Experimental studies of the dynamics of shear flow and turbulence spreading at the edge of tokamak plasmas are reported. Scans of line-averaged density and plasma current are carried out while approaching the Greenwald density limit on the J-TEXT tokamak. In all scans, when the Greenwald fraction f G = n ¯ / n G = n ¯ / ( I p / π a 2 ) increases, a common feature of enhanced turbulence spreading and edge cooling is found. The result suggests that turbulence spreading is a good indicator of edge cooling, indeed better than turbulent particle transport is. The normalized turbulence spreading power increases significantly when the normalized E × B shearing rate decreases. This indicates that turbulence spreading becomes prominent when the shearing rate is weaker than the turbulence scattering rate. The asymmetry between positive/negative (blobs/holes) spreading events, turbulence spreading power and shear flow are discussed. These results elucidate the important effects of interaction between shear flow and turbulence spreading on plasma edge cooling.

As it turns out, both isotope scaling and density limits are phenomena closely linked to fluid closure. The necessity to include ion viscosity arises for both phenomena. Thus, we have added ion viscosity to our model. The experimental isotope scaling has been successfully recovered in our fluid model through parameter scans. Although ion viscosity typically exerts a small effect, the density limit is manifested by increasing the density by approximately tenfold from the typical experimental density. In our case, this increase originates from the density in the Cyclone base case. Notably, these phenomena would not manifest with a gyro-Landau fluid closure. The isotope scaling is nullified by the addition of a gyro-Landau term, while the density limit results from permitting ion viscosity to become comparable to the gyro-Landau term. The mechanism of zonal flows, demonstrated analytically for the Dimits upshift, yields insights into the isotope scaling observed in experiments. In our approach, ion viscosity is introduced in place of the Landau fluid resonances found in some fluid models. This implies that the mechanism of isotope scaling operates at the level of fluid closure in connection with the generation of zonal flows. The strength of zonal flows in our model has been verified, particularly in connection with the successful simulation of the nonlinear Dimits shift. Consequently, a role is played by our approach in the temperature perturbation part of the Reynolds stress.

Electric field profile structure-especially its shear-is a natural order parameter for the edge plasma, and characterizes confinement regimes ranging from the H-mode (Wagner et al. 1982 Phys. Rev. Lett. 49, 1408-1412 (doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.49.1408)) to the density limit (DL) (Greenwald et al. 1988 Nucl. Fusion 28, 2199-2207 (doi:10.1088/0029-5515/28/12/009)). The theoretical developments and lessons learned during 40 years of H-mode studies (Connor & Wilson 1999 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 42, R1-R74 (doi:10.1088/0741-3335/42/1/201); Wagner 2007 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 49, B1-B33 (doi:10.1088/0741-3335/49/12b/s01)) are applied to the shear layer collapse paradigm (Hong et al. 2017 Nucl. Fusion 58, 016041 (doi:10.1088/1741-4326/aa9626)) for the onset of DL phenomena. Results from recent experiments on edge shear layers and DL phenomenology are summarized and discussed in the light of L [Formula: see text] H transition physics. The theory of shear layer collapse is then developed. We demonstrate that shear layer physics captures both the well known current (Greenwald) scaling of the DL (Greenwald 2002 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 44, R27-R53 (doi:10.1088/0741-3335/44/8/201); Greenwald et al. 2014 Phys. Plasmas 21, 110501 (doi:10.1063/1.4901920)), as well as the emerging power scaling (Zanca, Sattin, JET Contributors 2019 Nucl. Fusion 59, 126011 (doi:10.1088/1741-4326/ab3b31)). The derivation of the power scaling theory exploits an existing model, originally developed for the L [Formula: see text] H transition (Diamond, Liang, Carreras, Terry 1994 Phys. Rev. Lett. 72, 2565-2568 (doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.72.2565); Kim & Diamond 2003 Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 185006 (doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.90.185006)). We describe the enhanced particle transport events that occur following shear layer collapse. Open problems and future directions are discussed. Abstract Collapse of the edge flow shear as the line-averaged density approaches the Greenwald density limit has been observed as a precursor to the enhanced edge particle flux characteristic of proximity to the density limit regime. Here, we report the use of a biased electrode to sustain the edge shear layer in high density discharges, in which the shear layer would otherwise collapse. A stable increase in line-averaged density is observed along with a strong increase in edge density. These experiments were carried out on the J-TEXT tokamak. The Reynolds stress at the edge is enhanced, and the zonal flow sustained, while density perturbation levels, the flux of turbulence internal energy (i.e., turbulence spreading), and particle and heat flux all decrease significantly. Electron adiabaticity increases, and bias voltage modulation experiments show that an increase in the edge shear leads the increase in adiabaticity. These results suggest that external edge E × B flow shear drive may be of interest for sustaining edge plasma states at high density, and support the hypothesis that collapse of the edge shear layer triggers the onset of the strong transport and turbulence characteristic of the density limit regime.

Enhanced particle transport events are discovered and analyzed as the density limit of the J-TEXT tokamak is approached. Edge shear layer collapse is observed and the ratio of Reynolds power to turbulence production decreases. Simultaneously, the divergence of turbulence internal energy flux (i.e. turbulence spreading) increases, indicating that shear layer collapse triggers an outward spreading event. Studies of correlations show that the enhanced particle transport events are quasi-coherent, and manifested primarily in density fluctuations which exhibit positive skewness. Electron adiabaticity emerges as the critical parameter which signals transport event onset. For α < 0.35 as density approaches the Greenwald density, both turbulence spreading and density fluctuations rise rapidly. Taken together, these results elucidate the connections between edge shear layer, density fluctuations, particle transport events, turbulence spreading and plasma edge cooling as the density limit is approached.

The J-TEXT capability is enhanced compared to two years ago with several upgrades of its diagnostics and the increase of electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) power to 1 MW. With the application of electron cyclotron wave (ECW), the ECW assisted plasma startup is achieved; the tearing mode is suppressed; the toroidal injection of 300 kW ECW drives around 24 kA current; fast electrons are generated with toroidal injected ECW and the runaway current conversion efficiency increases with ECRH power. The mode coupling between 2/1 and 3/1 modes are extensively studied. The coupled 2/1 and 3/1 modes usually lead to major disruption. Their coupling can be either suppressed or avoided by external resonant magnetic perturbation fields and hence avoids the major disruption. It is also found that the 2/1 threshold of external field is significantly reduced by a pre-excited 3/1 mode, which can be either a locked island or an external kink mode. The disruption control is studied by developing prediction methods capable of cross tokamak application and by new mitigation methods, such as the biased electrode or electromagnetic pellet injector. The high-density operation and related disruptions are studied from various aspects. Approaching the density limit, the collapse of the edge shear layer is observed and such collapse can be prevented by applying edge biasing, leading to an increased density limit. The density limit is also observed to increase, if the plasma is operated in the poloidal divertor configuration or the plasma purity is increased by increasing the pre-filled gas pressure or ECRH power during the start-up phase.

Edge shear flow and its effect on regulating turbulent transport have long been suspected to play an important role in plasmas operating near the Greenwald density limit n G. In this study, equilibrium profiles as well as the turbulent particle flux and Reynolds stress across the separatrix in the HL-2A tokamak are examined as is approached in ohmic L-mode discharges. As the normalized line-averaged density n/ngis raised, the shearing rate of the mean poloidal flow ωshdrops, and the turbulent drive for the low-frequency zonal flow (the Reynolds power PRe) collapses. Correspondingly, the turbulent particle transport increases drastically with increasing collision rates. The geodesic acoustic modes (GAMs) gain more energy from the ambient turbulence at higher densities, but have smaller shearing rate than low-frequency zonal flows. The increased density also introduces decreased adiabaticity which not only enhances the particle transport but is also related to reduction in the eddy-tilting and the Reynolds power. Both effects may lead to cooling of edge plasmas and therefore the onset of MHD instabilities that limit the plasma density.

The L-mode density limit in ASDEX Upgrade is investigated with focus on the scrape-off layer. We observe a chain of events that involves the collapse of the E×B outer shear layer (just outside the separatrix), widening of the electron pressure fall-off length, outer divertor detachment, density shoulder formation, reduction and flattening of the parallel Mach number, and enhanced turbulent cross-field transport. The latter effect was associated with higher amplitude density fluctuations at low frequencies, where the turbulent cross-phase between density and velocity fluctuations pointing radially outward was favourable.

This paper introduces the concept of plasma-wall self-organization (PWSO) in magnetic fusion. The basic idea is the existence of a time delay in the feedback loop relating radiation and impurity production on divertor plates. Both a zero and a one-dimensional description of PWSO are provided. They lead to an iterative equation whose equilibrium fixed point is unstable above some threshold. This threshold corresponds to a radiative density limit, which can be reached for a ratio of total radiated power to total input power as low as 1/2. When detachment develops and physical sputtering dominates, this limit is progressively pushed to very high values if the radiation of non-plate impurities stays low. Therefore, PWSO comes with two basins for this organization: the usual one with a density limit, and a new one with density freedom, in particular for machines using high-Z materials. Two basins of attraction of PWSO are shown to exist for the tokamak during start-up, with a high density one leading to this freedom. This basin might be reached by a proper tailoring of ECRH assisted ohmic start-up in present middle-size tokamaks, mimicking present stellarator start-up. In view of the impressive tokamak DEMO wall load challenge, it is worth considering and checking this possibility, which comes with that of more margins for ITER and of smaller reactors. A recently developed plasma-wall self-organization model (Escande et al 2022 Nucl. Fusion 62 026001) predicts a significantly enhanced density limit, which may be attainable in tokamaks with ECRH-assisted Ohmic start-up and sufficiently high initial neutral density. Experiments have been conducted on J-TEXT to validate such a density limit scenario based on this model. Experimental results demonstrate that increasing the pre-filled gas pressure or ECRH power during the start-up phase can help effectively enhance plasma purity and raise the density limit at the flat-top phase. The experimental data shows that density limit increases by a ratio $0.76/0.6 \approx 1.27$ for a decrease by a factor $0.13/0.33 \approx 0.4$ in $\text{C}_\text{III}$ radiation.

A predictor model of radiative collapse of stellarator-heliotron plasmas has been developed by means of a machine learning technique and the feature of radiative collapse has been extracted with sparse modeling. The dataset used for training the model is constructed based on density ramp-up experiments in the Large Helical Device. As a result of feature extraction, the line averaged electron density, visible line emissions of CIV and OV, and the electron temperature at the edge have been selected as key parameters of radiative collapse. The likelihood of occurrence of radiative collapse has been quantified by using these parameters and this likelihood has been assessed in terms of predicting capability of the occurrence of radiative collapse. The collapse likelihood also implies the underlying physics of radiative collapse, therefore, the knowledge obtained by this data-driven study is expected to facilitate elucidation of the physics of the radiative collapse. In validation with discharges outside of the dataset, the predictor based on the likelihood has predicted over 85% of radiative collapse about 100 ms prior to this event on average while about 5% of stable discharges have been detected falsely as collapse discharges. The problem of density limit and thermal disruption is one of the most important in ITER project. Different reasons for the disruption discuss now. At least 3% of disruptions are produced by the high level of impurity radiation from the edge [P.C. De Vries et al., Nucl. Fusion 51, 053018 (2011)]. Two reasons of the thermal disruption have been discussed earlier using simplified radiation model, the equilibrium loss [J.F. Drake, Phys. Fluids 30, 2429 (1987)], and radiation instability of the mode m = 0, n = 0 [M.Z. Tokar, Phys. Plasmas 7, 2432 (2000)]. Using the simplified model M.Z. Tokar founds two solutions. One of them is stable, the other is unstable. It is shown in the present paper that the unstable solution appears if the plasma density exceeds the critical value. The latter is found as a function of discharge parameters. It is shown also that the stable regime exists for realistic discharge parameters independently of plasma density. These regimes didn't investigated by M.Z. Tokar. Also, more adequate radiation models are discussed including charge-exchange. Abstract: A new set of actively cooled toroidal double-ring graphite limiters has been developed in HT-7 superconducting tokamak for long pulse operation. Significant progress of long pulse operation with the graphite limiter is achieved in HT-7. The operation parameter space is expanded largely, and the edge recycling, plasma density and impurity can be easily handled. The extension of operational region and density behavior with graphite (C) limiters have been studied in this paper. Under the same injected power, the critical density of MARFE onset with the new C limiter is much higher than the previous Mo limiter. A moveable graphite limiter has been developed in order to investigate the local recycling and density limit behavior in HT-7 tokamak, which shows that the recycling is low while plasma is shifted outwards, is high for inwards shift.
