1. Bioindicators of climate and trophic state in lowland and highland aquatic ecosystems of the Northern Neotropics

Abstract: Chironomids, diatoms and microcrustaceans that inhabit aquatic ecosystems of the Northern Neotropics are abundant and diverse. Some species are highly sensitive to changes in water chemical composition and trophic state. This study was undertaken as a first step in developing transfer functions to infer past environmental conditions in the Northern lowland Neotropics. Bioindicator species abundances were related to multiple environmental variables to exploit their use as environmental and paleoenvironmental indicators. We collected and analyzed water and surface sediment samples from 63 waterbodies located along a broad trophic state gradient and steep gradients of altitude (~0-1 560m.a.s.l.) and precipitation (~400-3 200mm/y), from NW Yucatán Peninsula (Mexico) to southern Guatemala. We related 14 limnological variables to relative abundances of 282 diatom species, 66 chironomid morphospecies, 51 species of cladocerans, 29 non-marine ostracode species and six freshwater calanoid copepods. Multivariate statistics indicated that bicarbonate is the strongest driver of chironomid and copepod distribution. Trophic state is the second most important factor that determines chironomid distribution. Conductivity, which is related to the precipitation gradient and marine influence on the Yucatán Peninsula, is the main variable that shapes diatom, ostracode and cladoceran communities. Diatoms, chironomids and cladocerans displayed higher diversities (H=2.4-2.6) than ostracodes and copepods (H=0.7- 1.8). Species richness and diversity were greater at lower elevations (Los quironómidos, diatomeas y microcrustaceos que habitan ecosistemas acuáticos en el norte de los Neotrópicos son abundantes y diversos. Algunas especies son altamente sensibles a cambios en la composición química del agua y en el estado trófico. Este estudio se realizó como el primer paso para desarrollar funciones de transferencia para inferir condiciones ambientales en el norte de las tierras bajas de los Neotrópicos. Es por esto que las abundancias de especies bioindicadoras se relacionaron con múltiples variables ambientales con el fin de explotar al máximo su uso como indicadores ambientales y paleoambientales. Recolectamos y analizamos muestras de agua y de sedimento superficial de 63 cuerpos de agua, ubicados a lo largo de un gradiente trófico y de gradientes marcados de altitud (~0-1 560m.s.n.m.) y de precipitación (~400-3 200mm/año), desde el NO de la Península de Yucatán (México) hasta el sur de Guatemala. Relacionamos 14 variables limnológicas con las abundancias relativas de 282 especies de diatomeas, 66 morfoespecies de quironómidos, 51 especies de cladóceros, 29 especies de ostrácodos no-marinos y seis especies de agua dulce de cladóceros calanoides. La estadística multivariada indicó que el bicarbonato es el principal determinante de la distribución de quironómidos y copépodos. El estado trófico es el segundo factor más importante en determinar la distribución de quironómidos. La conductividad, que está relacionada con el gradiente de precipitación e influencia marina en la Península de Yucatán, es la principal variable en influir las comunidades de diatomeas, ostrácodos y cladóceros. Abstract: Several taxa of Stephanodiscaceae were found in the upper section of Pleistocene sediments from Lake Petén-Itzá (Guatemala). A new fossil genus Cyclocostis Paillès gen. nov. and new extant species Discostella gabinii Paillès & Sylvestre sp. nov. are described. Cyclocostis gen. nov. is characterized by a strongly tangentially undulated valve surface, coarse unequal striation reaching a central punctum in the valve center, an absence of central lamina and domed criba, widely open alveoli with one median recessed costa bearing marginal fultoportulae and a single rimoportula all within a ring. A single valve face fultoportula is present on the raised part of the valve opposite the rimoportula. Differences relative to similar genera and the delimitation of a new genus are discussed. Discostella gabinii sp. nov. is distinguished by circular and flat valves, a small central area bearing 5 to > 30 scattered large areolae giving a colliculate appearance, medium-sized alveoli, marginal fultoportulae on every 4–5th costa, a single rimoportula and internally smooth valve center. Differences to similar taxa in the genus Discostella are discussed. The succession of the species of Cyclotella, Discostella and Cyclocostis gen. nov. in our record could represent eco-phenotypic responses to particular environmental stress / change.

Abstract: International audience; Modern diatom assemblages were investigated in the Ounianga Lakes located in the driest part of the Chadian Sahara. These lakes still exist today due to groundwater seepage. They contain a variety of diatom species, one of which could not be identified. Here we describe a new species of Staurophora, S. ouniangaensis sp. nov. based on detailed light and scanning electron microscopy observations. The new taxon presents all morphological characters attributed to this genus and differs from other Staurophora species mainly by its specific valve outline and the slightly twisted frustules along the transapical axis. We compared this new species with the morphologically resembling Cymbella obtusa which was reported from Chad. The latter taxon has a much coarser stria density than our newly described species. Staurophora ouniangaensis sp. nov. supports that Staurophora species prefer inland saline environments. Indeed, in the Ounianga lakes, the new species was mainly observed in mesosaline to hypersaline waters.

Abstract: The perennial and seasonal wetland diversity of the Moroccan Middle Atlas region provides a valuable "test-bed" for understanding the response of different hydrosystems to climatic variations. A multiproxy study, based on sedimentological descriptions, together with mineralogy, carbonate content, XRF core scanning and biological proxies supported by AMS C-14 dates, were applied to the 3-m-long core extracted from "Flowers Marsh", a small Middle Atlas pond. This approach provides evidence for a continuous paleohydrological and paleoenvironmental record during the Mid- to Late Holocene. The investigated aquatic system evolved from a dry or very shallow waterbody towards a system with a progressively rising water level. The dominance of the detrital fraction with poor preservation of bioindicators and eroded pollen, indicate the existence of an ephemeral waterbody from 6000 cal. yr BP until a transitional phase characterized by new sedimentological facies and the appearance of ostracods around 2300 cal. yr BP. This transition, ending at 2000 cal. yr BP, is interpreted as a flooding phase leading to an ephemeral lake. It is certainly fed by the excess water from the nearby Aguelmam Azigza Lake during its high level period. Afterwards, enhanced organic matter deposition and the appearance of well-preserved diatoms until 1400 cal. yr BP corroborate a high water-level trend. Endogenic carbonate to detrital fraction ratios indicate fluctuating, but generally shallow, water levels from 1400 cal. yr BP until 650 cal. yr BP when a relatively rapid rise in water level occurred. Flowers Marsh data are, generally, consistent with most of the existing regional records. The highstand period recorded between 2000 and 1400 cal. yr is a common feature extending to more distant sites from the northern Mediterranean. It corresponds to the wetter Iberian-Roman period. Fluctuating shallow water levels recorded since 1400 cal. yr BP to now could be linked to drier/wetter phases associated with the Medieval Climate Anomaly and the Little Ice Age (650- 150 cal. yr BP) respectively, in the western Mediterranean realm. The present study demonstrates the ability of Flowers Marsh to record valuable palaeohydrological changes since the Mid-Holocene and confirms the high sensitivity of Middle Atlas hydrosystems to climatic changes.

6. Diatom-oxygen isotopic record from high-altitude Petit Lake (2200 m a.s.l) in the Mediterranean Alps: shedding light on a climatic pulse

Abstract: The 4.2 kyrs event, used as a marker of holocene stratigraphy, has been described as a rapid climate change in the northern hemisphere triggering droughts in the Mediterranean region. However, the severity and geographical extent of this event are still the subject of investigation considering the small number of palaeoclimatic records for this time period, and the presence of contrasted climatic expressions between areas. At Petit Lake (France, Mediterranean Alps, 2200 m a.s.l) a multiproxy study of Holocene lake sediments has revealed major changes in erosion processes and phytoplanktonic assemblages in the lake ecosystem around 4200 cal. BP. According to pollen analysis, deforestation is unlikely to be the main explanation of environmental changes as the watershed was covered by open vegetation for the duration of the study period. To test the implication of climate, our study presents an analysis of oxygen isotopes (δ18O) in diatoms describing hydrological modalities during the 4.2 kyrs event in the Mediterranean Alps. The highest values of δ18Odiatom occur from 4400 to 3900 cal. BP and are interpreted as an increase in water evaporation and/or a decrease in freshwater inputs to the lake system. Changes in water balance might have been associated with a change in precipitation sources towards a greater influence of precipitation coming from the Mediterranean area. These results are concomitant to an increase in erosion in the watershed and high representation of very low-dispersal pollen in the sediments suggesting the presence of intense runoff. This new isotopic record together with previously-published proxy-data, allows us to describe the 4.2 kyrs event at Petit Lake as an increase in Mediterranean climate influences in the region, amounting to a general dry period punctuated by episodes of intense runoff occurring on the catchment slopes.

Abstract We reconstruct environmental conditions of the period 53-14 kyr BP in the continental northern Neotropical region. We evaluate in detail the magnitude of climatic fluctuations and their effects on aquatic communities during six Heinrich Stadials (HS1-HS5a), using sediments from Lake Peten Itza, Guatemala, and a multiproxy approach. In Lake Peten Itza typical Heinrich Stadials (HSs) are recorded in sediments as alternations of gypsum and clay, and abrupt changes in magnetic susceptibility, CaCO3 and biological compositions. This suggests that HSs were periods of hydrological unbalance, characterized by dry spells, punctuating the predominant humid conditions characterizing the period 53-14 kyr BP. The ultrastructure of HSs allows us to identify four different types of climatic conditions associated to HSs: 1) prevailing dry conditions but changing to humid (HS5, HS3); 2) predominantly humid conditions but changing to arid (HS2); 3) fluctuating humid-dry-humid (HS4, HS1); and 4) arid with high lake water conductivity (HS5a). The continuous presence of tropical ostracode species during HSs suggests that lake water temperatures were not drastically lowered. Ostracode-based transfer functions indicate that during HSs, epilimnetic water temperatures decreased by 1–3 °C compared to mean modern temperatures. Lake solute composition and conductivity were strongly affected by HSs. During HS5a and HS1 we estimate conductivity values > 800 μS cm−1. Diversity indices show significant differences (F5,70 = 3.74, p = 0.004) of ostracode species composition among HSs. Highest diversities occurred during HS5a, HS4 and HS1, which display greater climatic alterations than the other HSs. Fluctuating climates seem to have exerted positive effects on diversity of aquatic communities by producing an increase in habitat heterogeneity.

Abstract: International audience; Palaeoenvironmental reconstructions of ecosystem responses to external forcing are generally limited by the difficulty of understanding the geosystem as a whole, because of the complex interactions between ecological compartments. Therefore, identifying which geosystem compartments or proxies co-vary is a prerequisite in unravelling the propagation of disturbances (e.g. climatic or anthropogenic) from one compartment to another. A multiproxy study of a continuous 13,500-year sedimentary profile cored in Lake Allos (European Alps, 2200 m a.s.l) was carried out on the basis of high-resolution sedimentological, geochemical, and botanical analyses, as well as determination of aquatic biotic proxies (diatoms, ostracods). These multiproxy datasets are rare at these high altitudes. Major changes occurred in the course of the palaeoenvironmental history of this alpine watershed at 12,000, 8600, 7200 and 3000 cal. BP. During the Holocene, two main transitions were recorded in all the ecological compartments (8600 and 3000 cal. BP), but the period 4500-3000 cal. BP stands out because of major changes that concerned only the lacustrine ecosystem. The frequent switches in lake level might correspond to the 4.2 ka climatic event. Proximity of this alpine lake to climatically-sensitive thresholds (ice-cover, thermal stratification, hydrological balance) may have amplified climatic signals in the lake ecosystem. This study illustrates the difficulties inherent to the use of common intra-Holocene stratigraphical limits, given that ecological compartments are likely to have different responses to forcing factors depending on the characteristics of the watershed and its capacity to accommodate disturbances. Abstract: Chironomids, diatoms and microcrustaceans that inhabit aquatic ecosystems of the Northern Neotropics are abundant and diverse. Some species are highly sensitive to changes in water chemical composition and trophic state. This study was undertaken as a first step in developing transfer functions to infer past environmental conditions in the Northern lowland Neotropics. Bioindicator species abundances were related to multiple environmental variables to exploit their use as environmental and paleoenvironmental indicators. We collected and analyzed water and surface sediment samples from 63 waterbodies located along a broad trophic state gradient and steep gradients of altitude (~0-1 560m.a.s.l.) and precipitation (~400-3 200mm/y), from NW Yucatán Peninsula (Mexico) to southern Guatemala. We related 14 limnological variables to relative abundances of 282 diatom species, 66 chironomid morphospecies, 51 species of cladocerans, 29 non-marine ostracode species and six freshwater calanoid copepods. Multivariate statistics indicated that bicarbonate is the strongest driver of chironomid and copepod distribution. Trophic state is the second most important factor that determines chironomid distribution. Conductivity, which is related to the precipitation gradient and marine influence on the Yucatán Peninsula, is the main variable that shapes diatom, ostracode and cladoceran communities. Abstract: We analyzed phytolith and diatom remains preserved at 45 Miocene and Pliocene localities dated between 8 and 1 Ma in northern Chad (16-17 degrees N). Some of these localities yielded cranial remains, lower jaws, and teeth of the hominin species Australopithecus bahrelghazali (similar to 3.6 Ma) and Sahelanthropus tchadensis (similar to 7 Ma). Of the 111 sediment samples analyzed, 41 yielded phytoliths, 20 yielded diatoms, and seven yielded both phytoliths and diatoms. Freshwater planktonic and tychoplanktonic diatom species, indicative of lacustrine conditions, are dominant (>91%) in the samples. The phytolith assemblages indicate an opening of the vegetation and a general trend toward an expansion of grass-dominated environments during the time spanning the two hominin occurrences in Chad. The phytoliths suggest the presence of a mosaic environment, including closed forest patches, palm groves, and mixed/grassland formations, between 7.5 and 7 Ma, the replacement by palm grove-like vegetation at approximately 6.5-5 Ma, and the presence of exclusive grass-dominated formations after 4.5 Ma. The type-locality of S. tchadensis (TM266) was likely similar to modern palm grove formations with an arboreal cover percentage >= 40%. The type locality of A. bahrelghazali (KT12) was a grass-dominated ecosystem (likely savanna) with an unrated percentage of arboreal cover. Furthermore, the grass phytolith data support the existence of a (recurrent) Sahelian-like dry climate in northern Chad since at least 8 Ma. Therefore the local closed vegetation formations in the Djurab region at 7.5-7 Ma were sustained by aquatic systems (such as lakes or related rivers, marshes) rather than by extensive annual precipitation.

Abstract: International audience; The aim of this study is to describe the environmental and climate changes that occurred in the mountains of Aubrac at the transition between the Lateglacial and the Holocene, from a comparative analysis of fossil Coleoptera and pollen, and a series of 23 C-14 dates. The changes affecting the ecological categories of Coleoptera lead to a division of the sequence into 5 beetle assemblage zones (BAZ): the lowermost BAZ A is characterized by extremely poor assemblages (periglacial environment); BAZ B (Oldest Dryas and Lateglacial Interstadial) is marked by regular occurrences of taxa associated with open environments, aquatic taxa associated with running and highly oxygenated water, and cold adapted taxa with relatively low numbers; BAZ C (Younger Dryas) corresponds to two important events: a particular abundance of cold adapted taxa and a marked decrease of running water taxa, beetles associated with herbaceous vegetation and open environments are also well represented; BAZ D (Early Holocene) corresponds to the total disappearance of cold adapted taxa; the transition BAZ C/BAZ D is marked also by a dramatic peak of running water taxa; the uppermost BAZ E (Early/Mid Holocene) is marked by a total absence of running water taxa which are replaced by standing water or taxa tolerant of a range of water conditions, a particular abundance of wetland taxa, and taxa associated with herbaceous vegetation and open environments. Beetle and pollen data suggest that the harsh climatic conditions prevailing in the Aubrac mountains did not allow warm dependent fauna and trees to establish during the Lateglacial Interstadial, at least in the Roustieres region, and that wide open landscapes occupied the plateau at that time. The Older Dryas, a cold spell previously recorded at La Taphanel (Cantal), is not visible in the Roustieres record, probably because of the higher altitude at Roustieres, whereas the Younger Dryas is strongly expressed. During the Holocene, concordant beetles and pollen data enable to reconstruct the rapid recolonization of the plateau by mesophilous trees (Ulmus, Quercus), suggesting the possible presence of refugia to the southern slopes of the Aubrac plateau. Insect/pollen comparisons provide evidence for hydrological changes in the former lake of Roustieres and suggest that lacustrine water level changes often used as indicator of precipitation regime changes should be taken with caution. Abstract: International audience; The analysis of fossil chironomid and diatom assemblages from a sedimentary record from Les Roustieres peat bog (Massif Central, France, 1196 m asl) allows the reconstruction of past environmental and climate changes during the late-glacial and early Holocene. Chironomid assemblages showed that the infilling of the palaeolake had commenced during the Oldest Dryas (GS-2b) as suggested by the rapid decrease in chironomid species associated with the cold and deep zone of lakes and by their replacement by littoral and eutrophic taxa. Quantitative July temperature reconstructions, based on the chironomid data, suggest that mean July air temperature (Tjul) ranged between 6 degrees C and 11 degrees C at the termination of the Oldest Dryas period (GS-2b). Climate began to warm at the start of the Bolling period (GI-1e), between 15,000 and 14,800 cal yr BP, with a rise in Tjul of about 4 degrees C. This climate warming is contemporaneous with lake eutrophication as suggested by diatoms and chironomids. Maximum temperatures of 13-14 degrees C were reached around 13,600 cal yr BP during the Allered period (GI-1c-GI-1a). The Younger Dryas period (GS-1) is marked by a return to cold conditions with Tjul of about 10 degrees C during a first phase, then 13 degrees C in its terminal part. A probable increase in the duration of the ice-cover may have favoured arctic and alpine diatom species. The early-Holocene climate improvement is marked by a rise in Tjul of about 3 degrees C. Abstract: This study presents mineralogical and geochemical data from a borehole drilled near the locality of Bol (13 degrees 27'N, 14 degrees 44'E), in the eastern archipelago of the modern Lake Chad (Chad). Samples were taken from a similar to 200 m long core section forming a unique sub-continuous record for Central Africa. Among these samples, 25 are dated between 6.4 and 2.4 Ma. Dominant minerals are clays (66% average) mixed with varying amounts of silt and diatomite. The clay fraction consists of Fe-beidellite (87% average), kaolinite, and traces of illite. Clay minerals originate from the erosion of the vertisols that surrounded the paleolake Chad. Sedimentological data indicate that a permanent lake (or recurrent lakes) existed from 6.7 until 2.4 Ma in the vicinity of Bol. By comparison with modern latitudinal distribution of vertisols in Africa the climate was Sudanian-like. Changes in the sedimentation rate suggest a succession of wetter and dryer periods during at least six million years in the region during the critical time period covering the Miocene-Pliocene transition.

Abstract: International audience; During the ‘Green Sahara event’, water bodies developed throughout the Sahara and Sahel, reflecting the enhanced influence of the Atlantic monsoon rainfall. Major lakes then dried out between 6.5 and 3.5 ka. This study investigates land cover change and lacustrine environment during the Holocene at I-n-Atei, Southern Algeria, a desert region lying in the hyperarid core of the Sahara. This site is remarkable by its extent (up to 80 km2) and by the exceptional preservation and thickness of the lacustrine deposits (7.2 m). I-n-Atei was a lake from 11 to 7.4 ka, then it dried out and left place to a swampy environment. Charcoal concentrations show that the surroundings of the lake were vegetated throughout the wet period with two short phases of possible vegetation deterioration associated with a lowering of the lake level at 9.3 and 8.2 ka, coeval with well-known dry events in the tropics. The stable carbon isotope record reflects the penetration of C4 herbaceous populations in replacement of the original C3, typical of the regional vegetation at the time of the maximum lake expansion. The δ13C of charcoals increase non-linearly with the 14C-based ages from − 24.5‰ to − 13.0‰ (V-PDB). Assuming that these extreme values sample both C3 and C4 plant end-members, mass balance calculations suggest that C3 were replaced by C4 plants according to an exponential decay law with a half-life (t1/2) of 850 ± 110 years. The replacement of C3 by C4 plants occurred in two main steps: a mixed C3–C4 vegetation of “wooded grassland” type was present from 10 ka to 8.4 ka while a C4 exclusive vegetation developed after 8.4 ka. After the end of the lacustrine phase a catastrophic event (flooding?) provoked the lifting of most of the lacustrine deposits and their re-deposition above the lacustrine sequence.

Abstract: International audience; Sediments from Lake Petit (2200m a.s.l., Southern Alps) are particularly relevant for analysis of coupled landscape palaeoecology and palaeolimnology. Diatom assemblages, organic matter composition of sediments (total nitrogen and organic carbon) and Pediastrum boryanum concentrations were obtained from a 144-cm-long core, enabling the reconstruction of the aquatic ecosystem over nearly the last 5000 cal. BP. From 4800 to 4300 cal. BP, Lake Petit was a stable diatom-productive water body dominated by alkaliphilous diatoms (Staurosirella pinnata). During this period, nutrients and cations were supplied by the chemical weathering of podzols that developed under conifer woodlands. This overall stability was suddenly interrupted at 4200 cal. BP by a major detrital pulse that was probably climate linked (4200 cal. BP event) and that triggered a drop in diatom productivity and diversity. From 4100 to 2400 cal. BP, diatom productivity progressively decreased, whereas Pediastrum developed. Diatom assemblages were more diversified (predominance of Pseudostaurosira robusta, P. brevistriata and P. pseudoconstruens) and reflected a regime of continuous erosion, whereas slopes were colonised by grazed grasslands. Finally, from 2400 cal. BP to the present day, diatom assemblages reveal a slight acidification and nutrient enrichment of waters concomitant with increasing human pressure in the catchment. These results demonstrate the close links between ecosystems and the ready propagation of disturbances throughout watersheds that might lead to abrupt regime shifts in such alpine environments.

Abstract: International audience; Indoor aquatic mesocosms were designed to mimic pond ecosystems contaminated by a continuous point-source discharge of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2-NPs). Bare and citrate-coated CeO2-NPs exhibited different chemical and colloidal behaviors in the aquatic mesocosms. Bare CeO2-NPs were chemically stable but quickly homo-aggregated and settled out of the water column. Citrate-coated NPs both homo-and hetero-aggregated but only after the several days required to degrade the citrate coating. While they were more stable as a colloidal suspension, coated CeO2-NPs dissolved faster due to surface complexation with citrate, which resulted in the release of dissolved Ce into the water column. The different distributions over time between water/sediment or dissolved/particulate forms of Ce controlled the availability of Ce to benthic grazers (mollusk Planorbarius corneus) and planktonic filter feeders (copepod Eudiaptomus vulgaris).

Abstract: International audience; During the last deglaciation, the Bolivian Altiplano (15e23 S, 66e70 W) was occupied by paleolake Tauca covering, at least, ~51,000 km 2 at its maximum highstand between 16.5 and 15 ka. Twenty-five hundred years later, after a massive regression, a new transgressive phase, produced paleolake Coi-pasa, smaller than Tauca and restricted to the southern part of the basin. These paleolakes were overlooked at the west by the Sajama ice cap. The latter provides a continuous record of the oxygen isotopic composition of paleo-precipitation for the last 25 ka. Contemporaneously to the end of paleolake Tauca, around 14.3 ka, the Sajama ice cap recorded a significant increase in ice oxygen isotopic composition (d 18 O ice). This paper examines to what extent the disappearance of Lake Tauca contributed to precipitation on the Sajama summit and this specific isotopic variation. The water d 18 O values of paleolakes Tauca and Coipasa (d 18 O lake) were quantitatively reconstructed from 18.5 to 11.7 ka based on diatom isotopic composition (d 18 O diatoms) and ostracod isotopic composition (d 18 O carbonates) retrieved in lacus-trine sediments. At a centennial time scale, a strong trend appears: abrupt decreases of d 18 O lake during lake fillings are immediately followed by abrupt increases of d 18 O lake during lake level stable phases. The highest variation occurred at ~15.8 ka with a d 18 O lake decrease of about ~10‰, concomitant with the Lake Tauca highstand, followed ~400 years later by a 7‰ increase in d 18 O lake. A simple hydro-isotopic modeling approach reproduces consistently this rapid "decreaseeincrease" feature. Moreover, it suggests that this unexpected re-increase in d 18 O lake after filling phases can be partly explained by an equilibration of isotopic fluxes during the lake steady-state. Based on isotopic calculations during lake evaporation and a simple water stable isotopes balance between potential moisture sources at Sajama (advection versus lake evaporation), we show that total or partial evaporation (from 5 to 60%) of pale-olake Tauca during its major regression phase at 14.3 ka could explain the pronounced isotopic excursion at Sajama ice cap. These results suggest that perturbations of the local hydrological cycle in lacustrine areas may substantially affect the paleoclimatic interpretation of the nearby isotopic signals (e.g. ice core or speleothems).

Abstract: International audience; Physical-chemists, (micro) biologists, and ecologists need to conduct meaningful experiments to study the environmental risk of engineered nanomaterials with access to relevant mechanistic data across several spatial and temporal scales. Indoor aquatic mesocosms (60L) that can be tailored to virtually mimic any ecosystem appear as a particularly well-suited device. Here, this concept is illustrated by a pilot study aimed at assessing the distribution of a CeO2-based nanomaterial within our system at low concentration (1.5 mg/L). Physico-chemical as well as microbiological parameters took two weeks to equilibrate. These parameters were found to be reproducible across the 9-mesocosm setup over a 45-day period of time. Recovery mass balances of 115 +/- 18% and 60 +/- 30% of the Ce were obtained for the pulse dosing and the chronic dosing, respectively. This demonstrated the relevance of our experimental approach that allows for adequately monitoring the fate and impact of a given nanomaterial.

Abstract: International audience; A new fossil diatom with a well-developed raphe-bearing keel and continuous junction line in the strongly bilobate wings is described as Entomoneis calixasini Paillès, Blanc-Valleron & Poulin sp. nov. This species was found at numerous levels within a 4.6-m-long core recovered from the north-western slope of the Central High of the Marmara Sea, Turkey. Detailed light and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize this species. Entomoneis calixasini is unique by a wing resembling interconnecting dunces’ caps. This species, sometimes the most abundant, is present between 44 and 395 cm of MET09-GR02 core sediments, corresponding to the Pleistocene last glacial period (brackish lacustrine sediments). It was not observed in the marine sediments above, or in other core sediments from the Marmara Sea or elsewhere in Pleistocene or Holocene sequences. It is absent in modern collections and from the literature, and is considered extinct.

Abstract: International audience; As all arthropods, microcrustaceans shed their chitinous exoskeleton (cuticule, peritrophic membrane) to develop and grow. While the molting is the most crucial stage in their life cycle, it remains poorly investigated in term of pollutant biodistribution within the organisms. In this paper, we used optical, electronic, and X ray-based microscopies to study the uptake and release of CeO2 nanoparticles by/from Daphnia pulex over a molting stage. We measured that D. pulex molts every 59 +/- 21 h (confidence interval) with growth rates about 1.1 or 1.8 gm per stage as a function of the pieces measured. Ingestion via food chain was the main route of CeO2 nanoparticles uptake by D. pulex. The presence of algae during the exposure to nanoparticles (sub-lethal doses) enhanced by a factor of 3 the dry weight concentration of Ce on the whole D. pulex. Nanoparticles were localized in the gut content, in direct contact with the peritrophic membrane, and on the cuticle. Interestingly, the depuration (24 h with Chlorella pseudomonas) was not efficient to remove the nanoparticles from the organisms. From 40% to 100% (depending on the feeding regime during exposure) of the CeO2 taken up by D. pulex is not release after the depuration process. Abstract: To examine the climate of the mid-Holocene and early human settings in the Andes when the Altiplano was recording the most arid phase of the Holocene, we analyzed plant-related proxies (pollen, phytoliths, diatoms, stable isotopes) from a sediment core sampled at high elevation in the Eastern Cordillera of Bolivia. Our study was carried out in the wetland of Tiquimani (16°12′06.8″S; 68°3′51.5″W; 3760 m), on a well-known pathway between Amazonia and Altiplano. The 7000-year old record shows a two-step mid-Holocene with a dry climate between 6800 and 5800, followed by a wetter period that lasted until 3200 cal. yr BP. In the Central Andes of Bolivia, a widespread aridity was observed on the Altiplano during the mid-Holocene. However, here, we show that moisture was maintained locally by convective activity from the Amazon lowlands. During the arid interval between 5000 and 4000 yr BP, these niches of moisture produced specific grasslands that may have enabled the survival of an archaic culture of hunter–gatherers on the Puna. Abstract: L’analyse multiproxies à haute résolution d’une séquence sédimentaire prélevée dans le Lac Petit (alt. 2 200 m, vallon des Millefonts, Mercantour, France) a permis d’étudier les interactions climat-environnement-Homme à l’Holocène récent en contexte de haute montagne dans les Alpes du Sud. Grâce aux analyses lithostratigraphiques, géochimiques et palynologiques, trois grandes phases ont pu être reconstituées : (1) une période de stabilité relative de l’écosystème de 4 750 à 4 350 cal. BP, caractérisée par une sédimentation lacustre dominante et des sols développés sur les versants, (2) de 4 350 à 1 550 cal. BP, une augmentation des apports érosifs contemporaine d’une dégradation des sols superficiels et du couvert forestier, (3) une phase de déstabilisation intense et définitive des versants depuis 1 550 cal. BP. Le climat a certainement joué un rôle dans la dynamique du bassin-versant, mais l’Homme, dont l’impact reste discret jusqu’à 1 550 cal. BP, pourrait être un facteur majeur de perturbation des écosystèmes du vallon des Millefonts pendant le Subatlantique. Enfin, la récurrence d’apports terrigènes pourrait témoigner d’évènements orageux de forte intensité dont les conséquences érosives ont pu être amplifiées localement par l’augmentation de la pression agro-pastorale et des activités minières. High resolution multiproxy analyses, including sedimentological, geochemical and palynological investigations, were carried out on a 144-cm-long sediment profile from Lake Petit (2 200 m a.s.l., Vallon des Millefonts, Mercantour, in the French Southern Alps). This allowed us to reconstruct complex interactions between climate, environment and human during the Late Holocene. We identify three phases: (1) a first phase (4 750 to 4 350 cal. BP) characterized by a dominant lake sedimentation and developed soils on slopes, (2) a second period (4 350 to 1 550 cal. BP) marked by an abrupt switch in sediment source and an input of organic allochthonous matter linked with soil erosion and a more open landscape, (3) a final phase (since 1 550 cal. BP) of intense destabilization of slopes. Even if climate could have triggered such drastic changes, discreet but continuous human impact until 1 550 cal. BP might be the main factor of degradation of slopes and ecosystems in the valley. The record of abundant terrigenous input also suggests that high-intensity rainfall events might have occurred, while agro-pastoralism and local mining activities continuously weakened slopes.
