Aggregation-induced emitters or AIEgens are generally signified by their stronger photoluminescence in aggregation than in the solution state. Due to high emission efficiency in aggregate and solid states and good processability, organic AIEgens drew attention to the development of advanced luminescent materials. However, as mesogenic materials self-assemble to a different molecular arrangement in different phases, achieving liquid crystallinity and AIE properties in the same molecule would provide a valuable tool to develop solvent-independent AIEgenic materials. With this goal, the present work reports the synthesis of new organic thermotropic liquid crystalline compounds exhibiting aggregation-induced emission (AIE). The synthesized compounds exhibit strong green luminescence in a solid state which sharply quenches upon entering smectic mesophase by heating. This is in addition to the exhibition of dispersion medium (solvent)-dependent emission, thus providing a dual mode of AIE. The mesogenic property of the synthesized compounds was studied by XRD, POM, and DSC. The AIE was studied by fluorescence spectroscopy and variable temperature fluorescence microscopy. Nanobiotechnology‐mediated synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles, micro/nanocurcumin, and curcumin–ZnO nanocomposites and their characterization followed by comparative study of their antibacterial, antioxidant, and iron‐chelating efficiency at various dosages are discussed. Micro/nanocurcumin and ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized using curcumin and zinc nitrate as precursor and then conjugated by sonication to synthesize curcumin–ZnO nanocomposites. The synthesized nanoparticles were then characterized by using ultraviolet‐visible spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy, and dynamic light scattering analysis. After that, the antibacterial activity of the synthesized nanoparticles was evaluated by the optical density (OD600) method against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus cells. The DPPH (2,2‐diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl), hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, and ferrous ion–chelating efficiency of synthesized nanoparticles were evaluated by spectrophotometry analysis. Nanocurcumin (mean zeta potential = −25 mV; average hydrodynamic diameter = 410 nm) based coating of ZnO nanoparticles (mean zeta potential = −15.9 mV; average hydrodynamic diameter = 274 nm) to synthesize curcumin–ZnO nanocomposites (mean zeta potential = −18.8 mV; average hydrodynamic diameter = 224 nm) exhibited enhanced zeta potential, which resulted in reduced agglomeration, smaller hydrodynamic size in water, improved aqueous solubility, and dispersion. All the aforesaid factors including the synergistic antibacterial effect of ZnO nanoparticle and micro/nanocurcumin contributed to increased antibacterial efficiency of curcumin–ZnO nanocomposites. Micro/nanocurcumin due to its better water solubility and small hydrodynamic diameter exhibited enhanced antioxidant and ferrous ion–chelating efficiency than curcumin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Curcumin, an important natural compound derived from Curcuma longa, is a diphenolic compound. The compound has high medicinal value and shows prospective applications in cancer therapy. It has been found that nano-formulation of curcumin significantly increases its anticancer activity by increasing its solubility, bioavailability, efficient and target specific delivery system. This paper begins by arguing that Bankimchandra, a pioneering novelist and nationalist thinker of India, sought to contain the nineteenth century 'woman question' within his nationalist project of 'cultural transformation'. But this nationalist ideal is based on a gendered differentiation of the nation-culture into spiritual and material which has a far reaching implication in terms of his novelistic re-presentation of the nineteenth century 'woman question' and the 'hierarchical inclusion' of women in the political space of the nation. Hence, by contextualizing the works of Bankimchandra in a time of colonial encounter the present paper aims to bring out the complexities and paradoxes inherent in Bankimchandra's formation of the strategy of re-presentation of women and reform in several of his novels. Liquid crystal-gold nanoparticle (GNP-LC) composite were accessed via covalent coupling of 4-mercaptophenol capped gold nanoparticles (GNP) and a carboxylic acid functionalised rod shaped mesomorphic Schiff base (LC). The Schiff base ligand and the composite both showed schlieren texture with distinct difference in phase transition temperature. The X-ray diffraction study suggested a smectic C mesophase for the compounds. The LC and GNP-LC, both exhibited room temperature photoluminescence when excited at 264nm.The transmission electron micrography revealed the composite to be nearly monodisphersed having almost spherical shape of ~ 2nm size. The composite material in addition to being mesomorphic exhibited pronounced AC conductivity in the semiconductor domain and antioxidant activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An efficient and convenient method for the synthesis of coumarin- and quinolone-annulated 2-aminothiazoles is reported. The fused ring 2-aminothiazoles were synthesized from substituted coumarin/ quinoline and phenylisothiocyanates in the presence of CuI, DABCO, and 1,10-phenanthroline. The article presents a pilot study regarding the problem of drug addiction involving youth in Calcutta, India. The study aims to explore and examine factors that motivate the youth of Calcutta to become drug addicts and injecting drug users. Respondents of the study included 200 selected male youth with an average age of 29 from six different drug detoxification clinics. It was found that no single factor was responsible for driving a person towards drug addiction. Moreover, it was determined that many youth explore ways to vent their frustration since they are being disgusted with the condition of their current life and finding no hope for improving the quality of life.

We evaluated antidiabetic efficacy of Cassia fistula stem bark extract (RG1) in 3T3-L1 cell line and streptozotocin (STZ) induced Swiss albino mice model. MTT and acute oral toxicity assays used to determined toxicity. Effect of RG1 in 3T3-L1 cell adipogenesis, glucose uptake, and pleiotropic transcriptional activators were determined in vitro antidiabetic efficacy, which was further established in vivo by using STZ induced diabetic mice model, serum biochemical analyses and the activity of RG1 in pancreatic cells. RG1 showed significant effect in 3T3-L1 adipogenesis, lipid accumulation, glucose uptake by differentiated adipocytes, and pleiotropic transcriptional activators- C/EBPa, PPARy, ap2, LPL and Adiopo-Q. RG1 affected STZ induced diabetes mice's body weight, plasma glucose level, serum lipid profile and hepatic enzyme levels as antidiabetic agent. It rejuvenated the pancreatic cell damage caused due to diabetes and restored the insulin secretory granule regeneration.
