Many specialists maintain that, in some cases, chronic conditions such as migraine, eczema and irritable bowel syndrome could be caused by abnormal reactions or 'sensitivity' to certain foods. However there is no simple test for food sensitivities and estimates of the number of people affected range from 10% to 40% of the population. Consultant gastroenterologist Dr John Hunter believes that food intolerances stem from damage to the gut flora, or bacteria. He explains that this can be caused by antibiotics and by gastroenteritis, cases of which have increased as a result of the growth in foreign travel.
