Abstract

ChatGPT, a language-learning model chatbot, has garnered considerable attention for its ability to respond to users’ questions. Using data from 14 countries and 186 institutions, we compare ChatGPT and student performance for 28,085 questions from accounting assessments and textbook test banks. As of January 2023, ChatGPT provides correct answers for 56.5 percent of questions and partially correct answers for an additional 9.4 percent of questions. When considering point values for questions, students significantly outperform ChatGPT with a 76.7 percent average on assessments compared to 47.5 percent for ChatGPT if no partial credit is awarded and 56.5 percent if partial credit is awarded. Still, ChatGPT performs better than the student average for 15.8 percent of assessments when we include partial credit. We provide evidence of how ChatGPT performs on different question types, accounting topics, class levels, open/closed assessments, and test bank questions. We also discuss implications for accounting education and research.

Abstract

Current practice is to report and manage likely pathogenic/pathogenic variants in a given cancer susceptibility gene as though having equivalent penetrance, despite increasing evidence of intervariant variability in risk associations. Using existing variant interpretation approaches, largely based on full-penetrance models, variants in which reduced penetrance is suspected may be classified inconsistently and/or as variants of uncertain significance. We aimed to develop a national consensus approach for such variants within the Cancer Variant Interpretation Group UK (CanVIG-UK) multidisciplinary network.

25. Velocity-estimation improvements and migration/demigration using CRS with continuing deconvolution in the time domain

Abstract

To obtain an image of the earth's subsurface, time-imaging methods can be applied, as they are reasonably fast, less sensitive to velocity model errors than depth-imaging methods and, usually, easy to parallelize. A powerful tool for time-imaging consists of a series of prestack time-migrations and demigrations. We apply multi-parameter stacking techniques to obtain an initial time-migration velocity model. The velocity model building proposed here, is based on the kinematic wavefield attributes. A following refinement of the velocities uses a coherence filter which is based on a predetermined threshold, and followed by an interpolation and smoothing. Then, we perform a migration deconvolution to obtain the final time-migrated image. The migration deconvolution consists of one iteration of least-squares migration with an estimated Hessian. We estimate the Hessian by non-stationary matching filters, i.e., in a data-driven fashion. The model building uses the framework of the common-reflection-surface , and the migrated deconvolution is fully automated. Therefore, minimal user interaction is required to carry out both the velocity model refinement and the image update. We apply the suggested approaches of velocity refinement and migration deconvolution to complex synthetic and field data.

Abstract

Standard seismic acquisition and processing require appropriate source-receiver offsets. P-cable technology represents the opposite, namely, very short source-receiver offsets at the price of increased spatial and lateral resolution with a high-frequency source. To use this advantage, a processing flow excluding offset information is required. This aim can be achieved with a processing tuned to diffractions because point diffractions scatter the same information in offset and midpoint direction. Usually, diffractions are small amplitude events and a careful diffraction separation is required as a first step. We suggest the strategy to use a multiparameter stacking operator, e.g, common-reflection surface, and stack along the midpoint direction. The obtained kinematic wavefront attributes are used to calculate time-migration velocities. A diffractivity map serves as filter to refine the velocities. This strategy is applied to a 3D P-cable data set to obtain a time-migrated image.

Abstract

The diagnosis of primary ciliary dyskinesia is often confirmed with standard, albeit complex and expensive, tests. In many cases, however, the diagnosis remains difficult despite the array of sophisticated diagnostic tests. There is no "gold standard" reference test. Hence, a Task Force supported by the European Respiratory Society has developed this guideline to provide evidence-based recommendations on diagnostic testing, especially in light of new developments in such tests, and the need for robust diagnoses of patients who might enter randomised controlled trials of treatments. The guideline is based on pre-defined questions relevant for clinical care, a systematic review of the literature, and assessment of the evidence using the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation) approach. It focuses on clinical presentation, nasal nitric oxide, analysis of ciliary beat frequency and pattern by high-speed video-microscopy analysis, transmission electron microscopy, genotyping and immunofluorescence. It then used a modified Delphi survey to develop an algorithm for the use of diagnostic tests to definitively confirm and exclude the diagnosis of primary ciliary dyskinesia; and to provide advice when the diagnosis was not conclusive. Finally, this guideline proposes a set of quality criteria for future research on the validity of diagnostic methods for primary ciliary dyskinesia.

Abstract

Few sociomedical problems have aroused such ambivalent and alternating reactions of hilarity and distress as those associated with the consumption of alcoholic beverages in America. Cartoons depict the humor of intoxicated blunders and antics, while disrupted family life, emergency room crises, mutilated bodies, and smashed automobiles testify to the disastrous effects of excessive alcohol ingestion upon behavior. At the same time, society is outraged by the consumption of illicit drugs. Drugs have disturbed the domestic tranquility of middle-class society, extending even into high schools and grammar schools. The use of hard drugs-once confined to underprivileged and ignored ghetto residents-now sweeps across economic boundaries, social class distinctions, arbitrary age divisions, and ethnic and racial subpopulations. Drugs extract a payment from society far greater than society is willing to expend for the development of therapeutic approaches to rehabilitation.

Abstract

Background— Moderate, regular alcohol consumption is generally associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular events but data in patients with chronic heart failure are scarce. We evaluated the relations between wine consumption, health status, circulating biomarkers, and clinical outcomes in a large Italian population of patients with chronic heart failure enrolled in a multicenter clinical trial. Methods and Results— A brief questionnaire on dietary habits was administered at baseline to 6973 patients enrolled in the Gruppo Italiano per lo Studio della Sopravvivenza nell’Insufficienza Cardiaca-Heart Failure (GISSI-HF) trial. The relations between wine consumption, fatal and nonfatal clinical end points, quality of life, symptoms of depression, and circulating biomarkers of cardiac function and inflammation (in subsets of patients) were evaluated with simple and multivariable-adjusted statistical models. Almost 56% of the patients reported drinking at least 1 glass of wine per day. After adjustment, clinical outcomes were not significantly different in the predefined 4 groups of wine consumption. However, patients with more frequent wine consumption had a significantly better perception of health status (Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire score, adjusted P P =0.01), and lower plasma levels of biomarkers of vascular inflammation (osteoprotegerin and C-terminal proendothelin-1, adjusted P P =0.01) after adjusting for possible confounders. Conclusions— We show for the first time in a large cohort of patients with chronic heart failure that moderate wine consumption is associated with a better perceived and objective health status, lower prevalence of depression, and less vascular inflammation, but does not translate into more favorable clinical 4-year outcomes. 44. A new exposure metric for traffic-related air pollution? An analysis of determinants of hopanes in settled indoor house dust

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Exposure to traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) can adversely impact health but epidemiologic studies are limited in their abilities to assess long-term exposures and incorporate variability in indoor pollutant infiltration. METHODS: In order to examine settled house dust levels of hopanes, engine lubricating oil byproducts found in vehicle exhaust, as a novel TRAP exposure measure, dust samples were collected from 171 homes in five Canadian cities and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. To evaluate source contributions, the relative abundance of the highest concentration hopane monomer in house dust was compared to that in outdoor air. Geographic variables related to TRAP emissions and outdoor NO2 concentrations from city-specific TRAP land use regression (LUR) models were calculated at each georeferenced residence location and assessed as predictors of variability in dust hopanes. RESULTS: Hopanes relative abundance in house dust and ambient air were significantly correlated (Pearson's r=0.48, p<0.05), suggesting that dust hopanes likely result from traffic emissions. The proportion of variance in dust hopanes concentrations explained by LUR NO2 was less than 10% in Vancouver, Winnipeg and Toronto while the correlations in Edmonton and Windsor explained 20 to 40% of the variance. Modeling with household factors such as air conditioning and shoe removal along with geographic predictors related to TRAP generally increased the proportion of explained variability (10-80%) in measured indoor hopanes dust levels. CONCLUSIONS: Hopanes can consistently be detected in house dust and may be a useful tracer of TRAP exposure if determinants of their spatiotemporal variability are well-characterized, and when home-specific factors are considered.
