Lead-based halide perovskites have gained significant prominence in recent years in optoelectronics and photovoltaics, owing to their exceptional optoelectronic properties. Nonetheless, the toxicity of lead (Pb) and the stability concern pose obstacles to their potential for future large-scale market development. Herein, stable lead-free Cs 3 Bi 2 I 9 (CBI) films are presented with smooth and compact morphologies synthesized via chemical vapor deposition (CVD), demonstrating their application as an UV photodetector in a self-powered way. The self-powered photodetectors (SPDs) exhibit remarkable characteristics, including a responsivity of 1.57 A W -1 and an impressive specific detectivity of 3.38 × 10 13 Jones under the illumination of 365 nm at zero bias. Furthermore, the SPDs exhibit a nominal decline (≈2.2%) in the photocurrent under constant illumination over 500 h, highlighting its impressive long-term operational stability. Finally, the real-time UV-detection capability of the device is demonstrated by measuring the photocurrent under various conditions, including room light and sunlight at different times. Memory B cells (mBCs) are characterized by their long-term stability, fast reactivation, and capability to rapidly differentiate into antibody-secreting cells (ASCs). However, the role of T cells in the differentiation of mBCs, in contrast to naive B cells, remains to be delineated. We study the role of T cells in mBC responses, using CD40L stimulation and autologous T-B co-cultures. Our results showed that increased CD40L levels led to a selective increased proliferation of IgM+ mBC, which did not class-switched, resulting in higher frequencies of IgM+ ASCs and a lower frequency of IgG+ ASCs. The IgG+/IgA+ mBCs were unaffected. We further compared the transcription of immune-related genes in IgM+ and IgG+ pre-plasmablasts cultured at high (500 ng/mL) and low (50 ng/mL) CD40L levels. In response to increased CD40L levels, both populations exhibited a core response to genes related to activation (TRAF1, AKT3, CD69, and CD80). However, they differed in genes related to cytokine/chemokine/homing interactions (CCL3/4/17, LTA, NKX2-3, BCL2 and IL21R) and cell-cell interactions (HLADR, CD40, and ICOSL), which were largely confined to IgG+ cells. Our findings revealed that in co-cultures with a high T-ratio, the response was similar to that found in cultures with high CD40L levels. These results suggest that IgG+ mBCs have a greater capacity for proliferation and T cell interaction, and weaker migration capabilities, leading to a preference for an IgG response over IgM in the short term. Objectives: Autoreactive B cells and interferon (IFN) signature are hallmarks of primary sjögren's syndrome (pSS), but how IFN signaling pathways influence autoantibody production and clinical manifestations remain unclear. More detailed studies hold promise for improved diagnostic methodologies and personalized treatment., Methods: We analyzed peripheral blood T and B cell subsets from 34 pSS patients and 38 healthy donors (HDs) at baseline and upon stimulation regarding their expression levels of type I and II IFN signaling molecules (STAT1/2, IRF1, IRF9). Additionally, we investigated how the levels of these molecules correlated with serological and clinical characteristics and performed ROC analysis., Results: Patients showed elevated IFN pathway molecules, including STAT1, STAT2 and IRF9 among most T and B cell subsets. We found a reduced ratio of phosphorylated STAT1 and STAT2 in patients in comparison to HDs, although B cells from patients were highly responsive by increased phosphorylation upon IFN stimulation. Correlation matrices showed further interrelations between STAT1, IRF1 and IRF9 in pSS. Levels of STAT1 and IRF9 in T and B cells correlated with the IFN type I marker Siglec-1 (CD169) on monocytes. High levels of STAT1 and IRF9 within pSS B cells were significantly associated with hypergammaglobulinemia as well as anti-SSA/anti-SSB autoantibodies. Elevated STAT1 levels were found in patients with extraglandular disease and could serve as a biomarker for this subgroup (p < 0.01). Notably, IRF9 levels in T and B cells correlated with EULAR Sjögren's syndrome disease activity index (ESSDAI)., Conclusion: Here, we provide evidence that in active pSS patients, enhanced IFN signaling incl. unphosphorylated STAT1 and STAT2 with IRFs entertain chronic T and B cell activation. Background: First pass effect (FPE), defined as single-pass complete or near complete reperfusion during endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) for large vessel occlusion (LVO) strokes, is a critical performance metric. Atrial fibrillation (AF)-related strokes have different clot composition compared with non-AF strokes, which may impact thrombectomy reperfusion results. We compared FPE rates in AF and non-AF stroke patients to evaluate if AF-related strokes had higher FPE rates., Methods: We conducted a post-hoc analysis of the DIRECT-SAFE trial data, including patients with retrievable clots on the initial angiographic run. Patients were categorized into AF and non-AF groups. The primary outcome was the presence or absence of FPE (single-pass, single-device resulting in complete/near complete reperfusion) in AF and non-AF groups. We used multivariable logistic regression to examine the association between FPE and AF, adjusting for thrombolysis pre-thrombectomy and clot location., Results: We included 253 patients (67 with AF, 186 without AF). AF patients were older (mean age: 74 years vs 67.5 years, p=0.001), had a higher proportion of females (55% vs 40%, p=0.044), and experienced more severe strokes (median National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score: 17 vs 14, p=0.009) than non-AF patients. No differences were observed in thrombolytic agent usage, time metrics, or clot location. AF patients achieved a higher proportion of FPE compared with non-AF patients (55.22% vs 37.3%, adjusted odds ratio 2.00 (95% CI 1.13 to 3.55), p=0.017)., Conclusions: AF-related strokes in LVO patients treated with EVT were associated with FPE. Bone marrow plasma cells (BMPC) are the correlate of humoral immunity, consistently releasing antibodies into the bloodstream. It remains unclear if BMPC reflect different activation environments or maturation of their precursors. Here we define human BMPC heterogeneity and track the recruitment of antibody-secreting cells (ASC) from SARS-CoV-2 vaccine immune reactions to the bone marrow (BM). Trajectories based on single-cell transcriptomes and repertoires of peripheral and BM ASC reveal sequential colonisation of BMPC compartments. In activated B cells, IL-21 suppresses CD19 expression, indicating that CD19 low -BMPC are derived from follicular, while CD19 high -BMPC originate from extrafollicular immune reactions. In primary immune reactions, both CD19 low - and CD19 high -BMPC compartments are populated. In secondary immune reactions, most BMPC are recruited to CD19 high -BMPC compartments, reflecting their origin from extrafollicular reactivations of memory B cells. A pattern also observable in vaccinated-convalescent individuals and upon diphtheria/tetanus/pertussis recall-vaccination. Herein, it is found that 3D transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD)-MoS 2 nanoflowers-grown on 2D tungsten oxide-anchored graphene nanosheets (MoS 2 @W-G) functions as a superior catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under both acidic and alkaline conditions. The optimized weight ratio of MoS 2 @W-G (MoS 2 :W-G/1.5:1) in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 achieves a low overpotential of 78 mV at 10 mA cm -2 , a small Tafel slope of 48 mV dec -1 , and a high exchange current density (0.321 mA cm⁻ 2 ). Furthermore, the same MoS 2 @W-G composite exhibits stable HER performance when using real seawater, with Faradaic efficiencies of 96 and 94% in acidic and alkaline media, respectively. Density functional theory calculations based on the hybrid MoS 2 @W-G structure model confirm that suitable hybridization of 3D MoS 2 and 2D W-G nanosheets can lower the hydrogen adsorption: Gibbs free energy (∆G H* ) from 1.89 eV for MoS 2 to -0.13 eV for the MoS 2 @W-G composite. The excellent HER activity of the 3D/2D hybridized MoS 2 @W-G composite arises from abundance of active heterostructure interfaces, optimizing the electrical configuration, thereby accelerating the adsorption and dissociation of H 2 O. Inflammation conditions are associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and cerebral palsy (CP), primarily observed in the peripheral immune system. However, the extent of neuro-inflammation and neuro-immune dysregulation remains poorly studied. In this study, we analyzed the composition of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to uncover the inflammatory mediators driving the neuro-immune system in ASD and CP patients. Our findings revealed that ASD patients had elevated levels of four inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-4, IL-21, and BAFF) compared to controls, while CP patients exhibited increased levels of eight inflammatory cytokines (IFN-γ, GM-CSF, TNF-α, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-17A and IL-12), one anti-inflammatory cytokine (IL-10), and five growth factors (GFs) (NGF-β, EGF, GDF-15, G-CSF and BMP-9) compared to both controls and ASD patients. Additionally, intrathecal infusion of autologous bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMNCs) led to a slight decrease in TGF-β and GDF-15 levels in the CSF of ASD and CP patients, respectively. Unsplinted attachment systems for implant overdentures offer various benefits for edentulous patients, including cost-effectiveness, enhanced cleansability, and less need for manual dexterity. This article describes a facially driven digital workflow for fabricating a maxillary implant overdenture retained by conometric-style attachments (Atlantis® Conus) with a palateless design opposing an implant overdenture retained by standard attachments (LOCATOR®). This procedure provides a predictable and accurate technique to digitally scan the master casts with wax rims for articulation and to guide the digital teeth design set-up for a predictable esthetic outcome. The removable prosthesis workflow involves virtual teeth set-up, a 3D-printed trial denture, a milled definitive prosthesis, and intraoral pick-up for both unsplinted attachment systems. The clinical and laboratory steps are described.

Background: Metabolic engineering for hyperaccumulation of lipids in vegetative tissues is a novel strategy for enhancing energy density and biofuel production from biomass crops. Energycane is a prime feedstock for this approach due to its high biomass production and resilience under marginal conditions. DIACYLGLYCEROL ACYLTRANSFERASE (DGAT) catalyzes the last and only committed step in the biosynthesis of triacylglycerol (TAG) and can be a rate-limiting enzyme for the production of TAG., Results: In this study, we explored the effect of intron-mediated enhancement (IME) on the expression of DGAT1 and resulting accumulation of TAG and total fatty acid (TFA) in leaf and stem tissues of energycane. To maximize lipid accumulation these evaluations were carried out by co-expressing the lipogenic transcription factor WRINKLED1 (WRI1) and the TAG protect factor oleosin (OLE1). Including an intron in the codon-optimized TmDGAT1 elevated the accumulation of its transcript in leaves by seven times on average based on 5 transgenic lines for each construct. Plants with WRI1 (W), DGAT1 with intron (Di), and OLE1 (O) expression (WDiO) accumulated TAG up to a 3.85% of leaf dry weight (DW), a 192-fold increase compared to non-modified energycane (WT) and a 3.8-fold increase compared to the highest accumulation under the intron-less gene combination (WDO). This corresponded to TFA accumulation of up to 8.4% of leaf dry weight, a 2.8-fold or 6.1-fold increase compared to WDO or WT, respectively. Co-expression of WDiO resulted in stem accumulations of TAG up to 1.14% of DW or TFA up to 2.08% of DW that exceeded WT by 57-fold or 12-fold and WDO more than twofold, respectively. Constitutive expression of these lipogenic "push pull and protect" factors correlated with biomass reduction., Conclusions: Intron-mediated enhancement (IME) of the expression of DGAT resulted in a step change in lipid accumulation of energycane and confirmed that under our experimental conditions it is rate limiting for lipid accumulation. IME should be applied to other lipogenic factors and metabolic engineering strategies. Combining semiconductor and noble metal nanostructures into a hybrid system has shown many complementary advantages in the optical properties, making them more attractive in practical applications. Herein, we prepared a semiconductor/noble metal hybrid system composed of Ag nanoparticles decorated on ZnO nanoplates acting as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate for probing methyl red. The tuning of the optical characteristics of the hybrid system was demonstrated through the changes in the absorption, fluorescence, and Raman spectra. The formation of the local electromagnetic field at the heterostructure interface plays a pivotal role in its SERS activity. Thanks to density functional theory calculations, methyl red's vibrational modes and symmetry properties were assigned to be consistent with the contribution of the neutral trans conformer and protonated state. Then, using Herzberg-Teller-surface selection rules, these assignments strongly support the realization that the SERS mechanism based on the ZnO/Ag substrate has a significant electromagnetic contribution versus the Ag substrate in which charge transfer plays a pivotal role. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first investigation that has clarified the mechanism and advantage of semiconductor/metal (ZnO/Ag nanostructures) even over noble metals (Ag nanoparticles) in SERS applications. Moreover, the SERS behavior based on the ZnO/Ag substrate was also examined and the results indicated high sensitivity and good repeatability.

In this work, a NiCo bimetallic ZIF (BMZIF) dodecahedron material has been synthesized by the precipitation approach and then used for simultaneously photoelectrocatalytic degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and hydrogen production. The combination of Ni/Co loading in ZIF structure increased the specific surface area 1484 (m 2  g -1 ) and photocurrent density (0.4 mA cm -2 ), which can facilitate the good charge transfer efficiency. In presence of peroxymonosulfate (PMS, 0.1 mM), the complete degradation of SMX (10 mg L -1 ) was achieved at initial pH of 7 within 24 min, with the pseudo-first-order rate constants of 0.18 min -1 and TOC removal efficiency of 85 %. Radical scavenger experiments affirm that • OH radicals were the primary oxygen reactive species to drive the SMX degradation. Along with SMX degradation at the anode, the H 2 production was observed at the cathode (140 μmol cm -2  h -1 ), which was 1.5 and 3 times higher than that of Co-ZIF and Ni-ZIF, respectively. The superior catalytic performance of BMZIF was assigned to the distinctive internal structure and synergistic effect between ZIF and Ni/Co bimetals, which improves light absorption and charge conduction efficiency. Objectives: To evaluate the practice of TB care among physicians at private facilities., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using questionnaires on knowledge, attitude, and practice related to TB care. The responses to these scales were used to explore latent constructs and calculate the standardized continuous scores for these domains. We described the percentages of participant's responses and explored their associated factors using multiple linear regression., Results: A total of 232 physicians were recruited. The most important gaps in practice included requesting chest imaging to confirm TB diagnosis (~80%), not testing HIV for confirmed active TB cases (~50%), only requesting sputum testing for MDR-TB cases (65%), only requesting follow-up examination at the end of the treatment course (64%), and not requesting sputum testing at follow-up (54%). Surgical mask was preferred to N95 respirator when examining TB patients. Prior TB training was associated with better knowledge and less stigmatizing attitude, which were associated with better practice in both TB management and precautions., Conclusion: There were important gaps in knowledge, attitude, and practice of TB care among private providers. Better knowledge was associated with positive attitude towards TB and better practice. Biochar made from agricultural waste is gaining more attention in energy field due to its sustainability, low cost, apart from having high supercapacitance performance. Also, it has a wide range of environmental applications, including wastewater treatment, upgrading soil fertility, contaminant immobilization, and in situ carbon sequestration. The existing thermo-chemical methodologies for converting agricultural waste into a sustainable material i.e. biochar and the role of activation agents in enhancing the performance of these materials were critically analyzed and discussed. An overview of recent trends in agricultural waste-derived biochar for supercapacitor electrodes is highlighted in this review that emphasizes green circular economy for encouraging net-zero utility of agriculture waste biomass. The roles of various newly prepared "green" electrolytes in reducing the negative consequences of supercapacitor is also reviewed. Background: Case-based surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) provides more actionable data than isolate- or sample-based surveillance. We developed A Clinically Oriented antimicrobial Resistance surveillance Network (ACORN) as a lightweight but comprehensive platform, in which we combine clinical data collection with diagnostic stewardship, microbiological data collection and visualisation of the linked clinical-microbiology dataset. Data are compatible with WHO GLASS surveillance and can be stratified by syndrome and other metadata. Summary metrics can be visualised and fed back directly for clinical decision-making and to inform local treatment guidelines and national policy. Methods: An ACORN pilot was implemented in three hospitals in Southeast Asia (1 paediatric, 2 general) to collect clinical and microbiological data from patients with community- or hospital-acquired pneumonia, sepsis, or meningitis. The implementation package included tools to capture site and laboratory capacity information, guidelines on diagnostic stewardship, and a web-based data visualisation and analysis platform. Results: Between December 2019 and October 2020, 2294 patients were enrolled with 2464 discrete infection episodes (1786 community-acquired, 518 healthcare-associated and 160 hospital-acquired). Overall, 28-day mortality was 8.7%. Third generation cephalosporin resistance was identified in 54.2% (39/72) of E. coli and 38.7% (12/31) of K. pneumoniae isolates . Almost a quarter of S. aureus isolates were methicillin resistant (23.0%, 14/61). 290/2464 episodes could be linked to a pathogen, highlighting the level of enrolment required to achieve an acceptable volume of isolate data. However, the combination with clinical metadata allowed for more nuanced interpretation and immediate feedback of results. Conclusions: ACORN was technically feasible to implement and acceptable at site level. Human B lymphocytes are attractive targets for immunotherapies in autoantibody-mediated diseases. Gene editing technologies could provide a powerful tool to determine gene regulatory networks regulating B cell differentiation into plasma cells, and identify novel therapeutic targets for prevention and treatment of autoimmune disorders. Here, we describe a new approach that uses CRISPR-Cas9 technology to target genes in primary human B cells in vitro for identifying plasma cell regulators. We found that sgRNA and Cas9 components can be efficiently delivered into primary human B cells through RD114-pseudotyped retroviral vectors. Using this system, we achieved approximately 80% of gene knockout efficiency. We disrupted expression of a triad of transcription factors, IRF4, PRDM1, and XBP1, and showed that human B cell survival and plasma cell differentiation are severely impaired. Specifically, that IRF4, PRDM1, and XBP1 were expressed at different stages during plasma cell differentiation, IRF4 , PRDM1, and XBP1 -targeted B cells failed to progress to the pre-plasmablast, plasma cell state, and plasma cell survival, respectively. Objective: Altered composition of the B cell compartment in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is characterized by expanded plasmablast and IgD-CD27- double-negative B cell populations. Previous studies showed that double-negative B cells represent a heterogeneous subset, and further characterization is needed., Methods: We analyzed 2 independent cohorts of healthy donors and SLE patients, using a combined approach of flow cytometry (for 16 healthy donors and 28 SLE patients) and mass cytometry (for 18 healthy donors and 24 SLE patients) and targeted RNA-Seq analysis. To compare B cell subset formation during the acute immune response versus that during autoimmune disease, we investigated healthy donors at various time points after receipt of the BNT162b2 messenger RNA COVID-19 vaccine and patients with acute SARS-CoV-2 infection, using flow cytometry., Results: We found that IgD-CD27+ switched and atypical IgD-CD27- memory B cells, the levels of which were increased in SLE patients, represented heterogeneous populations composed of 3 different subsets each. CXCR5+CD19 intermediate , CXCR5-CD19 high , and CXCR5-CD19 low populations were found in the switched memory and double-negative compartments, suggesting the relatedness of IgD-CD27+ and IgD-CD27- B cells. We characterized a hitherto unknown and antigen-experienced CXCR5-CD19 low subset that was enhanced in SLE patients, had a plasmablast phenotype with diminished B cell receptor responsiveness, and expressed CD38, CD95, CD71, PRDM1, XBP1, and IRF4. Levels of CXCR5-CD19 low subsets were increased and correlated with plasmablast frequencies in SLE patients and in healthy donors who received BNT162b2, suggesting their interrelationship and contribution to plasmacytosis. The detection of CXCR5-CD19 low B cells among both CD27+ and CD27- populations calls into question the role of CD27 as a reliable marker of B cell differentiation., Conclusion: Our data suggest that CXCR5-CD19 low B cells are precursors of plasmablasts. Background: The metabolic engineering of high-biomass crops for lipid production in their vegetative biomass has recently been proposed as a strategy to elevate energy density and lipid yields for biodiesel production. Energycane and sugarcane are highly polyploid, interspecific hybrids between Saccharum officinarum and Saccharum spontaneum that differ in the amount of ancestral contribution to their genomes. This results in greater biomass yield and persistence in energycane, which makes it the preferred target crop for biofuel production., Results: Here, we report on the hyperaccumulation of triacylglycerol (TAG) in energycane following the overexpression of the lipogenic factors Diacylglycerol acyltransferase1-2 (DGAT1-2) and Oleosin1 (OLE1) in combination with RNAi suppression of SUGAR-DEPENDENT1 (SDP1) and Trigalactosyl diacylglycerol1 (TGD1). TAG accumulated up to 1.52% of leaf dry weight (DW,) a rate that was 30-fold that of non-modified energycane, in addition to almost doubling the total fatty acid content in leaves to 4.42% of its DW. Antibody-secreting cells (ASCs) contribute to immunity through production of antibodies and cytokines. Identification of specific markers of ASC would allow selective targeting of these cells in several disease contexts. Here, we performed an unbiased, large-scale protein screening, and identified twelve new molecules that are specifically expressed by murine ASCs. Expression of these markers, particularly CD39, CD81, CD130, and CD326, is stable and offers an improved resolution for ASC identification. We accessed their expression in germ-free conditions and in T cell deficient mice, showing that at least in part their expression is controlled by microbial- and T cell-derived signals. Further analysis of lupus mice revealed the presence of a subpopulation of LAG-3 - plasma cells, co-expressing high amounts of CD39 and CD326 in the bone marrow. This population was IgM + and correlated with IgM anti-dsDNA autoantibodies in sera. Importantly, we found that CD39, CD81, CD130, and CD326 are also expressed by human peripheral blood and bone marrow ASCs. B lymphocytes play a central role in immunity owing to their unique antibody-producing capacity that provides protection against certain infections and during vaccination. In autoimmune diseases, B cells can gain pathogenic relevance through autoantibody production, antigen presentation, and proinflammatory cytokine secretion. Recent data indicate that B and plasma cells can function as regulators through the production of immunoregulatory cytokines and/or employing checkpoint molecules. In this study, we review the key findings that define subsets of B and plasma cells with pathogenic and protective functions in autoimmunity. In addition to harsh B-cell depletion, we discuss the strategies that have the potential to reinstall the balance of pathogenic and protective B cells with the potential of more specific and personalized therapies., (Copyright © 2021 The Authors. Magnetically separable core/shell Fe 3 O 4 /ZnO heteronanostructures (MSCSFZ) were synthesized by a facile approach, and their application for enhanced solar photodegradation of RhB was studied. The formation mechanism of MSCSFZ was proposed, in which Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles served as a template for supporting and anchoring the ZnO crystal layer as the shells. The morphology of MSCSFZ can be varied from spherical to rice seed-like structures, and the bandgap was able to be narrowed down to 2.78 eV by controlling the core-shell ratios. As a result, the MSCSFZ exhibited excellent visible-light photocatalytic activity for degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) in aqueous solution as compared to the controlled ZnO nanoparticles. Moreover, MSCSFZ could be easily detached from RhB solution and maintained its performance after 4 cycles of usage. Intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetrators are often husbands. Understanding factors pertaining to women's male partners is essential for programming interventions against IPV. The objective of the study was to describe husband-related social and behavioural risk factors and assess how they are associated with IPV during pregnancy. Cross-sectional data were collected among 1309 pregnant women with husbands in Dong Anh district, Vietnam. Information on sociodemographic characteristics of husbands, the husband's behaviour and the husband's involvement in pregnancy care was indirectly collected via women's report at first antenatal care visit. Data on exposure to intimate partner violence during pregnancy were collected when the women returned for antenatal care in 30-34 gestational weeks. Logistic regression analyses were used to measure the relationships between IPV during pregnancy and risk factors from the husband. Pregnant women who had husbands who were younger or blue-collar worker/farmer/unemployed had more likelihood to be exposed to IPV. Women with husbands who drank alcohol before sexual intercourse and gambled were more likely to be exposed to IPV repeated times. Those with husbands who had intentions of having a child had over three times increased OR to be exposed to IPV once (AOR = 3.2, 95% CI 1.1-9.7). If the husband had a preference for sons, the woman had 1.5 times increased OR (AOR = 1.5; 95% CI 1.1-1.9) to be exposed to IPV repeated times during pregnancy. This study highlights significant associations between IPV and maternal perceptions of husbands' behaviours and involvement in pregnancy. Findings may help to identify at-risk pregnant women to IPV and guide the development of targeted interventions to prevent IPV from husbands.

Cardiomyocytes (CMs) lost during cardiac injury and heart failure (HF) cannot be replaced due to their limited proliferative capacity. Regenerating the failing heart by promoting CM cell-cycle re-entry is an ambitious solution, currently vigorously pursued. Some genes have been proven to promote endogenous CM proliferation, believed to be preceded by CM dedifferentiation, wherein terminally differentiated CMs are initially reversed back to the less mature state which precedes cell division. However, very little else is known about CM dedifferentiation which remains poorly defined. We lack robust molecular markers and proper understanding of the mechanisms driving dedifferentiation. Even the term dedifferentiation is debated because there is no objective evidence of pluripotency, and could rather reflect CM plasticity instead. Nonetheless, the significance of CM transition states on cardiac function, and whether they necessarily lead to CM proliferation, remains unclear. This review summarises the current state of knowledge of both natural and experimentally induced CM dedifferentiation in non-mammalian vertebrates (primarily the zebrafish) and mammals, as well as the phenotypes and molecular mechanisms involved. The significance and potential challenges of studying CM dedifferentiation are also discussed. In summary, CM dedifferentiation, essential for CM plasticity, may have an important role in heart regeneration, thereby contributing to the prevention and treatment of heart disease. B cells are primarily known for their capacity to differentiate into antibody-secreting cells (ASCs). ASCs are usually viewed as terminally differentiated cells sharing a unique phenotype. However, it lately became evident that ASCs exist in a variety of subsets differing by their lifespan, anatomic location, and immunological function. Thus, ASCs can exist as long-lived plasma cells (LLPC) that can persist for years in a nonproliferating state within particular niches in the bone marrow (BM), or as short-lived plasma cells (SLPC) that are primarily found in secondary lymphoid organs or inflamed tissues and wane upon the termination of the associated immune response. Another layer of ASC diversity was uncovered with the discovery of their capacity to produce various pro- or anti-inflammatory cytokines. Notably, a subset of natural regulatory plasma cells characterized by the distinctive expression of the inhibitory receptor lymphocyte activation gene (LAG)-3 and a unique capacity to produce interleukin (IL)-10 upon stimulation was recently identified. Here, we describe how to immunophenotypically characterize murine plasma cells as well as how to isolate them using cell sorting, with a special focus on these recently described natural regulatory plasma cells.

Sex steroid hormones are potential biomarkers of reproductive function in teleost fish, but their measurement continues to rely on antibody-based assays. The objective of this study was to optimize a robust and simultaneous liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method for measurement of eight steroid hormones (cortisol, 11-ketotestosterone, estradiol, 17α-ethynyl estradiol, estrone, estriol, progesterone and testosterone) in fish plasma. The extraction was followed by liquid-liquid extraction with tert-butyl methyl ether and time scheduled multi-reaction monitoring (sMRM) was used for quantitation of steroids. Validation of method performance using charcoal-stripped human plasma showed extraction recoveries for eight steroids ranged from 85.5 to 108.2% with matrix effects > 80%. The limits of quantitation were 0.01 pg/μL for testosterone, 0.05 pg/μL for cortisol and progesterone, 0.1 pg/μL for 11-ketotestosterone, estradiol and estrone, 0.125 pg/μL for estriol and 0.25 pg/μL for 17α-ethynyl estradiol. The proposed method was applied to plasma samples of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) collected from contaminated (Lake Apopka) and reference sites (Wildcate Lake) in Florida. Concentrations of testosterone, cortisol, estradiol and estrone were significantly different in female fish, but plasma concentration of cortisol was only statistically different in male fish between two sites (P < 0.05). The diffusion MRI signal arising from neurons can be numerically simulated by solving the Bloch-Torrey partial differential equation. In this paper we present the Neuron Module that we implemented within the Matlab-based diffusion MRI simulation toolbox SpinDoctor. SpinDoctor uses finite element discretization and adaptive time integration to solve the Bloch-Torrey partial differential equation for general diffusion-encoding sequences, at multiple b-values and in multiple diffusion directions. In order to facilitate the diffusion MRI simulation of realistic neurons by the research community, we constructed finite element meshes for a group of 36 pyramidal neurons and a group of 29 spindle neurons whose morphological descriptions were found in the publicly available neuron repository NeuroMorpho.Org. These finite elements meshes range from having 15,163 nodes to 622,553 nodes. We also broke the neurons into the soma and dendrite branches and created finite elements meshes for these cell components. Through the Neuron Module, these neuron and cell components finite element meshes can be seamlessly coupled with the functionalities of SpinDoctor to provide the diffusion MRI signal attributable to spins inside neurons. We make these meshes and the source code of the Neuron Module available to the public as an open-source package. To illustrate some potential uses of the Neuron Module, we show numerical examples of the simulated diffusion MRI signals in multiple diffusion directions from whole neurons as well as from the soma and dendrite branches, and include a comparison of the high b-value behavior between dendrite branches and whole neurons. In addition, we demonstrate that the neuron meshes can be used to perform Monte-Carlo diffusion MRI simulations as well. We show that at equivalent accuracy, if only one gradient direction needs to be simulated, SpinDoctor is faster than a GPU implementation of Monte-Carlo, but if many gradient directions need to be simulated, there is a break-even point when the GPU implementation of Monte-Carlo becomes faster than SpinDoctor. Furthermore, we numerically compute the eigenfunctions and the eigenvalues of the Bloch-Torrey and the Laplace operators on the neuron geometries using a finite elements discretization, in order to give guidance in the choice of the space and time discretization parameters for both finite elements and Monte-Carlo approaches. Finally, we perform a statistical study on the set of 65 neurons to test some candidate biomakers that can potentially indicate the soma size. The complex transverse water proton magnetization subject to diffusion-encoding magnetic field gradient pulses in a heterogeneous medium such as brain tissue can be modeled by the Bloch-Torrey partial differential equation. The spatial integral of the solution of this equation in realistic geometry provides a gold-standard reference model for the diffusion MRI signal arising from different tissue micro-structures of interest. A closed form representation of this reference diffusion MRI signal called matrix formalism, which makes explicit the link between the Laplace eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the biological cell and its diffusion MRI signal, was derived 20 years ago. In addition, once the Laplace eigendecomposition has been computed and saved, the diffusion MRI signal can be calculated for arbitrary diffusion-encoding sequences and b-values at negligible additional cost. Up to now, this representation, though mathematically elegant, has not been often used as a practical model of the diffusion MRI signal, due to the difficulties of calculating the Laplace eigendecomposition in complicated geometries. In this paper, we present a simulation framework that we have implemented inside the MATLAB-based diffusion MRI simulator SpinDoctor that efficiently computes the matrix formalism representation for realistic neurons using the finite element method. We show that the matrix formalism representation requires a few hundred eigenmodes to match the reference signal computed by solving the Bloch-Torrey equation when the cell geometry originates from realistic neurons. As expected, the number of eigenmodes required to match the reference signal increases with smaller diffusion time and higher b-values. We also convert the eigenvalues to a length scale and illustrate the link between the length scale and the oscillation frequency of the eigenmode in the cell geometry. We give the transformation that links the Laplace eigenfunctions to the eigenfunctions of the Bloch-Torrey operator and compute the Bloch-Torrey eigenfunctions and eigenvalues. Nitrous oxide (N 2 O) is a weak anesthetic gas that was first used in 1844 in the field of dental anesthesia. However, currently, N 2 O is being abused for entertainment purposes in the form of N 2 O-filled balloons, called funky balls , which can cause many adverse effects, especially nervous system injury. This study aimed to investigate the detailed clinical and subclinical features associated with N 2 O intoxication. We retrospectively reviewed 47 patients diagnosed with N 2 O intoxication, from May 2018 to July 2019, and collected demographic data, clinical and laboratory tests, and spinal cord magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings. The mean time of funky ball use was 8.8 months, with a mean use of 36.3 balls per day. All patients presented with superficial sensory disorders. Reductions in muscle strength, decreased vibration sensation, and decreased or lost tendon reflexes were the most common clinical signs of N 2 O intoxication. Romberg sign and Lhermitte sign were observed in 39 patients (83%) and 21 patients (44.7%), respectively. Spinal cord lesions on MRI were observed in 32 patients (68.1%), which mostly presented with an inverted V sign. The total duration of N 2 O use, the number of days of using N 2 O per week, and the presence of Lhermitte sign (P<0.05) were significantly different between patients with and without spinal cord lesions on MRI. Serum levels of homocysteine and vitamin B12 were significantly different between the time of admission and discharge (P<0.05). Our study indicated that the days of using N 2 O per week was significantly associated with Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI) on MRI. According to the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, a cutoff days of using per week value of 2.5 days could predict SCI with a sensitivity of 81.3%, a specificity of 73.3%, and an area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.813. Outbreaks of emerging coronaviruses in the past two decades and the current pandemic of a novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) that emerged in China highlight the importance of this viral family as a zoonotic public health threat. To gain a better understanding of coronavirus presence and diversity in wildlife at wildlife-human interfaces in three southern provinces in Viet Nam 2013-2014, we used consensus Polymerase Chain Reactions to detect coronavirus sequences. In comparison to previous studies, we observed high proportions of positive samples among field rats (34.0%, 239/702) destined for human consumption and insectivorous bats in guano farms (74.8%, 234/313) adjacent to human dwellings. Most notably among field rats, the odds of coronavirus RNA detection significantly increased along the supply chain from field rats sold by traders (reference group; 20.7% positivity, 39/188) by a factor of 2.2 for field rats sold in large markets (32.0%, 116/363) and 10.0 for field rats sold and served in restaurants (55.6%, 84/151). Coronaviruses were also detected in rodents on the majority of wildlife farms sampled (60.7%, 17/28). These coronaviruses were found in the Malayan porcupines (6.0%, 20/331) and bamboo rats (6.3%, 6/96) that are raised on wildlife farms for human consumption as food. We identified six known coronaviruses in bats and rodents, clustered in three Coronaviridae genera, including the Alpha-, Beta-, and Gammacoronaviruses. Our analysis also suggested either mixing of animal excreta in the environment or interspecies transmission of coronaviruses, as both bat and avian coronaviruses were detected in rodent feces on wildlife farms. The mixing of multiple coronaviruses, and their apparent amplification along the wildlife supply chain into restaurants, suggests maximal risk for end consumers and likely underpins the mechanisms of zoonotic spillover to people., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Herein, a fluorescence turn off-on nanosensor has been successfully developed using functionalized N-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) as the label-free sensing probe for the ultrasensitive detection of Cu 2+ ions first and then ciprofloxacin (CIP), one of the most commonly used antibiotics for disease control, in the presence of bipyridine. The homogeneous and narrowly distributed N-CDs with a mean size of 5.7 nm and a high quantum yield of 84% are fabricated via the hydrothermal method in the presence of citric acid and ethylenediamine as the carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. The Cu 2+ ions serve as both analyte and fluorescence quenchers in the sensing platform of N-CDs, and a good linear response to Cu 2+ in the range of 0.01-0.35 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.076 nM is observed. Then, 0.35 μM Cu 2+ is used as the fluorescence quencher of N-CDs to build up the fluorescence turn off-on sensing probe for the detection of CIP using bipyridine (bipy) as the linker for CIP and Cu 2+ ions. The addition of CIP to the bipy-Cu@N-CD composites triggers the formation of CIP-bipy-Cu conjugate as well as the release of N-CDs, resulting in the recovery of fluorescence intensity after 6 min of incubation. The sensing probe exhibits a two-phase linear response to CIP in the concentration range of 0.05-1 and 1-50 μM with a LOD of 0.4 nM. In addition, the bipy-Cu@N-CD probe shows high sensitivity toward CIP over the 19 other interferences. Good recovery of 96-110% is also observed when 0.1-0.9 μM CIP is spiked into the real samples. Results obtained in this study clearly demonstrate a newly developed sensing platform with rapid detection of metal ions and antibiotics, which can open an avenue to develop highly efficient and robust sensing probes for the detection of metal ions, organic metabolites, and biomarkers in biological applications.

Exosomes are nano-scale and closed membrane vesicles which are promising for therapeutic applications due to exosome-enclosed therapeutic molecules such as DNA, small RNAs, proteins and lipids. Recently, it has been demonstrated that mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-derived exosomes have capacity to regulate many biological events associated with wound healing process, such as cell proliferation, cell migration and blood vessel formation. This study investigated the regenerative potentials for cutaneous tissue, in regard to growth factors associated with wound healing and skin cell proliferation and migration, by exosomes released from primary MSCs originated from bone marrow (BM), adipose tissue (AD), and umbilical cord (UC) under serum- and xeno-free condition. We found crucial wound healing-mediated growth factors, such as vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A), fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF-2), hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), and platelet-derived growth factor BB (PDGF-BB) in exosomes derived from all three MSC sources. However, expression levels of these growth factors in exosomes were influenced by MSC origins, especially transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) was only detected in UCMSC-derived exosomes. All exosomes released by three MSCs sources induced keratinocyte and fibroblast proliferation and migration; and, the induction of cell migration is a dependent manner with the higher dose of exosomes was used (20 μg), the faster migration rate was observed. Additionally, the influences of exosomes on cell proliferation and migration was associated with exosome origins and also target cells of exosomes that the greatest induction of primary dermal fibroblasts belongs to BMMSC-derived exosomes and keratinocytes belongs to UCMSC-derived exosomes. The human insular cortex is a heterogeneous brain structure which plays an integrative role in guiding behavior. The cytoarchitectonic organization of the human insula has been investigated over the last century using postmortem brains but there has been little progress in noninvasive in vivo mapping of its microstructure and large-scale functional circuitry. Quantitative modeling of multi-shell diffusion MRI data from 413 participants revealed that human insula microstructure differs significantly across subdivisions that serve distinct cognitive and affective functions. Insular microstructural organization was mirrored in its functionally interconnected circuits with the anterior cingulate cortex that anchors the salience network, a system important for adaptive switching of cognitive control systems. Furthermore, insular microstructural features, confirmed in Macaca mulatta, were linked to behavior and predicted individual differences in cognitive control ability. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of mechanical thrombectomy with a direct aspiration first-pass technique (ADAPT) using large-bore catheters in patients with acute ischemic stroke due to large vessel occlusion (LVO) in a hospital in Vietnam., Methods: This was a retrospective review of patients with acute ischemic stroke due to LVO who were diagnosed and underwent mechanical thrombectomy using ADAPT with large-bore catheters at Bach Mai Hospital from January 2017 to June 2018., Results: Seventy-three patients (47.9% female; age: 61.29 ± 14.49 years) met study criteria. The average procedure duration was 45.09 ± 38.26 min. Successful recanalization post-ADAPT (thrombolysis in cerebral infarction 2b-3) was achieved in 72.6% (53/73) of patients. Good functional outcome (Modified Rankin Scale 0-2) at 3 months was achieved in 50.7% (37/73), with poor functional outcome in 24.7% (18/73). The 90-day mortality rate was 24.7% (18/73). The hemorrhagic transformation rate was 31.6%, in which 19.2% were symptomatic. Vessel perforation occurred in 5.5% (4/73) of patients but in all cases was associated with the guidewire and not the reperfusion catheter. Vessel dissection occurred in 1.4% (1/73) and vasospasm in 5.5% (4/73) of patients., Conclusion: Mechanical thrombectomy using ADAPT with large-bore catheters for acute ischemic stroke due to LVO is a method that yielded good results in recanalization and clinical recovery in a Vietnamese patient population., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest., (Copyright: © 2020 Asian Journal of Neurosurgery.)

Introduction: Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a chronic condition, triggered by reflux through the saphenous vein network., Aim: To determine the efficacy of endovenous laser ablation (LA) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for CVI treatment in the lower extremities, at the Bach Mai Radiology Center., Methods: This retrospective study was approved by the institutional review board of Bach Mai Hospital. The study recruited 49 people, from August 2016 to April 2018, with recurrent venous insufficiency in the lower extremities and measured 56 ablated veins., Results: In this study, 8 patients (10 veins, with a mean diameter of 5.83 ± 0.96 mm) were treated with RFA, and 41 patients (46 veins, with a mean diameter of 7.96 ± 3.47 mm) were treated with LA. The occlusion rates for LA- and RFA-treated veins were very effective, at 95.7% and 90%, respectively. No significant differences in occlusion rates or clinical improvements were observed between the two ablation methods. On the first day post-treatment, the visual analog score (VAS) value for the LA group was significantly higher than that for the RFA group. Furthermore, ecchymosis, 1 day after treatment, and hyperpigmentation, paresthesia, and numbness, 1 month after treatment, were only observed in the LA group., Conclusion: Both LA and RFA were minimally-invasive and safe therapies. No serious complications requiring further interventions were reported and the treatment effectively improved the clinical symptoms of patients. Background: This study aims to report our experience with cerebral aneurysms, which may improve in the treatment with the flow-diverter stent and follow up., Methods: This study was conducted in a consecutive series of 130 patients. 134 procedures were performed for treating these patients in Hanoi Medical University Hospital and Bach Mai Hospital from January 2012 to April 2017. 143 flow diverter stents (Pipeline, FRED and SILK) were used. Aneurysm morphology, stent patency and cerebral parenchyma before and after intervention were analyzed on images of digital subtraction angiography (DSA), computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR). The follow-up data after 3-6 months and 12 months were recorded., Results: In 130 patients (31 men, 99 women), aneurysms of internal carotid artery were mostly common (92.6%), especially in cavernous (35.1%) and in para-ophthalmic (40.3%) segments. 83 cases (61.9%) had wide-neck aneurysms, and 16 cases (11.9%) had multiple aneurysms, and only 5 cases (3.7%) had blister-liked aneurysms. Endovascular treatment was successfully performed at rate of 94.8%. In 3 patients, the stent could not be delivered. Mortality and morbidity rates were 1.5% and 3.7%, respectively. MRI and MSCT follow-up at 3 months showed complete or incomplete occlusions of aneurysms was 7.4% or 17.5%, respectively. 3 patients experienced a thromboembolic event (4.3%)., Conclusions: Intracranial aneurysms of cavernous and para-ophthalmic segments of internal carotid artery are mostly common with wide-neck and multi aneurysms. In the fire ant Solenopsis invicta, a supergene composed of ~600 genes and having two variants, SB and Sb, regulates colony social form. In single queen colonies, all individuals carry only the SB allele, while in multiple queen colonies, some individuals carry the Sb allele. In this study, we characterized genes with copy number variation between SB and Sb-carrying individuals. We showed extensive acquisition of gene duplicates in the Sb genome, with some likely involved in polygyne-related phenotypes. We found 260 genes with copy number differences between SB and Sb, of which 239 have greater copy number in Sb. We observed transposable element (TE) accumulation on Sb, likely due to the accumulation of repetitive elements on the nonrecombining chromosome. We found a weak correlation between TE copy number and differential expression, suggesting some TEs may still be proliferating in Sb while many of the duplicated TEs have presumably been silenced. Among the 115 non-TE genes with higher copy in Sb, enzymes responsible for cuticular hydrocarbon synthesis were highly represented. These include a desaturase and an elongase, both potentially responsible for differential queen odour and likely beneficial for polygyne ants. These genes seem to have translocated into the supergene from other chromosomes and proliferated by multiple duplication events. While the presence of TEs in supergenes is well documented, little is known about duplication of non-TE genes and their possible adaptive role. The numerical simulation of the diffusion MRI signal arising from complex tissue micro-structures is helpful for understanding and interpreting imaging data as well as for designing and optimizing MRI sequences. The discretization of the Bloch-Torrey equation by finite elements is a more recently developed approach for this purpose, in contrast to random walk simulations, which has a longer history. While finite element discretization is more difficult to implement than random walk simulations, the approach benefits from a long history of theoretical and numerical developments by the mathematical and engineering communities. In particular, software packages for the automated solutions of partial differential equations using finite element discretization, such as FEniCS, are undergoing active support and development. However, because diffusion MRI simulation is a relatively new application area, there is still a gap between the simulation needs of the MRI community and the available tools provided by finite element software packages. In this paper, we address two potential difficulties in using FEniCS for diffusion MRI simulation. First, we simplified software installation by the use of FEniCS containers that are completely portable across multiple platforms. Second, we provide a portable simulation framework based on Python and whose code is open source. This simulation framework can be seamlessly integrated with cloud computing resources such as Google Colaboratory notebooks working on a web browser or with Google Cloud Platform with MPI parallelization. We show examples illustrating the accuracy, the computational times, and parallel computing capabilities. The framework contributes to reproducible science and open-source software in computational diffusion MRI with the hope that it will help to speed up method developments and stimulate research collaborations., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. Antibodies are key to cutaneous host defense and inflammation. Despite their importance, the mechanisms by which skin antibodies are sustained are poorly described. Here, we identified that, in addition to antibody production in lymphoid tissues, plasma cells reside in healthy mouse and human skin. In naïve mice, IgM was the predominant isotype produced in skin. Skin plasma cells developed independently of T cells and microbiota. Importantly, chronic skin inflammation promoted the massive accumulation of IgM-secreting cells, and cutaneous immunization directed both T cell-dependent and -independent antigen-specific IgM-secreting cells into skin. Unlike their counterparts in lymphoid tissues, cutaneous IgM-secreting cells were completely dependent on survival factors such as a proliferation-inducing ligand or B cell-activating factor, which were constitutively expressed and upregulated during inflammation in skin. Our data support a model in which skin plasma cells supply natural and adaptive IgM to the cutaneous environment, thereby supporting homeostatic skin barrier functions and providing defense against pathogen intrusion. The complex transverse water proton magnetization subject to diffusion-encoding magnetic field gradient pulses in a heterogeneous medium can be modeled by the multiple compartment Bloch-Torrey partial differential equation. Under the assumption of negligible water exchange between compartments, the time-dependent apparent diffusion coefficient can be directly computed from the solution of a diffusion equation subject to a time-dependent Neumann boundary condition. This paper describes a publicly available MATLAB toolbox called SpinDoctor that can be used 1) to solve the Bloch-Torrey partial differential equation in order to simulate the diffusion magnetic resonance imaging signal; 2) to solve a diffusion partial differential equation to obtain directly the apparent diffusion coefficient; 3) to compare the simulated apparent diffusion coefficient with a short-time approximation formula. The partial differential equations are solved by P1 finite elements combined with built-in MATLAB routines for solving ordinary differential equations. The finite element mesh generation is performed using an external package called Tetgen. SpinDoctor provides built-in options of including 1) spherical cells with a nucleus; 2) cylindrical cells with a myelin layer; 3) an extra-cellular space enclosed either a) in a box or b) in a tight wrapping around the cells; 4) deformation of canonical cells by bending and twisting; 5) permeable membranes; Built-in diffusion-encoding pulse sequences include the Pulsed Gradient Spin Echo and the Oscillating Gradient Spin Echo. We describe in detail how to use the SpinDoctor toolbox. We validate SpinDoctor simulations using reference signals computed by the Matrix Formalism method. We compare the accuracy and computational time of SpinDoctor simulations with Monte-Carlo simulations and show significant speed-up of SpinDoctor over Monte-Carlo simulations in complex geometries. We also illustrate several extensions of SpinDoctor functionalities, including the incorporation of T 2 relaxation, the simulation of non-standard diffusion-encoding sequences, as well as the use of externally generated geometrical meshes., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. Queen discrimination behavior in the fire ant Solenopsis invicta maintains its two types of societies: colonies with one (monogyne) or many (polygyne) queens, yet the underlying genetic mechanism is poorly understood. This behavior is controlled by two supergene alleles, SB and Sb , with ~600 genes. Polygyne workers, having either the SB/SB or SB/Sb genotype, accept additional SB/Sb queens into their colonies but kill SB/SB queens. In contrast, monogyne workers, all SB/SB , reject all additional queens regardless of genotype. Because the SB and Sb alleles have suppressed recombination, determining which genes within the supergene mediate this differential worker behavior is difficult. We hypothesized that the alternate worker genotypes sense queens differently because of the evolution of differential expression of key genes in their main sensory organ, the antennae. To identify such genes, we sequenced RNA from four replicates of pooled antennae from three classes of workers: monogyne SB/SB , polygyne SB/SB , and polygyne SB/Sb . We identified 81 differentially expressed protein-coding genes with 13 encoding potential chemical metabolism or perception proteins. We focused on the two odorant perception genes: an odorant receptor SiOR463 and an odorant-binding protein SiOBP12 . We found that SiOR463 has been lost in the Sb genome. In contrast, SiOBP12 has an Sb -specific duplication, SiOBP12b ', which is expressed in the SB/Sb worker antennae, while both paralogs are expressed in the body. Comparisons with another fire ant species revealed that SiOBP12b ' antennal expression is specific to S. invicta and suggests that queen discrimination may have evolved, in part, through expression neofunctionalization., Competing Interests: None declared., (© 2019 The Authors. Calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 )-enriched biomaterial derived from freshwater mussel shells (FMS) was used as a non-porous biosorbent to explore the characteristics and mechanisms of cadmium adsorption in aqueous solution. The adsorption mechanism was proposed by comparing the FMS properties before and after adsorption alongside various adsorption studies. The FMS biosorbent was characterized using nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherm, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and point of zero charge. The results of batch experiments indicated that FMS possessed an excellent affinity to Cd(II) ions within solutions pH higher than 4.0. An increase in ionic strength resulted in a significant decrease in the amount of Cd(II) adsorbed onto FMS. Kinetic study demonstrated that the adsorption process quickly reached equilibrium at approximately 60 min. The FMS biosorbent exhibited the Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity as follows: 18.2 mg/g at 10 °C < 26.0 mg/g at 30 °C < 28.6 mg/g at 50 °C. The Cd(II) adsorption process was irreversible, spontaneous (-ΔG°), endothermic (+ΔH°), and more random (+ΔS°). Selective order (mmol/g) of metal cations followed as Pb 2+  > Cd 2+  > Cu 2+  > Cr 3+  > Zn 2+ . For column experiments, the highest Thomas adsorption capacity (7.86 mg/g) was achieved at a flow rate (9 mL/min), initial Cd(II) concentration (10 mg/L), and bed height (5 cm). The Cd(II) removal by FMS was regarded as non-activated chemisorption that occurred very rapidly (even at a low temperature) with a low magnitude of activation energy. Primary adsorption mechanism was surface precipitation. Cadmium precipitated in the primary (Cd,Ca)CO 3 form with a calcite-type structure on the FMS surface. A crust of rhombohedral crystals on the substrate was observed by SEM. The Bloch-Torrey partial differential equation can be used to describe the evolution of the transverse magnetization of the imaged sample under the influence of diffusion-encoding magnetic field gradients inside the MRI scanner. The integral of the magnetization inside a voxel gives the simulated diffusion MRI signal. This paper proposes a finite element discretization on manifolds in order to efficiently simulate the diffusion MRI signal in domains that have a thin layer or a thin tube geometrical structure. The variable thickness of the three-dimensional domains is included in the weak formulation established on the manifolds. We conducted a numerical study of the proposed approach by simulating the diffusion MRI signals from the extracellular space (a thin layer medium) and from neurons (a thin tube medium), comparing the results with the reference signals obtained using a standard three-dimensional finite element discretization. We show good agreements between the simulated signals using our proposed method and the reference signals for a wide range of diffusion MRI parameters. The approximation becomes better as the diffusion time increases. The method helps to significantly reduce the required simulation time, computational memory, and difficulties associated with mesh generation, thus opening the possibilities to simulating complicated structures at low cost for a better understanding of diffusion MRI in the brain., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc.
