The synthesis of iodoform in the introductory chemistry laboratory can be used to illustrate the value of electrolysis in chemistry and determine Faraday's constant and Avogadro's number. Aqueous potassium iodide is electrolyzed in the presence of acetone to prepare iodoform. Experiment procedures, apparatus and reaction equations are included.

The dehydrohalogenation of 2-bromobutane and alcoholic potassium hydroxide demonstrate a deviation from Saytzeff elimination because the increases in the base size affect the products' distribution. This result can be observed using gas chromatography and the microscale experiment is useful for organic chemistry laboratories.

Recognizing that the vast majority of students will enter the chemical industry, an optional four-course sequence related to industrial chemistry was introduced. Program details are given along with information on how it was integrated into the curriculum of a small school with minimal staff size changes and limited facitlities. (JN)

The article focuses on the development of federal law enforcement tactical response program and the deployment of medical element in support of police and public safety needs in the devastated areas caused by Hurricane Katrina in the U.S. It describes the concept of incorporating dedicated emergency medical support into law enforcement tactical and special operations team. The Operational Medical Support guidelines were implemented. The law enforcement operations team documented the evaluation and treatment of 214 patients for a total of 246 complaints.
