We provide fine asymptotics of solutions of fractional elliptic equations at boundary points where the domain is locally conical; that is, corner type singularities appear. Our method relies on a suitable smoothing of the corner singularity and an approximation scheme, which allow us to provide a Pohozaev type inequality. Then, the asymptotics of solutions at the conical point follow by an Almgren type monotonicity formula, blow-up analysis and Fourier decomposition on eigenspaces of a spherical eigenvalue problem. A strong unique continuation principle follows as a corollary., Comment: 33 pages, 3 figures

Mathematics - Analysis of PDEs - Abstract
In this paper we deal with a reaction-diffusion equation in a bounded interval of the real line with a nonlinear diffusion of Perona-Malik's type and a balanced bistable reaction term. Under very general assumptions, we study the persistence of layered solutions, showing that it strongly depends on the behavior of the reaction term close to the stable equilibria $\pm1$, described by a parameter $\theta>1$. If $\theta\in(1,2)$, we prove existence of steady states oscillating (and touching) $\pm1$, called $compactons$, while in the case $\theta=2$ we prove the presence of $metastable$ $solutions$, namely solutions with a transition layer structure which is maintained for an exponentially long time. Finally, for $\theta>2$, solutions with an unstable transition layer structure persist only for an algebraically long time., Comment: 41 pages,7 figures

We investigate unique continuation properties and asymptotic behaviour at boundary points for solutions to a class of elliptic equations involving the spectral fractional Laplacian. An extension procedure leads us to study a degenerate or singular equation on a cylinder, with a homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition on the lateral surface and a non homogeneous Neumann condition on the basis. For the extended problem, by an Almgren-type monotonicity formula and a blow-up analysis, we classify the local asymptotic profiles at the edge where the transition between boundary conditions occurs. Passing to traces, an analogous blow-up result and its consequent strong unique continuation property is deduced for the nonlocal fractional equation.

Mathematics - Analysis of PDEs - Abstract
We study a nonlocal capillarity problem with interaction kernels that are possibly anisotropic and not necessarily invariant under scaling. In particular, the lack of scale invariance will be modeled via two different fractional exponents $s_1, s_2\in (0,1)$ which take into account the possibility that the container and the environment present different features with respect to particle interactions. We determine a nonlocal Young's law for the contact angle and discuss the unique solvability of the corresponding equation in terms of the interaction kernels and of the relative adhesion coefficient.

We study local asymptotics of solutions to fractional elliptic equations at boundary points, under some outer homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. Our analysis is based on a blow-up procedure which involves some Almgren type monotonicity formulae and provides a classification of all possible homogeneity degrees of limiting entire profiles. As a consequence, we establish a strong unique continuation principle from boundary points., Comment: 41 pages, 2 figures

Mathematics - Analysis of PDEs ,35J15, 35C20, 74A45 - Abstract
In this work we develop an Almgren type monotonicity formula for a class of elliptic equations in a domain with a crack, in the presence of potentials satisfying either a negligibility condition with respect to the inverse-square weight or some suitable integrability properties. The study of the Almgren frequency function around a point on the edge of the crack, where the domain is highly non-smooth, requires the use of an approximation argument, based on the construction of a sequence of regular sets which approximate the cracked domain. Once a finite limit of the Almgren frequency is shown to exist, a blow-up analysis for scaled solutions allows us to prove asymptotic expansions and strong unique continuation from the edge of the crack., Comment: 32 pages, 2 figures

terrorism ,contemporary Italian culture ,victimhood - Abstract
This thesis explores the idea of victimhood in Italian literary representations of terrorism, looking at its relationship with realism. More specifically, I focus on the period of Italian political terrorism in the 1970s, the so-called Years of Lead, through a corpus of novels and short stories written by authors who did not have direct experience of those events. By examining how these writers reworked the memory of 1970s terrorism in the 2000s, I look at the victim as a literary character and as a cultural paradigm for this generation. I argue that a fundamental narrative of impotence lies beneath the political commitment of these authors, and that their realism expresses a concern about the practical usefulness of their writing. The portrayal of victims is underdeveloped and ideologically polarized, and more similar to representation in political and media discourse than in literature. Moreover, a mythologization of leftist revolutionary violence informs many of the works. This thesis presents the first extensive and comparative analysis of the imagery of political terrorism of the 1970s in the work of a generation of writers who were born after those years. By exploring the relationship between generations and memory in the context of the crisis of the nation-state and the growth of a globalized environment, as well as the relationship between political commitment and literary imagination, this study may also offer some new insights on the question of ethics and intellectual engagement in contemporary Italian literature. This thesis is divided into three main parts. In Part I, I develop a close textual analysis of the representation of victims as literary characters: I show how this representation interacts with the political and social background of Italy in the 2000s, and how it casts light on the authors' urge to demonstrate the authority and public importance of their role as writers and intellectuals. In Part II, I explore victimhood as a cultural paradigm of the so-called 'transition' generation, who saw the decline of the idea of the nation-state in a globalized world, namely the generation born between 1966 and 1980, entering their twenties between 1986 and 2000 and their thirties between 1996 and 2010. By reworking the memory of 1970s terrorism, these authors approached and tried to interpret the globalized present through political and historical paradigms typical of modern national narratives. In Part III, I discuss how their work relates to realism. In fact, the corpus of this thesis is part of the so-called 'return to reality' after postmodernism. With this formula, some critics identify an increasing interest, in contemporary Italian literature, in subjects taken from contemporary history and politics - such as the Years of Lead - and characterized by a mix of fictional and non-fictional features. By engaging with the critical debate on the 'return to reality' and the literary trends that this debate identifies, I argue that the 'return to reality' identifies a preoccupation with the political engagement of intellectuals in a moment of deep and significant social and political transformation. Analysis shows how this preoccupation reproduces the pragmatic narratives of violence in the representation of victimhood. Finally, I focus on two works that stand out for their original and unconventional depiction of victims. Showing how the authors make use of two radically different modes of representation, I highlight the political dimension of these works, and I argue that an attention to history and politics in literature does not necessarily imply the use of a realist mode of representation.

Open-loop co-benefits, Farm-manufacture, New bio-based yarns - Abstract
The research of the Textile Design laboratory, TexLab, of the Department of Architecture and Industrial Design (Unicampania) is aimed at the integration of local production chains for the valorisation of vegetable biomass for the development of innovative bio-based yarns. The project From Farm to Clothes aims to focus attention on new forms of production and consumption by interpreting the recommendations of the United Nations SDG’s goal number 12 “Responsible consumption and Production”. The project, therefore, defines a proposal for the development of bio-based textiles from agricultural and forest biomass, by creating a territorial network based on the building capacity of innovative processes and projects for local development. The TexLAB is part of the Textile & Clothing Business Labs (TCBL) community, a partner of the European project Herewear within the Work package 7 (Stakeholder community building & servicing); it interacts with the dissemination of results and exchange of models among which, the Lifecycle map for bio-based materials developed by UAL’s Centre for Circular Design, fits the project From Farm to Clothes.

Background During the first coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic wave, an unprecedented number of patients with respiratory failure due to a new, highly contagious virus needed hospitalization and intensive care unit (ICU) admission. The aim of the present study was to describe the communication and visiting policies of Italian intensive care units (ICUs) during the first COVID-19 pandemic wave and national lockdown and compare these data with prepandemic conditions. Methods A national web-based survey was conducted among 290 Italian hospitals. Each ICU (active between February 24 and May 31, 2020) was encouraged to complete an individual questionnaire inquiring the hospital/ICU structure/organization, communication/visiting habits and the role of clinical psychology prior to, and during the first COVID-19 pandemic wave. Results Two hundred and nine ICUs from 154 hospitals (53% of the contacted hospitals) completed the survey (202 adult and 7 pediatric ICUs). Among adult ICUs, 60% were dedicated to COVID-19 patients, 21% were dedicated to patients without COVID-19 and 19% were dedicated to both categories (Mixed). A total of 11,102 adult patients were admitted to the participating ICUs during the study period and only approximately 6% of patients received at least one visit. Communication with family members was guaranteed daily through an increased use of electronic devices and was preferentially addressed to the same family member. Compared to the prepandemic period, clinical psychologists supported physicians more often regarding communication with family members. Fewer patients received at least one visit from family members in COVID and mixed-ICUs than in non-COVID ICUs, l (0 [0–6]%, 0 [0–4]% and 11 [2–25]%, respectively, p Conclusions Visiting policies of Italian ICUs dedicated to adult patients were markedly altered during the first COVID-19 wave. Remote communication was widely adopted as a surrogate for family meetings. New strategies to favor a family-centered approach during the current and future pandemics are warranted.

The aim of the present thesis is to discuss the results obtained during my PhD studies, mainly devoted to nonlocal issues. We first deal with strong unique continuation principles and local asymptotic expansions at certain boundary points for solutions of two different classes of elliptic equations. We start the investigation by a class of fractional elliptic equations in a bounded domain under some outer homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. To do this, we exploit the Caffarelli-Silvestre extension procedure, which allows us to get an equivalent formulation of the nonlocal problem as a local problem in one dimension more, consisting in a mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary value problem. Then, we use a classical idea by Garofalo and Lin to obtain a doubling-type condition via a monotonicity formula for a suitable Almgren-type frequency function. To overcome the difficulties related to the lack of regularity at the Dirichlet-Neumann junction, we introduce a new technique based on an approximation argument, which leads us to derive a so-called Pohozaev-type identity needed to estimate the derivative of the Almgren function. Thus we gain a strong unique continuation result in the local context, which is in turn combined with blow-up arguments to deduce local asymptotics and, consequently, a strong unique continuation result in the nonlocal setting as well. We also provide a strong unique continuation result from the edge of a crack for the solutions to a specific class of second order elliptic equations in an open bounded domain with a fracture, on which a homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition is prescribed, in the presence of potentials satisfying either a negligibility condition with respect to the inverse-square weight or some suitable integrability properties. This local problem is related to a particular case of the setting described above, by virtue of a strong connection between this type of problems and the mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary value problems. We also treat a capillarity theory of nonlocal type. In our setting, we consider more general interaction kernels that are possibly anisotropic and not necessarily invariant under scaling. In particular, the lack of scale invariance is modeled via two different fractional exponents in order to take into account the possibility that the container and the environment present different features with respect to particle interactions. We determine a nonlocal Young's law for the contact angle between the droplet and the surface of the container and discuss the unique solvability of the corresponding equation in terms of the interaction kernels and of the relative adhesion coefficient.

- Abstract
Background: During the first coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic wave, an unprecedented number of patients with respiratory failure due to a new, highly contagious virus needed hospitalization and intensive care unit (ICU) admission. The aim of the present study was to describe the communication and visiting policies of Italian intensive care units (ICUs) during the first COVID-19 pandemic wave and national lockdown and compare these data with prepandemic conditions. Methods: A national web-based survey was conducted among 290 Italian hospitals. Each ICU (active between February 24 and May 31, 2020) was encouraged to complete an individual questionnaire inquiring the hospital/ICU structure/organization, communication/visiting habits and the role of clinical psychology prior to, and during the first COVID-19 pandemic wave. Results: Two hundred and nine ICUs from 154 hospitals (53% of the contacted hospitals) completed the survey (202 adult and 7 pediatric ICUs). Fewer patients received at least one visit from family members in COVID and mixed-ICUs than in non-COVID ICUs, l (0 [0-6]%, 0 [0-4]% and 11 [2-25]%, respectively, p < 0.001). Habits of pediatric ICUs were less affected by the pandemic. Conclusions: Visiting policies of Italian ICUs dedicated to adult patients were markedly altered during the first COVID-19 wave. Remote communication was wi

- Abstract
We study local asymptotics of solutions to fractional elliptic equations at boundary points, under some outer homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. Our analysis is based on a blow-up procedure which involves some Almgren type monotonicity formulæ and provides a classification of all possible homogeneity degrees of limiting entire profiles. As a consequence, we establish a strong unique continuation principle from boundary points.

37. Appropriation and Displacement: Postmemorial Articulations of the Italian Antifascist Resistance

- Abstract
Building on Marianne Hirsch’s notion of “Postmemory” (1992), this article addresses the memory of the Italian Resistance, the 1943-45 partisan struggle against Nazi-Fascism. Although the Resistance was made up of people of varied political beliefs sharing an antifascist view and aiming at freeing their country from Nazi-Fascism, its memory remains divisive within the Republic. This article examines this controversial memory and offers a discussion of its ramifications in Italy today, arguing that the postmemory of the Resistance was informed by mechanisms of appropriation and displacement. The generations coming after 1945 were often overwhelmed by the stories of their predecessors: this undermined the political potential of the re-signification of the past in their time. The article contextualizes such displacement within the crisis of nation-states and discusses how, in a globalized context, historical memory can be instead a paradigm to connect to unfamiliar others in the name of common values., Status Quaestionis, N. 18 (2020): Narrating World War II: Transcultural Articulations of Postmemory in Literature and Other Media

- Abstract
We study the Cauchy problem for the linear double dispersion equation u tt - Δ u tt + Δ 2 u - Δ u - Δ u t = 0 , t ≥ 0 , x ∈ R n and we derive long time decay estimates for the solution in L p spaces and in real Hardy spaces. We employ the obtained results to study the equation with nonlinearity Δ f (u) and nonsmooth f. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Il volume Una rivoluzione all'inglese.
