1. Hysteresis of spectral evolution in the soft state of black-hole binary LMC X-3

Abstract

We report the discovery of hysteresis between the x-ray spectrum and luminosity of black-hole binary LMC X-3. Our observations, with the Proportional Counter Array on the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, took place entirely within the soft spectral state, dominated by a spectral component that was fitted well with a multicolor disk blackbody. A power-law component was seen only during times when the luminosity of the disk blackbody was declining. The x-ray luminosity at these times was comparable to that seen in transient systems (x-ray novae) when they return to the hard state at the end of an outburst. Our observations may represent partial transitions to the hard state; complete transitions have been seen in this system by Wilms et al. (2001). If they are related to the soft-to-hard transition in transients, then they demonstrate that hysteresis effects can appear without a full state transition. We discuss these observations in the context of earlier observations of hysteresis within the hard state of binaries 1E 1740.7-2942 and GRS 1758-258 and in relation to published explanations of hysteresis in transients., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, accepted by The Astrophysical Journal

Abstract

The incidence and treatment of nerve disorders affecting the arm vary. Carpal tunnel syndrome, caused by nerve compression at the wrist, results in numbness, tingling and pain in the hand. It is assessed by tests of strength, sensory loss, pain and nerve and motor conduction speed in the hand. Treatments include reduced use of the wrist, placing the wrist in a splint, taking anti-inflammatory drugs and injecting steroids into the area. Patients whose condition does not improve with these treatments may require ligament surgery. Ulnar neuropathy, or ulnar nerve compression as it passes through the elbow, results in numbness in the little finger and pain and tenderness at the elbow. Conduction, sensory and motor tests may establish the disorder, but rarely pinpoint its location. Treatment is limited to reducing elbow movement and external causes of injury. Only disabling cases are treated surgically. Thoracic outlet syndrome is characterized by hand tingling upon shoulder movement, hand muscle weakness and hand and forearm sensory loss. This syndrome responds well to physical therapy that strengthens the neck and shoulder muscles.

Abstract

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is thought to be an autoimmune disease mediated by T lymphocytes that recognize myelin components of the central nervous system. In a 1 -year double-blind study, 30 individuals with relapsing-remitting, MS received daily capsules of bovine myelin or a control protein to determine the effect of oral tolerization to myelin antigens on the disease. Six of 15 individuals in the myelin-treated group had at least one major exacerbation; 12 of 15 had an attack in the control group. T cells reactive with myelin basic protein were reduced in the myelin-treated group. No toxicity or side effects were noted. Although conclusions about efficacy cannot be drawn from these data, they open an area of investigation for MS and other autoimmune diseases., Multiple sclerosis is an inflammatory disease of the centtal nervous system (CNS) of presumed autoimmune etiology[1].
