Exposure to nanoparticles is inevitable as they become widely used in industry, cosmetics, and foods. However, knowledge of their (patho)physiological effects on biological entry routes of the human body and their underlying molecular mechanisms is still fragmented. Here, we examined the molecular effects of amorphous silica nanoparticles (aSiNPs) on cell lines mimicking the alveolar-capillary barrier of the lung. After state-of-the-art characterization of the used aSiNPs and the cell model, we performed cell viability-based assays and a protein analysis to determine the aSiNP-induced cell toxicity and underlying signaling mechanisms. We revealed that aSiNPs induce apoptosis in a dose-, time-, and size-dependent manner. aSiNP-induced toxicity involves the inhibition of pro-survival pathways, such as PI3K/AKT and ERK signaling, correlating with reduced expression of the anti-apoptotic protein Survivin on the protein and transcriptional levels. Furthermore, induced Survivin overexpression mediated resistance against aSiNP-toxicity. Thus, we present the first experimental evidence suggesting Survivin as a critical cytoprotective resistor against silica-based nanotoxicity, which may also play a role in responses to other NPs. Although Survivin's relevance as a biomarker for nanotoxicity needs to be demonstrated in vivo, our data give general impetus to investigate the pharmacological modulation of Survivin's functions to attenuate the harmful effects of acute or chronic inhalative NP exposure. Simple Summary: Individuals with hematological diseases are particularly susceptible to COVID-19, and their vaccination has been a priority since the beginning of the pandemic. However, due to the disease itself or the treatment they receive, the protection achieved after vaccination may not be protected from severe forms of COVID-19. In this study, we analyzed the characteristics of the immune response developed by individuals with hematological cancer who received a stem cell transplant to overcome their disease after receiving the full vaccination schedule. All participants showed reduced levels of antibodies in plasma, but the cellular response of individuals with an autologous transplant was very similar to healthy donors, while it was severely impaired in individuals who received the transplant from other individuals (allogeneic). Interestingly, the transplant did not affect the immune response against SARS-CoV-2, and most infections reported after the transplant were mild, proving that some level of protection was preserved after the transplant. The high morbimortality due to SARS-CoV-2 infection in oncohematological diseases (OHD) and hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients in the pre-vaccine era has made vaccination a priority in this group. After HSCT, the immune responses against common vaccines such as tetanus, varicella, rubella, and polio may be lost. However, the loss of immunity developed by COVID-19 vaccination after HSCT has not been completely defined. In this study, both humoral and cellular immunity against SARS-CoV-2 were analyzed in 29 individuals with OHD who were vaccinated before receiving allogeneic (n = 11) or autologous (n = 18) HSCT. All participants had low but protective levels of neutralizing IgGs against SARS-CoV-2 after HSCT despite B-cell lymphopenia and immaturity. Although antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity was impaired, direct cellular cytotoxicity was similar to healthy donors in participants with autologous-HSCT, in contrast to individuals with allogeneic–HSCT, which severely deteriorated. No significant changes were observed in the immune response before and after HSCT. During follow-up, all reported post-HSCT SARS-CoV-2 infections were mild. This data emphasizes that COVID-19 vaccination is effective, necessary, and safe for individuals with OHD and also supports the persistence of some degree of immune protection after HSCT, at least in the short term, when patients cannot yet be revaccinated. Simple Summary: Anti-CD20 treatments produce a prolonged B-cell aplasia that is responsible for a suboptimal humoral response after vaccination against SARS-CoV-2, even months after receiving therapy. However, there is scarce information on the cellular immune response. In this study, we analyzed both cellular and humoral immune responses against SARS-CoV-2 in 18 patients treated with rituximab after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine booster dose. These studies are essential to design an efficient vaccination schedule for these individuals. Although we did not observe a significant benefit in the cellular immune response, there was an increase in the humoral response after the booster dose in rituximab-treated patients in comparison with the response after the second dose, likely due to a longer period of time since the last treatment with rituximab (9.6 versus 13.8 months, respectively). This excellent humoral response was observed even with reduced levels of total B cells, and it was likely responsible for the prevention of severe disease in individuals who acquired a breakthrough infection. The humoral immune response developed after receiving the full vaccination schedule against COVID-19 is impaired in individuals who received anti-CD20 therapy 6–9 months before vaccination. However, there is little information about the cellular immune responses elicited in these individuals. In this study, we analyzed the humoral and cellular immune responses in 18 individuals with hematological disease who received the last dose of rituximab 13.8 months (IQR 9.4–19) before the booster dose. One month after receiving the booster dose, the seroconversion rate in the rituximab-treated cohort increased from 83.3% to 88.9% and titers of specific IgGs against SARS-CoV-2 increased 1.53-fold (p = 0.0098), while the levels of neutralizing antibodies increased 3.03-fold (p = 0.0381). However, the cytotoxic activity of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from rituximab-treated individuals remained unchanged, and both antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) and direct cellular cytotoxicity (CDD) were reduced 1.7-fold (p = 0.0047) and 2.0-fold (p = 0.0086), respectively, in comparison with healthy donors. Breakthrough infections rate was higher in our cohort of rituximab-treated individuals (33.33%), although most of the infected patients (83.4%) developed a mild form of COVID-19. In conclusion, our findings confirm a benefit in the humoral, but not in the cellular, immune response in rituximab-treated individuals after receiving a booster dose of an mRNA-based vaccine against COVID-19. Individuals with oncohematological diseases (OHD) may develop an impaired immune response against vaccines due to the characteristics of the disease or to its treatment. Humoral response against SARS-CoV-2 has been described to be suboptimal in these patients, but the quality and efficiency of the cellular immune response has not been yet completely characterized. In this study, we analyzed the early humoral and cellular immune responses in individuals with different OHD after receiving one dose of an authorized vaccine against SARS-CoV-2. Humoral response, determined by antibodies titers and neutralizing capacity, was overall impaired in individuals with OHD, except for the cohort of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), which showed higher levels of specific IgGs than healthy donors. Conversely, the specific direct cytotoxic cellular immunity response (DCC) against SARS-CoV-2, appeared to be enhanced, especially in individuals with CML and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). This increased cellular immune response, developed earlier than in healthy donors, showed a modest cytotoxic activity that was compensated by significantly increased numbers, likely due to the disease or its treatment. Background: Melanoma is a common and malignant cutaneous tumor, which is responsible for a large proportion of skin cancer deaths. Dendritic cell (DC)-based vaccines have achieved positive results in the treatment of melanoma because of their ability to induce cytotoxic response to facilitate tumor elimination. Objective: To improve the efficacy of dendritic cell-based vaccines by the adjuvant activity of Helicobacter pylori neutrophil activating protein (HP-NAP), which is a virulence factor of Helicobacter pylori, has been proved as a TLR agonist with effective immunomodulatory activity. Methods: The recombinant HP-NAP (rHP-NAP) was expressed by using prokaryotic expression system. Dendritic cells (DCs) were cultured with granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and IL-4. After treating with rHP-NAP, the maturation of DCs and dendritic cell-based vaccine were assayed by using flow cytometry and qRT-PCR. The activation and proliferation of T cells were measured by FCM, ELISA and MTT methods. The tumor specific cytotoxic response to resistant B16F10 was detected by using lactate dehydrogenase-release assay and qRT-PCR. Results: The recombinant HP-NAP (rHP-NAP), prepared from E. coli prokaryotic expression system, was able to significantly promote the maturation of dendritic cell-based vaccine loaded with tumor cell lysate (TCL) of B16F10 (DC-B16F10-TCL). Furthermore, it effectively induced the activation and proliferation of T cells and tumor specific cytotoxic response to resistant B16F10 melanoma tumor cells. Conclusion: These results suggested that rHP-NAP possesses the potential for use as an adjuvant of dendritic cell-based vaccine in anti-melanoma treatment.

Although these findings were to some extent demonstrated also following bortezomib treatment, a more pronounced cytotoxic polarization was shown after exposure to autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) and Lenalidomide (Len) treatment. As a matter of fact, samples of patients who received ASCT (n=110) and Len (n=118) were characterized, towards untreated patients (n=138 and n=130, respectively), by higher levels of CD8+ (p<0.0001 and p<0.0001, respectively), CD8+/DR+ (p=0.0252 and p=0.0001, respectively) and CD3+/CD57+ cells (p<0.0001 and p=0.0006, respectively) and lower levels of CD4+ lymphocytes (p<0.0001 and p=0.0005, respectively). We demonstrated that active MM patients are characterized by a relevant T cell modulation and that most of these changes are therapy-related. Current Myeloma treatments, notably ASCT and Len treatments, polarize immune system towards a dominant cytotoxic response, likely contributing to the anti-Myeloma effect of these regimens. Infection by novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 causes different presentations of COVID-19 and some patients may progress to a critical, fatal form of the disease that requires their admission to ICU and invasive mechanical ventilation. In order to predict in advance which patients could be more susceptible to develop a critical form of COVID-19, it is essential to define the most adequate biomarkers. In this study, we analyzed several parameters related to the cellular immune response in blood samples from 109 patients with different presentations of COVID-19 who were recruited in Hospitals and Primary Healthcare Centers in Madrid, Spain, during the first pandemic peak between April and June 2020. Hospitalized patients with the most severe forms of COVID-19 showed a potent inflammatory response that was not translated into an efficient immune response. Despite the high levels of effector cytotoxic cell populations such as NK, NKT and CD8+ T cells, they displayed immune exhaustion markers and poor cytotoxic functionality against target cells infected with pseudotyped SARS-CoV-2 or cells lacking MHC class I molecules. Moreover, patients with critical COVID-19 showed low levels of the highly cytotoxic TCRγδ+ CD8+ T cell subpopulation. Conversely, CD4 count was greatly reduced in association to high levels of Tregs, low plasma IL-2 and impaired Th1 differentiation. The relative importance of these immunological parameters to predict COVID-19 severity was analyzed by Random Forest algorithm and we concluded that the most important features were related to an efficient cytotoxic response. Therefore, efforts to fight against SARS-CoV-2 infection should be focused not only to decrease the disproportionate inflammatory response, but also to elicit an efficient cytotoxic response against the infected cells and to reduce viral replication.

Bovine herpesvirus-1 (BoHV-1) uses many mechanisms to elude the immune system; one of them is spreading intracellularly, even in the presence of specific antiviral antibodies. Cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) are necessary to eliminate the virus. The main preventive strategy is vaccination based on inactivated virus. These vaccines are poor inducers of cellular immune responses, and complicate serological diagnosis and determination of the real prevalence of infection. DNA vaccines are a good option because of the capacity of Differentiating Infected from Vaccinated Animals—(DIVA vaccine)—and may be the best way to induce cytotoxic responses. Although this type of vaccines leads to only weak "in vivo" expression and poor immune responses, incorporation of molecular and/or chemical adjuvants can improve the latter, both in magnitude and in direction. In this study, we have investigated the specific immune responses elicited in mice by DNA vaccines based on the BoHV-1 glycoprotein D (pCIgD) with and without two different adjuvants: a plasmid encoding for murine CD40L (pCD40L) or Montanide™ 1113101PR (101). Mice vaccinated with pCIgD+CD40L, pCIgD+101, and pCIgD+CD40L+101 developed significantly higher specific antibody titers against BoHV-1 than the pCIgD group (p < 0.01). The animals vaccinated with pCgD+pCD40L+101 raised significantly higher levels of IgG2a and IgG2b (p < 0.01 and p < 0.001, respectively) than mice vaccinated with pCIgD alone. On the contrary, when the activity of CTL against cells infected with BoHV-1 was measured, the vaccine pCgD+pCD40L+101 induced significantly higher levels of cytotoxicity activity (p < 0.001) than pCIgD alone. A significant increase in the CD4+ populations in the group receiving pCIgD+CD40L+101 in comparison with the pCIgD group was observed and, also, interferon gamma, interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-17A levels were higher. Considering the results obtained from this study for humoral and cellular responses in mice, the inclusion of pCD40L and 101 as adjuvants in a BoHV-1 DNA vaccine for cattle is highly recommendable. Recent studies have demonstrated that these Neanderthal variants influence a range of clinically important traits and diseases. Thus, understanding the genetic factors responsible for the variability in individual response to drug or chemical exposure is a key goal of pharmacogenomics and toxicogenomics, as dose responses are clinically and epidemiologically important traits. It is well established that ethnic and racial differences are important in dose response traits, but to our knowledge the influence of Neanderthal ancestry on response to xenobiotics is unknown. Towards this aim, we examined if Neanderthal ancestry plays a role in cytotoxic response to anti-cancer drugs and toxic environmental chemicals. We identified common Neanderthal variants in lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs) derived from the globally diverse 1000 Genomes Project and Caucasian cell lines from the Children’s Hospital of Oakland Research Institute. We analyzed the effects of these Neanderthal alleles on cytotoxic response to 29 anti-cancer drugs and 179 environmental chemicals at varying concentrations using genome-wide data. We identified and replicated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from these association results, including a SNP in the SNORD-113 cluster. Our results also show that the Neanderthal alleles cumulatively lead to increased sensitivity to both the anti-cancer drugs and the environmental chemicals. Our results demonstrate the influence of Neanderthal ancestry-informative markers on cytotoxic response. These results could be important in identifying biomarkers for personalized medicine or in dissecting the underlying etiology of dose response traits.

Tannic acid (TA) portrays a myriad of beneficial properties and has forthwith achieved incessant significance for its cytoprotective qualities in traditional and modern-day medicine. However, TA displays an ambiguous nature demonstrating anti-oxidant and pro-oxidant traits, beckoning further research. Although vast literature on the anti-proliferative effects of TA on cancer cell lines exist, the effects on normal cells remain unchartered. Herein, the cytoproliferative and anti-oxidant effects induced by TA in human embryonic kidney (Hek-293) cells were investigated. Data obtained from the 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay demonstrated that TA increased the cell viability and cellular proliferation rate at higher concentrations. Hoechst assay, examining proliferation marker Ki67 supported these findings. DNA fragmentation and oxidative stress-inducers were specifically noted at IC25 and IC50 treatments via biochemical assays. This alluded to TA’s pro-oxidant characteristics. However, the countervailing anti-oxidant defence mechanisms as the endogenous anti-oxidants and phase2 detoxification enzymes were significantly upregulated. Luminometry fortified the anti-oxidant capacity of TA, whereby executioner caspase-3/7 were not activated subservient to the activation of initiator caspases-8 and -9. Thus, proving that TA has anti-apoptotic traits, inter alia. Therefore, TA proved to harbour anti-oxidant, anti-apoptotic, and proliferative effects in Hek-293 cells with its partial cytotoxic responses being outweighed by its cytoprotective mechanisms.

Jorge Lobo's Disease (JLD) is a cutaneous chronic granulomatous disease caused by the pathogenic fungus Lacazia loboi. It is characterized by a granulomatous reaction with multinucleated giant cells and high number of fungal cells. In order to contribute to the comprehension of immune mechanisms in JLD human lesions, we studied the cytotoxic immune response, focusing on TCD8+ and NK cells, and granzyme B. Forty skin biopsies of lower limbs were selected and an immunohistochemistry protocol was developed to detect CD8+ T cells, NK cells and Granzyme B. In order to compare the cellular populations, we also performed a protocol to visualize TCD4+ cells. Immunolabeled cells were quantified in nine randomized fields in the dermis. Lesions were characterized by inflammatory infiltrate of macrophages, lymphocytes, epithelioid and multinucleated giant cells with intense number of fungal forms. There was a prevalence of CD8 over CD4 cells, followed by NK cells. Our results suggest that in JLD the cytotoxic immune response could represent another important mechanism to control Lacazia loboi infection. We may suggest that, although CD4+ T cells are essential for host defense in JLD, CD8+ T cells could play a role in the elimination of the fungus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Silicon pthalocyanines (SiPcs), a class of macrocylic fused ring with 18 π-electrons system, are emerging as a wonder class of compounds in anti-cancer treatment due to their role as photosensitizers (PS) in photodynamic therapy (PDT) and as cytotoxic agent. By directing specific accumulation of SiPcs at the tumor site and initiation of destructive response only post application of irradiation of desired wavelength, a complete control over the course of treatment is achieved. Following certain modifications like incorporation of antibody drug conjugates, use of sonodynamic therapy together with PDT (SPDT) are getting introduced in this mode of treatment. They also possess appreciable topoisomerase inhibitory property and DNA intercalation property at tumor site post localization as a part of their cytotoxic response. Keeping an eye on the growing cancer burden and the advantages of SiPc derivatives, the latter may emerge as potential compounds in anti-cancer treatment in coming years. Abstract: It is well documented that adjuvants improve the immune response generated by traditional viral vaccines; however, less is known about their effects on the immune response elicited by DNA vaccines. In this study, we have investigated the use of adjuvants, and have analyzed the humoral and cellular specific immune responses elicited by DNA vaccines based on the BoHV-1 glycoprotein D (secreted version) in pCIneo vector with and without Montanide ISA25 (O/W), ISA206 VG (SEPPIC) and Cliptox™ (natural microparticles of clinoptilolite). The comparison of the immune response induced in mice by pCIgD formulated with or without adjuvants showed that the immunomodulators affect the total specific humoral and cellular response. The isotypes induced by these adjuvants were of the type Th1/Th2. A significant increase in the mac-3+ and F4/80+ populations of the groups receiving pCIneo with ISA25, ISA206; and an increase in CD4+ populations of the group receiving pCIneo ISA25, in comparison with the pCIneo group was observed. On the other hand, mice vaccinated with pCIgD/ISA25, pCIgD/ISA206, or pCIgD/Cliptox developed a significantly higher specific cytotoxic activity against BoHV-1 than the pCIgD and pCIneo groups. In this report we propose the use of ISA25, ISA206 or Cliptox as adjuvants in a DNA vaccine since they are able to induce not only a specific humoral immune response but also a specific cellular immune response. Abstract: The risk of mortality is high in burn patients and correlates with age, burn area extent, and sepsis. Immunosuppression has been reported to occur after severe burn. Cytotoxic cells possess specialized granules containing perforin and a group of serine proteases (granzymes). Granzyme A is a serine protease constitutively expressed by γδ and NK cells, in agreement with their functional cytolytic potential. In vitro studies have shown that GrA may be released extracellularly during cytotoxic cell degranulation, indicating the activation of cytotoxic cells. The aim of our study was to determine plasma GrA activity in burned patients and to verify if decreased GrA levels were associated with poor prognosis. Specific GrA activity was tested in the plasma of burned and healthy subjects by esterase assay. Plasma GrA was significantly decreased in septic rather than in nonseptic burn patients and in healthy subjects (p <0.05 and p <0.001, respectively). At day 3 plasma GrA was significantly lower in nonsurvivor than in survivor septic patients (p <0.05). The value of 91mOD showed a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 84% in differentiating survivor from nonsurvivor septic patients. Because this is a retrospective study, Granzyme A is not a confirmed predictor of septic outcome after burn, but its determination could give useful information about the development and severity of sepsis. Abstract: In order to study the effects of the fermentation-drying procedure and subsequent in vitro digestion on Shiga toxins (Stx) production by Escherichia coli O157:H7, dry sausages were inoculated during the formulation step with pure cultures of strains 5-1 and ATCC 43895. The inoculated sausages were submitted to a minimum (30min, pH between 3.1 and 3.5) or a maximum (120min at stepwise adjusting the pH downward) gastric challenge followed by a 240-min pancreatic challenge at pH 8.0 and 37°C. Production of toxins by the overnight culture controls, assessed using the Vero cell assay, was dependent on the pathogen cell concentration. The effect of cell concentration was not relevant in sausage samples and data showed: (a) higher Stx production in contaminated sausage samples than in overnight cultures; (b) the lowest Stx levels were detected with undigested sausage samples; (c) the maximum gastric challenge enhanced Stx production, compared to minimally digested and undigested samples. Reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) performed on extracts from inoculated, digested (4.5–6h process) and undigested sausages produced amplicons for both stx1 and stx2 mRNA, suggesting that post-stress expression of stx genes had occurred. Our data suggest that sub-lethal stresses imposed by the fermentation-drying procedure and subsequent digestion of ingested food (i.e. contaminated sausages) may affect the degree to which the surviving E. coli O157:H7 cells express their virulence in vivo. Abstract: Virus-like particle (VLP)-based vaccines have provided highly encouraging results in clinical trials while, in contrast, DNA vaccines expressing non-particulate proteins have proven less successful. Seeking to combine the immunogenicity of VLPs and the ease of production of plasmid DNA, we designed DNA vaccines expressing VLPs consisting of the MLV Gag and modified MLV Env proteins displaying T cell epitopes. We show here that such DNA vaccines are remarkably efficient immunogens for inducing cellular immune responses. In contrast to similar plasmids harboring a point mutation preventing VLP formation, they induce protection against a lethal viral challenge in mice. Abstract: The cytotoxicity of certain Cr(III) complexes, such as [Cr(salen)(H2O)2]+, [Cr(edta)(H2O)]−, [Cr(en)3]3+, [Cr(ox)3]3−, [Cr(pic)3], and CrCl3, which differ in ionic character and ligand environment in human dermal skin fibroblasts, has been studied. After 72 h of exposure to 100 μM doses of chromium(III) complexes, the order in which the complexes had an inhibitory effect on cell viability was [Cr(en)3]3+ > [Cr(salen)(H2O)2]+ > [Cr(ox)3]3− > [Cr(edta)(H2O)]− > [Cr(pic)3] > CrCl3. Based on viability studies it was confirmed that [Cr(en)3]3+, a triply charged cation, inhibits cell proliferation, and therefore, it was chosen to carry out further investigations. [Cr(en)3]3+, at a dose of 50 μM, was found to bring about surface morphological changes, evidenced by cellular blebbing and spike formation accompanied by nuclear damage. TEM analysis revealed substantial intracellular damage to fibroblasts in terms of the formation of apoptotic bodies and chromatin condensation, thus reflecting cell death. FACS analysis further revealed DNA damage by formation of a sub-G1 peak with 84.2% DNA as aneuploid DNA and arrest of the G2 / M phase of the cell cycle. Cellular DNA damage was confirmed by agarose gel electrophoresis with the characteristic appearance of a DNA streak in DNA isolated from [Cr(en)3]3+-treated fibroblasts. The proposed mechanism suggests the plausible role of Cr(V), formed as a result of oxidation of Cr(III) by cellular oxidative enzymes, in the cytotoxic response. Consequently, any Cr(III) complex that is absorbed by cells and can be oxidized to Cr(V) must be considered a potential carcinogen. This has potential implications for the increased use of Cr(III) complexes as dietary supplements and highlights the need to consider the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of a variety of Cr(III) complexes and to understand the potential hazards of Cr(III) complexes encountered in research laboratories. Tannic acid (TA) portrays a myriad of beneficial properties and has forthwith achieved incessant significance for its cytoprotective qualities in traditional and modern-day medicine. However, TA displays an ambiguous nature demonstrating anti-oxidant and pro-oxidant traits, beckoning further research. Although vast literature on the anti-proliferative effects of TA on cancer cell lines exist, the effects on normal cells remain unchartered. Herein, the cytoproliferative and anti-oxidant effects induced by TA in human embryonic kidney (Hek-293) cells were investigated. Data obtained from the 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay demonstrated that TA increased the cell viability and cellular proliferation rate at higher concentrations. Hoechst assay, examining proliferation marker Ki67 supported these findings. DNA fragmentation and oxidative stress-inducers were specifically noted at IC25 and IC50 treatments via biochemical assays. This alluded to TA's pro-oxidant characteristics. However, the countervailing anti-oxidant defence mechanisms as the endogenous anti-oxidants and phase2 detoxification enzymes were significantly upregulated. Luminometry fortified the anti-oxidant capacity of TA, whereby executioner caspase-3/7 were not activated subservient to the activation of initiator caspases-8 and -9. Thus, proving that TA has anti-apoptotic traits, inter alia. Therefore, TA proved to harbour anti-oxidant, anti-apoptotic, and proliferative effects in Hek-293 cells with its partial cytotoxic responses being outweighed by its cytoprotective mechanisms.
