Novel insights into habitat suitability for two Unionida freshwater mussels, Castalia ambigua Lamarck, 1819 (Hyriidae) and Anodontites elongatus (Swainson, 1823) (Mycetopodidae), are presented on the basis of hydraulic variables linked with the riverbed in six 500‐m reaches in an eastern Amazonian river basin. Within the reaches, there was strong habitat heterogeneity in hydrodynamics and substrate composition. In addition, we investigated stressors based on landscape modification that are associated with declines in mussel density. We measured hydraulic variables for each 500‐m reach, and landscape stressors at two spatial scales (subcatchment and riparian buffer forest). We used the Random Forest algorithm, a tree‐based model, to predict the hydraulic variables linked with habitat suitability for mussels, and to predict which landscape stressors were most associated with mussel density declines. Both mussel species were linked with low substrate heterogeneity and greater riverbed stability (low Froude and Reynolds numbers), especially at high flow (low stream power). Different sediment grain size preferences were observed between mussel species: Castalia ambigua was associated with medium sand and Anodontites elongatus with medium and fine sand. Declines in mussel density were associated with modifications linked to urbanization at small scales (riparian buffer forest), especially with percent of and distance from rural settlements, distance to the nearest street, and road density. In summary, the high variance explained in both hydraulic and landscape models indicated high predictive power, suggesting that our findings may be extrapolated and used as a baseline to test hypotheses of habitat suitability in other Amazonian rivers for Castalia ambigua and Anodontites elongatus and also for other freshwater mussel species. Our results highlight the urgent need for aquatic habitat conservation to maintain sheltered habitats during high flow as well as mitigate the effects of landscape modifications at the riparian buffer scale, both of which are important for maintaining dense mussel populations and habitat quality., Random Forest algorithms with complex hydraulic variables and landscape stressors predicted that Amazonian mussels are associated with riverbed stability at high and low flows and mussel density is higher with low substrate heterogeneity and hydrodynamic energy. Local riparian buffer modification by urbanization leads to mussel density declines, and there is an urgent need for landscape and riverscape management and conservation for maintenance of mussel populations and habitat quality.

Mussels provide important ecological functions in freshwater ecosystems but the associations between Amazonian mussels, macroinvertebrate assemblage and habitat quality remain poorly understood. We investigated whether changes in macroinvertebrate assemblage structure and ecological functioning were associated with mussel presence. We compared sites with and without mussels, with similar habitat conditions, in an eastern Amazonian river, using field measurements of macroinvertebrate structure, hydrological variables and sediment organic matter, and laboratory experiments of mussel clearance rate and biodeposition. Sites with mussels were associated with higher macroinvertebrate abundance and number of taxa, especially for trichopterans Marilia (shredder), Oecetis (predator) and Antarctoecia (collector). Decreased chlorophyll-a in the water column and increased sediment organic matter were positively associated with mussel presence. Laboratory experiments corroborated these patterns, which were stronger with higher mussel density. Mussel filtration and biodeposition may be associated with habitat quality for other invertebrates by lowering phytoplankton density in the water column and increasing inputs of sediment organic matter. This suggests a potential role of freshwater mussels in ecosystem function associated with high taxonomic and functional diversity in the macroinvertebrate assemblages of an eastern Amazon river, enhancing the already high mussel conservation priority.

Oyster culture has benefited traditional coastal communities along the Amazon macrotidal mangrove coast of Pará state in Brazil since 2006. Currently, seven oyster culture units in five municipalities are expanding production, but with no environmental monitoring, which is important for the control of the impacts of oyster culture on waters as well as for oyster management and conservation. Seasonal variation in environmental characteristics of the water was evaluated at all oyster culture units in Pará, from September to November 2013 (dry season) and February to April 2014 (wet season), to generate baseline data to evaluate future impacts and aid strategic planning, such as diversifying seed production. Salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, oxidation-reduction potential, depth, temperature, and chlorophyll-a concentration were measured during flooding and ebbing tides, and compared between seasons and among culture units using uni- and multivariate statistics. All variables were significantly higher in the dry season, except depth, which was significantly greater in the wet season. Mean salinity, which varied from 2.4 to 46, explained most of the variation among culture units in relation to season, sampling date within each season and tidal state. However, dissolved oxygen, pH and depth were also important. Oyster culture units in Pará may be suitable for sustainable harvesting of seed/spat from the wild (lower salinity and pH), or for on-growing (higher salinity, higher pH, and greater depth). Seasonal variation is sufficient to allow both activities at most units at appropriate times of the year, which would help increase oyster production in Pará. RESUMO A ostreicultura beneficia comunidades costeiras tradicionais ao longo da costa do manguezal de macro-marés amazônico do Estado do Pará no Brasil desde 2006. Atualmente, sete cultivos em cinco municípios expandem sua produção, mas sem monitoramento ambiental, importante para verificar impactos da ostreicultura sobre as águas, mas também para o manejo e conservação de ostras. A variação sazonal nas características ambientais da água foi avaliada em todos os cultivos do Pará, de setembro a novembro de 2013 (estação seca) e fevereiro a abril de 2014 (estação chuvosa), para gerar dados de base para avaliar futuros impactos e ajudar no planejamento estratégico, como a diversificação da produção de sementes. Salinidade, oxigênio dissolvido, pH, potencial de oxidação-redução, profundidade, temperatura e concentração de clorofila-a foram medidas durante as marés inundantes e vazantes, e comparadas entre estações e unidades de cultivo usando estatísticas uni- e multivariadas. Todas as variáveis foram significativamente mais elevadas na estação seca, exceto profundidade, que foi significativamente maior na estação chuvosa. Salinidade média, que variou de 2,4 a 46, explicou a maior parte da variação entre as unidades de cultivo em relação à estação, data de amostragem dentro de cada estação e estado das marés. No entanto, oxigênio dissolvido, pH e profundidade também foram importantes. As unidades de cultivo de ostras no Pará são apropriadas para colheita sustentável de sementes na natureza (menor salinidade e pH) ou para engorda (maior salinidade, maior pH e maior profundidade). A variação sazonal permite ambas atividades na maioria das unidades, no período apropriado do ano, e ajudaria a aumentar a produção de ostras no Pará.

Shell shape variation of the freshwater mussel Castalia ambigua in relation to environmental and genetic drivers remains unresolved in South America. Along an increasing upstream to downstream hydrological gradient in the Caeté River, eastern Amazon, Brazil, we evaluated two co-occurring morphotypes of C. ambigua: the first is elongated and compressed; the second is rounded and inflated. We performed multivariate shape analysis on the lateral view of the right valve and the umbonal view, to identify potential ecophenotypic trends. We also investigated whether the degree of shell inflation was associated with sexual dimorphism. Castalia ambigua shell shape differed along the hydrological gradient and between morphotypes. However, in high hydraulic energy habitats the two morphotypes tend to converge. Inflated shells of C. ambigua corresponded to female specimens, implying that shell shape variation in low hydraulic energy habitats was associated with sexual dimorphism. We found strong evidence of ecophenotypic plasticity and variation in sexual dimorphism in the freshwater mussel C. ambigua, associated with a hydrological gradient. Ecophenotypic plasticity appears to override sex-linked shell shape determination in high energy habitats. Differences in shell shape and the identification of ecomorphotypes are important for management efforts, such as protecting the specific habitats associated with both morphotypes.

Aim The variability in density and species diversity of decapod crustaceans was investigated on four islands with different degrees of anthropogenic disturbance around the city of Belém, State of Pará. Methods Samples were obtained from 15 creeks using artisanal traps, every three months between October 2013 and May 2014 on Combu, Onças, Cotijuba and Mosqueiro islands. Results Salinity and temperature little varied, which is common for a tropical Amazon estuary strongly influenced by freshwater inflow. A total of 8,367 decapods were captured, with one record of an exotic species Penaeus monodon. In all seasons, decapod density and richness tended to increase from Combu to Mosqueiro, with increasing proximity to the sea and higher salinity and pH. Except for Combu, species richness and Margalef diversity tended to be slightly greater in the wet season at all islands, especially Onças. Eveness and Shannon diversity did not vary greatly between seasons but were lowest at Onças in the dry season and highest at Combu, decreasing to Mosqueiro, in the wet season. In general, ecological indices are similar in the dry and transition dry to wet seasons, and in the wet season, dominance occurs at Mosqueiro Island. Macrobrachium acanthurus, C. bocourti and P. gracillis were associated with the wet season, whereas M. surinamicum prefers the dry season. M. amazonicum and Macrobrachium sp. have no well-defined seasonal pattern of occurrence at all the islands. Conclusions Despite anthropogenic disturbances and proximity to large human populations, especially on Mosqueiro Island, the density and diversity of decapod crustaceans appear to be reasonably unaffected for the moment. Resumo: Objetivo A variabilidade na densidade e diversidade de espécies de crustáceos decápodes foi investigada em quatro ilhas com diferentes graus de perturbação antropogênica em torno da cidade de Belém, Estado do Pará. Métodos Foram obtidas amostras de 15 canais de maré utilizando armadilhas artesanais, a cada três meses, entre outubro de 2013 e maio de 2014 nas ilhas Combu, Onças, Cotijuba e Mosqueiro. Resultados A salinidade e a temperatura variaram pouco, o que é comum em um estuário amazônico tropical fortemente influenciado pelo influxo de água doce. Foram capturados um total de 8.367 decápodes, com um registro de uma espécie exótica, Penaeus monodon. Em todas as estações, a densidade e riqueza de decápodes aumentou de Combu para Mosqueiro, com a crescente proximidade do mar e maior salinidade e pH. Com exceção de Combu, a riqueza de espécies e diversidade de Margalef tendeu a ser ligeiramente maior na estação chuvosa em todas as ilhas, especialmente em Onças. A Equitabilidade e a diversidade de Shannon foram semelhantes entre as estações, mas eram mais baixas em Onças na estação seca e mais alta em Combu, diminuindo para Mosqueiro na estação chuvosa. Em geral, os índices ecológicos são semelhantes na estação seca e na transição da seca para a estação chuvosa, na estação chuvosa a dominância ocorre na Ilha de Mosqueiro. M. acanthurus, C. bocourti e P. gracillis foram associadas à estação das chuvas, enquanto que M. surinamicum prefere a estação seca. M. amazonicum e Macrobrachium sp. não têm um padrão de ocorrência sazonal definido em todas as ilhas. Conclusões Apesar das perturbações antropogênicas e da proximidade a grandes populações humanas, especialmente na Ilha do Mosqueiro, a densidade e diversidade de crustáceos decápodes parecem ser razoavelmente não afetadas no momento.

Mussels have important ecological functions in freshwater ecosystems, but populations are declining in many rivers worldwide. In the Amazon, which is undergoing widespread human-mediated alterations, information on mussel ecology is lacking. We investigated whether declines in mussel density, due to exploitation, are associated with lower macroinvertebrate assemblage taxon richness and modified habitat functioning in an Amazonian river. Between 2015 and 2017, macroinvertebrate metrics of abundance and number of families, and related habitat variables, were compared between exploited and unexploited mussel beds in the Caete river, northeastern Para state, Brazil. Except for Chironomidae abundance, which increased, other macroinvertebrate metrics decreased in exploited mussel beds, especially abundances of shredders and predators. Medium and high mussel densities appear to support abundant and diverse macroinvertebrate assemblages. Macroinvertebrate decreases were mainly correlated with lower organic matter in the sediment and higher dissolved solids in the water column, due to losses in mussel biodeposition and filtration functions. Amazonian freshwater mussel density is a useful indicator of abundant and diverse macroinvertebrate assemblages, and mussel beds may help prioritize locations for habitat conservation in Amazonian rivers, and indirectly for fishes that are essential for mussel dispersion. Aquatic management efforts should explicitly include mussel beds and their diverse associated macroinvertebrate assemblages.

Triplodon corrugatus is a freshwater bivalve (Hyriidae) endemic to the Amazon, Orinoco and Tocantins basins, and the Piria river. Our understanding of hyriid diversity at, and below, the species level, remains poor. The genetic diversity of T. corrugatus from the Tapajos, Amazon, Tocantins, Irituia and Piria rivers in the north-eastern Brazilian Amazon was investigated. Except for the Irituia, where a single COII–COI haplotype had been fixed, all the other populations had medium to high haplotype diversities, and all populations had low nucleotide diversities. Pairwise fixation indices indicated that all populations were structured, except for comparisons between the Tapajos and Amazon, and the Amazon and Tocantins rivers, which may be explained by a stepping-stone model of migration. AMOVA detected that 81.28% of the variation was among populations. However, STRUCTURE analyses corroborated only the Piria river specimens as comprising a distinct population, which is being maintained by allopatry due to the current isolation between the Piria, and the Amazon and Tocantins basins.

Shipping has facilitated dispersion of exotic marine species, the genetic diversity of which may allow determination of their geographic origins. The economically important African brown mussel (Perna perna) is widely distributed along the southeastern and southern Brazilian coasts, and for which information on genetic diversity and origins is scarce. Five populations, along 2,500 km of Brazilian coast, were genetically characterized to test for homogeneity, verify haplotype and nucleotide diversity levels, and infer relationships among Brazilian and African P. perna. Mitochondrial COI gene sequences of 488 bp were obtained from 158 Brazilian P. perna, and from GenBank for other locations. The nuclear fragment rRNA18S-ITS1 was used as a species-specific marker. The five Brazilian locations were homogeneous, being composed of two mitochondrial haplogroups: haplogroup 1, with low genetic diversity, was linked to Tunisia, Morocco, and Mauritania, and haplogroup 2, with high genetic diversity, shared haplotypes with Brazil, Venezuela, western South Africa, Namibia and Angola. Haplotypes from southeastern Africa and from Oman were not found in Brazil. Patterns in genetic structure, diversity, and haplotype relationships of haplogroup 2 appear related to past trade routes between former African colonies and Brazil, whereas the low diversity of haplogroup 1 suggests more recent invasions.

The current phylogenetic framework for the South American Hyriidae is solely based on morphological data. However, freshwater bivalve morphology is highly variable due to both genetic and environmental factors. The present study used both mitochondrial (COI and 16S) and nuclear (18S-ITS1) sequences in molecular phylogenetic analyses of nine Neotropical species of Hyriidae, collected from 15 South American rivers, and sequences of hyriids from Australia and New Zealand obtained from GenBank. The present molecular findings support traditional taxonomic proposals, based on morphology, for the South American subfamily Hyriinae, currently divided in three tribes: Hyriini, Castaliini and Rhipidodontini. Phylogenetic trees based on COI nucleotide sequences revealed at least four geographical groups of Castalia ambigua: northeast Amazon (Piriá, Tocantins and Caeté rivers), central Amazon, including C. quadrata (Amazon and Aripuanã rivers), north (Trombetas river), and C. ambigua from Peru. Genetic distances suggest that some specimens may be cryptic species. Among the Hyriini, a total evidence data set generated phylogenetic trees indicating that Paxyodon syrmatophorus and Prisodon obliquus are more closely related, followed by Triplodon corrugatus. The molecular clock, based on COI, agreed with the fossil record of Neotropical hyriids. The ancestor of both Australasian and Neotropical Hyriidae is estimated to have lived around 225million years ago.

The mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) was sequenced from Mytella charruana (N = 243) at 10 Brazilian coastal localities to search for cryptic species, doubly uniparental inheritance and investigate genetic population structure and demography. Three haplogroups were found: two matrilinear (A and B) in males and females, and one patrilinear (C) found only in males. The p-distances were 0.0624 (A and B), 0.2097 (A and C) and 0.2081 (B and C). Coalescence of M. charruana occurred around 12.5 Mya, and the origins of the lineages were 3.4 and 4 Mya (matrilinear A and B) and 51.2 Mya (patrilinear), which split before the separation of the genera Perna and Mytella. All individuals from the northern coast of Brazil belonged to haplogroup A, whereas haplogroup B predominated among individuals from the eastern and northeastern coasts, with one exception, Goiana. Haplogroup C was found in males from the northern to the eastern coast. GenBank sequences of M. charruana from Colombia, Ecuador and four populations introduced to the USA joined Brazilian haplogroup B. Nuclear gene 18S-ITS1 sequences confirmed that all specimens belong to the same species. Four populations from the northern coast of Brazil were homogenous with evidence of recent population expansion. All populations from the northeastern and eastern coasts of Brazil were significantly structured (pairwise FST and AMOVA). The heterogeneity among Brazilian populations requires that relocation for aquaculture be preceded by genetic identification of the haplogroups. Differences in salinity and temperature may have selected for distinct lineages of mussels and changing conditions in coasts and estuaries may allow only resistant lineages of mussel to persist with the loss of others. In the light of global climate change, more detailed data on temperature, pH, salinity and local currents could help explain the genetic structuring observed among populations of Brazilian M. charruana.

Man-made forest edges affect tree community composition and structure, but there is little information on the effects of natural edges. To detect tree community changes related to natural edges, we investigated a terrestrial forest island, bordered by grassland and mangrove landscapes, on the Brazilian Amazon coast. Forest structure and tree species composition were examined in 10-m-wide and 100-m-long plots from the forest edge to the interior in relation to both landscapes (8 grassland and 4 mangrove plots). Elevation and soil quality did not reveal strong spatial variability; tidal inundation established a boundary for forest expansion without influencing the forest interior. The tree community consisted of 82 species. No distinct changes in vegetation structure and composition with distance from the border were detected. Ordination procedures gave weak indications for shifts in community composition with distance from the edge and in respect to edge type. Single species occurred more frequently either close to or more distant from the grassland-forest interface. No such tendencies were detected at the mangrove-terrestrial forest interface, probably because the lack of structural differences between terrestrial forest and mangrove canopies did not permit the establishment of edge-related microclimatic gradients. Due to the isolation of the forest island and the harsh coastal environment, the tree community was dominated by generalist species which are well adapted to the conditions at the grassland–forest edge. Furthermore, the patchy distribution of frequent species and the high number of rare species made it difficult to detect spatial patterns related to the forest edge.

Brazilian mangroves have ecological and economic importance, with molluscs, crustaceans and polychaetes being diverse and common faunal groups. The present study characterizes the macrofauna associated with logs from two mangrove forests in Pará State, northern Brazil, sampled in September, January and April, between 2008 and 2010, at three different distances from a tidal channel (2, 10, 20 m). In each forest, five logs (diameter/length: 10/40 cm) were randomly selected at each distance, totalling 15 logs per sampling date. The macrofauna was removed, counted and identified. Three-way analysis of variance was used to compare mean numbers of individuals, numbers of taxa and Berger–Parker dominance per log, between forests and among sampling dates and distances from the tidal channel. Non-metric multidimensional scaling and permutational multivariate analyses of variance were used to investigate macrofaunal structure in relation to the three factors. A total of 5437 individuals from both estuarine and terrestrial faunas was found in both forests, with 85 taxa distributed among Mollusca, Annelida, Arthropoda and Nemertea. Abundance increased from September through January to April in both mangrove forests. The most dominant species wasNeoteredo reynei, representing 48% of total abundance. No significant difference in any variable was found among the two forests and between the three distances. Logs may represent a stable microhabitat for the macrofauna, with little variation in humidity, salinity or temperature, despite different distances from the tidal channel. However, macrofaunal structure varied significantly between forests and among sampling dates, probably due to seasonal differences in precipitation and salinity between both locations.

In an effort to develop molecular tools for oyster identification, this study reveals the usefulness of a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the reliable, rapid and low-cost identification of the four oyster species found along the Brazilian coast: Crassostrea gasar, Crassostrea rhizophorae, Crassostrea gigas and Crassostrea sp. Canela originally found at Para, Brazil. In order to perform a simultaneous identification of these species, we used a set of five primers developed and adapted from the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) and internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) fragments, respectively. Amplification was successful in all four species and PCR products were visualized in agarose gel. A single reaction was capable of distinguishing between the species: C. gigas, with two fragments (236 bp for COI and 718 bp for ITS1); C. gasar, with one fragment (718 bp for ITS1); Crassostrea sp., with one fragment (621 bp for ITS1) and C. rhizophorae with two fragments (377 bp for COI and 718 bp for ITS1). This molecular approach provides a simple and rapid identification of the oyster species from the Brazilian coast, thus increasing the efficient and quality of oyster culture programs by reducing the risk of wrong species identification.

However, little is known about the effects of freshwater discharge on the subtidal benthos in the region. Thus, three sites, each representing a different level of seasonal discharge, Canela island (low), Ajuruteua beach (medium), and the Caete Bay (high) were sampled in the dry (October) and wet (April/May) seasons of 2007 and 2008, respectively. Sampling was carried out using a Petersen grab and a bottom dredge (total n=74). Additional replicas (n=12) were obtained by grab for sediment analyses. Salinity and turbidity of the bottom waters, and percentage of silt/clay in the sediment were also measured. Management and culture of mangrove oysters may reduce harvesting pressure on natural populations in northern Brazil. Densities of oyster seed, scars and other epibenthos on plastic sheets and bottles were observed over two years at a mangrove island (Ilha Canela), Bragança, Pará, northern Brazil. The only oyster species found settling on the substrates was a possibly exotic oyster (Crassostrea sp. canela) that is closely related to Indo-Pacific Crassostrea and that also occurs in southern China. Densities of seed and scars of Crassostrea sp. canela on bottles were about half those on sheets. Seed and scars predominated (>95% relative abundance) on both collectors. Although densities of other epibenthos were low and irregular, these were positively correlated with densities of seed on both collectors. Oyster seed and barnacles on sheets were more abundant in the wet season. However, in the dry season, seed predominated on the inside of bottles, a refuge from predation or desiccation or both, whereas oyster scars and barnacles were more abundant on the outside. The target species for oyster culture in Pará is Crassostrea gasar. Oyster growers are concerned about potential impacts of Crassostrea sp. canela, the larvae of which appear to prefer high salinity. Seed is regular and abundant as densities exceed published figures for several other Crassostrea species. Knowledge of the timing and density of settlement of this oyster and associated epibenthos is important in order to minimize interference during seed collection of target species. The timing and location of seed collection is therefore critical. We also suggest experiments with collectors conditioned with adult Crassostrea gasar shell remnants, as well as those where limited establishment of epibenthos, such as barnacles, has been allowed, in order to maximize spat collection of the target species, C. gasar, along the Pará coast.

The glochidia of Diplodon (Diplodon) suavidicus (Lea, 1856), D. (D.) obsolescens F. Baker, 1914, Diplodon (Rhipidodonta) hylaeus (d'Orbigny, 1835), Prisodon obliquus Schumacher, 1817, Paxyodon syrmatophorus (Meuschen, 1781), Triplodon corrugatus (Lamarck, 1819, and Castalia ambigua Lamarck, 1819 were redescribed based on comparisons of external morphology and morphometric measurements of larval shells. The outline of the glochidial valves was classified into three types. The morphological comparison was based on light and scanning electron microscopy. Details of the shell, hooks and external sculpture allowed a redescription of the larvae, transferring D. suavidicus and D. obsolescens to the subgenus Diplodon and, within the Prisodontini, the genus Triplodon Spix, 1827 was separated from Prisodon Schumacher, 1817 and Paxyodon Schumacher, 1817. The composition and abundance of the poorly known benthic macroinfauna associated with northern Brazilian saltmarshes, were described from eight sites (between 0°42′2.5″S, 47°52′44.1″W and 0°50′17.3″S, 46°36′13.3″W) along the Para coast, Brazil. Sampling was carried out in November of 2007. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to test for differences in sediment, vegetation and macroinfaunal variables among sites. No vertical zonation of the macroinfauna was detected. Macroinfaunal structure differed greatly among sites with different sediment and vegetation characteristics. Number of individuals and taxa were low in sites with sandy sediments and short, sparse vegetation and high in those with silty sediments with high organic matter and water contents, and tall, dense vegetation. Increasing number of individuals and taxa were associated with a geographical gradient in pore water salinity, which increases from west to east, coinciding with patterns of rainfall described for the Para coast.

Data on macrofauna density and diversity, and the height and density of Spartina brasiliensis, were obtained from salt marsh beds of a tropical estuary in northern Brazil. Sampling was carried out at four distinct times of the year, during the wet and dry seasons and in the transition periods between these. Sampling was also carried out in salt marshes of three size classes, small, medium and large. Variables were analyzed in relation to time of year and salt marsh size class. Overall, 46 taxa were found, with polychaetes, isopods and the gastropod Neritina virginea dominating the fauna. Macrofauna density and diversity were positively correlated with culm density, indicating a possible role in protection from predation. All the three variables were higher during the transitional periods between the wet and dry seasons and seasonal changes in rainfall, salinity and light availability may influence mortality, food availability and settlement of the macrofauna. There was no effect of salt marsh size on either the macrofauna or the vegetation.Dados sobre a densidade e diversidade da macrofauna em relação à altura e densidade de Spartina brasiliensis foram obtidos em bancos de marismas em um estuário tropical no norte do Brasil. A amostragem foi realizada quatro vezes durante um ano, nas estações chuvosa, seca e nos períodos de transição entre estas. A amostragem foi realizada em marismas de três classes de tamanho: pequeno, médio e grande. As variáveis foram analisadas em relação às estações do ano e das classes de tamanho das marismas. Um total de 46 táxons foram encontrados, com os poliquetos, isopodos e o gastropódo Neritina virginea dominando a fauna, resultados similares a estudos realizados em marismas no sul do Brasil. A densidade e a diversidade da macrofauna foram correlacionadas positivamente com a densidade de colmos da vegetação, indicando um possível papel da vegetação em proteção contra predação. Todas as três variáveis foram maiores durante os períodos transicionais entre as estações chuvosa e seca e mudanças sazonais em precipitação, salinidade e disponibilidade de luz possam influenciar mortalidade, disponibilidade de alimento e assentamento da macrofauna. Não houve um efeito de tamanho da marisma sobre a macrofauna ou a vegetação. O efeito beneficial da vegetação sobre a macrofauna é apoiado por outros estudos de marismas brasileiras.

Shipworms are important decomposers of wood, especially in mangrove forests where productivity is high. However, little emphasis has been given to the activity of shipworms in relation to the export of nutrients from mangroves to adjacent coastal areas. As a first step to obtaining such information, the frequency of colonized mangrove driftwood as well as shipworm density and length were studied by collecting washed up logs during a year at Ajuruteua beach, state of Pará, northern Brazil. A single species, Neoteredo reynei (Bartsch, 1920), was found colonizing driftwood. Although large colonized logs were most common on the beach, shipworm density was higher in small logs, especially during the dry season. In general, however, density was higher during the wet season (January to April) and lowest in July. Overall shipworm mean length was 9.66cm. In large logs, mean length increased between the wet and dry seasons. However, there was no difference in length among log size categories. Mean shipworm length was similar throughout most of the year but tended to be greater in July. Although salinity varied between 10.9 and 40 during the year, no relationship was found between salinity and density or length. The results suggest that shipworm activity in driftwood logs is relatively constant throughout the year. Increased air humidity and rainfall may promote survival during the wet season. Large logs may take longer to colonize and thus have lower densities than small ones which are scarce probably because they are destroyed rapidly by shipworm activity. However, data on the disintegration of logs would be necessary to test this hypothesis. Larger size of shipworms in the dry season may be related to growth after an earlier recruitment period. Shipworms in large logs during the dry season may be better protected from dessication and high temperatures by the insulating properties of the larger volume of wood. Turus são importantes decompositores de madeira, especialmente em manguezais, onde a produtividade é alta. Entretanto, pouca ênfase tem sido dada à atividade de turus em relação à exportação de nutrientes de manguezais para as áreas costeiras adjacentes. Como um passo inicial para obter tais informações, a freqüência de madeira do mangue à deriva colonizada por turus, bem como a densidade e comprimento de turus, foram estudados através da coleta de troncos encalhados durante 12 meses na praia de Ajuruteua, Estado do Pará, norte do Brasil. Uma única espécie, Neoteredo reynei (Bartsch, 1920), foi encontrada colonizando a madeira à deriva. Embora troncos grandes colonizados fossem mais comuns na praia, a densidade de turus foi maior nos troncos menores, especialmente na estação seca. Em geral, a densidade foi maior durante a estação chuvosa (janeiro a abril) e menor em julho. O comprimento médio geral de turus foi de 9,66cm e, em troncos grandes, o comprimento médio aumentou entre as estações chuvosa e seca. Entretanto, não houve nenhuma diferença em comprimento entre as categorias de tamanho dos troncos. O comprimento médio dos turus foi semelhante ao longo do maior parte do ano, mas a tendência foi de comprimentos maiores em julho. Embora a salinidade tenha variado entre 10,9 e 40 durante o ano, nenhuma relação entre salinidade e densidade ou comprimento foi encontrada. Os resultados sugerem que a atividade de turus em madeira à deriva é relativamente constante ao longo do ano. Maior umidade do ar e precipitação podem promover sobrevivência durante a estação chuvosa. Troncos maiores podem levar mais tempo para serem colonizados e portanto podem ter densidades menores do que nos troncos menores. Estes últimos são incomuns talvez porque sejam rapidamente destruídos pela atividade dos turus. Dados sobre a desintegração de troncos, entretanto, seriam necessários para corroborar esta hipótese. O tamanho maior de turus na estação seca possivelmente esteja relacionado ao crescimento após um período anterior de recrutamento. Na estação seca, turus em troncos grandes podem ser melhor protegidos da dessecação e de altas temperaturas pelas propriedades isolantes do maior volume de madeira.

As a result of phenotypic plasticity, the cupped oysters (Crassostrea ) are difficult to identify by means of their morphology. However, molecular DNA markers are a useful means of discriminating among these species. Cupped oysters are one of the most widely cultured marine invertebrates and correct species identification is important in aquaculture. Moreover, the molecular phylogeny of the genus Crassostrea and the subfamily Crassostreinae is still not clear. In order to identify the Brazilian cupped oysters and to clarify the phylogenetic relationships of these species, we sequenced a fragment of mitochondrial DNA (16S rRNA gene) from 120 specimens collected at nine different sites distributed along the Brazilian coast. The results identified two native species of oyster: Crassostrea gasar, from the Amazon

The epibenthic encrusting fauna of 2 creeks of the Caete mangrove estuary, northern Brazil, was studied over a 13 month period using collectors fixed at 2.5 and 3.5 m above the creek bottom and in which upper and lower sides of ceramic and wooden panels were used as settlement substrates. The number of individuals of the most abundant organisms (barnacles, oysters and mussels) settling per panel was determined each month, for each substrate type, panel orientation and height above creek bottom. The barnacle, Fistulobalanus citerosum has a peak settlement period during the wet season whereas both peaks in the numbers of settlers of the oyster Crassostrea rhizophorae were recorded during the dry season and such discrete temporal patterns in settlement have also been observed for barnacles and oysters in other mangroves and estuaries. In contrast to other studies, settlement of the mussel Mytella falcata was generally low during the study period and may be related to over-exploitation of stocks in the region. Overall, settler density was usually greater on the underside of ceramic panels close to the creek bottom, similar to results of other studies of epibenthic settlement in diverse habitats.

Oysters (Ostreidae) manifest a high degree of phenotypic plasticity, whereby morphology is of limited value for species identification and taxonomy. By using molecular data, the aim was to genetically characterize the species of Crassostrea occurring along the Brazilian coast, and phylogenetically relate these to other Crassostrea from different parts of the world. Sequencing of the partial cytochrome oxidase c subunit I gene (COI), revealed a total of three species of Crassostrea at 16 locations along the Brazilian coast. C. gasar was found from Curuçá (Pará state) to Santos (São Paulo state), and C. rhizophorae from Fortim (Ceará state) to Florianópolis (Santa Catarina state), although small individuals of the latter species were also found at Ajuruteua beach (municipality of Bragança, Pará state). An unidentified Crassostrea species was found only on Canela Island, Bragança. Crassostrea gasar and C. rhizophorae grouped with C. virginica, thereby forming a monophyletic Atlantic group, whereas Crassostrea sp. from Canela Island was shown to be more similar to Indo-Pacific oysters, and either arrived in the Atlantic Ocean before the convergence of the Isthmus of Panama or was accidentally brought to Brazil by ship.

This chapter deals with studies of the fauna of the mangrove forest and that of the tidal creeks of the Ajuruteua Peninsula, in Braganca, northern Brazil. The first part is focused on diversity and its spatial distribution and discusses the factors affecting diversity and abundance of the species assemblage. In addition, the impact of the construction of the PA-458 highway on the mangrove polychaete assemblage is evaluated. The construction of the highway clearly affected the diversity and spatial distribution of the local polychaete populations, and constitutes one of the principal anthropogenic impacts recorded in the mangroves of the Brazilian Amazon. Regarding the tidal creeks, settlement of the epibenthic mangrove fauna was compared between different substrates (wood and ceramic panels), substrate orientation (underside and upperside), season (wet and dry) and habitat (tidal channel and mangrove forest). Settlement is basically restricted to the tidal creeks with very little settlement occurring in the mangrove forest itself. Settlement was generally higher on the underside of panels. Long-term monitoring (5 years) showed relatively predictable patterns of settlement in barnacles, oysters, and mussels although there was some interannual seasonal variation. In general, polychaetes dominate the mangrove fauna, whereas filter-feeding crustaceans and bivalves are more abundant in the lower, more frequently flooded, creek habitat. However, the mangrove also has an important terrestrial component and even further diversity may occur in the, as yet, poorly studied epibiont mangrove root assemblage. Finally, greater focus on experimental studies is needed to fully quantify biotic and abiotic interactions of the mangrove fauna.

Os rios são os agentes mais importantes no transporte dos sedimentos para as áreas mais baixas dos continentes e para o mar. Além dos efeitos diretos do clima local, a cobertura vegetal atua no controle da descarga e no suprimento de sedimentos. Sendo assim, o presente trabalho enfoca o padrão de distribuição granulométrica do rio Urumajó (nordeste paraense) em relação ao estado de preservação da mata ciliar. Cinco estações (A-E) foram estabelecidas de forma a registrar um transecto da nascente à foz do rio. Nessas estações, procedeu-se com a caracterização da mata ciliar, bem como do seu grau de preservação. Além disto, elaborou-se um perfil transversal ao canal para cada estação, com coleta de cinco amostras de sedimentos em cada perfil. Estes foram submetidos à análise granulométrica, que resultou na obtenção de valores da média, mediana, seleção, assimetria e curtose. Com os resultados foi possível reconhecer as características sedimentares normais do rio, onde areia média é a principal classe granulométrica transportada. Foram observadas nas estações A e C a clara tendência das amostras serem moderadamente bem selecionadas e aproximadamente simétricas, com dominância absoluta de areia média, o que está diretamente relacionado ao seu bom estado de preservação. Significativas variações granulométricas nas estações B, D e E foram associadas com o processo erosivo das margens do rio, conseqüência da degradação da mata ciliar. Além disso, foi constatada a influência das correntes de maré na sedimentologia da estação E, subsidiando também a delimitação do ambiente estuarino que se encontra associado ao canal fluvial. Rivers are the main ways of sediment transport from inland to the coastal zone and oceans. Despite direct influence of climate, the vegetation coverage plays a central role in liquid and solid fluvial discharge. In this context, the present work aimed to study the fluvial sedimentology of the Urumajó River (Pará, Brazil) in relation to the preservation state of riparian vegetation. Sediment samples were collected at five sites (A to E), including a five-sample transversal profile at each site. The sites were distributed from the source to the estuarine area. The characteristics and preservation state of the riparian vegetation were analyzed at each site as well. The collected sediments were submitted to grain size analysis, where mean grain size, median, asymmetry, selection and kurtosis were obtained. The results made it possible to recognize the regular characteristics (sites A and C), which included median sand as the main sediment class and well-sorted and approximate symmetric grain size distribution, directly related to the well-preserved riparian vegetation at sites A and C. On the other hand, sites B, D and E showed substantial differences in relation to the regular pattern. This fact could be associated to the vegetation degradation at those sites, resulting in margin erosion. Furthermore, at site E, reflexes of tide influence on the sediment characteristics could be observed, subsidizing the estuary delimitation. UFPA - Universidade Federal do Pará

Four Brazilian populations of Anomalocardia brasiliana were tested for mutual genetic homogeneity, using data from 123 sequences of the mtDNA cytochrome oxidase c subunit I gene. A total of 36 haplotypes were identified, those shared being H3 (Canela Island, Prainha and Acupe) and both H5 and H9 (Prainha and Acupe). Haplotype diversity values were high, except for the Camurupim population, whereas nucleotide values were low in all the populations, except for that of Acupe. Only the Prainha population showed a deviation from neutrality and the SSD test did not reject the demographic expansion hypothesis. Fst values showed that the Prainha and Acupe populations represent a single stock, whereas in both the Canela Island and Camurupim stocks, population structures are different and independent. The observed structure at Canela Island may be due to the geographic distance between this population and the remainder. The Camurupim population does not share any haplotype with the remaining populations in northeastern Brazil. The apparent isolation could be due to the rocky barrier located facing the mouth of the Mamanguape River. The results highlight the importance of wide-scale studies to identify and conserve local genetic diversity, especially where migration is restricted.

The current taxonomy of the Teredinidae (shipworms) is wholly based on morphology and up to now no molecular studies of the phylogeny of this group have been published. In the present study the relationships between four genera of the subfamilies Teredininae and Bankiinae were established and the efficiency of the 16S rRNA gene in characterizing four Teredinidae species was tested. Phylogenetic trees support the grouping of Bankia fimbriatula with Nausitora fusticula and of Neoteredo reynei with Psiloteredo healdi, but the genetic distances do not justify the classification of these species into two distinct subfamilies. The results show that B. fimbriatula, N. reynei and P. healdi specimens from the coast of the Brazilian state of Pará have five distinct 16S rRNA haplotypes, with one N. reynei haplotype differing from the other haplotypes in respect to at least seven sequences sites, indicating the existence of two very distinct sympatric lineages.

This paper records for the first time the presence of Corbicula fluminea (Philipi, 1844) in the Brazilian Amazon Basin. This exotic bivalve was found in localities on the Amazonas, Pará and Tocantins rivers. Density and population size structure were measured in some localities. Mean density is between 6.66 and 7.3 individuals m-2. Population size structure and the dates of the first records suggest that the introductions may have occurred between 1997 and 1998. The introductions may have been mediated by ocean-going vessels visiting the ports of Manaus and Belém. The potential impact of the invasion on native freshwater bivalves is discussed along with the need for monitoring and prevention of further introductions of non-indigenous bivalves in Brazil. No passado recente, três espécies de moluscos bivalves exóticos têm invadido as águas continentais da América do Sul. O presente trabalho registra pela primeira vez a presença de Corbicula fluminea (Philipi, 1844) na bacia amazônica brasileira. Este bivalve exótico foi encontrado em localidades nos rios Amazonas, Pará e Tocantins. A densidade e a estrutura em tamanho da população foram medidas em alguns locais. A densidade média é entre 6.66 e 7.3 indivíduos m-2. A estrutura da população e as datas dos primeiros registros sugerem que os moluscos foram introduzidos entre 1997 e 1998. As introduções talvez tenham sido causadas por navios visitando os portos de Manaus e Belém. O impacto potencial da invasão sobre os moluscos bivalves nativos é discutido bem como a necessidade de monitoramento e a prevençãode outras introduções de moluscos não-indígenos no Brasil.
