Abstract

Photometric stereo uses images of objects illuminated from various directions to calculate surface normals which can be used to generate 3D meshes of the object. Such meshes can be used by engineers to estimate damage of a concrete surface, or track damage progression over time to inform maintenance decisions. This dataset [1] was collected to quantify the uncertainty in a photometric stereo test rig through both the comparison with a well characterised method (coordinate measurement machine) and experiment virtualisation. Data was collected for 9 real objects using both the test rig and the coordinate measurement machine. These objects range from clay statues to damaged concrete slabs. Furthermore, synthetic data for 12 objects was created via virtual renders generated using Blender (3D software) [2]. The two methods of data generation allowed the decoupling of the physical rig (used to light and photograph objects) and the photometric stereo algorithm (used to convert images and lighting information into 3D meshes). This data can allow users to: test their own photometric stereo algorithms, with specialised data created for structural health monitoring applications; provide an industrially relevant case study to develop and test uncertainty quantification methods on test rigs for structural health monitoring of concrete; or develop data processing methodologies for the alignment of scaled, translated, and rotated data.

2. Characterization of SWOT Water Level Errors on Seine Reservoirs and La Bassée Gravel Pits: Impacts on Water Surface Energy Budget Modeling

Abstract

The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) space mission will map surface area and water level changes in lakes at the global scale. Such new data are of great interest to better understand and model lake dynamics as well as to improve water management. In this study, we used the large-scale SWOT simulator developed at the French Space National Center (CNES) to estimate the expected measurement errors of the water level of different water bodies in France. These water bodies include five large reservoirs of the Seine River and numerous small gravel pits located in the Seine alluvial plain of La Bassée upstream of the city of Paris. The results show that the SWOT mission will allow to observe water levels with a precision of a few tens of centimeters (10 cm for the largest water reservoir (Orient), 23 km2), even for the small gravel pits of size of a few hectares (standard deviation error lower than 0.25 m for water bodies larger than 6 ha). The benefit of the temporal sampling for water level monitoring is also highlighted on time series of pseudo-observations based on real measurements perturbed with the simulated noise errors. Then, the added value of these future data for the simulation of lake energy budgets is shown using the FLake lake model through sensitivity experiments. Results show that the SWOT data will help to model the surface temperature of the studied water bodies with a precision better than 0.5 K and the evaporation with an accuracy better than 0.2 mm/day. These large improvements compared to the errors obtained when a constant water level is prescribed (1.2 K and 0.6 mm/day) demonstrate the potential of SWOT for monitoring the lake energy budgets at global scale in addition to the other foreseen applications in operational reservoir management.

Abstract

19 pages, 21 figures, 1 table, Oceanic turbulent flows develop complicated patterns, with eddies, filaments and shear currents. Although usually referred as chaotic, their inner organization is strongly hierarchical: turbulent flows develop cascades, which transfer properties such as energy or scalar density from larger to smaller scales. In this work, we present a novel algorithm based on the cascade and able to fill data gaps in satellite images (particularly, chlorophyll concentration maps). The first step is to show that cascade processes for chlorophyll-a concentration images take a simple, explicit form when an appropriate wavelet (here Battle–Lemarié of order 3) representation is used. A reconstruction algorithm exploiting the cascade structure is then given with a detailed description. We discuss the validity and quality of this algorithm when applied to SeaWiFS and MODIS-Aqua ocean color images. An application to merging data from multiple satellite missions is presented together with a demonstration of the benefit of this algorithm over two other merging methods, Financial support for this work was provided by the CNES funding to LEGOS.
