1. Transcriptomic profiling of backfat and muscle in Lijiang pigs with divergent body size across growth stages

Abstract: Abstract Backfat thickness is an important economic trait that affects pork quality and flavor. The Lijiang pig (LJP), a local breed in Yunnan province, China, exhibits variations in growth and body composition. However, the molecular basis for these variations is unclear. This study aimed to analyze transcriptome profiles of backfat at different growth stages in LJP with discrepant body size: two months (M2), four months, and six months. Firstly, we analyzed the gene expression differences and discovered a significantly highest number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) at the M2 stage. Secondly, we identified four gene profiles with reverse expression trends in LJP populations with different body sizes, and the related genes mainly associated with immune response functionality. Thirdly, we observed a lower correlation in LJP with large body size at the M2 stage, with a specific enrichment of DEGs with high genetic differentiation related to neural activity. Finally, we correlated transcriptome profiles of muscle and backfat and discovered the lowest correlation at the M2 stage. Highly correlated genes exhibited more significant differences and were prominently enriched for immune response processes. This study unveils candidate genes linked to backfat growth in LJP, emphasizing the specificity of the early growth stage of backfat.

2. Spectral Unmixing of Pigments on Surface of Painted Artefacts Considering Spectral Variability

Abstract: Painted artefacts, such as murals and paintings, are the treasures of human civilization. Pigment is an important component of their surfaces. It is crucial to study the composition and proportion of pigments on the surface of painted artefacts for the field of heritage conservation. In this study, hyperspectral remote sensing was used to invert the abundance of mixed pigments by spectral unmixing. Spectral variability effects are often present in hyperspectral images. Hyperspectral images of cultural artefacts also suffer from spectral variability due to factors such as particle size and impurities within the pigment, and acquisition conditions. Therefore, spectral variability was incorporated into the Linear Mixed Model of the pigment spectral unmixing. The unmixing methods are classified into two categories based on whether or not spectral libraries are used. In the experiment, computer synthesized data and laboratory-made sample blocks of mixed pigments, which mixed with different ratios of Azurite and Malachite, were selected as validation data. Five commonly used algorithms for solving the spectral variability problem, namely MESMA, Fractional Sparse SU, ELMM, RUSAL, and BCM, are used for pigment unmixing and compared with FCLS, which does not consider spectral variability. The results show that ELMM has the highest unmixing accuracy of aRMSE and xRMSE compared to other methods. At the same time, it can be seen from the metric of SAM that ELMM is able to extract reliable endmember variability spectral, which is more suitable for solving the problem of spectral variability in pigment unmixing. Finally, we apply ELMM to real artefacts Yungang Grottoes mural paintings, and obtain a lower xRMSE than FCLS, which improves the unmixing accuracy.

3. Study on cutting temperatures of SiCp ∕ Al composites for ultrasonic vibration-assisted cutting

Abstract: In order to deeply understand the cutting mechanism of SiCp / Al in ultrasonic vibration-assisted turning, a prediction model of a cutting temperature field of SiCp / Al composites in UVAC (ultrasonic vibration-assisted cutting) was established. A theoretical model of instantaneous cutting depth and transient shear angle was established considering the real-time changing cutting depth, tool front angle and shear angle characteristics of UVAC. The relationship between cutting speed, shear speed and chip flow speed in UVAC processes is revealed, as well as the shear force and the front cutter friction force. Finally, the influence of heat generated by the heat source zone and shear heat source zone on the temperature rise was calculated, and the temperature field model was established. The experiment of processing SiCp / Al composites by UVAC was carried out. SiCp / Al composites with 25 % volume fraction were turned, and the cutting temperature data were measured and recorded by an infrared thermal imaging device. The cutting speed, cutting depth and feed rate were tested by a single factor, and the changes in cutting temperature under different parameters were compared. Finally, the experimental data were compared with the theoretical values to verify the validity of the theoretical model.

Abstract: The calcium isotopes are an ideal system to investigate the evolution of shell structure and magic numbers. Although the properties of surface nucleons in calcium have been well studied, probing the structure of deeply bound nucleons remains a challenge. Here, we report on the first measurement of unbound states in 53Ca and 55Ca, populated from 54,56Ca(p,pn) reactions at a beam energy of around 216 MeV/nucleon at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotopes Beam Factory. The resonance properties, partial cross sections, and momentum distributions of these unbound states were analyzed. Orbital angular momentum l assignments were extracted from momentum distributions based on calculations using the distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA) reaction model. The resonances at excitation energies of 5516(41)keV in 53Ca and 6000(250)keV in 55Ca indicate a significant l =3 component, providing the first experimental evidence for the ν0f7/2 single-particle strength of unbound hole states in the neutron-rich Ca isotopes. The observed excitation energies and cross-sections point towards extremely localized and well separated strength distributions, with some fragmentation for the ν0f7/2 orbital in 55Ca. These results are in good agreement with predictions from shell-model calculations using the effective GXPF1Bs interaction and ab initio calculations and diverge markedly from the experimental distributions in the nickel isotones at Z=28.

5. Vibrational Analysis and Optimization of a Water Injection Pipeline in a High-pressure Plunger Pump

Abstract: The vibration of water injection pipeline systems in oilfields creates challenges in terms of safe long-term operation. To fully understand the vibration mechanism of plunger-powered high-pressure water injection pipelines, we conducted fluid pressure pulsation calculations and fluid structure coupling modal evaluations using finite element analysis software to study the effects of pressure, pipe length, and pipe clamp on the vibrations. The results indicate that the total displacement increases with increasing pressure, although the magnitude of the increment gradually decreases. The pipe length has a significant impact on the natural frequency. Based on the findings of the present study, we proposed that pipe clamps could be introduced to reduce the vibrations in an existing high-pressure plunger pump water injection pipeline, and the overall design was optimized. Comparative modal analysis revealed the most practical number and position of the pipe clamps to be suitable for a pressure range of 42–70 MPa.

6. Spatial distribution of oceanic moisture contributions to precipitation over the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract: Evaporation from global oceans is an important moisture source for glaciers and headwaters of major Asian rivers in the Tibetan Plateau (TP). Although the accelerated global hydrological cycle, the altered sea–land thermal contrast and the amplified warming rate over the TP during the past several decades are known to have profound effects on the regional water balance, the spatial distribution of oceanic moisture contributions to the vast TP remains unclear. This hinders the accurate quantification of regional water budgets and the reasonable interpretation of water isotope records from observations and paleo archives. Based on historical data and moisture tracking, this study systematically quantifies the absolute and relative contributions of oceanic moisture to long-term precipitation in the TP. Results show that the seasonal absolute and relative oceanic contributions are generally out of phase, revealing the previously underestimated oceanic moisture contributions brought by the westerlies in winter and the overestimated moisture contributions from the Indian Ocean in summer. Quantitatively, the relative contribution of moisture from the Indian Ocean is only ∼30 % in the south TP and further decreases to below 10 % in the northernmost TP. The absolute oceanic contribution exhibits a spatial pattern consistent with the dipole pattern of long-term precipitation trends across the Brahmaputra Canyon region and the central-northern TP. In comparison, relative oceanic contributions show strong seasonal patterns associated with the seasonality of precipitation isotopes across the TP.

Abstract: Gamma decays were observed in 56Ca and 58Ca following quasi-free one-proton knockout reactions from 57,59Sc beams at ≈200 MeV/nucleon. For 56Ca, a γ ray transition was measured to be 1456(12) keV, while for 58Ca an indication for a transition was observed at 1115(34) keV. Both transitions were tentatively assigned as the 21+→0gs+ decays, and were compared to results from ab initio and conventional shell-model approaches. A shell-model calculation in a wide model space with a marginally modified effective nucleon-nucleon interaction depicts excellent agreement with experiment for 21+ level energies, two-neutron separation energies, and reaction cross sections, corroborating the formation of a new nuclear shell above the N = 34 shell. Its constituents, the 0f5/2 and 0g9/2 orbitals, are almost degenerate. This degeneracy precludes the possibility for a doubly magic 60Ca and potentially drives the dripline of Ca isotopes to 70Ca or even beyond.

8. Quantifying overlapping and differing information of global precipitation for GCM forecasts and El Niño–Southern Oscillation

Abstract: While El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) teleconnection has long been used in statistical precipitation forecasting, global climate models (GCMs) provide increasingly available dynamical precipitation forecasts for hydrological modeling and water resources management. It is not yet known to what extent dynamical GCM forecasts provide new information compared to statistical teleconnection. This paper develops a novel set operations of coefficients of determination (SOCD) method to explicitly quantify the overlapping and differing information for GCM forecasts and ENSO teleconnection. Specifically, the intersection operation of the coefficient of determination derives the overlapping information for GCM forecasts and the Niño3.4 index, and then the difference operation determines the differing information in GCM forecasts (Niño3.4 index) from the Niño3.4 index (GCM forecasts). A case study is devised for the Climate Forecast System version 2 (CFSv2) seasonal forecasts of global precipitation in December–January–February. The results show that the overlapping information for GCM forecasts and the Niño3.4 index is significant for 34.94 % of the global land grid cells, that the differing information in GCM forecasts from the Niño3.4 index is significant for 31.18 % of the grid cells and that the differing information in the Niño3.4 index from GCM forecasts is significant for 11.37 % of the grid cells. These results confirm the effectiveness of GCMs in capturing the ENSO-related variability of global precipitation and illustrate where there is room for improvement of GCM forecasts. Furthermore, the bootstrapping significance tests of the three types of information facilitate in total eight patterns to disentangle the close but divergent associations of GCM forecast correlation skill with ENSO teleconnection.

9. Observations of Five Major Uranian Satellites during 2013–2020 Based on Gaia DR3

Abstract: A total of 10,339 positions of the five major Uranian satellites (Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, Oberon and Miranda) were collected at the Yunnan Observatories from 2013 to 2020 with the 1.0 m astrometric reflector. A median filtering method was applied to reduce the influence of the bright Uranus halo. All CCD observational data was analyzed by the newly developed CCD image-processing software with Gaia DR3 as the reference catalog. The impact of different exposure times on satellite positioning accuracy was evaluated. The observational positions of satellites were compared with theoretical positions from Institut de Mécanique Céleste et de Calcul des Éphémérides (DE441 and Lainey et al. 2015) and the mean offsets are from −0.″115 to 0.″103 in both R.A. and decl. for the five satellites. The standard deviation of the offsets are from 0.″008 to 0.″086 for the four greatest Uranian satellites and from 0.″037 to 0.″132 for Miranda in each direction. These precise observations of the five major Uranian satellites over an 8 yr period will be very useful for improving the orbital parameters of both Uranus and its five major satellites.

10. Contribution of moisture sources to precipitation changes in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region

Abstract: Precipitation changes in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region (TGRR) play a critical role in the operation and regulation of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) and the protection of residents and properties. The potential impacts of the TGD on local and regional circulation patterns, especially the precipitation patterns, have received considerable attention since its construction. However, how the moisture transport affects precipitation changes in the TGRR spatially and temporally remains obscure. In this study, we investigate the long-term moisture sources of precipitation and their contributions to precipitation changes over the TGRR using an atmospheric moisture tracking model. Results suggest that although there is seasonal variation, the moisture contributing to the TGRR precipitation primarily originates from the areas southwest of the TGRR dominated by the Indian summer monsoon. In particular, the sources with the highest annual moisture contribution are the southwestern part of the Yangtze River basin and the southeastern tip of the Tibetan Plateau (TP). On average, 41 %, 56 %, and 3 % of the TGRR precipitation originates from ocean, land, and local recycling, respectively. In addition, the decreased precipitation over the TGRR during 1979–2015 is mainly attributed to the significantly decreased moisture contribution from the source regions southwest of the TGRR (especially around the southeastern tip of the TP). Compared to dry years, the higher precipitation in the TGRR during wet years is contributed by the extra moisture from the southwestern source regions that is delivered by the intensified southwesterly monsoon winds.

11. Urban flood modelling in Qiqihar city based on MIKE flood

Abstract: Qiqihar is a significant city on the Nen River in China, which is the main stream of the Songhua River basin. The length of the return period of Qiqihar's flood control design standard is fifty years. If a 100-year flood event happened, Qiqihar would face the risk of a burst levee. To quantitatively evaluate flood risk to the city from a burst levee or proactive flood diversion, a model for analysing flood submergence from a burst levee in the City of Qiqihar is established based on MIKE Flood. The model integrates one- and two-dimensional hydrodynamic models to implement coupled simulation. The terrain data are from city elevation data on a scale of 1:10 000. Following local modifications made based on survey data, such as on levees, roads, and buildings, a 20 m × 20 m grid of terrain data was formed as the terrain input of the model. The model simulates the water level of Nen River and the flood path, submerged time/depth/area, and duration in floodplain under three scenarios: baseline, proactive downstream flood diversion, and an upstream levee burst under a flood with a one hundred-year return period. Proactive downstream flood diversion can reduce the maximum water level by 0.068 m and correspondingly decrease peak flood flow by 1120 m3 s−1. These results provide basic information to support urban flood risk analysis and flood dispatching and management across the whole river basin.

12. Evolution of Urban Flooding in China

Abstract: With the rapid development of cities in China, urban flooding becomes a growing problem, which not only affect the living quality of the public, but also threatens urban safety. Recently, urban flooding is attached more attention. By analyzing and summarizing urban flooding data from recent decades, which includes frequency, scope of influence, and losses, the causes and status quo of urban flooding problems in China is generalized from varied perspectives of urban climate change, urban planning, urban construction, urban management and policy. The data shows that the number of cities suffered from urban flooding increased by approximately 30 % since 1980s, while the average frequency of urban flood increased from nearly 1 time in every 2 years to more than 3 times per year in some major cities that face serious urban flooding risks. Even for those cities located in west-northern and semi-arid regions, such as Taiyuan in Shanxi province, they also suffered from urban flooding. Prevention and control measures like the constriction of sponge city, the upgrade of drainage system, and the promotion of relative policies are suggested.

Abstract: Worldwide, a relevant surface of arable lands is facing salt stress, and this surface is increasing continuously due to both natural and anthropogenic activities. Nitric oxide (NO) is a small, gaseous molecule with a plethora of physiological roles in plants. In addition to its normal physiological functions, NO protects plants subjected to different environmental cues including salinity. For example, NO mediates photosynthesis and stomatal conductance, stimulates the activity of Na+/H+ antiport in tonoplast, promotes the biosynthesis of osmolytes, and counteracts overaccumulation of reactive oxygen species in plant cells under salt stress. Exogenous NO is also beneficial for plants subjected to salinity, in which it increases salinity tolerance via growth promotion, reversing oxidative damage, and maintaining ion homeostasis. This review provides a comprehensive picture of the NO-mediated mechanisms in plants, resulting in salinity tolerance with a particular focus on the photosynthetic processes, the antioxidant patterns as well as the cross-talk with other regulatory compounds in plant cells.

Abstract: States in the N=35 and 37 isotopes 55,57Ca have been populated by direct proton-induced nucleon removal reactions from 56,58Sc and 56Ca beams at the RIBF. In addition, the (p,2p) quasi-free single-proton removal reaction from 56Ca was studied. Excited states in 55K, 55Ca, and 57Ca were established for the first time via in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy. Results for the proton and neutron removal reactions from 56Ca to states in 55K and 55Ca for the level energies, excited state lifetimes, and exclusive cross sections agree well with state-of-the-art theoretical calculations using different approaches. The observation of a short-lived state in 57Ca suggests a transition in the calcium isotopic chain from single-particle dominated states at N=35 to collective excitations at N=37.

Abstract: The nuclear structure of 51Ar, an uncharted territory so far, was studied by the (p,2p) reaction using γ-ray spectroscopy for the bound states and the invariant mass method for the unbound states. Two peaks were detected in the γ-ray spectrum and six peaks were observed in the 50Ar+n relative energy spectrum. Comparing the results to our shell-model calculations, two bound and six unbound states were established. Three of the unbound states could only be placed tentatively due to the low number of counts in the relative energy spectrum of events associated with the decay through the first excited state of 50Ar. The low cross sections populating the two bound states of 51Ar could be interpreted as a clear signature for the presence of significant subshell closures at neutron numbers 32 and 34 in argon isotopes. It was also revealed that due to the two valence holes, unbound collective states coexist with individual-particle states in 51Ar.

Abstract: We report on the first γ-ray spectroscopy of 51,53K produced via the 52,54Ca(p,2p) reactions at ∼250 MeV/nucleon. Unambiguous final-state angular-momentum assignments were achieved for beam intensities down to few particles per second by using a new technique based on reaction vertex tracking combined with a thick liquid-hydrogen target. Through γ-ray spectroscopy and exclusive parallel momentum distribution analysis, 3/2+ ground states and 1/2+ first excited states in 51,53K were established quantifying the natural ordering of the 1d3/2 and 2s1/2 proton-hole states that are restored at N = 32 and 34. State-of-the-art ab initio calculations and shell-model calculations with improved phenomenological effective interactions reproduce the present data and predict consistently the increase of the E(1/21+) - E(3/21+) energy differences towards N = 40. 17. Evaluation of Doppler radar and GTS data assimilation for NWP rainfall prediction of an extreme summer storm in northern China: from the hydrological perspective

Abstract: Data assimilation is an effective tool in improving high-resolution rainfall of the numerical weather prediction (NWP) systems which always fails in providing satisfactory rainfall products for hydrological use. The aim of this study is to explore the potential effects of assimilating different sources of observations, i.e., the Doppler weather radar and the Global Telecommunication System (GTS) data, in improving the mesoscale NWP rainfall products. A 24 h summer storm occurring over the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region of northern China on 21 July 2012 is selected as a case study. The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model is used to obtain 3 km rainfall forecasts, and the observations are assimilated using the three-dimensional variational (3DVar) data assimilation method. Eleven data assimilation modes are designed for assimilating different combinations of observations in the two nested domains of the WRF model. Both the rainfall accumulative amount and its distribution in space and time are examined for the forecasting results with and without data assimilation. The results show that data assimilation can effectively help improve the WRF rainfall forecasts, which is of great importance for hydrologic applications through the rainfall–runoff transformation process. Both the radar reflectivity and the GTS data are good choices for assimilation in improving the rainfall products, whereas special attention should be paid to assimilating radial velocity where unsatisfactory results are always found. The assimilation of the GTS data in the coarser domain has positive effects on the radar data assimilation in the finer domain, which can make the rainfall forecasts more accurate than assimilating the radar data alone. It is also found that the assimilation of more observations cannot guarantee further improvement of the rainfall products, whereas the effective information contained in the assimilated data is of more importance than the data quantity. Potential improvements of data assimilation in improving the NWP rainfall products are discussed and suggestions are further made.

Abstract: The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model is used in this study to simulate six storm events in two semi-humid catchments of northern China. The six storm events are classified into four types based on the rainfall evenness in the spatial and temporal dimensions. Two microphysics, two planetary boundary layers (PBL) and three cumulus parameterizations are combined to develop an ensemble containing 16 members for rainfall generation. The WRF model performs the best for type 1 events with relatively even distributions of rainfall in both space and time. The average relative error (ARE) for the cumulative rainfall amount is 15.82 %. For the spatial rainfall simulation, the lowest root mean square error (RMSE) is found with event II (0.4007), which has the most even spatial distribution, and for the temporal simulation the lowest RMSE is found with event I (1.0218), which has the most even temporal distribution. The most difficult to reproduce are found to be the very convective storms with uneven spatiotemporal distributions (type 4 event), and the average relative error for the cumulative rainfall amounts is up to 66.37 %. The RMSE results of event III, with the most uneven spatial and temporal distribution, are 0.9688 for the spatial simulation and 2.5327 for the temporal simulation, which are much higher than the other storms. The general performance of the current WRF physical parameterizations is discussed. The Betts–Miller–Janjic (BMJ) scheme is found to be unsuitable for rainfall simulation in the study sites. For type 1, 2 and 4 storms, member 4 performs the best. For type 3 storms, members 5 and 7 are the better choice. More guidance is provided for choosing among the physical parameterizations for accurate rainfall simulations of different storm types in the study area.

Abstract: Excited states in the N=40 isotone 62Ti were populated via the 63V(p,2p)62Ti reaction at ∼200 MeV/nucleon at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory and studied using γ-ray spectroscopy. The energies of the 21+→0gs+ and 41+→21+ transitions, observed here for the first time, indicate a deformed 62Ti ground state. These energies are increased compared to the neighboring 64Cr and 66Fe isotones, suggesting a small decrease of quadrupole collectivity. The present measurement is well reproduced by large-scale shell-model calculations based on effective interactions, while ab initio and beyond mean-field calculations do not yet reproduce our findings. The shell-model calculations for 62Ti show a dominant configuration with four neutrons excited across the N=40 gap. Likewise, they indicate that the N=40 island of inversion extends down to Z=20, disfavoring a possible doubly magic character of the elusive 60Ca. Abstract: Engineering background of hydraulic fracturing is applied to improve the permeability of unconventional gas wells, such as coal seams and shale gas wells, by a pulsed discharge mechanism. We studied the general relations between water shock wave properties (the maximum pressure, wave velocity, and energy conversion efficiency), the discharge voltage, and hydrostatic pressure during high-voltage pulsed discharge experiments in pressurized liquid water. The following observations were made: (1) when the discharge voltage increased from 7 kV to 13 kV, the maximum pressure increased from 12.6 MPa (hydrostatic pressure PH = 12 MPa) to 40 MPa (PH = 6 MPa), wave velocity increased from 1418 m/s (PH = 12 MPa) to 1454 m/s (PH = 6 MPa), and energy conversion efficiency increased from 9% to 11%, and (2) when hydrostatic pressure increased from 0 MPa to 12 MPa, the maximum pressure and wave velocity augmented and then diminished slowly (the critical hydrostatic pressure occurs in the 3 to 6 MPa range), whereas the change of energy conversion efficiency was not obvious. Their properties are explained by the variation of electrical parameters during the pulsed discharge.

24. Wood ash amendments as a potential solution to widespread calcium decline in eastern Canadian forests

Abstract: Decades of acidic deposition have depleted soil calcium (Ca) stocks over large areas of eastern Canada. The recovery of soil Ca levels has been limited despite substantial reductions in acidic deposition and will likely take many decades because rates of loss (owing to soil leaching, timber harvesting, and forest regeneration) may equal or exceed those of supply (via atmospheric input and natural mineral weathering). As low soil Ca levels may adversely affect local biota with relatively high Ca requirements, affected sites may benefit from supplementation with an alternative Ca source. A growing body of evidence suggests that the application of wood ash to Ca-deficient forest soils can help counteract the loss of Ca and other nutrients from the soil while boosting forest productivity. Yet the use of wood ash as a forest soil amendment is currently restricted in Canada, and the costs of obtaining permits and transporting/applying the ash make landfilling a more economically viable option. Here, we explore the potential of wood ash amendments in terms of their risks and benefits, dose and application frequency, time to see benefits, and longevity of benefits. After considering these topics in the context of Ca-deficient, acidified forest soils across eastern Canada, we propose that the potential benefits of ash amendments in these areas likely outweigh the risks. Future studies are needed to clarify both the short- and long-term effects of wood ash addition on different tree species in both natural and managed forests, as well as the potential benefits for carbon capture and implications for Ca-deficient aquatic ecosystems.

27. Female Authorship Trends Among Articles About Artificial Intelligence in North American Radiology Journals

Abstract: Purpose: To examine trends in female authorship of peer-reviewed North American radiology articles centred around artificial intelligence (AI). Method: A bibliographic search was conducted for all AI-related articles published in four North American radiology journals. Collected data included the genders of the first and last (senior) authors, year and country. We compared the trends of female authorship using Pearson chi-square, Fisher exact tests and logistic regression models. Results: 453 articles met the inclusion criteria. Among these, 107 (22.3%) had a female first author and 97 (27.3%) had a female senior author. Female first authors were over three times more likely to publish with a female senior author. Among the four journals, the CARJ had the highest proportion of female senior authors at 45.5%. The only significant temporal trend identified was an increase over the years in female senior authors in Radiology. Twenty-four countries contributed to the included articles, with the largest contributors being the United States (n = 290) and Canada (n = 30). Of the countries contributing more than 15 articles, there were none with above 50% female authorship. Conclusions: Female authors are underrepresented in AI-related radiology literature. However, there has been an encouraging recent increase in female authorship in AI-related radiology articles trending towards significance. There is a great opportunity to improve female representation in AI with intentional mentorship and recruitment. We urge more platforms for female voices in radiology as AI becomes increasingly integrated into the radiology community.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: This study compared clinical and hemodynamic in-hospital outcomes of patients undergoing sutureless vs rapid deployment aortic valve replacement (SURD-AVR) in the large population of the Sutureless and Rapid Deployment International Registry (SURD-IR). METHODS: We examined 4695 patients who underwent isolated or combined SURD-AVR. The "sutureless" Perceval valve (LivaNova PLC, London, United Kingdom) was used in 3133 patients and the "rapid deployment" Intuity (Edwards Lifesciences, Irvine, CA) in 1562. Potential confounding factors were addressed by the use of propensity score matching. After matching, 2 well-balanced cohorts of 823 pairs (isolated SURD-AVR) and 467 pairs (combined SURD-AVR) were created. RESULTS: Patients who received Perceval and Intuity valves showed similar in-hospital mortality and rate of major postoperative complications. Perceval was associated shorter cross-clamp and cardiopulmonary bypass times. In the isolated SURD-AVR group, patients receiving Perceval were more likely to undergo anterior right thoracotomy incision. Postoperative transvalvular gradients were significantly lower for the Intuity valve compared with those of the Perceval valve, either in isolated and combined SURD-AVR. The Intuity valve was associated with a lower rate of postoperative mild aortic regurgitation. CONCLUSIONS: Our results confirm the safety and efficacy of SURD-AVR regardless of the valve type. The Perceval valve was associated with reduced operative times and increased anterior right thoracotomy incision. Abstract: Background: Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) has the highest age-adjusted burden of hypertension and cardiovascular disease (CVD). SSA also experiences many viral infections due to unique environmental and societal factors. The purpose of this narrative review is to examine evidence around how hypertension, CVD, and emerging viral infections interact in SSA. Methods: In September 2021, we conducted a search in MEDLINE, Embase, and Scopus, limited to English language studies published since 1990, and found a total of 1169 articles. Forty-seven original studies were included, with 32 on COVID-19 and 15 on other emerging viruses. Results: Seven articles, including those with the largest sample size and most robust study design, found an association between preexisting hypertension or CVD and COVID-19 severity or death. Ten smaller studies found no association, and 17 did not calculate statistics to compare groups. Two studies assessed the impact of COVID-19 on incident CVD, with one finding an increase in stroke admissions. For other emerging viruses, 3 studies did not find an association between preexisting hypertension or CVD on West Nile and Lassa fever mortality. Twelve studies examined other emerging viral infections and incident CVD, with 4 finding no association and 8 not calculating statistics. Conclusions: Growing evidence from COVID-19 suggests viruses, hypertension, and CVD interact on multiple levels in SSA, but research gaps remain especially for other emerging viral infections. SSA can and must play a leading role in the study and control of emerging viral infections, with expansion of research and public health infrastructure to address these interactions.

Abstract: Abstract The rare electromagnetic J/ψ → μ + μ − μ + μ − decay is observed with a significance greatly exceeding the discovery threshold, using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment during 2016–2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb −1. The rate of this decay is measured relative to that of the J/ψ → μ + μ − mode. Using the QED model for the four-muon decay in the efficiency estimation, its branching fraction is determined to be B J / ψ → μ + μ − μ + μ − = 1.13 ± 0.10 ± 0.05 ± 0.01 × 10 − 6 , $$ \mathcal{B}\left(J/\psi \to {\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}{\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}\right)=\left(1.13\pm 0.10\pm 0.05\pm 0.01\right)\times {10}^{-6}, $$ where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and due to the uncertainty on the branching fraction of the J/ψ → μ + μ − decay.

Abstract: Abstract Using pp collision data at s $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV, recorded by the LHCb experiment between 2016 and 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb −1, the forward-backward asymmetry in the pp → Z/γ * → μ + μ − process is measured. The measurement is carried out in ten intervals of the difference between the muon pseudorapidities, within a fiducial region covering dimuon masses between 66 and 116 GeV, muon pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.5 and muon transverse momenta above 20 GeV. These forward-backward asymmetries are compared with predictions, at next-to-leading order in the strong and electroweak couplings. The measured effective leptonic weak mixing angle is sin 2 θ eff ℓ = 0.23147 ± 0.00044 ± 0.00005 ± 0.00023 , $$ {\sin}^2{\theta}_{\textrm{eff}}^{\ell }=0.23147\pm 0.00044\pm 0.00005\pm 0.00023, $$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second arises from systematic uncertainties associated with the asymmetry measurement, and the third arises from uncertainties in the fit model used to extract sin 2 θ eff ℓ $$ {\sin}^2{\theta}_{\textrm{eff}}^{\ell } $$ from the asymmetry measurement. This result is based on an arithmetic average of results using the CT18, MSHT20, and NNPDF31 parameterisations of the proton internal structure, and is consistent with previous measurements and with predictions from the global electroweak fit.

Abstract: Abstract: The radiative decays χc1(3872) → ψ(2S) γ and χc1(3872) → J/ψγ are used to probe the nature of the χc1(3872) state using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb −1. Using the B+ → χc1(3872)K+ decay, the χc1(3872) → ψ(2S) γ process is observed for the first time and the ratio of its partial width to that of the χc1(3872) → J/ψγ decay is measured to be Γ χ c 1 3872 → ψ 2 S γ Γ χ c 1 3872 → J / ψ γ = 1.67 ± 0.21 ± 0.12 ± 0.04 , $$ \frac{\Gamma_{\chi_{c1}(3872)\to \uppsi \left(2\textrm{S}\right)\gamma }}{\Gamma_{\chi_{c1}(3872)\to \textrm{J}/\uppsi \gamma }}=1.67\pm 0.21\pm 0.12\pm 0.04, $$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is due to the uncertainties on the branching fractions of the ψ(2S) and J/ψ mesons. The measured ratio makes the interpretation of the χc1(3872) state as a pure D0 D ¯ ∗ 0 $$ {\overline{\textrm{D}}}^{\ast 0} $$ + D ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{\textrm{D}}}^0 $$ D*0 molecule questionable and strongly indicates a sizeable compact charmonium or tetraquark component within the χc1(3872) state.

36. Abstract P559: Evaluating Geographic Variation in Hypertension in Urban Haiti: Findings From the Haiti Cardiovascular Disease Cohort Study

Abstract: Introduction: Hypertension (HTN) is the leading cardiovascular risk factor in low-income countries including Haiti. Understanding blood pressure (BP) variation at the individual, neighborhood and population levels may help target interventions for multi-level risk reduction. This study aims to identify systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) variation by neighborhood census blocks in Port-au-Prince to determine if this level should be targeted for future HTN interventions. Methods: Using data from the Haiti Cardiovascular Disease Cohort (March 2019-August 2021), a population-based cohort of Haitians ≥ 18 years, HTN was defined as SBP ≥140 mmHg or DBP ≥80 mmHg. Census blocks were defined as geographic areas of approximately 100-200 residential buildings per the Haitian Institute of Statistics. The geographic distribution of SBP and DBP was mapped based on household location. The proportion of SBP and DBP variation in block membership was calculated using intra-class correlations (ICC) from linear mixed models. Results: Among 2,972 participants, median (IQR) age was 40 (28-55) years and 57.6% were female. HTN prevalence was 33.0% and median (IQR) SBP and DBP were 120 (108-140) mmHg and 73.0 (64.0-85.0) mmHg, respectively. No distinct geographic pattern was present for SBP or DBP across blocks (Figure 1). The variation of SBP was 0.7% and DBP was 1.0% across census block membership. Conclusion: HTN prevalence in urban Port-au-Prince is high without a significant variation in SBP and DBP by census block. This may be due to outdated census data, crossover of individuals living informally across households, and/or the need for different household-level neighborhood geographic constructs such as shared household units. Moreover, these data suggest that interventions may need to target the population level, which span neighborhoods, given the uniformity of hypertension across these communities in Port-au-Prince.

Abstract: Introduction: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of mortality in low-income countries (LICs). Neighborhood social vulnerability has been associated with increased CVD risk in high-income countries, but the relationship is unknown in LICs. Our objective was to determine the association between neighborhood social vulnerability and prevalent CVD in urban Haiti. Hypothesis: We hypothesize that adults living in neighborhoods with increased social vulnerability will have a greater prevalence of hypertension (HTN) and CVD. Methods: We used cross-sectional enrollment data from the Haiti CVD Cohort study, a population-based cohort of adults ≥18 years living in Port-au-Prince distributed across 97 census blocks. To quantify vulnerability, we created a Haiti-specific Neighborhood Social Vulnerability Index (NSVI) based on the US CDC Social Vulnerability Index. The NSVI included three socioeconomic variables (income, sex, education), two household variables (single parent household, household with child Results: Among 2932 participants, median age was 40 years (IQR 28-55) and 58% were female. Age-standardized prevalence of HTN and CVD was 32.3% and 13.8%, respectively. The age-standardized prevalence of HTN and CVD was 35.7% and 17.3% across 4 th NSVI quartile blocks, compared to 29.1% and 14.1% across 1 st quartile NSVI blocks (p < 0.001). After adjusting for age, BMI, smoking, and alcohol use, participants living in 4 th NSVI quartile blocks had a greater risk of HTN (Adjusted Odds Ratio (aOR) 1.42; 95% CI 1.07-1.88; p-value 0.01) and CVD (aOR 1.36; CI: 0.99-1.88; p-value 0.06) compared to participants in the 1 st NSVI quartile blocks. NSVI was significantly associated with HTN in males but not females; conversely, NSVI was significantly associated with CVD in females and not males. Conclusions: Individuals living in neighborhoods with the greatest social vulnerability had a higher prevalence of HTN and CVD. Even in a setting of severe poverty such as urban Haiti, gradients in social vulnerabilities are associated with CVD disparities. Screening for social vulnerabilities should be incorporated into CVD prevention and treatment interventions in LICs.

38. Abstract P130: CVD Risk Factors Among Young People in Haiti: Implications for Low-Income Countries

Abstract: Introduction: Over 80% of the global cardiovascular disease (CVD) burden is in low-income countries, including Haiti. Emerging data from these settings indicate CVD risk factors occur earlier in the life-course, but our knowledge of the age of onset and associated factors is limited. This study provides the first population-based estimates of CVD risk factors among young people ages 18-30 years in Haiti. Hypothesis: We hypothesized that elevated blood pressure (pre-hypertension (SBP/DBP >120-140/80-89) or hypertension (SBP/DBP >140/90 or on treatment) is the most common CVD risk factor among young people ages 18-30 years with an estimated prevalence >15%. Methods: This is a cross-sectional analysis within the Haiti CVD Cohort Study, a population-based longitudinal study of adults ≥18 years in Port au Prince. Participants were enrolled between March 2019-April 2021 using multistage random sampling. At enrollment, sociodemographic and health behaviors were assessed coupled with a physical exam and laboratory measures. CVD risk factors included: elevated BP, dyslipidemia (LDL-C ≥100mg/dL), kidney disease (urine albumin creatinine ratio (ACR) or estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)), obesity (BMI > 30kg/m 2 ), and smoking, alcohol use, and physical activity using the WHO STEPS survey. Results: Among 957 participants ages 18-30 years, median age was 24 years (IQR 21-27) and 52% were female. Prevalence of elevated BP was 23% (20% pre-hypertension, 3% hypertension), 34% dyslipidemia, 5% ACR ≥30mg/g, 0.21% eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73, and 7% obese. Other CVD risk factors include: 4% were current smokers, 6% reported any lifetime tobacco use, 19% reported one or more alcoholic drinks per day, and 47% reported low physical activity. Compared to participants ages 18-24 years, those ages 25-30 years had higher odds of pre-hypertension/hypertension (aOR=1.56, 95% CI: 1.13-2.15), but lower odds of dyslipidemia (aOR=0.55, 95% CI: 0.41-0.74). Females had lower odds of pre-hypertension/hypertension (aOR= 0.24, 95% CI: 0.17-0.35) and dyslipidemia (aOR=0.47, 95% CI: 0.35-0.64). Being obese was associated with a higher odds of pre-hypertension/hypertension (aOR=2.21, 95% CI: 1.14-4.16) but lower odds of dyslipidemia (aOR= 0.35, 95%CI: 0.20-0.61) compared to normal weight. Conclusion: These data provide previously unknown population-based estimates of CVD risk factors among young people in a low-income country. Rates of elevated BP and dyslipidemia are alarmingly high and occur prematurely in the life-course in this cohort and are associated with risk of future CVD events and mortality. Despite low prevalence of smoking and drinking alcohol, smoking tobacco was still associated with an increased odds of dyslipidemia. Additional drivers of early-onset CVD risk factors must be identified to guide targeted interventions for primordial and primary prevention as well as treatment.

Abstract: Background: Hypertension (HTN) is the leading cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor in Haiti and is likely driven by poverty-related social and dietary factors. Salt consumption in Haiti is hypothesized to be high but has never been rigorously quantified.Methods: We used spot urine samples from a subset of participants in the population-based Haiti Cardiovascular Disease Cohort to estimate population mean daily sodium intake. We compared three previously validated formulas for estimating dietary sodium intake using urine sodium, urine creatinine, age, sex, height, and weight. We explored the association between dietary sodium intake and blood pressure, stratified by age group.Results: A total of 1,240 participants had spot urine samples. Median age was 38 years (range 18–93), and 48% were female. The mean dietary sodium intake was 3.5–5.0 g/day across the three estimation methods, with 94.2%–97.9% of participants consuming above the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended maximum of 2 g/day of sodium. Among young adults aged 18–29, increasing salt intake from the lowest quartile of consumption (5.88 g/day) was associated with a mean 8.71 mmHg higher systolic blood pressure (SBP) (95% confidence interval: 3.35, 14.07; p = 0.001). Abstract: Background: Cardiovascular disease disproportionately affects persons living in low- and middle-income countries and heart failure (HF) is thought to be a leading cause. Population-based studies characterizing the epidemiology of HF in these settings are lacking. We describe the age-standardized prevalence, survival, subtypes, risk factors, and 1-year mortality of HF in the population-based Haiti Cardiovascular Disease Cohort. Methods: Participants were recruited using multistage cluster-area random sampling in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. A total of 2981 completed standardized history and exam, laboratory measures, and cardiac imaging. Clinical HF was defined by Framingham criteria. Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazard regression assessed mortality among participants with and without HF; logistic regression identified associated factors. Results: Among all participants, the median age was 40 years (interquartile range, 27–55), and 58.2% were female. Median follow-up was 15.4 months (interquartile range, 9–22). The age-standardized HF prevalence was 3.2% (93/2981 [95% CI, 2.6–3.9]). The average age of participants with HF was 57 years (interquartile range, 45–65), and 67.7% were female. The first significant increase in HF prevalence occurred between 30 to 39 and 40 to 49 years (1.1% versus 3.7%, P =0.003). HF with preserved ejection fraction was the most common HF subtype (71.0%). Age (adjusted odds ratio, 1.36 [1.12–1.66] per 10-year increase), hypertension (2.14 [1.26–3.66]), obesity (3.35 [95% CI, 1.99–5.62]), poverty (2.10 [1.18–3.72]), and renal dysfunction (5.42 [2.94–9.98]) were associated with HF. One-year HF mortality was 6.6% versus 0.8% (hazard ratio, 7.7 [95% CI, 2.9–20.6]; P Conclusions: The age-standardized prevalence of HF in this low-income setting was alarmingly high at 3.2%—5-fold higher than modeling estimates for low- and middle-income countries. Adults with HF were two decades younger and 7.7× more likely to die at 1 year compared with those in the community without HF. Further research characterizing the population burden of HF in low- and middle-income countries can guide resource allocation and development of pragmatic HF prevention and treatment interventions, ultimately reducing global cardiovascular disease health disparities. Abstract: Trigonella foenum-graecum L. (fenugreek) is widely used as a leafy vegetable and spice in China and North Africa. Recent studies have reported that fenugreek can reduce fatigue; however, its antifatigue mechanism remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the potential antifatigue effects of fenugreek extract (FE) on mitophagy and the underlying mechanisms.We evaluated the potential effects of FE tablet on an exhaustive exercise-induced fatigue (EEF) rat model. Oxidative stress indicators and fatigue biomarkers in the serum and skeletal muscle were detected. Mitophagy and mitochondrial morphology were observed using transmission electron microscopy. The expression levels of mitochondrial autophagy-related proteins were detected using western blot and immunofluorescence.Compared with the model group, FE enhanced the activities of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase as well as total antioxidant capacity; however, it decreased the level of malondialdehyde in the serum and skeletal muscle after a 7-day treatment. Moreover, certain indicators of mitochondrial function, such as reactive oxygen species levels, ATP levels, cellular and mitochondrial Ca2+ levels, and ATPase activity, were significantly improved in the FE group compared with the model group. Finally, we found that mitophagy was induced by exhaustive exercise and inhibited by FE. Regarding mitochondrial autophagy-related proteins, the expression levels of LC3B, FUNDC1, PGAM5, PARKIN, and PINK1 in the skeletal muscle tissue were increased in the EEF group compared with the control group. After administration of FE and a positive control drug, a significant reversal in the expression of the above-mentioned proteins was noted.Our findings demonstrate that FE exerted antifatigue effects in the EEF rat model by regulating the mitophagy-related FUNDC1/LC3B signaling pathway rather than the PINK1/PARKIN signaling pathway.

50. Comparison of community and clinic-based blood pressure measurements: A cross-sectional study from Haiti

Abstract: Hypertension (HTN) is the leading modifiable cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor in low and middle-income countries, and accurate and accessible blood pressure (BP) measurement is essential for identifying persons at risk. Given the convenience and increased use of community BP screening programs in low-income settings, we compared community and clinic BP measurements for participants in the Haiti CVD Cohort Study to determine the concordance of these two measurements. Participants were recruited using multistage random sampling from March 2019 to August 2021. HTN was defined as systolic BP (SBP) ≥ 140mmHg, diastolic BP (DBP) ≥ 90mmHg or taking antihypertensives according to WHO guidelines. Factors associated with concordance versus discordance of community and clinic BP measurements were assessed with multivariable Poisson regressions. Among 2,123 participants, median age was 41 years and 62% were female. Pearson correlation coefficients for clinic versus community SBP and DBP were 0.78 and 0.77, respectively. Using community BP measurements, 36% of participants screened positive for HTN compared with 30% using clinic BPs. The majority of participants had concordant measurements of normotension (59%) or HTN (26%) across both settings, with 4% having isolated elevated clinic BP (≥140/90 in clinic with normal community BP) and 10% with isolated elevated community BP (≥140/90 in community with normal clinic BP). These results underscore community BP measurements as a feasible and accurate way to increase HTN screening and estimate HTN prevalence for vulnerable populations with barriers to clinic access.
