1. Comparative genomics of Eucalyptus and Corymbia reveals low rates of genome structural rearrangement

Abstract

Abstract Background Previous studies suggest genome structure is largely conserved between Eucalyptus species. However, it is unknown if this conservation extends to more divergent eucalypt taxa. We performed comparative genomics between the eucalypt genera Eucalyptus and Corymbia. Our results will facilitate transfer of genomic information between these important taxa and provide further insights into the rate of structural change in tree genomes. Results We constructed three high density linkage maps for two Corymbia species (Corymbia citriodora subsp. variegata and Corymbia torelliana) which were used to compare genome structure between both species and Eucalyptus grandis. Genome structure was highly conserved between the Corymbia species. However, the comparison of Corymbia and E. grandis suggests large (from 1–13 MB) intra-chromosomal rearrangements have occurred on seven of the 11 chromosomes. Most rearrangements were supported through comparisons of the three independent Corymbia maps to the E. grandis genome sequence, and to other independently constructed Eucalyptus linkage maps. Conclusions These are the first large scale chromosomal rearrangements discovered between eucalypts. Nonetheless, in the general context of plants, the genomic structure of the two genera was remarkably conserved; adding to a growing body of evidence that conservation of genome structure is common amongst woody angiosperms.

Abstract

Scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) transforms a grayscale image into scale-invariant coordinates of local features that are invariant to image scale, rotation, and changing viewpoints. Because of its scale-invariant properties, SIFT has been successfully used for object recognition and content-based image retrieval. The biggest drawback of SIFT is that it uses only grayscale information and misses important visual information regarding color. In this paper, we present the development of a novel color feature extraction algorithm that addresses this problem, and we also propose a new clustering strategy using clustering ensembles for video shot detection. Based on Fibonacci lattice-quantization, we develop a novel color global scale-invariant feature transform (CGSIFT) for better description of color contents in video frames for video shot detection. CGSIFT first quantizes a color image, representing it with a small number of color indices, and then uses SIFT to extract features from the quantized color index image. We also develop a new space description method using small image regions to represent global color features as the second step of CGSIFT. Clustering ensembles focusing on knowledge reuse are then applied to obtain better clustering results than using single clustering methods for video shot detection. Evaluation of the proposed feature extraction algorithm and the new clustering strategy using clustering ensembles reveals very promising results for video shot detection.

Abstract

We report an analysis of the planetary microlensing event OGLE-2018-BLG-1185, which was observed by a large number of ground-based telescopes and by the Spitzer Space Telescope. The ground-based light curve indicates a low planet–host star mass ratio ofq=(6.9±0.2)×10−5, which is near the peak of the wide-orbit exoplanet mass-ratio distribution. We estimate the host star and planet masses with a Bayesian analysis using the measured angular Einstein radius under the assumption that stars of all masses have an equal probability of hosting the planet. The flux variation observed by Spitzer is marginal, but still places a constraint on the microlens parallax. Imposing a conservative constraint that this flux variation should beΔfSpz<4 instrumental flux units yields a host mass of=-+MM0.37 host 0.210.35 and a planet mass of =-+ÅmM8.4p4.77.9. A Bayesian analysis including the full parallax constraint from Spitzer suggests smaller host star and planet masses of =-+MM0.091 host 0.0180.064 and =-+ÅmM2.1p0.41.5, respectively. Future high-resolution imaging observations with the Hubble Space Telescope or Extremely Large Telescope could distinguish between these two scenarios and help reveal the planetary system properties in more detail.

Abstract

We report two microlensing planet candidates discovered by the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) survey in 2017. However, both events have the 2L1S/1L2S degeneracy, which is an obstacle to claiming the discovery of the planets with certainty unless the degeneracy can be resolved. For KMT-2017-BLG-0962, the degeneracy cannot be resolved. If the 2L1S solution is correct, KMT-2017-BLG-0962 might be produced by a super Jupiter-mass planet orbiting a mid-M-dwarf host star. For KMT-2017-BLG-1119, the light-curve modeling favors the 2L1S solution but higher-resolution observations of the baseline object tend to support the 1L2S interpretation rather than the planetary interpretation. This degeneracy might be resolved by a future measurement of the lens-source relative proper motion. This study shows that the problem of resolving 2L1S/1L2S degeneracy exists over a much wider range of conditions than those considered by the theoretical study of Gaudi (1998).

Abstract

We report the discovery of a sub-Jupiter-mass planet orbiting beyond the snow line of an M dwarf most likely in the Galactic disk as part of the joint Spitzer and ground-based monitoring of planetary microlensing anomalies toward the Galactic bulge. Most of the microlensing parameters are strongly constrained by the light-curve modeling, and in particular there is a Spitzer-based measurement of the microlens parallax, π(E). However, there are no caustic crossings, so the angular Einstein radius has only an upper limit based on the light-curve modeling alone. Additionally, the analysis leads us to identify eight degenerate configurations: the fourfold microlensing parallax degeneracy being doubled by a degeneracy in the caustic structure present at the level of the ground-based solutions. To calculate the physical parameters, and at the same time to break the parallax degeneracy, we make use of a series of arguments: the χ(exp 2) hierarchy, the Rich argument (stating that the small-parallax solution is more likely), and a prior Galactic model. The preferred configuration, favored by a likelihood ratio of at least 4000, is for a host at D(L)={3.73}(-0.67+0.66)kpc with mass M(L)=0.30(-0.12+0.15) M(☉) , orbited by a Saturn-like planet with M(planet) =0.43(-0.17+0.21) M(Jup) at projected separation a(⊥) =1.70(-0.39+0.38) au, about 2.1 times beyond the system snow line. Therefore, it adds to the growing population of sub-Jupiter planets orbiting beyond the snow line of M dwarfs discovered by microlensing. Based on the rules of the real-time protocol for the selection of events to be followed up with Spitzer, this planet will not enter the sample for measuring the Galactic distribution of planets.

Abstract

An anomalous series of cases has held that the tort of direct disability discrimination is not made out where the plaintiff cannot compare her circumstances with those of a person who is not disabled. There are situations, however, where comparison of this sort is necessary in order to ascertain whether the treatment complained of was caused by the plaintiff’s disability. In these cases, relief has been denied where it may ought to have been granted, and at a doctrinal and theoretical level the law is in an unsatisfactory state. The legislative text in question, however, admits of an ambiguity, and recourse can be made to its objects and purposes – and if necessary the constitutional guarantee of equality – to construe the provisions so that ‘inter-disability discrimination’ as it has been called is prohibited, not permitted.

Abstract

Perhaps two of the less anticipated aspects of the National Security Law (NSL) were its commitments to respect human rights and the rule of law in the safeguarding of national security, and the Court of First Instance has now held that the NSL is to be construed in accordance with fundamental rights guarantees in the constitution, so far as is reasonably possible. Against this backdrop, the Chief Executive and National Security Committee have promulgated Implementation Rules for article 43 of the NSL, Schedule 3 of which provides police officers with powers to freeze, restrain, charge, confiscate and forfeit property, when handling national security cases. This article identifies four ways in which Schedule 3 may be ineffective for operating ultra vires its empowering provision, article 43 of the NSL. It goes on to suggest that primary legislation could have achieved the means sought to be achieved by the four provisions in question, notwithstanding what may be the Administration’s view to the contrary.

Abstract

We reexamine high-magnification microlensing events in the previous data collected by the KMTNet survey with the aim of finding planetary signals that were not noticed before. In this work, we report the planetary system KMT-2018-BLG-1988L that was found from this investigation. The planetary signal appears as a deviation with $\lesssim 0.2$~mag from a single-lens light curve and lasted for about 6 hours. The deviation exhibits a pattern of a dip surrounded by weak bumps on both sides of the dip. The analysis of the lensing light curve indicates that the signal is produced by a low mass-ratio ($q\sim 4\times 10^{-5}$) planetary companion located near the Einstein ring of the host star. The mass of the planet, $M_{\rm planet}=6.8^{+4.7}_{-3.5}~M_\oplus$ and $5.6^{+3.8}_{-2.8}~M_\oplus$ for the two possible solutions, estimated from the Bayesian analysis indicates that the planet is in the regime of a super-Earth. The host of the planet is a disk star with a mass of $M_{\rm host} = 0.47^{+0.33}_{-0.25}~M_\odot$ and a distance of $D_{\rm L}= 4.2^{+1.8}_{-.14}$~kpc. KMT-2018-BLG-1988Lb is the seventeenth microlensing planet with a mass below the upper limit of a super-Earth. The fact that 14 out of 17 microlensing planets with masses $\lesssim 10~M_\oplus$ were detected during the last 5 years since the full operation of the KMTNet survey indicates that the KMTNet database is an important reservoir of very low-mass planets., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

This article questions the received orthodoxy from England and Wales that unincorporated treaties are ineffective (or not self-executing) on the domestic plane, and that municipal courts are incompetent to adjudicate the rights and liabilities arising from them. Anomalous gaps in protection have arisen from the application of this orthodoxy in the human rights context in Hong Kong. A close analysis, however, shows the orthodox positions in both Hong Kong and England and Wales to have been overstated, and there is room and good constitutional reason for an estoppel to be imposed against the executive in human rights cases, resulting, effectively, in the direct application of unincorporated human rights norms.

Abstract

Introduction: Active learning is a useful tool to enhance student engagement and support learning in diverse educational situations. We aimed to assess the efficacy of an active learning approach within a large interprofessional first year Medical Cell Biology module taken by six healthcare programmes across the School of Biomedical Sciences at Ulster University, United Kingdom.Materials and methods: An active learning approach was developed for weekly formative assessment using Smartwork to design a weekly interactive multiple-choice quiz to reinforce key concepts specifically for each lecture. We tracked and assessed student performance in the module overall and in each element of course work and exam for 2 years prior to and following the introduction of an active learning strategy to engage and support learning for students from all academic backgrounds and abilities.Results: Full engagement with active learning was significantly associated with an increased overall module performance as well as a significantly increased performance in each element of class test (No engagement vs. Full engagement, p < 0.001), exam (No Engagement vs. Full engagement, p < 0.05) and coursework (No engagement vs. Full engagement, p < 0.001) within this overall total (No Engagement vs. Full engagement, p < 0.01). Partial engagement with active learning was associated significantly improved class test (No engagement vs. partially engaged, p < 0.001) and coursework (No engagement vs. partially engaged, p < 0.05) performance. While a trend toward increased performance in exam and overall module mark was observed, these were not significant.Discussion: Active learning is a useful tool to support student learning across a range of healthcare programmes taken by students with differing backgrounds and academic abilities in an interprofessional and widening participation setting. Student engagement in active learning was highlighted as a key contributory factor to enhanced student performance in all aspects of assessment.

Abstract

This chapter introduces some fundamental bubble dynamics in liquid media. Understanding bubble dynamics is critical for bubble column design since the hydrodynamic behaviors are induced and dictated by the gas phase in the form of bubbles. Complex hydrodynamic behavior in bubble columns is closely related to the characteristics of rising bubbles and bubble wake structures. The interaction between a rising bubble and the surrounding liquid medium produces the bubble shape and determines the extent of the disturbance in the surrounding flow field. In gas-liquid contacting systems, the velocity distribution in the wake region controls the diffusion/dispersion of gas from bubbles into liquid media. For gas-liquid systems, the experimental results available in the literature indicate that an increase of pressure retards the bubble coalescence. In bubble column reactors, the hydrodynamics, transport, and mixing properties, such as pressure drop, holdup of various phases, gas-liquid interfacial areas, and mass and heat transfers, depend strongly on the prevailing flow regime.

Abstract

We report the discovery of a $Spitzer$ microlensing planet OGLE-2018-BLG-0596Lb, with preferred planet-host mass ratio $q \sim 2\times10^{-4}$. The planetary signal, which is characterized by a short $(\sim 1~{\rm day})$ "bump" on the rising side of the lensing light curve, was densely covered by ground-based surveys. We find that the signal can be explained by a bright source that fully envelops the planetary caustic, i.e., a "Hollywood" geometry. Combined with the source proper motion measured from $Gaia$, the $Spitzer$ satellite parallax measurement makes it possible to precisely constrain the lens physical parameters. The preferred solution, in which the planet perturbs the minor image due to lensing by the host, yields a Uranus-mass planet with a mass of $M_{\rm p} = 13.9\pm1.6~M_{\oplus}$ orbiting a mid M-dwarf with a mass of $M_{\rm h} = 0.23\pm0.03~M_{\odot}$. There is also a second possible solution that is substantially disfavored but cannot be ruled out, for which the planet perturbs the major image. The latter solution yields $M_{\rm p} = 1.2\pm0.2~M_{\oplus}$ and $M_{\rm h} = 0.15\pm0.02~M_{\odot}$. By combining the microlensing and $Gaia$ data together with a Galactic model, we find in either case that the lens lies on the near side of the Galactic bulge at a distance $D_{\rm L} \sim 6\pm1~{\rm kpc}$. Abstract

We report the discovery of a sub-Jupiter mass planet orbiting beyond the snow line of an M-dwarf most likely in the Galactic disk as part of the joint Spitzer and ground-based monitoring of microlensing planetary anomalies toward the Galactic bulge. The microlensing parameters are strongly constrained by the light curve modeling and in particular by the Spitzer-based measurement of the microlens parallax, $\pi_\mathrm{E}$. However, in contrast to many planetary microlensing events, there are no caustic crossings, so the angular Einstein radius, $\theta_\mathrm{E}$ has only an upper limit based on the light curve modeling alone. Additionally, the analysis leads us to identify 8 degenerate configurations: the four-fold microlensing parallax degeneracy being doubled by a degeneracy in the caustic structure present at the level of the ground-based solutions. To pinpoint the physical parameters, and at the same time to break the parallax degeneracy, we make use of a series of arguments: the $\chi^2$ hierarchy, the Rich argument, and a prior Galactic model. The preferred configuration is for a host at $D_L=3.73_{-0.67}^{+0.66}~\mathrm{kpc}$ with mass $M_\mathrm{L}=0.30_{-0.12}^{+0.15}~\mathrm{M_\odot}$, orbited by a Saturn-like planet with $M_\mathrm{planet}=0.43_{-0.17}^{+0.21}~\mathrm{M_\mathrm{Jup}}$ at projected separation $a_\perp = 1.70_{-0.39}^{+0.38}~\mathrm{au}$, about 2.1 times beyond the system snow line. Therefore, it adds to the growing population of sub-Jupiter planets orbiting near or beyond the snow line of M-dwarfs discovered by microlensing. Based on the rules of the real-time protocol for the selection of events to be followed up with Spitzer, this planet will not enter the sample for measuring the Galactic distribution of planets., Comment: Submitted to AAS Journals

Abstract

We analyze the gravitational binary-lensing event OGLE-2016-BLG-0156, for which the lensing light curve displays pronounced deviations induced by microlens-parallax effects. The light curve exhibits 3 distinctive widely-separated peaks and we find that the multiple-peak feature provides a very tight constraint on the microlens-parallax effect, enabling us to precisely measure the microlens parallax $\pi_{\rm E}$. All the peaks are densely and continuously covered from high-cadence survey observations using globally located telescopes and the analysis of the peaks leads to the precise measurement of the angular Einstein radius $\theta_{\rm E}$. From the combination of the measured $\pi_{\rm E}$ and $\theta_{\rm E}$, we determine the physical parameters of the lens. It is found that the lens is a binary composed of two M dwarfs with masses $M_1=0.18\pm 0.01\ M_\odot$ and $M_2=0.16\pm 0.01\ M_\odot$ located at a distance $D_{\rm L}= 1.35\pm 0.09\ {\rm kpc}$. According to the estimated lens mass and distance, the flux from the lens comprises an important fraction, $\sim 25\%$, of the blended flux. The bright nature of the lens combined with the high relative lens-source motion, $\mu=6.94\pm 0.50\ {\rm mas}\ {\rm yr}^{-1}$, suggests that the lens can be directly observed from future high-resolution follow-up observations., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

28. PSIII-42 Effects of non-genetically modified organism wheat on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, blood profile and meat quality in grower-finisher pigs

Abstract

With the continuous development of animal husbandry, alternative low cost and safety feed ingredient such as non-genetically modified organism wheat (non-GMO) is being researched as a source of energy as well as other nutrients to replace certain amount of corn in the diet. This study was conducted to determine the effects of dietary non-GMO wheat-based diets on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, fecal score, blood profile and meat quality of grower-finisher pigs. A total of 70 [(Landrace × Yorkshire) × Duroc] growing pigs with an initial body weight of 26.15 ± 1.57 kg were used in a 112 days study. Dietary treatments were as follows: (I) CD, corn-based diet；(II) non-GMO WD, non-genetically modified organism wheat-based diet (completely wheat based diet). Each treatment consisted of 7 replicate pens with 5 pigs per pen. All data were statistically analyzed using the GLM procedure of the SAS program (SAS Inst. Inc., Cary, NC, USA). In the current study, pigs fed corn-based diet had higher body weight than pigs fed non-GMO wheat-based diet atday 21（38.93 kg，38.32 kg，respectively，p=0.042） and day77(81.54 kg，49.54 kg，respectively，p=0.036). There was a significant difference in average daily gain (ADG) during 0-21days(608 kg，580 kg，respectively，p=0.047), but there was no difference in overall ADG. In addition, non-GMO wheat-based diet were no effects on protein, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, and glucose except for BUN at day 21 on blood profile. In conclusion, non-GMO wheat-based diet had no significant impact on the growth performance, nutrient digestibility, blood profile and meat quality of pigs during the grower-finisher period. Non-GMO wheat-based diet appears to be aviable possible alternative to basal diet in Grower-Finisher pigs.

Abstract

A four-channel collective scattering system (CSS) has been developed to extend the current turbulence measurement capability (poloidal wavenumber < 3 cm−1) beyond the ion gyroscale in the KSTAR tokamak. By utilizing a 300 GHz probe beam and four-channel detector array, the CSS can measure electron density fluctuations of four distinct poloidal wavenumbers from 14 to 26 cm−1 at a high sampling rate (typically 10 MS s−1). In between discharges the radial measurement location can be varied from the plasma center to the outer edge with the remote control of the optical system. In this paper, the details of the major components and laboratory evaluation of the optical system are described. Several initial measurements such as (1) the broadband turbulence reduction during L–H transition, (2) the broadband turbulence increase in H-mode when the amplitude of edge-localized mode crashes is reduced by increased density, (3) the amplification of a quasi-coherent mode by additional heating in high-performance H-mode, and (4) the appearance of high-frequency magnetohydro-dynamical modes during slow L–H transition, are briefly presented. The possibility of the CSS as a hybrid system (of a scattering system and fluctuation interferometer), which complicates the interpretation of the CSS data, is also discussed.

Abstract

We investigated the effect of the chemical doping on the visible emission of the Cu-ion-doped perovskite zirconates. We synthesized the Cu-ion-doped Sr1−x Ca x ZrO3 (SCZO:Cu) compounds (x = 0 − 1), where the structural distortion and the chemical disorder were tuned due to the ionic size difference between Sr2+ and Ca2+. The nominal doping concentration of Cu ion was chosen to be 1%. We found that the visible emission in SCZO:Cu was suppressed dramatically with the substitution of Ca2+ for Sr2+ (x > 0). The violet emission was more susceptible to the structural distortion than the orange and the green emissions. These experimental findings were discussed in relation to the electronic properties of SCZO:Cu.

Abstract

Objective:To determine if there is gender or laterality predilection in patients with semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome.Methods:A multi-institutional chart review was performed to identify patients diagnosed with semicircular canal dehiscence between 2000 and 2015. A systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed to further identify patients with semicircular canal dehiscence. Age, gender and laterality data were collected. Statistical analysis was performed to evaluate for gender or laterality preponderance.Results:A total of 682 patients with semicircular canal dehiscence were identified by literature and chart review. Mean age of diagnosis was 49.75 years (standard deviation = 15.33). Semicircular canal dehiscence was associated with a statistically significant female predominance (chi-square = 7.185, p = 0.007); the female-to-male ratio was 1.2 to 1. Left-sided semicircular canal dehiscence was most common, followed by right-sided then bilateral (chi-square = 23.457, p < 0.001).Conclusion:Semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome is most commonly left-sided and exhibits a female predominance. This may be secondary to morphological cerebral hemisphere asymmetries in both sexes and a predilection of women to seek more medical care than men.

Abstract

We present the analysis of a very high-magnification ($A\sim 900$) microlensing event KMT-2019-BLG-1953. A single-lens single-source (1L1S) model appears to approximately delineate the observed light curve, but the residuals from the model exhibit small but obvious deviations in the peak region. A binary lens (2L1S) model with a mass ratio $q\sim 2\times 10^{-3}$ improves the fits by $\Delta\chi^2=181.8$, indicating that the lens possesses a planetary companion. From additional modeling by introducing an extra planetary lens component (3L1S model) and an extra source companion (2L2S model), it is found that the residuals from the 2L1S model further diminish, but claiming these interpretations is difficult due to the weak signals with $\Delta\chi^2=16.0$ and $13.5$ for the 3L1S and 2L2L models, respectively. From a Bayesian analysis, we estimate that the host of the planets has a mass of $M_{\rm host}=0.31^{+0.37}_{-0.17}~M_\odot$ and that the planetary system is located at a distance of $D_{\rm L}=7.04^{+1.10}_{-1.33}~{\rm kpc}$ toward the Galactic center. The mass of the securely detected planet is $M_{\rm p}=0.64^{+0.76}_{-0.35}~M_{\rm J}$. The signal of the potential second planet could have been confirmed if the peak of the light curve had been more densely observed by followup observations, and thus the event illustrates the need for intensive followup observations for very high-magnification events even in the current generation of high-cadence surveys., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

Mass measurements of gravitational microlenses require one to determine the microlens parallax $\pie$, but precise $\pie$ measurement, in many cases, is hampered due to the subtlety of the microlens-parallax signal combined with the difficulty of distinguishing the signal from those induced by other higher-order effects. In this work, we present the analysis of the binary-lens event OGLE-2017-BLG-0329, for which $\pie$ is measured with a dramatically improved precision using additional data from space-based $Spitzer$ observations. We find that while the parallax model based on the ground-based data cannot be distinguished from a zero-$\pie$ model at 2$\sigma$ level, the addition of the $Spitzer$ data enables us to identify 2 classes of solutions, each composed of a pair of solutions according to the well-known ecliptic degeneracy. It is found that the space-based data reduce the measurement uncertainties of the north and east components of the microlens-parallax vector $\pivec_{\rm E}$ by factors $\sim 18$ and $\sim 4$, respectively. With the measured microlens parallax combined with the angular Einstein radius measured from the resolved caustic crossings, we find that the lens is composed of a binary with components masses of either $(M_1,M_2)\sim (1.1,0.8)\ M_\odot$ or $\sim (0.4,0.3)\ M_\odot$ according to the two solution classes. The first solution is significantly favored but the second cannot be securely ruled out based on the microlensing data alone. However, the degeneracy can be resolved from adaptive optics observations taken $\sim 10$ years after the event., Comment: 9 pages, 4 tables, 6 figures

Abstract

Organo-metal halide perovskites have revolutionized thin film photovoltaics by their outstanding performance improvements over the last years. Modifying the active layer by thermal nano-imprint lithography enables a great opportunity to modify and further enhance the optical properties. During the imprint, the perovskite layer changes tremendously. Crystal sizes and structure can be controlled by different molds, pressure and heat. Most importantly, the ability to transfer two-dimensional photonic structures inside the active layer enables enhanced photon absorption in the weakly absorbing wavelength region of thin perovskites.

Abstract

We present Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) light curves for microlensing-event candidates in the Kepler K2 C9 field having peaks within 3 effective timescales of the Kepler observations. These include 181 "clear microlensing" and 84 "possible microlensing" events found by the KMTNet event finder, plus 56 other events found by OGLE and/or MOA that were not found by KMTNet. Abstract

We report two microlensing events, KMT-2017-BLG-1038 and KMT-2017-BLG-1146 that are caused by planetary systems. These events were discovered by KMTNet survey observations from the $2017$ bulge season. The discovered systems consist of a planet and host star with mass ratios, $5.3_{-0.4}^{+0.2} \times 10^{-3}$ and $2.0_{-0.1}^{+0.6} \times 10^{-3}$, respectively. Based on a Bayesian analysis assuming a Galactic model without stellar remnant hosts, we find that the planet, KMT-2017-BLG-1038Lb, is a super Jupiter-mass planet ($M_{\rm p}= 2.04_{-1.15}^{+2.02}\,M_{\rm J}$) orbiting a mid-M dwarf host ($M_{\rm h}= 0.37_{-0.20}^{+0.36}\, M_{\odot}$) that is located at $6.01_{-1.72}^{+1.27}$ kpc toward the Galactic bulge. The other planet, KMT-2017-BLG-1146Lb, is a sub Jupiter-mass planet ($M_{\rm p}= 0.71_{-0.42}^{+0.80}\,M_{\rm J}$) orbiting a mid-M dwarf host ($M_{\rm h}= 0.33_{-0.20}^{+0.36}\,M_{\odot}$) at a distance toward the Galactic bulge of $6.50_{-2.00}^{+1.38}$ kpc. Both are potentially gaseous planets that are beyond their hosts' snow lines. Abstract

The aim of the current work is to study the effect of friction welding parameters such as joint design and rotational speed on the microstructure and mechanical properties of ST37 steel to CK60 steel joints. The tensile strength of the joints was determined using notch tensile tests. The hardness was measured across and perpendicular to the interface. Weld toughness was measured using Charpy impact tests. The results of notch tensile tests indicate that the strength of the weld zone is between those of the two components. The toughness of the weld zone was lower than both base materials. The fracture surface showed cleavage features. The round head samples had better results than for the flat ones.

Abstract

In this Letter, a method for the broadband measurement of complex permittivity using a quasi‐optical technique is presented. After calibration of the quasi‐optical system, the material under test is inserted into the system and S‐parameters are measured from 220 to 330 GHz using a vector network analyser. An extraction method is then applied to calculate the complex permittivity. The permittivity measurements are validated by comparing with a well‐established extraction method and the comparison shows good agreement.

Abstract

The transverse momentum spectra of weak vector bosons are measured in the CMS experiment at the LHC. The measurement uses a sample of proton-proton collisions at root s = 8TeV, collected during a special low-luminosity running that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 18: 4 +/- 0: 5 pb(-1). The production of W bosons is studied in both electron and muon decay modes, while the production of Z bosons is studied using only the dimuon decay channel. The ratios of W- to W+ and Z to W di ff erential cross sections are also measured. The measured di ff erential cross sections and ratios are compared with theoretical predictions up to next-to-next leading order in QCD.

Abstract

Current microlensing surveys are sensitive to free-floating planets down to Earth-mass objects. All published microlensing events attributed to unbound planets were identified based on their short timescale (below two days), but lacked an angular Einstein radius measurement (and hence lacked a significant constraint on the lens mass). Here, we present the discovery of a Neptune-mass free-floating planet candidate in the ultrashort ($t_{\rm E}=0.320\pm0.003$ days) microlensing event OGLE-2016-BLG-1540. The event exhibited strong finite-source effects, which allowed us to measure its angular Einstein radius of $\theta_{\rm E}=9.2\pm0.5\,\mu$as. There remains, however, a degeneracy between the lens mass and distance. The combination of the source proper motion and source-lens relative proper motion measurements favors a Neptune-mass lens located in the Galactic disk. However, we cannot rule out that the lens is a Saturn-mass object belonging to the bulge population. We exclude stellar companions up to 15 au., Comment: accepted to AJ

Abstract

A measurement of the top quark pair production () cross section in proton-proton collisions at the centre-of-mass energy of 8 is presented using data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.6. This analysis is performed in the decay channels with one isolated, high transverse momentum electron or muon and at least four jets, at least one of which is required to be identified as originating from hadronization of a b quark. The calibration of the jet energy scale and the efficiency of b jet identification are determined from data. The measured cross section is . This measurement is compared with an analysis of 7 data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0, to determine the ratio of 8 to 7 cross sections, which is found to be . The measurements are in agreement with QCD predictions up to next-to-next-to-leading order.
