Abstract

The Brazilian government is using the circus as a means to prevent the poor children of Sao Paulo from becoming victims of violence. The first circus to serve as an extra-curricular activity for slum kids was initiated in 1988 by Alda Marco Antonio. The project later on evolved into a sociocultural program called 'Joining In,' which explores the artistic ability and talents of kids. The circus, which also serves to inculcate responsibility and develop self-worth, has been an effective instrument of the government to save the lives of children from underprivileged families.

A performer in a Russian circus describes her experiences as a high wire walker and as a dog trainer. Training dogs is free of risks entailed in high wire walking but it is very difficult, as it requires talent and involves constant tension. However, it is more interesting and more convenient than training other animals. Siberian audiences enjoy themselves at the circus, unlike Muscovites. The Soviet Circus has become a symbol of a past era, remembered only by its workers and the West. Circuses in big Russian cities continue to do well despite lack of government subsidies.
