9. Ultrasonic methods for the characterization of additively manufactured 316L stainless steel

Abstract

This research utilizes linear and nonlinear ultrasonic techniques to establish a linkage between microstructure and macroscale mechanical properties of additively manufactured (AM) stainless steel 316L samples. The specimens are manufactured using two methods: laser-powder bed fusion and traditional wrought manufacturing. Using the nonlinear ultrasonic method of second harmonic generation, the acoustic nonlinearity parameter is estimated in samples with different heat treatment levels intended to alter microstructural and mechanical properties. Linear ultrasonic parameters including wave speed and resonant frequency are additionally measured. Mechanical properties are obtained through tensile testing of coupons corresponding to the test samples. Microstructural information for the samples is obtained using electron backscatter diffraction to help elucidate the relationships between microstructure, mechanical properties, and ultrasonic response. Results indicate correlations between the nonlinearity parameter and both ultimate tensile strength and yield strength, where nonlinearity generally decreases as sample strength increases, particularly in the AM samples. We hypothesize that microstructural evolution of grain characteristics across different heat treatments influences trends in measured nonlinearity, as well as substructures at smaller scales such as dislocations. These results show promising evidence for the feasibility of AM parts qualification using nondestructive nonlinear ultrasonic testing.

Abstract

The presence of multiple (5-100) colorectal adenomas suggests an inherited predisposition, but the genetic aetiology of this phenotype is undetermined if patients test negative for Mendelian polyposis syndromes such as familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and MUTYH-associated polyposis (MAP). We investigated whether 18 common colorectal cancer (CRC) predisposition single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) could help to explain some cases with multiple adenomas who phenocopied FAP or MAP, but had no pathogenic APC or MUTYH variant. No multiple adenoma case had an outlying number of CRC SNP risk alleles, but multiple adenoma patients did have a significantly higher number of risk alleles than population controls (P = 5.7 × 10-7). The association was stronger in those with ≥ 10 adenomas. The CRC SNPs accounted for 4.3% of the variation in multiple adenoma risk, with three SNPs (rs6983267, rs10795668, rs3802842) explaining 3.0% of the variation. In FAP patients, the CRC risk score did not differ significantly from the controls, as we expected given the overwhelming effect of pathogenic germline APC variants on the phenotype of these cases. More unexpectedly, we found no evidence that the CRC SNPs act as modifier genes for the number of colorectal adenomas in FAP patients. In conclusion, common colorectal tumour risk alleles contribute to the development of multiple adenomas in patients without pathogenic germline APC or MUTYH variants. This phenotype may have 'polygenic' or monogenic origins. The risk of CRC in relatives of multiple adenoma cases is probably much lower for cases with polygenic disease, and this should be taken into account when counselling such patients. © 2015 Macmillan Publishers Limited All rights reserved.

18. Effect of expiratory positive airway pressure on tidal volume during non-invasive ventilation.

Abstract

During non-invasive ventilation (NIV), tidal volume (Vt) will depend upon the difference between inspiratory and expiratory positive airway pressure (IPAP and EPAP, respectively), provided the respiratory muscles are relaxed and the lungs and chest wall therefore move along their passive pressure–volume curves. To test this hypothesis, we studied the effect of increasing EPAP during pressure-controlled modes of NIV in 30 long-term ventilator users (10 each with scoliosis, obesity hypoventilation or neuromuscular disorders). While maintaining the same IPAP, addition of 5 cmH2O of EPAP reduced mean Vt by 167 ml; 10 cmH2O reduced Vt by 367 ml. This pattern was seen in all three patient groups. EPAP has several potential advantages, for example maintaining upper airway patency, preventing basal atelectasis and facilitating triggering. EPAP does, however, appear to reduce Vt. Decreasing EPAP is an alternative to increasing IPAP if measurements of gas exchange during NIV indicate that ventilation is inadequate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

19. Long-term non-invasive ventilation in muscular dystrophy: Trends in use over 25 years in a home ventilation unit.

Abstract

Long-term non-invasive ventilation (NIV) was introduced in the 1980s, initially mainly for patients with poliomyelitis, muscular dystrophy (MD) or scoliosis. The obesity-hypoventilation syndrome has since become the commonest reason for referral to most centres providing home-NIV. Patients with MD are numerically a much smaller part of the workload, but as their disease progresses the need for ventilatory support changes and they require regular comprehensive assessment of their condition. We have examined the trend in MD use of home-NIV in our unit over the last 25 years. The number of new referrals appears to be stabilizing at around 20–25 over a 5-year period, equivalent to approximately 0.5 per 100,000 of population per year. The mean age at commencement of home-NIV is now 37.5 years, with 5-year survival rates of 70–75%. Ten-year survival rates are just over 40%. The distance of usual place of residence from our unit is fairly stable, currently at a mean of 27 km. Excellent survival rates mean that patients with MD, while numerically small, are likely to remain an important part of the workload of centres providing home-NIV. 31. Development and validation of cryogenic foam insulation for LH2 subsonic transports

Abstract

Fourteen foam insulation specimens were tested. Some were plain foam while others contained flame retardants, chopped fiberglass reinforcement and/or vapor barriers. The thermal performance of the insulation was determined by measuring the rate at which LH2 boiled from an aluminum tank insulated with the test material. The test specimens were approximately 50 mm (2 in.) thick. They were structurally scaled so that the test cycle would duplicate the maximum thermal stresses predicted for the thicker insulation of an aircraft liquid hydrogen fuel tank during a typical subsonic flight. The simulated flight cycle of approximately 10 minutes duration heated the other insulation surface to 316 K (110 F) and cooled it to 226 K (20 F) while the inner insulation surface remained at liquid hydrogen temperature of 20 K (-423 F). Two urethane foam insulations exceeded the initial life goal of 2400 simulated flight cycles and sustained 4400 cycles with only minor damage. The addition of fiberglass reinforcement of flame retardant materials to an insulation degraded thermal performance and/or the life of the foam material. Installation of vapor barriers enhanced the structural integrity of the material but did not improve thermal performance. All of the foams tested were available materials; none were developed specifically for LH2 service.

Abstract

An economical, lightweight, safe, efficient, reliable, and reusable insulation system was developed for hypersonic cruise vehicle hydrogen fuel tanks. Results indicate that, a nitrogen purged, layered insulation system with nonpermeable closed-cell insulation next to the cryogenic tank and a high service temperature fibrous insulation surrounding it, is potentially an attractive solution to the insulation problem. For the postulated hypersonic flight the average unit weight of the purged insulation system (including insulation, condensate and fuel boil off) is 6.31 kg/sq m (1.29 psf). Limited cyclic tests of large specimens of closed cell polymethacrylimide foam indicate it will withstand the expected thermal cycle.

To quantify nonresponse bias and estimate its potential impact, the authors compared census-based socioeconomic and demographic factors and geographic locations among respondents and nonrespondents in a multicenter case-control study of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (1998-2000). Using a geographic information system, the authors mapped current addresses and linked them to the 2000 US Census database to determine group-level demographic and socioeconomic information. They used logistic regression analysis to compute the risk of being a nonrespondent, separately for cases and controls. They used spatial scan methods to evaluate spatial clustering at each study center. Among cases at one or more centers, nonresponse was significantly associated with non-White race, lower household income, a greater proportion of multiple-unit housing, fewer years of education, and living in a more urbanized area. For most factors, the authors observed similar patterns among controls, although findings were mostly nonsignificant. They found two nonrandom elliptical clusters in Los Angeles, California, and Detroit, Michigan, that disappeared after adjustment for the demographic factors. The authors determined the bias in non-Hodgkin lymphoma risk associated with census-tract educational level by comparing risks among respondents and all subjects. The bias was 8%, indicating that the socioeconomic and demographic differences between respondents and nonrespondents did not result in a large bias in the risk estimate for education. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Factors related to DNA damage and altered immunologic responses, such as reactive oxygen species production, are associated with the risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). OBJECTIVE: The aim was to evaluate NHL risk with intakes of vegetables, fruit, and nutrients involved in antioxidant activities. DESIGN: Incident case subjects aged 20-74 y were identified between 1998 and 2000 from a National Cancer Institute-sponsored study by using four Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results registries. Control subjects, who were selected by random dialing (<65 y) and from Medicare files (>/=65 y), were matched to cases by age, center, race, and sex. Of 1321 case and 1057 control subjects who enrolled, dietary data were collected on a subset (466 cases and 391 controls). Carotenoid intakes were estimated by using updated values from the US Department of Agriculture nutrient databases. Unconditional logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs. RESULTS: NHL risk was inversely associated with higher number of weekly servings of all vegetables (multivariable OR for highest compared with lowest quartile: 0.58; 95% CI: 0.35, 0.95; P for trend = 0.04), green leafy vegetables (OR: 0.59; 95% CI: 0.36, 0.96; P for trend = 0.01), and cruciferous vegetables (OR: 0.62; 95% CI: 0.39, 1.00; P for trend = 0.05) and with higher daily intakes of lutein and zeaxanthin (OR: 0.54; 95% CI: 0.32, 0.91; P for trend = 0.06) and zinc (OR: 0.58; 95% CI: 0.36, 0.91; P for trend = 0.02). An effect modification by exercise and NHL subtype was observed with some food groups and nutrients.
