Issues of diversity and inclusion increasingly influence the purchasing process and brand loyalty of new generations of customers. Additionally, scholars and policymakers are calling for a more inclusive society and advocating for the integration of people with disabilities. However, there is a lack of research investigating these issues from a marketing perspective. Using a strategy of inquiry regarding in-depth multiple case studies from different players of the toy industry, this paper highlights how to set marketing strategies that develop and communicate new offerings by promoting both Marketing and Social Value and fostering the social inclusion of children with a disability. This article discusses the concept of the "disabling marketplace" and its impact on consumers with disabilities. The research in this field has largely focused on the social model of disability, which attributes marketplace inaccessibility to social and environmental barriers. However, this perspective fails to address the macro-structural ideologies that perpetuate discriminatory practices and exclusion. The article presents two themes: discriminatory marketplace practices and ableist marketplace structures, and highlights the need for future research to consider the embodied experiences of disability and dismantle the disabling marketplace. Since the 1990s, the marketing literature has seen the emergence of research dedicated to consumers with disabilities (CWD). This work is mostly based on the social model of disability, which encourages practitioners to eradicate the physical and architectural barriers faced by individuals. However, in the field of disability studies, the social model is increasingly criticised both for being too radical and for neglecting the subjective experience of disability. In this paper, we attempt to illuminate existing views, while advocating new perspectives, for conceptualising and representing disability in consumer research. With this in mind, we first briefly present the major conceptual foundations and models of disability research. Then, we systematically review marketing literature on CWD to examine the perspectives used when studying this phenomenon. Abstract: How do teachers develop and use political knowledge to create equitable and inclusive conditions for and with disabled students, particularly disabled students of color? In this essay, we build on concepts of political teacher knowledge in mathematics education, critical inclusive mathematics education and disability studies to explore teacher knowledges that support disabled students’ mathematical learning. We focus on four aspects of political knowledge for teaching mathematics: (1) knowledge as relational and unfolding over time, (2) understanding and negotiating the political contexts in which we teach mathematics, (3) deconstructing deficit discourses about marginalized students, and (4) learning to creatively resist the systems for and with our students. To develop our theoretical analysis, we use a counterstory of a middle school Latino student named Luis and his Latina mathematics teacher, Ms. Marquez. Our aim is to open up discussions in mathematics teacher educational research about the politics at play in teaching inclusive mathematics.

Ethnocentric models of disability have resulted in an ontology that rarely embraces the cultural nuances and social structures of specific countries. There have been increasing calls from scholars to expand understandings of disability beyond this hegemonic focus and develop new ways to do culturally specific and respectful inclusive work. Utilizing a novel methodological approach based on Paulo Freire's "Pedagogy of the Oppressed", we problematized past research and the current knowledge landscape of inclusive physical education (PE) in Japan. We identified that PE teachers were constantly "Grappling with Conflict" regarding their intrinsic desire to include disabled students in PE, and the cultural, institutional demands that instructed them how to teach. We drew upon numerous holistic, cultural, and Globally Eastern philosophies of thought to interpret these findings. There have been increasing calls within critical disability studies to move beyond ethnocentric Global North/Western interpretive lenses, especially when doing work in countries that have historically been oppressed by such cultures. These lenses rarely embrace the unique cultural nuances and social structures of different communities such that meaningful social justice is not possible. In this paper, we propose that cultural praxis (based on the work of Paulo Freire) could be a necessary paradigmatic shift toward amplifying disability research beyond ethnocentrism and toward culturally reflexive and relevant study. We show how we developed this methodological process through conceptual representations of our evolved thought, author reflections, and theoretical groundings. We invite dialogue from colleagues invested in socially-just research, and hope this approach begins further conversations and methods for doing meaningful, culturally specific work to achieve cultural praxis in physical education and wider realms of critical disability studies. How do advertising trade press and association resources advise practitioners on considering disabilities in advertising work? What does the industry think are effective practices for taking disabilities into account fairly and respectfully? This article answers these questions by closely reading prominent industry articles and multimedia materials focused on recommendations regarding how to take disabilities into account in advertising work. Using critical disability scholars' critiques of the advertising industry's considerations of disability as a guide, critical discourse analysis was applied to trade articles and multimedia materials published between 2018 and early 2023 by the Association of National Advertisers (ANA), Adweek, and Ad Age, all leading advertising industry trade publishers among U.S. advertising practitioners. These analyses present some emergent themes about what the industry tells itself are the effective practices to represent disabilities and reach and include people with disabilities. Careful attention is paid to the similarities and gaps between industry recommendations and scholarly and activist guidelines to see where the industry sees itself in its journey of disability diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) is the framework for describing disability. The aim of the study was to compare differences in health status between the populations of the Podkarpackie region of Poland and the Castilla y León region of Spain, using the ICF core set for post-acute musculoskeletal conditions. A total of 840 people were included in the study. The brief version of ICF core set for post-acute musculoskeletal conditions was used in the study. Information obtained from semi-structured interviews and a physiotherapy assessment was recoded into ICF qualifiers to obtain comparable data. Significant differences in functioning were found between the two samples, with a higher prevalence in all the ICF entities for the Spanish sample. Similarities were found in the ICF components 'Body Functions' and 'Environmental Factors', with the most prevalent ICF entities being 'b280 Sensation of pain' and 'e225 Climate' respectively. For 'Activities and Participation', differences were observed, with 'd430 Lifting and carrying objects' being the most common for the Spanish sample and 'd450 Walking' for the Polish sample. Significant differences were found between the two samples, indicating better musculoskeletal health in the Polish sample. Future research using the ICF Core Sets in practice should be expanded and carried out in other countries to improve the ability to make comparisons between populations and to develop policies for territorial equity in health. Within veterinary ethics and practice around companion animal end-of-life and euthanasia, the political and cultural dimensions of death and dying are rarely addressed. This reduces the ability to engage with questions like: what future potential goods (positive affective states, meaning) could an animal experience by continuing to live; what constitutes a life worth living; and how can we make this decision for another being? These are questions that have been subject to extensive dialogue within Critical Disability Studies. The aim of this paper is to provide an analysis of how core considerations from Critical Disability Studies could be useful in veterinary ethics when considering companion animal end of life and euthanasia. First, critiques of the dis/ability binary and associated hierarchies raise questions about how animal disability and illness are understood, and around challenging questions like psychological illness and behavioural euthanasia. Second, nuanced engagements with questions of a life worth living and Quality of Life emphasise the importance of individual animal experiences, personality, and the foregrounding of 'what is important for the animal'. Third, dialogues around choice and agency critique the tendency to focus on owner choice, rather asking what opportunities there are to listen to the preferences of animals themselves. Finally, engaging with care and power highlights the ambivalent nature of caregiving, of euthanasia as a practice of care, and the power intrinsic to making End of Life decisions on behalf of another. Overall, perspectives from Critical Disability Studies allow us to engage with challenging questions of veterinary ethics and end-of-life care in companion animal practice with more nuance and complexity. Background: Although motherhood plays a meaningful role in the formation of a woman's identity, most studies have focused on the process of identity transformation in the transition to motherhood among non-disabled women; less is known about this process among women with physical disabilities who become mothers. Objective: The present study aimed to understand and describe the subjective experiences of Israeli women with lifelong physical disabilities in their motherhood journey from the perspective of the intersection of their motherhood and disability identities, and from the disability studies approach. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 Israeli mothers with visible lifelong physical disabilities who live in the community and raise their children. Results: Three themes emerged from the interviews: (1) the decision to become a mother: Coping with the disability identity for the first time; (2) The FIRST 3 years: Depending on others as limiting their motherhood identity; (3) after age three: Balancing the motherhood and disability identities. Conclusion: The transition to motherhood led to identity transformation among women with physical disabilities. Becoming a mother increased the tension between dependence and independence in the context of disability, which also influenced the intersection of their motherhood and disability identities and their wellbeing. Observational studies have a critical role in disability research, providing the opportunity to address a range of research questions. Over the past decades, there have been substantial shifts and developments in statistical methods for observational studies, most notably for causal inference. In this review, we provide an overview of modern design and analysis concepts critical for observational studies, drawing examples from the field of disability research and highlighting the challenges in this field, to inform the readership on important statistical considerations for their studies. The rise of the notion of ‘inclusion’ in urban planning, seen in phrases like inclusive city, calls for a critical analysis of its evolving meaning and its spatial, social and political implications. Paradoxically, the meaning of urban inclusion has narrowed such that it now primarily refers to accessibility for people with disabilities. At the intersection of urban studies and critical disability studies, our article investigates the conceptions, criteria and modes of production underlying the implementation of urban inclusion in Singapore's ‘Enabling Village’, a purportedly inclusive space opened in 2015. We use a mixed‐methods approach, analysing official narratives and conducting site visits to understand the site as both an appropriated and a branded space. We show that, in Singapore, the inclusion agenda interacts with the city‐state's distinctive approach to planning and governance, where social issues are ‘engineered’ and give rise to replicable operational models. Our hypothesis is that implementing the inclusive city through the production and promotion of ‘inclusive’ urban projects such as the Enabling Village fuels the expansion of Singapore as a state‐led ‘entrepreneurial city’ (Harvey, Geografiska Annaler. Abstract\nIMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONA lack of multistep requesting among children with intellectual disability can be an indicator of complex communication and social challenges. This study aims to determine the effect of a systematic instruction (differential reinforcement, progressive time delay, and least-to-most prompting) using an iPad with the “GoTalk Now” app on the acquisition and maintenance of multistep requesting. Using a multiple-probe across-participants design, three children between the ages of nine and 10 diagnosed with intellectual disability participated in this study. The findings revealed that the intervention was effective in both the intervention and maintenance phases. In two participants, the change in performance occurred immediately, while in the other participant, it took more sessions to reach the acquisition criteria. Social validity data were obtained from participants’ teachers. This study introduces the concept of “timeism” to examine how ableist assumptions about time and productivity intersect to marginalize disabled workers in organizational contexts. Drawing on qualitative interviews with disabled workers in Cyprus, we explore how ableist temporalities shape experiences of marginalization and resistance in the workplace. Our analysis reveals that disabled workers navigate and resist marginalizing temporal expectations while also internalizing normative pressures around pace and productivity. The study makes three key contributions: (1) it conceptualizes timeism as a theoretical framework for understanding the temporal dimensions of ableism in organizations; (2) it empirically demonstrates how timeist norms create interlocking disadvantages for disabled employees; and (3) it highlights the importance of an intersectional approach to understanding experiences of time and ableism in the workplace. The COVID‐19 pandemic's disruption of conventional work rhythms provides a unique opportunity to rethink temporal norms and develop more inclusive practices. Dutch school-based sexuality education, renowned for its progressiveness and positive impact on sexual health, has been criticised for advancing a limited, yet dominant discourse on sexuality shaped by societal and political factors. Critics have argued that it perpetuates a narrow conception of ‘normal’ sexuality tied to neoliberal, secular, able-bodied, white, heteronormative norms. This inadvertently excludes certain social groups, such as people with disabilities. While the exclusion of people with disabilities has been critiqued by crip theory, an unexplored area remains: how does ‘normal’ sexuality manifest itself in tailored sexuality education for students with disabilities? This study focused specifically on children who faced psychological and behavioural challenges. By means of a case study, interviews, observations, and discourse analysis, the research revealed that, despite flexibility, the curriculum and implementation of sexuality education for the members of this group still retains aspects of ‘normal’ sexuality. Based on our findings, we advocate for further exploration of sexuality education for students with special educational needs, incorporating perspectives from individuals with disabilities, teachers and experts. To promote a more inclusive approach to sexuality education, we recommend providing formal training to educators to guide them in navigating these issues in the classroom implementation of sexuality education. This essay is inspired by a moment at the conclusion of Julia Watts Belser's Loving Our Own Bones: Disability Wisdom and the Spiritual Subversiveness of Knowing Ourselves Whole (2023). It takes Belser's stated desire to "know the sacred through a thousand disabled languages" as an invitation to think about the risks and rewards of imagining the divine in and through others' differences. It places Belser's insights in conversation with the author's own research into mid-twentieth century Catholic engagements with cognitive impairment in the United States, what the essay calls "disability theology before disability theology," and uses that conversation to return to what have been some enduring impasses in disability studies. AbstractIn Disability and the Problem of Lazy Intersectionality, Watermeyer and Swartz attempt to address the growing incorporation of intersectionality within the field of disability studies. Yet, Watermeyer and Swartz’s critique feeds into the very issues they seek to refute, including through centring disability above the interlocking systems of power that intersectionality necessitates. In this paper, we engage with their core arguments, illustrating their critical limitations. We conclude by suggesting that only foregrounding disability, as the authors propose, legitimises the non-reflexive co-optation of Black politicised epistemic strategies of justice for global disability scholars and lends other categories of analysis to erasure. Topics include the depiction of misfits as ghosts in legends, offering cultural guidance on understanding disabilities, and the fluidity between human and supernatural identities in folklore.

This paper analyses the impact of disability on the social identities of siblings of young people and adults with cognitive disabilities. The main aim is to empirically support the concept of 'disability by association', which refers to the attribution of an associative identity due to the presence of a disabled member in the family. Evidence is drawn from a qualitative study, made up of 32 in-depth interviews and two focus groups with siblings without disabilities. The results confirmed the impact of interactive effects on the lives and behaviours of the interviewees. The internalisation of the oppression experienced by siblings, even in the absence of actual negative incidents, limits their social life experience and identity construction. Although the siblings develop non-medical representations of disability and impairment, this conceptual repertoire is not strong enough to challenge devalued images of cognitive disability. Points of interest: Siblings' points of view are underdeveloped, while most studies focused on parents' perspectives. The research found that siblings have different views on disability and impairment than parents. Siblings may experience stigma and exclusion due to their brothers and sisters' disability. Mobility can involve many barriers that make it challenging for individuals with disabilities to travel. When it is a child who has a disability, the whole family's mobility practices can be affected by those barriers since families' mobilities are often intertwined. This paper is based on time-use diaries and interviews with parents of wheelchair-using children living in Sweden. A time-geographical framework is used in the paper, especially focusing on the concept of coupling constraints, which can emerge when individuals need to be together to perform an activity, such as mobility. The main focus is on how coupling constraints between parents and the disabled child affect mobilities, but the findings show that couplings also exist with authorities and things and these can increase coupling constraints within the family. However, if being eligible for personal assistance and special transport service the coupling constraints within the family can decrease, indicating that such support systems are fundamental for these families' mobilities. For people with severe or profound intellectual disability (ID), support staff are important interaction partners. The quality of their interactions, a multidimensional construct, is well documented, but the staff perspective remains underexposed. This study aims to capture the behaviors, thoughts, and emotions of staff when interacting with their clients, and their views on what constitutes quality. Thirty-four support staff completed a 5-day diary about a daily interaction with a specific client. A thematic analysis was carried out. The diary entries depicted behaviors and thoughts with different foci, and emotions with positive and negative valences. The pursuit of Harmonization and the experience of Return emerged as overarching dimensions central to staff's views on quality interaction. Drawing from critical disability studies and cultural studies, this article unpacks cultural understandings of digital abilities. We analyse policy documents on digital education as cultural texts which communicate cultural values. Methodologically, we understand policy ideas as deriving from the larger culture. Our analysis first explores how abilities are connected to economic growth, as well as what kind of history of ideas frames this presumption. Second, it explores the assumption of constantly changing technologies and the workers who must adapt themselves to such a situation. Third, the article interrogates citizenship as a cultural idea within the current policy ideas about digital skills. Our account offers new perspectives on the analysis of biocapitalism and provides a specific analysis of how able-mindedness is foregrounded in digital education. It argues that digitalisation, as a policy matter, intensifies discourses emphasising the development of abilities and that this social tendency is neither value neutral nor necessary. In this methodological paper, we respond to the call to advance a disability justice agenda within social science research. To do so, we invite readers to engage with the intersections of discursive psychology and disability theories. Specifically, we forward new possibilities for methodologically and theoretically leveraging discursive psychology to study disability, ableism, and anti-ableism as they unfold in everyday life. To do so, we offer a general overview of core concepts from some disability studies perspectives and point to the possibilities of discursive psychology engaging at the level of theory and methodology with these perspectives. Mixed methods research (MMR) can serve to bridge fields of study disconnected by differences in content, epistemologies, and methods. Such bridging can benefit fields that are interconnected in practice but generally separated in research, such as educational research with its silos of "general" and "special" education in addition to various topic area foci. We explored the extent to which MMR has bridged education research silos by examining the prevalence of MMR studying a single topic (disability) across three subfields: general education, special education, and disability studies in education. We found differences in the prevalence of MMR between subfields and journals within subfields. We discuss patterns in ways MMR may both reflect silos and be employed to bridge long-standing divides. Grounded in an analysis of the Netflix series Dahmer-Monster, this article offers a theory concerning mass consumption of crime drama. Refracted by scholarship on ableism and speciesism, I argue that Dahmer-Monster (and comparable shows) can be understood as mediated "freak show." Crime drama offers images of "abnormality" that provide a surface upon which conceptions of normalcy can be (re)inscribed. Audiences are assured of their normality via this process. The article speaks to critical criminologists and critical disability studies scholarship. Consistent with nascent "crip criminology," it suggests that there is much scope for further dialogue across these areas. As a cultural site, crime media is saturated by ableism, yet it has not been subject to much scrutiny by critical disabilities studies scholarship. And, while much criminological attention is devoted to cultural portrayals of crime, ableism and speciesism have not been central categories to such analyses. Disability studies is an interdisciplinary field investigating the nature of disability as a social and cultural phenomenon. Since the mid-2000s, legal scholars have been employing a disability studies lens to explore legal doctrine and the treatment of people with disabilities under the law. This article identifies a nascent scholarly movement I call empirical disability legal studies: utilizing both a disability studies lens and empirical methods associated with the social sciences to study disability law. Legal scholars have used empirical methods, involving an analysis of quantitative or qualitative data, to explore three main themes: the experiences of disabled individuals within the formal legal system, the negotiations of disability rights in everyday life outside of formal legal institutions, and the construction of disability in legal texts. This article calls for more scholars to do work in the empirical disability legal studies tradition and puts forward new unexplored paths to expand such inquiry into the legal treatment of disability. The article focuses on a close analysis of The Doloriad, a 2022 debut novel by Missouri Williams. The post-apocalyptic text is read as a critical dystopia, which, while representing a destroyed world inhabited by degenerated humanity, implies a possibility of a better reality in the future. Examining the novel's employment of disability in the context of disability studies, in particular, in view of the concept of narrative prosthesis, and employing Yi-Fu Tuan's distinction between space and place to understand the core conflict between world orders and the characters associated with them, the author argues that The Doloriad can be perceived as an unusual text in which the utopian impulse is correlated with the novum (sensu Darko Suvin) of disability. This article lies at the intersection of migration studies and disability studies and aims to contribute to redressing the considerable gap in knowledge regarding disabled voluntary migrants. These two areas, migration and disability, respectively, have rarely been considered together, a significant gap given the situation faced by disabled migrants and crosscutting issues confronting disabled people and migrants. Dynamics of exclusion are viewed as a shared experience of migrants, disabled people and disabled migrants. This paper is based on qualitative semi-structured interviews with voluntary EU migrants to the UK, disabled British people and disabled EU migrants, which are supplemented by key informant interviews. All were conducted in 2019 in the north of England. The findings highlight that when migration and disability are considered concurrently, barriers multiply and result in a nuanced disadvantage and experiences of social marginalisation. Migrant and disability experience translates into social vulnerability and is a contributing cause of exclusion in relation to social expectations and mainstream services. This paper concludes that there is an urgent need to change the narrative and perception that migrant and disabled people are less worthy of attention and bring their needs to the fore. This study documents how the COVID-19 pandemic affected the livelihoods of women with disabilities in three low-income urban areas of Zimbabwe's Harare Metropolitan Province. A mixed-method approach was used to gather data through structured interviews, key informant interviews, and focus group discussions with 104 women with disabilities and service providers working with women with disabilities in Caledonia, Hatcliffe, and Epworth. The study utilises the sustainable livelihood approach to analyse the dynamics ensuing during the pandemic and how they impinged on women with disabilities' livelihoods. Findings reveal that the pandemic, particularly the lockdowns, greatly and negatively impacted the livelihoods of women with disabilities, who mainly depend on the informal sector through vending, begging, and handouts. The study recommends the provision of targeted sustainable social safety nets for women with disabilities in times of shocks and stresses such as pandemics to cushion them from the devastating effects brought about by such eventualities. Insider research poses a range of benefits and challenges for researchers and the communities being researched. It is commonly advocated for disability research but there is limited work exploring disabled researchers' experiences. Influenced by autoethnography and through a process of asynchronous structured conversations, we reflected on our experiences as two blind researchers. Through our collective reflective process and analysis, we created three main themes: insider research is complex and subjective, there is judgment about the "right" thing to do, and insider research requires "different" work. We argue that insiderness is more than sharing characteristics: it is a situated, fluctuating, and "felt" experience. The complexities, judgments, and emotional labor associated with insider research can challenge researchers in potentially very personal and unexpected ways. We propose that further investigation is required about how researchers can best prepare for, engage ethically throughout, and be supported through the insider research process. She examines the role of DS in looking at her artworks as autoethnographies. Disability studies have been successfully focusing on individuals' lived experiences, the personalization of goals, and the constitution of the individual in defining disease and restructuring public understandings of disability. Although they had a strong influence in the policy making and medical modeling of disease, their framework has not been translated to traditional naturalistic accounts of disease. I will argue that, using new developments in evolutionary biology (Extended Evolutionary Synthesis [EES] about questions of proper function) and behavioral ecology (Niche conformance and construction about the questions of reference classes in biostatistics accounts), the main elements of the framework of disability studies can be used to represent life histories at the conceptual level of the two main "non-normative" accounts of disease. I chose these accounts since they are related to medicine in a more descriptive way. The success of the practical aspects of disability studies this way will be communicated without causing injustice to the individual since they will represent the individuality of the patient in two main naturalistic accounts of disease: the biostatistical account and the evolutionary functional account. Although most accounts criticizing the concept of disease as value-laden do not supply a positive element, disability studies can supply a good point for descriptive extension of the concept through inclusion of epistemic agency. Shakespeare's play Richard III represents a fascinating phenomenon from the perspective of critical disability studies. On the one hand, his portrayal stands at the root of the much-criticised link between evil intentions and a physical deformity; on the other, the play allows Richard to reclaim some of the agency of his own corporeality, as he uses his body to gain his political goals. Translations of this play inevitably mirror contemporary views of non-normative bodies, and the two Slovak versions of the play marking the immediate aftermath of World War II and the last years of the communist rule in former Czechoslovakia provide an ideal ground for observing these shifts against the backdrop of significant sociopolitical changes. This article explores how the subtle nuances in individual translated versions reshape Richard's image, and ultimately highlights the changing historical narratives of disability translated for different generations of Slovak readers and theatregoers. Family–school collaborative practice is protected by legislation: the Individual with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) identifies parents as equal members of a multidisciplinary team. However, the discourse of parent involvement, defined by IDEIA (2004) policy, positions Latinx families of dis/abled children and upholds injustices by ignoring systematic racism, linguicism, and socioeconomic inequities. The current expectations for parent involvement do not consider the cultural patterns of families of dis/abled children as they support the developmental and academic goals of their children. This article problematizes an educational system that seeks to categorize, not only dis/abled children, but view their families as having deficits, which disproportionately impacts multilingual families of dis/abled children. By highlighting the origins, cultures, and experiences of Latinx mothers of dis/abled children, disability critical race (DisCrit) theory is expanded to deeply examine cultural identity to challenge the discourse of parent involvement entangled with linguicism, racism and ableist ideology. Disabled people face many social problems in their lives, as outlined by the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. These problems often increase when disabled people also belong to another marginalized identity. The first aim of this study was to report on the extent and what intersectionalities are mentioned in academic abstracts in conjunction with disabled people. Various intersectional concepts are used to discuss intersectionality-related issues. The second aim was to ascertain the use of intersectionality-based concepts to discuss the intersectionality of disabled people. The field of intersectional pedagogy emerged to discuss the teaching of intersectionality linked to various marginalized identities. The third aim was to ascertain the coverage of how to teach about the intersectionality of disabled people in the intersectional pedagogy-focused academic literature we covered. Ability judgments are a general cultural reality. Many ability judgment-based concepts have been developed within the disability rights movement, disability studies, and ability-based studies that could be used to discuss the impact of ability judgments on the intersectionality of disabled people and enrich the area of intersectional pedagogy. The fourth aim was to ascertain the use of ability judgment-based concepts to analyze the intersectionality of disabled people. To obtain data for the four aims, we performed a manifest coding and qualitative content analysis of abstracts obtained from SCOPUS, the 70 databases of EBSCO-HOST and Web of Science, and an online survey in which we ascertained the views of undergraduate students on social groups experiencing negative ability-based judgments. As to the 34,830 abstracts that contained the term "intersectionality"; the 259,501 abstracts that contained the phrase "intersection of"; and the 11,653 abstracts that contained the 35 intersectionality-based concepts, the numbers for these abstracts that also contained the disability terms we used for our analysis were 753, 2058, and 274 abstracts, respectively, so 2.16%, 0.79%, and 2.35%, indicating a low academic engagement with the intersectionality of disabled people. We found many different intersectionalities mentioned in conjunction with disabled people, but most were mentioned only once or twice, with the main ones mentioned being race and gender. The literature covered made little use of most of the 52 intersectionality-based concepts we looked at (35 identified before the study and 17 more identified during the analysis). The literature covered also did not link to the area of intersectional pedagogy. Of the 25 ability judgment-based concepts, only the term ableism was used. As to the surveys, most students saw many of the social groups experiencing negative ability judgments, suggesting that the ability judgment-based concepts might be a useful tool to discuss intersectional consequences of ability judgments, such as intersectional conflict. Our data might be useful for intersectionality studies, intersectional pedagogy, disability studies, ability-based studies, and other academic fields that engage with intersectionality or with disability issues. Video games are known for many things, but nuanced portrayals of characters with mental illness might not be one of them. This trend, however, has gradually started to shift with games like Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, which aim to convey a genuine experience of mental illness to the player. Through a close reading of different instances in the game, this paper shows how Hellblade complicates the usual sanist ideas seen in most other games by taking an ambiguous stance, using mental illness as a representational tool. Furthermore, it avoids some of the more sensationalist and problematic tropes often employed in such representations, like the supercrip and the Cartesian divide of the body and mind. In order to show this, we have employed Mitchel and Snyder's concept of narrative prosthesis to demonstrate how the game does not in fact rely on Senua's disability as an exotic feature of the narrative to hook players in. By combining insights from disability and mad studies, we show how this game is a step in the right direction when it comes to challenging the perceptions of mental illness prevalent in pop culture. Background Musculoskeletal diseases are 4th-leading disease burden for geriatrics. Objectives The study was conducted with the aim of identifying the factors related to better musculoskeletal health and disability. Materials and Methods This observational analytical epidemiological study was conducted in the Bankura district, West Bengal, India, among 101 geriatric people aged 60 years or above. At least 10 geriatrics were selected by simple random sampling method from each of 9 community development blocks and one municipality. Data were collected by interviewing them using a questionnaire including Musculoskeletal Health Questionnaire (MSK HQ), World Health Organization Disability Assessment Scale (DAS) 2.0, and the 5-item Geriatric Depression Scale. Statistically significant (P ≤ 0.05) independent variables in multi-variable analysis were considered for multivariable linear regression. Results Median score and interquartile range of MSK HQ score were 41.00 and 8.00, respectively (range 0–56) and mean and standard deviation of DAS were 24.45 ± 4.757 (range 0–48). Higher MSK HQ Score and DAS score indicate better musculoskeletal health and higher disability, respectively. Multi-variable linear regression found that normal body mass index, absence of metabolic risk, absence of depression, and adequate sleep explained 3.6%, 8.4%, 11.8%, and 31.3% variation of better musculoskeletal health. On the other hand, metabolic risk, depression, red meat consumption, present occupation, and family history of arthritis explained 3.0%, 3.4%, 3.8%, 7.0%, and 24.4% variation of higher disability. Conclusions Screening for depression, metabolic risk, and obesity with early interventions is the road to better musculoskeletal health among geriatrics.

Royal illness and disability recur as motifs within the accounts of the Davidic monarchs provided in the books of Samuel and Kings. Recent work done on the intersection of disability studies and the Hebrew Bible provides a framework for tracing this motif throughout the history of the southern kingdom in 1 and 2 Kings. Under this framework, kings who are identified as acting righteously in the eyes of YHWH like their father David—Asa, Azariah, and Hezekiah—are kings who experience royal illness and disability. This paper considers how these instances of royal illness and disability informs the ideal for ancient Israel and Judah’s monarchs.

In this note, we introduce readers to St Paul of the Thorns, a painting by Elizabeth Tooth, which is part of an exhibition entitled Reimagining Paul. Using visual arts interpretive methodologies, disability studies, exegesis of 2 Corinthians, and exhibition visitor feedback, we consider the distinctive contribution of visual art to discussions of the apostle Paul and disability. We also reflect on the reciprocal learning potential of public engagement work for the academic study of biblical texts and figures.

Representations of dyslexia have a history of educational and literary scholarship primarily concerned with how dynamic characters with learning disabilities are and if they are positively portrayed. This article uses narrative theory to analyze how diagnosis operates on a structural level to create what I call the dyslexic diagnosis paradigm. Examining school stories featuring characters with dyslexia published between 2007 and 2020, I demonstrate how this paradigm functions through a structural closure of struggle, diagnosis and accommodations, and a psychological closure consisting of shame, declaration, and acceptance within these novels. Variations or polytypes of this narrative are also common within this corpus which maintain the psychological closure of shame, declaration, and acceptance present within the prototypical narrative. While some disability counternarratives or dyslexic persistence narratives nuance the school story, the dyslexic diagnosis paradigm ultimately remains prevalent and upholds the medical model of disability within the educational system, promoting the flawed status quo of disability rather than asking readers to question the validity of the systems which enforce them. Despite the fact that disability makes up the largest minority in the world, training in psychology in South Africa today does not give viable mention to the challenges associated to living with disability. Indeed, disability studies and psychology have had an awkward relationship for various reasons, resulting in lack of engagement with disability rights issues in the field of South African psychology. The article discusses what we see as the hiddenness of disability in and from South African psychology, despite disability's argued centrality to South Africa's history and present. After presenting key issues in the history of disability rights both globally and locally, the article moves to discuss the tendency of silencing disabled academics and of disability studies within psychology in the country. The stories of two disabled psychologists and academics are shared to illustrate how society is controlled along biopolitical lines, namely that of compulsory able-bodiedness, resulting in the continued silencing of disabled psychology academics; and the continued binary of 'us vs them', the able-bodied versus disabled, remains. Arguably, focusing on disability oppression and exclusion provides a way into understanding other forms of exclusion and oppression, including racial and gender oppression. We need to continue to integrate psychology and disability studies by celebrating disabled psychologists and encouraging psychological reflections on disabled experiences. This article investigates representations of individuals with disabilities in Indonesian news media by drawing on corpus-assisted discourse study, social actor analysis, and news models of disability. The data comprises news articles which refer to disability published on popular Indonesian online news platforms over a ten-year period (2011–2020). The findings reveal prevalent portrayals of disabled people as passive beneficiaries and objects of representation, which implies a tendency to diminish their active involvement in society, supporting the social pathology model of disability. The progressive models, including the civil rights and consumer models, which highlight the active participation of disabled people, are limited. The article concludes by emphasising the need for a more balanced portrayal of disabled individuals by incorporating more news articles that underscore their agency. It also recommends the integration of diverse viewpoints from individuals with disabilities to attain a more comprehensive understanding of their challenges and perspectives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This review essay explores how two recent books, Sony Coráñez Bolton's Crip Colony. Mestizaje, US Imperialism, and the Queer Politics of Disability in the Philippines (2023) and Rosario Hubert’s Disoriented Disciplines. China, Latin America, and the Shape of World Literature (2024) undertake the methodological challenges that the study of Asian-Latin(x) American relations presents for literary and cultural studies. Although the two books have different academic audiences and disciplinary trajectories within the US academy, this review essay considers how they redefine notions of literary and cultural circulation or immobility, translation, access, capacity, incapacitation, and infrastructure. The essay argues that we can identify three methodological concerns that address specific problems related to the study of Asian Latinx American relations: an innovative interrogation of the travel literature genre, an understanding of translation as a critical practice that includes non-linguistic aspects and diverse forms of ability and perception, and a particular attention to what Diana Taylor has called the repertoire. Through two divergent comparativist itineraries – Critical Ethnic Studies and World Literature debates – the two books tackle in original ways the conditions of (im)possibility of Asia-Latin America as a geopolitical framework and archival formation. AbstractExisting occupational therapy literature focuses on sensory and developmental needs for newly adopted children but has not considered the ongoing needs of adoptive families from a disability studies perspective. This study surveyed adoptive families with minor children about their post-adoption stress and support needs (N = 127). Findings indicated elevated rates of neurodevelopmental disorders and associated stress related to finding and affording supports that are adoption and trauma-informed, and adjusting to changing needs over time. Support for adoptive families includes education, advocacy, and direct intervention, supporting family member’s changing needs over time, and navigating but not fixing many support needs.
