The liquid impingers can be used for sampling of viral aerosols, such as COVID-19 virus, influenza, and measles. However, the lowest cutoff diameter of commercially available liquid impingers was about 0.3 μm, and the physical collection efficiency for nano-bioaerosol is only about 10–20%. Here, we enhanced the impinger’s collection efficiency and recovery of viable viral aerosols by using packed glass beads and selected sampling media (1% peptone and lysogeny broth, LB). Single-stranded RNA (ssRNA) MS2 bacteriophage with uranine (as a physical tracer) was used as model viral aerosols. The effects of different sampling flow rates (4, 6, and 12.5 L per minute) and different sampling time (10, 20, and 30 min) on the collection efficiency and recovery of MS2 aerosols were also tested. Collection efficiency and recovery of viable viral aerosols were analyzed as a function of sampling media, flow rate, and sampling time and packed glass beads by using a general linear model. Although the packed glass beads considerably enhanced the collection efficiency of the liquid impinger for MS2 aerosols, the recovery of viable MS2 becomes lower due to the higher pressure drop across the impinger. Using peptone or LB as sampling media, reducing sampling flow rate, and decreasing sampling time was proven to improve the recovery of viable MS2. Conclusively, this study provides some practical methods to improve the collection efficiency of liquid impinger for viral aerosols and preserve their viability.

We studied using rapid melt growth (RMG) method to make GaSb microdisks on Si substrate. By optimizing the process condition, we observe a strong photoluminescence.

The efficient monolithic III-V integration on silicon (Si) substrates can leverage the excellent optoelectronic properties of III-V semiconductors and the Si microfabrication technology for electronic, optoelectronics, integrated photonics devices. However, the origin of the interfacial and material defects during III-V monolithic integration on Si poses the challenge to achieve efficient optical emitters, detectors. In this study, we investigated different surface treatment schemes before rapid melt growth (RMG) of GaSb on Si substrate to attain defect control. The deposition of an Sb layer (10 nm) on GaSb precursors surfaces resulted in achieving better structural and optical properties of GaSb post RMG. We achieved a reduction of 2.48 atomic % of unintentional incorporation of Si into the GaSb via Sb treatment compared to that of untreated GaSb analysed using transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Improved surface morphology with reduced root mean square roughness of 3.7 nm is obtained with Sb layer treatment compared to 5.6 nm for untreated GaSb precursor measured by atomic force microscopy. We obtained improved optical properties and low defect density with an in-situ Sb treatment scheme on GaSb precursor surface by µ-Photoluminescence and µ-Raman spectroscopy analysis.

Liquid impingers are utilized to collect bioaerosols for many advantages, such as avoiding dehydration of biological agents. A new X-ray diffraction technique is developed to probe structural variations at the interfaces between epitaxy thin films and single-crystal substrates. The technique utilizes three-wave Bragg-surface diffraction, where a symmetric Bragg reflection and an asymmetric surface reflection are involved. The propagation of the latter along the interfaces conveys structural information about the interfacial region between the substrate and epi-layers. The sample systems of Au/GaAs(001) are subject to the three-wave diffraction investigation using synchrotron radiation. The GaAs three-wave Bragg-surface diffractions, (006)/(11¯3) and (006)/(1¯1¯3), are employed. The images of the surface diffracted waves are recorded with an image plate. The obtained images show relative positions of diffraction spots near the image of the interfacial boundary, which give the variation of lattice constant along the surface normal and in-plane directions. With the aid of grazing-incidence diffraction, three-dimensional mapping of strain field at the interfaces is possible. Details about this diffraction technique and the analysis procedures are discussed.

In this paper, a new type of human urine glucose measurement system is proposed. We measured the phase variation of human urine with/without glucose-urine mixture (to simulate diabetes mellitus). We were able to achieve high resolution with the proposed method. The relation curve between the phase difference and glucose concentration can be estimated, and the glucose concentration of a urine sample can be determined by using this relation curve. The proposed method showed that theoretical resolution is approximated of 1.47 mg/dl.

An original alternative approach to isoquinolines based on the installation of a benzene nucleus on a performed heterocyclic ring. Synthesis of 3,4-dihydrobenzo[g]isoquinoline-1(2H)-ones and 3,4-dihydroisoquinoline-1(2H)-ones via intramolecular electrophilic cyclization of 3,4-disubstituted lactams is reported.

The thermal optical properties of a holographic material were measured using total internal reflection heterodyne interferometry. The effective thermal expansion coefficients (ETECs) of the holographic material were determined at various exposure times. Our results showed that the holographic material exhibited a smaller thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) with a longer exposure time than those materials with short exposure times. Thus the diffraction power increased as the exposure time of the holographic material increased. Furthermore, the proposed method provides a highly accurate means of measurement for determination of the TEC. The theoretical ETEC error of the proposed method is better than 1.1×10 −7 and the practical ETEC error under the precision measurement conditions can reach to 2.3×10− 6 .

A convenient method for the preparation of 5-methoxy-6-substituted-3-sulfonyl-delta-enlactams via regioselective nucleophilic addition to 5-methoxy-3-sulfonyl glutarimide is described. Formal syntheses of L-733,060, CP-99,994, and cassine are also reported.

The advantage of a nonlinear bidirectional selector is its high access ratio with multiple transport mechanisms in a wide bias range. The multilayer structure of TiN/Al2O3/TiO2/Al2O3/TiN with a nonlinear varistor characteristic is proposed. The features of the structure include its low-temperature process (∼250 °C) for stackable applications, non-requirement of rare materials such as Pt, and its high access ratio (∼3200). The varistor characteristic of the nonlinear selector is discussed and attributed to carrier tunneling and thermionic emission for small biases (OFF state) and large biases (ON state), respectively. The selector shows scaling feasibility owing to its property of inertness to SiO2 encapsulation and is compatible with the current IC and memory industry.
