Abstract In just over a decade, certified single-junction perovskite solar cells (PSCs) boast an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 26.1%. Such outstanding performance makes it highly viable for further development. Here, we have meticulously outlined challenges that arose during the industrialization of PSCs and proposed their corresponding solutions based on extensive research. We discussed the main challenges in this field including technological limitations, multi-scenario applications, sustainable development, etc. Mature photovoltaic solutions provide the perovskite community with invaluable insights for overcoming the challenges of industrialization. In the upcoming stages of PSCs advancement, it has become evident that addressing the challenges concerning long-term stability and sustainability is paramount. In this manner, we can facilitate a more effective integration of PSCs into our daily lives.

Abstract Background Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a life-threatening chronic cardiopulmonary disease. However, there is a paucity of studies that reflect the available biomarkers from separate gene expression profiles in PAH. Methods The GSE131793 and GSE113439 datasets were combined for subsequent analyses, and batch effects were removed. Bioinformatic analysis was then performed to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) and a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis were then used to further filter the hub genes. Functional enrichment analysis of the intersection genes was performed using Gene Ontology (GO), Disease Ontology (DO), Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) and gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA). The expression level and diagnostic value of hub gene expression in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) patients were also analyzed in the validation datasets GSE53408 and GSE22356. In addition, target gene expression was validated in the lungs of a monocrotaline (MCT)-induced pulmonary hypertension (PH) rat model and in the serum of PAH patients. Results A total of 914 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, with 722 upregulated and 192 downregulated genes. The key module relevant to PAH was selected using WGCNA. By combining the DEGs and the key module of WGCNA, 807 genes were selected. Furthermore, protein–protein interaction (PPI) network analysis identified HSP90AA1, CD8A, HIF1A, CXCL8, EPRS1, POLR2B, TFRC, and PTGS2 as hub genes. The GSE53408 and GSE22356 datasets were used to evaluate the expression of TFRC, which also showed robust diagnostic value. According to GSEA enrichment analysis, PAH-relevant biological functions and pathways were enriched in patients with high TFRC levels. Furthermore, TFRC expression was found to be upregulated in the lung tissues of our experimental PH rat model compared to those of the controls, and the same conclusion was reached in the serum of the PAH patients. Conclusions According to our bioinformatics analysis, the observed increase of TFRC in the lung tissue of human PAH patients, as indicated by transcriptomic data, is consistent with the alterations observed in PAH patients and rodent models. These data suggest that TFRC may serve as a potential biomarker for PAH.

Abstract Background Patients with extensive‐stage small cell lung cancer (ES‐SCLC) have an exceptionally poor prognosis and immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) combined with etoposide‐platinum is recommended as standard first‐line therapy. However, which combination pattern is the best still remains unknown. This network meta‐analysis was performed to compare the efficacy and safety of currently available patterns including an antiangiogenic agent containing regimen and probed into the most appropriate therapy for patients. Methods Hazard ratios (HRs) and odds ratios (ORs) were generated using R software. The outcomes of overall survival (OS), progression‐free survival (PFS), objective response rate (ORR), and adverse events of grade 3 or higher (grade ≥ 3 adverse events [AEs]) were analyzed. Results A total of 10 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 5544 patients were included for analysis. Drug combination patterns included adebrelimab, atezolizumab, durvalumab, durvalumab plus tremelimumab, ipilimumab, pembrolizumab, serplulimab, benmelstobart plus anlotinib, tislelizumab, tiragolumab plus atezolizumab and toripalimab in combination with chemotherapy. The novel antiangiogenic agent containing regimen benmelstobart + anlotinib + chemotherapy showed the highest possibility to present the best PFS and OS versus chemotherapy. Compared with ICI plus chemotherapy, it also achieved significantly better PFS and presented a tendency of OS benefit. As for safety and toxicity, patients treated with benmelstobart + anlotinib + chemotherapy and durvalumab + tremelimumab + chemotherapy suffered a higher likelihood of more grade ≥ 3 AEs without unexpected AEs. Conclusion PD‐1/PD‐L1 inhibitors‐based combinations are associated with significant improvement in both PFS and OS for treatment‐naïve ES‐SCLC patients. Benmelstobart plus anlotinib with chemotherapy (CT) yielded better survival benefit versus CT alone or other ICIs + CT with caution for more adverse effects along with the addition of an antiangiogenic agent.

Abstract Objective Although some studies have linked smoking to mortality after out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCAs), data regarding smoking and mortality after OHCAs have not yet been discussed in a meta-analysis. Thus, this study conducted this systematic review to clarify the association. Methods The study searched Medline-PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and Cochrane libraries between January 1972 and July 2022 for studies that evaluated the association between smoking and mortality after OHCAs. Studies that reportedly showed relative risk estimates with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were included. BackgroundNon-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) ranks among the most prevalent and lethal malignancies globally. Fatty acids (FAs) play a significant role in diverse physiological and pathological mechanisms, yet their precise involvement in NSCLC remains poorly understood.MethodsThis study utilized a large-scale prospective cohort of 249,132 participants, observed over an average of 12 years, to investigate the relationship between different FAs and NSCLC risk. Analytical approaches included Cox proportional hazards regression, Kaplan–Meier survival analysis, accelerated failure time (AFT) modeling, and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis.ResultsDuring the follow-up period, 1,460 participants were diagnosed with NSCLC. Cox regression analysis demonstrated that elevated levels of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), linoleic acid (LA), and omega-3 were inversely associated with NSCLC risk. Kaplan–Meier curves, along with AFT models, corroborated that elevated concentrations of DHA and LA significantly delayed NSCLC onset. Additionally, RCS analysis uncovered nuanced dose–response relationships between these FAs and NSCLC. Stratified analyses highlighted variability based on smoking status, gender, and body mass index subgroups.ConclusionThe concentration of specific FAs exhibits a significant association with NSCLC risk. These results offer a foundation for devising dietary FA composition adjustments aimed at reducing NSCLC risk.

BackgroundAumolertinib demonstrated superior progression-free survival (PFS) and a well-tolerated toxicity profile compared to gefitinib in front-line treatment of locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in the AENEAS trial. However, patient-reported outcomes (PROs) of aumolertinib have not been published.MethodsIn this real-world study, the efficacy was evaluated by Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) 1.0. PROs were evaluated using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire C30 (QLQ-C30) and the EORTC Quality of Life lung cancer-specific module (QLQ-LC13) in advanced NSCLC patients receiving aumolertinib as initial therapy. Pre-specified key symptoms were cough, hemoptysis, dyspnea, sore mouth or tongue, dysphagia, hair loss, tingling in hands or feet, chest pain, arm or shoulder pain, and pain at other sites.ResultsA total of 33 patients were included, 23 of whom had efficacy information up to January 2024. The median follow-up time was 264 days (interval: 36–491 days). The objective response rate and disease control rate were 65.2% and 91.3%, respectively. The EORTC QLQ-LC30 general health status scale showed that functional scales increased and symptom scales decreased during aumolertinib treatment. Symptom scales assessed by the EORTC QLQ-LC13 showed that improvements in cough, sore mouth or tongue, tingling in hands or feet, chest pain, arm or shoulder pain, and other pain sites were both clinically and statistically significant after 6 months of aumolertinib treatment (p < 0.05).ConclusionIn this real-world study, aumolertinib showed comparable disease control and objective response rates as reported in the AENEAS trial for advanced NSCLC patients with EGFR-sensitizing mutations. Aumolertinib treatment improved PROs, further supporting it in first-line clinical practice.

Background Endovascular treatment (EVT) has been demonstrated to be effective for patients with tandem occlusion. The efficacy and safety of intravenous thrombolysis before EVT in patients with tandem occlusion remain debatable. Methods and Results We conducted a systematic review and meta‐analysis with PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library from inception to September 2023. The primary outcome was functional independence, defined as a modified Rankin Scale score of 0 to 2 at 90 days. The secondary outcomes included the successful recanalization rate, symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage, and mortality at 90 days. In total, 9 studies with 1838 enrolled participants were identified. Our results showed that, compared with treatment with EVT alone, intravenous thrombolysis before EVT was associated with a greater proportion of functional independence at 90 days (odds ratio [OR], 1.39 [95% CI, 1.14–1.69]; P=0.001), a greater rate of successful recanalization (OR, 1.45 [95% CI, 1.11–1.89]; P=0.007) and decreased mortality (OR, 0.68 [95% CI, 0.50–0.93]; P=0.02). Furthermore, there was no significant difference in symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage between the intravenous thrombolysis plus EVT group and the EVT alone group (OR, 1.16 [95% CI, 0.79–1.70]; P=0.45). Conclusions In patients with acute ischemic stroke and tandem occlusion, intravenous thrombolysis before EVT was associated with a greater rate of favorable functional outcomes and successful recanalization and a lower mortality rate without an increased risk of symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage compared with patients receiving EVT alone.

The field data acquisition of transient electromagnetic method is prone to jump due to various random disturbances. Wavelet denoising realizes data denoising by multi-scale decomposition, threshold setting and reconstruction of signal. In order to improve the data quality of TEM after wavelet denoising, a new wavelet denoising method based on the optimal threshold reference is proposed to improve the threshold selection method. Combined with the application of transient electromagnetic method in water-rich engineering, the noise reduction results of data under different threshold conditions are compared and analyzed, and the practical application effect of the proposed algorithm is discussed. The results show that the proposed method can further reduce the value of the induced electromotive force curve in the range of 1-4 ms, and make the whole period attenuation characteristics of the data more obvious. The smoke ring inversion results of the denoised data were analyzed, and three locations with relatively large electrical differences were explained, and the inversion results of the denoised data based on the optimal threshold reference were verified to be more accurate.

BackgroundIn China, people’s perceptions towards electronic cigarettes during Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic compared with pre-pandemic conditions have not been explored. Exploring the perceptions of medical workers regarding e-cigarettes is crucial, as they serve as a trusted source of information and providers of smoking cessation counselling for smokers. This cross-sectional study was designed to explore the awareness and perceptions of e-cigarettes among Chinese medical and other groups in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.MethodsA cross-sectional survey was performed using an online, anonymous, and self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire contained sections for collecting participants’ general information and Likert scale questions regarding smoking status, perceptions of e-smoking, attitude, and willingness to use e-cigarettes. The respondents included medical students, clinical doctors, and other occupations. Data analysis was performed using tools such as descriptive analysis, binary logistic regression, and multivariate regression.ResultsA total of 952 people completed the questionnaire, and 96.54% of them reported to have heard about e-cigarettes. The most common source of information about e-cigarettes was advertising. Notably, 28 of the 116 smokers reported that they had used e-cigarettes. Independent-samples T-tests results showed that medical groups believed e-cigarettes contained tar (p = 0.03). Most of the medical and non-medical participants maintained neutral attitudes towards e-cigarette policies (38.3%) and prices (49.2%) but their views were significantly different (p 40, OR = 9.794, 95CI% = 1.683–56.989, p = 0.011) and the older adult used fewer than the young (18–40, OR = 4.797, 95CI% = 0.930–24.744, p = 0.061; > 40, OR = 9.794, 95CI% = 1.683–56.989, p = 0.011).ConclusionThis study found that individuals tend to hold negative attitudes towards the awareness, perceptions, and willingness to use e-cigarettes. Medical groups are less likely to use e-cigarettes, but misperceptions are still prevalent among them. This calls for additional training for such medical personnel to improve their capacity to provide necessary counselling to smokers. E-cigarettes advertisements were the main source of information for young individuals to learn about e-cigarettes, and hence measures should be taken to restrict exposure of young individuals to e-cigarettes.

Sepsis is a leading cause of mortality among severely ill individuals, primarily due to its potential to induce fatal organ dysfunction. For clinicians, it is vital to have appropriate indicators, including the physiological status and personal experiences of patients with sepsis, to monitor the condition and assess prognosis. This approach aids in preventing the worsening of the illness and reduces mortality. Recent guidelines for sepsis focus on improving patient outcomes through early detection and timely treatment. Nonetheless, identifying severe cases and predicting their prognoses remain challenging. In recent years, there has been considerable interest in utilising the C-reactive protein (CRP)/albumin ratio (CAR) to evaluate the condition and forecast the prognosis of patients with sepsis. This research concentrates on the significance of CAR in the pathological process of sepsis, its association with prognosis, and the latest developments in employing procalcitonin, lactic acid, CRP, and other potential biomarkers. The CAR, with its predictive value for sepsis prognosis and mortality, is increasingly used as a clinical biochemical marker in diagnosing and monitoring patients with sepsis.

Abstract Male breast cancer (MBC) is a rare but aggressive malignancy with cellular and immunological characteristics that remain unclear. Here, we perform transcriptomic analysis for 111,038 single cells from tumor tissues of six MBC and thirteen female breast cancer (FBC) patients. We find that that MBC has significantly lower infiltration of T cells relative to FBC. Metastasis-related programs are more active in cancer cells from MBC. The activated fatty acid metabolism involved with FASN is related to cancer cell metastasis and low immune infiltration of MBC. T cells in MBC show activation of p38 MAPK and lipid oxidation pathways, indicating a dysfunctional state. In contrast, T cells in FBC exhibit higher expression of cytotoxic markers and immune activation pathways mediated by immune-modulatory cytokines. Moreover, we identify the inhibitory interactions between cancer cells and T cells in MBC. Our study provides important information for understanding the tumor immunology and metabolism of MBC.

A typical magnetometer-based measurement-while-drilling (MWD) system determines the azimuth of the bottom hole assembly during the drilling process by employing triaxial accelerometers and magnetometers. The geomagnetic azimuth solution is susceptible to magnetic interference, especially strong magnetic interference and so a rotary norm constraint filtering (RNCF) method for azimuth estimation, designed to support a gyroscope-aided magnetometer-based MWD system, is proposed. First, a new magnetic dynamical system, one whose output is observed by the magnetometers triad, is designed based on the Coriolis equation of the desired geomagnetic vector. Second, given that the norm of the non-interfered geomagnetic vector can be approximated as a constant during a short-term drilling process, a norm constraint procedure is introduced to the Kalman filter. This is achieved by the normalization of the geomagnetic part of the state vector of the dynamical system and is undertaken in order to obtain a precise geomagnetic component. Simulation and actual drilling experiments show that the proposed RNCF method can effectively improve the azimuth measurement precision with 98.5% over the typical geomagnetic solution and 37.1% over the KF in a RMSE sense when being strong magnetic interference environment.

The concept of sepsis has recently evolved from one of a ‘systemic inflammatory response syndrome caused by infection’ to a ‘severe, potentially fatal organic dysfunction caused by an inadequate or imbalanced host response to infection’. Organ dysfunction is closely related to sepsis. Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) is the most serious outcome of sepsis, often leading to a poor prognosis. However, specific drugs for sepsis and MODS caused by sepsis remain undetermined, and the fatality rate is relatively high. Under the guidance of modern medicine, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has gained a wealth of experience in the prevention and treatment of sepsis and plays a key role via the effects of its numerous components, pathways and targets. This study used ‘Sepsis’, ‘Organ dysfunction’ and ‘Traditional Chinese medicine’ as strategies for searching the databases of Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, PubMed and The Web of Science. This paper presents an overview of the current status of TCM component formulations for preventing and treating sepsis with MODS to provide a theoretical basis for clinical treatment and drug development.

BackgroundAurora kinase A (AURKA) plays a pivotal role in regulating cell mitosis and tumor progression. However, its prognostic significance across diverse cancer types remains relatively unexplored.MethodsWe conducted a comprehensive analysis of AURKA expression in various cancers using data from The Cancer Genome Atlas, Genotype-Tissue Expression, and The Human Protein Atlas databases. Our investigation encompassed an exploration of the associations between AURKA expression and clinical characteristics, shedding light on potential functional roles of AURKA. Additionally, we delved into the relationship between AURKA and the tumor microenvironment. To substantiate the role of AURKA, we carried out in vitro experiments in esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC), prostate cancer (PRAD), and pancreatic cancer (PAAD) cells.ResultsOur analysis revealed that AURKA is prominently overexpressed in a majority of the cancer types under investigation. Elevated AURKA expression correlated closely with poorer prognosis and advanced tumor stages. AURKA was found to be associated with key pathways involved in the cell cycle and arachidonic acid metabolism. Moreover, AURKA expression exhibited significant correlations with immunoregulatory genes and immune cell profiles. Notably, in vitro experiments demonstrated that silencing AURKA expression resulted in reduced cell viability in EAC, PRAD, and PAAD cells, as well as a decrease in clone formation, cell cycle elongation, diminished cell invasion and reduced spheroid size in EAC cells (OE33 and OE19).ConclusionOur study elucidates the oncogenic role of AURKA and underscores its prognostic value across a spectrum of cancers, including EAC. These findings suggest that AURKA holds promise as a predictive biomarker for EAC and various other tumor types.

Abstract Background Estimated pulse wave velocity (ePWV) has revealed excellent performance in predicting cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. However, whether ePWV predicts all-cause mortality and CVD mortality in populations with obesity remains elusive. Methods We performed a prospective cohort including 49,116 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2005 to 2014. Arterial stiffness was evaluated by ePWV. Weighted univariate, multivariate Cox regression and receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis was used to assess the effects of ePWV on the risk of all-cause and CVD mortality. In addition, the two-piecewise linear regression analysis was used to describe the trend of ePWV affecting mortality and identify the thresholds that significantly affect mortality. Results A total of 9929 participants with obesity with ePWV data and 833 deaths were enrolled. Based on the multivariate Cox regression results, the high ePWV group had a 1.25-fold higher risk of all-cause mortality and a 5.76-fold higher risk of CVD mortality than the low-ePWV group. All-cause and CVD mortality risk increased by 123% and 44%, respectively, for every 1 m/s increase in ePWV. ROC results showed that ePWV had an excellent accuracy in predicting all-cause mortality (AUC = 0.801) and CVD mortality (AUC = 0.806). Furthermore, the two-piecewise linear regression analysis exhibited that the minimal threshold at which ePWV affected participant mortality was 6.7 m/s for all-cause mortality and 7.2 m/s for CVD mortality. Conclusions ePWV was an independent risk factor for mortality in populations with obesity. High ePWV levels were associated with an increased all-cause and CVD mortality. Thus, ePWV can be considered a novel biomarker to assess mortality risk in patients with obesity.

The freezing winter temperatures in Northeast China hinder the breakdown speed of straw, making it challenging to implement widespread straw return in rice fields, meaning that crop remnants are not efficiently utilised. This study involved a pot experiment conducted on rice plants that were treated with varying quantities of biochar: CK (no biochar); BC1 (5 t ha−1); BC2 (10 t ha−1); and BC3 (20 t ha−1). An investigation was conducted to examine the impact of biochar on the soil organic carbon (SOC), humus (HS) composition, humic acid (HA) structure, and rice yield of paddy fields. The findings demonstrated that the use of biochar led to a substantial rise in SOC and HA-C concentrations in the soil layer between 20 and 40 cm. Additionally, biochar’s application enhanced soil humification. Notably, the treatment with BC3 (20 t ha−1) had the most pronounced impact. The O/C ratio in the HA and the relative strength of the peaks at 1620 cm−1 on the infrared spectra showed a more pronounced response to the BC3 treatment compared to the other biochar treatments. However, the application of the BC1 treatment at a rate of 5 t ha−1 and the BC2 treatment at a rate of 10 t ha−1 had a minimal impact on the fluorescence intensity of humic acid (HA). The application of the BC3 treatment increased the aromatic nature of the humic acid (HA) in paddy soil, leading to the formation of an intricate and enduring HA structure. Furthermore, the use of the BC3 treatment resulted in a notable enhancement in the quantity of spikes, spike weight, and number of grains per spike. Additionally, it positively impacted the accumulation of dry matter in the spike, leading to a substantial 13.7% increase in the rice yield. Applying biochar at a rate of 20 t ha−1 is a sensible and effective approach to enhance the soil organic carbon (SOC) content, enhance the stability of the humic acid (HA)’s structure, and raise the rice yield in the rice-growing area of Northeast China. This study’s findings will establish a theoretical foundation for utilising soil biochar in the rice fields located in Northeast China.

Background: Cuproptosis, as a recently discovered type of programmed cell death, occupies a very important role in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and provides new methods for immunotherapy; however, the functions of cuproptosis in HCC are still unclear.Methods: We first analyzed the transcriptome data and clinical information of 526 HCC patients using multiple algorithms in R language and extensively described the copy number variation, prognostic and immune infiltration characteristics of cuproptosis related genes (CRGs). Then, the hub CRG related genes associated with prognosis through LASSO and Cox regression analyses and constructed a prognostic prediction model including multiple molecular markers and clinicopathological parameters through training cohorts, then this model was verified by test cohorts. On the basis of the model, the clinicopathological indicators, immune infiltration and tumor microenvironment characteristics of HCC patients were further explored via bioinformation analysis. Then, We further explored the key gene biological function by single-cell analysis, cell viability and transwell experiments. Meantime, we also explored the molecular docking of the hub genes.Results: We have screened 5 hub genes associated with HCC prognosis and constructed a prognosis prediction scoring model. And the model results showed that patients in the high-risk group had poor prognosis and the expression levels of multiple immune markers, including PD-L1, CD276 and CTLA4, were higher than those patients in the low-risk group. We found a significant correlation between risk score and M0 macrophages and memory CD4+ T cells. And the single-cell analysis and molecular experiments showed that BEX1 were higher expressed in HCC tissues and deletion inhibited the proliferation, invasion and migration and EMT pathway of HCC cells. Finally, it was observed that BEX1 could bind to sorafenib to form a stable conformation.Conclusion: The study not only revealed the multiomics characteristics of CRGs in HCC but also constructed a new high-accuracy prognostic prediction model. Meanwhile, BEX1 were also identified as hub genes that can mediate the cuproptosis of hepatocytes as potential therapeutic targets for HCC.

Introduction Hip fracture is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality, especially among the elderly. Current evidence on the association between cigarette smoking and mortality in hip-fracture patients is controversial. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies on this association. Methods The databases Medline/PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were searched for studies that estimated the effect of smoking on the risk of mortality in hip-fracture patients. Pooled analyses were conducted of the associations, expressed in relative risk (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Heterogeneity was assessed using the I 2 statistic. Study quality was assessed by the modified Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) and publication bias was evaluated by a funnel plot, Begg’s and Egger’s tests. Subgroup analyses were performed by study design, race/ethnicity, age ≥60 years, smoking status, and follow-up period. Results A total of six articles involving 3739 hip-fracture patients were included in the meta-analysis. Our results indicate that ever-active smoking was significantly associated with an increased risk of death in hip-fracture patients (pooled RR=1.26; 95% CI: 1.08–1.46). In further subgroup analysis, the risk of death was significantly higher in ever-active smokers than in never smokers in White participants (pooled RR=1.23; 95% CI: 1.05–1.44) and elderly aged ≥60 years (pooled RR=1.19; 95% CI: 1.01–1.40), with no significant association in Asian participants (pooled RR=1.42; 95% CI: 0.95–2.11). Current smokers had more risk of death than never smokers (pooled RR=1.26; 95% CI: 1.08–1.46). The association was significant in follow-up periods of ≤1 year (pooled hazard ratio, HR=1.34; 95% CI: 1.05–1.71), 3 years (pooled HR=1.22; 95% CI: 1.05–1.43), and 5 years (pooled HR=1.26; 95% CI: 1.08–1.46). Conclusions Cigarette smoking is associated with an increased risk of mortality in hip-fracture patients, especially in elderly patients aged ≥60 years, current smokers, and White participants. With the extension of follow-up period, the effect on mortality of smoking is profound and lasting.

Introduction Although some research papers have suggested that smoking may increase mortality in patients with sepsis, no evidence has been produced in this regard. This systematic research evaluated the risk of death in patients with sepsis who were smokers to facilitate better clinical decision making. Material and Methods This is a systematic review registered in PROPERO (CRD42022296654). Searches were conducted to identify suitable studies from the databases of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and the Cochrane Controlled Register of Trials from January 1980 to June 2021. Two independent reviewers screened the articles using keywords and extracted the data. The Newcastle–Ottawa Scale (NOS) was used to evaluate the quality of evidence. The primary endpoints included the mortality of patients with sepsis. Results Five studies involving 2694 participants were included in our study. Among the five included articles, three studies had an NOS score of 6, while the other two had an NOS score of 7. The results showed that a significantly higher risk of death was observed in smokers with sepsis compared with non-smokers with sepsis (hazard ratio, HR=1.62; 95% CI: 1.11–2.37, p=0.01). Abstract Background Breast cancer is notorious for its increasing incidence for decades. Ascending evidence has demonstrated that translocase of inner mitochondrial membrane (TIMM) proteins play vital roles in progression of several types of human cancer. However, the biological behaviors and molecular mechanisms of TIMM8A in breast cancer remain not fully illustrated. Methods Pan-cancer analysis was firstly performed for TIMM8A’s expression and prognosis by Oncomine database. Subsequently, TIMM8A-related noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) were identified by a series of bioinformatics analyses and dual-luciferase reporter assay, including expression analysis, correlation analysis, and survival analysis. Moreover, the effect of TIMM8A on breast cancer proliferation and apoptosis was evaluated in vitro by CCK-8 assays, EdU cell proliferation assays, JC-1 mitochondrial membrane potential detection assays and Western blot assays and the in vivo effect was revealed through a patient-derived xenograft mouse model. Results We found that TIMM8A showed higher expression level in breast cancer and the higher TIMM8A mRNA expression group had a poorer prognosis than the lower TIMM8A group. hsa-circ-0107314/hsa-circ-0021867/hsa-circ-0122013 might be the three most potential upstream circRNAs of hsa-miR-34c-5p/hsa-miR-449a-TIMM8A axis in breast cancer. TIMM8A promotes proliferation of breast cancer cells in vitro and tumor growth in vivo. Conclusion Our results confirmed that ncRNAs-mediated upregulation of TIMM8A correlated with poor prognosis and act as an oncogene in breast cancer.

The working principle of the jaw type electromagnetic clutch is introduced， then the dynamic engagement process of the end face teeth is analyzed in detail. The engagement of the end face teeth with different speed difference is explored. Through theoretical calculation， the maximum speed difference of the clutch could engage is obtained. Through Adams virtual prototype simulation method， the influence of different speed difference on clutch engagement time and impact force is obtained. Simultaneously， the maximum speed difference of clutch smoothly engaging and the result of theoretical calculation are verified. The research provides a reference for the practical application and design improvement of the jaw type electromagnetic clutch.

The continuous input, slow decomposition, and retention of straw can impede tillage and crop growth, and the decomposition process of the straw in soil is affected by its composition and the method of application. Experimental Station of Jilin Agricultural University, Changchun City, Jilin Province. The soil type was Argiudolls, the experimental field area was 30 m2, and the maize was planted continuously for 12 years without returning the straw to the field. There were four treatments: (1) control (CK), 10 g of straw was placed on the surface of a nylon mesh bag, and the nylon mesh bag was separated from the soil by polyethylene film without contacting with the soil; (2) straw mulching (CM), a nylon mesh bag with 10 g of straw was placed on the soil surface; (3) straw burying (CD), a nylon mesh bag with 10 g of straw was buried at a depth of 40 cm from the soil surface; (4) straw burying (CE), a nylon mesh bag with 40 cm of soil depth. Fifteen micro-zones were set up with a micro-zone area of 1 m2 and each micro-zone consisted of four treatments randomly grouped in three replicates per treatment. The on-site nylon bag burying trial started on 20 April 2021 and ended on 15 April 2022. Nylon bag and soil samples were collected on days 0, 30, 90, 180, 270, and 360. SOC, TN, straw component decomposition, and water droplet-soil contact angle were determined. Our results showed that the CE treatment increased soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) content compared to the CM and CD treatments. Compared with CK, straw decomposition rates increased by 13.3%, 30.8%, and 22.3% in the CM, CD, and CE treatments, respectively. Lignin decomposition rates increased by 7.8%, 27.3%, and 16.2%; cellulose decomposition rates increased by 14.6%, 35.4%, and 27.3%; and hemicellulose decomposition rates increased by 17.2%, 31.7% and 23.7% in the CD treatment, respectively. Compared with CK, the contact angle of droplets in the CD treatment was statistically significantly increased by 91.5% when the droplets remained on the soil surface for 5 s. The rate of decrease of droplet contact angle with time was statistically significantly decreased by 11.8%, and the penetration rate of droplets on the soil surface was slower. Overall, the CD treatment promoted straw decomposition and increased SWR compared to the CM and CE treatments. which are important attributes to enhance soil quality and improve soil structural stability.

Abstract Background Inflammatory osteolysis, a major complication of total joint replacement surgery, can cause prosthesis failure and necessitate revision surgery. Macrophages are key effector immune cells in inflammatory responses, but excessive M1-polarization of dysfunctional macrophages leads to the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines and severe loss of bone tissue. Here, we report the development of macrophage-biomimetic porous SiO2-coated ultrasmall Se particles (porous Se@SiO2 nanospheres) to manage inflammatory osteolysis. Results Macrophage membrane-coated porous Se@SiO2 nanospheres(M-Se@SiO2) attenuated lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory osteolysis via a dual-immunomodulatory effect. As macrophage membrane decoys, these nanoparticles reduced endotoxin levels and neutralized proinflammatory cytokines. Moreover, the release of Se could induce macrophage polarization toward the anti-inflammatory M2-phenotype. These effects were mediated via the inhibition of p65, p38, and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling. Additionally, the immune environment created by M-Se@SiO2 reduced the inhibition of osteogenic differentiation caused by proinflammation cytokines, as confirmed through in vitro and in vivo experiments. Conclusion Our findings suggest that M-Se@SiO2 have an immunomodulatory role in LPS-induced inflammation and bone remodeling, which demonstrates that M-Se@SiO2 are a promising engineered nanoplatform for the treatment of osteolysis occurring after arthroplasty. Abstract Background This study sought to investigate the predictive value and regulatory mechanism of serum miR-499a-5p in sepsis-induced myocardial dysfunction (SIMD). Methods A total of 60 patients with sepsis and 60 healthy volunteers were enrolled in this study. The serum levels of miRNAs (miR-451, miR-378 and miR-499a-5p) were detected. Receiver operating characteristic curve and logistic regression analysis were used to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic value of miR-499a-5p in SIMD patients. AC16 cells were used to establish SIMD model in vitro using lipopolysaccharide (LPS). An analysis was conducted for miR-499a-5p expression, cell viability, and the concentration of creatine kinase-MB isoform (CK-MB), brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and cytochrome C oxidase IV (COX IV). The downstream target of miR-499a-5p was verified. Results Our results revealed a poor expression of miR-499a-5p in the serum of SIMD patients, while no significant difference was evident for miR-451 and miR-378. The level of miR-499a-5p in the survival group was higher than the non-survival group. miR-499a-5p elicited good diagnostic and prognostic value for SIMD. Our findings revealed that miR-499a-5p was decreased significantly in LPS-treated cardiomyocytes. After overexpression of miR-499a-5p, the cell viability increased, and the concentrations of CK-MB and BNP were decreased, while the concentrations of SOD and COX IV were increased. EIF4E was validated as the target of miR-499a-5p. After overexpression of EIF4E, the cell viability was decreased and the concentrations of CK-MB and BNP were increased while the concentrations of SOD and COX IV were decreased. Conclusion The level of miR-499a-5p is weak in SIMD patients. miR-499a-5p has a good diagnostic and prognostic value for SIMD by inhibiting EIF4E transcription.

This study aims to assess the effects of the partial replacement of whole corn silage (WCS) with fermented pineapple peel residue (FPPR) on growth, serological parameters, muscle quality, rumen microorganisms, and fecal microorganisms. A total of 24 Chuanzhong black goats weighing 10.23 ± 1.42 kg were evaluated in a randomized complete trial design in accordance with the following treatments: (1) 0% FPPR in the diet, (2) 25% FPPR in the diet, and (3) 50% FPPR in the diet. In goats, the partial substitution of FPPR for WCS increased the abundance of probiotics, such as Blautia, Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens, and Ruminococcus albus, and did not exert significant effects on overall serological parameters and muscle quality. In conclusion, the partial substitution of FPPR for WCS in the diet did not impair or affect the productive performance of goats.

ObjectiveTo analyze the correlation between susceptibility single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and the severity of clinical symptoms in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), so as to supplement the clinical significance of gene polymorphism and increase our understanding of the association between genetic mutations and ADHD phenotypes.Methods193 children with ADHD were included in our study from February 2017 to February 2020 in the Children’s ADHD Clinic of the author’s medical institution. 23 ADHD susceptibility SNPs were selected based on the literature, and multiple polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeted capture sequencing technology was used for gene analysis. A series of ADHD-related questionnaires were used to reflect the severity of the disease, and the correlation between the SNPs of specific sites and the severity of clinical symptoms was evaluated. R software was used to search for independent risk factors by multivariate logistic regression and the “corplot” package was used for correlation analysis.ResultsAmong the 23 SNP loci of ADHD children, no mutation was detected in 6 loci, and 2 loci did not conform to Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Of the remaining 15 loci, there were 9 SNPs, rs2652511 (SLC6A3 locus), rs1410739 (OBI1-AS1 locus), rs3768046 (TIE1 locus), rs223508 (MANBA locus), rs2906457 (ST3GAL3 locus), rs4916723 (LINC00461 locus), rs9677504 (SPAG16 locus), rs1427829 (intron) and rs11210892 (intron), correlated with the severity of clinical symptoms of ADHD. Specifically, rs1410739 (OBI1-AS1 locus) was found to simultaneously affect conduct problems, control ability and abstract thinking ability of children with ADHD.ConclusionThere were 9 SNPs significantly correlated with the severity of clinical symptoms in children with ADHD, and the rs1410739 (OBI1-AS1 locus) may provide a new direction for ADHD research. Our study builds on previous susceptibility research and further investigates the impact of a single SNP on the severity of clinical symptoms of ADHD. This can help improve the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of ADHD.

BackgroundMedical students play an indispensable role in providing smoking cessation counseling. Despite the rapid increase in tobacco use, there is little data on what Chinese medical students know or are taught about it. This study aims to investigate the relationship between medical students' tobacco education level, clinical experience, and tobacco cessation counseling (TCC) provided by medical students.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was carried out among clinical medical students of Chongqing medical university. An anonymous, self-administered questionnaire included items on demographic information, perceptions, and perceived preparedness, clinical medical students' self-reported level of education about alternative tobacco products, and traditional cigarettes. We assessed their perspectives toward TCC using a 5-point Likert scale. Descriptive and binary logistic regression analyses were carried out.ResultsA total of 1,263 medical students completed the questionnaire. The majority of students (85%) expressed a willingness to provide TCC to patients in need. However, only half of the students stated unequivocally that they knew some ways and methods of tobacco cessation, while 18% stated that they did not know methods of tobacco cessation. Tobacco education and clinical experience were significantly associated with the ability to provide TCC. Our findings revealed that students with more clinical experience (undergraduates: B = 0.326, P < 0.001; postgraduates: B = 0.518, P < 0.001) were significantly more likely to have a greater self-reported comprehensive ability to provide TCC.ConclusionTobacco education and clinical experience can enhance the ability of medical students to provide smoking cessation counseling. There is a need to focus on alternative tobacco products with changing times, and curriculum planners should collaborate to incorporate comprehensive tobacco prevention and cessation training into the medical school curriculum.

Ultra-high-field (UHF) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has potential for imaging disease including cancer metastasis. Here, the authors develop an ultra-sensitive antiferromagnetic nanoparticle probe with a small magnetisation for use in UHF MRI and demonstrate the ability to detect small primary tumours and micrometastases in mice.

BackgroundTo determine the association of the retinal capillary plexus (RCP) and ganglion cell complex (GCC) with cognitive impairment using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA).MethodsA cross-sectional, community-based study utilizing data from the participants enrolled between August 2019 and January 2020 in the Jidong Eye Cohort Study. We assessed the vessel density in RCP and GCC thickness using OCTA, and cognitive testing using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Cognitive impairment in this study was defined as MoCA score < 24. We used multivariable analysis to evaluate the association of RCP and GCC with cognitive impairment after adjusting for confounders.ResultsThis study analyzed 1555 participants. The mean age of participants was 52.3 (8.4) years, and 861 (55.4%) were women. Cognitive impairment was observed in 268 (17.2%) participants. The adjusted odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) for parafovea vessel density in the deep RCP with cognitive impairment was 1.20 (1.03–1.39). For vessel area and length density surrounding foveal avascular zone with cognitive impairment, the ORs with 95% CIs were 1.23 (1.07–1.41) and 1.30 (1.13–1.49), respectively. For thickness in the superior GCC with cognitive impairment, the OR with 95% CI was 1.16 (1.01–1.32).ConclusionLower vessel density in the RCP and thinner GCC were associated with cognitive impairment. Our results suggest that alterations in the RCP and GCC could provide further evidence when assessing the cognitive function and may even be potentially useful biomarkers in the detection of cognitive impairment.

Litter size is an important indicator to measure the reproductive performance of goats, which is affected by the reproductive function of animals. The hypothalamus, as the regulatory center of the endocrine system, plays an important role in the reproduction of female animals. Here, we performed high-throughput RNA sequencing using hypothalamic tissue from high-fecundity and low-fecundity Leizhou goats to explore critical functional genes associated with litter size. Differentially expressed mRNA, lncRNA, and circRNAs were screened using DESeq and were enriched, and then analyzed by Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Gene and Genome. Results showed that some of these differentially expressed mRNAs could be enriched in reproductive processes, jak-STAT, prolactin signaling pathway, and other signaling pathways related to reproduction, such as SOCS3. Furthermore, the central proteins POSTN, MFAP5, and DCN from protein–protein interaction may regulate animal reproductive activity by affecting cell proliferation and apoptosis. lncRNA MSTRG.33887.2 as well as circRNAs chicirc_098002, chicirc_072583, and chicirc_053531 may be able to influence animal reproduction by participating in folate metabolism and energy metabolism homeostasis through their respective target genes. Our results expand the molecular mechanism of hypothalamic regulation on animal reproduction.

Simple and light-weighted quasi-zero stiffness (QZS) isolators can be designed based on nonlinear and negative stiffness generated by the snap-through effect of bistable structures. Traditionally, the snap-through force of the bistable structure is limited which makes the weight which can be isolated based on this mechanism very low. This paper investigates increasing loading capacity of this kind of isolator by using an optimized and varying sectional profile. Numerical models were derived for the bistable structures with variable sectional distributions. Optimized sections’ alignment of the bistable beam was derived based on the numerical model which was consequently validated by experimental results. Influences of the bistable beams with a variable section on nonlinear stiffness characteristics and performance of the isolator were at last investigated with the harmonic balance method.

The parallel seismic method is an effective method to detect the length of pile. In the paper, based on the ray theory of Snell’s law, the two methods of determining the pile length by the first transmission P-wave in the side hole are discussed and modified. The error influencing factors of both two methods are then analysed. Finally, the finite element software ABAQUS was used to simulate the inspection of pile foundations by the parallel seismic method. The numerical simulation results were compared with the results of the error calculation theory to verify the applicability of the error calculation theory. The error calculation theory was then tested and applied in an engineering example. The results show that (1) in order to reduce errors, unreasonable data points need to be removed when fitting the inspection data points and (2) the larger the pile slenderness ratio, the smaller the distance between the side holes and the pile, and the more accurate the pile length results obtained.

Abstract Background Endoscopic sphincterotomy (ES) is the standard treatment for common bile duct stones. The reported findings regarding complications, such as biliary pancreatitis and cholangitis, differ between cholecystectomy after ES. The purpose of this study is to compare cholecystectomy outcomes after endoscopic treatment of common bile duct stones whether or not the incidence of recurrent pancreatitis and cholangitis is reduced, especially in high-risk patients. Methods We analyzed 8 studies, including 7 randomized controlled trials retrieved from the PubMed (1990–2019), Embase (1990–2019), and Cochrane (1990–2019) databases for trials comparing the two strategies for treatment of gallstones after ES. A related study on gallbladder removal after ES was acquired, followed by analysis of each group using RevMan. Risk ratios (RRs) were calculated for categorical variables and differences in means were calculated for continuous variables. Results We retrieved a total of 8 studies, including seven randomized controlled trials and one retrospective study. A total of 12,717 patients were included in the study (4922 in the early cholecystectomy group and 7795 in the gallbladder in situ group). During the follow-up period, 41 patients had pancreatitis after ES in the cholecystectomy group and 177 patients in the wait-and-see group. Abstract Simultaneous photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) is beneficial for enhanced cancer therapy due to the synergistic effect. Conventional materials developed for synergistic PTT/PDT are generally multicomponent agents that need complicated preparation procedures and be activated by multiple laser sources. The emerging monocomponent diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based conjugated small molecular agents enable dual PTT/PDT under a single laser irradiation, but suffer from low singlet oxygen quantum yield, which severely restricts the therapeutic efficacy. Herein, we report acceptor-oriented molecular design of a donor–acceptor–donor (D–A–D) conjugated small molecule (IID-ThTPA)-based phototheranostic agent, with isoindigo (IID) as selective acceptor and triphenylamine (TPA) as donor. The strong D–A strength and narrow singlet–triplet energy gap endow IID-ThTPA nanoparticles (IID-ThTPA NPs) high mass extinction coefficient (18.2 L g−1 cm−1), competitive photothermal conversion efficiency (35.4%), and a dramatically enhanced singlet oxygen quantum yield (84.0%) comparing with previously reported monocomponent PTT/PDT agents. Such a high PTT/PDT performance of IID-ThTPA NPs achieved superior tumor cooperative eradicating capability in vitro and in vivo.

Bariatric surgery has been used to reduce weight and shown to be beneficial for hypertension control. However, little is known about the changes in blood pressure in early stage after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). We conducted a prospective study of 60 LSG patients with one year-follow-up. The blood pressure of the patients was measured preoperatively and from day 1 to 12 months postoperatively. The use of antihypertensives, body weight, ghrelin and leptin levels were also recorded. Following LSG, excess weight loss (EWL) was 72.6 ± 22.3% and 83.1 ± 19.3% 6 and 12 months after operation, respectively. At 12 months after operation, the average body mass index and body weight decreased by 14.1 kg/m2 and 39 kg, respectively. Dyslipidemia was resolved in 86% (15/18) of the patients within 12 months. Diabetes was resolved in 90% (16/18) patients within 6 months and joint pain was resolved in 78% patients and 86% of the patients no longer had sleep apnea syndrome within 12 months. The blood pressure of some hypertensive patients returned to normal on the first day after operation. Significant reduction in blood pressure was observed within 10 days after operation. Both Ghrelin and Leptin levels lowered after LSG, particularly within 10 day after operation. 12 months after the operation, hypertension was resolved in 87% and lowered in 100% of the patients. Our work demonstrates that LSG reduces blood pressure before significant weight loss occurs, suggesting that there might be neural and hormonal mechanisms involved in the blood pressure reduction.

Objective: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a commonly diagnosed neuropsychiatric disorder in children, which is characterized by inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (R-fMRI), the alterations of static and dynamic characteristics of intrinsic brain activity have been identified in patients with ADHD. Yet, it remains unclear whether the concordance among indices of dynamic R-fMRI is altered in ADHD.Methods: R-fMRI scans obtained from 50 patients with ADHD and 28 healthy controls (HC) were used for the current study. We calculated the regional dynamic changes in brain activity indices using the sliding-window method and compared the differences in variability of these indices between ADHD patients and HCs. Further, the concordance among these dynamic indices was calculated and compared. Finally, the relationship between variability/concordance of these indices and ADHD-relevant clinical test scores was investigated.Results: Patients with ADHD showed decreased variability of dynamic amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (dALFF) in the left middle frontal gyrus and increased one in right middle occipital gyrus, as compared with the HCs. Besides, ADHD patients showed decreased voxel-wise concordance in the left middle frontal gyrus. Further, lower voxel-wise concordance in ADHD’s left middle frontal gyrus was associated with more non-perseverative errors in Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, which reflects worse cognitive control.Conclusion: Our findings suggest that variability and concordance in dynamic brain activity may serve as biomarkers for the diagnosis of ADHD. Further, the decreased voxel-wise concordance is associated with deficit in cognitive control in ADHD patients.

Summary: Singlet oxygen (1O2) is extensively employed by reactive oxygen species (ROS)-based cancer therapies, such as photodynamic therapy (PDT) and chemodynamic therapy (CDT). However, the dependences of PDT on light and CDT on complex chemodynamic reactions greatly limit their 1O2-generating efficiencies. Here, we exploit strain and electronic effects to fabricate a bimetallic nanocatalyst by coating a gold nanorod (AuNR) with ~2 platinum (Pt) atomic layers (AuPt0.09), which efficiently generates 1O2 from ground-state oxygen (3O2) by electron-transfer-mediated spin reduction. Density functional theory reveals strain, and electronic effects promote the adsorption of 3O2 onto AuPt0.09, which dramatically enhances 1O2 generation and imparts AuPt0.09, the highest catalytic constant ever reported for 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine oxidation to the best of our knowledge. With a pH-dependent catalytic activity, AuPt0.09 realizes acidity-dependent antitumor effects both in vitro and in vivo, a proof-of-concept demonstration of autocatalytic bimetallic nanocatalyst for light-free oxygen sensitization therapy, which may open a new avenue for 1O2-centered therapeutics.

Abstract Background Staphylococcal aureus (S. aureus) has become the leading causative pathogen of Prosthetic Joint Infection (PJI), which is the most devastating complication after arthroplasty surgeries. Due to the biofilm formation ability and emergence of multiple-drugs resistance strains of S. aureus, it has become an urgency to find new anti-staphylococcal agents to establish effective prophylaxis and treatment strategy for PJI. Extracted from a traditional Chinese herb, berberine is proved active in inhibiting S. aureus, while whether it exerts the same effect on PJI-related S. aureus remains unknown. This study aims to investigate the antimicrobial activity of berbrine against clinical derived PJI-related S. aureus and whether its inhibiting efficacy is associated with subtypes of S. aureus. Methods Eighteen PJI-associated S. aureus were collected and their Multi-locus Sequence Types (MLST) and susceptibility to berberine both in planktonic and biofilm form were investigated. In this paper, a novel method is proposed to determine unique and stable relative complex permittivity of low-loss materials from the transmission/reflection (TR) measurements, though the positions of the materials under test are unknown. The proposed method systematically combines artificial neural network (ANN) models with the Nicolson-Ross-Weir (NRW) method. Firstly, an ANN model is established to estimate the position of the sample in the transmission line. Secondly, the NRW method is adapted to estimate the relative complex permittivity, and the unique solutions are selected with the help of dielectric properties. Thirdly, the noniterative technique in the literature is adapted to avoid the instabilities in the relative complex permittivity. Finally, the S-parameters of the amplitude-only or transmission-only measurements are used to accurately determine the relative complex permittivity. The proposed method is experimentally validated by two samples. The simulated data are used to further validate the accuracy of the proposed method. The results of the proposed method based on the transmission-only measurements are the most accurate.

The tetraploid Avena species in the section Pachycarpa Baum, including A. insularis, A. maroccana, and A. murphyi, are thought to be involved in the evolution of hexaploid oats; however, their genome designations are still being debated. Repetitive DNA sequences play an important role in genome structuring and evolution, so understanding the chromosomal organization and distribution of these sequences in Avena species could provide valuable information concerning genome evolution in this genus. In this study, the chromosomal organizations and distributions of six repetitive DNA sequences (including three SSR motifs (TTC, AAC, CAG), one 5S rRNA gene fragment, and two oat A and C genome specific repeats) were investigated using non-denaturing fluorescence in situ hybridization (ND-FISH) in the three tetraploid species mentioned above and in two hexaploid oat species. Preferential distribution of the SSRs in centromeric regions was seen in the A and D genomes, whereas few signals were detected in the C genomes. Some intergenomic translocations were observed in the tetraploids; such translocations were also detected between the C and D genomes in the hexaploids. These results provide robust evidence for the presence of the D genome in all three tetraploids, strongly suggesting that the genomic constitution of these species is DC and not AC, as had been thought previously.
