Using circularly-polarized light to control quantum matter is a highly intriguing topic in physics, chemistry and biology. Previous studies have demonstrated helicity-dependent optical control of spatial chirality and magnetization $M$. The former is central for asymmetric synthesis in chemistry and homochirality in bio-molecules, while the latter is of great interest for ferromagnetic spintronics. In this paper, we report the surprising observation of helicity-dependent optical control of fully-compensated antiferromagnetic (AFM) order in 2D even-layered MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, a topological Axion insulator with neither chirality nor $M$. We further demonstrate helicity-dependent optical creation of AFM domain walls by double induction beams and the direct reversal of AFM domains by ultrafast pulses. The control and reversal of AFM domains and domain walls by light helicity have never been achieved in any fully-compensated AFM. To understand this optical control, we study a novel type of circular dichroism (CD) proportional to the AFM order, which only appears in reflection but is absent in transmission. We show that the optical control and CD both arise from the optical Axion electrodynamics, which can be visualized as a Berry curvature real space dipole. Our Axion induction provides the possibility to optically control a family of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric AFMs such as Cr$_2$O$_3$, CrI$_3$ and possibly novel states in cuprates. In MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, this further opens the door for optical writing of dissipationless circuit formed by topological edge states.

Background: engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) have already made their way into myriad applications and products across multiple industries. However, the potential health risks of exposure to ENMs remain poorly understood. This is particularly true for the emerging class of ENMs know as 2-dimensional nanomaterials (2DNMs), with a thickness of one or a few layers of atoms arranged in a planar structure. Methods: the present study assesses the biotransformations and in vitro cytotoxicity in the gastrointestinal tract of 11 2DNMs, namely graphene, graphene oxide (GO), partially reduced graphene oxide (prGO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), molybdenum disulphide (MoS2), and tungsten disulphide (WS2). The evaluated pristine materials were either readily dispersed in water or dispersed with the use of a surfactant (Na-cholate or PF108). Materials dispersed in a fasting food model (FFM, water) were subjected to simulated 3-phase (oral, gastric, and small intestinal) digestion to replicate the biotransformations that would occur in the GIT after ingestion. A triculture model of small intestinal epithelium was used to assess the effects of the digested products (digestas) on epithelial layer integrity, cytotoxicity, viability, oxidative stress, and initiation of apoptosis. Results: physicochemical characterization of the 2DNMs in FFM dispersions and in small intestinal digestas revealed significant agglomeration by all materials during digestion, most prominently by graphene, which was likely caused by interactions with digestive proteins. Also, MoS2 had dissolved by ∼75% by the end of simulated digestion. Other than a low but statistically significant increase in cytotoxicity observed with all inorganic materials and graphene dispersed in PF108, no adverse effects were observed in the exposed tricultures. Conclusions: our results suggest that occasional ingestion of small quantities of 2DNMs may not be highly cytotoxic in a physiologically relevant in vitro model of the intestinal epithelium. Still, their inflammatory or genotoxic potential after short- or long-term ingestion remains unclear and needs to be studied in future in vitro and in vivo studies. These would include studies of effects on co-ingested nutrient digestion and absorption, which have been documented for numerous ingested ENMs, as well as effects on the gut microbiome, which can have important health implications.

While ferromagnets have been known and exploited for millennia, antiferromagnets (AFMs) were only discovered in the 1930s. The elusive nature indicates AFMs' unique properties: At large scale, due to the absence of global magnetization, AFMs may appear to behave like any non-magnetic material; However, such a seemingly mundane macroscopic magnetic property is highly nontrivial at microscopic level, where opposite spin alignment within the AFM unit cell forms a rich internal structure. In topological AFMs, such an internal structure leads to a new possibility, where topology and Berry phase can acquire distinct spatial textures. Here, we study this exciting possibility in an AFM Axion insulator, even-layered MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ flakes, where spatial degrees of freedom correspond to different layers. Remarkably, we report the observation of a new type of Hall effect, the layer Hall effect, where electrons from the top and bottom layers spontaneously deflect in opposite directions. Specifically, under no net electric field, even-layered MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ shows no anomalous Hall effect (AHE); However, applying an electric field isolates the response from one layer and leads to the surprising emergence of a large layer-polarized AHE (~50%$\frac{e^2}{h}$). Such a layer Hall effect uncovers a highly rare layer-locked Berry curvature, which serves as a unique character of the space-time $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric AFM topological insulator state. Moreover, we found that the layer-locked Berry curvature can be manipulated by the Axion field, E$\cdot$B, which drives the system between the opposite AFM states. To better understand the structure-reactivity relationships of self-supported nanoporous catalysts, a nanoscale characterization of the materials is required. Transmission Kikuchi Diffraction (TKD), or transmission electron backscatter diffraction (t-EBSD), is a recent technique used to analyze the grain crystallography and morphology of thin films and nanometer-scale materials. Using a conventional EBSD detector in a FIB-SEM instrument, we investigate nanoporous gold (npAu) samples with ligament size in the 50–70 nm range. Grains with diameters below 50 nm can be clearly resolved, but also well-defined grain boundaries extending over 3 to 4 pixels, proving the high resolution of the method. The presence of contaminations during sample preparation by FIB milling is also discussed. The results provide deeper insight than conventional EBSD technique can alone.

As other sectors electrify, current battery technology makes this impractical for the aviation industry. The fastest pathway to reducing the carbon contributions of aviation is to create low or no net carbon-emitting drop-in petroleum alternatives. This research explores 3 potential sorghum derived jet fuel molecules from 4 different production routes, hydro-processed esters and fatty acids (HEFA), and Jet A, to identify how blends including these fuels could offer improved performance (MJ/kg, MJ/L) and improved emissions (gCO2/MJ) while minimizing costs. Different applications will value each target metric differently. This research utilizes the Jet Fuel Blend Optimizer (JudO) to create a 4-dimensional Pareto front across potential solutions. The molecules considered will not offer reduced cost compared to conventional jet fuel (Jet A), but they can be utilized to create blends with higher specific energy, greater energy density, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Considerations including carbon credits, the sale of byproducts, and the valuation of improved performance will make the proposed molecules more commercially viable. At the lowest region of GHG solutions, coupled with equivalent LCFS approximations, JudO determined blends that could achieve as high as 69% overall carbon reductions at a premium of $0.34/L.

The emergence of machine learning into scientific fields has created opportunities for novel and powerful image processing techniques. Algorithms that can perform complex tasks without a “man-in-the-loop” or explicit instructions are invaluable artificial intelligence tools. These algorithms typically require a large set of training data on which to base statistical predictions. In the case of electro-optical infrared (EO/IR) remote sensing, algorithm designers often seek a substantial library of images comprising many weather conditions, times of day, sensor resolutions, etc. These images may be synthetic (predicted) or measured, but should encompass a large variety of targets imaged from a variety of vantage points against numerous backgrounds. Acquiring such a large set of measured imagery with sufficient variation can be difficult, requiring numerous field campaigns. Alternatively, accurate prediction of target signatures in cluttered outdoor scenes may be a viable option. In this work, sensor imagery is generated using CoTherm, a co-simulation tool which operates MuSES (an EO/IR simulation code) in an automated fashion to create a large library of synthetic images. The relevant MuSES inputs – which might include environmental factors, global location, date and time, vehicle engine state, human clothing and activity level, or sensor waveband – can be manipulated by a CoTherm workflow process. The output of this process is a large library of MuSES-generated EO/IR sensor radiance images suitable for algorithm development. If desired, synthetic target pixels can be inserted into measured background images for added realism.

Atom probe tomography (APT) allows measurement of the three-dimensional structure and composition of materials, but specific sample preparation procedures are required for challenging materials such as aggregates of nanoparticles. Indeed, the presence of porosity within the specimen affects both the stability of the sample and the accuracy of the data. Here, aggregates of nanoparticles were transferred onto a micromanipulator tip and embedded via electron-beam-assisted deposition of Pt. Successive FIB-millings and Pt-depositions are needed to create suitable APT tips. The 3D reconstruction reveals the presence of 15–20 nm nanoparticles, and mass-spectral analysis shows the absence of trace elements within the catalyst, thus serving as quality control for the synthesis of nanoparticles with specific compositions.

A detailed assessment is presented on the calculation and uncertainty of the lower heating value (net heat of combustion) of conventional and sustainable aviation fuels, from hydrocarbon class concentration measurements, reference molecular heats of formation, and the uncertainties of these reference heats of formation. Calculations using this paper’s method and estimations using ASTM D3338 are reported for 17 fuels of diverse compositions and compared against reported ASTM D4809 measurements. All the calculations made by this method and the reported ASTM D4809 measurements agree (i.e., within 95% confidence intervals). The 95% confidence interval of the lower heating value of fuel candidates that are comprised entirely of normal- and iso-alkanes is less than 0.1 MJ/kg by the method described here, while high cyclo-alkane content leads to 95% confidence bands that approach 0.2 MJ/kg. Taking a possible bias into account, the accuracy and precision of the method described in this work could be as high as 0.23 MJ/kg for some samples.

Cellulose is one of the most abundant natural polymers, is readily available, biodegradable, and inexpensive. Recently, interest is growing around nanoscale cellulose due to the sustainability of these materials, the novel properties, and the overall low environmental impact. The rapid expansion of nanocellulose uses in various applications makes the study of the toxicological properties of these materials of great importance to public health regulators. However, most of the current toxicological studies are highly conflicting, inconclusive, and contradictory. The major reasons for these discrepancies are the lack of standardized methods to produce industry-relevant reference nanocellulose and relevant characterization that will expand beyond the traditional cellulose characterization for applications. In order to address these issues, industry-relevant synthesis platforms were developed to produce nanocellulose of controlled properties that can be used as reference materials in toxicological studies. Herein, two types of nanocellulose were synthesized, cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) using the friction grinding platform and an acid hydrolysis approach respectively. The nanocellulose structures were characterized extensively regarding their physicochemical properties, including testing for endotoxins and bacteria contamination.

Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to higher-value hydrocarbons beyond C1 products is desirable for applications in energy storage, transportation and the chemical industry. Cu catalysts have shown the potential to catalyse C–C coupling for C2+ products, but still suffer from low selectivity in water. Here, we use density functional theory to determine the energetics of the initial C–C coupling steps on different Cu facets in CO2 reduction, and suggest that the Cu(100) and stepped (211) facets favour C2+ product formation over Cu(111). To demonstrate this, we report the tuning of facet exposure on Cu foil through the metal ion battery cycling method. Compared with the polished Cu foil, our 100-cycled Cu nanocube catalyst with exposed (100) facets presents a sixfold improvement in C2+ to C1 product ratio, with a highest C2+ Faradaic efficiency of over 60% and H2 below 20%, and a corresponding C2+ current of more than 40 mA cm–2. Electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to products containing multiple carbon atoms is useful for producing high-value chemicals and fuels. This work uses theory to predict the preferred copper surface for C–C coupling, and subsequent metal ion cycling to produce the desired facets results in a catalyst that is highly selective for C2+ products.

Raspberry-Colloid-Templated (RCT) catalysts are an emerging class of materials that show an unprecedented level of sinter-resistance and exhibit high catalytic activity. Here a comprehensive study of the origin of NP stability and accessibility in RCT catalysts using theoretical modeling, 3D electron microscopy, and epitaxial overgrowth is reported. The approach is showcased for silica-based RCT catalysts containing dilute Pd-in-Au NPs previously used in hydrogenation and oxidation catalysis. Modeling of the contact line of the silica precursor infiltrating into the assembled raspberry colloids suggests that a large part of the particles must be embedded into silica, which is confirmed by quantitative visualization of g200nindividual NPs by dual-axis electron tomography. The RCT catalysts have a unique structure in which all NPs reside at the pore wall but have g50%nof their surface embedded in the matrix, giving rise to the strongly enhanced thermal and mechanical stability. Importantly, epitaxial overgrowth of Ag on the supported NPs reveals that not only the NP surface exposed to the pore but the embedded interface as well remained chemically accessible. This mechanistic understanding provides valuable guidance in the design of stable catalytic materials.

Summary Utilizing solar energy to fix CO 2 with water into chemical fuels and oxygen, a mimic process of photosynthesis in nature, is becoming increasingly important but still challenged by low selectivity and activity, especially in CO 2 electrocatalytic reduction. Here, we report transition-metal atoms coordinated in a graphene shell as active centers for aqueous CO 2 reduction to CO with high faradic efficiencies over 90% under significant currents up to ∼60 mA/mg. We employed three-dimensional atom probe tomography to directly identify the single Ni atomic sites in graphene vacancies. Theoretical simulations suggest that compared with metallic Ni, the Ni atomic sites present different electronic structures that facilitate CO 2 -to-CO conversion and suppress the competing hydrogen evolution reaction dramatically. Coupled with Li + -tuned Co 3 O 4 oxygen evolution catalyst and powered by a triple-junction solar cell, our artificial photosynthesis system achieves a peak solar-to-CO efficiency of 12.7% by using earth-abundant transition-metal electrocatalysts in a pH-equal system.

Retrospective reports of family environments are often the only way to collect the data concerning the influence of a child’s experience in the family on later development. However, the accuracy of retrospective measures can be problematic because of social desirability or potential failures of memory. The purpose of this study is to compare retrospective and prospective measures of family environment. In this unique study, 198 parents and 241 adolescent children (mean age 15.7) described their family environment, and then 25 years later, completed retrospective reports. We test the effects of memory, positivity, gender, and generation on retrospective reports, as well as testing the ability of prospective and retrospective measures to predict adult well-being and adult–child/elder–parent relationships. Results show moderate correlations of 0.30–0.45 between prospective and retrospective measures. In examining the relative effectiveness of prospective and retrospective measures to predict later life outcomes, we find that retrospective reports of the family environment most validly capture influences on the child in domains of strong emotional content but are less successful in cognitive domains.

We present the first copper iridium binary metal oxide with the chemical formula Cu2IrO3. The material is synthesized from the parent compound Na2IrO3 by a topotactic reaction where sodium is exchanged with copper under mild conditions. Cu2IrO3 has the same monoclinic space group (C2/c) as Na2IrO3 with a layered honeycomb structure. The parent compound Na2IrO3 is proposed to be relevant to the Kitaev spin liquid on the basis of having Ir4+ with an effective spin of 1/2 on a honeycomb lattice. Remarkably, whereas Na2IrO3 shows a long-range magnetic order at 15 K and fails to become a true spin liquid, Cu2IrO3 remains disordered until 2.7 K, at which point a short-range order develops. Rietveld analysis shows less distortions in the honeycomb structure of Cu2IrO3 with bond angles closer to 120° compared to Na2IrO3. Thus, the weak short-range magnetism combined with the nearly ideal honeycomb structure places Cu2IrO3 closer to a Kitaev spin liquid than its predecessors.

3D nanoporous metals made by alloy corrosion have attracted much attention due to various promising applications ranging from catalysis and sensing to energy storage and actuation. In this work we report a new process for the fabrication of 3D open nanoporous metal networks that phenomenologically resembles the nano-Kirkendall hollowing process previously reported for Ag/Au nanowires and nanoparticles, with the difference that the involved length scales are 10–100 times larger. Specifically, we find that dry oxidation of Ag70Au30 bulk alloy samples by ozone exposure at 150 °C stimulates extremely rapid Ag outward diffusion toward the gas/alloy-surface interface, at rates at least 5 orders of magnitude faster than predicted on the basis of reported Ag bulk diffusion values. The micrometer-thick Ag depleted alloy region thus formed transforms into a 3D open nanoporous network morphology upon further exposure to methanol–O2 at 150 °C. Both random walk and respondent-driven sampling (RDS) exploit social networks and may reduce biases introduced by earlier methods for sampling from hidden populations. Although RDS has become much more widely used by social researchers than random walk (RW), there has been little discussion of the tradeoffs in choosing RDS over RW. This paper compares experiences of implementing RW and RDS to recruit drug users to a network-based study in Houston, Texas. Both recruitment methods were implemented over comparable periods of time, with the same population, by the same research staff. RDS methods recruited more participants with less strain on staff. However, participants recruited through RW were more forthcoming than RDS participants in helping to recruit members of their social networks. Findings indicate that, dependent upon study goals, researchers' choice of design may influence participant recruitment, participant commitment, and impact on staff, factors that may in turn affect overall study success.

Significance Iron-doped nickel oxide films are the most active nonnoble metal oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts in alkaline electrolyte. Since Corrigan’s original discovery of enhanced activity with Fe doping in nickel oxides, the chemical basis for this synergy remains unclear. Recent studies suggest iron to assume a high valent oxidation state, thus promoting OER. We provide evidence for an alternative role of Fe 3+ as a Lewis acid in the host nickel oxide. We observe that Fe 3+ promotes the formation of Ni 4+ , which leads to enhanced catalytic activity. This result is consistent with Fe 3+ to be one of the strongest Lewis acidic metals by any measure of Lewis acidity, including hard–soft acid base theory, metal ion pK a s, and chemical inertness.

Advances in low-dimensional superconductivity are often realized through improvements in material quality. Apart from a small group of organic materials, there is a near absence of clean-limit two-dimensional (2D) superconductors, which presents an impediment to the pursuit of numerous long-standing predictions for exotic superconductivity with fragile pairing symmetries. We developed a bulk superlattice consisting of the transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) superconductor 2H-niobium disulfide (2H-NbS2) and a commensurate block layer that yields enhanced two-dimensionality, high electronic quality, and clean-limit inorganic 2D superconductivity. Iron storage proteins are essential for cellular iron homeostasis and redox balance. Ferritin proteins are the major storage units for bioavailable forms of iron. Some organisms lack ferritins, and it is not known how they store iron. Encapsulins, a class of protein-based organelles, have recently been implicated in microbial iron and redox metabolism. Here, we report the structural and mechanistic characterization of a 42 nm two-component encapsulin-based iron storage compartment from Quasibacillus thermotolerans. Using cryo-electron microscopy and x-ray crystallography, we reveal the assembly principles of a thermostable T = 4 shell topology and its catalytic ferroxidase cargo and show interactions underlying cargo-shell co-assembly. This compartment has an exceptionally large iron storage capacity storing over 23,000 iron atoms. Our results reveal a new approach for survival in diverse habitats with limited or fluctuating iron availability via an iron storage system able to store 10 to 20 times more iron than ferritin., eLife digest People often think of the cell as the basic unit of life. Despite this, individual cells are also subdivided into many compartments, called ‘organelles’ because they act like the internal organs of the cell. For example, organelles can break down nutrients, store information in the form of DNA, or help remove waste. Even bacterial cells, despite being smaller and simpler than most other cell types, contain organelle-like structures. These are tiny compartments, termed protein organelles, which are enclosed by ‘shells’ made from self-assembling proteins within the cell. Cells need iron to carry out the chemical reactions necessary for life. Iron is therefore an essential nutrient, but it can also be toxic if not stored properly inside the cell. Cells often solve this problem by locking iron away inside small, specialised protein cages called ferritins until it can be used. Most organisms, from humans to bacteria, have ferritins, but some do not, and the way these organisms store iron remains largely unknown. The bacterium Quasibacillus thermotolerans is an example of an organism that lacks ferritins. However, it does contain a recently discovered type of protein organelle, called an encapsulin. Giessen et al. wanted to find out more about the structure of this protein organelle, and to determine if it helped these bacteria store iron. Q. thermotolerans’ encapsulin turned out to be the largest of its kind discovered to date. Detailed imaging experiments, using a combination of electron microscopy and X-ray- based techniques, revealed that the protein shell of the encapsulin had an overall structure resembling chain mail and contained multiple pores. These pores were negatively charged, meaning that they could efficiently attract iron (which has a positive charge) and funnel it into the interior of the compartment. The compartment itself was able to store at least 20 times more iron than ferritins, making this encapsulin one of the most efficient methods of iron storage in any cell. These findings will help us better understand how bacteria that lack ferritins cope with the problem of iron storage. In the future, encapsulins could also be used as a target for new therapies to fight bacterial infections, or even as the building blocks for microscopic chemical reactors or ‘storage facilities’ in industrial applications.

Synthesis of low-dimensional carbon nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is a key driver for achieving advances in energy storage, computing, and multifunctional composites, among other applications. Here, we report high-yield thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) synthesis of CNTs catalyzed by reagent-grade common sodium-containing compounds, including NaCl, NaHCO(3), Na(2)CO(3), and NaOH, found in table salt, baking soda, and detergents, respectively. Coupled with an oxidative dehydrogenation reaction to crack acetylene at reduced temperatures, Na-based nanoparticles have been observed to catalyze CNT growth at temperatures below 400°C. Ex situ and in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveal unique CNT morphologies and growth characteristics, including a vaporizing Na catalyst phenomenon that we leverage to create CNTs without residual catalyst particles for applications that require metal-free CNTs. Na is shown to synthesize CNTs on numerous substrates, and as the first alkali group metal catalyst demonstrated for CNT growth, holds great promise for expanding the understanding of nanocarbon synthesis.

These results form the basis for understanding alternate microbial strategies for dealing with the essential element iron.

The kagome lattice based on 3d transition metals is a versatile platform for novel topological phases hosting symmetry-protected electronic excitations and exotic magnetic ground states. However, the paradigmatic states of the idealized two-dimensional (2D) kagome lattice - Dirac fermions and topological flat bands - have not been simultaneously observed, partly owing to the complex stacking structure of the kagome compounds studied to date. Here, we take the approach of examining FeSn, an antiferromagnetic single-layer kagome metal with spatially-decoupled kagome planes. Using polarization- and termination-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we detect the momentum-space signatures of coexisting flat bands and Dirac fermions in the vicinity of the Fermi energy. Intriguingly, when complemented with bulk-sensitive de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) measurements, our data reveal an even richer electronic structure that exhibits robust surface Dirac fermions on specific crystalline terminations. Through band structure calculations and matrix element simulations, we demonstrate that the bulk Dirac bands arise from in-plane localized Fe-3d orbitals under kagome symmetry, while the surface state realizes a rare example of fully spin-polarized 2D Dirac fermions when combined with spin-layer locking in FeSn. These results highlight FeSn as a prototypical host for the emergent excitations of the kagome lattice. The prospect to harness these excitations for novel topological phases and spintronic devices is a frontier of great promise at the confluence of topology, magnetism, and strongly-correlated electron physics.

This chapter provides an overview of the concepts of scanning electron microscopy () from a theoretical as well as practical operational perspective. The theory section begins with the basics of image formation followed by an explanation of the interaction of the electron beam with the sample. A description of the different types of electron guns is also included. The concepts involved with image formation from a rastered (or scanned) electron beam on a surface is explained along with the mechanisms of contrast generation from sample surface topography and sample composition. The different SEM detectors are also explained including a description of the practical application of detectors under various sample conditions. Numerous diagrams and figures in this chapter illustrate imaging geometries and possible SEM system configurations. Included in the chapter is an explanation of the various instrument operation parameters for different samples as well as a discussion of the effects of electron-beam accelerating voltages on sample imaging, contrast, and resolution.

CNTs-reinforced composites are promising candidates for various applications due to their enhanced electrical and mechanical properties. In this work, copper/multiwall-carbon-nanotube composites with various weight fractions (1, 2, and 5 wt%) of MWCNTs were synthesized chemically by the dissociation of copper nitrate-containing MWCNTs followed by reduction under hydrogen atmosphere. Bulk composite pellets were prepared by precompaction under uniaxial pressure and isostatic pressure followed by sintering under hydrogen/argon atmosphere. Raman spectroscopy results show a continuous increase in CNTs defects throughout the synthesis, compaction and sintering processes. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed good dispersion, proper adhesion of copper nanoparticles onto the CNTs and CNTs network formation. X-ray diffraction and electron energy loss spectroscopy confirmed the full reduction of copper oxide into metallic copper. The Cu-MWCNTs composites exhibited a decrease in electrical resistivity when the CNTs volume fraction increased. The composite containing 5 wt% MWCNTs exhibited a significant resistivity decrease of two orders of magnitude at room temperature.

Iron oxide nanoparticles were obtained by co-precipitation from mixed iron salts and ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) solutions. In this paper, solutions with different concentrations of ammonium hydroxide were used and its effect on composition and morphology were analyzed. Detailed morphological studies from transmission electron microscopy images reveal the presence of two different shapes: spheroidal and elongated nanoparticles. The samples produced with low concentrations of NH4OH showed elongated shapes in the order of 100 nm and 10 nm (length & width), and the samples produced with high concentrations of NH4OH exhibit a homogeneous size distribution of spheroidal particles of the order of 10 nm diameter. The structural analysis from x-ray diffraction elucidates the presence of different phases for samples produced with different alkali concentrations. From vibrating sample magnetometer measurements and Mossbauer spectroscopy on samples produced with high and low alkali concentrations, superparamagnetic and paramagnetic behavior was respectively observed. The magnetic nanoparticles production procedure presented here will not only be used in cutting-edge research but will also serve as a teaching tool to introduce undergraduate, master's and Ph.D. students.

As alternative jet fuels continue to be developed, their impact on combustor performance remains of utmost importance. Alternative jet fuels generally contain few aromatics and differ in alkylated compositions, yielding different chemical and physical properties from those of conventional jet fuels; understanding how these property differences impact combustor performance near limiting conditions is important in certifying their use in blending with petroleum derived fuels or as complete substitutes. Ignition and extinction properties that are associated with Lean Blowout (LBO) are areas of focus for jet fuel certification as they are important safety metrics bounding combustor stability. Previous results for 23 different test fuels in a referee combustor show a strong correlation of Lean Blowout (LBO) with fuel Derived Cetane Number (DCN). This previous study involved fuels with compositions similar to conventional fuels. However, fuels with properties differing significantly from conventional fuels were found to have a weaker correlation with DCN and higher LBO equivalence ratios overall. The surrogate fuels and blends that show the largest discrepancy from the earlier correlation were blends involving highly volatile, low DCN components such as iso-octane prevalent in the early stages of distillation, and less volatile, high DCN normal alkane components such as n-hexadecane, prevalent in the final stages of distillation. Thus, significant differences in fuel reactivity along the distillation curve from those of conventional petroleum derived fuels appeared to exhibit differing LBO character. From these observations, three hypotheses, preferential vaporization, relative droplet lifetimes, and thermal quenching, are proposed and investigated by utilizing the available data. Using normalized power law regressions, distillation simulation methods and Quantitative Structure Property Relation (QSPR) results, the DCN at 34% distillation recovery show a stronger correlation with LBO than the DCN determine for the fuel itself. In this paper, we apply findings to propose fuel compositions to investigate the noted hypotheses by utilizing reactive low molecular weight molecules and a less reactive high molecular weight fuel. The suggested fuel to stress test this hypothesis is a blend of 30 (molar)% n-heptane and 70 (molar)% Gevo Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ), which is essentially composed of (primarily) 2,2,4,6,6 iso-dodecane and isocetane. If preferential vaporization is significant, then this fuel should be more stable than the “DCN-Law,” i.e. fuels are no more stable than the corresponding DCN allows, would predict.

The controlled nanoscale patterning of 2D materials is a promising approach for engineering the optoelectronic, thermal, and mechanical properties of these materials to achieve novel functionalities and devices. Herein, high-resolution patterning of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is demonstrated via both helium and neon ion beams and an optimal dosage range for both ions that serve as a baseline for insulating 2D materials is identified. Through this nanofabrication approach, a grating with a 35 nm pitch, individual structure sizes down to 20 nm, and additional nanostructures created by patterning crystal step edges are demonstrated. Raman spectroscopy is used to study the defects induced by the ion beam patterning and is correlated to scanning probe microscopy. Photothermal and scanning near-field optical microscopy measure the resulting near-field absorption and scattering of the nanostructures. These measurements reveal a large photothermal expansion of nanostructured h-BN that is dependent on the height to width aspect ratio of the nanostructures. This effect is attributed to the large anisotropy of the thermal expansion coefficients of h-BN and the nanostructuring implemented. The photothermal expansion should be present in other van der Waals materials with large anisotropy and can lead to applications such as nanomechanical switches driven by light.
