In this study the levels of As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, Se, Zn and Se:Hg molar ratios, in muscle and liver of the endemic catshark Galeus piperatus from the northern Gulf of California (NGC) and relationships with biological parameters, were determined. Arsenic presented the highest levels for both tissues and Pb the lowest. The Se:Hg molar ratios were >1. Sex was not a determining factor in accumulation of elements. The differences in the levels of the studied elements between tissues might be due to their physiological functions and the availability of the metal(loid)s. The diet was considered as an important contribution pathway of these elements despite the fact that G. piperatus feeding habits are still unknown. This dataset comes from a multi-institution compilation of monitoring information for 13 marine herbivorous fishes belonging to six genera of five families: Acanthuridae, Girellidae, Kyphosidae, Pomacentridae and Scaridae, gathered from 2005 to 2020 in the Gulf of California. The database presents a total of 884 records of biomass and density got from 15,542 visual censuses performed using scuba diving in 34 localities comprising 268 rocky and coral reef sites. The censuses consisted of belt transects (250 m 2 , 100 m 2 , and 60 m 2 ) laid parallel to the coastline, where expert monitors recorded the abundance of all observed adult individuals of the 13 target herbivorous species, and visually estimated the total length (cm) of each fish. In the database, the information for each transect is presented in the form of average fish density (individuals/m 2 ) and biomass (g/m 2 ), the latter was estimated based on the abundance and size per individual and the published weight-length relationship for each species. Also, we present the latitude and longitude of each locality, type of management, localities in the Gulf of California, institutions, the initial and final year of data, total number of years, as well as the mean, standard deviation, sample size, slope (annual rate of change), probability value, standard error and minimum and maximum value calculated for each species within each locality. This dataset represents an historical baseline of the status of the 13 species in the Gulf of California and can be used to conduct analyses of temporal and spatial trends in herbivorous fish assemblages, considering tropicalization of the interest region due to global change. Mining has led to severe environmental pollution in countries with exhaustive mining production and inadequate industrial waste regulation. Microorganisms in contaminated sites, like mine tailings, have adapted to high concentrations of heavy metals, developing the capacity of reducing or removing them from these environments. Therefore, it is essential to thoroughly characterize bacteria present in these sites to find different ways of bioremediation. In this regard, in this study, an enrichment and isolation procedure were performed to isolate bacteria with lower nutritional requirements and high tolerance to Cu(II) and Fe(II) from two Sonoran River basin mining tails. Two Staphylococcus species and a Microbacterium ginsengisoli strain were isolated and identified from the San Felipe de Jesús mining tail. Also, three strains were isolated from the Nacozari de García mining tail: Burkholderia cenocepacia, Sphingomonas sp. and Staphylococcus warneri. Significant microbiological differences were found between the two sites. All these species exhibited tolerance up to 300 mg/L for Cu (II)-Fe (II) solutions, indicating their capacity to grow in these conditions. Moreover, a consortium of isolated bacteria was immobilized in two different biocomposites and the biocomposite with larger pore size achieved greater bacterial immobilization showcasing the potential of these bacteria in biotechnological applications., (© 2024. Topaz (Al 2 F 1·44 (OH) 0·56 SiO 4 )/corundum (Al 2 O 3 ) composites were prepared by a facile and novel reversible process from the sintering of synthetic topaz and AlF 3 powders, with corundum formed in situ into the topaz matrix. The corundum formation reaction occurs in the temperature range 875-975 °C, from 40 min sintering time, obtaining the topaz- Al 2 F 1·44 (OH) 0·56 SiO 4 /corundum- Al 2 O 3 composites. Although sintering temperature and time increment lead to higher corundum formation in the topaz matrix (78.4 wt % Al 2 O 3 at 975 °C for 60 min), longer residence times give place to corundum percentage decrease due to topaz reconversion. The composites' microstructure is characterized by a rectangular bar with stacked pyramidal ends and polycrystals of hexagonal plates for topaz and corundum, respectively. For the topaz/corundum composites, the maximum density was 3.05 g/cm 3 (17 % porosity) for specimens sintered at 925 °C for 20 min. The glow curves of the topaz/ in situ corundum composite sintered at 975 °C and 0 min dwell time show thermoluminescent peaks between 180 and 250 °C, useful for dosimetric applications. The most helpful peak (at 221 °C) in the topaz/corundum composite's glow curves determined by computational deconvolution is sharp and exhibits the highest thermoluminescent response. Dose-response analysis of the composite (sintered at 975 °C for 0 min) with the best thermoluminescent response revealed two ranges of linear behavior, the first from 2 to 200 mGy, with an adjustment of 99.9 % and the second in the range 5-300 Gy (99.8 % fitting). The thermoluminescent response improvement of the topaz/corundum composites is attributed to the corundum formed in situ during sintering. Fading rate studies of the composite with the best sintering treatment revealed a signal decrease of 4 % after 15 days, which remained constant for up to 30 days, and 8 % after 60 days. The kinetic parameters, kinetics order ( b ), activation energy ( E ), and frequency factor ( s ) determined using the glow peak shape method showed second-order kinetics. The topaz/corundum composite with the best TL response (975 °C, 0 min) presents an effective atomic number (Z eff ) of 11.74. Background: Persistent periapical lesions (PPL) are the result of pulpar necrosis induced by bacterial infection resulting in bone degradation and culminating with the loss of dental piece. Pathological changes in the peripapice are associated with the presence of free radicals. The transcription factor Nrf2 is the main regulator of the endogenous antioxidant response against oxidative stress and has been implicated in the regulation of osteoclastogenesis.The aim is to determine the oxidative condition in samples from patients with Persistent Periapical Injuries as a detonating factor of tissue damage., Material and Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out in samples with PPL (cases) and samples by removal of third molars (controls) obtained in the clinic of the specialty in endodontics, University of Guadalajara. Samples were submitted to histological staining with Hematoxylin-Eosin, lipoperoxide analysis, Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), Glutathione-Peroxidase (GPx) and Catalase (CAT) activities were determined by immunoenzymatic assays and NrF2 by Western Blot analysis., Results: Samples from PPL patients histologically showed an increased presence of lymphocytes, plasma cells, and eosinophils, as well as a decrease in extracellular matrix proteins and fibroblast cells. There was a rise in lipid peroxidation, GPx and SOD activities, but an important decline (36%) in Catalase activity was observed (p<0.005); finally, NrF2-protein was diminished at 10.41%. All comparisons were between cases vs controls., Conclusions: The alterations in antioxidants endogenous NrF2-controlled are related to osseous destruction in patients with PPL.

Chlorpyrifos (CPF) is one of the most commonly used organophosphate pesticides. Because CPF was described as a toxic compound without safe levels of exposure for children, certain countries in Latin America and the European Union have banned or restricted its use; however, in Mexico it is used very frequently. The aim of this study was to describe the current situation of CPF in Mexico, as well as its use, commercialization, and presence in soil, water, and aquatic organisms in an agricultural region of Mexico. Structured questionnaires were applied to pesticide retailers to determine the sales pattern of CPF (ethyl and methyl); in addition, monthly censuses were conducted with empty pesticide containers to assess the CPF pattern of use. Furthermore, samples of soil (48 samples), water (51 samples), and fish (31 samples) were collected, which were analyzed chromatographically. Descriptive statistics were performed. The results indicate that CPF was one of the most sold (3.82%) and employed OP (14.74%) during 2021. Only one soil sample was found above the CPF limit of quantification (LOQ); in contrast, all water samples had CPF levels above the LOQ (x̄ = 4614.2 ng/L of CPF). In the case of fish samples, 6.45% demonstrated the presence of methyl-CPF. In conclusion, the information obtained in this study indicates the need for constant monitoring in the area, since the presence of CPF in soil, water, and fish constitutes a threat to the health of wildlife and humans. Acacia bilimekii is a plant with a high content of protein, fibre, and condensed tannins, making it an excellent feed for small ruminants with anthelmintic potential. This study aimed to evaluate the ovicidal activity of a hydroalcoholic extract (Ab-HA) and fractions from A. bilimekii aerial parts on Haemonchus contortus. The ovicidal activity of the Ab-HA extract and its fractions obtained by chromatographic fractionation were evaluated through the egg hatching inhibition (EHI) test. The results showed that the Ab-HA extract had 91% EHI at 20,000 µg/mL with a mean effective concentration (EC 50 ) of 9260 µg/mL. After liquid-liquid fractionation of Ab-HA extract, the aqueous fraction (Ab-Aq) did not show ovicidal activity, whereas the organic fraction (Ab-EtOAc) showed a better EHI than the Ab-HA extract (98.9% at 2500 µg/mL). Then, the chemical fractionation of Ab-EtOAc allowed obtaining six bioactive fractions (AbR12-17) with an EHI greater than 90% at 1500 µg/mL. The best treatment was AbR15 (98.7% EHI at 750 µg/mL). Chemical analysis by HPLC-PDA of AbR15 indicated the presence of p-coumaric acid and the flavone luteolin as major compounds. Additionally, the commercial p-coumaric acid standard was evaluated in the EHI assay and showed an EHI of 97% at 62.5 µg/mL. Meanwhile, the confocal laser scanning microscopy analysis demonstrated a colocalization effect between p-coumaric acid and the H. contortus embryonated eggs. It is well known that using retrograded starches confers many technological advantages, as well as health benefits when consumed in adequate doses; however, these properties are closely related to the type of starch and/or the treatment applied, therefore, it is of interest to add retrograded starch to popular products such as Greek yogurt. The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of adding two types of retrograded corn starch with different amylose content to a non-strained type of Greek-style yogurt. Retrograded starch from starch containing 27 % (RNS) or 70 % (RHS) amylose was added to yogurt at 0, 10, 12.5, or 15 g/100 g before storage at 4 °C for 14 d. The resistant starch (RS) content, pH, syneresis, flow behavior index, and consistency index, were measured every week. A sensory test was carried out in yogurt added with 12.5 g/100 g of retrograded starches to evaluate acceptance. Adding retrograded starch significantly reduced syneresis while increased the consistency, firmness, and resistant starch content of the yogurt. No significant differences in general acceptance were observed in samples added with RNS when compared to the control. Although a significant difference was observed after adding RHS, the acceptance of the product is still convenient. Adding a high concentration of retrograded starch could help to ensure doses enough for a prebiotic effect of RS with concentrations of 1.74 ± 0.37 to 2.32 ± 0.09 g/100 g and from 3.5 ± 0.08 to 4.21 ± 0.08 g/100 g when RNS or RHS is added respectively, while maintaining the quality characteristics of Greek-style yogurt during storage without compromising the acceptability., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest We state that there is no actual or potential conflict of interest related to the document titled “Effect of adding high concentrations of retrograded starch with different amylose content on the physicochemical properties and sensory attributes of Greek-style yogurt”. Objective: Evidence supports the local application of non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs such as dexketoprofen trometamol (DXT) for pain management, but little is known about the potential antinociceptive effect of chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX) and its possible synergistic effect when combined with DXT. The aim of this study was to evaluate the local effect of a DXT-CHX combination using isobolographic analysis in a formalin pain model in rats., Materials and Methods: Briefly, 60 female Wistar rats were used for the formalin test. Individual dose effect curves were obtained using linear regression. For each drug, the percentage of antinociception and median effective dose (ED50; 50% of antinociception) were calculated, and drug combinations were prepared using the ED50s for DXT (phase 2) and CHX (phase 1). The ED50 of the DXT-CHX combination was determined, and an isobolographic analysis was performed for both phases., Results: The ED50 of local DXT was 5.3867 mg/mL in phase 2 and for CHX was 3.9233 mg/mL in phase 1. When the combination was evaluated, phase 1 showed an interaction index (II) of less than 1, indicating synergism but without statistical significance. For phase 2, the II was 0.3112, with a reduction of 68.88% in the amounts of both drugs to obtain the ED50; this interaction was statistically significant (P < .05)., Conclusion: DXT and CHX had a local antinociceptive effect and exhibited synergistic behavior when combined in phase 2 of the formalin model.

Biological and fishery features of Panopea sp. clams have been studied in northwest Mexico because of their importance for human consumption. However, the content of pollutants in their tissues, along with their implications have not been addressed yet. The concentrations of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), and zinc (Zn) in soft tissues of Panopea generosa and P. globosa clams were examined in this region by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The metal concentrations (µg/g wet weight) ranged from 6.5 to 14.2, 0.97-8.09, 0.60-1.18, and 0.01-0.07, for Zn, Cu, Cd, and Hg, respectively. This study proposes that metal presence is related to weathering, upwelling, and drainage from adjacent agricultural lands to the coast. Objective: This study aimed to compare the survival experience of adult inpatients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 during the first three waves (wild type, Delta, and Omicron) of the pandemic in Mexico., Study Design: A retrospective and nationwide study was conducted., Methods: Data from 229,311 participants were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method, and estimates per each pandemic wave were obtained. A multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression model was fitted, and hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were computed., Results: The overall mortality rate was 49.1 per 1000 person-days. Heterogeneous survival rates were observed during the analyzed emergences (log-rank test, P < 0.001), and the lowest survival functions were computed during the Omicron variant dominance. In multiple analyses and after adjusting by host characteristics and COVID-19 vaccination status, cases occurring during the Delta (vs wild type: HR = 1.03, 95% CI 1.01-1.05) and Omicron emergence were at increased risk for a fatal in-hospital outcome (HR = 1.17, 95% CI 1.13-1.22)., Conclusions: Our results suggest variant-related differences in the survival rates of hospitalized patients with laboratory-positive COVID-19. This study evaluated the effect of three feeding levels on the pathogenesis and establishment of H. contortus upon the first infection of parasite-naïve Pelibuey hair sheep lambs. Forty-two 6-month-old hair sheep lambs (24 ± 4 kg) raised parasite free from birth were used. The lambs were assigned to 3 groups (n = 14), and each was fed a diet designed for different daily weight gain (DWG): 75 g/d (Diet 1), 125 g/d (Diet 2) and 200 g/d (Diet 3). After four weeks of diet adaptation, 10 lambs/group were infected with 450 L 3 H. contortus/kg BW (infected), and 4 lambs/group were kept parasite-free (NInf). DWG, hematocrit (Ht), hemoglobin (Hb), peripheral eosinophils (EOS), IgG concentration against H. contortus, and eggs per gram (EPG) of feces were measured in each lamb from day 14 before infection until day 29 postinfection (PI). On day 29 PI, the lambs were slaughtered to determine the total number of adult parasites (TAW), the length of the female worms, and the number of eggs in utero (EIU). Each group reached the expected DWG (P = 0.001), and there was no effect of infection or the diet × infection interaction. Ht was lower in infected lambs than in NInf lambs, and this difference was significant for animals on Diets 1 and 2 (P = 0.044). From day 14 PI onward, Hb was lower in the infected lambs than in the NInf lambs (P = 0.001). Furthermore, compared with NInf lambs, the infected lambs had higher EOS from day 7 PI and higher IgG from day 14 PI. Neither EOS nor IgG were affected by diet. Lambs on Diet 3 had lower EPG during patency than those fed Diets 1 or 2 (days 25 and 28 PI; P = 0.002). Furthermore, lambs fed Diet 3 had lower TAW (Diet 1 vs 3 P = 0.037; Diet 2 vs 3 P = 0.049) and EIU (P = 0.004) than lambs fed Diet 1 or 2. Lambs were resilient to infection regardless of diet. Although EOS and IgG were higher in all infected animals than in Ninf animals, EPG, TAW and EIU decreased only in lambs fed Diet 3. The purpose of the present study was to assay the in vitro and in vivo anthelmintic activity (AA) of Caesalpinia coriaria (Cc) mature fruits against the nematode Haemonchus contortus (Hc). The Hc infective larvae were used to assess the in vitro AA through larval mortality assay. The exposure of larvae to the different treatments was performed in 96-well microtitration plates. The treatments were as follows: hydroalcoholic extract (HA-E, at 25-100 mg/mL), aqueous fraction (Aq-F, at 12.5-50 mg/mL), organic fraction (EtOAc-F at 12.5-50 mg/mL), compounds (1, methyl gallate and 2, gallic acid at 1.25-10 mg/mL), positive control (ivermectin at 5 mg/mL) and two negative controls (distilled water and 4% methanol). After exposure, dead and live larvae were quantified and results were compared to their controls. The in vivo assay was carried out by a faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT); artificially infected goat kids (F1: Boer x Nubia) were treated with Cc ground dried fruits to assess the AA. The treatments were established as follows: G1-untreated goats (negative control), G2-goats dewormed with ivermectin (positive control), G3-goats fed with Cc mature fruits (10% of their diet). Results in both in vitro and in vivo assays were analysed using an ANOVA through random design, applying a general linear model and mixed models. The in vitro results showed an evident larvicidal effect of the HA-E, EtOAc-F from Cc, indicating that the compound responsible for the AA was gallic acid. The results of the in vivo study corroborated the anthelmintic properties of Cc, reaching 78.6% reduction in the elimination of Hc eggs per gram of faeces. This plant represents a potential natural anthelmintic for the control of haemonchosis in goats under grazing conditions. The riffle bugs of the Rhagovelia angustipes complex have presented problems in taxonomy due to high intra-specific variability. Here we identified variation in the complex with morphometric techniques. We analyzed variation of the characters and performed a phylogenetic analysis of a combined matrix of linear measurements, geometric configurations, and discrete characters. We found that characters such as head length, metanotum length, femur width, and the evaluated shape of four characters (head, abdomen, fore tibia, hind femur) were important for the delimitation of species. In particular, we identified the metanotum length as a character that had not been previously considered in the taxonomy of the complex. The phylogenetic reconstruction allowed us to recover some relationships established for the taxonomy of the complex for the salina group, except for the species R. colombiana that was closer to R. calceola and R. calopa. This may be due to a similar natural history, since they share areas of distribution, while the R. bisignata and R. hambletoni groups could not be recovered, showing their low morphological support. In general, the geometric morphometric characters showed high levels of homology, with the head and the anterior tibia being the ones that had the best performance in the tree. Objectives: To compare, in a real-world scenario, the protective effect of vaccination and previous laboratory-confirmed symptomatic infection on the risk of COVID-19 pneumonia., Methods: A retrospective study was conducted and 46,998 adults with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 were enrolled. Risk ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to evaluate the effect of the evaluated exposures on the risk of pneumonia., Results: In multiple analysis and after adjusting by reinfection status, vaccinated participants were at reduced risk of developing pneumonia (RR = 0.974, 95% CI 0.965-0.983). The association of having had a previous infection was not significant (RR = 1.001, 95% CI 0.969-1.034)., Conclusion: Our results suggest, and if later replicated, that COVID-19 vaccines provide better protection against pneumonia than previous symptomatic infections. We present the first study that compares phenological variation in parasite load and inflammatory response in a lizard with asynchronous male and female gonadal cycles. Other studies have used many species with seasonal and synchronous reproductive cycles, in which it is difficult to decouple the effects of internal and external factors that can affect parasite abundance in each sex. Species with asynchronous reproductive cycles provide the opportunity to study the effects of seasonality and reproductive condition separately, but few studies have documented variation in parasite abundance in these species. We made an extensive comparison of parasite load and inflammatory response of the lizard Sceloporus torquatus, a species with asynchronous reproductive cycles, throughout its active period. We hypothesized that the parasite load would be higher in the period of maximum gonadal activity for each sex, negatively related to body condition and inflammatory response. Our results partially support the hypothesis; males had more parasites in summer than in spring and autumn, while females had more parasites in spring and summer than in autumn; however, we do not find a relationship between parasite load, body condition and inflammatory response. Our results indicated that host-parasite interactions are complex and depend upon both environmental and internal factors. Therefore, longer-term studies may provide a more comprehensive picture of host-parasite dynamics in populations of wild lizards., (© 2022. Background: The empirical prescription of antibiotics to inpatients with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is frequent despite uncommon bacterial coinfections. Current knowledge of the effect of antibiotics on the survival of hospitalized children with COVID-19 is limited., Objective: To characterize the survival experience of children with laboratory-positive COVID-19 in whom antibiotics were prescribed at hospital admission., Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in Mexico, with children hospitalized due to COVID-19 from March 2020 to December 2021. Data from 1601 patients were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method and the log-rank test. We computed hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) to evaluate the effect of the analyzed exposures on disease outcomes., Results: Antibiotics were prescribed to 13.2% ([Formula: see text] = 211) of enrolled children and a higher mortality rate [14.9 (95% CI 10.1-19.8) vs. 8.3 (95% CI 6.8-9.8)] per 1000 person-days, [Formula: see text] < 0.001) was found among them. At any given cut-off, survival functions were lower in antibiotic-positive inpatients ([Formula: see text] < 0.001). In the multiple model, antibiotic prescription was associated with a 50% increase in the risk of fatal outcome (HR = 1.50, 95% CI 1.01-2.22). Ochratoxin A (OTA) and fumonisin B 1 (FB 1 ) are mycotoxins distributed in a wide variety of foods for human or animal consumption and are classified as possible carcinogens for humans. This study aimed to evaluate the cytotoxic, cytostatic and genotoxic effects of OTA and its main metabolite, ochratoxin α (OTα), FB 1 and three combinations of OTA and FB 1 at moderate and environmental doses. Cell viability was evaluated through MTT assay and the trypan blue exclusion method. The cytostatic and genotoxic effects were evaluated through the cytokinesis-block micronucleus assay. The results showed synergistic time- and concentration-dependent cytotoxic effects of one of the combinations of OTA and FB 1 . In contrast, significant differences were observed in the micronuclei (MN) frequency from OTA, OTα and coexposure of OTA + FB 1 . Some of these combinations increased the frequency of nuclear buds, nucleoplasmic bridges, donut-shaped nuclei, necrotic and apoptotic cells and MN in mononucleated cells. In conclusion, OTA and its main metabolite OTα, as well as the co-exposure of OTA and FB 1 , cause stable DNA damage at environmentally relevant concentrations, which was greater in metabolically competent cells. Objectives: To evaluate host factors associated with the risk of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia in vaccinated adults., Methods: A cohort study was conducted in Mexico, and data from 1607 adults with confirmed illness, with a positive history of COVID-19 vaccination, were analyzed. Risk ratios (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were computed as a measure of the significance of the associations between putative risk factors and the prevalence of COVID-19 pneumonia in vaccinated subjects., Results: The overall risk of pneumonia was 1.98 per 1000 person-days. In the multiple regression analysis, older subjects, those with a history of smoking (current), obesity, and type 2 diabetes mellitus were at increased risk of pneumonia., Conclusions: Our results suggest that the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines may be reduced in a subset of adults who are older aged, smokers, obese, or have type 2 diabetes mellitus., (Copyright © 2022 The Author(s). It is acknowledged that antiviral immune response contributes to dengue immunopathogenesis. To identify immunological markers that distinguish dengue fever (DF) and dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), 113 patients with confirmed dengue infection were analyzed at 6 or 7 days after fever onset. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were isolated, lymphocyte subsets and activation biomarkers were identified by flow cytometry, and differentiation of T helper (Th) lymphocytes was achieved by the relative expression analysis of T-bet (Th1), GATA-3 (Th2), ROR-γ (Th17), and FOXP-3 (T regulatory) transcription factors quantified by real-time PCR. CD8 + , CD40L + , and CD45 + cells show higher numbers in DF compared to DHF patients, whereas CD4 + , CD19 + , and CD25 + cells show higher numbers in DHF than DF patients. High expression of GATA-3 accompanied by low expression of T-bet indicates predominance of Th2 response. In addition, higher expression of FOXP-3 and reduced functional cytotoxic T cells (CD8 + perforin + ) were observed in DHF patients. In further experiments, PBMC were stimulated ex vivo with dengue virus E, NS3, NS4, and NS5 peptides, and proliferating T cell subsets were determined. Lower proliferative responses to NS3 and NS4 peptides and reduced CD8 + cytotoxic T cells were observed in DHF patients. Even when an animal has a generalist diet, different food sources can impact its body shape and fluctuating asymmetry (a stress indicator; FA). To test this, we varied the food source (mammalian, avian or defibrinated mammalian blood; and control animals - ad libitum feeding) and the time of feeding (every 8 days, 45 days and ad libitum) having the Chagas triatomine vector, Triatoma pallidipennis (Stål, 1892), as a study animal which has presumable generalist feeding habits. This factorial design was applied since first instar animals until adulthood. As response variables, we measured body shape and FA in adults of both sexes, using a two-dimensional geometric morphometrics protocol. The highest variance in body shape was explained by diet (17%), followed by sex nested within diet (12%). Males had less morphological differentiation than females: females with defibrinated blood provided every 45 days differentiated more, while those that fed on mammalian blood every 8 days differed less. Distances among the averages of the FA component related to shape indicated greater distances between avian blood provided every 45 days and mammalian blood provided every 8 days, as well as between the two groups fed on avian blood (feeding every 8 and 45 days), followed by avian and defibrinated blood, both fed every 8 days. These results indicate that blood source and feeding time have significant effects on the body shape, and FA in females and both sexes. Thus, despite general feeding habits, avian blood showed a greater impact on shape and FA in triatomines. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate factors associated with the risk of COVID-19 pneumonia in children (aged <10 years) and adolescents (aged 10-19 years) before (March 2020-April 2021) and during (May-July 2021) the Delta (B.1.617.2) variant emergence., Study Design: A retrospective and nationwide cohort study was conducted in Mexico., Methods: Data from 26,961 laboratory-confirmed cases of COVID-19 were analyzed. Risk ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to evaluate the association of the evaluated exposures with the risk of COVID-19 pneumonia., Results: The overall incidence rate of pneumonia was 23.0 per 10,000 person-days, and it was lower during the Delta variant emergence (30.3 vs. 9.4 person-days, p < 0.001). In multiple analysis, a decreased risk of pneumonia was observed among those cases occurring in May 2021 or later (vs. March 2020-April 2021, RR = 0.98, 95% CI 0.97-0.99) and among older patients (RR per year  = 0.998, 95% CI 0.996-0.998). Other comorbidities (namely, obesity, chronic kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, immunosuppression, or malignant tumors) were associated with an increased risk of severe COVID-19 manifestations., Conclusions: Our findings suggest that during the Delta variant emergence, children and adolescent patients were at reduced risk of COVID-19 pneumonia in Mexico. Background: By end December of 2021, COVID-19 has infected around 276 million individuals and caused over 5 million deaths worldwide. Infection results in dysregulated systemic inflammation, multi-organ dysfunction, and critical illness. Cells of the central nervous system are also affected, triggering an uncontrolled neuroinflammatory response. Low doses of glucocorticoids, administered orally or intravenously, reduce mortality among moderate and severe COVID-19 patients. However, low doses administered by these routes do not reach therapeutic levels in the CNS. In contrast, intranasally administered dexamethasone can result in therapeutic doses in the CNS even at low doses., Methods: This is an approved open-label, multicenter, randomized controlled trial to compare the effectiveness of intranasal versus intravenous dexamethasone administered in low doses to moderate and severe COVID-19 adult patients. The protocol is conducted in five health institutions in Mexico City. A total of 120 patients will be randomized into two groups (intravenous vs. intranasal) at a 1:1 ratio. Both groups will be treated with the corresponding dexamethasone scheme for 10 days. The primary outcome of the study will be clinical improvement, defined as a statistically significant reduction in the NEWS-2 score of patients with intranasal versus intravenous dexamethasone administration. The objective of this study was to evaluate an n-hexane extract of Artemisia cina (Acn-h) as a natural anthelmintic treatment for periparturient goats naturally infected with the nematodes Haemonchus contortus and Teladorsagia circumcincta. A total of 200 periparturient Alpine and Nubian goats were used. Deworming criteria were based on the following parameters: fecal egg account (epg), ocular mucosa color (OMC), and body condition (BC). A previous analysis using coprocultures of the flock revealed the presence of H. contortus (80%) and T. circumcincta (20%). The Acn-h contained two new compounds identified by mass spectrometry data as isoguaiacin and norisoguaiacin at 284.14 and 315 m/z. The lethal effects of Acn-h at 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 mg/mL on H. contortus adult stages were 31.6, 66.5, 81.3, and 86.9%, respectively (p < 0.05), showing similar efficacy at 2 and 4 mg/mL with albendazole (positive control group). Then, two experimental groups, with 100 goats in peripartum in each, were distributed randomly and treated at day 0 as follows: group 1 = 4 mg/kg of Acn-h as single oral dose, and group 2 = control group, treated with water (as a placebo). The epg, OMC, and BC parameters were recorded at 0 (periparturient period), 7 (birth period), and 23 (postpartum) days and analyzed using a completely randomized design with Duncan's test for comparison of means and analysis of variance. The following epg reductions were recorded in the Acn-h-treated group as follows: 20.1 ± 34.4 and 31.7 ± 38.2% at days 7 and 23 compared to the control group. During the whole experiment, no significant differences in OMC or BC were observed in relation to the control group, excepting at day 23 (p < 0.05) for BC in the group treated with A. cina. Thus, Acn-h can be a useful natural alternative tool for the control of the nematodes H. contortus and T. circumcincta in periparturient goat flocks., (© 2022. A histological analysis was performed with the aim of elucidating the spontaneous regeneration process of the hairy root lines LRT 2.3 and LRT 6.4, derived from Lopezia racemosa leaf explants and genetically transformed with the Agrobacterium &nbsp; rhizogenes strain ATCC15834/pTDT. The analysis showed both lines regenerate via indirect somatic embryogenesis; LRT 6.4 also regenerated by direct organogenesis. The morphogenic characteristics of the regenerated plantlets from both lines showed the typical characteristics, described previously, including a higher number of axillary shoot formation, short internodes, and plagiotropic roots compared with wild-type seedlings. The regeneration process occurred without the addition of plant growth regulators and was linked to the sucrose concentration in the culture medium. Reducing the sucrose concentration from 3% to 2%, 1%, and 0.5% increased the regeneration rate in LRT 6.4; the effect was less pronounced in LRT 2.3. The cytotoxic activity of different organic extracts obtained from roots and shoots were evaluated in the cancer cell lines HeLa (cervical carcinoma), HCT-15 (colon adenocarcinoma), and OVCAR (ovary carcinoma). The hexane and dichloromethane extracts from roots of both lines showed cytotoxic activity against the HeLa cell line. Only the dichloromethane extract from the roots of PLRT 2.3 showed cytotoxic activity against the OVCAR cell line. None of the methanol extracts showed cytotoxic activity, nor the shoot extracts from any solvent.

Background: Influenza remains a common cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and viral subtype-related differences in disease outcomes have been documented., Objective: To characterize the survival experience of adult inpatients with influenza virus-associated pneumonia by viral subtype during five consecutive flu seasons., Method: We performed a retrospective cohort study; data from 4,678 adults were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method. A multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression model was fitted., Results: The overall in-hospital mortality rate was 25.0 per 1,000 hospital days. The survival probabilities from pneumonia patients went from 93.4% (95% CI 92.6-94.1%) by day three to 43.3% (95% CI 39.2-47.4%) by day 30 from hospital admission. In general, the lowest survival rates were observed in patients with AH1N1 infection. In multiple models, after adjusting for comorbidities and when compared with A non-subtyped virus, pneumonia patients with AH3N2 or B strains had a significantly decreased risk of a non-favorable disease outcome. The association of other strains was not significant., Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the survival of inpatients with influenza virus-associated pneumonia varies according to the pathogenic viral subtype; the lowest survival rates were observed in patients with AH1N1 infection. A theoretical study of the Mn trimer adsorbed on the noble metal surfaces Au(111) and Cu(111) is reported. The calculations were performed using first-principles methods within the density functional theory and the generalized gradient approximation in the collinear and non-collinear magnetic phases. The system was modeled by considering a surface unit cell of 25 atoms to improve the trimer's isolation on the surface. We evaluated the trimer as a linear chain and forming triangular structures. The triangular trimer can be adsorbed in two possible configurations, above an empty surface triangle site (Δ) or on a triangle with a surface atom at the center in a hexagonal structure (H). The difference is the coordination of the Mn with surface atoms. We studied the antiferromagnetic (AF), ferromagnetic (FM), and non-collinear (NC) magnetic cases. As a result, the lowest energy configuration on both metals is the AF Δ configuration, which has an isosceles triangle shape. In comparison, the NC and the FM configurations adopt an equilateral geometry. The same trend was observed for the H configurations, but they are less bonded. The results are supported by calculating the spin-polarized electronic structure and the electronic charge transfer. Background: Knowledge regarding factors predicting the SARS-COV-2 reinfection risk is scarce and it has major implications in public health policies. We aimed to identify factors associated with the risk of symptomatic SARS-COV-2 reinfection., Methods: We conducted a nationwide retrospective cohort study and 99,993 confirmed cases of COVID-19 were analyzed., Results: The overall risk of reinfection (28 or more elapsed days between both episodes onset) was 0.21% (incidence density, 2.5 reinfections per 100,000 person-days) and older subjects and those with the mild primary disease were at reduced risk of the event. Distribution of arsenic (As) in tissues and gonads of the Indo-Pacific sailfish Istiophorus platypterus and the dolphinfish Coryphaena hippurus from the SE Gulf of California was evaluated. The bioaccumulation patterns of As were the same in the two species. In I. platypterus, As levels (mg kg -1 , wet weight) were gonads (7.4 ± 1.1) > liver (3.1 ± 0.1) > kidney (2.7 ± 0.1) > muscle (1.6 ± 0.1); in C. hippurus, As (mg kg -1 ) levels were gonads (4.3 ± 0.6) > liver (3.2 ± 0.2) > kidney (2.3 ± 0.1) > muscle (1.2 ± 0.1). Differences in As distribution could be attributed to the biological functions of tissues. The hypothesis was confirmed that biomagnification was evidenced by the fact that As levels were lower in prey species than in predators. Intake of muscle from either fish did not represent a risk to humans if recommended portions a week are not exceeded, adults as much as 1802.4 g and 2454.1 g and children 257.5 and 350.6 g, for sailfish and dolphinfish, respectively. In addition, the likelihood of developing cancer due to consumption of edible tissues from either of these top predators was in the acceptable range (6.4 × 10 -5 to 27.3 × 10 -6 for a population that consumes 50 g of muscle in a week) but if a conservative combined slope factor is used the probabilities to develop bladder and lung cancer increments from 1.1 × 10 -3 to 9.1 × 10 -5 ., (© 2021. Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the survival experience of suspicion COVID-19 hospitalized patients with pneumonia and negative baseline reverse-transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) test results., Study Design: We conducted a nationwide retrospective cohort study in Mexico., Methods: Adult pneumonia inpatients fulfilling suspected COVID-19 criteria, and hospital entry from March to August 2020, were enrolled. The Kaplan-Meier method was to use to compare survival estimates among patients with negative RT-qPCR nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal swabs and those with a baseline positive test., Results: Data from 64,624 individuals fulfilling suspected COVID-19 criteria were analyzed and 1.6% of them had negative RT-qPCR tests. The overall mortality rate was higher among laboratory-positive patients (48.5% vs. 34.2%, P < 0.001) and, at any given threshold, the survival estimates were higher among RT-qPCR-negative pneumonia inpatients., Conclusions: The pathogenic mechanism of COVID-19 remains poorly understood and suspected cases with pneumonia and negative laboratory results represent a major challenge for healthcare systems. Our findings suggest that RT-qPCR-negative inpatients may have an improved disease prognosis, but the in-hospital mortality was still high among them. The bioaccumulation of arsenic (As) in the muscle, liver, kidneys, and brain of the shark Sphyrna lewini was measured in 40 juvenile specimens from southeast Gulf of California. Additionally, the biomagnification factor was calculated through prey items from stomach contents of the analyzed specimens. The concentrations of As (mg kg -1 , wet weight) were higher in the muscle (10.1 ± 0.3) and liver (9.4 ± 0.5) than in the brain (4.5 ± 0.3) and kidneys (4.2 ± 0.2), which may be attributed to the biological functions of each tissue. Positive correlations were found between the levels of As in muscle and liver with the biological parameters of S. lewini. Hammerhead sharks feed mainly of teleost fishes with low As values (Clupeidae fishes, 1.1 ± 0.5; Sciaenidae fishes, 1.0 ± 0.6; Scomber japonicus, 1.2 ± 0.6; and Etropus crossotus 2.1 ± 0.4) compared with the predator, indicating biomagnification. Inorganic arsenic (As i ) in muscle was estimated as 3% of the total As, although muscle consumption is unlikely to represent a risk (HQ < 1) in humans. Moreover, the probabilities of developing cancer were estimated as low (3.99 × 10 -5 to 3.32 × 10 -6 ). To avoid health risks related to As, a weekly ration must not exceed 69.3 and 484.8 g in children and adults, respectively.

Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate factors predicting severe symptomatic laboratory-confirmed (via Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, RT-PCR polymerase chain reaction) severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) reinfection., Study Design: This is a nationwide retrospective cohort study that was conducted in Mexico., Methods: Data from 258 reinfection cases (at least 28 days between both episodes onset) were analyzed. We used risk ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to evaluate predictors of severe (dyspnea requiring hospital admission) secondary SARS-CoV-2 infection., Results: The risk of severe disease was 14.7%, and the observed overall fatality rate was 4.3%. Patients with more serious primary disease were more likely to develop severe symptoms (39.5% vs. 5.5%, P < 0.001) during reinfection. In multiple analysis, factors associated with an increased risk of severe symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 reinfection were increasing age (RR per year  = 1.007, 95% CI = 1.003-1.010), comorbidities (namely, obesity [RR = 1.12, 95% CI = 1.01-1.24], asthma [RR = 1.26, 95% CI = 1.06-1.50], type 2 diabetes mellitus [RR = 1.22, 95% CI = 1.07-1.38]), and previous severe laboratory-confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (RR = 1.20, 95% CI = 1.03-1.39)., Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study evaluating disease outcomes in a large set of laboratory-positive cases of symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 reinfection, and factors associated with illness severity were characterized. The purpose of this work was to use the deep-water chimaera Hydrolagus colliei to examine the bioaccumulation and availability of Hg and Se in its deep-water habitat; the Se:Hg molar ratio was calculated to establish baseline information of the species and its associated ecosystem. The organisms were collected from northern Gulf of California. Hg levels in muscle were higher than liver and the opposite pattern happened with Se concentrations. Female had total lengths and weights higher than male but there were not found differences between elements concentrations by sex. Hg in muscle was correlated with weight. Molar Se:Hg ratio in muscle was the lowest compared to the liver. It was hypothesized that Hg and Se uptake to H. colliei were by its feeding habits because is a dominant species component of the demersal ecosystem and that play and important functional role in the control of oceanic ecosystem structure and function., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Background: The mortality of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is high, and data regarding its prognosis are scarce. We aimed to assess the survival experience and determining factors in adult inpatients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19., Methods: We conducted a nationwide and retrospective cohort study. Data from 66,123 individuals were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method, and a multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression model was fitted., Results: The 7-day survival was 72.2% and went to 47.6%, 35.0%, and 23.9% on days 15, 21, and 30 of hospital stay, respectively. In the multiple analysis, factors associated with an increased risk of dying were male gender, age, pneumonia at hospital admission, immunosuppression, and personal history of chronic non-communicable diseases. Reduced risk of a fatal outcome was observed among patients with asthma history., Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest study analyzing the survival probability in a large subset of Latin-American adults with COVID-19, in whom the disease burden has been high. Consider the generic family of 3D Filippov linear systems that possess a double-tangency singularity of Teixeira type. We are interested in finding mechanisms for the emergence of an attractor from such a singularity, like a crossing limit cycle, an invariant torus, or a strange attractor. For this, we unfold the pseudo-Hopf bifurcation for this class of systems in order to guarantee the existence of a crossing limit cycle and, subsequently, from this attractor, obtain a more intricate one. Two illustrative examples are given in order to show evidence of attractors obtained by means of the proposed strategy. Both theoretical and numerical results are provided for verification and demonstration.

Jacquinia macrocarpa , a plant native to northwestern Mexico, has an inhibitory effect against phytopathogenic fungi. Previous studies have shown that the butanolic extract of J. macrocarpa causes retardation and atrophy in mycelial growth of Fusarium verticillioides . However, the action mechanism of this extract is unknown. We used a proteomics approach to understand the inhibitory effect of J. macrocarpa butanolic extract, based on differential protein accumulation in F. verticillioides . Proteins were extracted from F. verticillioides cultured in Czapek broth with and without 202.12 μg/mL (IC 50 ) of butanolic extract of J. macrocarpa . Thirty-eight protein spots showing statistically significant changes (ANOVA, p < 0.01) and at least a 2-fold change in abundance between experimental conditions were analyzed by mass spectrometry. Identified proteins were grouped into different biological processes according to Gene Ontology, among them were amino acid metabolism, protein folding and stabilization, protein degradation, protein transport, carbohydrate metabolism, oxidative stress response, and miscellaneous. This work is the first report of changes in the proteomic profile of F. verticillioides exposed to the J. macrocarpa extract. This information provides new insights into the inhibitory mechanism of the extract and represents a starting point for dissection of the fungal response against the J. macrocarpa extract components.

The uptake of arsenite [As(iii)] and arsenate [As(v)] by functionalized calcium alginate (Ca-Alg) beads from aqueous solutions was investigated. Ca-Alg beads were protonated with poly-l-lysine (PLL) or polyethyleneimine (PEI) using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide/ N -hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS) or glutaraldehyde (GA) as crosslinking agents. Four types of protonated beads were prepared: Ca-Alg-EDC/NHS (PLL or PEI) and Ca-Alg-GA (PLL or PEI). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in total attenuated reflection mode (FTIR-ATR), analysis showed presence and increased intensity of bands corresponding to OH, NH, CH 2 and CH 3 groups in modifications with both polycations. In addition, thermogravimetric analysis and atomic force microscopy of all modified capsules showed an increase in thermal stability and uniformity of the capsules, respectively. Ca-Alg-EDC/NHS-PLL beads had the maximum adsorption capacity of [As(v)] (312.9 ± 4.7 μg g -1 of the alginate) at pH 7.0 and 15 minute exposure, while Ca-Alg-EDC/NHS-PEI beads had the maximum adsorption capacity of [As(iii)] (1052.1 ± 4.6 μg g -1 of alginate). However, all these EDC containing beads were degraded in the presence of citrate. Ca-Alg-GA-PEI beads removed 252.8 ± 9.7 μg of [As(v)] μg g -1 of alginate and 524.7 ± 5.3 de [As(iii)] μg g -1 of alginate, resulting the most stable capsules and suitable for As removal., Competing Interests: There are no conflict of interest to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

The present paper reviewed publications on the nematocidal activity of edible mushrooms (EM) and their potential use as sustainable tools for the control of parasitic nematodes affecting agriculture and livestock industry. Nematodes are organisms living in the soil and animals' guts where they may live as parasites severely affecting economically important crops and farm animals, thus causing economic losses to worldwide agriculture. Traditionally, parasitic nematodes have been controlled using commercial pesticides and anthelmintic (AH) drugs. Over the years, nematodes developed resistance to the AH drugs, reducing the usefulness of many commercial drugs. Also, the use of pesticides/anthelmintic drugs to control nematodes can have important negative impacts on the environment. Different EM have been not only used as food but also studied as alternative methods for controlling several diseases including parasitic nematodes. The present paper reviewed publications from the last decades about the nematocidal activity of EM and assessed their potential use as sustainable tools for the control of nematodes affecting agriculture and livestock industry. A reduced number of reports on the effect of EM against nematodes were found, and an even smaller number of reports regarding the potential AH activity of chemical compounds isolated from EM products were found. However, those studies have produced promising results that certainly deserve further investigation. In the last decade, consumer perception of protein as an important nutrient has increased exponentially and focused on alternative sources such as plant- or insect-based protein and microalgae. However, many consumers indicate that they do not consider insect ingredients, a potential source of high quality protein, to be a good choice in food products. But is it because of the sensory aspects? This consumer study was conducted in the United States of America, Mexico, and Spain to compare acceptability of a familiar product, chocolate chip cookies, in three "blind" variations: a control 100% wheat flour chocolate chip cookie, and two versions substituting 15% and 30% cricket flour for an equivalent amount of wheat flour. Two hundred consumers from each country were recruited and scored overall acceptability and acceptability of different sensory attributes for the three cookies. Acceptance was measured using a nine-point hedonic scale and a similar format was used for each attribute. US consumers did not find significant differences in liking between the control and 15% sample. The 30% cricket powder cookie showed a decrease in consumer acceptance. Mexican and Spanish consumers liked the 15% sample significantly more than the control and 30% sample. Spanish consumers also like the control more than the 30% sample. The substitution of 15% cricket powder does not negatively impact liking in this product and, in fact, may improve both liking and protein content. Further research is necessary to determine whether this finding can help to mitigate the impact of insect-containing ingredients. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: High protein and sustainability are two key aspects being used to promote products in many markets. The protein content and sustainability of insect-based ingredients could make more competitive baked products if certain negative aspects, such as sensory and emotional and psychological barriers, can be overcome. This study focused on three specific countries but products using insect powder as an ingredient have the potential to be used in other regions or countries as acceptable products. With the correct marketing, such products could become a competitive choice in the product category. Background: Pericoronal radiolucent lesions are a common radiographic finding, but it is rare that they occur in multiple forms. Multiple calcifying hyperplastic dental follicles (MCHDF) are entities with few cases described to date; nevertheless, they appear to have a very particular phenotypic pattern., Cases Presentation: Case 1: A 10-year-old male was evaluated radiographically, revealing four impacted canines, each accompanied by unilocular pericoronal radiolucency. Case 2: A 16-year-old male was planning orthodontic treatment; following his radiological evaluation all third molars were found to be accompanied with pericoronal radiolucencies. Enucleation, and third molar removal along with the pericoronal tissue were the respective treatments. Microscopically, in both cases, the specimens shown odontogenic epithelium, and type I and II calcifications in the hyperplastic follicles, all these characteristics were consistent with MCHDF., Conclusion: Although MCHDF are a rare entity, they must be considered in the differential diagnosis of multiple pericoronal lesions. Under the light of the current evidence, the histological findings may be relatively heterogeneous, but their integration with both the clinical data, which are apparently particular, and with the radiographic characteristics, can lead to a definitive diagnosis.

In humans, mRNA polyadenylation involves the participation of about 20 factors in four main complexes that recognize specific RNA sequences. Notably, CFIm25, CPSF73, and PAP have essential roles for poly(A) site selection, mRNA cleavage, and adenosine residues polymerization. Besides the relevance of polyadenylation for gene expression, information is scarce in intestinal protozoan parasites that threaten human health. To better understand polyadenylation in Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, and Cryptosporidium parvum, which represent leading causes of diarrhea worldwide, genomes were screened for orthologs of human factors. Results showed that Entamoeba histolytica and C. parvum have 16 and 12 proteins out of the 19 human proteins used as queries, respectively, while G. lamblia seems to have the smallest polyadenylation machinery with only six factors. Remarkably, CPSF30, CPSF73, CstF77, PABP2, and PAP, which were found in all parasites, could represent the core polyadenylation machinery. Multiple genes were detected for several proteins in Entamoeba, while gene redundancy is lower in Giardia and Cryptosporidium. Congruently with their relevance in the polyadenylation process, CPSF73 and PAP are present in all parasites, and CFIm25 is only missing in Giardia. Background: Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) is a significant public health problem in Sonora, Mexico, resulting in thousands of cases and hundreds of deaths. Outbreaks of RMSF are perpetuated by heavy brown dog tick infestations in and around homes. During 2009-2015, there were 61 RMSF cases and 23 deaths in a single community of Sonora (Community A)., Methods: An integrated intervention was carried out from March-November 2016 aimed at reducing tick populations with long-acting acaricidal collars on dogs, environmental acaricides applied to peri-domestic areas and RMSF education. Tick levels were measured by inspection of community dogs to monitor efficacy of the intervention. A similar neighborhood (Community B) was selected for comparison and received standard care (acaricide treatment and education)., Results: The prevalence of tick-infested dogs in Community A declined from 32.5% to 8.8% (p<0.01). No new cases of RMSF were identified in this area during the subsequent 18 mo. By comparison, the percentage of tick-infested dogs in Community B decreased from 19% to 13.4% (p=0.36) and two cases were reported, including one death., Conclusions: Community-based interventions using an integrated approach to control brown dog ticks can diminish the morbidity and mortality attributable to RMSF., (© The Author(s) 2019. Starch-based films with phenolic extracts could replace the use of petroleum-based plastics. In this study, octenyl succinate starch (OSS) films with pecan nutshell extract (PSE) or hazelnut skin extract (HSE) were prepared. The water resistance, as well as the optical, physical, mechanical, and biodegradable properties of these films, were investigated. The PSE and HSE improved the water resistance (decreasing the solubility to 17% and increasing the contact angle to 96.80°) and UV-light barrier properties of the films. For PSE and HSE, as their concentrations increased, the film rigidity decreased since these extracts acted as plasticizers. Micrographs obtained by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) depicted a homogeneous surface as a result of extracts dispersion through the polymeric matrix and the interactions between the phenolic compounds (PC) of the extracts and the OSS. The phenolic extracts from nut by-products and octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) starch could be used to develop films to replace the conventional plastics.

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) have been used for many decades, both for the control of pests in agriculture and for the control of vectors of human and animal diseases. Several recent studies have reported significant concentrations of these compounds in multiple environmental substrates due to their persistence, as well as the effect they have on ecosystem health, human health, and wildlife populations. In the present study, organochlorine pesticide residues were determined and quantified in 260 blood samples from different populations of the Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) from 11 rural ex-henequen sites of the state of Yucatan, Mexico. The organochlorine groups detected, following an order of predominance and concentration, were: ΣDienes (0.0557 ppm) > ΣDDTs (0.0481 ppm) > ΣEndosulfans (0.0376 ppm) > and ΣHCHs (0.0319 ppm). The highest levels of OCPs were recorded in the opossums captured in the towns of Chicxulub and Cacalchen. In 6 of the 11 localities, the OCPs detected in the opossums showed significant differences in concentration, whereas the opossums in 4 of the 11 localities did not present this difference. The results confirm the presence and persistence of OCPs in the rural environmental of Yucatan due to both the misuse and abuse of the OCPs by rural populations. In addition, the synanthropic characteristics and abundant populations of D. virginiana in the Yucatecan region make it a good candidate to serve as a biomonitor of environmental pollution in the Yucatan Peninsula. This could aid in assessing the effects exposure to pesticides and other contaminants have on the health of the Yucatecan population, whether short, medium, or long term.

A strategy for food preservation, based on a methanol-HCl squid skin extract ( Dosidicus gigas ) (JSSE), was evaluated at two concentrations in yellowfin tuna fish pâtés, which were stored at 4 and 8 °C for 20 day. The JSSE was characterized by determining its antioxidant and mutagenic activities. A yellowfin tuna pâté was elaborated, with and without the addition of the JSSE. An affective sensory analysis was performed to establish consumers' preferences. During a 20-day storage period, the water activity (a w ), pH, color difference (ΔE* ab ), microbiological analysis, lipid oxidation and sensory quality attributes were evaluated, and the results were compared with the results of the butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and control treatments. The JSSE showed antioxidant activity against the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH ●+ ) and 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS ● ) radicals and did not induce mutation, according to the Ames' Salmonella test, nor chromosomal abnormalities, according to the onion root-tip cell assay. The consumer analysis demonstrated a higher preference for the pâté with the added JSSE in seven out of the eight evaluated attributes. During storage, the JSSE neither had an impact on a w nor pH, maintained lower ΔE* ab values, inhibited the microbial activity and lipid oxidation (unlike the control pâté), and preserved the sensory quality attributes, unlike the BHA and control treatments. This study showed that the JSSE has biologically active pigments that can act as antioxidants and antimicrobials in yellowfin tuna fish pâtés.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are the fastest growing chronic complication of diabetes mellitus, with more than 400 million people diagnosed globally, and the condition is responsible for lower extremity amputation in 85% of people affected, leading to high-cost hospital care and increased mortality risk. Neuropathy and peripheral arterial disease trigger deformities or trauma, and aggravating factors such as infection and edema are the etiological factors for the development of DFUs. DFUs require identifying the etiology and assessing the co-morbidities to provide the correct therapeutic approach, essential to reducing lower-extremity amputation risk. This review focuses on the current treatment strategies for DFUs with a special emphasis on tissue engineering techniques and regenerative medicine that collectively target all components of chronic wound pathology.

The transmission of diseases through parasites is a key mechanism in the regulation of plant and animal populations in ecosystems. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the relative effect of the variables that can shape the specificity of host-parasite interactions. Previous studies have found that specialization of antagonistic interactions between fly ectoparasites and bats changes according to forest type, host richness, and roosting ecology of bats. In this study, we tested these hypotheses using data from 48 bat communities. In general, our results support previous findings that bat-fly interactions are specialized, resulting in lower niche overlap among bat flies species. In addition, we found that the specificity of bat-fly interactions is lower in tropical mountain forests and is positively related with the richness of bat host species of each study site. Finally, there was a higher bat flies niche overlap in smaller bat-fly interaction networks recorded in bat roosts in caves. We conclude that the roosting ecology of bats could be a key factor to understand the mechanisms related to the horizontal transmission of ectoparasitic flies among bats.

Objective: To evaluate the performance of an instrument for predicting chronic chikungunya arthritis (CCA) in adult patients., Methods: A diagnostic test study was conducted and data from 217 confirmed cases of chikungunya virus (CHIKV) illness were analyzed. Two chronic chikungunya arthralgia scales (3-item CCAS-3 and 4-item CCAS-4) were constructed., Results: Modest performance of the CCAS-3 scale was documented at the two given cut-off points. A CCAS-4 score ≥3 showed high sensitivity and specificity for predicting the persistence of CCA at 12 months after acute disease., Conclusions: If replicated in other populations, these results could be useful in the medical management of patients with symptomatic CHIKV infection., (Copyright © 2019 The Author(s).
