Schizophrenia, a complex neuropsychiatric disorder, manifests severe impairments in social cognition, notably in Theory of Mind (ToM), empathy, and emotion recognition, which significantly influence social competence and overall functioning. These aspects are crucial for prognosis in individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia (SZ). This study validates a comics strip paradigm for ToM and empathy assessment, the Montreal Affective Voices (MAV) for measuring emotion recognition, and a Go-NoGo task for inhibition control estimation in individuals diagnosed with SZ, comparing their performance with healthy controls. SZ participants exhibited diminished abilities in the comics strip task, especially in ToM and empathy conditions, alongside challenges in identifying emotions from vocal cues in MAV. They responded slower and tended to be less accurate in the Go-NoGo task. The validated behavioral battery addresses the limitations of previous measures and emerges as a promising tool for future investigations into the neural systems underlying social cognition in schizophrenia. Such insights can lead to the development of long-needed treatment for negative symptoms and social dysfunctions in schizophrenia.

Research on comic strip humor in linguistic studies has yet to be done much by scientists. Comic features that convey messages in pictures and words cause linguists to examine humor more in its verbal elements only. This study's objectives were: 1) creating a transcription method that linguists can use to study comics, 2) analyzing how authors create humor, and 3) describing how to understand the purpose of humor in comic strips. The corpus was a comic strip book entitled The Best of Sazae-san (Hasegawa, 2015). The data were analyzed using linguistics, narrative, and humor theories. The study's results found that the transcription method proposed in this study can translate visual into verbal narratives through three elements: The character, setting, and perspective. This research can also show how comic humor is created with a twist in the form of a punch line that subverts readers' expectations, as well as that comic strips' humor, in addition to aiming to entertain, also criticizes.

This study investigates the novel application of comic strips as a pedagogical tool to enhance speaking skills among EFL students in a junior high school setting, with a thematic focus on "Celebrating Independence Day." Drawing from a sample of students from VIII.1 class of UPT SPF SMPN 23 Makassar, the research employed pre-test and post-test measures to gauge the impact of comic strips on speaking proficiency. The findings revealed a significant improvement in students' speaking skills, with the post-test mean score (76.75) surpassing the pre-test mean score (57.02). This increase, backed by a P-value of 0.000, which is smaller than the chosen significance level (α) of 0.05, underscores the efficacy of comic strips as an innovative teaching tool. The results not only highlight the potential of comic strips in EFL instruction but also emphasize the added value of integrating cultural themes into language learning for a richer, more contextualized experience.

Background and Objectives: School students are often exposed to health risks due to insufficient knowledge of personal hygiene and its methods. Problems caused by non-observance of personal hygiene appear serious in public health and play an important role in the spread of infectious diseases and the severance of social ties. The importance of studying and using comic strip media with health topics in education is that it provides an opportunity for the students to reflect on the effectiveness of medications, the pressures on patients and their families, and even on their inner experiences. Therefore, considering the importance of personal health education in sensitive childhood and school years, the present study was conducted to investigate the effect of education by comic strip personal health media on social skills of fourth-grade elementary students.Methods: The present study is of applied type and based on quasi-experimental data collection criteria. The statistical population of the study was all fourth-grade students in Dezful in the academic year 2020-2021. The size of the statistical population was 1825 students. A total of 30 students were included in the sample and were randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups (15 in the experimental group and 15 in the control group). The tools used in this study were researcher-made comic strip media as well as the Garshasm and Priority’s (1990) Social Skills Questionnaire, which was completed in two stages: pre-test and post-test. The training program was performed in 8 sessions of 45 minutes for three weeks for the experimental group and the control group received no intervention. At the end of the intervention period, both groups were re-evaluated. In order to check the data, SPSS software (Version 22) and covariance method were analyzed. It should be noted that the assumptions of the test were tested by Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Levine tests.Findings: The findings obtained after repeated analysis of data showed that there was a significant difference between the participants in the experimental group and the control group in terms of the rate of acquisition of social skills. The social skills of students who learned personal hygiene using comic strip media were higher than that of those students in the control group. Therefore, the use of intervention method (training by personal health comic strip media) was effective on the social skills variable (P≤0.05).Conclusion: Using comic strip as an attractive visual medium to teach personal health content can strengthen the social skills of fourth-grade elementary students by actively interpreting incomplete frames of comic strip, and being actively engaged with the stories. And health narratives will interact, and as a result, their knowledge and literacy in how to create and promote desirable and healthy social skills in real-life situations will improve. Comic strip media seems to be a suitable tool and a good option for educating learners due to its objectivity and suitability to the stage of children's development; Therefore, it is suggested that the use of this new media be on the agenda of education in order to familiarize and deepen students' learning experiences in the field of social skills training.

Background: Adolescence is a phase of many physical and psychological developments. This stage is also vulnerable to the development of mental illness. Anxiety is one of the most prevalent disorders among adolescents, which mostly onsets before puberty. This study aimed to understand the perception on anxiety among adolescents and mental health professionals and develop a comic strip on anxiety. Methods: This qualitative study involved focus group discussions (FGDs) among mental health professionals and pre-university college students. The FGD data were analyzed through direct content analysis according to the predetermined broad themes. Results: Awareness regarding anxiety was poor among adolescents, and in certain situations they were found to be reluctant to seek professional help. The comic strip on anxiety was developed based on the findings of FGD based on the themes, general awareness, factors responsible, symptoms and coping, management, and barriers to seeking professional help. Conclusions: Adolescents perceived mental health as very important for their overall health. The adolescents did not know that they were going through anxiety, but they noticed that they had some mental health issues and wanted to get out of it. The article offers a systematic analysis of “quarantines”—small comic works dedicated to the pandemic and lockdown, which are transmitted in the Internet in digital form. The analysis is conducted on 3082 social cartoons collected by the Center for Social and Political History of the State Public Historical Library (CSPH of the SPHL) during the lockdown in March-June 2020. The quarantines are typologized into three categories: images (collages, original and doctored photos), aphorisms, and creolized texts (caricatures, comic strips, posters, and memes). A quantitative analysis of the collection allows to conclude that the vast majority of quarantines are creolized texts—a visual unity of image and caption. By analyzing the frequencies of the main themes represented by the quarantines (with the help of hashtags), a rating of thematic groups is compiled, where the topics “Lockdown” and “Masks” take the leading place. In all thematic groups, there are motifs both critical and loyal to the social norms of the pandemic, as well as plots and images of varying degrees of metaphoricity. Based on the analysis of quarantines collected by the Center for Social and Political History, as well as a critical review of modern studies devoted to digital folklore of the pandemic period in Russia and abroad, the main socio-cultural functions of a quarantine are singled out: overcoming social stress, adaptation to the new conditions of physical and social existence; interiorization of social norms of the pandemic. The conclusion is that quarantines have become a special, artistic method of selfhelp for society in a situation of social extreme. В статье предпринимается попытка системного анализа феномена «карантинки» — комических произведений малых форм, посвященных ситуации пандемии и локдауна, и передающихся в социальных Интернет-сетях в цифровом виде. Анализ проводится на материале коллекции социальной карикатуры Центра социально-политической истории Государственной публичной исторической библиотеки, которая была собрана во время локдауна в марте–июне 2020 года и насчитывает 3082 единицы хранения. Предложена типология «карантинок», включающая три типа документов: изображения (коллаж, «фотожаба», фотография), афоризмы, креолизованные тексты (карикатура, комикс, плакат, мем). В результате количественного анализа корпуса «карантинок» коллекции делается вывод о том, что подавляющее большинство единиц изучаемого корпуса представляет собой креолизованный текст (с его визуальным единством изображения и подписи). Исходя из хештегов коллекции, в статье проведен частотный анализ основных тем «карантинок» и составлен рейтинг тематических групп, где лидирующее место заняли тематические группы «Маски» и «Локдаун». Во всех тематических группах «карантинок» обнаруживаются как критические, так лояльные по отношению к социальным нормам пандемии мотивы, а также сюжеты и образы разной степени метафоричности. На основе анализа корпуса коллекции «карантинок» ЦСПИ ГПИБ и также критического обзора литературы по современным исследованиям цифрового фольклора пандемии в России и за рубежом автором выделяются основные социально-культурные функции «карантинки»: преодоление социального стресса, адаптация к новым условиям физического и социального существования; интериоризация социальных норм пандемии. Делается вывод о том, что «карантинка» стала особым, художественным методом самопомощи общества в ситуации социального экстремума.

This paper has discussed the concept of integrating comic strips and geoforensics into CLIL English classes at university level and its potential and relevance to modern-day university education. Our assumption is that comic strips can greatly help to embrace geoforensics as an emerging interdisciplinary art that offers a whole new and previously unthought-of perspective to young geological engineers. As modern teaching is more demanding than that which relies entirely on the traditional pedagogical system, language teachers today, especially CLIL teachers, need to include as many different sources as possible in organizing teaching process. Motivation is, among other advantages, the reason why we think it is advisable to occasionally include comics in the learning process. At the end of this study, we conclude that the comic strips, despite their advantages, are not sufficiently analysed and represented in teaching. The research suggests that students recognize both linguistic, scientific, and aesthetic values of a comic strip, but are not sufficiently familiar with the possibility of including ethical aspects or logical reasoning in this new media of teaching. Raising the teacher’s awareness of the need for introducing comics at all teaching levels of university study is yet to be analysed, and requires careful planning in order to be successfully achieved.

Covid-19 is still a health problem for the past two years. Various prevention strategies have begun to be implemented in Indonesia in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, namely from Work From Home (WFH), 3M's motto, and vaccination. Immunization coverage in Indonesia is still relatively small, which is below 50% until the second stage of vaccination. Therefore, an effort is needed to increase the coverage of COVID-19 vaccination in the third stage, which is targeting students. Students are the millennial generation who like creativity and get bored easily in learning something. This service activity aims to increase student knowledge about Covid-19 vaccination so as to increase vaccination coverage. The method used in this activity werw interactive education for 59 students from two different universities through zoom and distributing comic strip media related to three materials, including an introduction to the immune system, the covid-19 vaccine in Indonesia, and facts and hoaxes about the Covid-19 vaccine. The increase in knowledge was measured using a googleform questionnaire in the form of post-test and pre-test. The results of the activity was showed an increase in knowledge up to 70.82%. In addition, participants who have not vaccinated were willing to immunize after this activity with a percentage of 80%. The distribution of comic strip media was expected to help students remember the information and transmit it to the surrounding community groups.

THE APPLICATION OF A COMIC STRIP, TRINITY, IN CHEMISTRY EDUCATION. Faced with obstacles encountered in lessons and the search for actions that meet current educational needs, some attention has been paid to the role of comics as instructional tool. This article focuses on the use of a comic strip, Trinity: A Graphic History of the First Atomic Bomb, to develop knowledge and promote science learning. Three case studies were extracted from the comic and implemented to a group of pre-service chemistry teachers. A questionnaire was utilized to assess their perceptions about the usefulness of comics for their learning. One hundred percent of students indicated that comics helped improve their understanding of the nature of science. On the basis of the data, comic strips may be utilized as an acceptable educational tool in science education.

Transfeminist struggles in Argentina and Latin America within the context of their sociopolitical reality, have a correlation with visual narratives. Comics don’t only represent what is at stake in thought and activism, but also redefine themselves, finding their own anti-hegemonic logics of operation. Femimutancia’s comics allow us to approach certain ideas in which transfeminisms of the south are anchored, which are articulated in slogans heard in the streets and read in social media: «no transvestite, no feminism», «the personal is political».... The production of this non-binary author help us to explore the theoretical bases of these political slogans, elaborated by certain referents of the movement, such as Judith Butler, Simone de Beauvoir and Carol Hanisch.

Speaking skill is a very complex skill because it involves other skills. Especially in BIPA learning, relevant strategies are needed as an alternative to learn BIPA. Therefore, this study is intended to describe the results of learning process by using comic strip toward speaking practice. Based on the tracing of previous studies, it was not found any research related to the use of comic strips in learning to speak BIPA. The method used in this research is qualitative. The participants in this study were South Korean BIPA learners in intermediate levels of ability. The results of the data analysis show that learning to speak using comic strip can be an alternative in teaching BIPA. This can be seen in all activities which run effectively. In addition, learners also give very positive responses during learning

A Humument (1966-2016), Tom Phillips’s masterwork, is an artist's book which falls under the category of found text by virtue of its compositional strategies. The book indeed consists in a revisitation and a détournement of every single page of a Victorian novel entitled A Human Document, published in 1892 by a certain William H. Mallock. Each page of A Humument constitutes a verbo-iconic complex in which the words isolated by Phillips and the various visual elements with which he covers the source text come into interaction, in often very elaborate configurations. The hybrid constellations patiently developed by Phillips are usually grounded in a very broad intertextual network which incorporates the established arts (literature, painting, music, etc.) alongside other artistic forms considered minor, including comics. The aim of our essay is to study as closely as possible Phillips’s re-appropriations of codes specific to comics, which he mobilizes in ways which alternate between the parodic and the poetic. Our analysis will thus focus on the formal hybridizations that Phillips operates on several pages of his work; it will also give us the opportunity to interrogate the necessarily problematic relationships which potentially unite comics and avant-gardist practices at the intersection of verbal and iconic registers.

In 1937, Al Capp introduced Sadie Hawkins Day in his Li'l Abner comic strip. In its first year, Americans embraced the day with girl-chase-boy races and girl-ask-boy fall dances. Cream of Wheat used Sadie Hawkins to sell their cereal, further entrenching it in American life. Sadie Hawkins purported to be an empowering opportunity for girls. However, a belief that men feared marriage, even to beautiful women, and that women were always desperate to be dating and married, fueled the passion for this traditional, heteronormative phenomenon. Spanish animation went through a Golden Age after the Civil War (1936–1939). No fewer than four feature films were made in seven years. The making of animated cartoons in Barcelona began in the 1920s, reaching a technical zenith in the 1940s through the efforts of press illustrators and comic strip authors. This paper examines the development of Spanish animation language through one of Josep Escobar's comic strips. Escobar shows how illustrations could be used to explain technical matters to children. Using comic strips to spread technical know-how was uncommon in post-Civil War Spain. It is time to revisit the history of Spanish animation through the eyes of a pioneering comic strip author who had closely followed American and European advances in the field from the early days. In this article, the author returns to the study of Quentin Tarantino's 'cartoonism' that appeared in animation 2(2) in 2007. The focus here, as in Chris Pallant's original essay, is on how filmic live action in Tarantino's work displays the diegetic conventions of the cartoon, namely, its (1) hyperbolic, (2) graphic novel and (3) comic strip violence. The article adopts Pallant's interpretive framework in analysing Tarantino's Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood (2019), only this time supplements the analysis with a consideration of the film's dramatic content. Drawing on Aristotle's Poetics the author explores whether cartoon violence in Tarantino's film is inversely related to drama and, more generally, speculates as to whether the cartoon form is inherently non- or anti-dramatic through the 'private' and commercial manner of its consumption. Religious content may be communicated by means of a comic strip combining image- and text-based narration. The article focuses on the implicitly religious presentation of a completely profane image series through an analysis of a Czech comic strip about a club of five boys. As opposed to the interpretation of a comic strip as a fictive world with an ontological status of unrealised possibilities, this article prefers the category of a possible world realised through the reader's experience. In this way, the distinctive world of comics provides a platform similar to the Platonic ideas or Jungian archetypes, linking the profane and sacred spheres. A completely non-religious comic strip created by an author indifferent to religion may thus be understood as a communication of the values and ideas of implicit religion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Starting from the evaluative component as something intrinsic to human existence and language, in this article, we propose an analytical reflection on the axiological concepts of dialogism -- value judgment, extraverbal situation, intonation -- arising from the studies of the Bakhtin Circle, with emphasis on the last two, in particular. The reflection is based on a dialogical conception of language, with emphasis on the socio-historical approach, and presents itself in three ways: a) by the theoretical discussion about axiology; b) by the analysis of a text of the genre Comic Strip, in which we investigate the notions of value embodied in the chosen text; c) by the elaboration of reading questions for the genre analyzed, focusing on teaching reading in the classroom. In the analysis of the selected Comic Strip, we mainly considered verbal statements, extraverbal and intonational, and we observed judgments of different values about the place that the black community can and should occupy in our society. A relatively large share of students often struggles in learning fundamental operations on integers because they express general dislike to its context for it has numerous rules that lead to confusion. In this perspective, the study proposed a teacher-made comic strip entitled Numerolandia: The Chosen One as an alternative way to increase and strengthen students’ knowledge and understanding of the fundamental operations on integers. It aimed to investigate its effectiveness to the identified bottom 20 students (based on the latest average in mathematics) of Grade Seven section Amethyst of Pangdan National High School, Catbalogan City during S.Y. 2017-2018. Quasi-experimental research design with one group pre-test post-test design was used. Thus, the comic strip was given to the student-participants for them to read and answer all the activities provided in it, and two questionnaires were served: one was about the assessment on fundamental operations on integers, and another was about the extent of acceptance on the comic strip. Thus, it was found out that the comic strip was an effective way of improving students’ knowledge and skills as it showed a notable positive 7.7 increase in their scores when they were exposed to this intervention and as to the degree of acceptance, based on the given indicators the student participants agreed to accept it strongly. Therefore, it is recommended that Mathematics teachers should innovate their teaching styles and strategies to fortify the students’ learning process like the use of a comic strip.

The Czech cartoonist, journalist and writer Ondřej Sekora (1899-1967) created many characters for children, but he wrote and drew comic strips for adult readers, too. His longest and most popular strip series was called Hnát and Patrčka (Long Leg and Little Leg) and was published in the Lidové noviny newspaper in the years 1926-1933. In 2012, the transgender Israeli-Argentinian performance artist Effy Beth wrote in the front page of her only comic strip, TRANSita rápido – TRANSita lento, the rhetorical question: “2012! Qué no es ahora el fin del mundo?” According to the New Age interpretation of the Mayan calendar, 2012 was supposed to mark the end of the world. Associated with a non-fiction narrative that focuses on the everyday challenges queer people suffer from in this society, the question can however be understood as more than a circumstantial reference. In her comic-strip, Effy Beth narrates her transgender identity as an apocalyptic one. This article examines the role of the illustrator Joan Vila i Pujol (D’Ivori) (1890–1947) in folk literature, with special focus to his collaborations in the journal Virolet, a children’s supplement of En Patufet, published by Baguñà between 1922 and 1931. Among them, this article pays attention to the adaptation in the form of a comic strip of some of the folktales originally published by the Grimm Brothers in the Kinderund Hausmärchen, before the appearance of children’s and youth journals that will incorporate comic book as a regular artistic form.
