Abstract

The application of mathematics and statistical methods to scholarly communication: scientometrics, has facilitated the systematic analysis of the modern digital tide of literature. This chapter reviews three of such applications: coauthorship, bibliographic coupling, and coword networks. It also presents an exploratory case of study for the knowledge circulation literature. It was found a diverse geographical production, mainly in the Global North and Asian institutions with significant intermediation of universities from USA, Colombia, and Japan. The research fronts identified were related to science and medicine's history and philosophy; education, health, policy studies; and a set of interdisciplinary topics. Finally, the knowledge pillars were comprised of urban planning policy, economic geography, and historical and theoretical perspectives in the Netherlands and Central Europe; globalization and science, technology, and innovation and historical and institutional frameworks in the UK; and cultural and learning studies in the XXI century.

Abstract

Responsible indicators are crucial for research assessment and monitoring. Transparency and accuracy of indicators are required to make research assessment fair and ensure reproducibility. However, sometimes it is difficult to conduct or replicate studies based on indicators due to the lack of transparency in conceptualization and operationalization. In this paper, we review the different variants of the Probabilistic Affinity Index (PAI), considering both the conceptual and empirical underpinnings. We begin with a review of the historical development of the indicator and the different alternatives proposed. To demonstrate the utility of the indicator, we demonstrate the application of PAI to identifying preferred partners in scientific collaboration. A streamlined procedure is provided, to demonstrate the variations and appropriate calculations. We then compare the results of implementation for five specific countries involved in international scientific collaboration. Despite the different proposals on its calculation, we do not observe large differences between the PAI variants, particularly with respect to country size. As with any indicator, the selection of a particular variant is dependent on the research question. Abstract

Proper field delineation plays an important role in scientometric studies, although it is a tough task. Based on an emerging and interdisciplinary field, nanoscience and nanotechnology, this paper highlights the problem of field delineation. First, we review the related literature. Then, three different approaches to delineate a field of knowledge were applied at three different levels of aggregation: subject category, publication level, and journal level. Expert opinion interviews served to assess the data, and precision and recall of each approach were calculated for comparison. Our findings confirm that field delineation is a complicated issue at both the quantitative and the qualitative level, even when experts validate results.

Abstract

This study investigates gender disparities in the Spanish workforce's distribution in international and industry collaborative publications, highlighting common issues and potential differences. The work provides detailed information not only by gender but also by research field, research career, author position, and number of co-authors. The findings show a lower presence of women in both types of collaboration, even in 'Biomedical & Health Sciences', although there are more women in the total number of publications of this field. Women are under-represented in relevant authorship positions (first, last or corresponding author), possibly due to their concentration in the early career stages. A greater number of co-authors is associated with a decreased likelihood of holding relevant authorship positions, with some exceptions for women in international collaboration. This article aims to encourage responsible metrics by suggesting changes in evaluation policies to avoid indirect biases affecting gender and career progression.

Abstract

In the evolving landscape of scientific research, ORCID identifiers are essential for maintaining academic integrity and enhancing research visibility. This study proposes a methodological framework for identifying and analyzing the presence and characteristics of researchers in a specific country in ORCID, using complementary data from OpenAlex to improve results. Our objectives were to develop a reliable method to identify ORCID records of researchers in Spain, study the frequency of profile updates, and investigate the most frequently filled metadata sections and common profile characteristics across disciplines. We identified 190,455 ORCID records of Spanish researchers and found high engagement with some metadata, particularly in the 'Employment' (73%) and 'Publications' (83%) sections. Additionally, 73% of records were actively maintained. The most common metadata combination included 'Works', 'Employment', and 'Education and Qualifications'. However, we noted significant variability and incomplete records across disciplines. The study highlights the need for more complete and frequently updated profiles, improved institutional integration, and strategic efforts to enhance ORCID adoption. These improvements could enhance the reliability of ORCID for tracking researcher mobility and academic trajectories.

14. Towards a new approach to analyzing the geographical scope of national research. An exploratory analysis at the country level

Abstract

This study aims to identify and compare the national scope of research at the country level, dealing with two groups of countries: Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) and a group of countries at the forefront in developing mainstream science (WORLD). We wish to explore whether similar or different patterns arise between the two groups at the global and disciplinary level, becoming apparent in their proportion of research related to local perspectives or topics. It is found that Latin America and the Caribbean countries present a greater proportion of local production. The trend to publish national-oriented research is related to disciplinary fields. Even though English is the dominant language of publication, the lingua franca is more likely to appear in the national scope of research, especially for Latin America and the Caribbean countries but also in the rest of non-Anglophone countries. Some implications and limitations for further studies are described.

18. La investigación argentina sobre agroindustria y su colaboración internacional (2007-2016)

Abstract

This work aims to compare the collaboration patterns of the Argentine scientific production of Agroindustry according to thegeographical scope of the research, that is, topics addressed to national readers and topics that go beyond the national border.Scopus database were used to carry out this study which span for the period 2007-2016. Collaboration patterns of both groupswere analyzed and described as follows: a) whether they are global or local research topics, applying the criterion of absence orpresence of national place names, respectively; b) the volume of co-authorship with different countries grouped by continents ispresented; c) the 20 most frequent keywords are determined for each case and, d) the H-Index of countries was used as an indicatorof the scientific impact of the collaborating country. The main results show that European countries are the main collaborator inAgroindustry research with more than 40% of co-authored papers, while Oceania, Asia, and Africa present lower collaborationrates (5% or less). The distribution of papers in global and local topics appear in all continents with slight increases in Europe, North America, and the Caribbean and Oceania in favor of local topics. The correlation between international collaboration andthe scientific impact of the countrie with which Argentina collaborates is relatively positive. The topics investigated are mainlyanchored in Patagonia, the maritime coastline, and are especially focused on cattle and corn. The study provides useful information to think about the formation of research teams, the planning of international mobility programs, and strategic alliances for future collaboration, and it does so in a strategic area that generates strong expectations for the economic development of the country.

Abstract

This study aims to provide an overview of the distribution of the Spanish scientific workforce focusing on differences in authorship position by gender, academic age, number of authors, and research field. The results show some degree of parity in younger age cohorts and areas such as biomedicine, but little participation of females in the oldest age cohort and areas such as mathematics. In addition, the presence of women undergoes significant changes in certain areas and decreases in oldest age cohorts. This circumstance leads to a very low probability of finding women or junior researchers in relevant authorship positions. Policymakers should be aware that there are inequalities in the scientific workforce that need to be considered when addressing/proposing scientific evaluation criteria.

Abstract

•Objective: To render and analyze the evolution and dynamics of the main research lines in the Spanish scientific output on stem cells between 1997 and 2010. •Material and Methods: We retrieved the documents from the Science Citation Index (SCI). The units of analysis were the descriptors KeyWords Plus (KW +). The tools used for visualization have been software Pajek combined with Pathfinder Network (PFnet), and VOSviewer software. This study analyzes the period includes between 1997-2007, and the evolution of the research into three sub-periods: 1997-2001, 2002-2006 and 2007-2010. •Results and Discussion: The results of the full period locate up to six main research lines. In the first period, there is a strong presence of the descriptors that represent documents related to hematology and oncology. However, the other research lines do not begin to be clearly detected until the second period. Here,we can locate clusters of descriptors related to hematopoietic stem cell research, others related with the generation, proliferation and differentiation of stem cells and finally, alternate associated to an emerging cluster of neural progenitor cells. The results show that the weight of these latter groups make them more evident in the last period. •Conclusion: The visualization of the relationships between the KW + has yielded two complementary images of the situation and evolution of Spanish research on stem cells. The methodology has identified areas of research both consolidated and emerging, intuiting the development of a thematic domain over time. The visualization software complement each other quite well, matching in the identification of the main research lines and in the location of the most influential descriptors.

Abstract

This report presents the findings of a collaborative study conducted by the Cuban Ministry of Higher Education, the National Center for Scientific Research and INASP. It consists of a bibliometric analysis of the scientific production of five Latin American countries (Cuba, Ecuador, Bolivia, Nicaragua and Honduras) during the period 1996–2008. The report examines changes in the scientific research output of these countries, and compares them to patterns in a control group of eight countries whose development is at a comparable level to that of the studied countries. This allows findings to be considered in the context not only of regional but also international trends, particularly, so that strengths and weakness can be identified to support future decision-making processes.

Abstract

In open access, there are several studies showing what has been the extent and magnitude of this phenomenon but few show the effects in terms of impact and visibility of journals taking into account both the thematic distribution as the distribution by geographical region. This study aims to show the extent and presence from the perspective of the journals contained in the Scopus database from Elsevier and its effects on visibility, particularly focusing on Latin America. Preliminary results show that at international level in all disciplines present thematic magazines Parkway greatly exceed the percentage of journals golden route. However, in peripheral regions and in the emerging field of science and technology, the golden route is the most prevalent and also these magazines usually appear in the last positions of the distributions of impact. With these data in context, this study aims to characterize and describe which one is the presence of open access in Latin America to thematic level and what are its effects on visibility

Abstract

The aim of this study is to characterize the development, visibility and impact of Latin American scientific production in the area of public health and patterns of international collaboration. Bibliometric study was conducted in the Scopus database, with data available on the site SCImago Journal & Country Rank and SCImago Institutions Rankings during the period between 1996 and 2008. Specifically, we took the data of the category "Public Health, Environmental and Occupational Health" (Public Health, Environmental and Occupational Health) of the area of medicine. Indicators were analyzed in the dimensions quantitative, qualitative, and Latin American collaboration in the domain and the 10 most producers in the region. As most remarkable results we can say that Latin America produces 6.21% of total scientific output in public health. Publication in the region has experienced an increase of more than 50% in the last 4 years. Brazil is the largest producer in the region, followed by Mexico and Cuba. The prevailing type of document is the original article and English is the language most commonly used. The most productive Latin American countries have less visibility. The impact is below the world average in most countries. The collaboration has declined over the last 2 or 3 years. In conclusion we can say that Latin American scientific production has gained in volume and pattern of similar impact to the world. It is necessary to implement policies that respond to good publishing practices and collaboration to enhance the international prestige.

Abstract

Purpose: The objective of this study was to test gender difference model in the Cuban scientific publications on Medicine. Methodology: In this study, the gender difference model was tested using bibliometrics. The analysis was limited to documents registered in Web of Science during the period of 2000 to 2007. Gender differences in scientific productivity were examined in a sample of 1910 records. Name desambiguation was carried out and author’s names were classified into males and females. 95% of all records under Medicine related categories were normalized. Production, authorship, collaboration and visibility indicators were measure. Findings: The publications patterns of Cuban authors during 2000-2007 were not affected by gender. This study confirms the presence of significant differences in productivity between men and women when they don’t practice intergender collaboration. Negative effects on visibility and productivity are stronger for female than male when they publish in groups where colleagues have the same sex.

Abstract

The current communication presents a simple exercise with the aim of solving a singular problem: the retrieval of extremely large amounts of items in the Web of Science interface. As it is known, Web of Science interface allows a user to obtain at most 100,000 items from a single query. But what about queries that achieve a result of more than 100,000 items? The exercise developed one possible way to achieve this objective. The case study is the retrieval of the entire scientific production from the United States in a specific year. Different sections of items were retrieved using the field Source of the database. Then, a simple Boolean statement was created with the aim of eliminating overlapping and to improve the accuracy of the search strategy. The importance of team work in the development of advanced search strategies was noted.

Abstract

Quantitative science studies have been used to facilitate the systematic analysis of the modern digital tide of literature over the last few decades. This chapter reviews two applications related to science mapping of scholarly communication. Science mapping includes visualizations to analyze potential relationships between people, organizations, concepts. Here, we review two methods: a) co-authorship: to unveil the scientific connections of actors in the field; b) and coword analysis: to reveal the main themes and topics and their cognitive structure. This study also presents an exploratory case of study for the knowledge circulation literature. Based on a sample of 3,900+ documents published between 1996 and 2021, we found a global average annual growth of the literature of ~17%, particularly since 2009. We then segmented the science mapping analysis into two periods: 1996-2008 and 2009-2021, to track changes over time. Coauthorship analysis showed a growing institutional collaboration between periods, first led by USA-Asia pacific institutions, then led by the United Kingdom and Canada. On the other hand, the co-word analysis showed consistency between periods of the conceptual communities concerning Knowledge management via Information Technology (IT) and Miscellaneous in the history of medicine and research/methodologies. Relevant conceptual communities in the first period were displaced by communities such as E-learning and education economics; Research methods in public policy; and Sustainability sciences and environmental policy. Beginners, seasoned scholars, and other actors could use our findings to identify key institutions and topics in the knowledge circulation research landscape.

Abstract

In this new release, the Indicadores Bibliométricos report is becoming "the" information tool for the continuous analysis of the scientific activity in Spain. It allows to make diagnoses based on its evolution over time, and to take decisions based on actual knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of scientific of the Spanish national science, technology and innovation system. From the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (Fecyt) we are confident that the work done in preparing this new document will contribute to improve the knowledge of the National Science and Technology System and shed light on relevant aspects of the production of our researchers in terms of publications and generation of specialized knowledge. Thus, the ICON Observatory successfully contribute to an improved decision-making processes in the field of scientific research, development and technological innovation, policy areas that are imposed with increasing force as the new engines that have to boost our country's productive system.

Frontiers in Research Metrics and Analytics (FRMA) is an open-access journal that was launched in 2016. Its mission is to provide a platform for scholars to learn, evaluate, and improve research and scholarship in various disciplines. The journal aims to advance meta-knowledge of research and innovation and promote new ways of conducting high-quality research. FRMA consists of six sections that cover topics such as assessment, evaluation, scholarly communication, and strategic management of research and innovation. The journal has published 369 articles so far and has been cited by other journals in related fields. Abstract

This paper presents a tool that can be used to characterize, analyze and interpret the patterns of collaboration among institutions by means of the visual display of scientific information. These graphic representations allow for a combined analysis of a given institution in the system of relations (network), and of the particular attributes of that institution (indicators). The tool affords the possibility of regenerating the network to make any number of aggregates appear or disappear, thus allowing one to focus on institutional sectors, geographic regions, etc. It also allows for analysis of sectorial interaction, institutional backing of research, and the influence of geographic proximity, linguistic affinity, or regional politics. This is indeed a versatile analytical tool, and it is bound to prove its potential for evaluating patterns of collaborative research, development and innovation.

Abstract

We analyze the scientific production of excellence through bibliometric indicators of scientific activity that allows to know Spanish, among others, regional capacities in research. Abstract

Subject category cocitation (SCC) and its representation through social networks has been shown to be a well-suited technique for the visualization and analysis of large scientific domains. The combination of SCC and PathfinderNetworks (PFNET) with prune values r = ∞ and q = n - 1 highlights the salient structure of the analyzed domain. This paper examines both the possible loss of structural information in the peripheral zones as a consequence of PFNET aggressivity due to the radical pruning conditions established and how it is solved and enhanced through heliocentric or second-level maps. Despite the above, large scientific domain maps are a highly valuable tool due to its capability to show the development of a scientific domains over time, reveal differences and similarities among domains, as well as suggest potential trends in them.

Abstract

Category cocitation and its representation through social networks is proving to be a very adequate technique for the visualization and analysis of great scientific domains. Its combination with PathfinderNetworks using pruning values r = ∞and q = n – 1 makes manifest the essence of research in the domain represented, or what we might call the “most salient structure”. The possible loss of structural information, caused by agressive pruning in perpheral areas of the networks, is neatly overcome by creating heliocentric maps for each category. The depictions obtained with this procedure become tools of great utility in view of their capacity to reveal the evolution of a given scientific domain over time, to show differences and similarities between different domains, and to suggest possible new lines of development.

Abstract

Science and Technology Policies are gaining a more prominent role in the governments plans of the most developed countries. In tha Andalusian region the new government elected on March 14, 2004, committed to promote R&D + innovation policies and significantly increase the budgets allocated to them. To meet this challenge the Department of Innovation, Science and Enterprise (Consejería de Innovación, Ciencia y Empresa) was created. Given these increases in activity and budgets, they are also becoming increasingly important the assessment processes of plans and programs, and the scientific activity in general. The work presented here is intended to give continuity to a series of bibliometric works started some years ago on behalf of the Plan Andaluz de Investigación, Desarrollo e Innovación (PAIDI) --Andalusian Research Plan- itself, and reflects the scientific production of Andalusia according to the databases of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI Web of Science), providing important new features to previous editions: standardization of the scientific institutions generating Andalusian scientific outputs, extension of the study to the CSIC centres and to hospitals, and inclusion of tables and graphs that charts the evolution of the main indicators in recent years. The information contained in this publication, along with other works and similar initiatives, as will be the consolidation and expansion of the Scientific Information System of Andalusia (SICA) will be a source of valuable information for the assessment processes that the newly created Andalusian Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation will face. Also will be useful for decision making processes after the implementation of various programs under the new PAIDI to be adopted in 2005.

Abstract

To contribute to the analysis of the situation, evolution and effects of the R+D activity in the autonomous community of Galicia (northern Spain) for the different areas of knowledge is one of the objectives branching from the Consortium of University Libraries of Galicia. To this end, among other necessary actions, we must retrieve data available on scientific output by Galician research personnel, and from there, through the elaboration of indicators, to establish the conditions existing among efforts, disciplines, organisations, territory, etc. For this reason, the Consortium of University Libraries of Galicia took the initiative of promoting an analysis of the state of the art of research in Galicia through the study of scientific indicators, in order to determine the present situation as well as its evolution since the year 1990. The main objective is to measure the situation of Galicia insofar as the generation of new knowledge and its relationship with investment efforts by analysing socioeconomic indicators that describe the situation of the resources invested in R+D; indicators of output that describe quantitative aspects of research activity; indicators of impact, showing the visibility of work within the scientific community; and indicators of collaboration with other Spanish autonomous communities and in the international realm.
