Bulk Cr2O3 is an antiferromagnetic (AFM) oxide that exhibits the magnetoelectric effect at room temperature, with neither spontaneous magnetization nor net electric polarization. These physical properties stem from a subtle competition between exchange and crystal field interactions. In this article, we exploit the symmetry breaking at the surface of Cr2O3 nanoparticles for unbalancing this delicate physical equilibrium. The emerging weak ferromagnetic signal we observe persists up to near room temperature (≈ 270 K) at which the antiferromagnetic order disappears. In addition, an exchange-bias effect, that rapidly decreases on heating from low temperature up to 30 K, is resistant to thermal disorder above 200 K. 7 pags., 4 figs., Entanglement of excitons holds great promise for the future of quantum computing, which would use individual molecular dyes as building blocks of their circuitry. Studying entangled excitonic eigenstates emerging in coupled molecular assemblies in the near-field with submolecular resolution has the potential to bring insight into the photophysics of these fascinating quantum phenomena. In contrast to far-field spectroscopies, near-field spectroscopic mapping permits direct identification of the individual eigenmodes, type of exciton coupling, including excited states otherwise inaccessible in the far field (dark states). Here we combine tip-enhanced spectromicroscopy with atomic force microscopy to inspect delocalized single-exciton states of charged molecular assemblies engineered from individual perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) molecules. Hyperspectral mapping of the eigenstates and comparison with calculated many-body optical transitions reveals a second low-lying excited state of the anion monomers and its role in the exciton entanglement within the assemblies. We demonstrate control over the exciton coupling by switching the assembly charge states. International audience; Auxins are hormones that regulate growth and development in plants. Besides plants, various microorganisms also produce auxins. Here we investigate whether and how the phytopathogenic fungus Leptosphaeria maculans biosynthesizes auxins. We characterized the auxin profile of invitro grown L.maculans. The culture was further supplied with the auxin biosynthetic-precursors tryptophan and tryptamine and gene expression and phytohormone content was analyzed. L.maculans invitro produced IAA (indole-3-acetic acid) as the predominant auxin metabolite. IAA production could be further stimulated by supplying precursors. Expression of indole-3-pyruvate decarboxylase LmIPDC2, tryptophan aminotransferase LmTAM1 and nitrilase LmNIT1 genes was mainly upregulated after adding tryptophan and correlated with IAA production, suggesting that these genes are the key components of auxin biosynthesis in L.maculans. Tryptamine acted as a potent inducer of IAA production, though a pathway independent of LmIPDC2/LmTAM1 may be involved. Despite L.maculans being a rich source of bioactive IAA, the auxin metabolic profile of host plant Brassica napus was not altered upon infection. Exogenous IAA inhibited the growth of L.maculans invitro when supplied in high concentration. Altogether, we showed that L.maculans is capable of IAA production and we have identified biosynthetic genes that were responsive to tryptophan treatment.

In an agricultural landscape, this can be accomplished by incorporating agricultural conservation practices; their incorporation can reduce surface runoff, increase infiltration, and increase the water holding capacity of a soil. Some typical agricultural conservation practices include: conservation tillage, contour farming, residue incorporation, and reducing field sizes; these efforts aim to keep both water and soil in the landscape. The incorporation of such practices has been extensively studied over the last 40 years. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was used to model two basins in the Czech Republic (one at the farm-scale and a second at the management-scale) to determine the effects of agriculture conservation practice adoption at each scale. We found that at the farm-scale, contour farming was the most effective practice at reinforcing the small water cycle, followed by residue incorporation. At the management-scale, we found that the widespread incorporation of agricultural conservation practices significantly reinforced the small water cycle, but the relative scale and spatial distribution of their incorporation were not reflected in the SWAT scenario analysis. Individual farmers should be incentivized to adopt agricultural conservation practices, as these practices can have great effects at the farm-scale. At the management-scale, the spatial distribution of agricultural conservation practice adoption was not significant in this study, implying that managers should incentivize any adoption of such practices and that the small water cycle would be reinforced regardless., The presented research has been performed within projects H2020 No. 773903 Shui, focused on water scarcity in European and Chinese cropping systems and the Grant Agency of Czech Technical University in Prague, No. SGS20/156/OHK1/3T/11.

Interplay between motion of nuclei and excitations has an important role in molecular photophysics of natural and artificial structures. Here we provide a detailed analysis of coupling between quantized librational modes (librons) and charged excited states (trions) on single phthalocyanine dyes adsorbed on a surface. By means of tip-induced electroluminescence performed with a scanning probe microscope, we identify libronic signatures in spectra of chirally adsorbed phthalocyanines and find that these signatures are absent from spectra of symmetrically adsorbed species. We create a model of the libronic coupling based on the Franck-Condon principle to simulate the spectral features. Experimentally measured librational spectra match very well the theoretically calculated librational eigenenergies and peak intensities (Franck-Condon factors). Moreover, the comparison reveals an unexpected depopulation channel for the zero libron of the excited state that can be effectively controlled by tuning the size of the nanocavity. 5 pags., 4 figs., Constant amplitude bias modulation over a broad range of microwave frequencies is a prerequisite for application in high-resolution spectroscopic techniques in a tunnel junction, e.g., electron spin resonance spectroscopy or optically detected paramagnetic resonance. Here, we present an optical method for determining the frequency-dependent magnitude of the transfer function of a dedicated high-frequency line integrated with a scanning probe microscope. The method relies on determining the energy cutoff of the plasmonic electroluminescence spectrum, which is linked to the energies of the electrons inelastically tunneling across the junction. We develop an easy-to-implement procedure for effective compensation of an radio frequency line and determination of the transfer function magnitude in the GHz range. 6 pags., 4 figs., Charged optical excitations (trions) generated by charge carrier injection are crucial for emerging optoelectronic technologies as they can be produced and manipulated by electric fields. Trions and neutral excitons can be efficiently induced in single molecules by means of tip-enhanced spectromicroscopic techniques. However, little is known of the exciton-trion dynamics at single molecule level as this requires methods permitting simultaneous subnanometer and subnanosecond characterization. Here, we investigate exciton-trion dynamics by phase fluorometry, combining radio frequency modulated scanning tunnelling luminescence with time-resolved single photon detection. We generate excitons and trions in single Zinc Phthalocyanine (ZnPc) molecules on NaCl/Ag(111), and trace the evolution of the system in the picosecond range. We explore the dependence of effective lifetimes on bias voltage and describe the conversion mechanism from neutral excitons to trions, via charge capture, as the primary pathway to trion formation. The ultimate goal is to understand how the Sun produces and controls the heliosphere, filling the Solar System and driving the planetary environments. With six remote-sensing and four in-situ instrument suites, the coordination and planning of the operations are essential to address the following four top-level science questions: (1) What drives the solar wind and where does the coronal magnetic field originate?; (2) How do solar transients drive heliospheric variability?; (3) How do solar eruptions produce energetic particle radiation that fills the heliosphere?; (4) How does the solar dynamo work and drive connections between the Sun and the heliosphere? Maximising the mission's science return requires considering the characteristics of each orbit, including the relative position of the spacecraft to Earth (affecting downlink rates), trajectory events (such as gravitational assist manoeuvres), and the phase of the solar activity cycle. Furthermore, since each orbit's science telemetry will be downloaded over the course of the following orbit, science operations must be planned at mission level, rather than at the level of individual orbits. It is important to explore the way in which those science questions are translated into an actual plan of observations that fits into the mission, thus ensuring that no opportunities are missed. First, the overarching goals are broken down into specific, answerable questions along with the required observations and the so-called Science Activity Plan (SAP) is developed to achieve this. The SAP groups objectives that require similar observations into Solar Orbiter Observing Plans, resulting in a strategic, top-level view of the optimal opportunities for science observations during the mission lifetime. This allows for all four mission goals to be addressed. In this paper, we introduce Solar Orbiter's SAP through a series of examples and the strategy being followed. © 2020 ESO., Solar Orbiter is a space mission of international collaboration between ESA and NASA with contributions from national agencies of ESA member states. Open Access.--This article belongs to the Special Issue Remote Sensing of Clouds, All-sky imaging systems are currently very popular. They are used in ground-based meteorological stations and as a crucial part of the weather monitors for autonomous robotic telescopes. Data from all-sky imaging cameras provide important information for controlling meteorological stations and telescopes, and they have specific characteristics different from widely-used imaging systems. A particularly promising and useful application of all-sky cameras is for remote sensing of cloud cover. Post-processing of the image data obtained from all-sky imaging cameras for automatic cloud detection and for cloud classification is a very demanding task. Accurate and rapid cloud detection can provide a good way to forecast weather events such as torrential rainfalls. However, the algorithms that are used must be specifically calibrated on data from the all-sky camera in order to set up an automatic cloud detection system. This paper presents an assessment of a modified k-means++ color-based segmentation algorithm specifically adjusted to the WILLIAM (WIde-field aLL-sky Image Analyzing Monitoring system) ground-based remote all-sky imaging system for cloud detection. The segmentation method is assessed in two different color-spaces (L*a*b and XYZ). Moreover, the proposed algorithm is tested on our public WMD database (WILLIAM Meteo Database) of annotated all-sky image data, which was created specifically for testing purposes. The WMD database is available for public use. In this paper, we present a comparison of selected color-spaces and assess their suitability for the cloud color segmentation based on all-sky images. In addition, we investigate the distribution of the segmented cloud phenomena present on the all-sky images based on the color-spaces channels. The density and type of dislocations were studied in a plastically deformed long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase of a MgYZn (at.%) alloy. The volume fraction of the LPSO phase was as high as ∼85%. The plastic deformation was carried out by uniaxial compression up to the strain of ∼25% in both as-cast and extruded states. The order of magnitude of the dislocation density was ∼10 m after compression to the strain of ∼25% for both as-cast and extruded materials. It was also found that most of the dislocations formed in the LPSO phase during extrusion and compression were of -type. The as-cast sample did not exhibit a strong crystallographic texture, but extrusion caused a texture in which the normal vector of the basal plane was perpendicular to the extrusion axis. The texture developed during extrusion yielded an anisotropic evolution of the dislocation density during subsequent compression. Namely, the density of dislocations developed during compression was lower when the deformation was carried out parallel to the extrusion axis., The authors thank Prof. M. Ribosome biogenesis is a canonical hallmark of cell growth and proliferation. Here we show that execution of Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT), a migratory cellular program associated with development and tumor metastasis, is fueled by upregulation of ribosome biogenesis during G1/S arrest. This unexpected EMT feature is independent of species and initiating signal, and is accompanied by release of the repressive nucleolar chromatin remodeling complex (NoRC) from rDNA, together with recruitment of the EMT-driving transcription factor Snai1 (Snail1), RNA Polymerase I (Pol I) and the Upstream Binding Factor (UBF). EMT-associated ribosome biogenesis is also coincident with increased nucleolar recruitment of Rictor, an essential component of the EMT-promoting mammalian target of rapamycin complex 2 (mTORC2). Inhibition of rRNA synthesis in vivo differentiates primary tumors to a benign, Estrogen Receptor-alpha (ERα) positive, Rictor-negative phenotype and reduces metastasis. Lobster eye X-ray optics in the one dimensional (1D) arrangement has advantages in higher reflectivity, especially for higher energies, compared to classical two dimensional (2D) Schmidt's arrangement. One dimensional optics can determine only one direction of the incoming beam. There is placed a strip in front of the optics for determining of the second direction. This strip is made of X-ray proof material which blocks the incoming beam and thus causes a gap in the line. Based on these facts, it is possible to determine the position of each point source which has enough signal to gap ratio. Context. The study of non-principal axis (NPA) rotators can provide important clues to the evolution of the spin state of asteroids. However, very few studies to date have focused on NPA-rotating main belt asteroids (MBAs). One MBA known to be in an excited rotation state is asteroid (5247) Krylov. Aims. By using disk-integrated photometric data, we construct a physical model of (5247) Krylov including shape and spin state. Methods. We applied the light curve convex inversion method employing optical light curves obtained by using ground-based telescopes in three apparitions during 2006, 2016, and 2017, along with infrared light curves obtained by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer satellite in 2010. Results. Asteroid (5247) Krylov is spinning in a short axis mode characterized by rotation and precession periods of 368.7 and 67.27 h, respectively. The angular momentum vector orientation of Krylov is found to be λL = 298° and βL =-58°. The ratio of the rotational kinetic energy to the basic spin-state energy EE0 1.02 shows that the (5247) Krylov is about 2% excited state compared to the principal axis rotation state. The shape of (5247) Krylov can be approximated by an elongated prolate ellipsoid with a ratio of moments of inertia of Ia: Ib: Ic = 0.36: 0.96: 1. This is the first physical model of an NPA rotator among MBAs. Thin topological insulator (TI) films support optical and acoustic plasmonic modes characterized by effective net charge or net spin density, respectively. We combine many-body and electromagnetic calculations to study how these modes can be selectively excited at films and nanodisks at infrared and THz frequencies. We first discuss the excitation of propagating plasmons in a thin film by a point dipolar source. We emphasize how changing the distance between the dipolar source and the film allows us to control the relative strength of the acoustic and optical plasmons and thus to excite net-spin or net-charge waves on demand. The acoustic and optical modes in a nanodisk structure can be efficiently tuned by changing the size of the disk or by applying electrostatic gating. Furthermore, these modes can be confined to regions of dimensions much smaller than the wavelength. This is the first analysis of such a large sample of eccentric eclipsing binaries in our Galaxy, and has enabled us to identify several systems that are worthy of further study. Bringing together data from various databases and surveys, supplemented with new observations, we have been able to trace the long-term evolution of the eccentric orbit over durations extending back up to several decades. Our present study explores a rather different sample of stars to those presented in the previously published catalogue of eccentric eclipsing binaries, sampling to fainter magnitudes, covering later spectral types, sensitive to different orbital periods with more than 50% of our systems having periods longer than six days. The typical apsidal motion in the sample is rather slow (mostly of order of centuries long), although in some cases this is less than 50 yr. All of the systems, except one, have eccentricities less than 0.5, with an average value of 0.23. Several of the stars also show evidence for additional period variability. In particular we can identify three systems in the sample, HD 44093, V611 Pup, and HD 313631, which likely represent relativistic apsidal rotators., GJW gratefully thanks the Leverhulme Trust for financial support through a Fellowship. The interaction of the I-phase with twins during compression has been studied in a Mg-6Zn-1Y (wt.%) alloy using the combination of Synchrotron Radiation Diffraction and Acoustic Emission experiments during compression tests. The I-phase occurs as coarse particles at grain boundaries and nanosized precipitates within magnesium grains. Their interaction with twins depends on their shape and size. The presence of coarse I-phase particles with higher Young Modulus requires an additional stress for the activation of twinning since they induce tensile residual stresses in the magnesium matrix. Besides twinning, the basal and non-basal slip systems are also activated. Non-basal slip is observed after macroscopic yield stress within twins. The fine I-phase precipitates within grains interacts with the dislocations and the twins. In the latter case a back-stress arises, which acts against the compressive applied stress. International audience; Kinetoplastid flagellates comprise basal mostly free-living bodonids and derived obligatory parasitic trypanosomatids, which belong to the best-studied protists. Due to their omnipresence in aquatic environments and soil, the bodonids are of ecological significance. Here, we present the first global survey of marine kinetoplastids and compare it with the strikingly different patterns of abundance and diversity in their sister clade, the diplonemids. Based on analysis of 18S rDNA V9 ribotypes obtained from 124 sites sampled during the Tara Oceans expedition, our results show generally low to moderate abundance and diversity of planktonic kinetoplastids. Although we have identified all major kinetoplastid lineages, 98% of kinetoplastid reads are represented by neobodonids, namely specimens of the Neobodo and Rhynchomonas genera, which make up 59% and 18% of all reads, respectively. Most kinetoplastids have small cell size (0.8-5 mu m) and tend to be more abundant in the mesopelagic as compared to the euphotic zone. Some of the most abundant operational taxonomic units have distinct geographical distributions, and three novel putatively parasitic neobodonids were identified, along with their potential hosts.

Evolution of the dislocation structure in Mg97Y7Zn5 (at. %) alloy having long period stacking ordered (LPSO) structure was studied during compression tests. Two materials, an as-cast and an extruded one were deformed up to the applied strain of ~25%. The evolution of the crystallite size, the dislocation density and the population of the particular slip systems were determined by the evaluation of the X-ray diffraction peak profiles. A very low dislocation density with the order of magnitude 1012–1013 m−2 was detected in the compressed specimens. This dislocation density did not increase considerably with increasing strain. At the same time, a significant decrease of the crystallite size occurred during compression. These observations can be explained by the arrangement of dislocations into low energy dipolar configurations, such as kink walls, which do not contribute to the dislocation density measurable by X-ray diffraction peak profile analysis, however they yield a fragmentation of the crystallites., The authors are grateful for the support of the Czech Grant Agency under grant Nr. 16-12075S. [Objective]: Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum (TPA) is the causative agent of syphilis. Genetic analyses of TPA reference strains and human clinical isolates have revealed two genetically distinct groups of syphilis-causing treponemes, called Nichols-like and SS14-like groups. So far, no genetic intermediates, i.e. strains containing a mixed pattern of Nichols-like and SS14-like genomic sequences, have been identifed. Recently, Sun et al. (Oncotarget 2016. https://doi. org/10.18632/oncotarget.10154) described a new “phylogenetic group” (called Lineage 2) among Chinese TPA strains. This lineage exhibited a “mosaic genomic structure” of Nichols-like and SS14-like lineages., [Results]: We reanalyzed the primary sequencing data (Project Number PRJNA305961) from the Sun et al. publication with respect to the molecular basis of Lineage 2. While Sun et al. based the analysis on several selected genomic single nucleotide variants (SNVs) and a subset of highly variable but phylogenetically poorly informative genes, which may confound the phylogenetic analysis, our reanalysis primarily focused on a complete set of whole genomic SNVs. THESEUS is a space mission concept aimed at exploiting Gamma-Ray Bursts for investigating the early Universe and at providing a substantial advancement of multi-messenger and time-domain astrophysics. These goals will be achieved through a unique combination of instruments allowing GRB and X-ray transient detection over a broad field of view (more than 1sr) with 0.5¿1 arcmin localization, an energy band extending from several MeV down to 0.3¿keV and high sensitivity to transient sources in the soft X-ray domain, as well as on-board prompt (few minutes) follow-up with a 0.7¿m class IR telescope with both imaging and spectroscopic capabilities. THESEUS will be perfectly suited for addressing the main open issues in cosmology such as, e.g., star formation rate and metallicity evolution of the inter-stellar and intra-galactic medium up to redshift 10, signatures of Pop III stars, sources and physics of re-ionization, and the faint end of the galaxy luminosity function. In addition, it will provide unprecedented capability to monitor the X-ray variable sky, thus detecting, localizing, and identifying the electromagnetic counterparts to sources of gravitational radiation, which may be routinely detected in the late ¿20s/early ¿30s by next generation facilities like aLIGO/ aVirgo, eLISA, KAGRA, and Einstein Telescope. Tick-induced allergy to red meat is associated with anti-α-Gal IgE antibody levels. We propose that tick salivary prostaglandin E2 triggers antibody class switching in mature B cells, increasing the levels of anti-α-Gal IgE antibodies. International audience; Cytokinin ribosides (N6-substituted adenosines) have demonstrated anticancer activity in various cultured cell lines, several xenografts and even a small clinical trial. Effects of kinetin riboside, N6-benzyladenosine (BAR) and N6-isopentenyladenosine on various parameters related to apoptosis have also been reported, but not directly compared with those of the highly active naturally occurring aromatic cytokinins oTR (ortho-topolin riboside) and 2OH3MeOBAR (N6-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzyl)adenosine). Here we show that 2OH3MeOBAR is the most active cytokinin riboside studied to date (median, 1st quartile, 3rd quartile and range of GI50 in tests with the NCI60 cell panel: 0.19, 0.10, 0.43 and 0.02 to 15.7 μM, respectively) and it differs from other cytokinins by inducing cell death without causing pronounced ATP depletion. Analysis of NCI60 test data suggests that its activity is independent of p53 status. Further we demonstrate that its 5'-monophosphate, the dominant cancer cell metabolite, inhibits the candidate oncogene DNPH1. Synthesis, purification, HPLC-MS identification and HPLC-UV quantification of 2OH3MeOBAR metabolites are also reported.

International audience; All eukaryotic genomes encode multiple members of the heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) family, which evolved distinctive structural and functional features in response to specific environmental constraints. Phylogenetic analysis of this protein family thus can inform on genetic and molecular mechanisms that drive species-specific environmental adaptation. Here we use the eukaryotic pathogen Leishmania spp. as a model system to investigate the evolution of the HSP70 protein family in an early-branching eukaryote that is prone to gene amplification and adapts to cytotoxic host environments by stress-induced and chaperone-dependent stage differentiation. Combining phylogenetic and comparative analyses of trypanosomatid genomes, draft genome of Paratrypanosoma and recently published genome sequences of 204 L. donovani field isolates, we gained unique insight into the evolutionary dynamics of the Leishmania HSP70 protein family. We provide evidence for (i) significant evolutionary expansion of this protein family in Leishmania through gene amplification and functional specialization of highly conserved canonical HSP70 members, (ii) evolution of trypanosomatid-specific, non-canonical family members that likely gained ATPase-independent functions, and (iii) loss of one atypical HSP70 member in the Trypanosoma genus. Finally, we reveal considerable copy number variation of canonical cytoplasmic HSP70 in highly related L. donovani field isolates, thus identifying this locus as a potential hot spot of environment-genotype interaction. Our data draw a complex picture of the genetic history of HSP70 in trypanosomatids that is driven by the remarkable plasticity of the Leishmania genome to undergo massive intra-chromosomal gene amplification to compensate for the absence of regulated transcriptional control in these parasites.
