Abstract

The broad physics reach of the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment covers rare phenomena beyond the direct detection of dark matter. We report precise measurements of the extremely rare decay of $^{124}$Xe through the process of two-neutrino double electron capture (2$\nu$2EC), utilizing a $1.39\,\mathrm{kg} \times \mathrm{yr}$ isotopic exposure from the first LZ science run. A half-life of $T_{1/2}^{2\nu2\mathrm{EC}} = (1.09 \pm 0.14_{\text{stat}} \pm 0.05_{\text{sys}}) \times 10^{22}\,\mathrm{yr}$ is observed with a statistical significance of $8.3\,\sigma$, in agreement with literature. First empirical measurements of the KK capture fraction relative to other K-shell modes were conducted, and demonstrate consistency with respect to recent signal models at the $1.4\,\sigma$ level., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Purpose: Single-neutron adding data was collected in order to determine the distribution of the single-neutron strength of the $0f_{7/2}$, $1p_{3/2}$, $1p_{1/2}$ and $0f_{5/2}$ orbitals outside of $Z=16, N=18$, $^{34}$S. Methods: The $^{34}$S($d$,$p$)$^{35}$S reaction has been measured at 8 MeV/u to investigate cross sections to excited states in $^{35}$S. Outgoing proton yields and momenta were analyzed by the Super-Enge Split-Pole Spectrograph in conjunction with the CeBrA demonstrator located at the John D. Fox Laboratory at Florida State University. Angular distributions were compared with Distorted Wave Born Approximation calculations in order to extract single-neutron spectroscopic overlaps. Results: Spectroscopic overlaps and strengths were determined for states in $^{35}$S up through 6 MeV in excitation energy. Each orbital was observed to have fragmented strength where a single level carried the majority. The single-neutron centroids of the $0f_{7/2}$, $1p_{3/2}$, $1p_{1/2}$ and $0f_{5/2}$ orbitals were determined to be $2360^{+90}_{-40}$ keV, $3280^{+80}_{-50}$ keV, $4780^{+60}_{-40}$ keV, and $\gtrsim7500$ keV, respectively. Conclusion: A previous discrepancy in the literature with respect to distribution of the neutron $1p_{1/2}$ strength was resolved. The integration of the normalized spectroscopic strengths, up to 5.1 MeV in excitation energy, revealed fully-vacant occupancies for the $0f_{7/2}$, $1p_{3/2}$, and $1p_{1/2}$ orbitals, as expected. The spacing in the single-neutron energies highlighted a reduction in the traditional $N=28$ shell-gap, relative to both the $1p$ spin-orbit energy difference ($N=32$) and the lower limit on the $N=34$ shell spacing., Comment: Updated draft

Abstract

Deep learning-based object detection algorithms enable the simultaneous classification and localization of any number of objects in image data. Many of these algorithms are capable of operating in real-time on high resolution images, attributing to their widespread usage across many fields. We present an end-to-end object detection pipeline designed for real-time rare event searches for the Migdal effect, using high-resolution image data from a state-of-the-art scientific CMOS camera in the MIGDAL experiment. The Migdal effect in nuclear scattering, crucial for sub-GeV dark matter searches, has yet to be experimentally confirmed, making its detection a primary goal of the MIGDAL experiment. Our pipeline employs the YOLOv8 object detection algorithm and is trained on real data to enhance the detection efficiency of nuclear and electronic recoils, particularly those exhibiting overlapping tracks that are indicative of the Migdal effect. When deployed online on the MIGDAL readout PC, we demonstrate our pipeline to process and perform the rare event search on 2D image data faster than the peak 120 frame per second acquisition rate of the CMOS camera. Applying these same steps offline, we demonstrate that we can reduce a sample of 20 million camera frames to around 1000 frames while maintaining nearly all signal that YOLOv8 is able to detect, thereby transforming a rare search into a much more manageable search. Our studies highlight the potential of pipelines similar to ours significantly improving the detection capabilities of experiments requiring rapid and precise object identification in high-throughput data environments.

Abstract

Weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) may interact with a virtual pion that is exchanged between nucleons. This interaction channel is important to consider in models where the spin-independent isoscalar channel is suppressed. Using data from the first science run of the LUX-ZEPLIN dark matter experiment, containing 60 live days of data in a 5.5~tonne fiducial mass of liquid xenon, we report the results on a search for WIMP-pion interactions. We observe no significant excess and set an upper limit of $1.5\times10^{-46}$~cm$^2$ at a 90\% confidence level for a WIMP mass of 33~GeV/c$^2$ for this interaction.

Abstract

The Data Acquisition System (DAQ) for the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) dark matter detector is described. The signals from 745 PMTs, distributed across three subsystems, are sampled with 100-MHz 32-channel digitizers (DDC-32s). A basic waveform analysis is carried out on the on-board Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) to extract information about the observed scintillation and electroluminescence signals. This information is used to determine if the digitized waveforms should be preserved for offline analysis. The system is designed around the Kintex-7 FPGA. In addition to digitizing the PMT signals and providing basic event selection in real time, the flexibility provided by the use of FPGAs allows us to monitor the performance of the detector and the DAQ in parallel to normal data acquisition. The hardware and software/firmware of this FPGA-based Architecture for Data acquisition and Realtime monitoring (FADR) are discussed and performance measurements are described., Comment: 18 pages, 24 figures

LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) is a tonne-scale experiment searching for direct dark matter interactions and other rare events. It is located at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota, USA. The core of the LZ detector is a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber (TPC), designed with the primary goal of detecting Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) via their induced low energy nuclear recoils. Surrounding the TPC, two veto detectors immersed in an ultra-pure water tank enable reducing background events to enhance the discovery potential. Intricate calibration systems are purposely designed to precisely understand the responses of these three detector volumes to various types of particle interactions and to demonstrate LZ's ability to discriminate between signals and backgrounds. In this paper, we present a comprehensive discussion of the key features, requirements, and performance of the LZ calibration systems, which play a crucial role in enabling LZ's WIMP-search and its broad science program. The thorough description of these calibration systems, with an emphasis on their novel aspects, is valuable for future calibration efforts in direct dark matter and other rare-event search experiments.

Abstract

The first science run of the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment, a dual-phase xenon time project chamber operating in the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota, USA, has reported leading limits on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon interactions and interactions described from a non-relativistic effective field theory (NREFT). Using the same 5.5~t fiducial mass and 60 live days of exposure we report on the results of a relativistic extension to the NREFT. We present constraints on couplings from covariant interactions arising from the coupling of vector, axial currents, and electric dipole moments of the nucleon to the magnetic and electric dipole moments of the WIMP which cannot be described by recasting previous results described by an NREFT. Using a profile-likelihood ratio analysis, in an energy region between 0~keV$_\text{nr}$ to 270~keV$_\text{nr}$, we report 90% confidence level exclusion limits on the coupling strength of five interactions in both the isoscalar and isovector bases., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The Data Acquisition System (DAQ) for the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) dark matter detector is described. The signals from 745 PMTs, distributed across three subsystems, are sampled with 100-MHz 32-channel digitizers (DDC-32s). A basic waveform analysis is carried out on the on-board Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) to extract information about the observed scintillation and electroluminescence signals. This information is used to determine if the digitized waveforms should be preserved for offline analysis. The system is designed around the Kintex-7 FPGA. In addition to digitizing the PMT signals and providing basic event selection in real time, the flexibility provided by the use of FPGAs allows us to monitor the performance of the detector and the DAQ in parallel to normal data acquisition. The hardware and software/firmware of this FPGA-based Architecture for Data acquisition and Realtime monitoring (FADR) are discussed and performance measurements are described.

Abstract

Searches for dark matter with liquid xenon time projection chamber experiments have traditionally focused on the region of the parameter space that is characteristic of weakly interacting massive particles, ranging from a few GeV/c2 to a few TeV/c2. Models of dark matter with a mass much heavier than this are well motivated by early production mechanisms different from the standard thermal freeze-out, but they have generally been less explored experimentally. In this work, we present a reanalysis of the first science run of the LZ experiment, with an exposure of 0.9 tonne×yr, to search for ultraheavy particle dark matter. The signal topology consists of multiple energy deposits in the active region of the detector forming a straight line, from which the velocity of the incoming particle can be reconstructed on an event-by-event basis. Zero events with this topology were observed after applying the data selection calibrated on a simulated sample of signal-like events. New experimental constraints are derived, which rule out previously unexplored regions of the dark matter parameter space of spin-independent interactions beyond a mass of 1017 GeV/c2.

Abstract

Following the first science results of the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment, a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber operating from the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, USA, we report the initial limits on a model-independent nonrelativistic effective field theory describing the complete set of possible interactions of a weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) with a nucleon. These results utilize the same 5.5 t fiducial mass and 60 live days of exposure collected for the LZ spin-independent and spin-dependent analyses while extending the upper limit of the energy region of interest by a factor of 7.5 to 270 keV. No significant excess in this high energy region is observed. Using a profile-likelihood ratio analysis, we report 90% confidence level exclusion limits on the coupling of each individual nonrelativistic WIMP-nucleon operator for both elastic and inelastic interactions in the isoscalar and isovector bases.

Abstract

Following the first science results of the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment, a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber operating from the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, USA, we report the initial limits on a model-independent non-relativistic effective field theory describing the complete set of possible interactions of a weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) with a nucleon. These results utilize the same 5.5 t fiducial mass and 60 live days of exposure collected for the LZ spin-independent and spin-dependent analyses while extending the upper limit of the energy region of interest by a factor of 7.5 to 270 keVnr. No significant excess in this high energy region is observed. Using a profile-likelihood ratio analysis, we report 90% confidence level exclusion limits on the coupling of each individual non-relativistic WIMP-nucleon operator for both elastic and inelastic interactions in the isoscalar and isovector bases., Comment: 17 pages 11 figures

Abstract

This article describes an undergraduate physics module at a university in England that places year 3 student physicists in secondary school classrooms for a semester. This is done as a way of introducing them to the occupation of secondary physics teaching using a realistic job preview approach. The module helps the undergraduate students develop their communication and professional skills and supports the physics learning of pupils in the schools where they are placed. The perceptions of the participating students toward secondary school physics teaching are then investigated. Abstract

We report on a highly selective experimental setup for particle-$\gamma$ coincidence experiments at the Super-Enge Split-Pole Spectrograph (SE-SPS) of the John D. Fox Superconducting Linear Accelerator Laboratory at Florida State University (FSU) using fast CeBr$_3$ scintillators for $\gamma$-ray detection. Specifically, we report on the results of characterization tests for the first five CeBr$_3$ scintillation detectors of the CeBr$_3$ Array (CeBrA) with respect to energy resolution and timing characteristics. We also present results from the first particle-$\gamma$ coincidence experiments successfully performed with the CeBrA demonstrator and the FSU SE-SPS. We show that with the new setup, $\gamma$-decay branching ratios and particle-$\gamma$ angular correlations can be measured very selectively using narrow excitation energy gates, which are possible thanks to the excellent particle energy resolution of the SE-SPS. In addition, we highlight that nuclear level lifetimes in the nanoseconds regime can be determined by measuring the time difference between particle detection with the SE-SPS focal-plane scintillator and $\gamma$-ray detection with the fast CeBrA detectors. Selective excitation energy gates with the SE-SPS exclude any feeding contributions to these lifetimes.

Abstract

We performed a measurement of the $^{52}$Cr$(d,p)^{53}$Cr reaction at 16 MeV using the Florida State University Super-Enge Split-Pole Spectrograph (SE-SPS) and observed 26 states. While all of the states observed here had been seen in previous $(d,p)$ experiments, we changed five $L$ assignments from those reported previously and determined $L$ values for nine states that had not had such assignments made previously. The $g_{9/2}$ neutron strength observed in $^{53}$Cr in the present work and in the $N=29$ isotones $^{49}$Ca, $^{51}$Ti, and $^{55}$Fe via $(d,p)$ reactions is much smaller than the sum rule for this strength. Most of the observed $L=4$ strength in these nuclei is located in states near 4 MeV excitation energy. The remaining $g_{9/2}$ strength may be located in the continuum or may be fragmented among many bound states. A covariant density functional theory calculation provides support for the hypothesis that the $g_{9/2}$ neutron orbit is unbound in $^{53}$Cr. The ($\alpha,^3$He) reaction may provide a more sensitive probe for the missing $g_{9/2}$ neutron strength. Abstract

In the Ge-Sr mass region, isotopes with neutron number $N \leq 40$ are known to feature rapid shape changes with both nucleon number and angular momentum. To gain new insights into their structure, inelastic proton scattering experiments in inverse kinematics were performed on the rare isotopes $^{74,76}$Kr. This work focuses on observables related to the $J^{\pi} = 4^+_1$ states of the Kr isotopes and, in particular, on the hexadecapole degree of freedom. By performing coupled-channels calculations, hexadecapole deformation parameters $\beta_4$ were determined for the $J^{\pi} = 4^+_1$ states of $^{74,76}$Kr from inelastic proton scattering cross sections. Two possible coupled-channels solutions were found. A comparison to predictions from nuclear energy density functional theory, employing both non-relativistic and relativistic functionals, clearly favors the large, positive $\beta_4$ solutions. These $\beta_4$ values are unambiguously linked to the well deformed prolate configuration. Given the $\beta_2 - \beta_4$ trend, established in this work, it appears that $\beta_4$ values could provide a sensitive measure of the nuclear shell structure., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Physics Letters B

Abstract

The LUX-ZEPLIN experiment is a dark matter detector centered on a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber operating at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, USA. This Letter reports results from LUX-ZEPLIN's first search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with an exposure of 60 live days using a fiducial mass of 5.5 t. A profile-likelihood ratio analysis shows the data to be consistent with a background-only hypothesis, setting new limits on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon, spin-dependent WIMP-neutron, and spin-dependent WIMP-proton cross sections for WIMP masses above 9  GeV/c^{2}. The most stringent limit is set for spin-independent scattering at 36  GeV/c^{2}, rejecting cross sections above 9.2×10^{-48}  cm at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract

The LUX-ZEPLIN experiment recently reported limits on WIMP-nucleus interactions from its initial science run, down to 9.2×10-48 cm2 for the spin-independent interaction of a 36 GeV/c2 WIMP at 90% confidence level. In this paper, we present a comprehensive analysis of the backgrounds important for this result and for other upcoming physics analyses, including neutrinoless double-beta decay searches and effective field theory interpretations of LUX-ZEPLIN data. We confirm that the in-situ determinations of bulk and fixed radioactive backgrounds are consistent with expectations from the ex-situ assays. The observed background rate after WIMP search criteria were applied was (6.3±0.5)×10-5 events/keVee/kg/day in the low-energy region, approximately 60 times lower than the equivalent rate reported by the LUX experiment.

Abstract

A measurement of the $^{54}$Fe($d$,$p$)$^{55}$Fe reaction at 16 MeV was performed using the Florida State University Super-Enge Split-Pole Spectrograph to determine single-neutron energies for the $2p_{3/2}$, $2p_{1/2}$, $1f_{5/2}$, $1g_{9/2}$ and $2d_{5/2}$ orbits. Two states were observed that had not been observed in previous (d, p) measurements. In addition, we made angular momentum transfer, \textit{L}, assignments to four states and changed \textit{L} assignments from previous ($d$, $p$) measurements for nine more states. The spin-orbit splitting between the $2p_{3/2}$ and $2p_{1/2}$ orbits is similar to that in the other $N=29$ isotones and not close to zero as a previous measurement suggested. While the $1f_{5/2}$ single neutron energy is significantly lower in $^{55}$Fe than in $^{51}$Ti, as predicted by a covariant density functional theory calculation, the single-neutron energy for this orbit in $^{55}$Fe is more than 1 MeV higher than the calculation suggests, although it is only 400 keV above the $2p_{1/2}$ orbit. The summed spectroscopic strength we observed for the $1g_{9/2}$ orbit up to the single-neutron separation energy of 9.3 MeV is only 0.3. Abstract

The LUX-ZEPLIN experiment recently reported limits on WIMP-nucleus interactions from its initial science run, down to $9.2\times10^{-48}$ cm$^2$ for the spin-independent interaction of a 36 GeV/c$^2$ WIMP at 90% confidence level. In this paper, we present a comprehensive analysis of the backgrounds important for this result and for other upcoming physics analyses, including neutrinoless double-beta decay searches and effective field theory interpretations of LUX-ZEPLIN data. We confirm that the in-situ determinations of bulk and fixed radioactive backgrounds are consistent with expectations from the ex-situ assays. The observed background rate after WIMP search criteria were applied was $(6.3\pm0.5)\times10^{-5}$ events/keV$_{ee}$/kg/day in the low-energy region, approximately 60 times lower than the equivalent rate reported by the LUX experiment., Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures

Abstract

Enhanced octupole collectivity is expected in the neutron-deficient Ge, Se and Kr isotopes with neutron number $N \approx 40$ and has indeed been observed for $^{70,72}$Ge. Shape coexistence and configuration mixing are, however, a notorious challenge for theoretical models trying to reliably predict octupole collectivity in this mass region, which is known to feature rapid shape changes with changing nucleon number and spin of the system. To further investigate the microscopic configurations causing the prolate-oblate-triaxial shape transition at $A \approx 72$ and their influence on octupole collectivity, the rare isotopes $^{72}$Se and $^{74,76}$Kr were studied via inelastic proton scattering in inverse kinematics. While significantly enhanced octupole strength of $\sim 32$ Weisskopf units (W.u.) was observed for $^{72}$Se, only strengths of $\sim 15$ W.u. were observed for $^{74,76}$Kr. In combination with existing data, the new data clearly question a simple origin of enhanced octupole strengths around $N = 40$. The present work establishes two regions of distinct octupole strengths with a sudden strength increase around the $A=72$ shape transitional point.

Abstract

The LUX-ZEPLIN experiment is a dark matter detector centered on a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber operating at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, USA. This Letter reports results from LUX-ZEPLIN's first search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with an exposure of 60~live days using a fiducial mass of 5.5 t. A profile-likelihood ratio analysis shows the data to be consistent with a background-only hypothesis, setting new limits on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon, spin-dependent WIMP-neutron, and spin-dependent WIMP-proton cross sections for WIMP masses above 9 GeV/c$^2$. The most stringent limit is set for spin-independent scattering at 36 GeV/c$^2$, rejecting cross sections above 9.2$\times 10^{-48}$ cm$^2$ at the 90% confidence level., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures. 35. Deletion of Aurora kinase A prevents the development of polycystic kidney disease in mice

Abstract Aurora Kinase A (AURKA) promotes cell proliferation and is overexpressed in different types of polycystic kidney disease (PKD). To understand AURKA’s role in regulating renal cyst development we conditionally deleted the gene in mouse models of Autosomal Dominant PKD (ADPKD) and Joubert Syndrome, caused by Polycystin 1 (Pkd1) and Inositol polyphosphate-5-phosphatase E (Inpp5e) mutations respectively. We show that while Aurka is dispensable for collecting duct development and homeostasis, its deletion prevents cyst formation in both disease models. Cross-comparison of transcriptional changes implicated AKT signaling in cyst prevention and we show that (i) AURKA and AKT physically interact, (ii) AURKA regulates AKT activity in a kinase-independent manner and (iii) inhibition of AKT can reduce disease severity. AKT activation also regulates Aurka expression, creating a feed-forward loop driving renal cystogenesis. We find that the AURKA kinase inhibitor Alisertib stabilises the AURKA protein, agonizing its cystogenic functions. These studies identify AURKA as a master regulator of renal cyst development in different types of PKD, functioning in-part via AKT.

Abstract

Background:. We previously demonstrated the successful use of in vivo CRISPR gene editing to delete 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPD) to rescue mice deficient in fumarylacetoacetate hydrolase (FAH), a disorder known as hereditary tyrosinemia type 1 (HT1). The aim of this study was to develop an ex vivo gene-editing protocol and apply it as a cell therapy for HT1. Methods:. We isolated hepatocytes from wild-type (C57BL/6J) and Fah −/− mice and then used an optimized electroporation protocol to deliver Hpd-targeting CRISPR-Cas9 ribonucleoproteins into hepatocytes. Next, hepatocytes were transiently incubated in cytokine recovery media formulated to block apoptosis, followed by splenic injection into recipient Fah −/− mice. Results:. We observed robust engraftment and expansion of transplanted gene-edited hepatocytes from wild-type donors in the livers of recipient mice when transient incubation with our cytokine recovery media was used after electroporation and negligible engraftment without the media (mean: 46.8% and 0.83%, respectively; p=0.0025). Thus, the cytokine recovery medium was critical to our electroporation protocol. When hepatocytes from Fah −/− mice were used as donors for transplantation, we observed 35% and 28% engraftment for Hpd-Cas9 ribonucleoproteins and Cas9 mRNA, respectively. Tyrosine, phenylalanine, and biochemical markers of liver injury normalized in both Hpd-targeting Cas9 ribonucleoprotein and mRNA groups independent of induced inhibition of Hpd through nitisinone, indicating correction of disease indicators in Fah −/− mice. Conclusions:. The successful liver cell therapy for HT1 validates our protocol and, despite the known growth advantage of HT1, showcases ex vivo gene editing using electroporation in combination with liver cell therapy to cure a disease model. These advancements underscore the potential impacts of electroporation combined with transplantation as a cell therapy.

Abstract

Re-examination of three specimens from the Kanchenjunga Himal of Nepal via in situ Lu-Hf garnet geochronology yields evidence of multiple garnet growth events. Spot analyses from grain cores in two specimens define Paleozoic regressions whereas analyses from grain rims in the same specimens define low-precision regressions consistent with the timing of Himalayan orogenesis. These dates contrast with previously published low dispersion, ca. 290 Ma isotope dissolution (ID) Lu-Hf garnet dates for the same rocks. Modelling of Lu and spot age distribution in representative grains from the specimens examined yields calculated dates that approximate the Permian-age regressions through the original ID data. These findings demonstrate that it is possible to generate low dispersion ID Lu-Hf data from multi-generational garnet with significantly different-age growth events when approximately equal proportions of the different age reservoirs are included in multi-component aliquots.

Abstract

Bothremydidae was one of the most diverse and widespread group of side-necked turtles (pleurodirans) during the Cretaceous and part of the Paleogene. In South America, the Paleogene record of bothremydids is restricted to Puentemys mushaisaensis from the middle–late Paleocene Cerrejón Formation of Colombia, Inaechelys pernambucensis from the Paleocene of Brazil, and Motelomama olssoni from the early Eocene of Perú. Here, we describe two shells of P. mushaisaensis and several other isolated bones conferred to this taxon from the upper Paleocene and lower Eocene Arcillolitas de Socha Formation found in the Socha Region, Boyacá Department of Colombia. U-Pb dating of detrital zircon from two levels from this formation indicates maximum depositional ages of 56.83±0.04 Ma and 57.2±0.5 Ma for the areniscas guía interval of the formation. The new occurrence of P. mushaisaensis in the Socha region, at least 500 km south from Cerrejón, indicates a wider biogeographical distribution of northern South America Paleocene herpetofauna, possibly helped by low topography and ecosystems connectivity via a faunistic corridor.

Abstract

The nature of dark matter and properties of neutrinos are among the most pressing issues in contemporary particle physics. The dual-phase xenon time-projection chamber is the leading technology to cover the available parameter space for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), while featuring extensive sensitivity to many alternative dark matter candidates. These detectors can also study neutrinos through neutrinoless double-beta decay and through a variety of astrophysical sources. A next-generation xenon-based detector will therefore be a true multi-purpose observatory to significantly advance particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, solar physics, and cosmology. Abstract

Machine learning techniques are now well established in experimental particle physics, allowing detector data to be analysed in new and unique ways. The identification of signals in particle observatories is an essential data processing task that can potentially be improved using such methods. This paper aims at exploring the benefits that a dedicated machine learning approach might provide to the classification of signals in dual-phase noble gas time projection chambers. A full methodology is presented, from exploratory data analysis using Gaussian mixture models and feature importance ranking to the construction of dedicated predictive models based on standard implementations of neural networks and random forests, validated using unlabelled simulated data from the LZ experiment as a proxy to real data. The global classification accuracy of the predictive models developed in this work is estimated to be >99.0%, which is an improvement over conventional algorithms tested with the same data. The results from the clustering analysis were also used to identify anomalies in the data caused by miscalculated signal properties, showing that this methodology can also be used for data monitoring., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

We estimate the amount of $^{37}$Ar produced in natural xenon via cosmic ray-induced spallation, an inevitable consequence of the transportation and storage of xenon on the Earth's surface. We then calculate the resulting $^{37}$Ar concentration in a 10-tonne payload~(similar to that of the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment) assuming a representative schedule of xenon purification, storage and delivery to the underground facility. Using the spallation model by Silberberg and Tsao, the sea level production rate of $^{37}$Ar in natural xenon is estimated to be 0.024~atoms/kg/day. Assuming the xenon is successively purified to remove radioactive contaminants in 1-tonne batches at a rate of 1~tonne/month, the average $^{37}$Ar activity after 10~tonnes are purified and transported underground is 0.058--0.090~$\mu$Bq/kg, depending on the degree of argon removal during above-ground purification. Such cosmogenic $^{37}$Ar will appear as a noticeable background in the early science data, while decaying with a 35~day half-life. This newly-noticed production mechanism of $^{37}$Ar should be considered when planning for future liquid xenon-based experiments.

Abstract The present study examined heat stress vulnerability of apparently healthy older vs. young adults and characterized critical environmental limits for older adults in an indoor setting at rest (Rest) and during minimal activity associated with activities of daily living. Critical environmental limits are combinations of ambient temperature and humidity above which heat balance cannot be maintained (i.e., becomes uncompensable) for a given metabolic heat production. Abstract

Dark matter searches using dual-phase xenon time-projection chambers (LXe-TPCs) rely on their ability to reject background electron recoils (ERs) while searching for signal-like nuclear recoils (NRs). ER response is typically calibrated using $\beta$-decay sources, such as tritium, but these calibrations do not characterize events accompanied by an atomic vacancy, as in solar neutrino scatters off inner shell electrons. Such events lead to emission of X-rays and Auger electrons, resulting in higher electron-ion recombination and thus a more NR-like response than inferred from $\beta$-decay calibration. We present a cross-calibration of tritium $\beta$-decays and $^{127}$Xe electron-capture decays (which produce inner-shell vacancies) in a small-scale LXe-TPC and give the most precise measurements to date of light and charge yields for the $^{127}$Xe L-shell electron-capture in liquid xenon. We observe a 6.9$\sigma$ (9.2$\sigma$) discrepancy in the L-shell capture response relative to tritium $\beta$-decays, measured at a drift field of 363 $\pm$ 14 V/cm (258 $\pm$ 13 V/cm), when compared to simulations tuned to reproduce the correct $\beta$-decay response. In dark matter searches, use of a background model that neglects this effect leads to overcoverage (higher limits) for background-only multi-kiloton-year exposures, but at a level much less than the 1-$\sigma$ experiment-to-experiment variation of the 90\% C.L. upper limit on the interaction rate of a 50 GeV/$c^2$ dark matter particle., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures
