We present the results of XPS measurements (core levels and valence bands) of solution processed TiOx thin films prepared from titanium butoxide (C16H36O4Ti) diluted in isopropanol which is a common sol-gel route for fabricating TiOx electron selective contacts for ITO/TiOx inverted organic photovoltaics bottom electrodes. XPS Ti 2p and valence band spectra show the presence of additional features which are absent in spectra of titanium butoxide deposited on Si and are attributed to appearance of Ti^{3+} valence states in ITO/TiOx. This conclusion is confirmed by density functional theory electronic structure calculations of stoichiometric TiO2 and oxygen deficient TiO_{2-1/8}. XPS C 1s measurements show the formation of C-O and O-C=O bonds which evidence the presence of residual carbon which can draw oxygen from the film network and induce the formation of fraction of Ti3+ states in TiOx films.

Abstract The growing global food demand, coupled with the limitations of traditional pest control methods, has driven the search for innovative and sustainable solutions in agricultural pest management. In this review, we highlight polymeric nanocarriers for their potential to deliver double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) and control pests through the gene-silencing mechanism of RNA interference (RNAi). Polymer-dsRNA systems have shown promise in protecting dsRNA, facilitating cellular uptake, and ensuring precise release. Despite these advances, challenges such as scalability, cost-efficiency, regulatory approval, and public acceptance persist, necessitating further research to overcome these obstacles and fully unlock the potential of RNAi in sustainable agriculture.

11. Mimetite and polymineralic mimetite-pyromorphite-vanadinite single crystals from the Sowie Mts, Poland

Millimeter-sized crystals of mimetite and pyromorphite, and polymineralic mimetite-pyromorphite-vanadinite crystals occur in quartz-baryte vein within paragneisses of the Sowie Mts, SW Poland. Three morphologically different mimetite crystals and a polymineralic crystal were examined by electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA), back-scattered electrons (BSE) imaging, Raman microspectroscopy, and X-ray composition mapping. Mimetite occurs as well-developed crystals, crystals built up of sub-parallel individuals due to autoepitaxial growth, and crystals extensively etched. All of the mimetite crystals are zoned with respect to pyromorphite molecule content with sharp increase up to 23 mol% in the outermost zones. The apparent vanadinite crystal actually consists of oscillatory-zoned pyromorphite + minor vanadinite core, intermediate zones composed of pyromorphite, two mimetite zones intercalated by a band of oscillatory pyromorphite and minor vanadinite, and vanadinite mantle. EPMA data show a limited miscibility between all three minerals in the polymineralic crystal. Most analyzes cluster around 10 mol% of ternary solid solution with the maximum value of ca. 30 mol%. X-ray elemental maps reveal sharp boundaries between compositionally contrasting zones in the crystal core. In mimetite zones, the substitution of As by P does not exceed 0.43 atoms per formula unit (apfu). In the vanadinite mantle, As + P does not exceed 0.30 apfu. The distribution of Pb is uniform throughout the crystal with the highest Ca/Pb ratio of 0.03. The observed sequence of crystallization in the polymineralic crystal can be explained by the relative changes in ions concentrations at the crystal/solution interface, i.e. within the diffusion boundary layer, in accord with the models of the autocatalytic crystal growth. The authors hypothesize that kinetically driven fast growth of the polymineralic crystals resulted in precipitation of discrete mineral phases with very limited anionic substitutions.

Abstract Social scientists have long debated the nature of cultural change in a modernizing and globalizing world. Some scholars predicted that national cultures would converge by adopting social values typical of Western democracies. Others predicted that cultural differences in values would persist or even increase over time. We test these competing predictions by analyzing survey data from 1981 to 2022 (n = 406,185) from 76 national cultures. We find evidence of global value divergence. Values emphasizing tolerance and self-expression have diverged most sharply, especially between high-income Western countries and the rest of the world. We also find that countries with similar per-capita GDP levels have held similar values over the last 40 years. Over time, however, geographic proximity has emerged as an increasingly strong correlate of value similarity, indicating that values have diverged globally but converged regionally.

This article presents analyzed data on the antimicrobial, barrier, and mechanical properties inherent to films created by blending carrot pomace with wheat gluten and polyglycerol-3 plasticizer and combined with varying contents (0 wt.%, 3 wt.%, and 5 wt.%) of eugenol, a natural antimicrobial compound derived from essential oils. The integration of carrot pomace, wheat gluten, plasticizer, and eugenol involved meticulous mortar and pestle processing, ensuring a homogenous blend. Subsequently, the mixture was compression-molded in a hydraulic press to fabricate the films. Standard bacteria strains—Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538—are used in the antimicrobial evaluation, and antimicrobial efficacy is measured using OD600 measurements. Water vapor permeability (WVP) measurement effectively defines the films' potential to prevent water vapor infiltration. Mechanical properties are assessed by determining elastic modulus, tensile strength, and elongation at break, which together reveal the films' adaptive flexibility and durability. The dataset presented herein holds substantial promise for food packaging applications. Researchers in the food packaging industry can leverage the antimicrobial and barrier property data to design novel packaging materials, potentially enhancing shelf-life and food safety. Engineers and material scientists can utilize the mechanical properties data to develop structurally robust and flexible materials.

21. Evaluation of an Enzyme-Linked Magnetic Electrochemical Assay for Hepatitis a Virus Detection in Drinking and Vegetable Processing Water

Globally, waterborne viral infections significantly threaten public health. While current European Union regulations stipulate that drinking water must be devoid of harmful pathogens, they do not specifically address the presence of enteric viruses in water used for irrigation or food production. Traditional virus detection methods rely on molecular biology assays, requiring specialized personnel and laboratory facilities. Here, we describe an electrochemical sandwich enzyme-linked immunomagnetic assay (ELIME) for the detection of the hepatitis A virus (HAV) in water matrices. This method employed screen-printed electrodes as the sensing platform and utilized commercially available pre-activated magnetic beads to provide a robust foundation for the immunological reaction. The ELIME assay demonstrated exceptional analytical performance in only 185 min achieving a detection limit of 0.5 genomic copies per milliliter (g.c./mL) and exhibiting good reproducibility with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 7% in HAV-spiked drinking and processing water samples. Compared with the real-time RT-qPCR method described in ISO 15216-1, the ELIME assay demonstrated higher sensitivity, although the overall linearity of the method was moderate. These analytical attributes highlight the potential of the ELIME assay as a rapid and viable alternative for HAV detection in water used for agriculture and food processing.

Objectives To investigate pregnancy outcomes in women with autoimmune rheumatic diseases (ARD) in the Italian prospective cohort study P-RHEUM.it.Methods Pregnant women with different ARD were enrolled for up to 20 gestational weeks in 29 Rheumatology Centres for 5 years (2018–2023). Maternal and infant information were collected in a web-based database.Results We analysed 866 pregnancies in 851 patients (systemic lupus erythematosus was the most represented disease, 19.6%). Maternal disease flares were observed in 135 (15.6%) pregnancies. 53 (6.1%) pregnancies were induced by assisted reproduction techniques, 61 (7%) ended in miscarriage and 11 (1.3%) underwent elective termination. Obstetrical complications occurred in 261 (30.1%) pregnancies, including 2.3% pre-eclampsia. Two cases of congenital heart block were observed out of 157 pregnancies (1.3%) with anti-Ro/SSA. Regarding treatments, 244 (28.2%) pregnancies were treated with glucocorticoids, 388 (44.8%) with hydroxychloroquine, 85 (9.8%) with conventional synthetic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs and 122 (14.1%) with biological disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs. Live births were 794 (91.7%), mostly at term (84.9%); four perinatal deaths (0.5%) occurred. Among 790 newborns, 31 (3.9%) were small-for-gestational-age and 169 (21.4%) had perinatal complications. Exclusive maternal breast feeding was received by 404 (46.7%) neonates. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale was compiled by 414 women (52.4%); 89 (21.5%) scored positive for emotional distress.Conclusions Multiple factors including preconception counselling and treat-to-target with pregnancy-compatible medications may have contributed to mitigate disease-related risk factors, yielding limited disease flares, good pregnancy outcomes and frequency of complications which were similar to the Italian general obstetric population. Disease-specific issues need to be further addressed to plan preventative measures.

23. Surface Morphology and Formation of Nanocrystals in an Amorphous Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5 Alloy under High-Pressure Torsion

A change in the structure of an amorphous Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5 alloy under deformation by high-pressure torsion (HPT) was studied by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. It was found that the uneven distribution of deformation along the radius of the sample, characteristic of deformation by high-pressure torsion, led to the formation of an inhomogeneous structure. The formation of nanocrystals begins at the periphery of the sample. The threshold value of deformation required for crystallization onset was established; the formation of nanocrystals begins in areas with true deformation e = 4.83 or more. An increase in the deformation degree led to an increase in the height of steps on the deformed sample surface and an increase in the roughness of the surface. The thickness of an elementary step that was formed when one shear band came out to the surface was 10 nm, and its height was about 1 nm. It was found that large steps on the deformed surface of the sample had a complex structure and consisted of a large number of elementary steps. The results obtained are important for analyzing the stress distribution and the concentration of free volume in a deformed material, which affect the parameters of the amorphous-nanocrystalline structure formed.

24. Space–Time Patterns of Nest Site and Nesting Area Selection by the Italian Population of European Rollers: A 3-Year Study of a Farmland Bird Species

The European Roller Coracias garrulus has suffered greatly from breeding habitat loss due to the renovation of old farmhouses and rural buildings and changing agricultural practices that took place extensively across Europe in the last decades. As a consequence, this species experienced a significant decline, and local extinctions of breeding populations were recorded in several European countries. We investigated nest sites and nesting area selection by the Italian Roller population during the breeding period (May–August) between 2016 and 2018. We collected 711 points from field surveys and used four types of point pattern analysis to detect space-time patterns of nest site and nesting area selection. We found that: (a) the spatial distribution of selected (i.e., occupied) nest sites was significantly nonrandom (p < 0.01) for all years and months; (b) only 2.6% of the selected nest sites was located within parks or reserves; (c) there were significant (p < 0.01) latitudinal, longitudinal, and altitudinal shifts of selected nest sites between May and August; (d) the geographical barycentres of selected nest sites shifted northward by about 80 km per month from May (southernmost barycentre) to August (northernmost barycentre); (e) four main nesting areas (7886 km2 in total) occurred in central and southern Italy, whose utilization by the European Rollers differed between months but not between years; (f) the detected nesting areas corresponded mainly to non-irrigated arable lands (41.22% of their extent) and natural grasslands (12.80%). Our results are useful to support conservation strategies for the breeding sites of this farmland species, which is not a regular visitor to protected areas in Italy.

Abstract Objective To analyze the serum levels of TNF-alpha and its TNF-R1 and TNF-R2 receptors in the blood of patients with low-impact fractures due to osteoporosis, comparing between genders and with healthy patients. Methods The present study was conducted with a blood sample of 62 patients, divided into patients with osteoporosis and healthy patients. The results were obtained using the ELISA method. Cytokine concentrations were determined based on the absorbance values obtained. Results Serum TNF-alpha levels were undetectable in female patients, while in males they were found only in one patient, with no significant difference. Similar results were found in the analyses of TNF-R1 and TNF-R2 levels, a significant increase in levels of TNF-alpha receptors in the groups of patients with osteoporosis compared with the control groupinbothsexes.There wasnosignificant difference between the sexes in the dosage of both receptors within the group with osteoporosis. There was also a positive and significant correlation in the levels of TNF-R1 and TNF-R2 only in women. Conclusion The significant increase in TNF-R1 and TNF-R2 levels in women with osteoporosis suggest that the release and expression of these receptors may be contributing differently to the development of osteoporosis in men and women.

γ-Aminobutyric acid type A receptors (GABAARs) are members of the pentameric ligand-gated ion channel (pLGIC) family, which are widespread throughout the invertebrate and vertebrate central nervous system. GABAARs are engaged in short-term changes of the neuronal concentrations of chloride (Cl−) and bicarbonate (HCO3−) ions by their passive permeability through the ion channel pore. GABAARs are regulated by various structurally diverse phenolic substances ranging from simple phenols to complex polyphenols. The wide chemical and structural variability of phenols suggest similar and different binding sites on GABAARs, allowing them to manifest themselves as activators, inhibitors, or allosteric ligands of GABAAR function. Interest in phenols is associated with their great potential for GABAAR modulation, but also with their subsequent negative or positive role in neurological and psychiatric disorders. This review focuses on the GABAergic deficit hypotheses during neurological and psychiatric disorders induced by various phenols. We summarize the structure–activity relationship of general phenol groups concerning their differential roles in the manifestation of neuropsychiatric symptoms. We describe and analyze the role of GABAAR subunits in manifesting various neuropathologies and the molecular mechanisms underlying their modulation by phenols. Finally, we discuss how phenol drugs can modulate GABAAR activity via desensitization and resensitization. We also demonstrate a novel pharmacological approach to treat neuropsychiatric disorders via regulation of receptor phosphorylation/dephosphorylation.

Pervaporation is considered the most promising technology for dehydration of bioalcohols, attracting increasing attention as a renewable energy source. In this regard, the development of stable and effective membranes is required. In this study, highly efficient membranes for the enhanced pervaporation dehydration of ethanol were developed by modification of sodium alginate (SA) with a polyethylenimine (PEI) forming polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) and graphene oxide (GO). The effect of modifications with GO or/and PEI on the structure, physicochemical, and transport characteristics of dense membranes was studied. The formation of a PEC by ionic cross-linking and its interaction with GO led to changes in membrane structure, confirmed by spectroscopic and microscopic methods. The physicochemical properties of membranes were investigated by a thermogravimetric analysis, a differential scanning calorimetry, and measurements of contact angles. The theoretical consideration using computational methods showed favorable hydrogen bonding interactions between GO, PEI, and water, which caused improved membrane performance. To increase permeability, supported membranes without treatment and cross-linked were developed by the deposition of a thin dense layer from the optimal PEC/GO (2.5%) composite onto a developed porous substrate from polyacrylonitrile. The cross-linked supported membrane demonstrated more than two times increased permeation flux, higher selectivity (above 99.7 wt.% water in the permeate) and stability for separating diluted mixtures compared to the dense pristine SA membrane.

Herein, a sensitivity-modulable ELIMC (Enzyme-Linked Immuno-Magnetic Colorimetric) assay for the determination of microcystins/nodularins in water samples is presented.Firstly, we revisited a commercial ELISA microcystins/nodularins tube kit using Magnetic Beads as a solid phase of the immuno-complex. All immunological reactions occur in a single short-step procedure, followed by a colorimetric enzymatic reaction. The ELIMC assay showed a detection limit, sensitivity, working range and rapidity similar to those of the commercial kit but, thanks to the use of MBs, the analysis number was increased from 40 to 250, minimizing the use of reagents and therefore the waste generation, facilitating environmental sustainability. Satisfactory recovery and precision, obtained by analyzing controls, drinking and freshwater samples, directly without any pre-treatment, proved the suitability of the assay as a rapid screening method for numerous samples. Then, the analytical performance of the ELIMC assay was improved by making simple changes to the protocol. By doubling the enzyme-substrate reaction time and halving the concentration of the primary antibody a lower detection limit (0.03 ng/mL), an increased sensitivity (0.26 ng/mL) and a wider working range (0.05–2.0 ng/mL) were reached. Recovery from 84 to 120% and precision (RSD) from 7.3 to 16.6% demonstrated the reliability of the enhanced ELIMC assay to measure very low concentrations of MCs/NODs in water samples, allowing the adoption of timely corrective actions in the frame of environmental recovery programs.

Soft markers are sonographic structural, nonspecific signs with little pathological significance, often transient, usually considered as normal variants. However, they may also be associated with chromosomal abnormalities. The most widely examined soft markers include absent or hypoplastic nasal bone (NB), intracardiac echogenic focus (IEF), ventriculomegaly (VM), thickened nuchal fold (NF), choroid plexus cyst (CPC), echogenic bowel, short long bones, and urinary tract dilation (UTD). Although the use of noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) has been spreading quickly in maternal–fetal medicine, it is not a diagnostic test and it still remains unavailable or cost-prohibitive for most of the population in many countries. After normal screening test results in the first trimester, there is no uniform consensus regarding the clinical significance of isolated soft markers for aneuploidy. Nowadays, the search for soft markers in an ultrasound is still part of clinical evaluation, and the interpretation of these findings is often a matter of debate. In the present review, we summarize the recent literature about the role of soft markers in the era of NIPT and propose an overview of the different clinical guidelines.

Infectious diseases during pregnancy are still a major cause of fetal mortality and morbidity worldwide. The most common teratogenic pathogens are cytomegalovirus (CMV), varicella-zoster virus (VZV), rubeovirus, parvovirus B19, herpes simplex virus (HSV), Toxoplasma gondii, Treponema pallidum and the emergent Zika virus (ZIKV). Ultrasound findings include cerebral anomalies, orbital defects, micrognathia, cardiac defects, hepatosplenomegaly, liver calcifications, abdominal anomalies, skin and limb anomalies, edema, placental and amniotic fluid anomalies and altered Doppler analyses. The classification of ultrasound markers of congenital infections by anatomical region is reported to guide differential diagnosis and prenatal care.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to identify and characterize the care provided to adolescents admitted to an emergency department due to a suicide attempt. Methods: an observational, cross-sectional, descriptive study with a retrospective approach, carried out with medical records of adolescents aged 10 to 19 admitted for suicide attempts, between January 2015 and July 2020, in an emergency department. Data were subjected to descriptive and inferential analysis. Results: eighty-eight service occurrences were identified, mainly to females, exposed to multiple risk factors. Exogenous intoxication was the main method used, occurring at home and on weekdays. There were systemic repercussions, requiring multiple interventions and hospitalizations. Only 26% of cases were notified. Conclusions: adolescents treated for suicide attempts were exposed to multiple risk factors, with intoxication as the main means used. There is concern about the underreporting of cases and the logic of clinical care and medicalization.

Studies in humans have shown sex differences in response to painful events, however, little is known in relation to sex differences in sheep. Understanding sex differences would enable improved experimental design and interpretation of studies of painful procedures in sheep. To examine sex differences in response to pain, 80 lambs were tested across five cohorts of 16. The lambs were penned in groups containing two male and two female lambs with their respective mothers. Lambs were randomly allocated from within each block to one of four treatment groups; FRing–Female lamb, ring tail docked without analgesia, MRing–Male lamb, ring tail docked without analgesia, FSham–Female lamb, tail manipulated and MSham–Male lamb, tail manipulated. Following treatment, lambs were returned to their pen and were video recorded for 45 mins for behavioural observations of acute pain and posture. An hour after treatment, lambs then underwent an emotional reactivity test that consisted of three phases: Isolation, Novelty and Startle. Following treatment, Ring lambs displayed more abnormal postures (mean = 2.5 ± 0.5) compared to Sham lambs (mean = 0.05 ± 0.4, P = 0.0001). Abstract Objective The present study aims to evaluate the influence of hormonal levels of vitamin D, calcitonin, testosterone, estradiol, and parathyroid in patients with fractures attributed to osteoporosis when compared with young patients with fractures resulting from high-impact accidents. Methods Blood samples were collected from 30 elderly patients with osteoporosisattributed fractures (T-score ≤-2.5) (osteoporotic group), and from 30 young patients with fractures resulting from high-impact accidents (control group). Measurement of 1,25-hydroxyvitamin D (Kit Diasorin, Saluggia, Italy), calcitonin (Kit Siemens, Tarrytown, NY, USA), testosterone, estradiol, and parathyroid hormone (Kit Beckman Couter, Indianapolis, IN, United States) was performed using a chemiluminescence technique. Data were inserted into a Microsoft Excel (Microsoft Corp., Armonk, WA, USA) spreadsheet and analyzed using Statview statistical software. Results showing non-normal distribution were analyzed with nonparametric methods. The Mann-Whitney test was applied for group comparison, and a Spearman test correlated hormonal levels. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. All analyzes compared gender and subjects with and without osteoporosis. Results Women with osteoporosis had significantly lower levels of estradiol and vitamin D (p = 0.047 and p = 0.0275, respectively). Men with osteoporosis presented significantly higher levels of parathyroid hormone (p = 0.0065). There was no significant difference in testosterone and calcitonin levels. Conclusion Osteoporosis patients presented gender-related hormonal differences. Women had significantly lower levels of estradiol and vitamin D, whereas men had significantly higher parathyroid hormone levels, apparently impacting the disease.

Lupin is among the most promising plant-based food protein sources due to its high protein and fibre content. The fibre fraction, especially from seed coats, is often seen as low in value (discarded as waste or as animal feed) and greater knowledge on its composition and structure are crucial to increase its usefulness. However, only one model of lupin fibre structure exists in the literature. Our sample of Finnish-grown narrow-leafed lupin seed consisted of fibre (43.3%), protein (31.3%), fat (8.1%) and starch (0.2%). According to the sugar analysis, rhamnogalacturonan-I, with branches of arabinan and galactan, constituted the main pectin population in the fibre fraction. A revised model of the overall fibre structure is proposed. At concentrations of 0.75% and 1.0%, both unrefined and defatted flour of whole lupin seeds produced stable suspensions and oil-in-water emulsions, demonstrating their application as potential emulsifiers. This study presents the knowledge and opportunity to support sustainability through the utilization of whole lupin seed for future industrial applications.

Abstract Background The COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent national lockdowns, school closures and distance learning may have had both negative and positive effects on physical and mental health of children. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on a large group of children between 1 and 10 years old in Lombardy, Italy (n = 3392). Their parents filled in a survey answering single or multiple-choice questions about their offspring’s behavior changes (including sleep, dietary habits, emotional disturbances), relationship with siblings, parents and peers, the use of digital technologies, and distance learning experience during the lockdown. Results Parents reported lifestyles and emotional alterations during the lockdown. The modifications of family relationships, parents’ remote working, and screen time were associated with sleep, emotional and behavioral modifications. Distance learning was overall considered adequate. Conclusions This study reported the most updated data on the effects of COVID-19 pandemic lockdown on children between 1 and 10 years of age in a large sample of Italian schoolchildren. The results of this study point out that pediatricians and authorities should support relationships within families during the COVID-19 pandemic. Parents’ remote working might play an important role for this purpose.

Coeliac disease is a very common autoimmune disease estimated to affect 1 in 100 people worldwide. It occurs in genetically predisposed people where the ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small intestine, and it is accurately diagnosticated through duodenal biopsy, an invasive diagnostic method. The liquid biopsy, generally used for monitoring cancer, is an appealing alternative even for autoimmune pathology such as coeliac disease, allowing for detecting disease progression or resistance to treatment. For this reason, an electrochemical peptide nucleic acid (PNA) device combined with a smartphone‐assisted potentiostat for non‐invasive coeliac disease diagnosis is proposed, by measuring the selected overexpressed miRNA‐486‐5p in serum, enlarging the application of liquid biopsy in nontumor pathologies. For highly sensitive detection, the polyester‐based printed sensor is nanomodified with gold nanoparticles and a synthetic customized PNA probe. The designed sensor can detect the target analyte in the range of 10–100 nm with a limit of detection of 0.7 nm by measuring the variation of the response of the electrochemical mediator hexaammineruthenium in the presence of PNA–miRNA duplex on the nanostructured working electrode surface. The analyses testing serum samples are found in agreement with ones obtained by real‐time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT‐qPCR), demonstrating the reliability of this innovative electrochemical chip developed.

The effect of free volume on the crystallization of amorphous Fe78Si13B9 ribbons was studied using ultrasonic and thermal treatments. To maintain free volume under heating, amorphous samples were coated with a special protective Ta coating. It has been shown via X-ray diffraction that the fraction of the crystalline phase in the annealed coated amorphous ribbons is higher than in the corresponding uncoated samples. The use of ultrasonic treatment and the application of a protective coating lead to the formation of a larger proportion of the crystalline phase during annealing. Differences in crystallization kinetics are discussed under the assumption that the concentration of free volume in amorphous samples affects their crystallization, as well as the role of the Ta coating preventing the release of free volume to the surface during heat treatment.

Background: The perception of facial aesthetics is a complex topic due to its subjective nature and it can be influenced by several factors. The purpose of this study was to compare the perception of general dentists, orthodontists, maxillofacial surgeons, and lay people by evaluating facial aesthetics in skeletal class III patients, especially for maxillary sagittal position. Methods: A survey consisting of three sets of pre-treatment photographs of four dysmorphic patients was used. The questionnaire was submitted to a total of 200 participants divided into the following four subgroups: general dentists, orthodontists, maxillofacial surgeons, and lay people. Their opinion on facial disharmony, sagittal position of the jaws, asymmetry of the chin, projection of the cheekbone area, and lip aesthetics was recorded. Results: Significant differences were found between experts and non-experts in the perception of the maxillary position, asymmetry of the chin and zygomatic area (p < 0.01). No statistically significant differences were found among the groups in the perception of mandibular position and lip aesthetics. Conclusion: The respondents with a medical or dental background perceived the presence of maxillary retrusion more than others. Only orthodontists and maxillofacial surgeons have recognized an alteration of the middle facial third as a greater component of skeletal class III malocclusion.

Background: Assessing outcomes of birth in induced patients (full-term and premature) in relation with symphysis-fundal height (SFH) measurement. Methods: A prospective enrollment of induced patients was performed at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Unit of Arcispedale Sant’Anna of Ferrara. Reasons for induction, Bishop’s score, body mass index, gestational age, parity, mode of induction, number of induction cycles, time of active labor phase, Cesarean section, operative vaginal birth, post-partum hemorrhage, arterial cord pH, neonatal intensive care admission, size at birth were recorded. Correspondence analysis was applied to analyze independent relationships. These relationships were converted into probabilities. Probabilities for outcomes variables were plotted along with values of SFH and trends were tested. Results: Significant trends of increasing probability of adverse birth and labor outcomes were observed for SFH from 34 cm or less to over 37 cm: two cycles of induction (best fit p = 0.002); three cycles of induction (best fit p = 0.002); Cesarean section (best fit p = 0.027); higher length of active phase of labor (best fit p = 0.002); operative vaginal birth (best fit p = 0.002); arterial blood pH below or equal to 7.15 (best fit p = 0.006); post-partum minor hemorrhage (best fit p = 0.002), post-partum major hemorrhage (best fit p = 0.006). Conclusion: In induced pregnancies, SFH over 34 cm increased the probability of both neonatal and labor adverse outcomes, independently of gestational age.

ABSTRACT Objective: Understand the beliefs, knowledge, and actions of nursing technicians on breastfeeding as a form of non-pharmacological intervention to relieve pain in newborns and infants during immunization. Methods: Qualitative study carried out through semi-structured interviews with nine nursing technicians from three Basic Health Units in a city in the state of São Paulo. The theoretical approach of the Belief Model and the methodological framework of Thematic Analysis supported this study. Results: Three themes originated: Beliefs, Knowledge, and Actions of nursing technicians. Final considerations: Despite knowledge about the benefits of breastfeeding as the most effective method for relieving pain in newborns and infants during vaccination, their restrictive beliefs overrode the evidence, leading them to act in ways that discourage or prevent the mother from breastfeed during vaccination. Formal training is recommended to align with current evidence-based practices.

Herein, we report the environmental impact quantification of a newly developed fully printed electrochemical device to assist a colorimetric detection of phosphate in saliva. The evaluation of the analytical procedure was performed according to the principles of Green Analytical Chemistry and White Analytical Chemistry. The standard method for phosphate detection relies on a reaction between phosphate and molybdate in presence of antimony potassium tartrate and ascorbic acid, using strong acid conditions and high volumes of reagents (100–500 mL). To deliver an eco-friendly method, we have combined a screen-printed electrode with a liquid electrolyte battery and inkjet-printed conductive paths to develop a fully printed device on a flexible polymer substrate avoiding the use of ascorbic acid and using a small amount of reagents. The printed sensor was first developed and optimized for phosphate detection in saliva, allowing for a detection limit equal to 26 µM and satisfactory repeatability (relative standard deviation value of 7.5%). Finally, the AGREE and the RGB assessment tools were applied for a quantitative evaluation of the proposed sensor and reference method, in agreement with the Green Analytical and White Analytical principles. The results demonstrated the lower environmental impact of the proposed sensor, as well as the suitability of this novel approach for phosphate detection in saliva.

47. Sonochemically synthetized ZnO-Graphene nanohybrids and its characterization

The paper presents the morphological, structural and compositional properties of the sonochemically prepared ZnO-1.4wt% Graphene (Z-G) nanocomposites as a function of pH value of suspension varying from 8.5 to 14 and thermal annealing at 450°C in nitrogen or air ambient. The SEM analysis of the Z-G hybrids dried at 150°C in air has shown a nano-flower like nanostructure for a pH value of 14. The XRD analysis of dried Z-G hybrids revealed a crystallite size increase from 3.5 nm to 18.4 nm with pH increase, and this result was explained in terms of colloids zeta potential evolution with pH value. The Raman and EDS spectroscopy have shown a split of the G band (1575 cm−1) of graphene into two bands (1575 cm−1 and 1605 cm−1), an increased height of D (1323 cm−1) band, and an additional amount of carbon due to CO2 absorption from the air, respectively. The carbon incorporation increased with the decrease of pH, and was associated with a hydrozincite phase, Zn5(CO3)2(OH)6. The formation of dried Z-G nanocomposite was clearly demonstrated only at a pH value equal to 14, where two ZnO Raman active bands at 314.9 cm−1 and 428.2 cm−1 appeared. This result may indicate the sensitivity of the Raman spectroscopy to the nanoflower-like nanostructure of dried Z-G hybrids prepared at pH=14. The thermal treatment of Z-G hybrids in N2at 450°C has increased the number of ZnO Raman bands as a function of pH value, it has decreased the amount of additional carbon by conversion of hydrozincite to ZnO and preserved the graphene profile. The thermal treatment in air at 450°C has increased the crystalline symmetry and stoichiometry of the ZnO as revealed by high and narrow Raman band from 99 cm−1 specific to Zn optical phonons, but it has severely affected the graphene profile in the Z-G hybrid, due to combustion of graphene in oxygen from the ambient.

A agricultura é um dos setores que mais se destaca na economia do Brasil, sendo necessário muitas vezes o emprego do sensoriamento remoto, para identificação da expansão das áreas agrícolas e estimativas da sua produção. Esse trabalho tem por objetivo mapear as áreas agrícolas do noroeste de Minas Gerais por meio de máquina de vetor de suporte e comparar os resultados obtidos com o censo estatístico do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística. Para identificação das áreas agrícolas foi utilizado o algoritmo Service Vector Machine e imagens dos satélites e sensores Landsat 8 / OLI e Terra / MODIS. As amostras de treinamento do algoritmo foram obtidas por meio de imagem de alta resolução espacial, disponível no programa Google Earth Pro, nas classes rios, floresta, agricultura, pastagem e silvicultura. O mapeamento utilizando imagem do sensor OLI apresentou melhor Acurácia Global (0,81) e Kappa (0,66). A classificação com imagem OLI e MODIS apresentaram maior precisão na classe agricultura quando comparada as demais classes, apresentando confusão com pastagem, em decorrência da alta fitomassa da pastagem na época de aquisição das imagens (verão). O cálculo das áreas agrícolas demonstra superestimativa do Service Vector Machine (SVM) na classificação das imagens OLI e MODIS, com forte relação dos dados MODIS com o censo do IBGE (R²=0,83). Apenas municípios com áreas agrícolas superiores a 50.000 ha apresentaram menor erro na estimativa das áreas agrícolas. A aplicação do algoritmo mostra-se potencial para mapeamento da agricultura por meio de imagens dos sensores MODIS e OLI, porém deve-se avaliar a época de aquisição das imagens orbitais e variações nos parâmetros do algoritmo para melhorar a acurácia da classificação.

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a recurring complication resulting from the long-term therapy with bisphosphonates or antiresorptive drugs such as denosumab or antiangiogenic drugs. This paper describes a 5-years follow-up case of Stage 3 of MRONJ (AAOMS) in a 69-year-old patient treated with piezosurgery and topical application of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF). Medical treatment included antibiotic therapy and a topical treatment with PRF in solid and liquid form. This treatment showed initially the reduction of pain and leakage exudate and a complete wound healing in 25 days. The Injectable-Platelet Rich Fibrin (i-PRF) injections led to a complete resolution of oro-cutaneous fistulas in 50 days showing its ability of releasing growth factors and chemotaxis agents involved in tissue repair mechanisms. Preparation simplicity and the low cost of PRF allow to consider this method as an excellent alternative treatment for the healing of tissues in MRONJ patients.

50. Zinc Inhibits the GABAAR/ATPase during Postnatal Rat Development: The Role of Cysteine Residue

Zinc ions (Zn2+) are concentrated in various brain regions and can act as a neuromodulator, targeting a wide spectrum of postsynaptic receptors and enzymes. Zn2+ inhibits the GABAARs, and its potency is profoundly affected by the subunit composition and neuronal developmental stage. Although the extracellular amino acid residues of the receptor’s hetero-oligomeric structure are preferred for Zn2+ binding, there are intracellular sites that, in principle, could coordinate its potency. However, their role in modulating the receptor function during postembryonic development remains unclear. The GABAAR possesses an intracellular ATPase that enables the energy-dependent anion transport via a pore. Here, we propose a mechanistic and molecular basis for the inhibition of intracellular GABAAR/ATPase function by Zn2+ in neonatal and adult rats. The enzymes within the scope of GABAAR performance as Cl−ATPase and then as Cl−, HCO3−ATPase form during the first week of postnatal rat development. In addition, we have shown that the Cl−ATPase form belongs to the β1 subunit, whereas the β3 subunit preferably possesses the Cl−, HCO3−ATPase activity. We demonstrated that a Zn2+ with variable efficacy inhibits the GABAAR as well as the ATPase activities of immature or mature neurons. Using fluorescence recording in the cortical synaptoneurosomes (SNs), we showed a competitive association between Zn2+ and NEM in parallel changes both in the ATPase activity and the GABAAR-mediated Cl− and HCO3− fluxes. Finally, by site-directed mutagenesis, we identified in the M3 domain of β subunits the cysteine residue (C313) that is essential for the manifestation of Zn2+ potency.
