Abstract

This open access book is a valuable resource for students in health and other professions and practicing professionals interested in supporting effective change in self-management behaviors in chronic disease, such as medication taking, physical activity and healthy eating. Developed under the auspices of the Train4Health project, funded by the Erasmus+ program of the European Union, the book contains six chapters written by international contributors from different disciplines. This chapter presents open-access educational products that supplement this book: case studies and a web application to simulate behaviour change support in persons with chronic disease. The former is of particular interest for academic educators, while the latter may interest students independently pursuing training outside the classroom. These products can also be useful for professionals aiming to enhance behaviour change competencies in practice. First, it addresses key aspects of product development, including hallmarks such as the incorporation of behaviour change science and transnational co-production with users. Then, the main features of case studies and the web application with 2D virtual humans are described.

Abstract

A ansiedade, cada vez mais frequente na nossa sociedade, pode ser muito debilitante em situações extremas e até mesmo conduzir a problemas de saúde sérios, se não for tratada de forma adequada. Este artigo descreve uma aplicação para apoio ao tratamento da ansiedade social, mais especificamente a ansiedade de falar em público. A aplicação envolve: i) uma simulação que se desenrola num cenário virtual de um auditório contendo um conjunto de humanos virtuais animados com comportamentos controláveis e ii) uma interface através da qual o terapeuta controla estes comportamentos e um conjunto de características e de eventos da simulação. O uso de ambientes de Realidade Virtual no tratamento de fobias surgiu na década de 90 e implica, habitualmente custos elevados. O desafio que tentámos abrac¸ar com este trabalho foi desenvolver uma aplicação de baixo custo. Para desenvolver a aplicação escolhemos o Blender, uma ferramenta de uso livre para a criação de animações 3D e videojogos. The IViHumans platform supports the development of diverse applications with virtual humans. It comprises one layer for graphical processing and one for artificial intelligence. The layers were projected to run in different processes, communicating by means of a simple, yet effective and extensible client/server protocol that we projected and implemented. In this framing, the graphical processing layer plays the role of server, while the artificial intelligence layer occupies the position of the client. Abstract

Em aplicações de Realidade Aumentada, quando a cor dos elementos gráficos, que são desenhados sobre uma imagem real, é semelhante à cor do fundo circundante, torna-se difícil identificar esses elementos. O ajuste dinâmico do aspecto dos símbolos (objectos virtuais), em função da cor do fundo, deverá permitir melhorar a legibilidade da informação a transmitir ao utilizador. O objectivo deste trabalho é identificar um conjunto de adaptações a aplicar aos símbolos que permitam realçá-los mas sem alterar a sua semântica. Neste artigo apresentamos o resultado de dois estudos que efectuámos. No primeiro, averiguámos as preferências dos utilizadores relativamente às seguintes adaptações dos símbolos: adição de um rebordo, ajuste da luminosidade da cor, aumento do tamanho, e alteração da cor dos caracteres no interior do símbolo. Os utilizadores preferiram maioritariamente a adição de rebordo e em segundo lugar o ajuste da luminosidade da cor. Abstract

Background: Conversational agents, which we defined as computer programs that are designed to simulate two-way human conversation by using language and are potentially supplemented with nonlanguage modalities, offer promising avenues for health interventions for different populations across the life course. There is a lack of open-access and user-friendly resources for identifying research trends and gaps and pinpointing expertise across international centers. Objective: Our aim is to provide an overview of all relevant evidence on conversational agents for health and well-being across the life course. Specifically, our objectives are to identify, categorize, and synthesize—through visual formats and a searchable database—primary studies and reviews in this research field. Methods: An evidence map was selected as the type of literature review to be conducted, as it optimally corresponded to our aim. We systematically searched 8 databases (MEDLINE; CINAHL; Web of Science; Scopus; the Cochrane, ACM, IEEE, and Joanna Briggs Institute databases; and Google Scholar). We will perform backward citation searching on all included studies. The first stage of a double-stage screening procedure, which was based on abstracts and titles only, was conducted by using predetermined eligibility criteria for primary studies and reviews. An operational screening procedure was developed for streamlined and consistent screening across the team. Double data extraction will be performed with previously piloted data collection forms. We will appraise systematic reviews by using A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR) 2. Primary studies and reviews will be assessed separately in the analysis. Data will be synthesized through descriptive statistics, bivariate statistics, and subgroup analysis (if appropriate) and through high-level maps such as scatter and bubble charts. The development of the searchable database will be informed by the research questions and data extraction forms. Results: As of April 2021, the literature search in the eight databases was concluded, yielding a total of 16,351 records. The first stage of screening, which was based on abstracts and titles only, resulted in the selection of 1282 records of primary studies and 151 records of reviews. These will be subjected to second-stage screening. A glossary with operational definitions for supporting the study selection and data extraction stages was drafted. The anticipated completion date is October 2021. Conclusions: Our wider definition of a conversational agent and the broad scope of our evidence map will explicate trends and gaps in this field of research. Additionally, our evidence map and searchable database of studies will help researchers to avoid fragmented research efforts and wasteful redundancies. Finally, as part of the Harnessing the Power of Conversational e-Coaches for Health and Well-being Through Swiss-Portuguese Collaboration project, our work will also inform the development of an international taxonomy on conversational agents for health and well-being, thereby contributing to terminology standardization and categorization. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Abstract

Augmented Reality (AR) on mobile devices is an expanding area. In the last decade, we have seen a huge growth in the development of applications that use this technology to add useful information to the user concerning the environment that surrounds him. However, the use of AR in small devices is challenging. For example, when visualizing points of interest, there is no prior control over their number and location, thus, the overlapping of several symbols may occur. On the other hand, the addition of information to the real image does not have to be confined to objects in the user's field of view. The inclusion of clues about the existence of relevant objects outside the field of view (off-screen objects) is an important contribution for navigation through the space of information available to the user. Another aspect to keep in mind is the ability to express the information's relevance, this is, adapt the representation according to user's preferences. A Realidade Aumentada (RA) tem vindo a atingir grandes desenvolvimentos aplicacionais na última década, em parte devido à expansão da indústria de dispositivos móveis e ao bom compromisso que apresentam entre a portabilidade, capacidade de processamento, e recursos de entrada e saída de dados. Abstract

A perspectiva linear é uma das ferramentas fundamentais no trabalho dos arquitectos. Porém, a sua capacidade de traduzir graficamente a percepção visual humana é limitada. Abstract

Conferência Internacional realizada em Lisboa de 15-16 de novembro de 2018. Online distance learning introduces several challenges, such as the dependence of online tools, the asynchronous communication between teachers and students, and the lack of synchronous social engagement level that inclassroom teaching can leverage. The existence of an online tutor 24 hours/day would be an interesting asset to potentially work as an additional learning support tool. The Virtual Tutoring project aims at the development of solutions involving anthropomorphic 3D avatars that work as both virtual online tutors in the Moodle e-learning platform as well as coaches in a mobile application that interact empathically with the students by predicting their emotional state and selecting appropriate emotion regulation strategies. This paper presents the current status of the project, preliminary evaluations with students, and future developments.
