We report the design of a compact dual-polarization on-chip superconductor–insulator–superconductor receiver for array applications. The planar-circuit receiver chip is comprised of the entire radio frequency (RF) signal processing chain with three main circuit components alongside some auxiliary circuits: (1) a polarization splitting 4-probe orthomode transducer (OMT) that couples the RF and local oscillator signal from free space to the chip via a drilled feedhorn; (2) two hybrids that recombine the power of each polarization from the two sets of orthogonal OMT probes; and (3) twin-junction Nb/AlOx/Nb mixers that downconvert the recombined signals to the intermediate frequency. We ensure that the four side walls of each pixel are free from obscuration, using only the top and bottom of the pixel for various connections. Consequently, the design is extendable to a large format array. In this paper, we present the detailed design of the on-chip receiver, including extensive heterodyne simulations and its potential extension into a large format array.

International audience; We demonstrate the single photon counting mode at 405 and 850 nm with stoichiometric TiN-based microwave kinetic inductance detectors realized on a sapphire substrate and operated at bath temperatures over 300 mK. The detectors use single 15–25 nm-thick TiN layers featuring a critical temperature in the 2–3 K range. We found that the energy-resolving power R=E/ΔE exhibits an optimum with bath temperature, occurring in the 300–450 mK range, which can be almost double compared to those obtained at the lowest temperatures. Furthermore, the single photon regime is observed up to 700 mK. In addition to a high-temperature operation, the single stoichiometric layer would allow achieving a better uniformity in the critical temperature and, thus, kinetic inductance, compared to the often desired ∼1 K sub-stoichiometric TiN.

In this letter, we report the near quantum-limited performance of a 230 GHz endfire superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) mixer utilizing a Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb trilayer. An important feature of this mixer is its use of a unilateral finline for the waveguide-to-planar circuit transition, which allows for a wide radiofrequency (RF) bandwidth, a simple waveguide structure with easy alignment, and for the mixer chip to be aligned along the optical axis. Each of these factors is beneficial in the construction of large-format focal plane arrays. We tested the new finline mixer from 210 to 260 GHz in a liquid helium cryostat at ∼ 4 K. The best recorded noise temperature was approximately twice the quantum limit, which is comparable to conventional radial probe mixers. This suggests that endfire SIS mixers can be used in large format arrays, comprising 100s or even 1000s of SIS mixing elements, while retaining state-of-the-art quantum mixing performance.

Travelling wave parametric amplifiers (TWPAs) made from highly non-linear reactive superconducting thin films have been demonstrated to be a potentially viable quantum-noise-limited amplifier technology for various fundamental physics platforms, including microwave/mm/sub-mm astronomy, dark matter search experiments, neutrino mass experiments, and qubit readout. We present a kinetic inductance TWPA consisting of a patterned titanium nitride film on a sapphire substrate, which comprises a coplanar waveguide (CPW) with a continuous, smoothed periodic loading (PL) structure that modulates the characteristic impedance of the CPW in a double sinusoidal fashion. This double sinusoidal modulation creates much stronger dispersion features than a conventional PL design, which allows for phase matching and pump harmonic suppression over a much shorter transmission length, potentially leading to reduced losses. In this paper, we shall discuss in detail the design of our TWPA and present the predicted gain-bandwidth characteristics from electromagnetic simulations.

To improve the optical coupling in Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs), we investigate the use of a reflective plate beneath the meandered absorber. We designed, fabricated and characterized high-Q factors TiN-based MKIDs on sapphire operating at optical wavelengths with a Au/Nb reflective thin bilayer below the meander. The reflector is set at a quarter-wave distance from the meander using a transparent Al$_2$O$_3$ dielectric layer to reach the peak photon absorption. Travelling wave parametric amplifiers (TWPAs) made from highly nonlinear reactive superconducting thin films have been demonstrated to be a viable technology for various quantum applications, including fundamental physics experiments such as astronomy and axion dark matter searches, as well as commercial applications like quantum computational and communication systems. In this paper, we present the design of a kinetic inductance TWPA comprising a patterned titanium nitride film that can operate at 0.3K to demonstrate the feasibility of operation closer to 1K temperature, paving the way to achieve even higher bath temperature operation. We discuss in detail the design of our TWPA, along with the predicted gain-bandwidth product and other characteristics. We perform the preliminary experimental investigation of the thin film properties and compare that with the simulated results. We found that there are several discrepancies between the measured and the predicted behaviour of the thin film. We attribute these differences to the fact that the fabricated thin film has a different gap voltage, resistivity and thickness to what we expected. With a new set of estimated parameters, we successfully reproduce the measured transmission profile. We further show that by utilising bridges to ensure equipotential grounds for the CPW lines, we are able to reduce the rippling effect and achieve a higher gain with broader bandwidth. We expect that our TWPA can achieve higher than 20 dB gain from approximately 0–8 GHz.

International audience; This paper mainly discusses the fabrication and characterization of proximity-coupled Al/Au bilayer kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs). The proximity effect is used to optimize the critical temperature of the superconducting film and to increase the kinetic inductance fraction of the film. An Al/Au bilayer with thickness equal to 30 nm and 10 nm, respectively, is evaporated on a silicon substrate. The KIDs are cooled down to about 90 mK in an adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator. The measured average internal quality factor of the resonances is around 27,000. The critical temperature is 0.8 K, and the kinetic inductance is estimated to be about 2 ${\text{pH}}/\square$. The minimum detectable frequency of the chip is estimated to be about 60 GHz. The critical temperature can be further tuned by optimizing the thickness of the aluminum and gold films. The proximity-coupled Al/Au KIDs represent an appealing detector technology for photon detection at frequencies below 90 GHz.

Following optical pulses ($\lambda=405~\text{nm}$) on titanium nitride (TiN) Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs) cooled down at temperatures $T \le T_c / 20$ ($T_c \simeq 4.6~\text{K}$), we observe a large phase-response highlighting two different modes simultaneously that are nevertheless related. The first corresponds to the well-known transition of cooper-pair breaking into quasi-particles which produces a known phase response. This is immediately followed by a large inverse response lasting several hundreds of microseconds to several milliseconds depending on the temperature. We propose to model this inverse pulse as the thermal perturbation of the superconductor and interaction with two level system (TLS) that reduces the dielectric constant which in turns modify the capacitance and therefore the resonance frequency. We present a new software package, called QMix, for simulating the behavior of superconductor/insulator/ superconductor (SIS) mixers. The software uses a harmonic balance procedure to calculate the ac voltage across the SIS junction and multitone spectral domain analysis to calculate the quasiparticle tunneling currents. This approach has two major advantages over other simulation techniques: 1) it can include an arbitrary number of higher order harmonics, and 2) it can simulate the effect of multiple strong nonharmonic frequencies. This allows the QMix software to simulate a wide range of SIS mixer operation, including the effects of harmonics in the local-oscillator (LO) signal and gain saturation with respect to the RF signal power. In this article, we compare the simulated results from QMix to the measured performance of a 230-GHz SIS device, both to validate the software and to investigate the experimental data. To begin, we simulated the conversion gain of the mixer and we found excellent agreement with the experimental results. We were also able to recreate the broken photon step effect by adding higher and lower order harmonics to the LO signal. We then simulated a range of incident RF signal powers in order to calculate the gain saturation point. This is an important metric for SIS mixers because we require linear gain for reliable measurements and calibration. In the simulated results, we found both gain compression and gain expansion, which is consistent with other studies. Overall, these examples demonstrate that QMix is a powerful software package that will allow researchers to simulate the performance of SIS mixers, investigate experimental results, and optimize mixer operation. We have made all of the QMix software open-source and we invite others to contribute to the project.

We designed, fabricated and characterized parallel-plate capacitor lumped-element kinetic inductance detectors (LEKIDs) to operate at near-infrared and optical wavelengths (0.3 -1 μm). The widely used interdigitated capacitor is replaced by a parallel-plate capacitor which, for a given resonance frequency, has a larger capacitance value within a much smaller space allowing to strongly reduce the size of the pixels. The parallel-plate capacitor LEKID array comprises 10 × 10 pixels. The inductive meander is patterned from stoichiometric 52 nm-thick TiN film (Tc ≈4.6 K). International audience; We are developing superconducting Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors to operate at near infrared and optical wavelengths for astronomy. In order to efficiently meet with the requirements of astronomical applications, we propose to replace the interdigitated capacitor by a metal, insulator, metal capacitor which has the advantage of presenting a larger capacitance value within a much smaller space. The pixel will occupy a space of typically 100 micrometers by 85 micrometers which is nine times less than a typical pixel size using the interdigitated capacitor operating at the same frequency, below 2 GHz.

International audience; We present an antenna-coupled Kinetic Inductance Detector for millimeter wave astronomy. Next-generation telescopes for observing the cosmic microwave background are demanding in terms of number of detectors and focal plane area filling efficiency. Moreover, foreground reduction in B-Mode polarimetry requires sky observation with multiple frequency bands. In this context, KIDs are a promising technology because of their large multiplexing rate, while antenna coupling can provide multi-band and dual-polarization solutions in compact design. We have developed polarization-sensitive dual-band pixel at 140 and 160 GHz with a bandwidth of almost 8% for each sub-band. The design involves a microstrip-excited slot antenna and two open-stub band-pass filters to direct the signal toward two resonators. These are lumped elements capacitively coupled to the antenna and include an aluminum strip as absorber. The architecture proposed is particularly simple to fabricate, via-less and only involves two metallization levels. The transition does not require any dielectric deposition above the resonator, thus preventing limitations from any source of noise due to a non-monocrystalline substrate. Furthermore, the same coupling technique can be applied to many types of microstrip-excited antennas, which allow to accommodate band-pass filters.

Propranolol has become the first choice therapy for complicated Infantile Hemangiomas (IH). The pharmacokinetics of propranolol were evaluated after repeated oral administration of a new pediatric solution of propranolol at 3 mg kg−1 day−1 given twice daily (BID) in infants (77‐243 days) with IH. A population model was built to describe the pharmacokinetics of propranolol in infants and to simulate different dosing regimens. One hundred and sixty‐seven plasma concentrations from 22 infants were used in the population analysis. Weight effect was tested on apparent clearance and volume of distribution. Monte‐Carlo simulations were performed for 4 dosing regimens: BID dosing with irregular or strict 12‐hour intervals and 2 different 3 time daily dosing (TID) regimens. The best model was a one‐compartment model with first‐order absorption and elimination rates. The weight affected the clearance but not the volume. Typical oral clearance was estimated at 3.06 L hour−1 kg−1 (95% CI: 1.14‐8.61 L hour−1 kg−1), close to adult clearance data. We report laboratory development of coronagraphic devices to be implemented on the High Order Testbench (HOT) to assess intensity reduction between them at a high Strehl ratio regime. The high order test bench implements extreme adaptive optics with realistic telescope conditions reproduced by star and turbulence generators. A 32×32 actuator micro deformable mirror, one pyramid wave front sensor, one Shack-Hartmann wave front sensor and the ESO SPARTA realtime computer. This will enable characterization and comparative study of different types of coronagraphs in realistic conditions. International audience; We report on the implementation of a vacuum parallel-plate capacitor manufactured using a straightforward process that allows to accurately set nanoscale vacuum gaps in order to reach fairly large capacitances with small footprints. Vacuum gaps between 150 and 300 nm have been achieved. To prevent native oxides and therefore two-level systems, both electrodes are made of TiN-based layers. We implemented the vacuum parallel-plate capacitors into lumped-element kinetic inductance detectors and compared their performances to standard interdigitated capacitorbased detectors. The vacuum capacitor detectors achieved higher quality factors (up to 1.1 × 10 6) and lower frequency noise (2.8 ± 0.5 Hz 2 /Hz at 10 Hz). Furthermore, we demonstrate that the noise generated within the meander of the lumpedelement kinetic inductance detector can be as important as the one generated in the capacitance.
