FOS: Physical sciences ,Nuclear Experiment (nucl-ex) ,Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The 235U(n,f) cross section was measured in a wide energy range (25 meV - 170 keV) at the n_TOF facility at CERN, relative to 6Li(n,t) and 10B(n,alpha) standard reactions, with high resolution and accuracy, with a setup based on a stack of six samples and six silicon detectors placed in the neutron beam. In this paper we report on the results in the region between thermal and 10 keV neutron energy. A resonance analysis has been performed up to 200 eV, with the code SAMMY. The resulting fission kernels are compared with the ones extracted on the basis of the resonance parameters of the most recent major evaluated data libraries. A comparison of the n_TOF data with the evaluated cross sections is also performed from thermal to 10 keV neutron energy for the energy-averaged cross section in energy groups of suitably chosen width. A good agreement is found in average between the new results and the latest evaluated data files ENDF-B/VIII and JEFF-3.3, as well as with respect to the IAEA reference files. However, some discrepancies are still present in some specific energy regions. The new dataset here presented, characterized by unprecedented resolution and accuracy, can help improving the evaluations in the Resolved Resonance Region and up to 10 keV, and reduce the uncertainties that affect this region.

Background The complexity of oesophageal surgery and the significant risk of morbidity necessitates that oesophagectomy is predominantly performed by a consultant surgeon, or a senior trainee under their supervision. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of trainee involvement in oesophagectomy on postoperative outcomes in an international multicentre setting. Methods Data from the multicentre Oesophago-Gastric Anastomosis Study Group (OGAA) cohort study were analysed, which comprised prospectively collected data from patients undergoing oesophagectomy for oesophageal cancer between April 2018 and December 2018. Procedures were grouped by the level of trainee involvement, and univariable and multivariable analyses were performed to compare patient outcomes across groups. Results Of 2232 oesophagectomies from 137 centres in 41 countries, trainees were involved in 29.1 per cent of them (n = 650), performing only the abdominal phase in 230, only the chest and/or neck phases in 130, and all phases in 315 procedures. For procedures with a chest anastomosis, those with trainee involvement had similar 90-day mortality, complication and reoperation rates to consultant-performed oesophagectomies (P = 0.451, P = 0.318, and P = 0.382, respectively), while anastomotic leak rates were significantly lower in the trainee groups (P = 0.030). Procedures with a neck anastomosis had equivalent complication, anastomotic leak, and reoperation rates (P = 0.150, P = 0.430, and P = 0.632, respectively) in trainee-involved versus consultant-performed oesophagectomies, with significantly lower 90-day mortality in the trainee groups (P = 0.005). Conclusion Trainee involvement was not found to be associated with significantly inferior postoperative outcomes for selected patients undergoing oesophagectomy. The results support continued supervised trainee involvement in oesophageal cancer surgery., The aim of this study was to determine the impact of trainee involvement in oesophagectomy on perioperative outcomes in the international multicentre Oesophago-Gastric Anastomosis Audit (OGAA). Analysis of 2232 oesophagectomies has shown that trainee involvement did not negatively impact perioperative outcomes.

Background Textbook outcome has been proposed as a tool for the assessment of oncological surgical care. However, an international assessment in patients undergoing oesophagectomy for oesophageal cancer has not been reported. This study aimed to assess textbook outcome in an international setting. Methods Patients undergoing curative resection for oesophageal cancer were identified from the international Oesophagogastric Anastomosis Audit (OGAA) from April 2018 to December 2018. Textbook outcome was defined as the percentage of patients who underwent a complete tumour resection with at least 15 lymph nodes in the resected specimen and an uneventful postoperative course, without hospital readmission. A multivariable binary logistic regression model was used to identify factors independently associated with textbook outcome, and results are presented as odds ratio (OR) and 95 per cent confidence intervals (95 per cent c.i.). Results Of 2159 patients with oesophageal cancer, 39.7 per cent achieved a textbook outcome. The outcome parameter ‘no major postoperative complication’ had the greatest negative impact on a textbook outcome for patients with oesophageal cancer, compared to other textbook outcome parameters. Multivariable analysis identified male gender and increasing Charlson comorbidity index with a significantly lower likelihood of textbook outcome. Presence of 24-hour on-call rota for oesophageal surgeons (OR 2.05, 95 per cent c.i. 1.30 to 3.22; P = 0.002) and radiology (OR 1.54, 95 per cent c.i. 1.05 to 2.24; P = 0.027), total minimally invasive oesophagectomies (OR 1.63, 95 per cent c.i. 1.27 to 2.08; P < 0.001), and chest anastomosis above azygous (OR 2.17, 95 per cent c.i. 1.58 to 2.98; P < 0.001) were independently associated with a significantly increased likelihood of textbook outcome. Conclusion Textbook outcome is achieved in less than 40 per cent of patients having oesophagectomy for cancer. Improvements in centralization, hospital resources, access to minimal access surgery, and adoption of newer techniques for improving lymph node yield could improve textbook outcome.

Type: ― Habitat in Italiae, Narbonae vineis [lectotype designated by Burtt & Lewis (1952): BM catalogue number BM000557701!, image available at https://data.nhm.ac.uk/object/23e95e56-b6b2-47eb-b410-fab483fb1ebc/1642291200000]. Description (Fig. 1):―Prostrate herbs, with a long principal root, branches bifurcate, internodes 410 mm long, glabrous. Stipules 24 12 mm, two in each node, interpetiolar, triangular-deltoid or lanceolate, scarious, glabrous. Leaves 48 25 mm, opposite or verticillate, orbicular, ovate or slightly obovate, glabrous, bases attenuated, apices rounded or mucronate, pinnate nerviation with 24 pairs of secondary nerves; petiole ca. 1 mm, glabrous. Inflorescence up to 2 cm, terminal, cymose with numerous bracts in the nodes; similar to the stipules. Flowers 23 mm, pedicel ca. 1 mm, sepals five, 12 12 mm, subulate, margins hyaline; petaloid staminodes five, to 1 1 mm, oblong, with apex entire or slightly emarginate, white, shorter than the sepals; stamens 35, ca. 1 mm long, white; filaments to 0.6 mm long; anthers 0.20.3 mm long; ovoid, dorsifixed; ovary 12 mm, superous, ovoid; stile to 1 mm; stigma trifid. Fruit to 3 3 mm, capsule, with three valves. Seeds to 0.5 0.3 mm, semicircular, numerous; testa papillose. Distribution and habitat: ― Polycarpon tetraphyllum is native to the mediterranean and it has spread in America, Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania (CABI, 2021). In Colombia this species has only been collected in two localities of Bogot D.C (Fig. 2). Notes: ― Polycarpon apurese, which is currently the only native Polycarpon taxon occurring in Colombia, is naturally distributed in South America (Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Venezuela; Bernal 2016, Muoz-Schick et al. 2016, POWO, 2019), whereas it has been introduced in Mexico (Escamilla 1999). Despite not included in the molecular analyses by Kool et al. (2007), P. apurense shows, in our opinion, all the characters typical of P. prostratum and three Macaronesian species of the genus Polycarpaea (Volponi 2004, Kool et al. 2007): P. nivea (Aiton 1789: 286) Webb (in Hooker 1849: 104), P. latifolia Poiret (in Lamarck & Poiret 1816: 473), and P. divaricata Poiret ex Steudel (in Steudel 1841: 369). As a consequence, it is likely that P. apurense is part of this group. P. apurense differs from P. tetraphyllum s.str. being more pubescent, leaves linear to lanceolate, ellipsoidal reticulate brown to reddish seeds with little spines in the dorsal margin, while P. tetraphyllum s.str. is glabrous, the leaves are ovate or obovate, D-shaped papillate white to yellowish seeds unarmed in the dorsal margin. FOS: Mathematics ,Numerical Analysis (math.NA) ,Mathematics - Numerical Analysis ,Physics::Geophysics - Abstract
Full waveform inversion (FWI) is one of a family of methods that allows the reconstruction of earth subsurface parameters from measurements of waves at or near the surface. This is a numerical optimization problem that uses the whole waveform information of all arrivals to update the subsurface parameters that govern seismic wave propagation. We apply FWI in the multi-scale approach on two well-known benchmarks: Marmousi and 2004 BP velocity model. For the forward modeling, we use an RBF-FD solver on hexagonal grids and quasi-optimal shape parameters., Short report. 9 pages, 2 figures and one table

We classify all left-invariant pseudo-Riemannian Einstein metrics on $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})\times \mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ that are bi-invariant under a one-parameter subgroup. We find that there are precisely two such metrics up to homothety, the Killing form and a nearly pseudo-K\"ahler metric., Comment: 14 pages

22. Investigation of RF signals for the slow extraction at HIT's medical synchrotron
- Author

Corts Garca, Edgar Cristopher
- Abstract
In the present thesis an excitation signal spectrum for the slow extraction is proposed. The spectrum covers two main regions of interest: one that excites particles with low transversal oscillation amplitudes in the beam and one that excites particles with higher amplitude oscillations. The implementation of the signal together with the feedback loop for the control of the amplitude of the excitation improves the median-quality of the extracted particle count (spill) from 92.5% to better than 97.5% for the most rigid carbon-ion beam available. The improvement is more drastic for the proton beam where the quality of the spill can go as poor as 60% and is brought to better than 90% for all extraction energy configurations. The same quality gain is observed for helium- and oxygen-ion beams. The positive effect of the proposed spectrum on the spill quality can be explained from the tune-spread characteristics given by the non-linear dynamics that govern the system. These were mainly studied experimentally through a beam transfer function (BTF) measurement and with particle tracking simulations. Both give an insight into the tune-distribution of the beam under extraction conditions.

The European Virtual Observatory (VO) initiative organises regular VO schools since 2008. The goals are twofold: i) to expose early-career European astronomers to the variety of currently available VO tools and services so that they can use them efficiently for their own research and; ii) to gather their feedback on the VO tools and services and the school itself. During the schools, VO experts guide participants on the usage of the tools through a series of predefined real science cases, an activity that took most of the allocated time. Participants also have the opportunity to develop their own science cases under the guidance of VO tutors. These schools have demonstrated to be very useful for students, since they declare to regularly use the VO tools in their research afterwards, and for us, since we have first hand information about the user needs. Here, we introduce our VO schools, the approach we follow, and present the training materials that we have developed along the years., Proceeding to Astronomy. Software. Systems.

- Abstract

- Abstract

We explore an idealized theoretical model for the transport of ions within highly asymmetric ionic liquid mixtures. A primitive model (PM)-inspired system serves as a representative for asymmetric ionic materials (such as liquid crystalline salts) which quench to form disordered, partially-arrested phases. Self-Consistent Generalized Langevin Equation (SCGLE) Theory is applied to understand the connection between the size ratio of charge-matched salts and their average mobility. Within this model, we identify novel glassy states where one of the two charged species (either the macro-cation or the micro-anion) are arrested, while the other retains mobility. We discuss how this result is useful in the development of novel single-ion conducting phases in ionic liquid based materials., 11 pages, 5 figures

Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most common and aggressive cancers worldwide. The Gleason score (GS) system is the standard way of classifying prostate cancer and the most reliable method to determine the severity and treatment to follow. The pathologist looks at the arrangement of cancer cells in the prostate and assigns a score on a scale that ranges from 6 to 10. Automatic analysis of prostate whole-slide images (WSIs) is usually addressed as a binary classification problem, which misses the finer distinction between stages given by the GS. This paper presents a probabilistic deep learning ordinal classification method that can estimate the GS from a prostate WSI. Approaching the problem as an ordinal regression task using a differentiable probabilistic model not only improves the interpretability of the results, but also improves the accuracy of the model when compared to conventional deep classification and regression architectures.

From the premise that Pierre Bourdieu's work can contribute to the challenges of the human being in the 21st century, we propose as a philosophical investigation to highlight the conception of the human being with which he operates from his work. Although Bourdieu does not present a concept about the human being, it is assumed that every thinker works with conceptions about the human being and about the world, in the case of this author, the social world. The Bourdieusian conception of the human being is the object of research elaborated in four interrelated chapters. The first chapter starts from the premise that Bourdieu builds the concept of human being as a social being from his perspective of life, a perspective focused on action as a relevant category in problematizing the relationship between individual and society. With that, we propose the reconstruction of the personal trajectory intertwined with the Bourdieusian intellectual trajectory in order to list the concept of social human being. As a social human being, we propose to present in the second chapter, the Bourdieusian constructivism based on collective action. Such proposal questions the nomenclature offered by the author, the constructivist structuralism or structuralist constructivism from Bourdieu's encounter with Jean Piaget and Lev S. Vigostki. From this, in the third chapter it was imposed as initially necessary to demonstrate the differences that allow to place the irrelevance of understanding Bourdieusian theory as a structuralist theory. The discussion is with the L?vi-straussian structuralist anthropology with and against which Bourdieu constructs his theory. After that, the objective is to demonstrate the articulation of the concepts of habitus, field and capital within the scope of Bourdieusian constructivism. Finally, the fourth chapter is devoted to the conception of a social human being as a social agent based on action. The doctoral proposal aims to offer a contribution to the research of Bourdieusian work and contemporary philosophy.

The electrocaloric (EC) effect is the reversible change in temperature and/or entropy of a material when it is subjected to an adiabatic electric field change. Our tight-binding calculations linked to Fermi statistics, show that the EC effect is sensitive to the stacking arrangement in trilayer graphene (TLG) structures connected to a heat source, and is produced by changes of the electronic density of states (DOS) near the Fermi level when external gate fields are applied on the outer graphene layers. We demonstrate the AAA-stacked TLG presents an inverse EC response (cooling), whereas the EC effect in ABC-stacked TLG remains direct (heating) regardless of the applied gate field potential strength. We reveal otherwise the TLG with Bernal-ABA stacking geometry generates both the inverse and direct EC response in the same sample, associated with a gate-dependent electronic entropy transition at finite temperature. By varying the chemical potential to different Fermi levels, we find maxima and minima of the DOS are located near the extremes of the electronic entropy, which are correlated with sign changes in the differential entropy per particle, giving a particular experimentally measurable electronic entropy spectrum for each TLG geometry. The EC effect in quantum two-dimensional layered systems may bring a wide variety of prototype van der Waals materials that could be used as versatile platforms to controlling the temperature in nanoscale electronic devices required in modern portable on-chip technologies., 11 pages, 10 figures
