The Hugoniot equation of state (EOS) and Hugoniot elastic limit over the stress range of 1.5-8.0 GPa is investigated. Shock experiments in which materials of interest are impacted by an identical material or by a different previously well-characterized material are discussed.

Abstract

The shock behavior of two varieties of the ceramic silicon carbide was investigated through a series of time-resolved plate impact experiments reaching stresses of over 140 GPa. Through the use of reshock and release configurations, reloading and unloading responses for the materials were found and analysis of these responses provides a measure of the ceramic's strength behavior as quantified by the shear stress and the strength in the Hugoniot state.

Abstract

The shock response of a silicon carbide is investigated using the methods of plate impact, and monitored using manganin stress gauges mounted to be responsive to lateral stress. A two-step stress response is observed, indicating the presence of delayed failure at the impact face.

Abstract

The deviatoric response of the dense ceramic, tungsten carbide is investigated under shock loading conditions, using laterally mounted stress gauges. The results indicate that lateral stress increases, and thus shear strength decreases behind the shock front.

Abstract

We have studied hypervelocity impacts at 5 km s(-1) of 1 mm diameter projectiles on two types of ice: H2O and CO2. We compare crater morphology for the resulting impact craters and find that the craters are smaller in the CO2 ice than in H2O ice. However the crater shape, as expressed by the ratio depth/diameter, is indistinguishable between the two types of ice. Further, we have investigated the dependence of crater size and shape on projectile density. We find that for densities of 2750 to 7850 kg m(-3), the ratio depth/diameter does not have the strong dependence on density suggested elsewhere in the literature. This is true for both types of ice. We thus suggest that whilst the crater size may depend strongly on ice type, the shape does not and is also almost independent of projectile density.
