Abstract

Experts warn that people who spend a long time on the toilet could be damaging their health because they are likely to strain too much. Specialist in colorectal surgery Professor Roger Grace points out that the idea that the bowels should be opened once a day is an outmoded concept dating from Victorian times. Grace explains that straining can cause problems such as haemorrhoids and fissures. However proponent of colonic irrigation Dr Gillian McKeith maintains that the bowels should ideally be opened twice a day, arguing that waste can go toxic in the intestines if it is not cleared out.
