Abstract

Many modern and future particle accelerators employ high gradient superconducting RF (SRF) to generate beams of high energy, high intensity and high brightness for research in high energy and nuclear physics, basic energy sciences, etc. In this paper we report the record performance large-scale SRF system with average beam accelerating gradient matching the International Linear Collider (ILC) specification of 31.5 MV m ^−1 . Design of the eight cavity 1.3 GHz SRF cryomodule, its performance without the beam and results of the system commissioning with high intensity electron beam at Fermilab Accelerator Science and Technology (FAST) facility are presented. We also briefly discuss opportunities for further beam studies and tests at FAST including those on even higher gradient and more efficient SRF acceleration, as well as exploration of the system performance with full ILC-type beam specifications.

Abstract

It is generally accepted that longitudinal stochastic cooling of bunched beams is not possible without a synchrotron frequency spread. Experiments in the Fermilab Recycler storage ring demonstrate the opposite: with an antiproton bunch in a parabolic potential well (no synchrotron frequency spread), the cooling was almost as efficient as in a trapezoidal potential well (with a relative synchrotron frequency spread of ∼100%). A possible explanation is that, at Recycler parameters, diffusion processes are sufficient to provide particle mixing.

Abstract

The aging properties of a wire chamber, operating in a methane/TMAE gas mixture, were studied in a beam test. We emphasize here the precautions taken to minimize aging due to materials used in the chamber, and the redundancy in the design of the test. We compare our aging results to those recorded in the literature and find good agreement in the overall aging properties as a function of dose. We also report the results of increasing the high voltage of the aged chamber to restore the gain.

Abstract

Inclusive differential cross sections dsigma(pA)/dx(F) and dsigma(pA)/dp(t)(2) for the production of K-S(0), Lambda, and (U) over bar particles are measured at HERA in proton-induced reactions on C, Al, Ti, and W targets. The incident beam energy is 920 GeV, corresponding to roots = 41.6 GeV in the proton-nucleon system. The ratios of differential cross sections dsigma(pA)(K-S(0))/dsigma(pA)(Lambda) and dsigma(pA)((U) over bar)/dsigma(pA) (Lambda) are measured to be 6.2 +/- 0.5 and 0.66 +/- 0.07, respectively, for x(F) approximate to -0.06. No significant dependence upon the target material is observed. Within errors, the slopes of the transverse momentum distributions da,Ald t also show no significant dependence upon the target material. The dependence of the extrapolated total cross sections sigma(pA) on the atomic mass A of the target material is discussed, and the deduced cross sections per nucleon sigma(pN) are compared with results obtained at other energies.

Abstract

Using data collected by the HERA-B experiment, we have measured the fraction of J\psi's produced via radiative chi_c decays in interactions of 920 GeV protons with carbon and titanium targets. We obtained R_{\chi_c} = 0.32 \pm 0.06_{stat} \pm 0.04_{sys} for the fraction of J\psi from chi_c decays averaged over proton-carbon and proton-titanium collisions. This result is in agreement with previous measurements and is compared with theoretical predictions., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figs

Abstract

Using the HERA-B detector, the b-bbar production cross section has been measured in 920 GeV proton collisions on carbon and titanium targets. The b-bbar production was tagged via inclusive bottom quark decays into J/psi, by exploiting the longitudinal separation of J/psi->ll decay vertices from the primary proton-nucleus interaction. Both $e^+e^-$ and $\mu^+\mu^-$ channels have been reconstructed and the combined analysis yields the cross section $\sigma(b \bar b) = 32 ^{+14}_{-12} (stat) ^{+6}_{-7} (sys) nb/nucleon$., Comment: 22 pages, 10 Postscript figures

Abstract

The performance of the ring imaging Cherenkov counter (RICH) for the HERA-B experiment has been evaluated. The measured values of the basic parameters such as the number of detected photons per ring and Cherenkov angle resolution are found to agree with a priori estimates. Also at higher track densities, the detector is capable of identifying individual rings. Particle identification has been achieved by determining the momentum from tracks in the vertex detector and main tracking system, hits in the electromagnetic calorimeter and track directions as measured by the RICH.

Abstract

We report on aging measurements of a photon detector candidate, based on proportional wire chambers operating in TMAE, for the HERA-B RICH. The detector consisted of 64 cells, each 100 mm long and 8×8 mm 2 in area, constructed with brass cathode and 45 μm gold plated tungsten anode wire and was operated at room temperature with 50% TMAE saturated methane. To age the chamber it was exposed for several weeks to UV light from a deuterium lamp at 3 MHz/cm 2 counting rate, the expected maximum rate in the HERA-B RICH. The detection efficiency of the chamber for Cherenkov photons, generated in 5 m of argon by a 3 GeV electron testbeam at DESY, was recorded at regular intervals during the aging process. The pulse-height distribution of the chamber was continuously monitored. We found significant chamber gain loss after an exposure equivalent to about one month of running at HERA-B. Based on our results HERA-B decided to employ a multi-anode PMT system as photon detector in the RICH.

Abstract

A new multianode photomultiplier tube, type H6568 manufactured by Hamamatsu company, has been tested in view of using it for measuring Cherenkov rings in the HERA-B experiment. The results of measurements of single-photoelectron pulse-height distributions, uniformity of response, cross-talk, photon detection efficiency, rate dependence of the gain and ageing will be presented and discussed. In addition, the response of the PMT to scintillations of perfluorobutane (C 4 F 10 ), argon and air has been measured.

Abstract

Results of tests of different position-sensitive photon detectors for the HERA-B RICH are given. It is observed, that the CsI-MWPC cannot be routinely produced and maintained with sufficiently high quantum efficiency and that the TMAE detector loses anode wire gain too quickly. The third candidate, the H-6568 Hamamatsu multianode PMT, seems to meet all the requirements necessary for photon detection in the HERA-B RICH.

Abstract

We report the first observation of the (radiative) decay Jψ→e+e−γ. Our data are from an experiment in which Jψ is formed in antiproton-proton annihilations. The observed rate is consistent with a QED calculation based on final state radiation. Our measurement gives a branching ratio for this mode of (8.8±1.3±0.4)×10−3 for γ energy>100 MeV.

Abstract

We report on a study of the angular distribution in the reaction $\overline{p}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\frac{J}{\ensuremath{\psi}}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$. Using a sample of 1904 events, we find that the contribution of helicity zero in the formation process is ${B}_{0}^{2}l0.22$ (90% C.L.), and that the normalized quadrupole amplitude in the radiative decay is ${a}_{2}=\ensuremath{-}0.14\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06$. The normalized radiative decay octupole amplitude ${a}_{3}$ is found to be consistent with zero.

We present measurements of the 2π0 mass spectrum in proton—antiproton annihilations. The f2 (1520) resonance is strongly produced in the 3π0 channel. Its production along with an η is observed, but strongly suppressed. Other features are seen in the data, including the f2 (1270) and structures at 2000 MeV/c2 and above.

Abstract

The E760 Collaboration has studied the reaction [ital [bar p]p][r arrow][chi][sub 2][r arrow][gamma][gamma] using a hydrogen gas jet target in the Fermilab antiproton acumulator ring. The following values are obtained for the branching ratio and partial width to two photons; [ital B]([chi][sub 2][r arrow][gamma][gamma])=(1.60[plus minus]0.45)[times]10[sup [minus]4] and [Gamma]([chi][sub 2][r arrow][gamma][gamma])=321[plus minus]95 eV.

Abstract

We report new measurements for the mass, width, and branching ratios for the [ital J]/[psi] and the [psi][prime]. These charmonium states are formed exclusively in [ital [bar p]p] annihilations at the Fermilab Antiproton Accumulator ring, where stochastically cooled antiprotons are brought into collision with the protons of an in- ternal hydrogen gas jet target. The antiproton energy is precisely controlled and measured allowing an accurate measurement of the resonance parameters. From the shape of the excitation curves we find that the widths of [ital J]/[psi] and [psi][prime] are [Gamma]([ital J]/[psi])=99[plus minus]12[plus minus]6 keV and [Gamma]([psi][prime])=306[plus minus]36[plus minus]16 keV, and that the mass of the [ital J]/[psi] is 3096.87[plus minus]0.03[plus minus]0.03 MeV/[ital c][sup 2]. For the [ital J]/[psi] we obtain [ital B]([ital J]/[psi][r arrow][ital [bar p]p])[ital B]([ital J]/[psi][r arrow][ital e][sup +][ital e[minus]]) =(1.14[sup +0.16][sub [minus]0.12][plus minus]0.10)[times]10[sup [minus]4]; for the [psi][prime] we obtain [ital B]([psi][prime][r arrow][ital [bar p]p])[[ital B]([psi][prime][r arrow][ital e][sup +][ital e[minus]]) +[ital B]([psi][prime][r arrow][ital J]/[psi][ital X])[ital B]([ital J]/[psi][r arrow][ital e][sup +][ital e[minus]])] =(1.17[sub [minus]0.12][sup +0.14][plus minus]0.08)[times]10[sup [minus]5].

An analysis of ultrasound signals accompanying bubble nucleations confirms that alpha decays generate a significantly louder acoustic emission than single nuclear recoils, leading to an efficient background discrimination. Three dark matter candidate events were observed during an effective exposure of 28.1 kg day, consistent with a neutron background. This observation provides strong direct detection constraints on weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP)-proton spin-dependent scattering for WIMP masses20 GeV/c2.

Abstract

Within the framework of the Fermilab Muon Collider Task Force, the possibility of developing a dedicated muon test beam for cooling experiments has been investigated. Cooling experiments can be performed in a very low intensity muon beam by tracking single particles through the cooling device. With sufficient muon intensity and large enough cooling decrement, a cooling demonstration experiment may also be performed without resolving single particle trajectories, but rather by measuring the average size and position of the beam. This allows simpler, and thus cheaper, detectors and readout electronics to be used. This paper discusses muon production using 400MeV protons from the Linac, decay channel and beamline design, as well as the instrumentation required for such an experiment, in particular as applied to testing the Helical Cooling Channel (HCC) proposed by Muons Inc.

Abstract

MANX is an experiment to prove that effective six- dimensional (6D) muon beam cooling can be achieved in a Helical Cooling Channel (HCC) using ionization- cooling with helical and solenoidal magnets in a novel configuration. The aim is to demonstrate that 6D muon beam cooling is understood well enough to plan intense neutrino factories and high-luminosity muon colliders. The experiment consists of the HCC magnet that envelops a liquid helium energy absorber, upstream and downstream instrumentation to measure the beam parameters before and after cooling, and emittance matching sections between the detectors and the HCC.

Abstract

The 8.9‐GeV/c Recycler antiproton storage ring is equipped with both stochastic and electron cooling systems. These cooling systems are designed to assist accumulation of antiprotons for the Tevatron collider operations. In this paper we report on an experimental demonstration of electron cooling of high‐energy antiprotons. At the time of writing this report, the Recycler electron cooling system is routinely used in collider operations. It has helped to set recent peak luminosity records.

The Fermilab Recycler is a fixed 8 GeV kinetic energy storage ring located in the Fermilab Main Injector tunnel near the ceiling. The recycler has two roles in Run II. First, to store antiprotons from the Fermilab Antiproton Accumulator so that the antiproton production rate is no longer compromised by large numbers of antiprotons stored in the accumulator. Second, to receive antiprotons from the Fermilab Tevatron at the end of luminosity periods. To perform each of these roles, stochastic cooling in the recycler is needed to preserve and cool antiprotons in preparation for transfer to the Tevatron. The commissioning and performance of the Recycler stochastic cooling systems will be reviewed

Abstract

The HERA-B RICH uses a radiation path length of 2.8 m in C_4F_10 gas and a large 24 square meters spherical mirror for imaging Cherenkov rings. The photon detector consists of 2240 Hamamatsu multi-anode photomultipliers with about 27000 channels. A 2:1 reducing two-lens telescope in front of each PMT increases the sensitive area at the expense of increased pixel size, resulting in a contribution to the resolution which roughly matches that of dispersion. The counter was completed in January of 1999, and its performance has been steady and reliable over the years it has been in operation. The design performance of the RICH was fully reached: the average number of detected photons in the RICH for a beta=1 particle was found to be 33 with a single hit resolution of 0.7 mrad and 1 mrad in the fine and coarse granularity regions, respectively., Comment: 29 pages, 23 figures

Abstract

A summary of experimental studies of different photon detectors is presented. A CsI photocathode in a multiwire proportional chamber, a TMAE based gaseous photon detector and a new Hamamatsu multianode photomultiplier tube have been investigated in order to evaluate their suitability as photon detectors in the ring imaging Cherenkov counter of HERA-B. The results of the present work suggest that only the MA-PMT meets the demanding requirements of the HERA-B experimental environment. The CsI-MWPC cannot be routinely produced and maintained with sufficiently high quantum efficiency and the TMAE photon detectors lose gain as a result of relatively quick anode wire ageing.

Abstract

We present the first high-statistics study of the ηη system over the mass range 1000–3000 MeV/c2. The experiment was performed at the Fermilab Antiproton Accumulator, and the data sample consists of six-photon final states produced in antiproton-proton annihilations at s in the range 2950–3620 MeV. We find evidence for three states with masses 1488 ± 10 MeV/c2, 1748 ± 10 MeV/c2 and 2104 ± 20 MeV/c2 respectively.

Abstract

Fermilab experiment E-760 has confirmed the f2(1520) state in the 3πo final state in antiproton-proton annihilations in-flight (~3.0 to 3.6 GeV c.m. energy), seen previously by Crystal Barrel and other groups at CERN at rest. The f2(1520) is also seen in its 2πo decay mode in the 2πoη channel and 2η decay mode in the πo2η channel. There are indications of this state in the 3η decay channel. The invariant mass spectrum is rich in states near 2 GeV, and amplitude and spin/parity analysis of the Dalitz plot is in progress in this mass region.

E760 is a fixed target experiment dedicated to the study of charmonium spectroscopy in pp annihilations. Results on X1 and X2 resonance parameters from 1990 data taking are presented, consisting of precise measurement of mass, total width and partial width to pp. A preliminary result is presented on the first direct determination of ϱ' width from line shape analysis.

Abstract

We report on a study of the χ 1 ( 3 P 1 ) and χ 2 ( 3 P 2 ) states of charmonium formed in antiproton-proton annihilations. An energy scan through the resonances, performed with a very narrow momentum-band beam of antiprotons intersecting a hydrogen jet target, enables us to perform very precise measurements of the mass and the total width of the two resonances. From a sample of 513 χ1 and 585 χ2 events we find Mχ1 = (3510.53±0.13) MeV/c2, Mχ2 = (3556.15±0.14) MeV/c2, Γχ1 = (0.88±0.14) MeV and Γχ2 = (1.98±0.18) MeV. From our measurement of the quantity Γ( R → p p ) × BR(R → J ψ → e + e − ) , using known branching ratios, we obtain Λ(χ 1 → p p) = (69±13) eV and Λ(χ 2 → p p) = (180±31) eV .

Abstract

Differential cross sections for p p elastic scattering have been measured for very small momentum transfers at six different incident antiproton momenta in the range 3.7 to 6.2 GeV/c by the detection of recoil protons at scattering angles close to 90°. Forward scattering parameters σ T , b , and ϱ have been determined. For the ϱ-parameter, up to an order of magnitude higher level of precision has been achieved compared to that in earlier experiments. It is found that existing dispersion theory predictions are in disagreement with our results for the ϱ-parameter.

Abstract

A 4.3-MeV electron cooling system [1] has been installed at Fermilab in the Recycler antiproton storage ring and is currently being commissioned. The cooling system is designed to assist accumulation of 8.9-GeV/c antiprotons for the Tevatron collider operations. This paper reports on the progress of the electron beam commissioning effort as well as on detailed plans of demonstrating the cooling of antiprotons.

Abstract

Particle accelerators and storage rings have been transformative instruments of discovery, and, for many applications, innovations in particle-beam cooling have been a principal driver of that success 1 . Stochastic cooling (SC), one of the most important conceptual and technological advances in this area 2-6 , cools a beam through granular sampling and correction of its phase-space structure, thus bearing resemblance to a 'Maxwell's demon'. The extension of SC from the microwave regime up to optical frequencies and bandwidths has long been pursued, as it could increase the achievable cooling rates by three to four orders of magnitude and provide a powerful tool for future accelerators. First proposed nearly 30 years ago, optical stochastic cooling (OSC) replaces the conventional microwave elements of SC with optical-frequency analogues and is, in principle, compatible with any species of charged-particle beam 7,8 . Here we describe a demonstration of OSC in a proof-of-principle experiment at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory's Integrable Optics Test Accelerator 9,10 . The experiment used 100-MeV electrons and a non-amplified configuration of OSC with a radiation wavelength of 950 nm, and achieved strong, simultaneous cooling of the beam in all degrees of freedom. This realization of SC at optical frequencies serves as a foundation for more advanced experiments with high-gain optical amplification, and advances opportunities for future operational OSC systems with potential benefit to a broad user community in the accelerator-based sciences., (© 2022. Abstract

We report results from the first search for ν&#95;{μ}→ν&#95;{e} transitions by the NOvA experiment. In an exposure equivalent to 2.74×10^{20} protons on target in the upgraded NuMI beam at Fermilab, we observe 6 events in the Far Detector, compared to a background expectation of 0.99±0.11(syst) events based on the Near Detector measurement. A secondary analysis observes 11 events with a background of 1.07±0.14(syst). The 3.3σ excess of events observed in the primary analysis disfavors 0.1π<δ&#95;{CP}<0.5π in the inverted mass hierarchy at the 90% C.L.

Abstract

New data are reported from the operation of a 2 liter C3F8 bubble chamber in the SNOLAB underground laboratory, with a total exposure of 211.5 kg days at four different energy thresholds below 10 keV. These data show that C3F8 provides excellent electron-recoil and alpha rejection capabilities at very low thresholds. The chamber exhibits an electron-recoil sensitivity of <3.5×10(-10) and an alpha rejection factor of >98.2%. These data also include the first observation of a dependence of acoustic signal on alpha energy. Twelve single nuclear recoil event candidates were observed during the run. The candidate events exhibit timing characteristics that are not consistent with the hypothesis of a uniform time distribution, and no evidence for a dark matter signal is claimed. These data provide the most sensitive direct detection constraints on WIMP-proton spin-dependent scattering to date, with significant sensitivity at low WIMP masses for spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering.

Abstract

Data from the operation of a bubble chamber filled with 3.5 kg of CF3I in a shallow underground site are reported. An analysis of ultrasound signals accompanying bubble nucleations confirms that alpha decays generate a significantly louder acoustic emission than single nuclear recoils, leading to an efficient background discrimination. Three dark matter candidate events were observed during an effective exposure of 28.1  kg  day, consistent with a neutron background. This observation provides strong direct detection constraints on weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP)-proton spin-dependent scattering for WIMP masses >20  GeV/c2.

Abstract

We report on an experimental demonstration of electron cooling of high-energy antiprotons circulating in a storage ring. In our experiments, electron cooling, a well-established method at low energies (<500 MeV/nucleon), was carried out in a new region of beam parameters, requiring a multi-MeV dc electron beam and an unusual beam transport line. In this Letter, we present the results of the longitudinal cooling force measurements and compare them with theoretical predictions.
