Theoretically grounded in the Social-Mediated Crisis Communication model (SMCC), the current study examined the public’s reactions to Elon Musk’s controversial tweets, focusing on his position as an organizational spokesman at Tesla and as a social media influencer (SMI) from a crisis communication perspective. This study examined the public’s reaction to Musk’s six most controversial tweets related to Tesla from 2019 to 2021 by analyzing user replies through computational analyses, including Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LWIC) and Leximancer. This study argues that Musk’s controversial tweets could cause paracrises; yet it also acknowledges the public's polarized expectations of an influential CEO. Findings show that a portion of the public expects Musk to behave like an ethical CEO, while others consider him an influencer and appreciate the provocative information he tweets. Thus, this study reveals how companies can use social media to improve their PR strategies and come up with an effective approach before a crisis happens.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the performance of the BD Phoenix™ M50 system with two antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) panels against clinical isolates in South Korea and the accuracy of determining carbapenem and colistin susceptibility compared with reference methods. A total of 825 nonduplicated clinical isolates were included in this study. Bacterial identification was performed using Bruker Biotyper and 16S rDNA sequencing. Antimicrobial susceptibilities were tested by disk diffusion, broth microdilution, and agar dilution methods. AST with the Phoenix system was performed following the manufacturer's instructions. The categorical agreement (CA), very major error (VME), major error (ME), and minor error (mE) rates were calculated for each antibiotic. CA rates between the results of the Phoenix system and reference methods were more than 90% for most antibiotics except for ciprofloxacin in enterococci (82.7%, 163/197) and cefepime in Acinetobacter species (88.9%, 88/99). VME and ME rates were less than 3% for all the antibiotics tested in this study. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values for carbapenem and colistin determined by the Phoenix system were highly correlated with those of dilution methods, exhibiting 99.2% (384/387), 96.7% (374/387), and 98.5% (129/131) of the agreement rate within onefold dilution difference for imipenem, meropenem, and colistin, respectively. The BD Phoenix M50™ system showed reliable performance for AST in clinical microbiology laboratories and for detecting carbapenem and colistin resistance in Gram-negative clinical isolates.

Background: Antimicrobial resistant continues to pose a threat to public health. Therefore, rapid and accurate antimicrobial susceptibility testing is very important. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the performance of the MicroScan system (Beckman Coulter, USA) with newly developed Korean Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing Panels (KSCM panels) for antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) against clinical isolates in South Korea.Methods: Three KSCM panels were designed in this study. For the performance evaluation, a total of 1,325 clinical isolates including 1,027 of Gram-negative bacilli and 298 Gram-positive cocci collected from eight general hospitals in South Korea were used. The results by KSCM panels were compared with those by conventional methods.Results: By KSCM-1 panel for Gram-positive cocci, the rates of categorical agreement (CA) were ＞90% in all the antimicrobials tested in this study. This study was conducted to investigate the physicochemical properties and antioxidant activity of the solvent fractions obtained from 80% ethanol extracts of Wasabia koreana Nakai leaves. From the ethanol extracts, hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol fractions were sequentially extracted and collected, and further used for the investigation. The highest yield was obtained in the water fraction and its pH was 4.25. The total polyphenol, total flavonoid and total pectin contents in the ethyl acetate fraction were 56.24 mgGAE/g, 97.29 mgNE/g and 108.8 mg/g, respectively. This indicated that the extraction yields of the phenolic compounds and pectin in the solvent fractions obtained from the Wasabi leaves and petiole were significantly different. Analysis of the taste components of the ethyl acetate and water fractions was carried out using an electronic tongue sensor. A negative concentration-dependent population for the ethyl acetate fraction and a positive population for the water fraction, corresponding to DF1 (83.96%) in the discriminant function analysis (DFA) plot, were confirmed from the analysis. In the ethyl acetate fraction, the IC50 values ​​of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) radical scavenging activity and 2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid(ABTS) radical scavenging activity were 899.88 ppm and 276.63 ppm, respectively. Therefore, the ethanol extracts and fractions from Wasabia koreana Nakai leaf have low utilization, which will be beneficial for the development of high value-added products via improvement in the taste components and antioxidant activity.

Carbon electrodes that are thick and maintain a high volumetric energy density are essential for high energy storage microsupercapacitors (MSCs). Here, fabrication of an electrode based on a boron-doped 3D porous carbon pattern (B-3D-PCP) by lithographic processes is demonstrated. The B-3D-PCP is obtained by carbonization and doping of a polymer pattern fabricated by interference lithography. Then, plasma etching is performed on the B-3D-PCP to obtain an interdigitated electrode, and a polymer electrolyte is applied to complete the MSC. The B-3D-PCP shows remarkably high pseudocapacitance after B-doping. This electrode also exhibits no capacitance loss when the electrode width increases, even at very high scan rates, owing to the uniform pores of the 3D-PCP. The solid-state B-3D-PCP MSC with a polymer gel electrolyte shows a capacitance of 7.1 mF/cm 2 , with a remarkable capacitance retention of 81%, especially upon a scan rate increase of 10 times at 100 mV. With B-3D-PCP MSCs, a volumetric energy density of 7.1 mWh/cm 3 and a volumetric power density of 66 W/cm 3 could be achieved. Finally, the performance of the MSC is demonstrated by using it to power various electronic devices. The results suggest a new electrode for the MSC that overcomes the performance limitations of conventional electrodes.

Background Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction and a major healthcare burden worldwide. Although sepsis is a medical emergency that requires immediate management, screening for the occurrence of sepsis is difficult. Herein, we propose a deep learning-based model (DLM) for screening sepsis using electrocardiography (ECG). Methods This retrospective cohort study included 46,017 patients who were admitted to two hospitals. A total of 1,548 and 639 patients had sepsis and septic shock, respectively. The DLM was developed using 73,727 ECGs from 18,142 patients, and internal validation was conducted using 7774 ECGs from 7,774 patients. Furthermore, we conducted an external validation with 20,101 ECGs from 20,101 patients from another hospital to verify the applicability of the DLM across centers. Results During the internal and external validations, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of the DLM using 12-lead ECG was 0.901 (95% confidence interval, 0.882–0.920) and 0.863 (0.846–0.879), respectively, for screening sepsis and 0.906 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.877–0.936) and 0.899 (95% CI, 0.872–0.925), respectively, for detecting septic shock. The AUC of the DLM for detecting sepsis using 6-lead and single-lead ECGs was 0.845–0.882. A sensitivity map revealed that the QRS complex and T waves were associated with sepsis. Subgroup analysis was conducted using ECGs from 4,609 patients who were admitted with an infectious disease, and the AUC of the DLM for predicting in-hospital mortality was 0.817 (0.793–0.840). There was a significant difference in the prediction score of DLM using ECG according to the presence of infection in the validation dataset (0.277 vs. 0.574, p p = 0.018). Conclusions The DLM delivered reasonable performance for sepsis screening using 12-, 6-, and single-lead ECGs. The results suggest that sepsis can be screened using not only conventional ECG devices but also diverse life-type ECG machines employing the DLM, thereby preventing irreversible disease progression and mortality.

Plasticizers are added to diverse consumer products including children’s products. Owing to their potential for endocrine disruption, the use of phthalate plasticizers is restricted in many children’s products. In this study, exposure to five phthalate esters (dibutylphthalate, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), diethyl phthalate, di-isobutyl phthalate, and diisononyl phthalate (DINP)) and an alternative (di-ethylhexyl adipate) was assessed by the use of children’s products based on chemical analysis of 3345 products purchased during 2017 and 2019 in Korea. Plasticizers were found above the detection limits in 387 products, and DEHP and DINP were the two most predominantly detected plasticizers. Deterministic and probabilistic estimation of the margin of exposure at a screening level revealed that the use of children’s products might be an important risk factor. However, it is also highly likely that the exposure could be overestimated, because the migration rate was estimated based solely on the content of plasticizers in children’s products. Chemical migration is a key process determining the absorption of plasticizers from products, thus, further refinements in experimental determination or model estimation of the migration rate are required.

Human exposure to microplastics contained in food has become a significant concern owing to the increasing accumulation of microplastics in the environment. In this paper, we summarize the presence of microplastics in food and the analytical methods used for isolation and identification of microplastics. Although a large number of studies on seafood such as fish and shellfish exist, estimating the overall human exposure to microplastics via food consumption is difficult owing to the lack of studies on other food items. Analytical methods still need to be optimized for appropriate recovery of microplastics in various food matrices, rendering a quantitative comparison of different studies challenging. In addition, microplastics could be added or removed from ingredients during processing or cooking. Thus, research on processed food is crucial to estimate the contribution of food to overall human microplastic consumption and to mitigate this exposure in the future.

Purpose Few studies have evaluated the relapse pattern of intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO) for the correction of mandibular prognathism with a high angle. The aim of this study was to measure the association between vertical facial types (high and normal mandibular plane angle) and relapse after IVRO for the management of mandibular prognathism. Materials and Methods The retrospective cohort study sample (skeletal Class III patients) was divided into 2 groups according to the angle of the sella-nasion plane relative to the mandibular plane (SN-MP) at the initial examination. Lateral cephalograms were analyzed for the predictor (facial type) and outcome (cephalometric changes over time) variables before surgery, 7 days after surgery, and 12 months after surgery. The 2 groups were matched for sample size (n = 20 in each). Data were analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance with Bonferroni correction. Results The normal-angle group (group N, SN-MP from 27° to 37°) and high-angle group (group H, SN-MP >37°) were not significantly different in terms of gender and age at the initial examination. Seven days after surgery, the mandibles in group H moved 2.5 mm more superiorly than those in group N (P = .013); consequently, the amount of overbite correction in group H was approximately 2 mm greater than that in group N (P = .002). Nevertheless, 12 months after surgery, there was no statistically significant difference in relapse of the maxilla and mandible between the 2 groups. In the 2 groups, the mandible moved approximately 0.7 mm superiorly during retention. Conclusions These findings suggest that IVRO is a clinically acceptable and stable treatment modality for mandibular prognathism with a high angle.

The pentamode structure is a type of mechanical metamaterial that displays dramatically different bulk and shear modulus responses. In this study, a face-centered cubic (FCC) polymeric microstructure was fabricated by using SU8 negative-type photoresists and multibeam interference exposure. Isotropic plasma etching is used to control the solid-volume fraction; for the first time, we obtained a structure with the minimum solid-volume fraction as low as 15% that still exhibited high structural integrity. Using this method, we reduced the width of atom-to-atom connections by up to 40 nm. We characterize the effect of the connection area on the anisotropy of the mechanical properties using simulations. Nanoindentation measurements were also conducted to evaluate the energy dissipation by varying the connection area. The Young's/shear modulus ratio is 5 times higher for the etched microstructure than that of the bulk SU8 materials. The use of interference lithography may enable the properties of microscale materials to be engineered for various applications, such as MEMS.

This study was carried out to investigate the epidemiological time-course of New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase- (NDM-) mediated carbapenem resistance in Enterobacteriaceae in South Korea. A total of 146 non-duplicate NDM-producing Enterobacteriaceae recovered between 2010 and 2015 were voluntarily collected from 33 general hospitals and confirmed by PCR. The species were identified by sequences of the 16S rDNA. Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined either by the disk diffusion method or by broth microdilution, and the carbapenem MICs were determined by agar dilution. Then, multilocus sequence typing and PCR-based replicon typing was carried out. Co-carried genes for drug resistance were identified by PCR and sequencing. The entire genomes of eight random selected NDM producers were sequenced. A total of 69 Klebsiella pneumoniae of 12 sequence types (STs), 34 Escherichia coli of 15 STs, 28 Enterobacter spp. (including one Enterobacter aerogenes), nine Citrobacter freundii, four Raoultella spp., and two Klebsiella oxytoca isolates produced either NDM-1 (n = 126), NDM-5 (n = 18), or NDM-7 (n = 2). The isolates co-produced CTX-M-type ESBL (52.1%), AmpCs (27.4%), additional carbapenemases (7.1%), and/or 16S rRNA methyltransferases (4.8%), resulting in multidrug-resistance (47.9%) or extensively drug-resistance (52.1%). Among plasmids harboring blaNDM, IncX3 was predominant (77.4%), followed by the IncFII type (5.8%). Genome analysis revealed inter-species and inter-strain horizontal gene transfer of the plasmid. Both clonal dissemination and plasmid transfer contributed to the wide dissemination of NDM producers in South Korea.

Engineered silicon and carbon composite materials have been demonstrated to be promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. In this paper, we demonstrate a facile approach to fabricating silicon/carbon composite electrodes via simple mixing of silicon nanoparticles (SNPs) and carbon nanospheres (CNSs). Size-monodisperse CNSs were obtained by the direct carbon conversion of polystyrene spheres. The mixture of SNPs with size-monodisperse CNSs allowed for a uniform dispersion with minimal SNP aggregation, which was evaluated through direct comparison of the SNP mixture with micrometer-sized carbon particles. This SNP/CNS composite electrode, containing 30 wt% SNPs, exhibited a reversible specific capacity of 1023 mA h g−1 at 100 mA g−1, which was more than three times higher than that of a bare CNS electrode. The capacity retention after 50 cycles was 73%, with a high Coulombic efficiency of 99%; in addition, the capacity retention was approximately 70% when the current density was increased tenfold. Specifically, the SNP/CNS electrode exhibited substantially less capacity fade than did SNPs dispersed in micrometer-sized carbon particles. Moreover, the SNP/CNS electrode exhibited improved capacity retention under high-current-density conditions compared to that of previously developed silicon/carbon composite anodes. We attributed this improved LIB performance to the uniform dispersion of SNPs in the CNS matrix, which resulted in stable SEI formation and effective accommodation of the volume change of silicon. We believe our CNS structures can be extended to other electrode-material systems that require a large volume change and good mass transport characteristics.

The confinement and uniform dispersion of Si nanoparticles (NPs) in a carbon matrix is a promising strategy to accommodate the problematic large volume change of high-capacity Si-based anodes during charging/discharging in lithium-ion batteries. Here, we introduced an inverse opal carbon (IOC) matrix for Si NPs dispersion. A macroporous, highly interconnected porous structure of IOCs allowed uniform dispersion of Si NPs by simple mixing, and large voids that surrounded the Si NPs. The Si NPs/IOC composite anode exhibited a specific capacity up to 1233 mA g−1 with 40 wt% Si NPs content, which was 4.1 times higher than the IOC anode. The capacity retention over 50 cycles for the Si NPs/IOC anode (40 wt% Si NPs/IOC) was as high as 81%, whereas the Si NPs anode revealed only 48% retention. The specific capacity was also maintained up to 70% as the current density increased 20-fold. These enhancement of the capacity retention and the current density were attributed to the efficient accommodation of the Si volume change in the IOC structure and facile charge transport in and through the IOC matrix. We believe this simple geometry-derived approach for the dispersion of nanoparticles may be advantageous in the practical application of high-capacitive nanomaterials for next-generation lithium ion battery (LIB) development.

2H-[1,2,3]Triazolo[4,5-g]isoquinoline-4,9-diones and 2H-[1,2,3]triazolo[4,5-g]quinoline-4,9-diones were synthesized and tested for in vitro antifungal activity against pathogenic fungi. Many of those synthesized showed potent antifungal activity. Compounds 3a, 3b, 3g, and 3h completely inhibited the growth of all fungal species tested at the MIC level of 0.8-12.5 µg/mL. The results suggest that 2H-[1,2,3]triazolo[4,5-g]isoquinoline-4,9-diones could be antifungal agents.

Background: Fecal occult blood tests have been widely used to screen for colorectal cancer. SENTiFIT 270 (Sentinel diagnostics, Italy) is a fecal occult blood test with an immunochemical method that utilizes FOB Gold reagents. We evaluated the performance of SENTiFIT 270 using the FOB Gold reagent. In addition, FOB Gold was evaluated with the HITACHI 7180 (Hitachi Ltd., Japan).Methods: The precision and linearity of the SENTiFIT 270 was evaluated in accordance with applicable Clinical and Laboratory Standard Institute guidelines. The comparison study between SENTiFIT 270-FOB Gold and the OC-Sensor (Eiken chemical Co., Japan) was performed using stool specimens.Results: In the precision evaluation, the total precision of SENTiFIT 270-FOB Gold was 4.94% and 2.54% at high and low concentrations, respectively. The HITACHI 7180-FOB Gold had excellent precision of 4.60% and 2.09% at high and low concentrations, respectively. Linearity was also excellent for the SENTiFIT 270-FOB Gold and HITACHI 7180-FOB Gold at 0.9987 and 0.9986, respectively. The SENTITIF 270-FOB Gold showed excellent agreement with a kappa value of 0.830 and a concordance rate of 93.6%. The HITACHI 7180-FOB Gold showed high agreement with a kappa value of 0.832 and a concordance rate of 93.9%.Conclusion: The SENTiFIT 270-FOB Gold showed excellent performance in accuracy, linearity, and comparative inspection ability. We aim to unveil dietary history recorded in Neolithic human bone from Janghang site at Gadeok Island, Busan. Excavation of Janghang site at Gadeok Island from 2010 to 2011 is an outstanding discovery in Korean Neolithic archaeology. A large number of human bones (48 individuals) were found at Janghang site, which is the largest-scale Neolithic cemetery in Korea. We extracted human bone collagen from 10 individuals and stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis were carried out using carbon and nitrogen analyzer connected to a continuous-flow isotope-ratio-monitoring mass-spectrometer. Although bone histological analysis shows poor preservation state, stable isotope results correspond well with bone collagen quality indicator, which implies that bone collagen reflects lifetime signature. Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope result indicates highly marine- based diet (δ 13 C = -14.5±1.3‰, δ 15 N = 17.4±1.7‰), however the possible input of terrestrial animal and wild plant cannot be excluded. Our isotopic findings provide an invaluable information on Neolithic subsistence economy in this coastal area. In addition, Janghang site shows specific features in burial methods and burial goods. Two different burial methods of arranging bodies are found with extended burial type and particularly high ratio of flexed burial type. There are also burial goods such as pottery. However, there are no significant isotopic differences according to burial methods and burial goods. Inverse opal carbon materials were used as anodes for lithium ion batteries. We applied particulate inverse opal structures and their dispersion in the formation of anode electrodes via solution casting. We prepared aminophenyl-grafted inverse opal carbons (a-IOC), inverse opal carbons with mesopores (mIOC), and bare inverse opal carbons (IOC) and investigated the electrochemical behavior of these samples as anode materials. Surface modification by aminophenyl groups was confirmed by XPS measurements. TEM images showed mesopores, and the specific area of mIOC was compared with that of IOC using BET analysis. A half-cell test was performed to compare a-IOC with IOC and mIOC with IOC. In the case of the a-IOC structure, the cell test revealed no improvement in the reversible specific capacity or the cycle performance. The mIOC cell showed a reversible specific capacity of 432 mAh/g, and the capacity was maintained at 88%-approximately 380 mAh/g-over 20 cycles.

Nongrowing adult patients with skeletal open bite have been considered among the most difficult to treat. This case report describes the surgical-orthodontic treatment of a blind 20-year-old woman who presented with skeletal class II malocclusion with vertical maxillary excess, anterior open bite, and transverse maxillary deficiency.After the transverse maxillary deficiency was corrected with miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion, Le Fort I osteotomy with anterior segmental osteotomy and bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy with advancement genioplasty were used to correct the vertical maxillary excess and the anterior open bite. The patient's facial appearance was markedly improved, and she achieved a functional and stable occlusion after these treatments.This case report demonstrates the efficiency of miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion for a patient with transverse maxillary deficiency and the benefit of a team approach using effective orthodontic mechanics in orthognathic surgery to correct a severe dentofacial deformity.

Mechanical metamaterials that are engineered with sub-unit structures present unusual mechanical properties depending on the loading direction. Although they show promise, their practical utility has so far been somewhat limited because, to the best of our knowledge, no study about the potential of mechanical metamaterials made from sophisticatedly tailored sub-unit structures has been made. Here, we present a mechanical metamaterial whose mechanical properties can be systematically designed without changing its chemical composition or weight. We study the mechanical properties of triply periodic bicontinuous structures whose detailed sub-unit structure can be precisely fabricated using various sub-micron fabrication methods. Simulation results show that the effective wave velocity of the structures along with different directions can be designed to introduce the anisotropy of stiffness by changing a volume fraction and aspect ratio. The ratio of Young’s modulus to shear modulus can be increased by up to at least 100, which is a 3500% increase over that of isotropic material (2.8, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene). Furthermore, Poisson’s ratio of the constituent material changes the ratio while Young’s modulus does not influence it. This study presents the promising potential of mechanical metamaterials for versatile industrial and biomedical applications.

This study reports the stable carbon and nitrogen isotope of mummy, the preserved human time capsule from Joseon Dynasty. The stable isotopic composition of biological tissue is expected to be a direct and constant function of diet because the stable isotope ratios do not decay or change in abundance through time. Over the past three decades, stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis has been extensively applied for archaeological topics. However, this is the first case in Korean mummy to extract palaeodietary information using stable isotope analysis. We extracted isotopic information from bone collagen and hair keratin, which reflects the lifetime average diet and short-term diet, respectively. The average values of and values are -19.0‰ and 11.4‰ (bone collagen), and -21.3‰ and 14.3‰ (hair keratin). Stable carbon isotope shows a mainly -based diet from cradle to grave. On the other hand, there is significant difference in stable nitrogen isotope which implies a relatively enriched diet before death. We expect this study opens up a potential to understand the palaeodietary lifestyle in Joseon Dynasty.

The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to investigate the factors contributing to mandibular relapse after intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO) while controlling for possible confounders. Forty-seven patients who underwent bimaxillary surgery were divided into three groups according to the direction of horizontal mandibular relapse: a stable group (group S), a posterior relapse group (group P), and an anterior relapse group (group A). Lateral cephalograms were analysed 1 month before and at 7 days and 12 months after surgery. WP has become an importantsource of functional ingredients in various health-promoting foods. In this study, size-exclusion chromatography(SEC) and asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (AsFlFFF) were used for separation and analysis ofwhey proteins. It was found that a lab-prepared WP from raw milk is mostly of β-lactoglobulin with smallamount of higher molecular weight components, while a commercial whey protein isolate (WPI) powdercontains relatively larger amount of components other than β-lactoglobulin, including IgG and proteinaggregates. Results suggest that AsFlFFF provides higher resolution for the major whey proteins than SEC intheir normal operation conditions. AsFlFFF could differentiate the BSA and Albumin, despite a smalldifference in their molecular weights, and also was able to separate much smaller amount of aggregates frommonomers. It is noted that SEC was able to show the presence of low molecular weight components other thanthe major whey proteins in the WP samples, which AsFlFFF could not show, probably due to the partial lossof those low molecular weight species through the membrane. Gravitational field-flow fractionation (GrFFF) is a useful technique for fast separation of micrometer-sized particles. Different sized particles are carried at different velocities by a flow of fluid along an unobstructed thin channel, resulting in a size-based separation. They are confined to thin focused layers in the channel thickness where force due to gravity is exactly opposed by hydrodynamic lift forces (HLF). It has been reported that the HLF are a function of various parameters including the flow rate (or shear rate), the size of the particles, and the density and viscosity of the liquid. The dependence of HLF on these parameters offers a means of altering the equilibrium transverse positions of the particles in GrFFF, and hence their elution times. In this study, the effect of the viscosity of the carrier fluid on the elution behavior (retention, zone broadening, and resolution) of micrometer-sized particles in GrFFF was investigated using polystyrene (PS) latex beads as model particles. In order to change the carrier liquid viscosity without affecting its density, various amounts of (hydroxypropyl) methyl cellulose (HPMC) were added to the aqueous carrier liquid. It was found that particles migrate at faster rates as the carrier viscosity is increased, which confirms the dependence of HLF on viscosity. At the same time, particle size selectivity decreased but peak shape and symmetry for the more strongly retained particles improved. As a result, separation was improved in terms of both the separation time and resolution with increase of carrier viscosity. A theoretical model for plate height in GrFFF is also presented, and its predictions are compared to experimentally measured values.

Public institutions and owners have been introduced to Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools. BIM has become an important factor in the design process in undergrad programs. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the improvement of the architectural engineering design process through an analysis of BIM courses. BIM education courses are analyzed to compare the level of detail in BIM education. An architectural engineering design class needs to involve BIM in the introduction of an integrated design process. An architectural engineering design process needs to be based on understanding design, building structures, construction and building services. 3D Modeling helps support an understanding of building structure and eco-friendly element analysis. The new process of architectural engineering design education is proposed as a result of this research.

A gravitational field-flow fractionation (GrFFF) was employed to study the influence of various reaction parameters in emulsion polymerization on size distribution of polymeric latex beads. Micron-sized polystyrene (PS) latex beads were synthesized by conventional emulsion polymerization. The reaction parameters such as the stirring rate (rpm), reaction time, concentration of azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), were systematically varied. Then the PS beads were analyzed by GrFFF for size determination. It was found that the mean diameter and the size distribution of the PS latex beads change as some of the reaction parameters change. No clear trends were observed in the mean diameter and the coefficient of variation (CV) with the stirring rate in the range of 60 to 300 rpm, or with the reaction time in the range of 13 to 24 hrs. Gravitational field-flow fractionation (GrFFF) has been shown to be useful for separation and characterization of various types of micrometer-sized particles. It has been recognized however that GrFFF is less versatile than other members of FFF because the external field (Earth's gravity) in GrFFF is relatively weak and is not tunable (constant), which makes the force acting on the particles constant. A few approaches have been suggested to control the force acting on particles in GrFFF. They include (1) changing the angle between the Earth's gravitational field and the longitudinal axis of the channel, and (2) the use of carrier liquid having different densities. In the hyperlayer mode of GrFFF, the hydrodynamic lift force (HLF) also act on particles. The existence of HLF allows other means of changing the force acting on the particles in GrFFF. They include (1) the flow rate programming, or (2) the use of channels having non-constant cross-section. In this study, with polystyrene latex beads used as model particles, the channel angle was varied to study its effect on elution parameters (such as selectivity, band broadening and resolution) in the steric or in the hyperlayer mode of GrFFF. In addition, the effects of the channel thickness and the flow rate on the elution parameters were also investigated. It was found that, in the steric mode, the resolution decreases as the flow rate increases due to increased zone broadening despite of the increase in the selectivity. At a constant volumetric flow rate, both the zone broadening and the selectivity increase as the channel thickness increases, resulting in the net increase in the resolution. It was also found that the retention time decreases as the channel angle increases in both up- and down-flow positions. The zone broadening tends to increase almost linearly with the channel angle, while no particular trends were found in selectivity. As a result, the resolution decreases as the channel angle increases.

This case report describes the beneficial effects of the interdisciplinary treatment of an adult patient with severe skeletal periodontal problems. A 30-year-old female patient presented with anterior open bite, gummy smile, and facial asymmetry. The patient had chronic generalized severe periodontitis with pathologic maxillary anterior teeth migration and mild intellectual disability. Treatment included 6 months of periodontal treatment, followed by presurgical orthodontic treatment, a Le Fort I osteotomy with anterior segmental osteotomy, a bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy, and postsurgical orthodontic treatment. After treatment completion, the patient exhibited functional and aesthetic improvements. Her periodontal condition improved and was maintained after the treatment. Here, we demonstrate a successful treatment outcome in a complicated case following a systematic interdisciplinary approach performed with the correct diagnosis and treatment planning.

The direct pyrolytic carbonisation of polymer patterns has attracted interest for its use in obtaining carbon materials. In the case of carbonisation of nanopatterned polymers, the polymer flow and subsequent pattern change may occur in order to relieve their high surface energies. Here, we demonstrated that liquid immersion thermal crosslinking of polymer nanopatterns effectively enhanced the thermal resistance and maintained the structure integrity during the heat treatment. We employed the liquid immersion thermal crosslinking for 3D porous SU8 photoresist nanopatterns and successfully converted them to carbon nanopatterns while maintaining their porous features. The thermal crosslinking reaction and carbonisation of SU8 nanopatterns were characterised. The micro-crystallinity of the SU8-derived carbon nanopatterns was also characterised. The liquid immersion heat treatment can be extended to the carbonisation of various polymer or photoresist nanopatterns and also provide a facile way to control the surface energy of polymer nanopatterns for various purposes, for example, to block copolymer or surfactant self-assemblies.

2H-[1,2,3]Triazolo[4,5-g]isoquinoline-4,9-diones and 2H-[1,2,3]triazolo[4,5-g]quinoline-4,9-diones were synthesized and tested for in vitro antifungal activity against pathogenic fungi. Many of those synthesized showed potent antifungal activity. Compounds 3a, 3b, 3g, and 3h completely inhibited the growth of all fungal species tested at the MIC level of 0.8-12.5 µg/mL. The results suggest that 2H-[1,2,3]triazolo[4,5-g]isoquinoline-4,9-diones could be antifungal agents.

Supercapacitors that exhibit long cycle lives and fast charge/discharge rates are a promising energy-storage technology for next-generation mobile or wearable electronic systems. A great challenge facing the fabrication of ultrathin supercapacitor components, specifically their porous electrodes, is whether such components can be integrated with the fabrication of electronic devices, i.e., semiconductor fabrication processes. Here, we introduce the lithographic fabrication of micrometre-thick, submicrometre-pore-patterned carbon for supercapacitor electrodes. The pore patterns designed by multi-beam interference lithography and direct carbonisation of the photoresist pattern produced pore-patterned carbon films. A facile doping process was subsequently employed to introduce nitrogen atoms into the carbon, which was intended to further enhance the carbon's capacitive properties. Specifically, during these fabrication steps, we developed an approach that uses a supporting shell on the surface of the pore patterns to maintain their structural integrity. The nitrogen-doped, pore-patterned carbon electrodes exhibited an areal specific capacitance of 32.7 mF/cm(2) at 0.5 mA/cm(2) when used as supercapacitor electrodes, which is approximately 20 times greater than that of commercially available MWCNT films measured under the same conditions.

We have provided a design of the macroscopic morphology of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using emulsion droplet confinement. The evaporation of CNT-dispersed aqueous emulsion droplets in oil produces spherical CNT assemblies, i.e., CNT balls. In this emulsion-assisted method, compact packing of CNT was obtained by the presence of capillary pressure during droplet evaporation. The size of the CNT balls could be controlled by changing the concentration of the CNT dispersion solution; typically, CNT balls with an average size in the range of 8-12 μm were obtained with a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific area of 200 m(2)/g. Heat treatment of the CNT balls, which was required to remove residual solvent, and cement CNTs was followed, and their effect has been characterized; the heat treatment at high temperature desorbed surface oxygenated groups of CNTs and created defective carbon structures, but did not change pore structure. The dispersion of CNT balls was applied to form CNT ball-assembled film for a supercapacitor electrode. The specific capacitance of 80 F/g was obtained at 500 °C heat treatment, but the CNT balls prepared at a higher temperature actually decreased the capacitance, because of the removal of surface oxygenated groups, thereby decreasing the pseudo-capacitance. The capacitive properties of CNT ball-assembled electrodes were compared to CNT films; the CNT ball electrodes showed 40% higher specific electrochemical capacitance and higher rate performance, which is attributed to the compact packing of CNTs in the CNT ball and the hierarchical porous structures in the ball assemblies.

A sensitive and rapid method for quantitation of bepotastine in human plasma has been established using ultra performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-ESI-MS/MS). Valsartan was used as an internal standard. Bepotastine and internal standard in plasma sample were extracted using ethylacetate (liquid-liquid extraction). A centrifuged upper layer was then evaporated and reconstituted with the mobile phase of acetonitrile--5 mM ammonium formate (pH 3.5) (85:15, v/v). The reconstituted samples were injected into a phenyl column. Using MS/MS in the multiple reaction monitoring mode, bepotastine and valsartan were detected without severe interference from human plasma matrix. Bepotastine produced a protonated precursor ion ([M+H](+)) at m/z 389 and a corresponding product ion at m/z 167. And the internal standard produced a protonated precursor ion ([M+H](+)) at m/z 436 and a corresponding product ion at m/z 291. Detection of bepotastine in human plasma by the UPLC-ESI-MS/MS method was accurate and precise with a quantitation limit of 0.2 ng/mL. The validation, reproducibility, stability and recovery of the method were evaluated. The method has been successfully applied to pharmacokinetic studies of bepotastine in human plasma.

To reduce a large amount of mandibular setback and to prevent pharyngeal airway space narrowing when correcting a severe anteroposterior skeletal discrepancy, a mandibular step osteotomy is often combined with 2-stage orthognathic surgery. This case report describes a successful 2-stage orthognathic treatment combined with a mandibular step osteotomy. A 20-year-old man had severe mandibular protrusion, facial asymmetry, and macroglossia. Phase 1 surgery included the mandibular step osteotomy and a partial glossectomy; then we performed phase 2 surgery with a 2-piece LeFort I segmental osteotomy and a bilateral intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy to correct the patient's mandibular protrusion and facial asymmetry. The total treatment period was 30 months, and the final result was improvement of the patient's facial appearance.

Distraction osteogenesis is an alternative treatment option for patients with facial asymmetry and mandibular hypoplasia. New bone is formed between bone segment surfaces that are gradually separated by incremental traction. The purpose of this article is to report the treatment of a 22-year-old man with hemifacial microsomia, facial asymmetry, and a skeletal Class II profile. The patient's left mandibular ramus was lengthened with distraction osteogenesis, and miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion was used to correct the maxillary transverse deficiency. Postoperative orthodontic treatment achieved tooth alignment and closure of the posterior open bite. The total treatment period was 27 months. These therapeutic treatments improved the patient's facial appearance.

Objective: To investigate the three-dimensional structural features of three types of mechanically retentive ceramic bracket bases. Materials and Methods: One type of stainless steel (MicroArch, Tomy, Tokyo, Japan) and three types of ceramic maxillary right central incisor brackets—Crystaline MB (Tomy), INVU (TP Orthodontics, La Porte, Ind), and Inspire Ice (Ormco, Glendora, Calif)—were tested to compare and quantitatively analyze differences in the surface features of each ceramic bracket base using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), a three-dimensional (3D) optical surface profiler, and microcomputed tomography (micro-CT). One-way analysis of variance was used to find differences in bracket base surface roughness values and surface areas between groups according to base designs. Tukey's honestly significant differences tests were used for post hoc comparisons. Results: SEM revealed that each bracket exhibited a unique surface texture (MicroArch, double mesh; Crystaline MB, irregular; INVU, single mesh; Inspire Ice, bead ball). With a 3D optical surface profiler, the stainless steel bracket showed significantly higher surface roughness values. Crystaline MB had significantly higher surface roughness values than Inspire Ice. Micro-CT demonstrated that stainless steel brackets showed significantly higher whole and unit bracket base surface areas. Among ceramic brackets, INVU showed significantly higher whole bracket base surface area, and Crystaline MB showed a significantly higher unit bracket base surface area than Inspire Ice. Conclusion: Irregular bracket surface features showed the highest surface roughness values and unit bracket base surface area among ceramic brackets, which contributes to increased mechanically retentive bracket bonding strength.
