Abstract

We address the problem of efficiently evaluating target functional dependencies (fds) in the Data Exchange (DE) process. Target fds naturally occur in many DE scenarios, including the ones in Life Sciences in which multiple source relations need to be structured under a constrained target schema. However, despite their wide use, target fds' evaluation is still a bottleneck in the state-of-the-art DE engines. Systems relying on an all-SQL approach typically do not support target fds unless additional information is provided. Alternatively, DE engines that do include these dependencies typically pay the price of a significant drop in performance and scalability. In this paper, we present a novel chase-based algorithm that can efficiently handle arbitrary fds on the target. Our approach essentially relies on exploiting the interactions between source-to-target (s-t) tuple-generating dependencies (tgds) and target fds. This allows us to tame the size of the intermediate chase results, by playing on a careful ordering of chase steps interleaving fds and (chosen) tgds. As a direct consequence, we importantly diminish the fd application scope, often a central cause of the dramatic overhead induced by target fds. Moreover, reasoning on dependency interaction further leads us to interesting parallelization opportunities, yielding additional scalability gains. We provide a proof-of-concept implementation of our chase-based algorithm and an experimental study aiming at gauging its scalability with respect to a number of parameters, among which the size of source instances and the number of dependencies of each tested scenario. Finally, we empirically compare with the latest DE engines, and show that our algorithm outperforms them.

Abstract

International audience; Big data applications routinely involve diverse datasets: relations at or nested, complex-structure graphs, documents, poorly struc-tured logs, or even text data. To handle the data, application designers usually rely on several data stores used side-by-side, each capable of handling one or a few data models, and each very ee-cient for some, but not all, kinds of processing on the data. A current limitation is that applications are written taking into account which part of the data is stored in which store and how. This fails to take advantage of (i) possible redundancy, when the same data may be accessible (with diierent performance) from distinct data stores; (ii) partial query results (in the style of materialized views) which may be available in the stores. We present ESTOCADA, a novel approach connecting applications to the potentially heterogeneous systems where their input data resides. ESTOCADA can be used in a polystore setting to transparently enable each query to beneet from the best combination of stored data and available processing capabilities. ESTOCADA leverages recent advances in the area of view-based query rewriting under constraints, which we use to describe the various data models and stored data. Our experiments illustrate the signiicant performance gains achieved by ESTOCADA.

National audience; Data centric applications often use heterogeneous datasets: some very large while others of moderate size, some highly structured (e.g., relations) while others complex structured (e.g., graphs) or little structured (e.g., log data). Facing them is a variety of storage systems but none of which is the best for all, at all times.We present Estocada, an architecture we are currently developing to efficiently handle highly heterogeneous datasets based on a dynamic set of potentially very different data stores. Estocada provides to the ap- plication layer access to each dataset in its native format, while hosting them internally in a set of potentially overlapping fragments, possibly distributed across heterogeneous stores. At the core of Estocada lie powerful view-based rewriting and view selection algorithms to marry correctness with high performance.

International audience; Next-generation data centric applications often involve di-verse datasets, some very large while others may be of mod-erate size, some highly structured (e.g., relations) while others may have more complex structure (e.g., graphs) or little structure (e.g., text or log data). Facing them is a variety of storage systems, each of which can host some of the datasets (possibly after some data migration), but none of which is likely to be best for all, at all times. Deploying and efficiently running data-centric applications in such a complex setting is very challenging. We propose Estocada, an architecture for efficiently han-dling highly heterogeneous datasets based on a dynamic set of potentially very different data stores. Estocada pro-vides to the application/programming layer access to each data set in its native format, while hosting them internally in a set of potentially overlapping fragments, possibly dis-tributing (fragments of) each dataset across heterogeneous stores. Given workload information, Estocada self-tunes for performance, i.e., it automatically choses the fragments of each data set to be deployed in each store so as to op-timize performance. At the core of Estocada lie powerful view-based rewriting and view selection algorithms, required in order to correctly handle the features (nesting, keys, con-straints etc.) of the diverse data models involved, and thus to marry correctness with high performance.

The ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) programme is directed towards physics input to critical elements of the ITER design and the preparation of ITER operation, as well as addressing physics issues for a future DEMO design. Since 2015, AUG is equipped with a new pair of 3-strap ICRF antennas, which were designed for a reduction of tungsten release during ICRF operation. As predicted, a factor two reduction on the ICRF-induced W plasma content could be achieved by the reduction of the sheath voltage at the antenna limiters via the compensation of the image currents of the central and side straps in the antenna frame. There are two main operational scenario lines in AUG. Experiments with low collisionality, which comprise current drive, ELM mitigation/suppression and fast ion physics, are mainly done with freshly boronized walls to reduce the tungsten influx at these high edge temperature conditions. Full ELM suppression and non-inductive operation up to a plasma current of I p = 0.8 MA could be obtained at low plasma density. Plasma exhaust is studied under conditions of high neutral divertor pressure and separatrix electron density, where a fresh boronization is not required. Substantial progress could be achieved for the understanding of the confinement degradation by strong D puffing and the improvement with nitrogen or carbon seeding. Inward/outward shifts of the electron density profile relative to the temperature profile effect the edge stability via the pressure profile changes and lead to improved/decreased pedestal performance. Seeding and D gas puffing are found to effect the core fueling via changes in a region of high density on the high field side (HFSHD). The integration of all above mentioned operational scenarios will be feasible and naturally obtained in a large device where the edge is more opaque for neutrals and higher plasma temperatures provide a lower collisionality. The combination of exhaust control with pellet fueling has been successfully demonstrated. High divertor enrichment values of nitrogen E N ⩾ 10 have been obtained during pellet injection, which is a prerequisite for the simultaneous achievement of good core plasma purity and high divertor radiation levels. Impurity accumulation observed in the all-metal AUG device caused by the strong neoclassical inward transport of tungsten in the pedestal is expected to be relieved by the higher neoclassical temperature screening in larger devices.

International audience; We revisit the Chase&Backchase (C&B) algorithm for query refor-mulation under constraints, which provides a uniform solution to such particular-case problems as view-based rewriting under con-straints, semantic query optimization, and physical access path se-lection in query optimization. For an important class of queries and constraints, C&B has been shown to be complete, i.e. guaranteed to find all (join-)minimal reformulations under constraints. C&B is based on constructing a canonical rewriting candidate called a universal plan, then inspecting its exponentially many sub-queries in search for minimal reformulations, essentially removing redun-dant joins in all possible ways. This inspection involves chasing the subquery. Because of the resulting exponentially many chases, the conventional wisdom has held that completeness is a concept of mainly theoretical interest. We show that completeness can be preserved at practically rel-evant cost by introducing Prov C &B , a novel reformulation algo-rithm that instruments the chase to maintain provenance informa-tion connecting the joins added during the chase to the universal plan subqueries responsible for adding these joins. This allows it to directly "read off" the minimal reformulations from the result of a single chase of the universal plan, saving exponentially many chases of its subqueries. We exhibit natural scenarios yielding speedups of over two orders of magnitude between the execution of the best view-based rewriting found by a commercial query op-timizer and that of the best rewriting found by Prov C &B (which the optimizer misses because of limited reasoning about constraints).

International audience; Systems medicine is an interdisciplinary approach that integrates data from basic research and clinical practice to improve our understanding and treatment of diseases. Systems medicine can be seen as a further development of systems biology and bioinformatics towards applica-tions of clinical relevance. The term 'systems' refers to systems approaches, emphasizing a close integration of data generation with mathematical modeling [1-3]. The (mal)functioning of the human body is a complex process, characterized by multiple interactions between systems that act across multiple levels of structural and functional organization -from molecular reactions to cell-cell interac-tions in tissues to the physiology of organs and organ systems. Over the past decade, we have gained detailed insights into the structure and function of molecular, cellu-lar and organ-level systems, with technologies playing an important role in the generation of data at these different scales.

Abstract

The XR data model allows capturing rich semistructured corpora of documents (XML) with annotations (RDF triples). A simple query language for XR was presented in previous work, which allowed to retrieve results from from XR databases but not to build new XR content. This work makes two contributions. First, we present an extension of the query language giving powerful content structuring and grouping capabilities which enables flexible generation of new XR results. Second, we provide a query-view composition algorithm which enables the efficient evaluation of XR queries over previously defined XR views.

International audience; Since the beginning of the Semantic Web initiative, significant efforts have been invested in finding efficient ways to publish, store and query metadata on the Web. RDF and SPARQL have become the standard data model and query language, respectively, to describe resources on the Web. Large amounts of RDF data are now available either as stand-alone datasets or as metadata over semi-structured (typically XML) documents. The ability to apply RDF annotations over XML data emphasizes the need to represent and query data and metadata simultaneously. We propose XR, a novel hybrid data model capturing the structural aspects of XML data and the semantics of RDF, also enabling us to reason about XML data. Our model is general enough to describe pure XML or RDF datasets, as well as RDF-annotated XML data, where any XML node can act as a resource. This data model comes with the XRQ query language that combines features of both XQuery and SPARQL. To demonstrate the feasibility of this hybrid XML-RDF data management setting, and to validate its interest, we have developed an XR platform on top of well-known data management systems for XML and RDF. In particular, the platform features several XRQ query processing algorithms, whose performance is experimentally compared.

International audience; Distributed data management systems consist of peers that store, exchange and process data in order to collaboratively achieve a common goal, such as evaluating some query. We study the equivalence of such systems. We model a distributed system by a collection of Active XML documents, i.e., trees augmented with function calls for performing tasks such as sending, receiving and querying data. As our model is quite general, the equivalence problem turns out to be undecidable. However, we exhibit several restrictions of the model, for which equivalence can be effectively decided. We also study the computational complexity of the equivalence problem, and present an axiomatization of equivalence, in the form of a set of equivalence-preserving rewrite rules allowing us to optimize a system by rewriting it into an equivalent, but possibly more efficient system.

Abstract

National audience; Ce tutoriel propose un panorama de techniques utilisées pour décider dans le cadre du traitement de requêtes XML, si la réponse à une requête est incluse dans la réponse à une autre (quelle que soit la base de données sur laquelle on les évalue). Par la suite, nous considérons dans le même contexte, le problème de répondre à une requête XML utilisant les résultats pré-calculés, stockés, d'un ensemble d'autres requêtes XML, utilisées comme des vues matérialisées.
