12. Event-Based Processing of Single Photon Avalanche Diode Sensors

Abstract

© 2001-2012 IEEE. Single Photon Avalanche Diode sensor arrays operating in direct time of flight mode can perform 3D imaging using pulsed lasers. Operating at high frame rates, SPAD imagers typically generate large volumes of noisy and largely redundant spatio-temporal data. This results in communication bottlenecks and unnecessary data processing. In this work, we propose a neuromorphic processing solution to this problem. By processing the spatio-temporal patterns generated by the SPADs in a local, event-based manner, the proposed 128\times 128 pixel sensor-processor system reduces the size of output data from the sensor by orders of magnitude while increasing the utility of the output data in the context of challenging recognition tasks. To test the proposed system, the first large scale complex SPAD imaging dataset is captured using an existing 32\times 32 pixel sensor. The generated dataset consists of 24000 recordings and involves high-speed view-invariant recognition of airplanes with background clutter. The frame-based SPAD imaging dataset is converted via several alternative methods into event-based data streams and processed using the proposed 125\times 125 receptive field neuromorphic processor as well as a range of feature extractor networks and pooling methods. The output of the proposed event generation methods are then processed by an event-based feature extraction and classification system implemented in FPGA hardware. The event-based processing methods are compared to processing the original frame-based dataset via frame-based but otherwise identical architectures. The results show the event-based methods are superior to the frame-based approach both in terms of classification accuracy and output data-rate.

The article addresses the development of highly sensitive, low-light and efficient, miniature single-photon sensor technology based on Single Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD) arrays, its integration on a Flash Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) system mounted on a custom built multi-rotor Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) platform, for the collection of real time imagery and performance of neuromorphic processing for accurate target detection and classification.

Although plant leaves of Indigofera oblongifolia have been used for the treatment of malaria in Saudi Arabian society, there is no laboratory-based evidence for the effectiveness and safety of the plant. This study therefore was designed to investigate the antimalarial and spleen protective activity of I. oblongifolia leaf extract (IOLE) in mice. Three doses (100, 200 and 300 mg/kg) of IOLE were used to treat mice infected with Plasmodium chabaudi-parasitized erythrocytes. The suppressive effect produced by the 100 mg/kg dose on parasitemia was highly significant compared to the infected nontreated group. This dose was also able to repair the change in the thickness of the mice spleen and significantly lower the number of apoptotic cells in the spleen. Moreover, I. oblongifolia also altered gene expression in the infected spleen. On day 7 postinfection, the mRNA expression of six genes – with immune response functions – was upregulated by more than twofold, while that of 24 other genes was downregulated. Among the differentially up- and downregulated genes under the effect of IOLE, we quantified the expression of Ccl8, Saa3, Cd209a, and Cd209b mRNAs. The expression data, determined by microarrays, were largely consistent with the expression analyses we performed with several arbitrarily selected genes using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Based on our results, I. oblongifolia exhibits antimalarial activity and could protect the spleen from P. chabaudi-induced injury. Abstract

Background: Despite the introduction of direct-acting antiviral agents for chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, peginterferon alfa/ribavirin remains relevant in many resource-constrained settings. The non-randomized GUARD-C cohort investigated baseline predictors of safety-related dose reductions or discontinuations (sr-RD) and their impact on sustained virologic response (SVR) in patients receiving peginterferon alfa/ribavirin in routine practice. Abstract

Malaria is a worldwide serious‐threatening infectious disease caused by Plasmodium and the parasite resistance to antimalarial drugs has confirmed a significant obstacle to novel therapeutic antimalarial drugs. In this article, we assessed the antioxidant and anti‐inflammatory activity of nanoparticles prepared from Indigofera oblongifolia extract (AgNPs) against the infection with Plasmodium chabaudi caused in mice spleen. AgNPs could significantly suppress the parasitaemia caused by the parasite to approximately 98% on day 7 postinfection with P. chabaudi and could improve the histopathological induced spleen damage. Also, AgNPs were able to increase the capsule thickness of the infected mice spleen. In addition, the AgNPs functioned as an antioxidant agent that affects the change in glutathione, nitric oxide and catalase levels in the spleen. Moreover spleen IL1β, IL‐6 and TNF‐α‐mRNA expression was regulated by AgNPs administration to the infected mice. These results indicated the anti‐oxidant and the anti‐inflammatory protective role of AgNPs against P. chabaudi‐induced spleen injury. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Bois noir (BN) phytoplasmas were associated with grapevine yellows diseases in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Delic and Lolic, 2010). The disease is widely to moderate distributed in vineyards with both domestic and imported grapevine cultivars. Molecular characterisation of selected strains of BN phytoplasmas detected in heavily BN-infected vineyards in was done to verify the presence of genetic variability. Thirty-five DNA samples of grapevines that were shown to be positive by PCR assays on the 16S rDNA were selected for the study. Polymorphisms were studied in the 16S rDNA, Tuf and ribosomal protein genes of the selected samples. Tuf1f/r, TufAYf/r, and TufINT1f/TufINT4r primer pairs were used in nested PCR for amplification of Tuf genes; RFLP analyses with HpaII showed the presence of the tuf type-b (VK-II) in all the tested samples. The BN infected samples were further amplified with rp/STOL primers and PCR products were digested with TaiI and SspI restriction enzymes. Finally 16S rDNA genes were amplified with P1/P7 primers in direct PCR and with R16F2n/R16R2 primers in nested PCR assays: both types of amplicons obtained were restricted with MboII and RsaI, MboII, Hpy188I enzymes, respectively. Restriction profiles obtained after RFLP analyses on 16S rDNA and ribosomal protein amplicons weren't uniform. Some samples showed profiles comparable with some of those recently published (Contaldo et al., 2009), while some of the profiles of other samples were totally different from any of those reported in literature. Therefore, polymorphism of these regions should be further studied to better understand BN epidemiology in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Abstract

A small-scale survey for blueberry viruses in Bosnia and Herzegovina was performed in 2018. A total of 20 samples from three locations were collected and analyzed for the presence of 11 viruses. ELISA assays were performed for blueberry scorch virus, blueberry shock virus, blueberry shoestring virus, blueberry leaf mottle virus, tobacco ringspot virus, and tomato ring spot virus. The samples were tested for blueberry red ringspot virus by PCR, and blueberry fruit drop associated virus, blueberry latent virus, blueberry mosaic associated virus, blueberry necrotic ring blotch virus, blueberry virus A, and blueberry leaf mottle virus by RT-PCR. The analyses confirmed the presence of BlLV in eight samples with no other virus detected in any of the samples.

Abstract

The study evaluates the effect of liming materials application in combination with NPK fertilizer and borax on macronutrient contents (nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg)), in an extremely acid soil and raspberry leaves and fruits during a two-year period. Liming increased soil pH, N mineral content, P, Ca and Mg soil content, while K content either increased (dolomite and borax application), or decreased (lime application). The N and P contents in raspberry leaves after liming increased significantly, but P content remained below the optimal values. Some treatments with lime caused a decrease in K content in leaves, while dolomite and borax application increased K content. Initially optimal Ca content in leaves increased significantly in the treatments with lime, but decreased after dolomite application. The Mg content in leaves increased after dolomite and borax application, but mainly remained below optimal values. Liming either did not alter or only slightly altered macronutrient contents in raspberry fruits.

Abstract

Levels of nitric oxide (NO) in the rats frontal cortex were continuously monitored before and after intraperitoneal administration of an antiepileptic drug-pentobarbital (20 and 40 mg/kg) or convulsant drug - pentylenetetrazol (50 mg/kg). Pentobarbital decreased the levels of NO in a dose dependent manner However, NO levels had a tendency to increase following the administration of pentylenetetrazol. It is suggested that central NO participates in the modulation of neuronal excitability, supporting the idea that NO is an important excitatory factor involved in the regulation of seizure susceptibility. Also, our results on anaesthetized rats suggests that endogenous NO may be involved in the mechanism of action of antiepileptic and analeptic drugs and this further suggest that NO levels in the human brain may decrease during antiepileptic therapy and increase during epileptic attacks or administration of excitatory drugs. The aim of the present study was to determine the possible role of NO levels in the brain during neuronal excitability and seizures. Rezultati ovih eksperimenta su ukazali da pentobarbital smanjuje nivo NO u frontalnom korteksu pacova, dok koncentracija NO ima tendeciju rasta nakon primene pentilenetetrazola. Osim toga, dokazano je da endogeni NO ima važnu ekscitatornu ulogu u centralnim mehanizmima nastanka epilepsije. Takođe, naši rezultati su ukazali da kod anestetisanih životinja endogeni nivo NO ima uticaja na dejstvo kako antikonvulzivnih, tako i prokonvulzivnih lekova. Nivo NO u mozgu pacova je bio snižen tokom terapije antiepilepticima, a povišen tokom epileptičkih napada ili primene lekova iz grupe centralnih stimulansa.

49. Internet health-information seekers in Croatia--who, what, and why?

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the characteristics of the Internet users in Croatia related to seeking health information, which information they seek, the reasons, and the outcomes of that information on them. We surveyed the users of the Internet health portal 'Cybermed', in spring 2003 and autumn 2004. Responses were collected from a pop-up questionnaire, which appeared at every website visit. There were 369 respondents in 2003 and 580 respondents in 2004. Most respondents were women (82% in 2003 and 80% in 2004). While more than half of the respondents (55%) in 2003 had a college or university degree, this changed in 2004, when only 40% of respondents had a college or university degree (P < 0.001). Also, we recorded a significant age-related change, suggesting that the average age of the respondents increased in 2004 (P < 0.001). The leading motivation for seeking medical information was 'unanswered questions after visiting a physician'. Most respondents (90% in 2003, 87% in 2004) went online to seek information on a specific illness or condition. Women sought information for friends and colleagues more often than men (42% vs. 28%, P = 0.031) in 2003, while these differences were diluted in 2004. Approximately half of all respondents discussed the information they found online with their physicians. Patients who feel they were given insufficient information, or simply seek more information than the physician provided, turn to using online health information, which no longer seems to be reserved to those with the highest education degrees.
