Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg), a Gram-negative oral pathogen, promotes and accelerates periodontitis-associated gut disorders. Intestinal epithelial barrier dysfunction is crucial in the pathogenesis of intestinal and systemic diseases. In this study, we sought to elucidate the protective role of cinnamaldehyde (CNM, an activator of Nrf2) against P. gingivalis (W83) and Pg-derived lipopolysaccharide (Pg-LPS) induced intestinal epithelial barrier dysfunction via antioxidative mechanisms in IEC-6 cells. IEC-6 (ATCC, CRL-1592) cells were pretreated with or without CNM (100 µM), in the presence or absence of P. gingivalis (strain W83, 109 MOI) or Pg-LPS (1, 10, and 100 µg/mL), respectively, between 0–72 h time points by adopting a co-culture method. Intestinal barrier function, cytokine secretion, and intestinal oxidative stress protein markers were analyzed. P. gingivalis or Pg-LPS significantly (p < 0.05) increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels expressing oxidative stress damage. Pg-LPS, as well as Pg alone, induces inflammatory cytokines via TLR-4 signaling. Furthermore, infection reduced Nrf2 and NAD(P)H quinone dehydrogenase 1 (NQO1). Interestingly, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) protein expression significantly (p < 0.05) increased with Pg-LPS or Pg infection, with elevated levels of nitric oxide (NO). CNM treatment suppressed both Pg- and Pg-LPS-induced intestinal oxidative stress damage by reducing ROS, MDA, and NO production. Furthermore, CNM treatment significantly upregulated the expression of tight junction proteins via increasing the phosphorylation levels of PI3K/Akt/Nrf2 suppressing inflammatory cytokines. CNM protected against Pg infection-induced intestinal epithelial barrier dysfunction by activating the PI3K/Akt-mediated Nrf2 signaling pathway in IEC-6 cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study cinnamaldehyde (CA) doped polyurethane cholesteryl pelargonate cholesteric liquid crystal composite membranes were produced and their properties were examined for use in biological applications. The relationship between the blood coagulation and protein adsorption was studied and the results showed that increasing CA concentration allowed an improvement in biological properties of them. Additionally, the effect of CA on the hyrophobicity of these membranes was investigated by determining water holding capacity, contact angles. The mechanical strength of these membranes were determined and it was found that their strength increased and the ability to elongate decreased with an increasing CA dopant concentration. A new hybrid catalyst consisting of cobalt nanoparticles immobilized onto cellulose was developed. The cellulosic matrix is derived from date palm biomass waste, which was oxidized by sodium periodate to yield dialdehyde and was further derivatized by grafting orthoaminophenol as a metal ion complexing agent. The new hybrid catalyst was characterized by FT-IR, solid-state NMR, XRD, SEM, TEM, ICP, and XPS. The catalytic potential of the nanocatalyst was then evaluated in the catalytic hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol under mild experimental conditions in aqueous medium in the presence of NaBH4 at room temperature. The reaction achieved complete conversion within a short period of 7 min. The rate constant was calculated to be K = 8.7 × 10−3 s−1. The catalyst was recycled for eight cycles. Furthermore, we explored the application of the same catalyst for the hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde using dihydrogen under different reaction conditions. The synergistic effects of eugenol and cinnamaldehyde (MEC) were firstly used for quinoa fresh noodles (QFN) preservation. The amount of eugenol and cinnamaldehyde in combination was reduced 75% MIC value and 50% MBC value compared to the single application of eugenol and cinnamaldehyde respectively. The shelf life of QFN was prolonged 2.5 times by MEC at 25°C. Besides, MEC can significantly maintain the texture and color of QFN with less odor impact. Further mechanisms of MEC in anti-Bacillus velezensis were suggested to affect the lag phase during growth, and disrupt the cell integrity with adenosine triphosphate and protein leakage. In addition, the observing winkle and break of cell membrane was also obtained by scanning electron microscope. Besides, a lower concentration of MEC inhibited the growth of biofilm. MEC did present a synergistic and strengthening antibacterial capacity in the inhibition of B. velezensis, and can be suggested as an antimicrobial agent in food preservations. Simple Summary: Garlic oil and cinnamaldehyde are plant-derived bioactive compounds with antimicrobial activity, which might contribute to improving the efficiency of rumen fermentation. However, an apparent adaptation of microbial populations to these compounds is usually observed over time. In this study, the effects of garlic oil and cinnamaldehyde on rumen fermentation and microbial populations were assessed in two periods of time using an in vitro system (Rusitec fermenters). Despite this possible adaptation, garlic oil supplementation reduced methane production and enhanced the energy profile of fermentation end products over time, whereas cinnamaldehyde appeared to increase the microbial protein supply to the animal. Thus, the use of these compounds as feed additives could contribute to increasing the efficiency and sustainability of ruminant production systems, bringing both economic and environmental benefits. Garlic oil (GO) and cinnamaldehyde (CIN) have shown potential to modify rumen fermentation. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of GO and CIN on rumen fermentation, microbial protein synthesis (MPS), and microbial populations in Rusitec fermenters fed a mixed diet (50:50 forage/concentrate), as well as whether these effects were maintained over time. Six fermenters were used in two 15-day incubation runs. Within each run, two fermenters received no additive, 180 mg/L of GO, or 180 mg/L of CIN. Rumen fermentation parameters were assessed in two periods (P1 and P2), and microbial populations were studied after each of these periods. Garlic oil reduced the acetate/propionate ratio and methane production (p < 0.001) in P1 and P2 and decreased protozoal DNA concentration and the relative abundance of fungi and archaea after P1 (p < 0.05). Cinnamaldehyde increased bacterial diversity (p < 0.01) and modified the structure of bacterial communities after P1, decreased bacterial DNA concentration after P2 (p < 0.05), and increased MPS (p < 0.001). The results of this study indicate that 180 mg/L of GO and CIN promoted a more efficient rumen fermentation and increased the protein supply to the animal, respectively, although an apparent adaptive response of microbial populations to GO was observed. The use of essential oils in animal feed is increasing, but it needs to be applicable. This study determined whether a reformulated milk replacer containing a blend of essential oils composed of cinnamon, oregano, and eucalyptus improves suckling calves' immune and oxidative systems, consequently improving productive performance. Sixteen Holstein calves (ten days old) suckled for 60 days. The animals were divided into a control group (n = 8), which received the commercial milk replacer, and a treatment group (n = 8), which received a milk replacer containing oils. The animals were fed twice daily with 0.25 kg of milk replacer diluted in two liters of water at each feeding. The milk replacer in the treatment group contained 5 g of additive per kg. The milk replacer containing essential oils had a strong aroma and odor and consequently was rejected by two calves in the treatment group. These animals were withdrawn from the experiment after five days of attempting to adapt them. The calves also received pelleted concentrate from the beginning of the experiment and chopped hay from 28 days onwards (both ad libitum). The treatment group showed more weight gain and feed efficiency than control animals. Lower lymphocyte counts were observed in calves fed milk replacers containing essential oils. Total serum protein was higher due to increased globulins in calves in the treatment group than in the control group. Serum immunoglobulin A and heavy-chain immunoglobulins were higher in the treatment group. Lower levels of lipid peroxidation and higher total antioxidants were observed in the serum of calves in the treatment group. We conclude that some animals may not adapt to the milk replacer containing essential oils due to the odor; however, the calves that consumed the milk containing the essential oils showed stimulated humoral immune responses that minimized the physiological oxidative stress of the rearing phase and consequently favored growth and weight gain. The antibacterial activity of Cinnamaldehyde against Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in Bovine Mastitis is investigated in this study, providing insights into inhibition mechanisms and elucidating the effects on bacterial cell membranes. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration were determined in this study. In addition, growth curves and a time-kill assay were constructed to assess the antibacterial activity of Cinnamaldehyde. The study revealed that the MIC values ranged from 62.5 to 125 μg/mL, and the MBC values ranged from 125 to 250 μg/mL. The presence of sublethal concentrations of Cinnamaldehyde impeded bacterial growth, while high concentrations demonstrated a significant and rapid bactericidal effect. Subsequently, we examined cell morphology using SEM and TEM, evaluated membrane integrity via laser confocal fluorescence microscopy, and measured levels of β-galactosidase, extracellular DNA release, LDH activity, and ROS, to assess the antibacterial mechanism of Cinnamaldehyde. The findings indicated that with higher concentrations of Cinnamaldehyde, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus demonstrated significant morphological alterations and disruption of both the cell wall and membrane. Furthermore, Cinnamaldehyde disrupted the integrity of membranes and increased permeability of the outer membrane in a manner dependent on its concentration. Cinnamaldehyde notably triggered the release of β-galactosidase, extracellular DNA, and LDH, in addition to elevating cellular ROS levels. Finally, the effect of Cinnamaldehyde on the transcription levels of genes related to cell membrane synthesis was assessed using RT-qPCR, and the effect of Cinnamaldehyde on the total protein content of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus cells was assessed using WB. The RT-qPCR results showed that Cinnamaldehyde at 1xMIC notably upregulated the transcription levels of genes related to fatty acid biosynthesis in Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus cell membranes, with a significant or highly significant effect. The WB results showed that Cinnamaldehyde exerts its antibacterial action by suppressing protein expression in Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. These findings illustrate that Cinnamaldehyde exerts a potent inhibitory effect on Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, establishing a fundamental foundation for the potential use of Cinnamaldehyde essential oil as an antibacterial agent in the treatment of bovine mastitis, in accordance with established scientific standards. The chemo-selective hydrogenation of carbonyl bond of cinnamaldehyde to cinamyl alcohol with star-shaped nickel (Ni) supported tungsten oxide (WO 3) catalyst was fabricated using a simple one pot synthesis approach. Nano-structured Ni particles were dispersed over WO 3 nanoparticles by employing this surfactant-assisted synthesis method. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) measurements were carried out to examine the chemical nature, morphology and surface area of the synthesized catalyst. By selective hydrogenation of the cinnamaldehyde, the synthesized nanostructured catalyst was highly effective for selective production of cinnamyl alcohol. Various reaction parameters were assessed with regard to substrate conversion, product yield, and selectivity towards the desired product, including temperature, time, catalyst loading, and pressure. The catalyst achieved >97% conversion and 84% selectivity for cinnamyl alcohol under optimized reaction conditions. Even after the fifth cycle of recycling performance, the catalyst was still effective for the conversion. The remarkable efficiency of the catalyst may be associated with the strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) between metallic Ni and WO 3 substrate. BACKGROUND: This study aimed to determine the effects of a mixture of glycerol monolaurate and cinnamaldehyde (GCM) supplementation on the laying performance, egg quality, antioxidant capacity, and serum parameters of laying hens. A total of 1120 14‐week‐old Jingfen‐1 strain laying hens with similar performance were randomly allocated to four dietary treatments: control, and GCM groups supplemented with 250, 500, or 1000 mg kg−1 for 12 weeks. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, GCM‐supplemented groups significantly reduced (P < 0.05) the rate of unqualified eggs of laying hens aged 17–24 weeks. Supplementation of GCM significantly increased (P < 0.05) yolk color and serum glutathione peroxidase (GSH‐Px) activity but decreased (P < 0.05) the hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content in the serum of laying hens at the age of 20 weeks. Furthermore, groups supplemented with GCM showed a significant increase (P < 0.05) in Haugh unit, yolk color, activities of total superoxide dismutase and GSH‐Px, and the glucose content in serum, and a decrease (P < 0.05) in the content of urea nitrogen and H2O2 and malondialdehyde in serum of laying hens at the age of 24 weeks. 500 mg kg−1 GCM supplementation significantly increased (P < 0.05) the number of large white follicles and 1000 mg kg−1 GCM supplementation decreased the number of large yellow follicles in 28‐week‐old laying hens. This study employed polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), cinnamaldehyde (CIN), and potassium sorbate (KS) as raw materials for the production of PVA/CIN/KS cross-linked films using the casting method. Various methods, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), tensile strength (TS), elongation at break (EB), water vapor permeability (WVP), and transparency, were conducted on the cross-linked films. Additionally, we assessed the antibacterial activity of the films against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, and examined their efficacy in preserving citrus fruits.The results demonstrated an enhancement in the mechanical properties of the films after cross-linking. Specifically, when the CIN content was 20%, the maximum TS and EB values reached 25.58 MPa and 555.98%, respectively. Cross-linking induced a denser molecular structure, significantly improving water vapor barrier properties. The WVP value decreased from 1.28 to 0.87 g·mm/KPa·m²·h, and water resistance increased from 32.28 to 12.63%. In antibacterial tests, the cross-linked films exhibited notable inhibitory effects against both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, with a particularly strong impact against Staphylococcus aureus. In the citrus preservation test, citrus fruits packaged with cross-linked films maintained a considerable level of commercial value even after 15 days. Glioblastoma is the most common primary malignant brain tumor in adults. Temozolomide (TMZ) is an FDAapproved drug used to treat this type of cancer. Cinnamaldehyde (CIN) is a derivative of cinnamon extract and makes up 99% of it. The aim of this study was to investigate the in vitro combined effect of CIN and TMZ on human glioblastoma multiforme T98G cell line viability. In this study, we used 3-(4,5 dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-tertazolium bromide (MTT) method to evaluate the extent of IC50, acridine orange, Giemsa and Hoechst staining to evaluate the manner of apoptosis and the Western blotting method to examine the expression change of apoptotic proteins. Our results show that TMZ has an inhibitory effect on CIN when both used in combination at concentrations of 300 and 100 µM (P<0.05) and has a cytotoxic effect when used alone at the same concentrations (P<0.05). The western blotting result showed that TMZ at concentrations of 2,000 and 1,000 µM significantly increased Bax expression and decreased Bcl2 expression (P<0.05), indicating that TMZ induced apoptosis through the mitochondrial pathway. However, CIN had no effect on Bax and Bcl2 expressions, thus causing apoptosis from another pathway. Also, the Bax:Bcl2 expression ratio at concentrations combined was lower than that for TMZ 1,000 µM and higher than that for CIN 150 and 100 µM (P<0.05), which confirms the inhibitory effect of TMZ on CIN. Globally, breast cancer is not only the most frequently diagnosed cancer but also the leading cause of cancer death in women. Depending on breast cancer histotype, conventional breast cancer treatment options vary greatly in efficacy and accompanying side effects. Thus, there is a need for more effective and safer strategies that impact breast cancer at all stages. Plant-based natural products are easily available, with them proving effective and inexpensive. Two such phytochemicals are chlorogenic acid and cinnamaldehyde. Studies have shown their efficacy against different molecular subtypes of breast cancers in vitro and in vivo. In this review, we discuss their current status in anticancer research with specific emphasis on chlorogenic acid and cinnamaldehyde. We describe their multiple mechanisms of action in destroying breast cancer cells, their potential uses, and the need for translational applications. Laminectomy is a widely employed surgical procedure for the treatment of spinal stenosis, but it may lead to epidural fibrosis (EF) and failed back surgery syndrome. Cinnamaldehyde, a phenylpropanoid found in cinnamon, has demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In the present study, we hypothesized that topical application and systemic administration of cinnamaldehyde could be helpful in the prevention of EF in a rat laminectomy model. The rats were randomly assigned to control, local, and systemic Tween-80 and local and systemic cinnamaldehyde experimental groups (n = 6, per group). In the control group, just laminectomy was performed. In local treatment groups, applications were done just after the laminectomy onto dura. In systemic treatment groups, intraperitoneal administrations were performed following skin suturing. The degree of epidural fibrosis was evaluated macroscopically and histopathologically 4 weeks later. Macroscopic assessment revealed decreased EF with both topical and systemic cinnamaldehyde application, whereas microscopic examination results were not significant. Background: Cinnamaldehyde (CMD) is a major functional component of Cinnamomum verum and has shown treatment effects against diverse bone diseases. This study aimed to assess the anti-diabetic osteoporosis (DOP) potential of diabetes mellitus (DM) and to explore the underlying mechanism driving the activity of CMD. Methods: A DOP model was induced via an intraperitoneal injection of streptozocin (STZ) into Sprague-Dawley rats, and then two different doses of CMD were administered to the rats. The effects of CMD on the strength, remodeling activity, and histological structure of the bones were assessed. Changes in the netrin-1 related pathways also were detected to elucidate the mechanism of the anti-DOP activity by CMD. Results: CMD had no significant effect on the body weight or blood glucose level of the model rats. However, the data showed that CMD improved the bone strength and bone remodeling activity as well as attenuating the bone structure destruction in the DOP rats in a dose-dependent manner. The expression of netrin-1, DCC, UNC5B, RANKL, and OPG was suppressed, while the expression of TGF-ß1, cathepsin K, TRAP, and RANK was induced by the STZ injection. CMD administration restored the expression of all of these indicators at both the mRNA and protein levels, indicating that the osteoclast activity was inhibited by CMD. Conclusion: The current study demonstrated that CMD effectively attenuated bone impairments associated with DM in a STZ-induced DOP rat model, and the anti-DOP effects of CMD were associated with the modulation of netrin-1/DCC/UNC5B signal transduction. ABSTRACT: Cinnamomi Cortex was a material as medicinal and edible resources and it has been demonstrated that Cinnamomi Cortex aqueous extract (CCAE) possess hypoglycemic effect, but there were no active compounds identified as quality standard of CCAE to be used in the investigate of hypoglycemic activity. Hence, in this study, the quality standard and the hypoglycemic effect of CCAE were investigated. Cinnamaldehyde and coumarin as the quality control in CCAE were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. The results showed that the average yield of extraction was 10.06%. The concentration of coumarin was linear with peak area ranging from 0.02–1.00 μg/mL (r = 0.999 6, n = 6) and that of cinnamaldehyde also demonstrated a good linear relationship with peak area in the range of 1.05–52.50 μg/mL (r = 0.999 7, n = 6). The average recovery rate of coumarin and cinnamaldehyde was 99.42% and 100.11%, respectively. The investigation of hypoglycemic effect revealed that CCAE could improve weight loss, lower liver and pancreas indices, improve organ damage caused by diabetes, and lower fasting blood glucose, glycosylated serum protein (GSP) and total cholesterol (TC) levels. The results showed that CCAE can reduce fasting blood glucose and blood lipid levels in diabetic mice.

Abstract Traditional Epoxies take hours to cure before their properties can be realized and this restricts its use in applications where quick turn‐around time is imperative. Herein, we developed fast curing Epoxies (which cure within 2 h) using Vitrimer chemistries. A unique dynamic curing agent (bio‐based Schiff motif) consisting of an aldehyde (here, cinnamaldehyde) and an amine (here, mussel inspired dopamine) is used to facilitate imine exchange during the curing process and maintains the network integrity‐ a key requirement to achieve excellent structural properties in epoxy based components. By incorporating this covalent adaptable network, various epoxies were designed which can cure within 2 h. The resulting epoxy vitrimers exhibited high tensile strength (68 MPa), exceptionally high Tg (128°C), fast stress relaxation (a relaxation time of 15.2 s at 180°C) and an activation energy of 105 kJ/mol. This associative covalent adaptable network (imine exchange) also rendered the epoxies re‐processable and re‐usable and offers closed‐loop circularity in plastics. The resulting epoxy also exhibited self‐healing property triggered by the exchangeable bonds. The self‐healing behavior of this epoxy was manifested from the surface conductivity measurements wherein the conducting pathway (facilitated by spraying conducting particles on the vitrimer epoxy substrate) was restored post self‐healing in substrates containing epoxy vitrimers. In addition, the epoxies cured using this Schiff based motif dissolves in a specific solvent and can be recovered and re‐purposed. The excellent mechanical properties achieved by retaining the network integrity together with the self‐healing properties offers myriad applications for the designed epoxy cured using bio‐based Schiff motif. Highlights Developed fast curing Epoxies that cures in 2 h using Vitrimer chemistries. Fully bio‐based hardener was used to realize the network topology. The dynamic exchange reaction results in re‐processability, reusable, recyclable and self‐healable that is not possible in the case of traditional epoxy. It exhibited high tensile strength, exceptional Tg, fast stress relaxation and an activation energy of 105 KJ/mol.

In this research, the possibility of cinnamaldehyde encapsulating with high amylose starch using ultrasound treatment was studied. The resulting microcapsules had an average size of 636.36±59.041 nm. The included cinnamaldehyde was 53.44±1.29, which only increased by 3 percent during 28 days of storage. Also, cinnamaldehyde release was investigated under simulated mouth conditions including temperature, saliva composition, and shear stress, using SPME-GC-MS, which was followed by analytical modeling. Among analytical kinetic models, zero-degree, Korsmeyer-Peppas, and Makoid-Banakar models during in-mouth release, and Korsmeyer-Peppas model during storage had the greatest agreements with release profiles. Using the results a 3 phase, 2D, constant source , reservoir model was simulated and solved using Comsol Multiphysics 5.6. Mesh independence analysis and low RMSE (1.78×10-6) alongside high R2 (0.997) indicated the model’s success in predicting the release of cinnamaldehyde in simulated mouth conditions. Investigating the role of physiological factors and microcapsules properties revealed that interpersonal differences play a more important role in determining the release behavior of cinnamaldehyde from high amylose starch capsules. Model parameters were also optimized using the SNOPT algorithm.

Headache is one of the most common types of pain that approximately every individual experiences at some point in their life. Due to unknown pathophysiology, identification of the exact origin and causes of headache are challenging. Headache is a chronic condition that disturbs a person ̓s life. Various intervention such as including medication, massage therapy, aromatherapy, and herbal treatments are used to alleviate headaches. Medication is administered orally, intranasally, via injection, or topically through skin absorption. Traditional Persian medicine (TPM) introduces various herbal remedies to manage headaches. Cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum J.Presl), belongs to Lauraceae family, mentioned for the alleviation of headaches in TPM. Accordingly, current study was carried out to design and prepare a new topical herbal dosage form from Cinnamon essential oil. Following essential oil extraction, volatile constituents were analyzed via a Gas chromatography/Mass spectroscopy (GC/MS). Cinnamaldehyde was found as the major compound. Subsequently, appropriate amounts of the oil were subjected to cream formulations to check the pharmaceutical parameters. The final preparation underwent evaluations, including macroscopic and microscopic tests for odor, color, appearance, phase separation, as well as pH, rheology, centrifugation, microbial limits, and texture analysis. Finally, based on the quantification via GC, cinnamaldehyde was determined as 3982.68±116.04 µg in a 50 mg tube of 2.5% of the cinnamon bark essential oil. This investigation can be introduced to be examined as an herbal topical medication in the management of headache and cephalic pain.

Chemical pesticides have been conventionally used to control the stored grain pest infestation, but these are hazardous to humans and the environment. Therefore, the herbal pesticides are gaining more importance in insect pest management. The montmorillonite (MMT) nanoclay, is found to be an effective and underexplored adsorbent for fumigant formulation against stored grain pests. Additionally, essential oils (EOs) and their derivatives offer promising alternatives to conventional insecticides, but their application is constrained by higher volatilization, rapid decomposition, and less persistency. To address the issue, this study focuses on purifying microporous MMT through the sedimentation method and encapsulating cinnamaldehyde from cinnamon essential oil to produce a bio-nanocomposite (CEB) for management of insect pest infestations. Furthermore, the raw MMT, purified MMT, and CEB were characterized by different physiochemical techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The SEM-EDX analyses demonstrated shiny irregular sheets and confirmed the presence of C-atom along with Si, O, Al, and Mg. The average crystallite size for CEB is specified to be 9.69 nm. The persistency of the cinnamaldehyde and its effective release from the CEB was confirmed by FT-IR analysis until 30 days. CEB displayed potent fumigant toxicity (LC50 = 0.37 mg/cm3) and high repellency (93.33 %) against Callosobruchus chinensis. Quantitative analysis recorded elevated protein levels (5.47 mg/ml) in treated insects. Similarly, the qualitative analysis revealed up and down-regulation of six and eight protein bands, respectively. Overall, findings show that the formulated bio-nanocomposite can better manage pulse beetle infestations in stored grains.

As an important technology in fine chemical production, the selective hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes has attracted much attention in recent years. In the process of α,β-unsaturated aldehyde hydrogenation, a conjugated system is formed between >C=C< and >C=O, leading to hydrogenation at both ends of the conjugated system, which competes with each other and results in more complex products. Therefore, improving the reaction selectivity is also difficult in industrial fields. Recently, many researchers have reported that surface-active sites on catalysts play a crucial role in α,β-unsaturated aldehyde hydrogenation. This review attempts to summarize recent advances in understanding the effects of surface-active sites (SASs) over metal catalysts for enhancing the process of hydrogenation. The construction strategies and roles of SASs for hydrogenation catalysts are summarized. Particular attention has been given to the adsorption configuration and transformation mechanism of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes on catalysts, which contributes to understanding the relationship between SASs and hydrogenation activity. In addition, recent advances in metal-supported catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes to understand the role of SASs in hydrogenation are briefly reviewed. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of cinnamaldehyde (CA) on fasting blood glucose (FBG), body weight, lipid profile, and nesfatin-1 levels in healthy and diabetic (DM) rats. Methods: Ten groups with eight rats per group were used. Healthy and diabetic sham groups were administered 1 mL of saline for 28 days by intragastric gavage. Healthy and diabetic control groups were administered 1 mL 0.5 % dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) for 28 days by intragastric gavage. Other diabetic and healthy groups (HG) received 10, 20, and 40 mg/kg CA for 28 days by intragastric gavage, once daily. Diabetes was induced with streptozotocin (50 mg/kg intraperitoneally). Rats were defined as diabetic when FBG was > 250 mg/dL. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to assess serum nesfatin-1 concentrations. Fasting blood glucose (FBG) values were evaluated with a glucometer. Results: Day 28 weights of all DM and HG + 40 mg/kg CA groups were lower than day 1 weights (p < 0.05). Triglyceride values of DM + 40 mg/kg CA group were lower than DM sham and control group (p = 0.001). Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and cholesterol levels of the CA-administered healthy groups were higher than healthy control groups (p = 0.001). Nesfatin-1 levels of all DM groups were lower than all healthy groups, and nesfatin-1 levels of all CA-administered healthy and DM groups were lower than healthy and DM sham and control groups, but these were not significant (p > 0.001). Conclusion: Although not significant, the decrease in nesfatin-1 level is evidence that CA has an antiobesity effect in both healthy and diabetic rats. A novel liquid chromatographic method for the measurement of essential oils within animal feed additives was developed and applied. The simple and effective extraction protocol described yielded analyte recoveries more than 90% for cinnamaldehyde, eugenol, carvacrol, capsaicin, and dihydrocapsaicin for the feed additives tested. These five analytes were separated with a peak resolution of more than 1 on a C-18 reversed phase column yielding between 500 000–2 000 000 theoretical plates per meter. UV absorption detection at 210 nm provided limits of detection of approximately 1 µg of analyte per gram of solution for all analytes. Limits of quantitation were approximately 4 µg of analyte per gram of solution. Results indicated that while capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin were present at conserved levels within feed additives tested (0.2 and 0.05%, respectively), the content of cinnamaldehyde, eugenol, and carvacrol varied considerably. Rapid restoration of perfusion in ischemic myocardium is the most direct and effective treatment for coronary heart disease but may cause myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury (MIRI). Cinnamaldehyde (CA, C9H8O), a key component in the well‐known Chinese medicine cinnamomum cassia, has cardioprotective effects against MIRI. This study aimed to observe the therapeutic effect of CA on MIRI and to elucidate its potential mechanism. H9C2 rat cardiomyocytes were pretreated with CA solution at 0, 10, and 100 μM, respectively and subjected to oxygen‐glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R). Then the cell viability, the NF‐κB and caspase3 gene levels, the reduced glutathione (GSH)/oxidized glutathione (GSSG) ratio, superoxide dismutase (SOD) level, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, 4‐hydroxynonenal (4‐HNE), and malondialdehyde (MDA) were detected. The severity of DNA damage was assessed by tail moment (TM) values using alkaline comet assay. Besides, the DNA damage‐related proteins and the key proteins of the Nrf2 pathway were detected by western blot. CA treatment increased the cell viability, GHS/GSSG ratio, SOD level, PARP1, Nrf2, PPAR‐γ, and HO‐1 protein levels of H9C2 cardiomyocytes, while reducing NF‐κB, caspase3, ROS level, 4‐HNE and MDA content, γ‐H2AX protein level, and TM values. Inhibition of the Nrf2 pathway reversed the effect of CA on cell viability and apoptosis of OGD/R induced H9C2 cardiomyocytes. Besides, 100 μM CA was more effective than 10 μM CA. In the OGD/R‐induced H9C2 cardiomyocyte model, CA can protect cardiomyocytes from MIRI by attenuating lipid peroxidation and repairing DNA damage. Objective To establish method for simultaneous determination of hesperidin, cinnamaldehyde and eugenol in Chunyang Zhengqi capsules by high performance liquid chromatography. Methods The column was Agilent PorosheⅡ 120 ECC18 (4.6 mm×150 mm, 4 μm). The mobile phase was acetonitrile-water with gradient elution. The column temperature was 35℃. The flow rate was 1.0 ml/min, and the detection wavelength was 284 nm. Results The methodological verification showed that hesperidin, cinnamaldehyde and eugenol had a good linearity (r≥0.999 9). The precisions were less than 2.0%. The average recovery was between 98.0% and 101.9%. The stability and repeatability of RSD were also less than 3.0%, which met the requirements of method validation. The transient receptor potential (TRP) channel family, including TRPA1, is known to be involved in temperature sensing and response. Previous studies have shown that intragastric administration of cinnamaldehyde (a typical TRPA1 agonist) can change body temperature, but the role of TRPA1 in this response is not clear. In this study, we found that intragastric administration of cinnamaldehyde increased in the intrascapular brown adipose tissue (IBAT) and rectal temperatures. However, this effect was not observed in TRPA1 knockout mice, suggesting that TRPA1 is involved in these temperature changes. Intravenous cinnamaldehyde also increased IBAT and rectal temperatures, only in the presence of TRPA1. We also explored the contribution of the vagus nerve to these temperature changes and found that it played a limited role. Aqueous phase selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CALD), as a representative α,β-unsaturated aldehyde, into cinnamyl alcohol (CALA) has been investigated over monometallic Ru and bimetallic RuCo catalysts on pristine h-BN support. Using water as the solvent, the optimal 0.5%Ru-1.1%Co/h-BN catalyst exhibits 510 h−1 specific reaction rate and 78.9 % CALA selectivity as well as good recycling stability at 100 °C. Based on the structure characterizations of catalysts, metal nanoparticles consisting of metallic Ru0 and partially oxidized Ruδ+ sites are uniformly dispersed on h-BN thin sheets. In comparison to monometallic catalysts, additive Co metals in bimetallic RuCo/h-BN catalysts play significant geometric and electronic modification roles on Ru active sites depending on the Ru/Co ratio, and therefore remarkably enhances the preferential activation of CALD C O bond and selectivity of CALA product as well as accelerates the catalytic reaction. Furthermore, the hydrogen dissociative activation ability of various Ru and RuCo catalysts was evaluated, while the superior catalytic performance in water than other commonly used solvents was also clarified and discussed. As a typical bioactive compound from the bark and leaves of the trees of the genus Cinnamomum, cinnamaldehyde (CIN) is natural and safe. Its excellent antibacterial activity against various foodborne microorganisms is growingly regarded as a promising additive for improving and enhancing the properties of bio-based packaging films/coatings. This review systematically summarized the bio-based food packaging films/coatings containing CIN developed recently. The effects of CIN incorporation on physical and chemical properties of the antibacterial food packaging films/coatings, including thickness, color index, transparency, water content, water solubility, water contact angle, mechanical performances, water barrier performances, and antibacterial performances, were discussed. Simultaneously, this work also concluded that an explanation of the antibacterial mechanism of CIN and preparation methods of bio-based packaging films/coatings containing CIN/CIN carriers. Notably, the incorporation of CIN into the films/coatings could enhance their antibacterial performance extend the shelf-life of various foods, such as fish, meats, vegetables, fruits, and other perishable food, while improving their physical and chemical properties. Although incorporating CIN into food packaging films/coatings has been extensively studied, long-term follow-up research on the human safety of active food packaging films/coatings containing CIN needs to be carried out. Here, we proposed a difunctional antifouling strategy via constructing porous polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surface with a layer of aerogel by sol-gel method and grafted cinnamaldehyde chemically. The improvement in structure enhanced the liquid storage stability of coating, which in turn increases its anti-bioadhesive ability. In addition, the grafted cinnamaldehyde could also be used to act as a chemical antibacterial and is intelligently released in the face of harsh fouling environments, which played a key role in prolonging the antibacterial lifespan of the coating. After the 120-hour anti-bacteria experiment and the 25-day anti-algae experiment, the anti- Escherichia coli (anti- E. coli) rate and the anti-algae rate of the coating reached 99.6% and 99.9%, respectively, which was attributed to the excellent long-term antifouling properties of the coating. An NiZr/N‐doped TiO2/Ti3C2 catalyst was prepared by KBH4 reduction for cinnamaldehyde hydrogenation. Characterization results showed that the synthesis of N‐doped TiO2 on Ti3C2 and the uniform dispersion of TiO2 on the Ti3C2 surface increased the specific surface area of NiZr/Ti3C2 by 164.4 m2/g. N‐doping at a level of 19.03 % was used to replace O in the TiO2 lattice; the Ti−O−Ti peak in the XPS spectrum of the undoped catalyst was shifted by 0.3 eV in the spectrum of the doped catalyst; as a result, there was a 15.40 % increase in the number of surface oxygen vacancies of the NiZr/Ti3C2 catalyst. The synthesis of N‐doped TiO2 on Ti3C2 converted the moderately acidic sites of NiZr/Ti3C2 to strong Lewis acid sites and increased the total number of acid sites by approximately 0.8‐fold. The active Lewis acid sites on the surface of NiZr/N‐doped TiO2/Ti3C2 adsorbed only C=O bonds and inhibited the adsorption of C=C bonds, resulting in a high cinnamaldehyde conversion of 90.69 % and a cinnamyl alcohol selectivity of 91.87 %. The aim of this study was to prepare a solid self-microemulsifying drug delivery system (S-SMEDDS) of cinnamaldehyde (CA) by spray drying technique to improve the oral bioavailability of CA. The preparation of CA S-SMEDDS with maltodextrin as the solid carrier, a core-wall material mass ratio of 1:1, a solid content of 20% (w/v), an inlet air temperature of 150 °C, an injection speed of 5.2 mL/min, and an atomization pressure of 0.1 MPa was determined by using the encapsulation rate as the index of investigation. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) revealed the possibility of CA being encapsulated in S-SMEDDS in an amorphous form. The in-vitro release showed that the total amount of CA released by S-SMEDDS was approximately 1.3 times higher than that of the CA suspension. Pharmacokinetic results showed that the relative oral bioavailability of CA S-SMEDDS was also increased to 1.6-fold compared to CA suspension. Additionally, we explored the mechanism of CA uptake and transport of lipid-soluble drugs CA by S-SMEDDS in a Caco-2/HT29 cell co-culture system for the first time. The results showed that CA S-SMEDDS uptake on the co-culture model was mainly an energy-dependent endocytosis mechanism, including lattice protein-mediated endocytosis and vesicle-mediated endocytosis. Transport experiments showed that CA S-SMEDDS significantly increased the permeability of CA in this model. In this study, a Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst is fabricated by systematically manipulating and integrating g-C3N4 and ZnO. The Z-scheme g-C3N4(x)/ZnO(y) exhibits enhanced charge separation and migration, confirmed through photoluminescence (PL), time-correlated single-photon counting spectroscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Pd NPs, with an elevated work function and low Fermi energy level, are decorated onto the heterojunction, further amplifying charge separation, as revealed by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. The resulting Pd-decorated photocatalysts (Z%Pd@g-C3N4(x)/ZnO(y)) are evaluated for the selective reduction of α–β unsaturated compound, cinnamaldehyde. The catalysts with lower Pd NPs (0.5 or 1%) afford ∼100% yield for hydrocinnamaldehyde, while higher Pd NPs (3%Pd@g-C3N4(0.73)/ZnO(0.27)) afford ∼100% yield for hydrocinnamyl alcohol. Biomass-derived furanic aldehydes afforded ring-reduced and side-chain-reduced products under different Pd loading, whereas no ring-reduced products were obtained for the aromatic aldehydes. Interface interactions impact charge migration, leading to longer lifetimes for photogenerated charge pairs and improved separation of electrons and holes in photocatalytic processes. Characterizations and control experiments provide valuable insights into the structure–activity relationship, ultimately contributing to formulating a plausible reaction mechanism for photocatalytic reduction. Traditional Epoxies take hours to cure before their properties can be realized and this restricts its use in applications where quick turn‐around time is imperative. Herein, we developed fast curing Epoxies (which cure within 2 h) using Vitrimer chemistries. A unique dynamic curing agent (bio‐based Schiff motif) consisting of an aldehyde (here, cinnamaldehyde) and an amine (here, mussel inspired dopamine) is used to facilitate imine exchange during the curing process and maintains the network integrity‐ a key requirement to achieve excellent structural properties in epoxy based components. By incorporating this covalent adaptable network, various epoxies were designed which can cure within 2 h. The resulting epoxy vitrimers exhibited high tensile strength (68 MPa), exceptionally high Tg (128°C), fast stress relaxation (a relaxation time of 15.2 s at 180°C) and an activation energy of 105 kJ/mol. This associative covalent adaptable network (imine exchange) also rendered the epoxies re‐processable and re‐usable and offers closed‐loop circularity in plastics. The resulting epoxy also exhibited self‐healing property triggered by the exchangeable bonds. The self‐healing behavior of this epoxy was manifested from the surface conductivity measurements wherein the conducting pathway (facilitated by spraying conducting particles on the vitrimer epoxy substrate) was restored post self‐healing in substrates containing epoxy vitrimers. In addition, the epoxies cured using this Schiff based motif dissolves in a specific solvent and can be recovered and re‐purposed. The excellent mechanical properties achieved by retaining the network integrity together with the self‐healing properties offers myriad applications for the designed epoxy cured using bio‐based Schiff motif. To counter the harmful impacts of agricultural chemicals on the environment and human health, there is an increasing demand for safe, eco-friendly, and potent plant-based biopesticides. In this study, we aimed to investigate the antimicrobial effects of ginger essential oil and selected volatile compounds (linalool, eugenol, citral, and cinnamaldehyde [CA]) against Fusarium oxysporum FOX-1. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were determined using the mycelium growth inhibition method. The compound CA exhibited the most potent antifungal effect against F. oxysporum FOX-1 and was selected for further investigation. After treatment with CA at 1/2 MIC or MIC, the spore germination of F. oxysporum FOX-1 was significantly inhibited at 12 h. Furthermore, microscopic observation revealed that CA treatment resulted in the morphological degradation of F. oxysporum FOX-1. CA destroyed the cell membrane integrity of F. oxysporum FOX-1, increasing the relative conductivity and the leakage of intracellular protein, nucleic acids, and malondialdehyde, affecting the integrity and metabolism of the cell membrane. The effects were positively related to CA concentration. Additionally, in vivo experiments with rhizome sections showed that CA significantly reduced the pathogenicity of F. oxysporum FOX-1. Overall, these findings provide evidence for the potential of using ginger essential oil components as fungicides, offering a basis for future research to develop robust and eco-friendly plant-derived fungicides that serve as a sustainable means to reduce fungus-driven agricultural losses. Background: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis has a complex and inflammatory origin. Among the great variety of medications it is increasingly common to use herbal medicines due to the adverse side effects of chemical medications. Considering the anti-inflammatory properties of cinnamaldehyde and the lack of studies related to the effectiveness of its nano form; This study investigates the effect of cinnamaldehyde and nano cinnamaldehyde on the healing rate of recurrent aphthous stomatitis lesions. Methods: In a laboratory experiment, cinnamaldehyde was converted into niosomal nanoparticles. The niosome vesicles diameter and polydispersity index were measured at 25°C using a dynamic light scattering (DLS) Mastersizer 2000 (Malvern Panalytical technologies: UK) and Zetasizer Nano ZS system (Malvern Instruments Worcestershire: UK). After characterizing these particles, the (2,3-Bis-(2-Methoxy-4-Nitro-5-Sulfophenyl)-2H-Tetrazolium-5-Carboxanilide) [XTT] assay was used to assess the toxicity of cinnamaldehyde and nano cinnamaldehyde on gingival fibroblast (HGF) and macrophage (THP-1) cells. By determining the release of TNF-α, IL-6, and TGF-β cytokines using ELISA kits, the level of tissue repair and anti-inflammatory capabilities of these two substances were evaluated. Results: The size and loading rate of the cinnamaldehyde nanoparticles were established after its creation. The optimized nanovesicle exhibited the following characteristics: particle size of 228.75 ± 2.38 nm, PDI of 0.244 ± 0.01, the zeta potential of -10.87 ± 1.09 mV and the drug encapsulation percentage of 66.72 ± 3.93%. PDIs range was between 0.242–0.274. The zeta potential values at 25°C were from -2.67 to -12.9 mV. The results of the XTT test demonstrated that nano cinnamaldehyde exhibited dose-dependent toxicity effects. Moreover, nano cinnamaldehyde released more TGF-β and had better reparative effects when taken at lower concentrations than cinnamaldehyde. Conclusion: Nano cinnamaldehyde and cinnamaldehyde are effective in repairing tissue when used in non-toxic amounts. Cytokine storms are the cause of complications in patients with severe COVID‐19, and it becomes the target of therapy. Several natural compounds were selected to screen the inhibitory effect on T‐cell proliferation by Fluorescence‐Activated Cell Sorting (FACS) and cytokine production by enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Open reading frame 3a (ORF3a) of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) stimulates the specific T‐cell activation model in vivo and in vitro. The coculture system included the macrophage cell line RAW264.7 and splenocytes. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and glycolysis in T cells were evaluated. Cinnamaldehyde effectively inhibits cytokine storms both in vitro and in vivo. It decreased inflammatory cytokine (such as IFN‐γ, TNF‐α, IL‐6, and IL‐2) production by murine peripheral blood cells upon direct stimulation with ConA, after immunization with the MHV‐A59 virus or ORF3a peptide from SARS‐CoV‐2. Cinnamaldehyde restored the percentage of T cells, which was originally decreased in the peripheral blood and splenocytes of ORF3a‐immunized mice. In a coculture system, cinnamaldehyde reduced the secretion of inflammatory cytokines from macrophages in a T‐cell dependent manner. Furthermore, cinnamaldehyde decreased the ROS level in activated T cells, which in turn reduced glycolysis and the activation of T cells. Cinnamaldehyde is an excellent natural antioxidant with high antioxidant activity, but its function in food or human digestive tract under acidic conditions remains to be studied. The effects of cinnamaldehyde in the presence of lactic acid on oxidative stress of Caenorhabditis elegans and the underlying molecular mechanisms were investigated in the present study. Results showed that cinnamaldehyde with or without lactic acid exhibited good antioxidant ability, represented by high SOD and CAT activities in C. elegans, while lactic acid exerted no effect on the antioxidant enzymes. Trace elements, like Cu, Fe, or Se, are important for the activities of antioxidant enzymes. Data of metal elements analysis revealed that cinnamaldehyde made big differences on the levels of Mn, Cu, Se of worms compared with single lactic acid treatment. Moreover, mechanistic study suggested that in the presence of lactic acid, cinnamaldehyde could enhance the expressions of akt-2, age-1 to increase the antioxidant activities. In addition, we found that lactic acid was able to change the metabolic profile of cinnamaldehyde in C. elegans, characterized by nucleosides and amino acids, which were involved in the purine metabolism, the biosynthesis, and metabolism of some amino acids, etc. This study provides a theoretical basis for further revealing the functional activity and mechanism of cinnamaldehyde under acidic conditions. Abstract Background The recent pandemic outbursts, due to SARS-CoV-2, have highlighted once more the central role of the inflammatory process in the propagation of viral infection. The main consequence of COVID-19 is the induction of a diffuse pro-inflammatory state, also defined as a cytokine storm, which affects different organs, but mostly the lungs. We aimed to prove the efficacy of cinnamaldehyde, the active compound of cinnamon, as an anti-inflammatory compound, able to reduce SARS-CoV-2 induced cytokine storm. Results We enrolled 53 COVID-19 patients hospitalized for respiratory failure. The cohort was composed by 39 males and 13 females, aged 65.0 ± 9.8 years. We reported that COVID-19 patients have significantly higher IL-1β and IL-6 plasma levels compared to non-COVID-19 pneumonia patients. In addition, human mononuclear cells (PBMCs) isolated from SARS-CoV-2 infected patients are significantly more prone to release pro-inflammatory cytokines upon stimuli. We demonstrated, using in vitro cell models, that macrophages are responsible for mediating the pro-inflammatory cytokine storm while lung cells support SARS-CoV-2 replication upon viral infection. In this context, cinnamaldehyde administration significantly reduces SARS-CoV-2-related inflammation by inhibiting NLRP3 mediated IL-1β release in both PBMCs and THP-1 macrophages, as well as viral replication in CaLu-3 epithelial cells. Lastly, aerosol-administered cinnamaldehyde was able to significantly reduce IL-1β release in an in vivo lung-inflammatory model. Conclusion The obtained results suggest the possible use of cinnamaldehyde as a co-adjuvant preventive treatment for COVID-19 disease together with vaccination, but also as a promising dietary supplement to reduce, more broadly, viral induced inflammation.

Abstract Background Urinary tract infections represent one of the most frequent hospital and community-acquired infections with uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) being the main causative agent. The global increase in the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) UPEC necessitates exploring novel approaches. Repurposing natural products as anti-quorum sensing (QS) agents to impede bacterial virulence is gaining momentum nowadays. Hence, this study investigates the anti-QS potentials of carvacrol, cinnamaldehyde, and eugenol against E. coli isolated from urine cultures of Egyptian patients. Results Antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed for 67 E. coli isolates and 94% of the isolates showed MDR phenotype. The usp gene was detected using PCR and accordingly, 45% of the isolates were categorized as UPEC. Phytochemicals, at their sub-inhibitory concentrations, inhibited the swimming and twitching motilities of UPEC isolates, with eugenol showing the highest inhibitory effect. The agents hindered the biofilm-forming ability of the tested isolates, at two temperature sets, 37 and 30 °C, where eugenol succeeded in significantly inhibiting the biofilm formation by > 50% at both investigated temperatures, as compared with untreated controls. The phytochemicals were shown to downregulate the expression of the QS gene (luxS) and critical genes related to motility, asserting their anti-QS potential. Further, the combinatory activity of the phytoproducts with five antibiotics was assessed by checkerboard assay. The addition of the phytoproducts significantly reduced the minimum inhibitory concentrations of the antibiotics and generated several synergistic or partially synergistic combinations, some of which have not been previously explored. Conclusions Overall, carvacrol, cinnamaldehyde, and eugenol could be repurposed as potential anti-QS agents, which preferentially reduce the QS-based communication and attenuate the cascades of gene expression, thus decreasing the production of virulence factors in UPEC, and eventually, subsiding their pathogenicity. Furthermore, the synergistic combinations of these agents with antibiotics might provide a new perspective to circumvent the side effects brought about by high antibiotic doses, thereby paving the way for overcoming antibiotic resistance.

Flavored e-liquid use has become popular among e-cigarette users recently, but the effects of such products outside the lung are not well characterized. In this work, acute exposure to the popular flavoring cinnamaldehyde (CIN) was performed on human proximal tubule (HK-2) kidney cells. Cells were exposed to 0–100 µM CIN for 24–48 h and cellular stress responses were assessed. Mitochondrial viability via MTT assay was significantly decreased at 20 µM for 24 and 48 h exposure. Seahorse XFp analysis showed significantly decreased mitochondrial energy output at 20 µM by 24 h exposure, in addition to significantly reduced ATP Synthase expression. Seahorse analysis also revealed significantly decreased glycolytic function at 20 µM by 24 h exposure, suggesting inability of glycolytic processes to compensate for reduced mitochondrial energy output. Cleaved caspase-3 expression, a mediator of apoptosis, was significantly increased at the 24 h mark. C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP) expression, a mediator of ER-induced apoptosis, was induced by 48 h and subsequently lost at the highest concentration of 100 µM. This decrease was accompanied by a simultaneous decrease in its downstream target cleaved caspase-3 at the 48 h mark. The autophagy marker microtubule-associated protein 1 A/1B light chain 3 (LC3B-I and LC3B-II) expression was significantly increased at 100 µM by 24 h. Autophagy-related 7 (ATG7) protein and mitophagy-related proteins PTEN-induced putative kinase 1 (PINK1) and PARKIN expression were significantly reduced at 24 and 48 h exposure. These results indicate acute exposure to CIN in the kidney HK-2 model induces mitochondrial dysfunction and cellular stress responses.

ABSTRACT: This study was to determine the effects of the mixture of glycerol monolaurate and cinnamaldehyde (GCM) supplementation on the intestinal morphology, immunity, antioxidant status and cecal microbiota of laying hens. A total of 1,120 healthy laying hens (Jingfen-1 strain) at the age of 14 wk were randomly divided into 4 groups with 10 replicates of 28 layers in each and layers were fed diets containing 0 (control group), or 250, 500, and 1,000 mg/kg GCM for 12 wk. The results showed that dietary supplementation with GCM significantly increased intestinal villus height and villus height/crypt depth, duodenal villus area, total superoxide disumutase activities in the liver and jejunum, jejunal glutathione peroxidase activities while decreased duodenal and jejunal crypt depth, hydrogen peroxide content in the liver and jejunal malondialdehyde content of laying hens aging 28 wk (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, GCM addition significantly increased serum immunoglobulin A and immunoglobulin M concentration of layers at the age of 20, 24, and 28 wk (P < 0.05). Moreover, it was observed in the 16S rRNA sequencing that the addition of GCM elevated the abundance and diversity of gut microbiota in laying hens. The predominant bacteria from each group were Bacteroidota and Firmicutes at the phylum level and Bacteroides and Lactobacillus were the dominant genera. The composition and structure of cecal microflora were changed by the addition of GCM to the diet of laying hens. In conclusion, the addition of GCM (500–1,000 mg/kg diet) can improve intestinal morphology, immune function, intestinal and liver antioxidant status and intestinal flora of laying hens, thereby improving intestinal digestion and absorption capacity. These findings provide a new way to further explore the mechanism of GCM improving intestinal health.

Bacterial resistance to antibiotics poses a significant global challenge for the public sector. Globally, researchers are actively investigating solutions to tackle the issue of bacterial resistance to antibiotics, with Schiff bases standing out as promising contenders in the fight against antimicrobial resistance. This study focused on synthesizing a series of Schiff bases (CA1-CA10) by reacting cinnamaldehyde with various aniline derivatives. Various analytical techniques, such as NMR, FTIR, UV–Vis, elemental analysis, and mass spectrometry, were employed to elucidate the structures of the synthesized compounds. Furthermore, crystal structure of CA8 was obtained using single crystal X-ray spectroscopy. The compounds were subjected to in vitro testing to assess their antibacterial and antifungal properties against eleven bacterial strains and four fungal strains. The results revealed diverse activity levels against the pathogens at varying concentrations, with notable potency observed in compounds CA3, CA4, CA9, and CA10, as indicated by their minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) values. The observed activity of the compounds seemed to be influenced by the specific substituents attached to their molecular structure. By conducting computational and molecular docking studies, the electronic properties of the compounds were investigated, further substantiating their potential as effective antimicrobial agents.

Purpose: This study aims to preserve the volatile components of Linggui Zhugan (LGZG) decoction, offering an experimental foundation for subsequent preparations efforts. Methods: Two modern sample preparation processes were compared with the traditional method approach using HPLC fingerprints. After identifying the main volatile components in LGZG aqueous decoction, the inclusion method of inclusion compounds (IC-LGZG) was established and optimized at laboratory, pilot and production scales. Characterization, stability testing of IC-LGZG, and experiments on gastric ulcer rats were conducted to validate the transferability of chemical composition and pharmaceutical efficacy. Results: The study focused on preserving the volatile components in LGZG modern preparations. HPLC analysis revealed cinnamaldehyde (CA) as the main volatile component in LGZG decoction. The optimized IC-LGZG preparation involved heating aromatic water to 40 °C, adding 20 g/L of β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD), keeping warm and stirring at 300 r for 30 min. This process exhibited good repeatability across different verification tests at varying scales. IC-LGZG obtained effectively transferred CA molecules into the β-CD molecules via encapsulation, remaining stable when stored in sealed and dark conditions. Finally, CA, IC-LGZG and M−LGZG (a mixture of IC-LGZG and water-soluble extract powder) effectively prevented the formation of gastric ulcer by mitigating reductions in IL-10, SOD and the increase of TNF-α, NO, MDA in serum. Conclusion: The IC-LGZG prepared using this process successfully transfers volatile components, both chemically and pharmacologically, making it suitable for modern preparations of LGZG.

Weaning is one of the most critical phases in pig’s life, often leading to postweaning diarrhoea (PWD). Zinc oxide (ZnO), at pharmacological doses, has been largely used to prevent PWD; however, due to antimicrobial co-resistant and environmental pollution issues, the EU banned its use in June 2022. Natural or natural identical components of essential oils and their mixture with organic acids are possible alternatives studied for their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant abilities. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of two blends of natural or natural identical components of essential oils and organic acids compared to ZnO on health, performance, and gut health of weaned pigs. At weaning (d0), 96 piglets (7 058 ± 895 g) were assigned to one of four treatments balanced for BW and litter: CO (control treatment), ZnO (2 400 mg/kg ZnO from d0 to d14); Blend1 (cinnamaldehyde, ajowan and clove essential oils, 1 500 mg/kg feed); Blend2 (cinnamaldehyde, eugenol and short- and medium-chain fatty acids, 2 000 mg/kg feed). Pigs were weighed weekly until d35. Faeces were collected at d13 and d35 for microbiota (v3–v4 regions of the 16 s rRNA gene) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) count analysis. At d14 and d35, eight pigs/treatment were slaughtered; pH was recorded on intestinal contents and jejunal samples were collected for morphological and gene expression analysis. Coughs and allergies are often treated at home with cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum). COVID-19 patients were also benefited by the herb. Aspirating C. verum powder caused pulmonary toxicity, hypercapnia, and respiratory failure in humans and animals. The toxicity of C. verum during fetal lung development is generally unknown. C. verum's effects on lung development were studied in zebrafish. Zebrafish lack lungs but have a swim bladder that functions like mammalian lungs. This study examined C. verum's role in embryonic lung formation using zebrafish swim bladder development. C. verum bark was extracted in methanol, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and hexane. Zebrafish embryos received serial dilutions of these extracts. Methanol extracts of C. verum were not harmful, while hexane, chloroform, and ethyl acetate extracts prevented swim bladder formation and caused neurotoxicity in zebrafish embryos. Organogenesis and lung tumorigenesis share biology. The anti-cancer effect of C. verum against lung cancer is unclear, hence an invitro cell viability study was performed utilizing three human lung cancer cell lines. All extracts decreased lung cancer cell viability, but hexane extract was most effective, inhibiting growth at IC 50 concentrations below 50 µg/ml. The LD50 dose of hexane extract in zebrafish embryonic toxicity exceeds 100 µg/ml, indicating more activity in cancer than normal cells. The extracts also exhibited significant level of ameliorative activity against CuSO4 induced oxidative stress in live zebrafish larvae. Hexane, ethyl acetate, and chloroform fractions have high cinnamaldehyde levels according to GC–MS analyses. Thus, cinnamaldehyde may be the key element in C. verum's lung toxicity and anticancer properties. This study suggested that C. verum crude extract or pure cinnamaldehyde could treat lung cancer. The dose in pregnant women must be carefully monitored to avoid teratogenic effects on fetus lung development.
