Abstract

Thermochemical water splitting processes based on Sulfur-Iodine cycle can be conveniently improved using solid intermediates, in order to increase the global yield and avoid the use of concentrated acid at high temperatures. In this context, an innovative process has been conceived, where a metal oxide, namely NiO, is reduced into oxygen and the correspondent metal, which can be suitably stored and reacted with steam into hydrogen when and where necessary. Data previously obtained and published, together with the integration of experimental results have been used to evaluate the technical feasibility and the heat duties of each step of the proposed cycle. The starting point was a Nickel compounds based process already extensively characterized, which has been modified using low toxic Iron (III) species as intermediates for oxygen formation. Based on the theoretical and experimental analysis carried out, the resulting cycle thermal efficiency is quite promising, about 19%, also taking into account the hydrogen generation step.

Abstract

Carbonates based thermochemical storage systems are very promising given their high energy density and low toxicity. Nevertheless, there are few literature data about their thermodynamic and kinetic features, which are necessary parameters to evaluate the exploitation of these materials for practical applications. The purpose of the present work was to investigate the kinetics of the carbonation-discharging step, which represents the rate determining process of this accumulation medium. At this aim, a dedicated experimental campaign was carried out, considering two different temperatures (600 and 700 °C) and several carbon dioxide partial pressures. The results show that the discharging reaction can be fitted with a Multigrain Shrinking Core model, and that the conversion rate is independent from temperature, while the effect of gas diffusivity increases from 600 to 700°C. Abstract

Despite its large interesting as component for low melting HTF and HSM, very few thermodynamics information is available regarding calcium nitrate and its mixtures. In this paper the binaries between Ca(NO3)2 and both NaNO3 and KNO3 are experimentally investigate by DSC and Neutron scattering. The results show that the solid phase of the binaries is composed by a solid solution of single nitrates. Abstract

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is a promising technology for the production of biocrude oil from microalgae. Although this catalyst-free technology is efficient under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions, the biocrude yield and quality can be further improved by using heterogeneous catalysts. The design of robust catalysts that preserve their performance under hydrothermal conditions will be therefore very important in the development of biorefinery technologies. In this work, we describe two different synthetic routes (i.e., impregnation and cyclodextrin-assisted one-pot colloidal approach), for the preparation in aqueous phase of six high surface area CoMo/γ-Al2O3catalysts. Catalytic tests performed on the HTL of Nannochloropsis gaditanamicroalga indicate that solids prepared by the one-pot colloidal approach show higher hydrothermal stability and enhanced biocrude yield with respect to the catalyst-free test. The positive effect of the substitution of the block copolymer Tetronic T90R4 for Pluronic F127 in the preparation procedure was evidenced by diffuse reflectance UV–visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, N2-adsorption–desorption, and H2-temperature-programmed reduction measurements and confirmed by the higher quality of the obtained biocrude, which exhibited lower oxygen content and higher-energy recovery equal to 62.5% of the initial biomass.
