with different thickness and shades., Methods: Bis-acryl composite disks were prepared in 2 thicknesses (1.2 mm, 0.6 mm) and 3 shades (A3.5, A2, bleached) to simulate the restorations. Cementation over dentin disks was performed with 1 translucent cement (Provicol QM Aesthetic; VOCO), 2 conventional cements (Provicol; VOCO, Temp-Bond NE; Kerr Dental), and 1 transparent liquid (polyethylene glycol 400). The difference between the color of the specimens cemented with the transparent liquid and that of the specimens cemented with each cement was calculated (ΔEab). The data were analyzed using 3-way analysis of variance and Tukey tests (5%)., Results: Significant differences were observed for all factors and some interactions (P < .05). For Provicol QM Aesthetic, the shade and thickness did not influence the ΔEab. For Provicol and Temp-Bond NE, the lighter and thinner the specimen, the higher the ΔEab. Only Provicol QM Aesthetic had smaller means than the perceptibility threshold. Temp-Bond NE and Provicol had higher values than the acceptability threshold for some combinations., Conclusions: The highly translucent cement had less color interference than the conventional materials. The thickness and resin shade only affected the results for the opaque cements. The thinner specimens and the lighter shades had higher color interference., Practical Implications: The use of a more translucent cement can produce a smaller color interference on the esthetic outcome of interim restorations., (Copyright © 2023 American Dental Association. Oral lichen planus (OLP) and recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) are common chronic inflammatory conditions, manifesting as painful oral lesions that negatively affect patients' quality of life. Current treatment approaches are mainly palliative and often ineffective due to inadequate contact time of the therapeutic agent with the lesions. Here, we developed the Dental Tough Adhesive (DenTAl), a bioinspired adhesive patch with robust mechanical properties, capable of strong adhesion against diverse wet and dynamically moving intraoral tissues, and extended drug delivery of clobetasol-17-propionate, a first-line drug for treating OLP and RAS. DenTAl was found to have superior physical and adhesive properties compared to existing oral technologies, with ~2 to 100× adhesion to porcine keratinized gingiva and ~3 to 15× stretchability. Clobetasol-17-propionate incorporated into the DenTAl was released in a tunable sustained manner for at least 3 wk and demonstrated immunomodulatory capabilities in vitro , evidenced by reductions in several cytokines, including TNF-α, IL-6, IL-10, MCP-5, MIP-2, and TIMP-1. Our findings suggest that DenTAl may be a promising device for intraoral delivery of small-molecule drugs applicable to the management of painful oral lesions associated with chronic inflammatory conditions.

Objective: The objective of this study was to compare the effect of solvent in universal adhesives (UA) and the application of an extra layer of hydrophobic bonding resin on enamel shear bond strengths (SBS)., Methods and Materials: Crowns of 224 bovine mandibular incisors were embedded in acrylic resin, wet-polished up to 600-grit silicon carbide paper and assigned to 3 UAs with different solvents (n=32): ethanol-based UA (ADU, AdheSE Universal, Ivoclar Vivadent); isopropanol-based UA (PBU, Prime&Bond Universal, Dentsply Sirona); and acetone-based UA (OPT, OptiBond Universal, Kerr Co). The same UAs were also applied with an extra layer of a hydrophobic bonding resin (HLB, Heliobond, Ivoclar Vivadent): ADU + HLB; PBU + HLB; and OPT + HLB. HLB alone was used as control. Enamel was etched with 37.5% H3PO4 (Kerr Gel Etchant, Kerr Co) for 15 seconds, rinsed with water, and air dried. UAs were applied according to the respective manufacturer's instructions. After adhesive application, composite cylinders (Filtek Z250, 3M Oral Care) were built up and light-cured (40 seconds/increment, 40 J/cm2) keeping the light tip in contact with the mold. Specimens were stored in water for 24 hours (24H) or for 6 months (6M). A knife-edged metallic rod (Ø=2.8-mm semicircular notch) loaded the composite cylinders until fracture. Mode of failure was analyzed with optical microscopy (40×). Statistics included twoway analysis of variance (ANOVA; adhesive strategy and water storage) and Tukey honestly significant difference (HSD) post hoc test (α=95%)., Results: Mean enamel SBS ranged from 3.6 (±2.2) MPa (HLB/6M) to 24.7 (±7.1) MPa (ADU + HLB/6M). ANOVA revealed significant differences for adhesive strategy (p≤0.001) but no significant differences for water storage (p>0.05). All UAs resulted in similar mean enamel SBS with or without an extra layer of HLB at 24H. After 6M, only ADU resulted in higher enamel SBS when an extra layer of HLB was applied. All UAs resulted in higher mean enamel SBS than HLB (control). Most failures were adhesive exception for PBU/HLB/6M, which had mostly mixed failures., Conclusions: UAs resulted in statistically higher enamel SBS than the nonsolvated hydrophobic bonding resin (control), regardless of the solvent in their composition. Application of an extra layer of hydrophobic bonding resin over UAs did not improve mean enamel SBS for isopropanol- and acetone-based UAs but did improve mean enamel SBS for the ethanol-based UA after 6M. Introduction: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of a flash-free (FF) System on (1) the amount of plaque accumulation around the braces on buccal surfaces of the teeth, (2) the time required for the placement of brackets, including the clean-up of the flash, (3) the amount of adhesive left on the tooth after debonding, and (4) time required for adhesive remnant clean-up., Methods: Thirty-six patients (aged 19.96 ± 5.74 years) were randomly distributed to receive adhesive precoat (APC)-FF and APC-Plus ceramic brackets on the maxillary right or left anterior 6 teeth. Bonding and debonding time were measured per segment in milliseconds. A plaque revealer agent was applied to discolor the dental plaque, and a modified plaque accumulation index was used to evaluate the amount of plaque at 2 different time points. An adhesive residue index was used after the debonding., Results: The mean bonding times were 138.87 seconds (8332.47 milliseconds) and 77.82 seconds (4669.31 milliseconds) for APC-Plus and APC-FF, respectively. The difference was statistically significant (P ≤0.001). The difference between the mean debonding times was not statistically significant. A significant difference was found between the adhesive residue index scores of the 2 systems (P ≤0.001). There was no statistically significant difference between plaque accumulation scores at first- and second-time points for both adhesive systems. APC-Plus score (0.94 ± 0.98) was higher than the APC-FF score (0.50 ± 0.91) on the incisal side at the second time point (P ≤0.05)., Conclusions: FF adhesives can be a good alternative to reduce chair time in bonding appointments., (Copyright © 2022 American Association of Orthodontists. Statement of Problem: Adhesive resin cement has been the preferred choice for the placement of prosthetic restorations, but evidence-based studies supporting this selection are sparse., Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that restoration placement with the adhesive 4-methacryloxyethyl trimellitate anhydride/methyl methacrylate-tributylborane (4-META/MMA-TBB) resin cement is associated with better longevity of teeth than zinc phosphate cement up to 43 years., Materials and Methods: Study participants were individuals who had been visiting the clinic regularly for more than 20 years from their first visit between November 1970 and April 1985. The vital teeth with prosthetic restorations (N=454), including cast inlays, onlays, crowns, and fixed partial dentures, of 53 patients were assessed from dental charts and radiographs. Most of the bonding surfaces were precious metal alloy, excluding 4 restorations cemented with zinc phosphate and 6 ceramic crowns cemented with 4-META/MMA-TBB resin cement. The Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test (α=.05) were used to compare longevity between the 2 materials. Chi-squared tests (α=.001) were also used to examine the occurrence rates of events such as secondary caries, endodontic treatment, and the dislodgement of restorations affecting the longevity of the 2 cements., Results: Clinical review examination demonstrated that 55.4% of teeth retained with 4-META/MMA-TBB resin cement had been in service for 30 years compared with 43.5% of those retained with zinc phosphate cement, with a significant difference (P=.006). 4-META/MMA-TBB resin cement also demonstrated lower event occurrence rates than zinc phosphate cement for 3 assessed types of events (P<.001)., Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, 4-META/MMA-TBB resin adhesive cement demonstrated a higher survival rate than conventional zinc phosphate cement in service for 30 years with a lower occurrence of critical events., (Copyright © 2021 Editorial Council of the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry. Statement of Problem: Residual cement in the peri-implant sulcus may cause peri-implant mucositis, which can lead to peri-implantitis. Clinical studies comparing the role of the collar height of the definitive restoration and the type of cement used for luting the prosthesis in the amount of residual cement are lacking., Purpose: The purpose of this clinical study was to determine the volume of residual cement left undetected in the peri-implant sulcus by an implant prosthesis with 3 different collar heights and 3 luting cements., Material and Methods: Participants with single implants in the premolar region were divided into 3 groups of 10 according to the distance from the peri-implant soft tissue crest to the implant platform: group low collar (sulcus depth <2 mm), group medium collar (2-4 mm), and group high collar (>4 mm). A metal-ceramic crown with an occlusal opening was fabricated on a straight titanium abutment, which facilitated removal of the crown along with the abutment after cementation. The implant luting cements used were composite resin cement (RelyX U200), Type I glass ionomer cement (GC Gold Label 1), and zinc oxide noneugenol interim luting cement (RelyX Temp NE). The modified crown was cemented with 1 cement each during the impression, bisque evaluation, and definitive crown cementation appointments. The crown was retrieved, and the residual cement collected during each appointment. The measurements obtained were statistically analyzed with general linear model analysis followed by post hoc testing using the Bonferroni test (α=.05)., Results: Mean volume of the residual excess cement (mm 3 ) formed in group low collar was 0.33 ±0.17, 0.26 ±0.17, and 0.08 ±0.08 for subgroups Resin, GIC, and ZNE, respectively. In group medium collar, it was 1.18 ±0.31, 1.08 ±0.3, and 0.61 ±0.32; and in group high collar, it was 2.33 ±0.31, 2.1 ±0.74, and 1.31 ±0.56 for the same subgroup, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference in the formation of REC between the collar height groups (P<.001). Among the luting cements, zinc oxide noneugenol cement produced significantly lower residual cement compared with the other 2 cements, and there was no statistically significant difference between the glass ionomer and resin cements (P>.05)., Conclusions: The collar height of the definitive restoration and the type of luting cement play significant roles in the formation of residual cement in fixed implant-supported restorations., (Copyright © 2021 Editorial Council for the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry. Objectives: To determine the clinical performance of light-cured calcium silicate-based cement for direct or indirect pulp capping. The research question was as follows: in teeth with deep caries lesions, does the use of resin-modified calcium silicate-containing composites improve the radiological success and prevent irreversible pulpitis and pulpal necrosis compared with other pulp-capping agents?, Materials and Methods: The following databases were screened until September 2021: PubMed, Web of Science, Scielo, Scopus, Embase, and The Cochrane Library. Randomized clinical trials reporting the clinical evaluation of a resin-modified calcium silicate material as an agent for pulp therapy were included. Meta-analysis was performed using the Rev Manager v5.4.1 software. The risk difference and 95% confidence interval of the dichotomous outcome (restoration failure or success) were calculated for comparison., Results: Ten studies were considered for qualitative analysis and meta-analysis. Studies evaluating the performance of light-cured calcium silicate-based cement from 1 month to a maximum follow-up period of 36 months and comparing it with the performance of CaOH, mineral trioxide aggregate, or Biodentine were included. In the global analysis for direct pulp capping at 6-month follow-up, no statistical differences were observed between the experimental group using the light-cured calcium silicate-based cement and control group (P = .28). However, at 12-month follow-up, global analysis favored the control group (P < .001). For indirect pulp capping, at 6- and 24-month follow-ups, no statistically significant differences were observed between the experimental and control groups (P = .88; P = .21)., Conclusions: Light-cured calcium silicate-based cement showed a limited clinical performance as a direct pulp capping agent, especially when evaluated in the long term. Statement of Problem: The influence of silver nanoparticles on adhesive properties of Single Bond Universal (3M ESPE) and the antibacterial activity of silver nanoparticles-modified adhesives against Streptococcus mutans is unclear., Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of silver nanoparticles on the dentin bond strength of modified adhesives and the antibacterial activity against the cariogenic pathogen S. mutans., Material and Methods: Single Bond Universal adhesive was used as the control. Silver nanoparticles were added to adhesives at 0.05% and 0.1% (by weight) (experimental groups), and scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the uniformity of the modified adhesives. The Single Bond Universal adhesive and the modified adhesives were then used to prepare dentin-composite resin blocks. The microtensile bond strength and microleakage of the prepared dentin-composite resin blocks were determined with or without thermocycling. The colony-forming units (CFU) of S. mutans cultured with the adhesives were evaluated, and the microtensile bond strength and microleakage of each group were tested after treatment with S. mutans. The differences in the microtensile bond strength or CFU were analyzed by using the 2-way analysis of variance and independent sample t test. The differences in microleakage between the groups were evaluated by using the Mann-Whitney test (α=.05)., Results: Silver nanoparticle-modified adhesives exhibited uniform morphologies without agglomeration and exhibited a homogeneous adhesive layer in dentin-composite resin blocks. The microtensile bond strength and microleakage of the modified adhesives were similar to those of the control group, with or without thermocycling (P>.05). However, thermocycling reduced the bond strength significantly (P<.001). Self-etch adhesives incorporated with silver nanoparticles showed significant antibacterial activities after less than 6 months of aging treatment. The modified adhesives did not exhibit a decreased bond strength after S. mutans exposure (P>.05), while the control group exhibited a markedly decreased bond strength after S. mutans exposure (P<.05)., Conclusions: Silver nanoparticle-modified adhesives showed excellent antibacterial activities against S. mutans and resisted the destruction of dentin bond strength caused by S. mutans while not compromising the bonding properties of Single Bond Universal self-etch adhesives., (Copyright © 2022 The Authors. Objectives: The aim of this retrospective clinical study was to evaluate the survival and the occurrence of technical and biological complications in bi-layered zirconia-based (Zi) single crown and 3-unit fixed dental prostheses (FDPs). Also, the study aimed to analyze the effects of tooth vitality (vital versus non-vital), abutment location (anterior versus posterior), and luting cement (self-adhesive resin versus resin-reinforced glass ionomer) on clinical outcomes., Methods: A total of 147 prostheses (in 94 patients) placed by undergraduate dental students in a university dental center during the period 2015-2021 were examined clinically using modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) and California Dental Association (CDA) criteria. The mean duration of follow-up was 37 months (range, 6 - 63 months) for the single crowns (n = 77) and 25 months (range, 6 - 68 months) for the 3-unit FDPs (n = 70). Data were descriptively analyzed to determine the types and rates of complications based on USPHS and CDA criteria. The Kaplan-Meier survival estimation method was used to determine the cumulative survival and success rates of the prostheses (α=0.05). Differences in clinical outcomes (survival or failure) according to tooth vitality, luting cement, and location were statistically analyzed using cross-tabulations and Х 2 test (α=0.05)., Results: The Kaplan-Meier cumulative survival rate was estimated as 96% for the Zi 3-unit FDPs after 5.5 years, and 90% for the Zi single crowns after 4.8 years. The 5-year estimated success rate was 68% for both 3-unit FDPs and single crowns. Seven (9.1%) 77Zi single crowns and 70 2 (2.9%) Zi 3-unit FDPs were recorded as failures with occlusal roughness being the most commonly-observed complication (crowns: 4 [5.6%]; 3-unit FDPs: 8 [11.4%]). In terms of clinical outcomes, statistically significant differences were found between all included vital and non-vital teeth (p = .006), and cement types (p = .028). Taking single crowns alone, significant differences in clinical outcomes according to tooth vitality were noted (p = .036), but not for PFDPs. The location of the prostheses did not produce any significant differences in the clinical outcomes, for both prostheses types independently or combined (p > .05)., Conclusions: The estimated cumulative survival rates in this study for single crowns and 3-unit Zi FDPs concurred with the ranges reported in systematic reviews. Zi-based prostheses on vital teeth produced better clinical outcomes than those placed on non-vital teeth, and type of luting cement influenced the final clinical outcome., Clinical Significance: Zi crowns and 3-unit PFDPs fabricated using the specific CAD-CAM system used in the controlled environment of this study showed good clinical performance with minimal veneer porcelain chipping. Purpose: To investigate the potential of adding silver-nanoparticle-containing amorphous calcium phosphate microparticles as bioactive fillers into commercially available nonbioactive dental resin cement., Materials and Methods: Experimental cement was formulated by adding 7.5% silver-nanoparticle-containing amorphous calcium phosphate microparticles to Multilink Automix resin cement (Ivoclar Vivadent). The experimental cement was evaluated for shear bond strength (N = 11 per group) and demineralization/remineralization (N = 16 per group), with BioCem ® Universal BioActive cement (NuSmile) as the positive control and Multilink Automix cement as the negative control. One-way analysis of variance and post hoc tests were used to assess the significance of differences among or between the groups RESULTS: The addition of silver-nanoparticle-containing amorphous calcium phosphate microparticles at the level of 7.5% by weight into Multilink Automix did not have a statistically significant effect on the shear bond strength (p > 0.05), but statistically significantly increased the depth of remineralization on both dentin and enamel (p = 0.01 and p < 0.001, respectively) when compared to Multilink Automix alone. The experimental cement prepared in the present study was comparable to BioCem ® on the depths of remineralization on both dentin and enamel (p = 0.59 and p = 0.99, respectively)., Conclusion: When incorporated into nonbioactive commercial dental resin cements as bioactive fillers at the level of 7.5% by weight, silver-nanoparticle-containing amorphous calcium phosphate microparticles could provide remineralization potential without affecting the shear bond strength., (© 2021 by the American College of Prosthodontists.)

Introduction: This split-mouth randomized clinical trial aimed to evaluate the influence of dental enamel deproteinization with sodium hypochlorite on orthodontic accessories breakages using 2 orthodontic adhesives., Methods: Forty patients with indications for orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances were randomly divided into 2 groups according to the orthodontic adhesive used: Transbond XT (3M Unitek, Monrovia, Calif) (n = 20) and Orthocem (FGM Dental Products, Joinville, Santa Catarina, Brazil) (n = 20). A split-mouth trial was conducted in the maxillary teeth; the deproteinization process with 5% sodium hypochlorite was performed on the experimental side. The opposite side served as a control without deproteinization. The primary outcome was the number of orthodontic accessories breakages. The randomization was performed using the BioStat software (AnalystSoft Inc, Walnut, Calif). Single-blind was applied for patients. Orthodontic accessories were bonded according to the manufacturer's instructions. The accessories breakages were followed during the first 6 months of treatment. Intergroup comparisons were performed with t tests and 1 and 2-way analysis of variance., Results: Thirty-nine patients concluded the trial. The Transbond XT group comprised 20 patients (9 male, 11 female), with a mean age of 20.77 ± 6.44 years. The Orthocem group included 19 patients (9 male, 10 female), with a mean age of 23.14 ± 7.98 years. The application of sodium hypochlorite before bonding did not influence the number of orthodontic accessories breakages (P = 0.867). The type of adhesive used, associated or not with the deproteinization, did not affect the number of orthodontic accessories breakages (P = 0.929)., Conclusions: Enamel deproteinization with 5% sodium hypochlorite did not impact the number of orthodontic accessories breakages. Statement of Problem: Clinical studies comparing the occurrence and quality of residual cement between custom zirconia and custom titanium abutments with subgingival margins are scarce., Purpose: The purpose of this clinical study was to assess the difference in the amount of residual cement between custom zirconia and titanium abutments with a 1-mm subgingival margin., Material and Methods: Eighty participants were randomized to receive either a custom zirconia abutment with a bonded titanium insert or a custom titanium abutment with a 1-mm subgingival margin on a posterior bone-level implant. Monolithic lithium disilicate crowns with a screw-access hole were cemented to abutments randomly with either a resin-modified glass ionomer cement or a resin cement. After cementation, the crown-abutment assemblies were removed and photographed from the mesial, buccal, distal, and lingual of the specimen to record the residual cement. The length along the abutment margin of each aspect of the assembly was measured. The surface area of the residual cement (SA) and the surface area of the residual cement per unit length of margin (SA&#95;P) were calculated. Results for the groups were compared with the Fisher exact test, the Friedman test, and the Mann-Whitney U test (α=.05)., Results: The median (lower quartile, upper quartile) of SA and SA&#95;P for the custom zirconia abutment with a bonded titanium insert was 1.9 (0.5, 3.9) mm 2 and 0.086 (0.032, 0.02) mm 2 , respectively, and for the custom titanium abutment, the values were 2.9 (1.3, 5.1) mm 2 and 0.138 (0.062, 0.239) mm 2 , respectively. No significant difference was found between the custom zirconia abutments with bonded titanium inserts and titanium abutments for SA (P=.075) and SA&#95;P (P=.083) with the Mann-Whitney U test. Statement of Problem: Although the 2D analysis of prosthesis cementation space has been popular, its correlation with volumetric comparison (3D data) of cement space is unclear., Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the cement space in computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) crowns of different materials and correlate 2D measurements of cement space with their corresponding 3D values (volume of cement space) by using microcomputed tomography (μCT) analysis of regions of interest., Material and Methods: Ten molar crowns were milled in lithium disilicate (LD), resin nanoceramic (RN), and zirconia (Z) ceramics. Silicone replicas were produced and used as the analog cement layer and scanned with a desktop X-ray microfocus CT scanner. Twenty-eight slices were evaluated in 3 regions: marginal, axial, and occlusal (n=84 measurement points/specimen). After 3D reconstruction of the cement space, the volume was calculated. Data were statistically evaluated through 2-way ANOVA and Bonferroni test (α=.05). The Pearson correlation test was used to investigate the correlation between the 2D and 3D data., Results: The volumes of the occlusal (LD 10 ±1 mm 3 ; RN 9 ±1 mm 3 ) and axial regions (LD 9 ±2 mm 3 ; RN 8 ±1 mm 3 ) were significantly higher than the volume of the marginal region for LD and RN specimens (LD 6 ±2 mm 3 ; RN 4 ±1 mm 3 ) (both P<.001). For the Z group, the axial region had the highest volume (19 ±2 mm 3 ), followed by the volumes of the occlusal (15 ±1 mm 3 ) and marginal regions (12 ±1 mm 3 ). The Pearson correlation test determined a moderate positive correlation of the marginal area (r=0.606, P<.001) and of the axial region (r=0.588, P<.001). However, a moderate negative correlation was found between volume and thickness of the occlusal area (r=-0.437, P=.016)., Conclusions: Z showed more volume of cement space, as well as thicker cement space than LD and RN. The μCT analysis is an efficient method of analyzing cement thickness and volume in ceramic crowns at the selected regions of interest. Objective: To evaluate the clinical success of posterior composite restorations repaired with and without silane application for up to 2 years., Materials and Method: In this retrospective study, patient record files acquired from the 40 patients who were treated due to needing repair for two class II defective composite restorations and visited the clinical practice for regular check-up visits were used. In the experimental group, the defective restorations were repaired using a silane coupling agent (Porcelain Primer), a universal adhesive (G-Premio Bond), and a microhybrid resin composite (Charisma Smart). In the control group, the restorations were repaired using the universal adhesive and the resin composite without silane coupling agent application. The repaired restorations were blindly assessed by two calibrated examiners using modified USPHS criteria at baseline, 6 months, 1, and 2 years. The data were analyzed using non-parametric tests (p = 0.05)., Results: After 2 years, 80 repaired class II restorations were evaluated. No restoration of either the control or silane-treated group failed. After 2 years, there were no statistically significant differences between the experimental and control groups (p > 0.05). The differences in surface roughness were observed in each group over time (p < 0.05). There were no variations in other criteria over time (p > 0.05)., Conclusion: There was no significant effect of the silane coupling agent on restoration repair survival., Clinical Relevance: The repair of localized defects of the posterior composite restorations either with or without silane application is a conservative treatment option that may increase the clinical success of these restorations., (© 2022. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a new irrigant solution on the post space cleaning and the adhesive resistance of fiber posts., Methods and Materials: Eighty roots of bovine teeth were randomly allocated into eight groups (n=10 for each group). Evaluations were performed in two different time points for each irrigant. The irrigants included a control group with distilled water (DW), 2.5% NaOCl and 17% EDTA (SH), 1% peracetic acid (PA), and 5% boric acid and 1% citric acid (EX). The time points were 24 hours (I-immediate) and 6 months (D-delayed). The push-out test was performed using a universal testing machine with a 5 kN load cell operating at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/minute. The dentinal cementation system was analyzed using a laser confocal microscope (LSM5, Zeiss, Jena, Germany), and incidence of residue on radicular dentin was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The incidence of residue was evaluated by the Kruskal-Wallis test and push-out bond strength and dentin penetrability were evaluated via a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey tests (α=0.05)., Results: The EX irrigation protocol demonstrated the lowest incidence of residue on the dentin surface (p<0.05), independently of the evaluated third. In the cervical and the middle post thirds, EXI, EXD, SHI, and SHD groups exhibited similar push-out bond strength values (p>0.05). EXI, EXD, PAI, and PAD exhibited the greatest dentinal penetrability of the cementation system in all the post thirds (p<0.05)., Conclusions: A solution containing 5% boric acid and 1% citric acid can be a promising irrigant for radicular post space cleaning. Purpose: The first objective was to determine if the dual-curing of self-adhesive resin cement (SAC) with reduced light penetrating through zirconia had an effect on interfacial gap of zirconia restorations. The second purpose was to examine whether pretreatment methods for universal adhesive affected interfacial gap. The last aim was to compare the microhardness of SAC polymerized under different zirconia thicknesses., Methods and Materials: This study evaluated self-adhesive resin cement (RelyX U200, 3M ESPE) after different pretreatment with universal adhesive (Single Bond Universal, 3M ESPE) under different polymerization conditions. CAD/CAM inlay cavities were prepared on extracted third molars. Translucent zirconia restorations were milled using Katana UTML (Kuraray). The teeth were divided into three groups: Groups I, II, and III in which the restoration thicknesses were 1, 2, and 3 mm. Each Group had three subgroups according to different pretreatment methods. For subgroup-1, no pretreatment was done on the prepared cavity. For subgroup-2, universal adhesive was applied and light-cured before cement placement (precure method). For subgroup-3, universal adhesive was applied; however, light-curing was done after cement placement (cocure method). After thermo-cycling, the interfacial gap at the restoration-tooth interface was investigated using swept-source optical coherence tomography imaging. Finally, microhardness was measured for SAC under different zirconia thicknesses. For statistical analysis, the interfacial gap was analyzed using two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) to test the effect of cavity depth and pretreatment. In terms of each cavity depth and pretreatment, the interfacial gap was compared using one-way ANOVA and Scheffe's test. One-way ANOVA was also performed for comparison of the Vickers hardness results., Results: Different thicknesses of the restoration resulted in differences in interfacial gaps except between the precure method of Groups I and II (p<0.05). The effect of universal adhesive pretreatment was different depending on the restoration thickness with exceptions in Groups I and III (p<0.05). Vickers hardness number decreased as the low radiant exposure of light was applied (p<0.05)., Conclusion: Interfacial gap of zirconia restorations can differ depending on the material thickness, pretreatment, and activation mode. Reduced light intensity penetrating through zirconia may lead to higher interfacial gap percentage and lower microhardness of the self-adhesive resin cement. Limited research has been published evaluating the failure of zirconia crowns with less retentive tooth preparations. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of axial wall height (AWH) and cement type on the fracture load of cubic phase-containing zirconia crowns. Standardized crown preparations with an AWH of 0, 2, or 4 mm (n = 10) were made in 90 extracted human maxillary third molars. The preparations were scanned, and crown restorations were designed. Cubic phase-containing zirconia crowns were milled and cemented with a resin-modified glass ionomer cement, a self-adhesive resin cement, or an adhesive resin cement. The specimens were subjected to thermocycling and cyclic loading. Each crown specimen was positioned in a universal testing machine so that the long axis of the tooth was at a 60° angle to the testing fixture and loaded until failure using a stainless steel rod resting on the buccal incline of the palatal cusp. Data were found to have a nonnormal distribution and were analyzed with Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests (α = 0.05). Statistically significant differences in the median fracture loads of the groups were found based on both AWH and cement type (P < 0.05). Regardless of cement type, the median fracture loads were significantly lower in the 0-mm AWH groups than in the 2-mm and 4-mm AWH groups, which were not significantly different from each other. Compared to the other cement types, adhesive resin cement resulted in a significantly greater median fracture load when the AWH was 0 mm. Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate the long-term outcome of 16 permanent maxillary central incisors with nonvital pulps and open apices treated with apexification and corono-radicular adhesive restorations, within a follow-up span of 5 to 22 years., Methods: Fourteen patients providing a total of 16 teeth treated with mineral trioxide aggregate (n = 12), Biodentine (n = 3), or β-tricalcium phosphate (n = 1) apical barrier and corono-radicular restoration, with or without fiberglass post, were included. Clinical and radiographic criteria were defined for assessment at recall. Restoration and periapical tissue status evaluation were performed according to FDI World Dental Federation's esthetic, functional, and biological criteria and Ørstavik Periapical Index (PAI). Outcome was dichotomized as "healed" (PAI ≤ 2, asymptomatic with absence of signs of infection) or "not healed" (PAI ≥ 3, presence of clinical signs and/or symptoms)., Results: Fourteen of 24 patients were available for the present study (recall rate = 58%). Within a follow-up of 5 to 22 years, 10 (62.5%) teeth were considered "healed," fulfilling both strict clinical and radiographic success criteria. Only 1 tooth was missing due to root resorption and 1 patient was presenting with clinical signs and symptoms at recall, resulting in a survival rate of 93.8%., Conclusions: Adhesive corono-radicular restoration in nonvital permanent immature teeth treated with apexification allows for favorable long-term outcomes, by ensuring structural reinforcement and coronal microleakage prevention. Teeth sustaining a substantial loss of coronal structure may require post/core placement. In the case of failure, this endodontic-restorative combination ensured teeth survival until growth phase conclusion, thus allowing for proper prosthetic rehabilitation approaches., (Copyright © 2022 American Association of Endodontists. Background: Grossman described the ideal properties of root canal sealers. The International Organization for Standardization and American National Standards Institute and American Dental Association have codified some of his requirements in ISO 6876 and ANSI/ADA 57, respectively. In this narrative review, the authors combined the ideal Grossman properties and requirements of these standards, emphasizing the newer tricalcium silicate cement sealers. This chemical matrix for such sealers was developed on the basis of the success of bioactive mineral trioxide aggregate-type (tricalcium silicate cement) materials for enhanced sealing and bioactivity., Methods: The authors searched the internet and databases using Medical Subject Heading terms and then conducted a narrative review of those articles involving the tricalcium silicate cement endodontic sealers., Results: Ninety-four articles were identified that discussed tricalcium silicate cement sealers. Tricalcium silicate cement sealers are partially antimicrobial and have bioactivity, which may presage improved biological sealing of the root canal system. Most other properties of tricalcium silicate cement sealers are comparable with traditional root canal sealers., Conclusions: Within the limitations of this review, tricalcium silicate cement endodontic sealers met many of the criteria for ideal properties, such as placement, antimicrobial properties, and bioactivity, but limitations were noted in solubility, dimensional stability (shrinkage and expansion), and retrievability., Practical Implications: Tricalcium silicate-based cements have been commercialized as bioactive, bioceramic endodontic sealers. Warm, cold, and single-cone obturation techniques are usable, depending on the commercial product. Objectives: To evaluate the clinical performance of a new dual-cure universal adhesive system (Futurabond U, Voco) when applied using different application strategies in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) after 36 months., Material and Methods: Futurabond U was applied in NCCLs of 50 subjects using four adhesion strategies (n = 50 restorations per group): only self-etch (SEE); selective enamel etching + self-etch (SET); etch-and-rinse with dry dentin (ERDry); and etch-and-rinse with wet dentin (ERWet). All cavities were restored using Admira Fusion composite resin (Voco). Restorations were evaluated after 36 months using the World Federation criteria (FDI) and the modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria., Results: The after 36-month retention rates were 87% (75-92%) for SEE, 94% (83-98%) for SET, 91% (80-97%) for ERDry, and 94% (83-98%) for ERWet. Forty-three restorations were considered to have minor discrepancies in marginal adaptation at the 36-month recall (18 for SEE, 12 for SET, 7 for ERDry, and 6 for ERWet; p > 0.05). One restoration was detected as a minor marginal discoloration at the 36-month recall (1 for SET; p > 0.05). No restorations showed postoperative sensitivity and caries recurrence at 36 months., Conclusion: The clinical performance of the Futurabond U did not depend on the employed bonding strategy, and it was considered reliable after 36 months of clinical evaluation. However, greater marginal discrepancy was observed in the self-etch groups., Clinical Relevance: NCCLs restorations using a dual-cure universal adhesive in self-etch and etch-and-rinse modes showed satisfactory clinical performance after 36 months., (Copyright © 2022. This study investigated the fatigue failure load of simplified monolithic yttria partially stabilized zirconia polycrystal restorations cemented to a dentin-like substrate using different luting systems. Disc-shaped ceramic (Zenostar T, 10 mm Ø × 0.7 mm thick) and dentin-like substrate (10 mm Ø × 2.8 mm thick) were produced and randomly allocated into eight groups, without or with thermocycling (TC=5-55°C/12,000×): "cement" (RelyX Luting 2 - glass ionomer cement [Ion], [Ion/TC]; RelyX U200 - self-adhesive resin cement [Self], [Self/TC]; Single Bond Universal+RelyX Ultimate - MDP-containing adhesive + resin cement [MDPAD + RC], [MDP-AD + RC/TC]; ED Primer II+Panavia F 2.0 - Primer + MDP-containing resin cement [PR + MDP-RC], [PR + MDP-RC/TC])). Each luting system was used as recommended by the manufacturer. Staircase methodology (20 Hz; 250,000 cycles) was applied for obtaining the fatigue failure loads. Fractographic characteristics were also assessed. At baseline, the Ion group presented the lowest fatigue load, although it was statistically similar to the Self group. The resin-based cement systems presented the highest fatigue performance, with the Ion group being only statistically equal to the Self group. Thermocycling influenced the groups differently. After aging, the MDP-AD + RC presented the highest mean, followed by the PR + MDP-RC and Self groups, while the Ion group had the lowest mean. Fractographic analysis depicted all failures as radial cracks starting at the zirconia intaglio surface. The luting system with MDP-containing adhesive applied prior to the resin cement presented the highest fatigue failure load after aging, presenting the best predictability of stable performance. Objectives: The present study evaluated the influence of a flowable resin layer on bond strength between resin cement and a universal adhesive applied using an immediate dentin sealing (IDS) technique., Methods and Materials: Coronary portions of bovine teeth were randomly divided into six groups (n=15). In the IDS.U group, the exposed dentin was immediately sealed with the Single Bond Universal adhesive (3M ESPE) following the self-etching protocol. In the IDS.UF group, a layer of Filtek Z350 (3M ESPE) flow resin was applied over the universal adhesive. In the DDS (control) group, the dentin was kept "fresh" and delayed dentin sealing was performed. After 24 hours in distilled water at 37°C, dentin surfaces were treated with pumice, phosphoric acid, and the application of the universal adhesive in the IDS.U and IDS. UF groups. The DDS group was treated with pumice and the universal adhesive was applied. The samples received cylinders of resin cement Rely X Ultimate (3M ESPE) made with the aid of starch tubes of 0.96 mm in diameter and 2 mm in length. They were submitted to the microshear bond strength test (μSBS) at 0.5 mm/min, after 24 hours (T1) and 3 months (T2). The fracture areas were evaluated qualitatively using a DSM 300 microscope (KOZO) with 45× magnification and classified as: adhesive, cohesive in cement, cohesive in dentin, or mixed. Samples were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The data were compared statistically between groups using the Kruskal-Wallis test, and intra-groups using the Mann-Whitney test (α=0.05)., Results: There were no significant differences between groups for the bond strength values (p>0.05). The IDS.UF group showed higher values at 3 months, when compared to the values of 24 hours (p<0.001). All groups showed a predominance of adhesive fracture (86.7% to 100%). SEM showed dentinal tubules exposed in the IDS.U and DDS groups; in the IDS.UF group, the tubules were completely sealed., Conclusions: The flow resin can be used on the adhesive when using the IDS technique because it increased the bond strength values after 3 months and promoted effective sealing of the dentinal tubules., (©Operative Dentistry, 2022.)

Background: This study aimed to investigate the effect of enamel-surface modifications on the shear bond strength between ceramic brackets bonded using different adhesive materials and the enamel surface and to identify the most suitable clinical adhesive and bonding method. Whether the non-acid-etching treatment met the clinical bond strength was also determined., Methods: A total of 108 extracted premolars were divided into nine groups (n = 12) based on the different enamel-surface modification techniques (acid etching, deproteinization, and wetting). Group 1 was bonded with Transbond™ XT adhesive, whereas groups 2-9 were bonded with resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC). The treatment methods for each group were as follows: groups 1 and 2, acid etching; group 3, acid etching and wetting; group 4, acid etching and deproteinization; group 5, acid etching, deproteinization, and wetting; group 6, deproteinization; group 7, deproteinization and wetting; group 8, without treatment; and group 9, wetting. The samples' shear bond strength was measured using an universal testing machine. Adhesive remnant index (ARI) was examined using a stereomicroscope. The enamel-surface morphology was observed with a scanning electron microscope. One-way ANOVA with Tukey's post-hoc test and chi-square test were used for statistical analysis, and p < 0.05 and α = 0.05 were considered statistically significant., Results: The ARIs of groups 1-5 and 6-9 were statistically significant (p = 0.000). The enamel surface of groups 1-5 was demineralized, and only a tiny amount of protein remained in groups 7 and 8, whereas a thick layer of protein remained in groups 8 and 9., Conclusions: RMGIC adhesive did not damage the enamel surface and achieved the required clinical bond strength. The enamel surface was better treated with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite preferably under non-acid-etching conditions., (© 2022. The Author(s).)
