Extant life contains numerous non-equilibrium mechanisms to create order not achievable at equilibrium; it is generally assumed that these mechanisms evolved because the resulting order was sufficiently beneficial to overcome associated costs of time and energy. Here, we identify a broad range of conditions under which non-equilibrium order-creating mechanisms will evolve as an inevitable consequence of self-replication, even if the order is not directly functional. We show that models of polymerases, when expanded to include known stalling effects, can evolve kinetic proofreading through selection for fast replication alone, consistent with data from recent mutational screens. Similarly, replication contingent on fast self-assembly can select for non-equilibrium instabilities and result in more ordered structures without any direct selection for order. We abstract these results into a framework that predicts that self-replication intrinsically amplifies dissipative order-enhancing mechanisms if the distribution of replication times is wide enough. Our work suggests the intriguing possibility that non-equilibrium order can arise more easily than assumed, even before that order is directly functional, with consequences impacting mutation rate evolution and kinetic traps in self-assembly to the origin of life.

The development of new algorithms for simulations in physics is as important as the development of new analytical methods. In this paper we present a comparison of the recently developed microcanonical population annealing (MCPA) algorithm with the rather mature Wang-Landau algorithm. The comparison is performed on two cases of the Potts model exhibiting a first order phase transition. We compare the simulation results of both methods with exactly known results, including the finite-dimensional dependence of the maximum of the specific heat capacity. We evaluate the Binder cumulant minimum, the ratio of peaks in the energy distribution at the critical temperature, and the energies of the ordered and disordered phases. We model an overdamped Brownian particle that is subject to resetting facilitated by a periodic ratchet potential. This asymmetric potential switches on with a constant rate, but switches off again only upon the particle's first passage to a resetting point at the minimum of the potential. Repeating this cycle sustains a non-equilibrium steady-state, as well as a directed steady-state current which can be harnessed to perform useful work. We derive exact analytic expressions for the probability densities of the free-diffusion and resetting phases, the associated currents for each phase, and an efficiency parameter that quantifies the return in current for given power input. These expressions allow us to fully characterise the system and obtain experimentally relevant results such as the optimal current and efficiency. Water's unique anomalies are vital in various applications and biological processes, yet the molecular mechanisms behind these anomalies remain debated, particularly in the metastable liquid phase under supercooling and stretching conditions. Experimental challenges in these conditions have led to simulations suggesting a liquid-liquid phase transition between low-density and high-density water phases, culminating in a liquid-liquid critical point (LLCP). However, these simulations are limited by computational expense, small system sizes, and reliability of water models. Using the FS model, we improve accuracy in predicting water's density and response functions across a broad range of temperatures and pressures. The FS model avoid by design first-order phase transitions towards crystalline phases, allowing thorough exploration of the metastable phase diagram. We employ advanced numerical techniques to bypass dynamical slowing down and perform finite-size scaling on systems significantly larger than those used in previous analyses. Our study extrapolates thermodynamic behavior in the infinite-system limit, accurately demonstrating the existence of the LLCP in the 3D Ising universality class at TC = 186 +/- 4 K and PC = 174 +/- 14 MPa, following a liquid-liquid phase separation below 200 MPa. These predictions align with recent experimental data and more sophisticated models, highlighting that hydrogen bond cooperativity governs the LLCP and the origin of water anomalies. Moreover, we observe that the hydrogen bond network exhibits substantial cooperative fluctuations at scales larger than 10 nm, even at temperatures relevant to biopreservation. The weighted planar stochastic (WPS) lattice introduces a topological disorder that emerges from a multifractal structure. Its dual network has a power-law degree distribution and is embedded in a two-dimensional space, forming a planar network. We modify the original recipe to construct WPS networks with degree distributions interpolating smoothly between the original power-law tail, $P(q)\sim q^{-\alpha}$ with exponent $\alpha\approx 5.6$, and a square lattice. We analyze the role of disorder in the modified WPS model, considering the critical behavior of the contact process. We report a critical scaling depending on the network degree distribution. The scaling exponents differ from the standard mean-field behavior reported for CP on infinite-dimensional (random) graphs with power-law degree distribution. Furthermore, the disorder present in the WPS lattice model is in agreement with the Luck-Harris criterion for the relevance of disorder in critical dynamics. However, despite the same wandering exponent $\omega=1/2$, the disorder effects observed for the WPS lattice are weaker than those found for uncorrelated disorder., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Many-body localization (MBL) hinders the thermalization of quantum many-body systems in the presence of strong disorder. In this work, we study the MBL regime in bond-disordered spin-1/2 XXZ spin chain, finding the multimodal distribution of entanglement entropy in eigenstates, sub-Poissonian level statistics, and revealing a relation between operators and initial states required for examining the breakdown of thermalization in the time evolution of the system. We employ a real space renormalization group scheme to identify these phenomenological features of the MBL regime that extend beyond the standard picture of local integrals of motion relevant for systems with disorder coupled to on-site operators. Thermally activated particle motion in disorder potentials is controlled by the large-$\Delta V$ tail of the distribution of height $\Delta V$ of the potential barriers created by the disorder. We employ the optimal fluctuation method to evaluate this tail for correlated quenched Gaussian potentials in one dimension in the presence of a small bias of the potential. We focus on the mean escape time (MET) of overdamped particles averaged over the disorder. We show that the bias leads to a strong (exponential) reduction of the MET in the direction along the bias. The reduction depends both on the bias, and on detailed properties of the covariance of the disorder, such as its derivatives and asymptotic behavior at large distances. We verify our theoretical predictions, as well as earlier predictions for zero bias, by performing large-deviation simulations of the potential disorder. The simulations employ correlated random potential sampling based on the circulant embedding method and the Wang-Landau algorithm, which enable us to probe probability densities smaller than $10^{-1200}$., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We have discovered analytical expressions for the probability density function (PDF) of photons that are multiply scattered in relativistic flows, under the assumption of isotropic and inelastic scattering. These expressions characterize the collective dynamics of these photons, ranging from free-streaming to diffusion regions. The PDF, defined within the light cone to ensure the preservation of causality, is expressed in a three-dimensional space at a constant time surface. This expression is achieved by summing the PDFs of photons that have been scattered $n$ times within four-dimensional spacetime. We have confirmed that this formulation accurately reproduces the results of relativistic Monte Carlo simulations.We found that the PDF in three-dimensional space at a constant time surface can be represented in a separable variable form. We demonstrate the behavior of the PDF in the laboratory frame across a wide range of Lorentz factors for the relativistic flow. When the Lorentz factor of the fluid is low, the behavior of scattered photons evolves sequentially from free propagation to diffusion, and then to dynamic diffusion, where the mean effective velocity of the photons equates to that of the fluid. On the other hand, when the Lorentz factor is large, the behavior evolves from anisotropic ballistic motion, characterized by a mean effective velocity approaching the speed of light, to dynamic diffusion., Comment: The version accepted by ApJ Letters

Despite their ever more widespread deployment throughout society, machine learning algorithms remain critically vulnerable to being spoofed by subtle adversarial tampering with their input data. The prospect of near-term quantum computers being capable of running {quantum machine learning} (QML) algorithms has therefore generated intense interest in their adversarial vulnerability. Here we show that quantum properties of QML algorithms can confer fundamental protections against such attacks, in certain scenarios guaranteeing robustness against classically-armed adversaries. We leverage tools from many-body physics to identify the quantum sources of this protection. Our results offer a theoretical underpinning of recent evidence which suggest quantum advantages in the search for adversarial robustness. In particular, we prove that quantum classifiers are: (i) protected against weak perturbations of data drawn from the trained distribution, (ii) protected against local attacks if they are insufficiently scrambling, and (iii) protected against universal adversarial attacks if they are sufficiently quantum chaotic. Our analytic results are supported by numerical evidence demonstrating the applicability of our theorems and the resulting robustness of a quantum classifier in practice. We study the relaxation of a Brownian particle with long range memory under confinement in one dimension. The particle diffuses in an arbitrary confining potential and resets at random times to previously visited positions, chosen with a probability proportional to the local time spend there by the particle since the initial time. This model mimics an animal which moves erratically in its home range and returns preferentially to familiar places from time to time. The steady state density of the position is given by the equilibrium Boltzmann-Gibbs distribution, as in standard diffusion, while the transient part of the density can be obtained through a mapping of the Fokker-Planck equation of the process to a Schr\"odinger eigenvalue problem. Due to memory, the approach at large time toward the steady state is critically self-organised, in the sense that it always follows a sluggish power-law form, in contrast to the exponential decay that characterises Markov processes. The exponent of this power-law depends in a simple way on the resetting rate and on the relaxation rate of the Brownian particle in the absence of resetting. We propose that the thermodynamics and the kinetics of state switching for the asymptotically flat black hole enclosed by a cavity can be studied in terms of the free energy landscape formalism. The generalized free energy for the black hole enclosed by a cavity in the canonical ensemble is derived by using the York's approach, where the temperature on the cavity and the charges inside the cavity are kept as the fixed parameters. By quantifying the corresponding free energy landscape, we obtain the phase diagrams for the black hole in cavity, which reveal a Hawking-Page type transition for the uncharged black hole and a Van der Waals type transition for the charged black hole. We further assume that the dynamics of black hole state switching is mutually determined by the gradient force and the stochastic force arising from the free energy landscape and the thermal noises respectively. We then derive a recurrence relation for the $n$-momentum of the first passage time distribution function, which enables the calculation of the kinetic times characterized by the mean first passage time and its relative fluctuation. Our analysis illustrates that the kinetics of black hole state switching is determined by the ensemble temperature and the barrier height on the free energy landscape.

A procedure to find optimal regimes for quantum thermal engines (QTMs) is described and demonstrated. The QTMs are modelled as the periodically-driven non-equilibrium steady states of open quantum systems, whose dynamics is approximated in this work with Markovian master equations. The action of the external agent, and the couplings to the heat reservoirs can be modulated with control functions, and it is the time-dependent shape of these control functions the object of optimisation. We study the scaling functions associated with the lightest particle mass $M_1$ in 2d Ising field theory in external magnetic field. The scaling functions depend on the scaling parameter $\xi = h/|m|^{\frac{15}{8}}$, or related parameter $\eta = m / h^{\frac{8}{15}}$. Analytic properties of $M_1$ in the high-T domain were discussed in arXiv:2203.11262. In this work, we study analyticity of $M_1$ in the low-T domain. Important feature of this analytic structure is represented by the Fisher-Langer's branch cut. The discontinuity across this branch cut determines the behavior of $M_1$ at all complex $\xi$ via associated low-T dispersion relation. Also, we put forward the "extended analyticity" conjecture for $M_1$ in the complex $\eta$-plane, similar to the analyticity of the free energy density previously proposed in arXiv:hep-th/0112167. The extended analyticity implies the "extended dispersion relation", which we verify against the numerics from the Truncated Free Fermion Approach (TFFSA), giving strong support to the conjecture., Comment: 38 pages, 13 figures

Granular materials such as sand, powders, and food grains are ubiquitous in civil engineering, geoscience, agriculture, and medicine. While the influence of friction between the grains on the static structure of these systems is well understood, its impact on the dynamics is an open problem. Here we use particle-based simulations of a granular pack under cyclic shear and discover that the relaxation time of the system is a non-monotonic function of friction. By introducing the concept of dynamic constraints, we reveal that this re-entrant dynamics is due to the competition between increasing frictional coupling and a concurrent change in the structure of the granular pack. Our theoretical approach, which unifies the dynamics of friction-less systems with frictional ones, is applicable to other systems that have a complex free energy landscape and a dynamics which involves time-dependent constraints, thus setting the stage for a description of the dynamic behavior of a large class of complex systems.

In this paper, we establish a sum rule that connects the pseudoentropy and entanglement entropy of a superposition state. Through analytical continuation of the superposition parameter, we demonstrate that the transition matrix and density matrix of the superposition state can be treated in a unified manner. Within this framework, we naturally derive sum rules for the (reduced) transition matrix, pseudo R\'enyi entropy, and pseudoentropy. Furthermore, we demonstrate the close relationship between the sum rule for pseudoentropy and the singularity structure of the entropy function for the superposition state after analytical continuation. We also explore potential applications of the sum rule, including its relevance to understanding the gravity dual of non-Hermitian transition matrices and establishing upper bounds for the absolute value of pseudoentropy., Comment: 33 pages

In a finite non-Hermitian system, the number of zero modes does not necessarily reflect the topology of the system. This is known as the breakdown of the bulk-boundary correspondence and has lead to misconceptions about the topological protection of edge modes in such systems. Here we show why this breakdown does occur and that it typically results in hidden zero modes, extremely long-lived zero energy excitations, which are only revealed when considering the singular value instead of the eigenvalue spectrum. We point out, furthermore, that in a finite multiband non-Hermitian system with Hamiltonian $H$, one needs to consider also the reflected Hamiltonian $\tilde H$, which is in general distinct from the adjoint $H^\dagger$, to properly relate the number of protected zeroes to the winding number of $H$.

We study the statistics of first passage times (FPTs) of trajectory observables in both classical and quantum Markov processes. We consider specifically the FPTs of counting observables, that is, the times to reach a certain threshold of a trajectory quantity which takes values in the positive integers and is non-decreasing in time. For classical continuous-time Markov chains we rigorously prove: (i) a large deviation principle (LDP) for FPTs, whose corollary is a strong law of large numbers; (ii) a concentration inequality for the FPT of the dynamical activity, which provides an upper bound to the probability of its fluctuations to all orders; and (iii) an upper bound to the probability of the tails for the FPT of an arbitrary counting observable. For quantum Markov processes we rigorously prove: (iv) the quantum version of the LDP, and subsequent strong law of large numbers, for the FPTs of generic counts of quantum jumps; (v) a concentration bound for the the FPT of total number of quantum jumps, which provides an upper bound to the probability of its fluctuations to all orders, together with a similar bound for the sub-class of quantum reset processes which requires less strict irreducibility conditions; and (vi) a tail bound for the FPT of arbitrary counts. Our results allow to extend to FPTs the so-called "inverse thermodynamic uncertainty relations" that upper bound the size of fluctuations in time-integrated quantities. We illustrate our results with simple examples.

Understanding the mechanisms underlying crystal formation is crucial. For most systems, crystallization typically goes through a nucleation process that involves dynamics that happen at short time and length scales. Due to this, molecular dynamics serves as a powerful tool to study this phenomenon. Existing approaches to study the mechanism often focus analysis on static snapshots of the global configuration, potentially overlooking subtle local fluctuations and history of the atoms involved in the formation of solid nuclei. To address this limitation, we propose a methodology that categorizes nucleation pathways into reactive pathways based on the time evolution of constituent atoms. Our approach effectively captures the diverse structural pathways explored by crystallizing Lennard-Jones-like particles and solidifying Ni$_3$Al, providing a more nuanced understanding of nucleating pathways. Moreover, our methodology enables the prediction of the resulting polymorph from each reactive trajectory. The dynamics of quantum systems unfolds within a subspace of the state space or operator space, known as the Krylov space. This review presents the use of Krylov subspace methods to provide a compact and computationally efficient description of quantum evolution, with emphasis on nonequilibrium phenomena of many-body systems with a large Hilbert space. It provides a comprehensive update of recent developments, focused on the quantum evolution of operators in the Heisenberg picture as well as pure and mixed states. It further explores the notion of Krylov complexity and associated metrics as tools for quantifying operator growth, their bounds by generalized quantum speed limits, the universal operator growth hypothesis, and its relation to quantum chaos, scrambling, and generalized coherent states. A comparison of several generalizations of the Krylov construction for open quantum systems is presented. A closing discussion addresses the application of Krylov subspace methods in quantum field theory, holography, integrability, quantum control, and quantum computing, as well as current open problems., Comment: 64 pages, 27 figures

Quantum information theory is plagued by the problem of regularisations, which require the evaluation of formidable asymptotic quantities. This makes it computationally intractable to gain a precise quantitative understanding of the ultimate efficiency of key operational tasks such as entanglement manipulation. Here we consider the problem of computing the asymptotic entanglement cost of preparing noisy quantum states under quantum operations with positive partial transpose (PPT). A previously claimed solution to this problem is shown to be incorrect. We construct instead an alternative solution in the form of two hierarchies of semi-definite programs that converge to the true asymptotic value of the entanglement cost from above and from below. Our main result establishes that this convergence happens exponentially fast, thus yielding an efficient algorithm that approximates the cost up to an additive error $\varepsilon$ in time $\mathrm{poly}\big(D,\,\log(1/\varepsilon)\big)$, where $D$ is the underlying Hilbert space dimension. We study the constraints imposed on the electromagnetic response of general media by microcausality (commutators of local fields vanish outside the light cone) and positivity of the imaginary parts (the medium can only absorb energy from the external field). The equations of motion for the average electromagnetic field in a medium -- the macroscopic Maxwell equations -- can be derived from the in-in effective action and the effect of the medium is encoded in the electric and magnetic permeabilities $\varepsilon(\omega,|\boldsymbol{k}|)$ and $\mu(\omega,|\boldsymbol{k}|)$. Microcausality implies analyticity of the retarded Green's functions when the imaginary part of the $4$-vector $(\omega,\boldsymbol{k})$ lies in forward light cone. With appropriate assumptions about the behavior of the medium at high frequencies one derives dispersion relations, originally studied by Leontovich. In the case of dielectrics these relations, combined with the positivity of the imaginary parts, imply bounds on the low-energy values of the response, $\varepsilon(0,0)$ and $\mu(0,0)$. In particular the quantities $\varepsilon(0,0)-1$ and $\varepsilon(0,0) - 1/\mu(0,0)$ are constrained to be positive and equal to integrals over the imaginary parts of the response. Collective behaviour in living systems is observed across many scales, from bacteria to insects, to fish shoals. Zebrafish have emerged as a model system amenable to laboratory study. Here we report a three-dimensional study of the collective dynamics of fifty zebrafish. We observed the emergence of collective behaviour changing between \yy{ordered} to randomised, upon \yy{adaptation} to new environmental conditions. We quantify the spatial and temporal correlation functions of the fish and identify two length scales, the persistence length and the nearest neighbour distance, that capture the essence of the behavioural changes. The ratio of the two length scales correlates robustly with the polarisation of collective motion that we explain with a reductionist model of self--propelled particles with alignment interactions., Comment: PLOS Comp. The Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) process describes the dynamics of Brownian particles in a confining harmonic potential, thereby constituting the paradigmatic model of overdamped, mean-reverting Langevin dynamics. Despite its widespread applicability, this model falls short when describing physical systems where the confining potential is itself subjected to stochastic fluctuations. However, such stochastic fluctuations generically emerge in numerous situations, including in the context of colloidal manipulation by optical tweezers, leading to inherently out-of-equilibrium trapped dynamics. To explore the consequences of stochasticity at this level, we introduce a natural extension of the OU process, in which the stiffness of the harmonic potential is itself subjected to OU-like fluctuations. We call this model the OU$^2$ process. We examine its statistical, dynamic, and thermodynamic properties through a combination of analytical and numerical methods. Importantly, we show that the probability density for the particle position presents power-law tails, in contrast to the Gaussian decay of the standard OU process. In turn, this causes the trapping behavior, extreme value statistics, first passage statistics, and entropy production of the OU$^2$ process to differ qualitatively from their standard OU counterpart. Due to the wide applicability of the standard OU process and of the proposed OU$^2$ generalisation, our study sheds light on the peculiar properties of stochastic dynamics in random potentials and lays the foundation for the refined analysis of the dynamics and thermodynamics of numerous experimental systems., Comment: 32 pages, 7 figures

The problem of counting polymer coverings on the rectangular lattices is investigated. In this model, a linear rigid polymer covers $k$ adjacent lattice sites such that no two polymers occupy a common site. Those unoccupied lattice sites are considered as monomers. We prove that for a given number of polymers ($k$-mers), the number of arrangements for the polymers on two-dimensional rectangular lattices satisfies simple recurrence relations. These recurrence relations are quite general and apply for arbitrary polymer length ($k$) and the width of the lattices ($n$). The well-studied monomer-dimer problem is a special case of the monomer-polymer model when $k=2$. It is known the enumeration of monomer-dimer configurations in planar lattices is #P-complete. The recurrence relations shown here have the potential for hints for the solution of long-standing problems in this class of computational complexity.

The asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) is a paradigmatic driven-diffusive system that describes the asymmetric diffusion of particles with hardcore interactions in a lattice. Although the ASEP is known as an exactly solvable model, most exact results are limited to one-dimensional systems. Recently, the exact steady state in the multi-dimensional ASEP has been proposed [1]. The research focused on the situation where the number of particles is conserved. In this paper, we consider the two-dimensional ASEP with the attachment and detachment of particles (ASEP-LK), where particle number conservation is violated. By employing the result in Ref. Recently, a novel probe to study symmetry breaking, known as entanglement asymmetry, has emerged and has been utilized to explore how symmetry is dynamically restored following quantum quenches. Interestingly, it has been shown that, in certain scenarios, greater initial symmetry breaking leads to faster restoration, akin to a quantum Mpemba effect. This study focuses on investigating the effect of mixed initial states and non-unitary dynamics on symmetry restoration. The mixedness of a state can arise from different sources. We consider dephasing or dissipative processes affecting initial pure states or unitary dynamics of initially thermal states. In the former case, the stationary state after the quench is independent of the initial configuration, resembling the phenomenology of the classical Mpemba effect. Investigating the XY spin chain model, through a combination of analytical calculations and numerical simulations, we identify the conditions for the occurrence of the quantum Mpemba effect. It turns out that this phenomenon still occurs in the presence of dissipation or at finite temperature, even though it will be eventually suppressed as the state becomes more mixed., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

We provide a framework for understanding dynamical metastability in open many-body systems of free bosons, whereby the dynamical stability properties of the system in the infinite-size (thermodynamic) limit may sharply differ from those of any finite-size truncation, and anomalous transient dynamics may arise. By leveraging pseudospectral techniques, we trace the discrepancy between asymptotic and transient dynamics to the non-normality of the underlying quadratic bosonic Lindbladian (QBL) generator, and show that two distinct flavors of dynamical metastability can arise. QBLs exhibiting type I dynamical metastability, previously discussed in the context of anomalous transient amplification [Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 245701 (2021)], are dynamically unstable in the infinite-size limit, yet stable once open boundaries are imposed. Type II-dynamically metastable QBLs, which we uncover in this work, are dynamically stable for infinite size, but become unstable under open boundary conditions for arbitrary finite system size. We exhibit representative models for both types of metastability in the dissipative, as well as the limiting closed-system (Hamiltonian) settings, and analyze distinctive physical behavior they can engender. We show that dynamical metastability manifests itself in the generation of entanglement entropy, by way of a transient which reflects the stability phase of the infinite (rather than the actual finite) system and, as a result, is directly tied to the emergence of super-volume scaling in type I systems. Finally, we demonstrate how, even in Hermitian, and especially in highly non-normal regimes, the spectral properties of an infinite-size QBL are reflected in the linear response functions of the corresponding finite QBLs, by way of resonant pseudospectral modes., Comment: 33 pages, 12 figures

Among the most iconic features of classical dissipative dynamics are persistent limit-cycle oscillations and critical slowing down at the onset of such oscillations, where the system relaxes purely algebraically in time. On the other hand, quantum systems subject to generic Markovian dissipation decohere exponentially in time, approaching a unique steady state. Here we show how coherent limit-cycle oscillations and algebraic decay can emerge in a quantum system governed by a Markovian master equation as one approaches the classical limit, illustrating general mechanisms using a single-spin model and a two-site lossy Bose-Hubbard model. In particular, we demonstrate that the fingerprint of a limit cycle is a slow-decaying branch with vanishing decoherence rates in the Liouville spectrum, while a power-law decay is realized by a spectral collapse at the bifurcation point. The competition between scrambling and projective measurements can lead to measurement-induced entanglement phase transitions (MIPT). In this work, we show that the universality class of the MIPT is drastically altered when the system is coupled to a diffusing conserved density. Specifically, we consider a 1+1d random Clifford circuit locally monitored by classically diffusing particles (``measurers''). The resulting diffusive correlations in the measurement density are a relevant perturbation to the usual space-time random MIPT critical point, producing a new universality class for this phase transition. We find ``Griffiths-like'' effects due to rare space-time regions where, e.g., the diffusive measurers have a low or high density, but these are considerably weaker than the Griffiths effects that occur with quenched randomness that produce rare spatial regions with infinite lifetime., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures + Supplementary Material (10 pages,10 figures)

Onsager's regression hypothesis makes a fundamental connection between macroscopic transport phenomena and the average relaxation of spontaneous microscopic fluctuations. This relaxation, however, is agnostic to odd transport phenomena, in which fluxes run orthogonal to the gradients driving them. To account for odd transport, we generalize the regression hypothesis, postulating that macroscopic linear constitutive laws are, on average, obeyed by microscopic fluctuations, whether they contribute to relaxation or not. From this "flux hypothesis," Green-Kubo and reciprocal relations follow, elucidating the separate roles of broken time-reversal and parity symmetries underlying various odd transport coefficients. As an application, we derive and verify the Green-Kubo relation for odd collective diffusion in chiral active matter, first in an analytically-tractable model and subsequently through molecular dynamics simulations of concentrated active spinners.

Equilibrium propagation is a recently introduced method to use and train artificial neural networks in which the network is at the minimum (more generally extremum) of an energy functional. Equilibrium propagation has shown good performance on a number of benchmark tasks. Here we extend equilibrium propagation in two directions. First we show that there is a natural quantum generalization of equilibrium propagation in which a quantum neural network is taken to be in the ground state (more generally any eigenstate) of the network Hamiltonian, with a similar training mechanism that exploits the fact that the mean energy is extremal on eigenstates. Second we extend the analysis of equilibrium propagation at finite temperature, showing that thermal fluctuations allow one to naturally train the network without having to clamp the output layer during training. We also study the low temperature limit of equilibrium propagation.

Systems with a complex dynamics like glasses or models of biological evolution are often pictured in terms of complex landscapes, with a large number of possible collective states. We show on the example of a stochastic spin model with non-reciprocal and heterogeneous interactions how the complex landscape notion can be generalized far from equilibrium, where collective states may exhibit spontaneous oscillations, often hidden by the presence of disorder. We identify relevant observables, like the density of entropy production, to unveil the presence of oscillations, and we characterize the complex landscape of our model in terms of a configurational entropy, that counts the number of nonequilibrium collective states with a given entropy production density.

We investigate the nonequilibrium dynamics induced by a finite-time linear quench in the XY chain. Initially, we examine the dynamical quantum phase transition, characterized by the nonanalytic behavior of the Loschmidt amplitude. We find distinct behaviors of DQPTs during and following the ramp. Following the ramp, the ramp crossing the critical point $h_{c}$ is the sufficient condition for the occurrence of DQPT, but it is not during the ramp. Through AIA approximation analysis, we establish that adequate distancing from the critical point is crucial for DQPT manifestation during the ramp, elucidating the absence of DQPT as the ramp gets faster. Additionally, we explore another type of dynamical phase transition, describing the long-term relaxation behavior of the order parameter. Our finding indicates that the asymptotic behavior of the time-dependent part induced by the linear quench is equivalent to that following a sudden quench, i.e., time-dependent part exhibits power-law decays of $\sim t^{-3/2}$ and $\sim t^{-1/2}$ for the ramp to the commensurate and incommensurate phases, respectively. We propose a novel approach for precision measurement utilizing an ensemble of probabilistic bits (p-bits). This method leverages the inherent fluctuations of p-bits to achieve high sensitivity in various applications, including magnetic field sensing, temperature monitoring and timekeeping. We consider polynomial long-range Ising models in one dimension, with ferromagnetic pair interactions decaying with power $2-\alpha$ (for $0 \leq \alpha < 1$), and prepared with randomly chosen boundary conditions. We show that at low temperatures in the thermodynamic limit the finite-volume Gibbs measures do not converge, but have a distributional limit, the so-called metastate. We find that there is a distinction between the values of $\alpha$ less than or larger than $\frac{1}{2}$. For moderate, or intermediate, decay $\alpha < \frac{1}{2}$, the metastate is very dispersed and supported on the set of all Gibbs measures, both extremal and non-extremal, whereas for slow decays $\alpha > \frac{1}{2}$ the metastate is still dispersed, but has its support just on the set of the two extremal Gibbs measures, the plus measure and the minus measure. The former, moderate decays case, appears to be new and is due to the occurrence of almost sure boundedness of the random variable which is the sum of all interaction (free) energies between random and ordered half-lines, when the decay is fast enough, but still slow enough to get a phase transition ($\alpha>0$); while the latter, slow decays case, is more reminiscent of and similar to the behaviour of higher-dimensional nearest-neighbour Ising models with diverging boundary (free) energies. We introduce a tensor network algorithm for the solution of $p$-spin models. We show that bond compression through rank-revealing decompositions performed during the tensor network contraction resolves logical redundancies in the system exactly and is thus lossless, yet leads to qualitative changes in runtime scaling in different regimes of the model. First, we find that bond compression emulates the so-called leaf-removal algorithm, solving the problem efficiently in the "easy" phase. Past a dynamical phase transition, we observe superpolynomial runtimes, reflecting the appearance of a core component. We then develop a graphical method to study the scaling of contraction for a minimal ensemble of core-only instances, for which leaf removal is ineffective. We find subexponential scaling, improving on the exponential scaling that occurs without compression. Our results suggest that our tensor network algorithm subsumes the classical leaf removal algorithm and simplifies redundancies in the $p$-spin model through lossless compression, all without explicit knowledge of the problem's structure., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

We investigate the impact of quenched disorder in the critical $O(2)$ vector model. We first review, in the modern language of Conformal Perturbation Theory, the random temperature perturbation in $4-\epsilon$. Then, we present a direct computation in $3d$. The pure CFT is now strongly interacting, and its CFT data are determined in recent numerical bootstrap studies. We then explore the anisotropic disorder associated with the lowest-dimension charge-$2$ scalar, which is relevant in $3d$. This perturbation breaks locally $O(2)$. The scattering cross section is the effective area of collision when two particles collide. Quantum mechanically, it is a measure of the probability for a specific process to take place. Employing wave packets to describe the scattering process, we compute the entanglement entropy in 2-to-2 scattering of particles in a general setting using the $S$-matrix formalism. Applying the optical theorem, we show that the linear entropy $\mathcal{E}_2$ is given by the elastic cross section $\sigma_{\text{el}}$ in unit of the transverse size $L^2$ of the wave packet, $\mathcal{E}_2 \sim \sigma_{\text{el}}/L^2$, when the initial states are not entangled. The result allows for dual interpretations of the entanglement entropy as an area and as a probability. Since $\sigma_{\text{el}}$ is generally believed, and observed experimentally, to grow with the collision energy $\sqrt{s}$ in the high energy regime, the result suggests a "second law" of entanglement entropy for high energy collisions. Bistable autonomous systems can be found inmany areas of science. When the intrinsic noise intensity is large, these systems exhibits stochastic transitions from onemetastable steady state to another. In electronic bistable memories, these transitions are failures, usually simulated in a Monte-Carlo fashion at a high CPU-time price. Existing closed-form formulas, relying on near-stable-steady-state approximations of the nonlinear system dynamics to estimate the mean transition time, have turned out inaccurate. Our contribution is twofold. From a unidimensional stochastic model of overdamped autonomous systems, we propose an extended Eyring-Kramers analytical formula accounting for both nonlinear drift and state-dependent white noise variance, rigorously derived from It\^o stochastic calculus. We also adapt it to practical system engineering situations where the intrinsic noise sources are hidden and can only be inferred from the fluctuations of observables measured in steady states. First numerical trials on an industrial electronic case study suggest that our approximate prediction formula achieve remarkable accuracy, outperforming previous non-Monte-Carlo approaches., Comment: Accepted for IEEE L-CSS

This dissertation explores quantum computation using qudits encoded into large spins, emphasizing the concept of quantum co-design to harness the unique capabilities of physical platforms for enhanced quantum information processing. First, we delve into the generation of high-fidelity universal gate sets for quantum computation with qudits. Leveraging principles from quantum optimal control, Rydberg physics, and the atomic structure of alkaline-earth atoms, we propose protocols for high-fidelity universal gate sets in the ground state of 87Sr with reasonable experimental parameters. Next, we analyze schemes to encode a qubit in the large spin qudits for fault-tolerant quantum computation (FTQC). By comprehending the most dominant noise in the physical system, we develop FTQC protocols that outperform the standard protocols. Finally, considering spin qudits for neutral atom quantum computation, we studied protocols for converting leakage errors to erasure errors resource efficiently. We numerically investigate the dependence of range of attractive potential on the phase separation of 2-D binary systems. Through extensive simulations and analysis, we show that when the range of attractive interactions approaches the sticky sphere limit, the system undergoes a phase separation at lower temperature. Further reduction in temperature causes the system to mix again. These mixing-demixing-mixing transitions are of first order. Such phase separation is not observed for systems with larger interaction range. The axiomatic structure of the $\kappa$-statistcal theory is proven. In addition to the first three standard Khinchin--Shannon axioms of continuity, maximality, and expansibility, two further axioms are identified, namely the self-duality axiom and the scaling axiom. It is shown that both the $\kappa$-entropy and its special limiting case, the classical Boltzmann--Gibbs--Shannon entropy, follow unambiguously from the above new set of five axioms. It has been emphasized that the statistical theory that can be built from $\kappa$-entropy has a validity that goes beyond physics and can be used to treat physical, natural, or artificial complex systems. The physical origin of the self-duality and scaling axioms has been investigated and traced back to the first principles of relativistic physics, i.e., the Galileo relativity principle and the Einstein principle of the constancy of the speed of light. It has been shown that the $\kappa$-formalism, which emerges from the $\kappa$-entropy, can treat both simple (few-body) and complex (statistical) systems in a unified way. Relativistic statistical mechanics based on $\kappa$-entropy is shown that preserves the main features of classical statistical mechanics (kinetic theory, molecular chaos hypothesis, maximum entropy principle, thermodynamic stability, H-theorem, and Lesche stability). The answers that the $\kappa$-statistical theory gives to the more-than-a-century-old open problems of relativistic physics, such as how thermodynamic quantities like temperature and entropy vary with the speed of the reference frame, have been emphasized.

The stochastic dynamics of a rigid inclusion constrained to move on a curved surface has many applications in biological and soft matter physics, ranging from the diffusion of passive or active membrane proteins to the motion of phoretic particles on liquid-liquid interfaces. Here we construct intrinsic Langevin equations for an oriented rigid inclusion on a curved surface using Cartan's method of moving frames. We first derive the Hamiltonian equations of motion for the translational and rotational momenta in the body frame. Surprisingly, surface curvature couples the linear and angular momenta of the inclusion. We then add to the Hamiltonian equations linear friction, white noise and arbitrary configuration-dependent forces and torques to obtain intrinsic Langevin equations of motion in phase space. We provide the integrability conditions, made non-trivial by surface curvature, for the forces and torques to admit a potential, thus distinguishing between passive and active stochastic motion. We derive the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation in geometric form and obtain fluctuation-dissipation relations that ensure Gibbsian equilibrium. We extract the overdamped equations of motion by adiabatically eliminating the momenta from the Fokker-Planck equation, showing how a peculiar cancellation leads to the naively expected Smoluchowski limit. The overdamped equations can be used for accurate and efficient intrinsic Brownian dynamics simulations of passive, driven and active diffusion processes on curved surfaces. Except for crystalline or random structures, an agreed definition of complexity for intermediate and hence interesting cases does not exist. We fill this gap with a notion of complexity that characterises shapes formed by any finite number of particles greater than or equal to the three needed to define triangle shapes. The resulting shape complexity is a simple scale-invariant quantity that measures the extent to which a collection of particles has a uniform or clustered distribution. As a positive-definite number with an absolute minimum realised on the most uniform distribution the particles can have, it not only characterises all physical structures from crystals to the most complex that can exist but also determines for them a measure that makes richly structured shapes more probable than bland ones. Strikingly, the criterion employed to define the shape complexity forces it to be the product of the two functions that define Newtonian universal gravitation. This suggests both the form and solutions the law of a universe of such particles should have and leads to a theory that not only determines the complexity and probability of any individual shape but also its creation from the maximally uniform shape. It does this moreover in a manner which makes it probable that the cosmological principle, according to which on a sufficiently large scale the universe should have the same appearance everywhere, holds. We present a class of two-dimensional randomized plaquette models, where the multi-spin interaction term, referred to as the plaquette term, is replaced by a single-site spin term with a probability of $1-p$. By varying $p$, we observe a ground state phase transition, or equivalently, a phase transition of the symmetry operator. We find that as we vary $p$, the symmetry operator changes from being extensive to being localized in space. These models can be equivalently understood as 1+1D randomized cellular automaton dynamics, allowing the 2D transition to be interpreted as a 1+1D dynamical absorbing phase transition. In this paper, our primary focus is on the plaquette term with three or five-body interactions, where we explore the universality classes of the transitions. Specifically, for the model with five-body interaction, we demonstrate that it belongs to the same universality class as the measurement-induced entanglement phase transition observed in 1+1D Clifford dynamics, as well as the boundary entanglement transition of the 2D cluster state induced by random bulk Pauli measurements. This work establishes a connection between transitions in classical spin models, cellular automata, and hybrid random circuits.

The one-dimensional quantum breakdown model, which features spatially asymmetric fermionic interactions simulating the electrical breakdown phenomenon, exhibits an exponential U(1) symmetry and a variety of dynamical phases including many-body localization and quantum chaos with quantum scar states. We investigate the minimal quantum breakdown model with the minimal number of on-site fermion orbitals required for the interaction, and identify a large number of local conserved charges in the model. We then reveal a mapping between the minimal quantum breakdown model in certain charge sectors and a quantum link model which simulates the $U(1)$ lattice gauge theory, and show that the local conserved charges map to the gauge symmetry generators. A special charge sector of the model further maps to the PXP model, which shows quantum many-body scars. This mapping unveils the rich dynamics in different Krylov subspaces characterized by different gauge configurations in the quantum breakdown model., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

Focusing on a famous class of interacting diffusion processes called Ginzburg-Landau (GL) dynamics, we extend the Macroscopic Fluctuations Theory (MFT) to these systems in the case where the interactions are long-range, and consequently, the macroscopic effective equations are described by non-linear fractional diffusion equations.

Polygonal billiards exhibit a rich and complex dynamical behavior. In recent years polygonal billiards have attracted great attention due to their application in the understanding of anomalous transport, but also at the fundamental level, due to its connections with diverse fields in mathematics. We explore this complexity and its consequences on the properties of particle transport in infinitely long channels made of the repetitions of an elementary open polygonal cell. Borrowing ideas from the Zemlyakov-Katok construction, we construct an interval exchange transformation classified by the singular directions of the discontinuities of the billiard flow over the translation surface associated to the elementary cell. From this, we derive an exact expression of a scattering map of the cell connecting the outgoing flow of trajectories with the unconstrained incoming flow. The scattering map is defined over a partition of the coordinate space, characterized by different families of trajectories. Furthermore, we obtain an analytical expression for the average speed of propagation of ballistic modes, describing with high accuracy the speed of propagation of ballistic fronts appearing in the tails of the distribution of the particle displacement. The symbolic hierarchy of the trajectories forming these ballistic fronts is also discussed.
