The manufacturing cost of quantum cascade lasers is still a major bottleneck for the adoption of this technology for chemical sensing. The integration of Mid-Infrared sources on Si substrate based on CMOS technology paves the way for high-volume low-cost fabrication. Furthermore, the use of Si-based fabrication platform opens the way to the co-integration of QCL Mid-InfraRed sources with SiGe-based waveguides, enabling realization of optical sensors fully integrated on planar substrate. We report here the fabrication and the characterization of DFB-QCL sources using top metal grating approach working at 7.4 µm fully implemented on our 200 mm CMOS pilot line. These QCL featured threshold current density of 2.5 kA/cm² and a linewidth of 0.16 cm -1 with a high fabrication yield. This approach paves the way toward a Mid-InfraRed spectrometer at the silicon chip level.

Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility and future clinical applications of near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging to guide liver resection surgery for metastatic cancer to improve resection margins. Summary Background Data A subset of patients with metastatic hepatic tumors can be cured by surgery. The degree of long-term and disease-free survival is related to the quality of surgery, with the best resection defined as "R0" (complete removal of all tumor cells, as evidenced by microscopic examination of the margins). Although intraoperative ultrasonography can evaluate the surgical margins, surgeons need a new tool to perfect the surgical outcome. Methods A preliminary study was performed on 3 patients. We used NIR imaging postoperatively "ex vivo" on the resected liver tissue. The liver tumors were preoperatively labelled by intravenously injecting the patient with indocyanine green (ICG), a NIR fluorescent agent (24 hours before surgery, 0.25 mg/kg). Fluorescent images were obtained using a miniaturized fluorescence imaging system (FluoStic, Fluoptics, Grenoble, France). Results After liver resection, the surgical specimens from each patient were sliced into 10-mm sections in the operating room and analyzed with the FluoStic. All metastatic tumors presented rim-type fluorescence. Two specimens had incomplete rim fluorescence. The pathologist confirmed the presence of R1 margins (microscopic residual resection), even though the ultrasonographic analysis indicated that the result was R0. Conclusions Surgical liver resection guided by NIR fluorescence can help detect potentially uncertain anatomical areas that may be missed by preoperative imaging and by ultrasonography during surgery. In this paper, we discuss a new methodology based on lensfree imaging to perform wound healing assay with unprecedented statistics. Our video lensfree microscopy setup is a simple device featuring only a CMOS sensor and a semi coherent illumination system. Yet it is a powerful mean for the real-time monitoring of cultivated cells. It presents several key advantages, e.g. integration into standard incubator, compatibility with standard cell culture protocol, simplicity and ease of use. It can perform the follow-up in a large field of view (25 mm(2)) of several crucial parameters during the culture of cells i.e. their motility, their proliferation rate or their death. Consequently the setup can gather large statistics both in space and time. Here we uses this facility in the context of wound healing assay to perform label-free measurements of the velocities of the fronts of proliferation of the cell layer as a function of time by means of particle image velocimetry (PIV) processing. However, for such tissue growth experiments, the field of view of 25 mm(2) remains not sufficient and results can be biased depending on the position of the device with respect to the recipient of the cell culture. Hence, to conduct exhaustive wound healing assays, we propose to enlarge the field of view up to 10 cm(2) through a raster scan, by moving the source/sensor with respect to the Petri dish. We have performed acquisitions of wound healing assay (keratinocytes HaCaT) both in real-time (25 mm(2)) and in final point (10 cm(2)) to assess the combination of velocimetry measurements and final point wide field imaging. In the future, we aim at combining directly our extended field of view acquisitions (>10 cm(2)) with real time ability inside the incubator.

Over the last few years, near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging has witnessed rapid growth and is already used in clinical trials for various procedures. However, most clinically compatible imaging systems are optimized for large, open-surgery procedures. Such systems cannot be employed during head and neck oncologic surgeries because the system is not able to image inside deep cavities or allow the surgeon access to certain tumors due to the large footprint of the system. We describe a miniaturized, low-cost, NIR fluorescence system optimized for clinical use during oral oncologic surgeries. The system, termed FluoSTIC, employs a miniature, high-quality, consumer-grade lipstick camera for collecting fluorescence light and a novel custom circular optical fiber array for illumination that combines both white light and NIR excitation. FluoSTIC maintains fluorescence imaging quality similar to that of current large-size imaging systems and is 22 mm in diameter and 200 mm in height and weighs less than 200 g.
