Weed control in perennial crops is especially difficult in the first phases of crop establishment. Hydromulch is a pasty blend that hardens after application and has so far been used specifically for weed control for experimental purposes only. In this work we tested blends based on recycled paper, gypsum and lignocellulosic materials (wheat straw, rice husk and used mushroom substrate) applied in three different locations of Spain under peach, vine, almond and artichoke plantations compared with an untreated control, manual weeding and herbicide (only in artichoke). The most frequent weed species were annual and perennial forbs. Lower weed soil cover compared to the untreated control was still relevant between 333 and 456 days after mulching (DAM), depending on the trial. In the artichoke trial the weed control effect was similar to that obtained with herbicides until the end of the assessments. Annual forbs were satisfactorily controlled with hydromulches (highest for Lamium amplexicaule with an efficacy of 88% based on soil cover); mean efficacy of perennials such as Cyperus rotundus and Convolvulus arvensis was lower ranging between 30 and 74% efficacy depending on the trial. Multivariate analysis showed an increase in wind-dispersed species such as Conyza sp. and Lactuca serriola over time. The capacity of the mulches to reduce weed soil cover for around one year can be useful in crops where weed control is crucial during that time, such as in plant nurseries and new plantations. The enhanced efficacy of vinegar‐processed Cyperus rotundus (VCR) in treating primary dysmenorrhea (PD) has been observed. However, the active components and potential mechanisms of synergy are still unclear. The objective of this study was to develop a method that combines bionic technology, plant metabolomics and network pharmacology to discover the active components and potential mechanisms underlying the enhanced therapeutic effects of VCR for PD. Vinegar processing alters the flavor of C. rotundus, leading to changes in its properties. The acidic nature of vinegar enhances the selectivity of the medicine toward the liver, thereby improving its ability to soothe the liver, regulate qi and provide pain relief. Through gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and multivariate statistical analysis, 30 key differential components between raw C. rotundus and VCR have been screened and identified. These differential components primarily exert their therapeutic effects in treating PD by modulating targets such as interleukin‐6, TNF, TP53 and PTGS2, as well as pathways including the estrogen signaling pathway, ovarian steroidogenesis, the TNF signaling pathway and the HIF‐1 signaling pathway. The findings of this study serve as a reference for the application of VCR in compound formulas and clinic practiceal. Background and Objectives: Plant metabolites, like antimicrobial and cytotoxic effects, exhibit therapeutic benefits. The crude extract of Cyperus rotundus (CR) rhizomes demonstrates such activities; however, the specific components responsible for these functions have not been determined. This study identifies the bioactive alkaloids in CR rhizome extract. Methods: The crude methanolic extract of CR rhizomes was acidified, followed by basification. The precipitate was then purified using sequential chromatographic and high-performance liquid chromatography techniques. Structural elucidation of the derived compound was performed using the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, and mass spectroscopy. Disc dilution and diffusion assays were used to evaluate the isolated compound’s minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) against selected microbial species. The cytotoxicity of the isolated compound was determined against HeLa cancer cells using MTT cell proliferation assays. Results: Spectral analysis confirmed the presence of norrotundine-6-O-glucoside plus appreciable amounts of flavonoids nootkatone, quercetin, chlorogenic acid, catechin, and β-sitosterol. The isolated alkaloid inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus (MIC=MBC=64 µg/mL), Escherichia coli (MIC=100 µg/mL), and Candida albicans (MIC=MBC=64 µg/mL). The alkaloid’s half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) was 203.7 µg/mL. The obtained alkaloid from the CR rhizomes’ crude extract revealed bactericidal and fungicidal effects against S. aureus and C. albicans, respectively, at 64 µg/mL, bacteriostatic against E. coli at 100 µg/mL, and cytotoxic against HeLa cells at an IC50 equal to 203.7 µg/mL. Conclusion: The elucidated alkaloid from the CR rhizomes’ crude extract exhibited bactericidal and fungicidal effects against S. aureus and C. albicans, respectively, at 64 µg/mL, bacteriostatic activity against E. coli at 100 µg/mL and cytotoxicity against HeLa cells at IC50 of 203.7 µg/mL.

Here, a comprehensive strategy combining network pharmacology, molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulation and in vitro experiments was used to address this issue.Methods: The bioactive ingredients of CR were screened in TCMSP database, and the potential targets of these ingredients were obtained through Swiss Target Prediction database. Genes in OA pathogenesis were collected through GeneCards, OMIM and DisGeNET databases. Gene Ontology (GO) analysis and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis were performed using DAVID database. STRING database and Cytoscape 3.10 software were used to construct “component-target-pathway” network, and predict the core targets affected by CR. The binding affinity between bioactive components and the core targets was evaluated by molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation. The therapeutic activity of kaempferol on chondrocytes in inflammatory conditions was verified by in vitro experiments.Results: Fifteen CR bioactive ingredients were obtained, targeting 192 OA-related genes. A series of biological processes, cell components, molecular functions and pathways were predicted to be modulated by CR components. The core targets of CR in OA treatment were AKT serine/threonine kinase 1 (AKT1), interleukin 1 beta (IL1B), SRC proto-oncogene, non-receptor tyrosine kinase (SRC), BCL2 apoptosis regulator (BCL2), signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), hypoxia-inducible factor 1 subunit alpha (HIF1A), matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP9), estrogen receptor 1 (ESR1) and PPARG orthologs from vertebrates (PPARG), and the main bioactive ingredients of CR showed good binding affinity with these targets. In addition, kaempferol, one of the CR bioactive components, weakens the effects of IL-1β on the viability, apoptosis and inflammation of chondrocytes.Conclusion: Theoretically, CR has great potential to ameliorate the symptoms and progression of OA, via multiple components, multiple targets, and multiple downstream pathways. Abstract Bovine mastitis caused by infectious pathogens, mainly Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli), constitutes a major destructive challenge for the dairy industry and public health. Berberine chloride (BER) and Cyperus rotundus possess a broad spectrum of anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, and antiproliferative activities; however, their bioavailability is low. This research aimed first to prepare an ethanolic extract of Cyperus rotundus rhizomes (CRE) followed by screening its phytochemical contents, then synthesis of BER and CRE loaded chitosan nanoparticles (NPs) (BER/CH-NPs and CRE/CH-NPs), afterward, the analysis of their loading efficiency in addition to the morphological and physicochemical characterization of the formulated NPs employing Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Zeta Potential (ZP), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) assessments compared to their crude forms to evaluate the enhancement of bioavailability and stability. Isolation of bacterial strains from the milk of mastitic cows, used for induction of mammary gland (MG) inflammation in female albino rats, and a preliminary investigation of the prophylactic oral doses of the prepared NPs against S. aureus-induced mastitis in female rats. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of BER/CH-NPs and CRE/CH-NPs is 1 mg/kg b.w. BER/CH-NPs and CRE/CH-NPs alone or in combination show significant (P ≤ 0.05) DPPH radical scavenging activity (69.2, 88.5, and 98.2%, respectively) in vitro. Oral administration of BER/CH-NPs and CRE/CH-NPs to mastitis rats significantly (P ≤ 0.05) attenuated TNF-α (22.1, 28.6 pg/ml), IL-6 (33.4, 42.9 pg/ml), IL-18 (21.7, 34.7 pg/ml), IL-4 (432.9, 421.6 pg/ml), and MPO (87.1, 89.3 pg/ml) compared to mastitis group alongside the improvement of MG histopathological findings without any side effect on renal and hepatic functions. Despite promising results with BER and CRE nanoparticles, the study is limited by small-scale trials, a focus on acute administration, and partially explored nanoparticle-biological interactions, with no economic or scalability assessments. Future research should address these limitations by expanding trial scopes, exploring interactions further, extending study durations, and assessing economic and practical scalability. Field trials and regulatory compliance are also necessary to ensure practical application and safety in the dairy industry. In conclusion, the in vitro and in vivo results proved the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory efficacy of BER/CH-NPs and CRE/CH-NPs in low doses with minimal damage to the liver and kidney functions, supposing their promising uses in mastitis treatment.

Weeds cause significant yield loss in many agriculture crops; thus, management practices are urgently needed to alleviate losses while conserving environmental and human health. This study aimed to evaluate the allelopathic potential of Wedelia leaf and flower extracts on the germination and early growth stage of three plant species. The research was conducted using a completely randomized design experiment with two factors and four replicates. The first factor was extract sources: leaves (S1) and flowers (S2). The second factor was the concentration: control (C0) and extract concentrations of 1% (C1), 5% (C5), and 10% (C10). The extract was tested on three different plant species: soybean (Glycine max), nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus), and billygoat weed (Ageratum conyzoides). Fifty seeds of three different plants were germinated separately in Petri dishes and treated using Wedelia extracts. The allelochemicals in Wedelia leaf and flower extracts inhibited germination and induced abnormal sprouting. Wedelia leaf extract showed the most pronounced inhibitory effects and highest inhibition levels across all measured parameters. Moreover, a clear concentration-response relationship was observed, where increased extract concentration increased the degree of inhibition. These findings contribute to the development of bioherbicides and can help reduce the use of synthetic herbicides for more sustainable agriculture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Drying is an important step in the postharvest processing of agricultural products, as it allows the product to be preserved by reducing water activity to safe values, which stops microorganism growth and enzymatic reactions. In this context, the objective of this study was to assess how various drying temperatures, combined with ultrasonic pretreatment, affect drying rates and essential oil production. Assays were conducted according to a Central Composite Rotational Design, considering two factors with the following intervals: duration of the ultrasonic bath from 0 to 40 min, drying air temperature from 40 to 70 °C. The optimization was carried out using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The essential oil was extracted by hydrodistillation and its constituents were identified by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Histochemical analyses of fresh tubers were performed. The Midilli model was the one that best described the drying kinetics of Cyperus rotundus in all treatments. The drying time of C. rotundus tubers was dependent only on temperature (decreasing linear effect), it was possible to describe the variation in drying time as a function of temperature. It was not possible to adjust a model for ultrasonic bath time or drying temperature that would optimize both essential oil yield and the drying time of C. rotundus tubers. However, in this study, shorter drying times were observed compared to previous studies on C. rotundus tubers drying in the shade at room temperature. A total of 29 chemical constituents have been identified in the essential oil extracted from C. rotundus tubers, of which the majority are: 3,4-dimethyl-3-cyclohexen-1-carboxaldehyde (19.23%); caryophyllene oxide (17.63%); and α-cyperone (9.54%). Abstract Cyperus rotundus rhizomes have been used in longevity remedies in Thailand for nourishing good health, which led us to investigate the effect on energy homeostasis, especially glucose utilization in myotubes and adipocytes, and on inhibition of lipogenesis in adipocytes. The results showed that an ethyl acetate extract of C. rotundus rhizomes (ECR) containing 1.61%w/w piceatannol, with a half-maximal concentration of 17.76 ± 0.03 μg/mL in 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay, caused upregulation and cell-membrane translocation of glucose transporters GLUT4 and 1 in L6 myotubes but downregulation and cytoplasmic localization of GLUT4 expression in 3T3-L1 adipocytes and was related to the p-Akt/Akt ratio in both cells, especially at 100 μg/mL. Moreover, ECR (25–100 μg/mL) significantly inhibited lipid accumulation via Adenosine Monophosphate-Activated Protein Kinase (AMPK), Acetyl CoA Carboxylase (ACC), and Glycogen Synthase Kinase (GSK) pathways. Its immunoblot showed increased expression of p-AMPKα/AMPKα and p-ACC/ACC but decreased expression of p-Akt/Akt and p-GSK3β/GSK3β in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Moreover, the decreased expression of the adipogenic effectors, perilipin1 and lipoprotein lipase, in ECR-incubated adipocytes (50 and 100 μg/mL) indicated reduced de novo lipogenesis. Our study elucidated mechanisms of C. rotundus that help attenuate glucose tolerance in skeletal muscle and inhibit lipid droplet accumulation in adipose tissue.

Loam examples were gathered through the 2020-2021 rising periods, and the following measurements were made: Viable bacterial count by reducing root colonization. The outcomes of reviewing the impact of the fungicide Benomyl on development and viable microflora count revealed that the highest microbial count was in Al-Madaein 80 x10³ CFU/mL was recorded ., and the lowest count was 60 x10³ CFU/mL for the Aushtar area, The microbial viable count values for the affected microorganisms with Benomyl were decrease to 27x10³ and 65 x 10³ CFU/mL respectively. Those consequences specify that Benomyl has a robust choosiness contrary to microflora, especially when compared to the benomyl effect as folded dose, the microflora l count decreases to 25 x10³ CFU /mL in the Aushtar area and increases to 60 x10³ CFU/mL in Al-Madaein area. Whereas the study estimated the level of eight elements in soil (Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, NO3, P, K, and NH4) cultured with Cyperus rotundus L. Which mentioned the effect of benomyl on these levels after three days of treatment. Mn concentration ranged between 5.96 to 9.11 ppm, while after fungicide benomyl, it decreased to 5.63 -6.53 ppm similar results were observed for other elements. The highest affected element was Mn in the Aushtar area. Those consequences designate that Benomyl has a stout fussiness in contrast to soil nutrients. The hot plate test and writhing test were both employed to investigate the analgesic effects of Citrullus colocynthis fruit resin and Cyperus rotundus tuber resin at varying concentrations and time intervals. The hot-plate test results revealed that Citrullus colocynthis fruit resin demonstrated significant dose-dependent and time-dependent analgesic effects. In contrast, Cyperus rotundus Tuber resin did not exhibit substantial analgesic effects in the hot-plate test. In the writhing test, Citrullus colocynthis fruit resin exhibited clear dose-dependent analgesic effects at higher concentrations. Cyperus rotundus Tuber resin demonstrated significant analgesic effects in reducing writhing responses, although its efficacy was not as potent as the positive control indomethacin. These results offer insights into the potential use of these natural resins for pain management while also highlighting the importance of understanding the underlying mechanisms of their analgesic effects for further clinical applications.

Plants naturally produce phytochemicals, physiologically active chemical compounds that serve as a natural defence mechanism and have considerable potential for treating a wide range of ailments. Cyperus rotundus and Tinospora cordifolia are the potent traditional herbs used in Ayurveda medicine, especially for diabetes. The current study aimed to isolate and characterize the bioactive compound β-sitosterol from the combined ethanolic extracts of the rhizome of Cyperus rotundus (C. rotundus) and the stem of Tinospora cordifolia (T. cordifolia). Furthermore, the in vitro antioxidant and anti-diabetic activities of isolated compounds are tested by DPPH assay, alpha amylase inhibition assay, alpha glucosidase inhibition assay and glucose uptake activity in 3T3L1 cells. The combined ethanolic extract of both medicinal plants was initially subjected to column and preparative thin layer chromatography for the isolation of bioactive compounds, followed by their characterization by spectral methods like UV, FT-IR, ¹H and 13C NMR. The structure of the isolated compound is identified as β-sitosterol and further confirmed by structural elucidation. Similarly, the isolated compound β-sitosterol exhibited higher antioxidant scavenging activity of 64.54±1.38 μg/ml against DPPH at a concentration 100μg/ml. The study also confirmed that β-sitosterol showed good inhibitory activities towards alpha-amylase (62.21±1.25 μg/ml) and alpha-glucosidase (65.48±1.47 μg/ml). β-sitosterol showed significantly increased glucose uptake (28% at 100μg/ml). Based on the conclusion that the organic compound β-sitosterol exhibited good antioxidant and anti-diabetic efficacy, it could have been used in the treatment of free radical disease and can be utilized in the management of diabetes mellitus. Simple Summary: This study investigates the use of tuber extract from nut grass (Cyperus rotundus Linn.) as growth and immune boosters in aquaculture. Although C. rotundus is considered a weed of low value, it has been found to enhance growth and act as an immunostimulant in Nile tilapia. C. rotundus exhibited antimicrobial activity against S. agalactiae, resulting in increased fish survival. The study suggests that the immunostimulant properties of C. rotundus, typically regarded as a weed of low value, could serve as a value-added source in a bio-green aquaculture model, promoting fish-friendly practices for consumer health. Nut grass (Cyperus rotundus Linn.) is a weed that grows in all tropical, subtropical and temperate regions of the world, including areas where it grows on saline soil. This research was conducted to evaluate the effect of C. rotundus tuber extract in the diet on the growth performance and disease resistance of Nile tilapia. Various components of phytochemical importance of nut grass, including sugars/carbohydrates, terpenoids, tannins, and flavonoids were found in C. rotundus. Tilapia (n = 25 fish/group in triplicate) were fed with different levels of nut grass extract including 0 (control; T1), 0.4 (T2), 0.8 (T3), and 1.6 (T4) g/kg for 60 days in a completely randomized design (CRD) experiment. After the feeding trial, the highest weight gain and average daily gain (ADG) were observed in the T4 group, but it was not significantly different from T3 (Nile tilapia fed with a 0.8 g/kg) (p > 0.05). The lowest feed conversion ratio (FCR) was observed in the T3 group. Moreover, the fillet, crud lipid content, and blood chemical profiles (aspartate aminotransferase (AST), cholesterol, and malondialdehyde (MDA)) in fish fed with 1.6 g/kg were highest when compared in all groups. Abstract This study aims to evaluate the anti-cancer-related inflammation activity of Cyperus rotundus bioactive compounds. The component of C. rotundus was analyzed using LC-HRMS. The drug-likeness of all compounds were analyzed using swissADME webserver. In addition, the analysis of inhibition potential of compounds against NF-κB and iNOS were carried out using molecular docking in PyRx software. This study found 1-Nitro-2-phenoxybenzene, ethyl 4-(acetylamino)-3-phenyl-2-thioxo-2,3-dihydro-1,3-thiazole-5-carboxylate, and nootkatone passed all the parameters of drug-likeness including Lipinski, ghose, veber, egan, and muege. Based on molecular docking, verbascoside A and n-Pentyl isopentyl phthalate has the lowest binding affinity against iNOS (-10 and -8.9 kcal/mol, respectively). In addition, verbascoside A and maltopentaose have binding affinity of -7.6 and -6.6 kcal/mol, respectively, for NF-κB. The anti-cancer activity of verbascoside A, maltopentaose, and n-Pentyl isopentyl phthalate, according to PASS analysis were anti-inflammatory, antineoplastic, chemopreventive, and chemoprotectant. The cytotoxic effect prediction showed that these compounds were relatively selective to kill tumor cell but not non-tumor cell. The most common pathogens that contribute to periodontal disease include Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Candida albicans. Due to the side effects of common treatment by chlorhexidine mouthwash, novel treatments to fight such microbes are much of interest. This study aimed at comparing the antimicrobial effect of herbal mouthwash containing the extracts of nut-grass and thyme and chlorhexidine mouthwash on common periodontal pathogens. Materials and methods: First, Cyperus rotundus and Thymus vulgaris were collected, powdered, and the hydro alcoholic extract of the mixture of two plants and the methanol extract of each plant were taken. Then, a mouthwash containing combined extract of the two plants was prepared using different exipients. To evaluate the antimicrobial effect of the extracts, S. mutans, S. pyogenes, and C. albicans were used. After determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), the effect of mouthwash on S. mutans biofilm formation and degradation was investigated. Results: The MIC of the mouthwash formulation against S. mutans, S. pyogenes, and C. albicans were 0.625, 0.039, and 2.5 mg/ml, respectively. The MBC of the mouthwash for each microorganism was 1.25, 0.078, and 10 mg/ml, respectively. The herbal mouthwash significantly inhibited biofilm formation compared to the positive control (P0.05). Findings showed no significant difference in biofilm destruction between the herbal mouthwash and the positive control (P>0.05). Conclusion: The prepared herbal mouthwash showed significant antimicrobial and anti-biofilm effects, and was much more effective in preventing biofilm formation than the standard treatment by chlorhexidine.

Context: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a type of breast cancer with the highest aggressiveness and malignancy characteristics. Aims: To evaluate the possible anticancer potential of Cyperus rotundus rhizome extract (CRE) against 4T1-tumor-bearing mice. Methods: C. rotundus rhizome was extracted using maceration methods with ethanol. C. rotundus extract (CRE) was then determined the total phenolic (TPC) and flavonoid content (TFC) using colorimetric analysis. The cytotoxic activity of CRE against 4T1 cells was carried out operating WST-1 assay, and the IC50 value was then used for in vivo study. The 4T1-tumor-bearing mice were treated with CRE at 72.5, 145, and 290 mg/kg body weight (BW) for two weeks or treated with cisplatin once a week for two weeks (4 mg/kg BW). The analysis of IL-2 cytokines production and the activation of CD4 and CD8 T cells was assessed using flow cytometry analysis. Histopathological analysis with hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining was applied to determine the outcome of CRE on breast cancer tissue. Diabetes is a significant global health concern that increases the vulnerability to various chronic illnesses. In view of this issue, the current research aimed to examine the effects of administering an extract derived from the tubers of Cyperus rotundus L (CrE) on obesity, type 1 diabetes, and liver-kidney toxicity. Through the utilization of HPLC-DAD analysis, it was discovered that the extract contained several components, including quercetin (47.8%), luteolin glucoside (17%), luteolin (7.56%), apigenin-7-glucoside (6.29%), naringinin (4.52%), and seven others. In vitro experiments they have demonstrated that CrE effectively inhibited key digestive enzymes associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes, such as DPP-4, PTP1B, lipase, and α-amylase, as evidenced by their respective IC50 values are about 23, 51,83, and 67 μg/ml respectively. Furthermore, when diabetic rats were administered CrE, the activity of pancreatic enzymes linked to inflammation, namely 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO), hyaluronidase (HAase), and myeloperoxidase (MPO), was significantly suppressed by 48, 41, 75, and 47%, respectively. Moreover, CrE exhibited protective effects on pancreatic β-cells by inhibiting the formation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) by 65% and the induction of superoxide Dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activities by 62, 108, and 112% respectively as compared to diabetic untreated rat. Additionally, CrE significantly inhibited the activities of intestinal, pancreatic, and serum lipase and α-amylase activities. In diabetic rats, CrE administration suppressed glycogen phosphorylase (GP) stimulated glycogen synthase (GS) activities by 45 and 30%; and this increased liver glycogen content by 45%. Furthermore, CrE modulated key hepatic enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism, including hexokinase (HK), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), glucose-6-phosphatase (G6P), and fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase (FBP). Notably, the average food and water intake (AFI and AWI) of diabetic rats treated with CrE was reduced by 15 and 16% respectively as compared to those without any treatment. The study determined the effect of alcoholic extract of common purslane, Portulaca oleracea, Java grass, and Cyperus rotundus oil in controlling the two-spotted spider mite on okra plants. The results of laboratory experiments showed the efficiency of purslane alcoholic extract was highly toxic to adult mites, but its effect was limited on eggs. In contrast, Cyperus oil was highly effective against mite eggs and adults. Cyperus oil gave the highest mortality of 86.94%, with significant differences from the purslane extract, where 68.61% mortality was observed and differed significantly from the control treatment. An increase in mortality increased with concentration, and the highest mortality of 95.83% was achieved at 5%, compared to the mortality of 59.58% at 1% treatment. The ovicidal activity was significant after the C. rotundus oil treatment compared to the purslane extract application. Cyperus oil reduced egg hatching by 42.50%. However, purslane extract did not affect the hatching significantly (91.70% hatching) and was not significantly different from the control. In general, the hatching rate decreased with increasing concentration of Cyperus oil and was only 40% at the 5% treatment compared to 60 and 96.70% at 1% treatment and controls, respectively. Background and Introduction: The prevalence of hyperglycemic diseases known collectively as diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in the current century. Diabetics are particularly vulnerable to infections, which can have devastating health consequences. The purpose of this research was to examine the effects of an aqueous extract of Cyperus rotundus roots on diabetic complications in rats with diabetes caused by Alloxan. Martial and Methods: Specifically: Alloxan monohydrate, Borosilicate, and a diagnostic kit. Specifically: a diagnostic kit, a phrase, or a paraphrase. Centrifuge Micropippet, Glucose check monitoring device, electronic digital scales, EDDY's Hot plate analgesometer MK-11, and the Biofuse pico. All chemicals employed were of the AR grade variety, including the alloxan monohydrate, metformin, chloroform, diethyl ether, and ethyl ether. Results: No deaths or toxicity symptoms were observed in the AECR acute toxicity test in mice, indicating that the extract was well tolerated and the test doses were safe in the animals. The effect of AECR on fasting blood glucose level in alloxan-induced diabetic rats was measured using an auto analyzer glucose kit to determine the compound's antidiabetic activity. The plasma or blood glucose level is measured after an individual has fasted as part of a carbohydrate metabolic test. The hormone glucagon is secreted into the bloodstream during fasting to facilitate the catabolic release of glucose. Conclusion: The results show that in alloxan-induced diabetic rats, the oral administration of an aqueous extract of Cyperus rotundus exhibited neuroprotective, nephroprotective, and hepatoprotective activities by increasing insulin production and decreasing glucogan production and an SGOT snd SGPT level. Context: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is the most common form of acute leukemia. Currently, many people use medicinal herbs for the treatment of cancers. Nut grass (Cyperus rotundus L.) is a medicinal plant widely used in conventional medicine due to its role as an anti-cancer. Aims: To evaluate the effect of Cyperus rotundus tuber (CRT) ethanolic extract on cell proliferation, differentiation, cell cycle, and apoptotic of HL-60 cells. Methods: HL-60 cells line as a model for AML was cultured under the influence of CRT extract concentrations (35.4, 354, and 3540 µg/mL) for 48 h. Furthermore, the cell was subjected to carboxyfluorescein succinimidyl ester staining for proliferation, using a CD117 marker for differentiation. Annexin V-FITC and PI for cell cycle and apoptosis. The effect of this herb was studied by flow cytometry. The data were statistically analyzed with one-way ANOVA (p≤0.05) and the Tukey test using SPSS version 16 for Windows. Results: The results showed that the CRT inhibited proliferation activity, differentiation, cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis. Conclusions: The data clearly showed the potential anti-cancer activity of CRT on HL-60 cells and suggested that it could help develop promising therapeutic agents for AML treatments.

Abstract Background Trichinellosis, a zoonosis caused by the genus Trichinella, is a widespread foodborne disease. Albendazole, one of the benzimidazole derivatives, is used for treating human trichinellosis, but with limited efficacy in killing the encysted larvae and numerous adverse effects. Cyperus rotundus L. is a herbal plant with a wide range of medicinal uses, including antiparasitic, and is frequently used in traditional medicine to treat various illnesses. Methods LC-ESI-MS was used to identify the active phytoconstituents in the methanol extract (MeOH ext.) of the aerial parts of C. rotundus and its derivate fractions ethyl acetate (EtOAc fr.), petroleum ether (pet-ether fr.), and normal butanol (n-BuOH fr.). The in vivo therapeutic effects of C. rotundus fractions of the extracts were evaluated using the fraction that showed the most promising effect after detecting their in vitro anti-Trichinella spiralis potential. Results C. rotundus extracts are rich in different phytochemicals, and the LC-ESI-MS of the 90% methanol extract identified 26 phenolic compounds classified as phenolic acids, flavonoids, and organic acids. The in vitro studies showed that C. rotundus extracts had a lethal effect on T. spiralis adults, and the LC50 were 156.12 µg/ml, 294.67 µg/ml, 82.09 µg/ml, and 73.16 µg/ml in 90% MeOH ext., EtOAc fr., pet-ether fr. and n-BuOH fr., respectively. The n-BuOH fr. was shown to have the most promising effects in the in vitro studies, which was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. The in vivo effects of n-BuOH fr. alone and in combination with albendazole using a mouse model were evaluated by counting adults in the small intestine and larvae in the muscles, in addition to the histopathological changes in the small intestine and the muscles. In the treated groups, there was a significant decrease in the number of adults and larvae compared to the control group. Histopathologically, treated groups showed a remarkable improvement in the small intestine and muscle changes. Remarkably, maximal therapeutic effects were detected in the combination therapy compared to each monotherapy. Conclusion Accordingly, C. rotundus extracts may have anti-T. spiralis potential, particularly when combined with albendazole, and they may be used as synergistic to anti-T. spiralis medication therapy.

In the present study, zinc oxide nanoparticles were green-synthesized using the aqueous extract of the rhizomes of Cyperus rotundus. The chemical methods EDX, FE-SEM, XRD, UV-Vis., and FT-IR analysis were used to characterize ZnONPs@C. rotundus were characterized by analytical techniques including. The FE-SEM image revealed a spherical shape for the nanoparticles in a size range of 38.05 to 75.41 nm and 33.09 nm was calculated for ZnONPs@ C. rotundus crystal size using the XRD results. MTT assay was used on common lung well-differentiated bronchogenic adenocarcinoma cell line i.e. HLC-1 to survey the cytotoxicity and anti-lung well-differentiated bronchogenic adenocarcinoma effects of the synthesized nanoparticles. To determine the antioxidant properties of the synthesized nanoparticles, the DPPH test was used in the presence of butylated hydroxytoluene as the positive control. The synthesized nanoparticles had very low cell viability and high anti-lung well-differentiated bronchogenic adenocarcinoma activities dose-dependently against the HLC-1 cell line without any cytotoxicity on the normal cell line (HUVEC). The synthesized nanoparticles inhibited half of the DPPH molecules at the concentration of 41 µg/mL. Maybe significant anti-human lung well-differentiated bronchogenic adenocarcinoma potentials of the synthesized nanoparticles against common human lung well-differentiated bronchogenic adenocarcinoma cell lines are linked to their antioxidant activities.

Free radicals are harmful macromolecules that interact with lipids, nucleic acids and carbohydrates inside cells. The high level of ROS present in the cell leads to major health issues such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer and oxidative stress. In the current study, Cyperus rotundus (C.rotundus), Tinospora cordifolia (T.cordifolia) and their formulations were evaluated for their phytochemical content, functional group identification by FT-IR and In vitro free radical scavenging activity. The phytochemical analysis showed that the ethanolic extracts had more secondary metabolites like flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, and phenolic compounds than the extracts from the other solvents. Compared to the standard ascorbic acid, the ethanolic extract exhibited good free radical scavenging activity against DPPH, ABTS, hydrogen peroxide and superoxide and an elevated level of activity was observed with the increased concentration of the extract. The ethanolic extracts of C.rotundus, T.cordifolia and their formulation were investigated using FT-IR spectroscopy, which revealed the presence of unique functional groups such as primary as well as secondary amines, alkenes, nitro compounds and alkylhalides. In an In vitro model, the current finding demonstrates the anti-oxidant effectiveness of C.rotundus and T.cordifolia. Cyperus rotundus is the dry rhizome of the Cyperaceae plant Cyperus. Although there are two types of processed products in clinics, their quality differences are not clear, and the identification methods are more complex. In this study, the chemical composition of different processed products of Cyperus rotundus was characterized using ultra‐high‐performance liquid chromatography‐quadrupole‐time of flight‐mass spectrometry and molecular network analysis, to identify the potential chemical markers and to establish a quick and simple color‐based discrimination method. Among the 65 compounds analyzed, 12 showed significant differences. Observing the color, the surface brightness (L*) of Cyperus rotundus decreased after vinegar processing, while red (a*) and yellow (b*) values increased. These color values correlated significantly with chemical compositions. Finally, a color discriminant function was established and verified for raw Cyperus rotundus and vinegar‐processing Cyperus rotundus. Based on this study, Cyperus rotundus' quality can be effectively controlled and provides a method for the comprehensive characterization of chemical components and chemical markers of other traditional Chinese medicine and processed products, as well as new ideas and methods in identification and quality evaluation. Natural products are reported to have a vital role in the treatment of various diseases and drug design. In recent developments, natural drug molecules of plant origin have been reported exclusively for diabetic management. Type-2 diabetes or hyperglycemia is one such disease which is particularly studied for plant-based therapy in the last few decades. Though various plant extracts and metabolites have been reported for potential hyperglycemic activities, the Cyperus species plants have acquired a unique place in the phytochemical study as they are endowed with various health-beneficial bioactive metabolites and have proven biological properties. The present report is focused on the Cyperus species plants that are studied for antidiabetic properties in vitro as well as in vivo and the potential metabolites identified for such activities. The antidiabetic studies of metabolites or crude products from plants such as Cyperus articulatus, Cyperus esculentus, Cyperus kyllingia, Cyperus laevigatus, Cyperus pangorei, Cyperus rotundus, Cyperus scariosus and Cyperus tegetum were reviewed. The metabolites, responsible for such activities were listed from the literature survey wherever purification and identification works were reported. The review focused on the importance of natural products in managing diabetes mellitus and the pharmaceutical importance of Cyperus plants in in managing diabetes, their pharmaceutical importance, drug safety and effectiveness. Nut grass (Cyperus rotundus Linn.) is a weed that grows in all tropical, subtropical and temperate regions of the world, including areas where it grows on saline soil. This research was conducted to evaluate the effect of C. rotundus tuber extract in the diet on the growth performance and disease resistance of Nile tilapia. Various components of phytochemical importance of nut grass, including sugars/carbohydrates, terpenoids, tannins, and flavonoids were found in C. rotundus. Tilapia (n = 25 fish/group in triplicate) were fed with different levels of nut grass extract including 0 (control; T1), 0.4 (T2), 0.8 (T3), and 1.6 (T4) g/kg for 60 days in a completely randomized design (CRD) experiment. After the feeding trial, the highest weight gain and average daily gain (ADG) were observed in the T4 group, but it was not significantly different from T3 (Nile tilapia fed with a 0.8 g/kg) (p > 0.05). The lowest feed conversion ratio (FCR) was observed in the T3 group. Moreover, the fillet, crud lipid content, and blood chemical profiles (aspartate aminotransferase (AST), cholesterol, and malondialdehyde (MDA)) in fish fed with 1.6 g/kg were highest when compared in all groups. Abstract Background Infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) and infectious bronchitis (IB) are two common respiratory diseases of poultry that inflict great economic burden on the poultry industry. Developing an effective agent against both viruses is a crucial step to decrease the economic losses. Therefore, for the first time green synthesized silver nanoparticles using Cyperus rotundus L. aqueous extract was evaluated in vitro as a potential antiviral against both viruses. Results Silver nanoparticles from Cyperus rotundus were characterized by the spherical shape, 11–19 nm size, and zeta potential of − 6.04 mV. The maximum nontoxic concentration (MNTC) was 50 µg mL−1 for both viruses without harmful toxicity impact. The study suggested that some of the compounds in C. rotundus extract (gallic acid, chlorogenic acid, and naringenin) or its silver nanoparticles could interact with the external envelope proteins of both viruses, and inhibiting extracellular viruses. Conclusions The results highlight that C. rotundus green synthesized silver nanoparticles could have antiviral activity against infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV) and infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) in chickens. We evaluated the herbicidal activity of fractions recovered from the ethyl acetate leaf extract of Ageratum conyzoides L. on Amaranthus spinosus L., Cyperus rotundus L. and Axonopus compressus L. growth. The leaves of A. conyzoides were defatted with n-hexane and then extracted with ethyl acetate. Two subfractions A and B, were recovered after fractionation of the ethyl acetate extract by column chromatography. In pot assays, the ethyl acetate extract of 2-subfractions A and B were applied to A. spinosus, C. rotundus and A. compressus at concentrations of 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 % and the herbicide (2,4-D at 0.686 kg a.i. ha-1) and distilled water applied as positive and negative controls, respectively. The subfractions showed phytotoxic activity 7-days after the start of the pot assay. Subfraction A at concentrations of 4 % or higher completely suppressed the growth of A. spinosus and that of A. compressus at 10 % concentration. Thus, subfraction B was less phytotoxic to weeds than subfraction A. The C. rotundus weed was less sensitive to both subfractions. GC-MS indicated the presence of caryophyllene (6.40 %), 2-propenoic acid, 3-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-, (E)- (15.35%), precosene II (23.33 %) and phytol (4.33 %) in subfraction A; and caryophyllene (9.61 %), 2-propenoic acid, 3-(2- hydroxyphenyl)-, (E)- (20.82 %), precocene I (3.27 %) and precocene II (29.78 %) in subfraction B. Antioxidants provide protection contrary to oxidative stress by counteracting free radicals through the help of different bioactive constituents present in the plants. The aim of this study is to find out the quantitative estimation of phytochemicals (phenolics, tannins, flavonoid, non-tannins, alkaloid and saponins), in vitro antioxidant activity (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate, metal chelating, ferric reducing, superoxide dismutase and total antioxidant activity) of different parts of Cyperus rotundus. Along with this, the extraction of polyphenolic compounds by conventional and non-conventional methods and their optimization by response surface methodology technique were also studied. As the outcomes of the study, maximum amount of total phenolics content was found in the ethanolic fraction of stem (37.88±0.94 mg gallic acid equivalent/g). The root has shown the highest flavonoid (0.24±0.03 mg QAE/g) and non-tannin content (21.55±2.43 mg gallic acid equivalent/g) in the extract of petroleum ether. The total alkaloids and tannin content in flower and root i.e., 5.05±0.08 mg caffeine equivalent/g and 76.28±0.62 mg tannic acid equivalent/g was found to be better in aqueous extract respectively. The fraction of ethyl acetate has reported the greatest saponin content (39.2±3.8 mg gallic acid equivalent/g). In case of flower part half-maximal inhibitory concentration value of 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate and superoxide dismutase antioxidant activity varies from 0.57-1.90 mg/ml and from 0.053-1.401 mg/ml respectively. Antioxidant activity of each part of the plant was reported in the fraction of ethanol and water by fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (0.403±0.009-0.886±0.02 mg/ml), metal chelation activity (0.010±0.0-0.306±0.001 mg/ml) and total antioxidant capacity (0.030±0.0- 0.317±0.002 mg/ml). Microwave assisted extraction method was found to be the suitable one for optimization of total phenolic content. So, the relationship between different parameter was determined through response surface methodology technique and evaluated by plotting the graphs. Polar extracts have found to show the maximum quantity of secondary bioactive metabolites and antioxidant activity as compared to non-polar one. And among the comparison between conventional and non-conventional methods, ultra sonication (non-conventional method) has shown the highest yield of bioactive phenolic compound. So, this study shows that Cyperus rotundus has wide range of secondary metabolites showing antioxidant properties that can be applied for different therapeutic applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cyperus rotundus L. is the main focus of the present work, which was carried out in order to find an effective and ecofriendly way to control this menacing weed. Allelopathic plants may show an enhancement of their phytotoxicity following their mixoploidisation. Hence, phytotoxic activity of diploid and mixoploid Trigonella foenum-graecum L. plants (fenugreek) harvested at vegetative stage was evaluated on C. rotundus. Treatments were applied either by pulverization of fenugreek aerial parts aqueous extracts (at 10, 20, and 30%) or by incorporation of the aerial parts powder into potting soil (in amounts of 0.2%, 0.6%, 1%), in pot experiments, under natural conditions. Results showed that phytotoxicity degree was dependent on the treatment and the ploidy level. Indeed, mixoploid fenugreek aqueous extract at 30% was the most harmful to weeds, whose leaves were totally burned, with 92.77% and 86% inhibition on root growth and weight, respectively. Pulverization by aqueous extracts of diploid plants had no significant effect on C. rotundus vegetative growth which was similar to control at all concentrations. The growth of C. rotundus , treated by adding mixoploid fenugreek powder to the potting soil, has been improved at the highest doses. However, its shoots and roots length and leaf number and weight were reduced by 45.45%, 63.88%, 66.66% and 74.54% respectively following adding diploid plants at 1%. As the pulverization treatment by mixoploid plants was the most phytotoxic on C. rotundus , the reproducibility of this result was evaluated in field trial. Same to pot experiments, shoot growth was completely inhibited at 30%, with 91.51% and 92.17% reduction in root growth and weight. Weed growth inhibition seems to be correlated with membrane deterioration (proved by an increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) content by 67.55% and 57.85% in leaves and roots and electrolyte leakage increase by 64.88% and 46.46% in the same organs) and mitochondrial respiration disruption due to a decrease in dehydrogenases activity. Chlorophyll and soluble sugars contents were similarly affected; while, proline and carotenoid contents increased. This study showed that mixoploidy could be an effective way to enhance the phytotoxicity of plants, which may be used to control the main weeds, often very resistant even to industrial herbicides. Understanding the different action mode of allelochemicals on target species may provide a basis for the development of bio-herbicides to boost up production in sustainable agriculture. Background: Trichinellosis, a zoonosis caused by the genus Trichinella, is a widespread foodborne disease. Albendazole, one of the benzimidazole derivatives, is used for treating human trichinellosis, but with limited efficacy in killing the encysted larvae and numerous adverse effects. Cyperus rotundus L. is a herbal plant with a wide range of medicinal uses, including antiparasitic, and is frequently used in traditional medicine to treat various illnesses. Methods: LC-ESI-MS was used to identify the active phytoconstituents in the methanol extract (MeOH ext.) of the aerial parts of C. rotundus and its derivate fractions ethyl acetate (EtOAc fr.), petroleum ether (pet-ether fr.), and normal butanol (n-BuOH fr.). The in vivo therapeutic effects of C. rotundus fractions of the extracts were evaluated using the fraction that showed the most promising effect after detecting their in vitro anti-Trichinella spiralis potential. Results: C. rotundus extracts are rich in different phytochemicals, and the LC-ESI-MS of the 90% methanol extract identified 26 phenolic compounds classified as phenolic acids, flavonoids, and organic acids. The in vitro studies showed that C. rotundus extracts had a lethal effect on T. spiralis adults, and the LC50 were 156.12 µg/ml, 294.67 µg/ml, 82.09 µg/ml, and 73.16 µg/ml in 90% MeOH ext., EtOAc fr., pet-ether fr. and n-BuOH fr., respectively. The n-BuOH fr. was shown to have the most promising effects in the in vitro studies, which was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. The in vivo effects of n-BuOH fr. alone and in combination with albendazole using a mouse model were evaluated by counting adults in the small intestine and larvae in the muscles, in addition to the histopathological changes in the small intestine and the muscles. In the treated groups, there was a significant decrease in the number of adults and larvae compared to the control group. Histopathologically, treated groups showed a remarkable improvement in the small intestine and muscle changes. Remarkably, maximal therapeutic effects were detected in the combination therapy compared to each monotherapy. Conclusion: Accordingly, C. rotundus extracts may have anti-T. spiralis potential, particularly when combined with albendazole, and they may be used as synergistic to anti-T. spiralis medication therapy. Cyperus rotundus Linn. is a potentially valuable aromatic plant given its ability to synthesise essential oil and the variety of traditional uses associated with it. The valorisation of this plant would imply the exploitation of a significant quantity of its biomass, which cannot be obtained from the wild. The aim of this study was to determine the best methods for regeneration and the development phases of C. rotundus, in order to ensure the continuous availability of its biomass. The mode of natural regeneration and the state of domestication of C. rotundus by local populations were investigated through surveys of traditional healers and herbalists. In addition, ex situ regeneration trials were carried out using vegetative propagation from bulbs and seed germination. The vegetative propagation was assessed by estimating the lag time and percentage regeneration of the bulbs, while the seed germination percentage was evaluated. The development phases of the plant were identified following the BBCH (Biologische Bundesanstalt Bundessortenamt and CHemische Industrie) scale. The yield was calculated from the underground biomass of the bulbs produced at the end of the plant lifecycle. The results showed that C. rotundus regenerates naturally from bulbs and rarely from seeds. In the Western Highlands of Cameroon, traditional practitioners and herbalists have begun domesticating C. rotundus on a small scale. Propagation attempts from seed were unsuccessful in the present study. However, from bulbs, a lag time of 10 days was observed and a regeneration percentage of 88% obtained after 47 days. Five phases of development were identified including emergence (0), bolting (1), flowering (2), maturation (3) and senescence (4). The production of bulbs, which are organs containing the essential oils, was observed from the bolting phase. The biomasses of about 383, 493 and 520 kg/ha were obtained during phase 1, 2 and 3 respectively. The best propagation method and the development phases of Cyperus rotundus investigated in this work could contribute to an advance in the domestication process in order to ensure its availability and sustainability. Plant vegetative organs present great potential for lipid storage, with tubers of Cyperus esculentus as a unique example. To investigate the genome and transcriptomic features of C. esculentus and related species, we sequenced and assembled the C. esculentus genome at the contig level. Through a comparative study of high-quality transcriptomes across 36 tissues from high-oil and intermediate-oil C. esculentus and low-oil Cyperus rotundus , we identified potential genes and regulatory networks related to tuber oil accumulation. First, we identified tuber-specific genes in two C. esculentus cultivars. Second, genes involved in fatty acid (FA) biosynthesis, triacylglycerol synthesis, and TAG packaging presented increased activity in the later stages of tuber development. Notably, tubers with high oil contents presented higher levels of these genes than those with intermediate oil contents did, whereas tubers with low oil contents presented minimal gene expression. Notably, a large fragment of the FA biosynthesis rate-limiting enzyme-encoding gene BCCP1 was missing from the C. rotundus transcript, which might be responsible for blocking FA biosynthesis in its tubers. WGCNA pinpointed a gene module linked to tuber oil accumulation, with a coexpression network involving the transcription factors WRI1 , MYB4 , and bHLH68. The ethylene-related genes in this module suggest a role for ethylene signaling in oil accumulation, which is supported by the finding that ethylene (ETH) treatment increases the oil content in C. esculentus tubers. The present study evaluated the efficacy and safety of Cyperus rotundus rhizome extract (CRE), standardized to contain Piceatannol, Scirpusin A, and Scirpusin B (5% total Stilbenoids) in overweight individuals. The mechanism of activity was evaluated in a diet-induced mice model of obesity and adipocytes in vitro.Materials and Methods: The efficacy, safety, and tolerability of CRE were evaluated in 30 obese individuals with a BMI of 30 to 40 kg/m2 for 90 days in a randomized, double-blind, parallel-group, placebo-controlled study. In vitro studies were carried out in differentiated 3T3 L1 adipocytes, and the therapeutic efficacy was evaluated in high-fat diet-induced obese mice.Results: The pilot clinical study showed a reduction in body weight with a significant decrease in waist circumference and BMI. The serum lipid profile showed a significant improvement in CRE-treated individuals. The extract was well tolerated, and no adverse effects were reported at the end of the study. CRE showed a dose-dependent adipogenesis reduction in vitro with an IC50 value of 9.39 μg/mL, while oral administration of CRE reduced weight gain in diet-induced obese mice. In the present study, zinc oxide nanoparticles were green-synthesized using the aqueous extract of the rhizomes of Cyperus rotundus. The chemical methods EDX, FE-SEM, XRD, UV-Vis., and FT-IR analysis were used to characterize ZnONPs@C. rotundus were characterized by analytical techniques including. The FE-SEM image revealed a spherical shape for the nanoparticles in a size range of 38.05 to 75.41 nm and 33.09 nm was calculated for ZnONPs@ C. rotundus crystal size using the XRD results. MTT assay was used on common lung well-differentiated bronchogenic adenocarcinoma cell line i.e. HLC-1 to survey the cytotoxicity and anti-lung well-differentiated bronchogenic adenocarcinoma effects of the synthesized nanoparticles. To determine the antioxidant properties of the synthesized nanoparticles, the DPPH test was used in the presence of butylated hydroxytoluene as the positive control. The synthesized nanoparticles had very low cell viability and high anti-lung well-differentiated bronchogenic adenocarcinoma activities dose-dependently against the HLC-1 cell line without any cytotoxicity on the normal cell line (HUVEC). The synthesized nanoparticles inhibited half of the DPPH molecules at the concentration of 41 µg/mL. Maybe significant anti-human lung well-differentiated bronchogenic adenocarcinoma potentials of the synthesized nanoparticles against common human lung well-differentiated bronchogenic adenocarcinoma cell lines are linked to their antioxidant activities. SUMMARY: There are numerous examples of plant organs or developmental stages that are desiccation‐tolerant and can withstand extended periods of severe water loss. One prime example are seeds and pollen of many spermatophytes. However, in some plants, also vegetative organs can be desiccation‐tolerant. One example are the tubers of yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus), which also store large amounts of lipids similar to seeds. Interestingly, the closest known relative, purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus), generates tubers that do not accumulate oil and are not desiccation‐tolerant. We generated nanoLC‐MS/MS‐based proteomes of yellow nutsedge in five replicates of four stages of tuber development and compared them to the proteomes of roots and leaves, yielding 2257 distinct protein groups. Our data reveal a striking upregulation of hallmark proteins of seeds in the tubers. A deeper comparison to the tuber proteome of the close relative purple nutsedge (C. rotundus) and a previously published proteome of Arabidopsis seeds and seedlings indicates that indeed a seed‐like proteome was found in yellow but not purple nutsedge. This was further supported by an analysis of the proteome of a lipid droplet‐enriched fraction of yellow nutsedge, which also displayed seed‐like characteristics. One reason for the differences between the two nutsedge species might be the expression of certain transcription factors homologous to ABSCISIC ACID INSENSITIVE3, WRINKLED1, and LEAFY COTYLEDON1 that drive gene expression in Arabidopsis seed embryos. Significance Statement: In this work we compare the protein composition of the tubers of yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus), which are desiccation‐tolerant and oil‐rich, with the tubers of purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus), which do not have these characteristics. Balachaturbhadra Churna (BC), Ayurvedic powder dosage form, has four ingredients (Aconitum heterophyllum Wall. Ex Royle, Pistacia integerrima stew. Ex brandis, Piper longum Linn., and Cyperus rotundus linn.), which is commonly prescribed for treating fever, cough, and diarrhea in a pediatric setting. Aim: The present study evaluates the possible antiviral effect of phytochemicals from the ingredients of BC on severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) main protease (MPro), Ribose Nucleic Acid (RNA) dependent RNA polymerase (RdRP), and spike-angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (SA) complex through in silico evaluation. Materials and methods: X-ray crystal structure of MPro and Spike-Ace (SA) complex with Protein Data Bank (PDB) IDs 6LU7 and 6LZG and the SWISS model of RdRP were used as the drug targets. An enhanced docking methodology has been implemented to perform the molecular docking of these phytochemicals against the above-mentioned drug targets of SARS-CoV-2. DOCK6 was used to perform the docking of these phytochemicals. The absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity (ADMET) and drug likeliness properties for these selected phytochemicals were performed using SWISS ADME. Results: The ensemble docking studies suggest that aconitine, lappaaconitine from Aconitum heterophyllum Wall. Ex Royle, 2'-hydroxyisorientin from Pistacia integerrima stew. Ex brandis, and guineesine, pipercide and piperoic acid from Piper longum Linn. hold the potential to bind favorably with the SARS-CoV-2 drug targets. The drug-likeliness and ADMET properties were calculated for these phytochemicals indicating that all three phytochemicals from Piper longum were observed to have considerate drug-likeliness and ADMET properties. Aconitine has a molecular weight slightly higher than 500 kDA and has more than 10 hydrogen bond acceptors. Conclusion: The in silico study demonstrates that phytochemicals present in BC viz., aconitine, lappaaconitine from Aconitum heterophyllum, 2'-hydroxyisorientin from Pistacia intergerrima and guineesine, pipercide, and piperoic acid from Piper longum hold the potential to bind favourably with the SARS-CoV-2 drug targets. The study also provides evidence for drug likeliness and ADMET properties for these phytochemicals suggesting that BC can be further studied as a potential drug of choice for treating SARS-CoV-2 infection to avert post-infectious disease, characterized by multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children in rare cases and other similar conditions in the pediatric setting. Background: Infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) and infectious bronchitis (IB) are two common respiratory diseases of poultry that inflict great economic burden on the poultry industry. Developing an effective agent against both viruses is a crucial step to decrease the economic losses. Therefore, for the first time green synthesized silver nanoparticles using Cyperus rotundus L. aqueous extract was evaluated in vitro as a potential antiviral against both viruses. Results: Silver nanoparticles from Cyperus rotundus were characterized by the spherical shape, 11–19 nm size, and zeta potential of − 6.04 mV. The maximum nontoxic concentration (MNTC) was 50 µg mL−1 for both viruses without harmful toxicity impact. The study suggested that some of the compounds in C. rotundus extract (gallic acid, chlorogenic acid, and naringenin) or its silver nanoparticles could interact with the external envelope proteins of both viruses, and inhibiting extracellular viruses. Conclusions: The results highlight that C. rotundus green synthesized silver nanoparticles could have antiviral activity against infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV) and infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) in chickens. Background: The objective of the present investigation was to design and evaluate the antiurolithiatic activity of extract of Tribulus terrestris, Bryophyllum pinnatum, and Cyperus rotundus on ethylene glycol-induced urolithiasis in Wistar albino rats using Box Behnken Design. To induce urolithiasis, 0.75% w/v ethylene glycol was administered orally to the rats for 28 days. Cystone 750 mg/kg was selected as the reference standard as a preventive dose. On the 28th day, urine discharged in 24 h was collected and subjected for estimation of various biochemical parameters which were evaluated using urine, serum, and kidney homogenate. The kidneys were also sectioned and examined histopathologically to study the kidney architecture and calcium oxalate deposits. Results: The TT: BP: CR treatment significantly (P < 0.05) restored the parameters in urine, serum, and kidney homogenate to a near-normal level. An effective reduction in the stone promoter and an increase in stone inhibitor levels were observed. The optimum efficacy was observed in test group 13 with (TT: BP: CR= 50:100:35 mg/kg p.o) dosage regimen. The histopathological examinations revealed that calcium oxalate crystal deposits in the renal tubules and congestion and dilation of the parenchymal blood vessels were significantly reverted after the treatment with the herbal extract. Cockroaches are among the most adaptive creatures to the environment; they dwell on the earth's surface for the past millions of years. The presence of cockroaches is posing serious health issues in many countries of the world. Searching for an effective natural repellent agent has become a highly important attempt to control these insects. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate the chemical compositions of essential oil from Sudanese Cyperus rotundus rhizomes and determine their repellent activity against American cockroaches (Periplaneta americana). The obtained essential oil was radish yellow in color, the oil content was 0.73% and forty-four constituents were identified. The most major components were: Isolongifolol (7.63%), longiverbenone (5.61%), ß-cadinene (5.54%), and longifolenaldehyde (5.16%). The oil was characterized by sesquiterpenes abundance 52.45% (oxygenated sesquiterpenes 30.72% and sesquiterpenes hydrocarbons 21.73%); whereas, monoterpenes comprised 8.43% (oxygenated monoterpenes 6.81%, and monoterpenes hydrocarbons 1.62%). The experiment showed that the essential oil possesses promising results as a repellent against P. americana. Therefore, conducting more research on isolation, identification of active compounds and extensive tests on other types of cockroaches are priorities in future studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Since time immemorial, humans have identified several herbs to treat various ailments. With the advancement of science and state-of-the-art technologies, different herbal extracts and chemical constituents of herbs were identified as therapeutic targets. Cyperus rotundus, also called mustaka, is one of the most ancient herbs widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions across the globe. The tuberous and aerial parts of the herb were identified to possess various pharmacological properties. Objectives: This review focuses on the various phytocompounds of mustaka and how these compounds exert pharmacological effects and their mode of action. The molecular and cellular effects of mustaka were also discussed based on the preclinical and clinical reports available using an array of in vitro, in vivo, and ex vivo methodologies. Methods: The information from Google Scholar, Science direct, PUBMED, were reviewed with a special focus on the mode of action of C. rotundus from the data on animal and pre-clinical experiments to treat various diseases. Conclusion: Based on the literature available on C. rotundus in Google Scholar, Science Direct, and PubMed, the pharmacological properties of mustaka were reviewed with a particular focus on its neuropharmacological activities. The mode of action of C. rotundus and its bioactive metabolites at the molecular biology level were demonstrated based on animal and preclinical experiments to cure various ailments. These diverse effects prove C. rotundus as a valuable traditional medicine for treating various disorders.
